Trisanku felt abashed to tell Vasishta’s sons that their father had rejected his request. Trisanku gave up his natural quality of a kshatriya. The stanza is spurious according to Kataka.
Fate 1.58.22
Vasishta’s sons cursed Trisanku. He was transformed into a chandala. If that is so, it is destiny in which the fruits of actions lie. The unseen power alone is supremely great. Man’s efforts are futile in acquiring things, good or bad. Destiny alone is the ultimate refuge. But the question is, how can Trisanku perform the sacrifice in the person of a chandala, a status which cannot be removed because of the curse? The commentator says, engaging himself in the sacrifice as a kshatriya and trying to initiate a chandala into the sacrifice, trying also to kill brahmanas such as Vasishta-all this is the play of fate for the destruction of Viswamitra who is conducting penance to become a brahmana.
