Rsyasringa’s story 1.9.2-19; 1.10.30

The commentator believes that the story of Rsyasringa is make-believe like the ghost story told to divert children. That rain is a natural phenomenon and people have no control over it was not known at that time. Second, although Rsyasringa lived in deep forest how is it that he did not see any woman? Third, if he was so knowledgeable, how did he act like a demented person? Fourth, if he was so scared of his father why did he welcome the courtesans? There are other questions. Why did he go away with them without his father’s permission? Why did his father not find out that it was the king’s doing and curse him? The commentator is of the opinion that since Rsyasringa married a kshatriya woman the whole story has been cooked up. The poet has narrated this tale so that others do not emulate it.
