The cunning Manthara was trying to impress Kaikeyi that the installation of Rama on the throne would surely spell disaster on both Bharata and Kaikeyi. By seniority, Rama would be king and after Rama, his eldest son, and not Bharata. Secondly, there was every chance that Kausalya would take revenge for the insults and ignominy suffered under Kaikeyi’s arrogance. Thirdly, Bharata and herself would be reduced to the level of servants and lose all royal comforts. By all this, Kaikeyi’s mind changed and yielded to the wily persuasion of Manthara. Of course, there was the celestial decree also as gods laboured this change in Kaikeyi, as they wanted the destruction of Ravana.
