It has been established in Uttaramimamsa (Vedanta) that the gods are in the form of images and that there are two kinds of gods viz. Karmadevas and Ajanadevas. Those who attained godliness by means of karma are called Karmadevas. The Ajanadevas being constantly engaged in reciting mantras precede Karmadevas. And, therefore, realized the meanings of the sacrificial mantras ahead of Karmadevas. Although Karmadevas are hostile to Ajanadevas it is not a mistake to propitiate the Ajanadevas in sacrifices. In fact, karmadevas bring obstacles. Yet they give the right to perform sacrifices.
Incarnation of Visnu as Vamana 1.29.7-12
Goddess Aditi and goddess Saraswati propitiated lord Visnu in order to get him as a son just as Kasyapa penanced for one thousand divine years for the same purpose. If the lord is different from His penance will not the Advaita or non-duality be contradicted? There is no contradiction of non-duality because the lord himself is called the manifestation of penance (tapomurthi). ‘Tapas’ is derived from the root, ‘tap’ which means, ‘to reflect upon’. ‘Tapatmaka’, therefore, means those who have not performed penance cannot visualize Him who is the embodiment of knowledge.
