[Sumantra narrates the manner in which Rsyasringa was brought to Anga--Romapada sends courtesans to lure Rsyasringa and to get him to famine-stricken Anga--rains follow ending famine- Rsyasringa marries Santa, daughter of Romapada.]

sumantraścōditō rājñā prōvācēdaṅ vacastadā.

yatharśyaśṛṅgastvānīta śśruṇu mē mantribhissaha৷৷1.10.1৷৷


rājñā by the king, cōdita: prompted, sumantra: Sumantra, tadā then, idam these words, prōvāca said, sa:ṛśyaśṛṅga: that Rsyasringa, mantribhi:saha with ministers, yathā in what manner, ānīta: was brought, mē to me, śṛṇu listen.

Thus prompted by king Dasaratha, Sumantra said, "I shall relate to you the manner in which Rsyasringa was brought to the court. Listen to me along with your ministers".
rōmapādamuvācēdaṅ sahāmātya: purōhita:.

upāyō nirapāyō.yamasmābhirabhicintita:৷৷ 1.10.2৷৷


sahāmātya: along with ministers, purōhita: the priest, rōmapādam to Romapada, idam these words, uvāca addressed, asmābhi: by us, nirapāya: without danger, ayam this, upāya: plan, abhicintita: is thought over.

The priest accompanied by ministers said to Romapada, "We have thought over a plan which will never fail."
ṛśyaśṛṅgō vanacarastapassvādhyayanē rata:.

anabhijñassa nārīṇāṅ viṣayāṇāṅ sukhasya ca.1.10.3৷৷


ṛśyaśṛṅga: Risyasringa, vanacara: residing in forests, tapa: svādhyayanē rata: delighted in the study of vedas, sa: he, nārīṇām of women, viṣayāṇām of pleasures, sukhasya ca of worldly enjoyments, anabhijña: not acquainted with.

"Rsyasringa, residing in the forest, is engrossed in the study of the Vedas. He is not acquainted with women and sensual pleasures.
indriyārthairabhimatairnaracittapramāthibhi: .

puramānāyayiṣyāma: kṣipraṅ cādhyavasīyatām৷৷ 1.10.4৷৷


naracittapramāthibhi: overpowering the minds of men, abhimatai: dear, indriyārthai: with sensual pleasures, puram town, ānāyayiṣyāma: we will prompt him to come over, kṣipram quickly, adhyavasīyatām may it be determined.

By means of such things that can cause sensual pleasures and overpower the minds of men, we shall be able to bring him to the town. Let it be decided quickly (said the ministers)
gaṇikāstatra gacchantu rūpavatyassvalaṅkṛtā:.

pralōbhya vividhōpāyairānēṣyantīha satkṛtā:৷৷1.10.5৷৷


rūpavatya: beautiful, svalaṅkṛtā: well-attired, gaṇikā: courtesans, satkṛtā: well-treated by you, tatra there, gacchantu let them go, vividhōpāyai: by various means, pralōbhya alluring him, iha here, ānēṣyanti will bring him here.

Beautiful and well-adorned courtesans, may be sent there. They will allure him by various means and honourably bring him here.
śrutvā tathēti rājā ca pratyuvāca purōhitam.

purōhitō mantriṇaśca tathā cakruśca tē tadā৷৷1.10.6৷৷


rājā king, śrutvā having listened, tathā iti let it be done in that way, purōhitam priest, pratyuvāca replied, tadā then, purōhita: priest, tē those, mantriṇaśca ministsers, tathā in the same way, cakru: acted.

The king, having listened to these words, conveyed his approval saying, 'Let it be done that way'. The priests and ministers acted accordingly.
vāramukhyāśca tacchrutvā vanaṅ praviviśurmahat.

āśramasyāvidūrē.smin yatnaṅ kurvanti darśanē৷৷1.10.7৷৷

ṛṣiputrasya dhīrasya nityamāśramavāsina:.


tat śrutvā having heard this, vāramukhyā: beautiful courtesans, mahat great, vanam forest, praviviśu: entered, āśramasya of the hermitage, asmin avidūrē not at a distance, dhīrasya of that man having controlled senses, nityam always, āśramavāsina: residing in the forest, ṛṣiputrasya son of rishi, darśanē sight of, yatnam effort, kurvanti made.

Having heard this, beautiful courtesans entered the great forest and remaining at a place not far from the hermitage made efforts to steal a sight of this son of a sage (Rsyasringa), this forest dweller, this controller of the senses.
pitussanityasantuṣṭō nāticakrāma cāśramāt৷৷1.10.8৷৷

na tēna janmaprabhṛti dṛṣṭapūrvaṅ tapasvinā.

strī vā pumānvā yaccānyatsarvaṅ nagararāṣṭrajam৷৷ 1.10.9৷৷


nityasantuṣṭa: always contended, sa: Rsyasringa, pitu: father's, āśramāt from the hermitage, nāticakrāma never stirred out, tapasvinā by the ascetics, tēna by him, janmaprabhṛti from his birth, strī vā neither a woman, pumānvā nor a man, nagararāṣṭrajam born in towns or cities, sarvam all, yat anyat other creatures, na dṛṣṭapūrvam did not see earlier.

He (Rsyasringa) was always content and never stirred out of his father's hermitage. Absorbed in penance he had never seen a woman or a man nor any of the creatures born in towns or cities right from his birth.
tata: kadācittaṅ dēśamājagāma yadṛcchayā.

vibhaṇḍakasutastatra tāścāpaśyadvarāṅganā:৷৷1.10.10৷৷


tata: thereafter, kadācit on one day, vibhaṇḍakasuta: son of Vibhandaka, yadṛcchayā accidentally, taṅ dēśam towards that place, ājagāma came, tatra there, tā: those, varāṅganā: beautiful women, apaśyat saw.

One day this son of Vibhandaka (Rsyasringa) accidentally came to the place where he saw the beautiful women.
tāścitravēṣā: pramadā gāyantyō madhurasvarā:.

ṛṣiputramupāgamya sarvā vacanamabruvan৷৷ 1.10.11৷৷


citravēṣā: beautifully attired, madhurasvarā: having sweet voices, gāyantya: singing, tā: those pramadā: women, sarvā: all, ṛṣiputram Rsyasringa, upāgamya having approached, abruvan said.

Those wonderfully attired women singing with sweet voices approached the son of the sage (Rsyasringa) and said:
kastvaṅ kiṅ vartasē brahman jñātumicchāmahē vayam.

ēkastvaṅ vijanē ghōrē vanē carasi śaṅsa na:৷৷ 1.10.12৷৷


brahman O! Brahman, tvaṅ ka: who are you? kiṅ vartasē how are you subsisting? tvam you, ēka: alone, vijanē in a lonely, ghōrē dreadful, vanē in the forest, carasi you are roaming, vayam we, jñātum to know, icchāmahē desirous, na:śaṅsa tell us.

'O brahman! Who are you? How are you subsisting? We wish to know why you are roaming alone in this dreadful forest? Could you tell us.'
adṛṣṭarūpāstāstēna kāmyarūpā vanē striya:.

hārdāttasya matirjātā vyākhyātuṅ pitaraṅ svakam৷৷1.10.13৷৷


kāmyarūpā: women of charming appearance, tā: striya: those women, tēna by him, vanē in the forest, adṛṣṭarūpā: whose forms were never seen before, hārdāt due to affection, tasya for him, svakaṅ pitaram about his father, vyākhyātum narrating, mati: intention, jātā arose.

He had never seen such charming women in the forest. He developed affection towards them and a desire arose in him to speak about his father.
pitā vibhaṇḍakō.smākaṅ tasyāhaṅ suta aurasa:.

ṛśyaśṛṅga iti khyātaṅ nāma karma ca mē bhuvi৷৷1.10.14৷৷


vibhaṇḍaka: Vibhandaka, asmākam our, pitā father, aham I, tasya his, aurasa: suta: his own son, mē my, ṛśyaśṛṅga Rsyasringa, iti thus, nāma name, karma ca through result of an action (having one horn on his head), bhuvi world over, khyātam is known.

'My father is Vibhandaka. I am his own son. My name is Rsyasringa. I am known the world over by this name associated with my karma'.
ihāśramapadō.smākaṅ samīpē śubhadarśanā:.

kariṣyē vō.tra pūjāṅ vai sarvēṣāṅ vidhipūrvakam৷৷1.10.15৷৷


śubhadarśanā: O! auspicious looking women, asmākam our, āśramapada: hermitage, iha here, samīpē nearby, atra here, va: sarvēṣām to all of you, pūjām hospitable reception, vidhipūrvakam according to scriptural injunctions, kariṣyē I will extend.

'O auspicious-looking women, our hermitage is nearby. I will extend to you due hospitality'.
ṛṣiputravacaśśrutvā sarvāsāṅ matirāsa vai.

tadāśramapadaṅ draṣṭuṅ jagmussarvāśca tēna tā:৷৷ 1.10.16৷৷


ṛṣiputravaca: words of the son of ascetic, Rishyashringa, śrutvā having listened, sarvāsām for all those women, tat āśramapadam that hermitage, draṣṭum to see, mati: desire, āsa vai arose, sarvā: all of them, tēna with him, jagmu: ca accompanied.

After listening to the words of the sage's son (Rsyasringa), all the beautiful women with a desire to see the hermitage accompanied him.
āgatānāṅ tata: pūjāmṛṣiputraścakāra ha.

idamarghyamidaṅ pādyamidaṅ mūlamidaṅ phalaṅ ca na:৷৷1.10.17৷৷


tata: thereafter, ṛṣiputra: son of ascetic, idam this one, na: our, arghyam respectable offerings, idam this, pādyam water for washing feet, idam this, mūlam roots, phalaṅ ca fruits also, āgatānām for all those who have come, pūjām homage, cakāra ha performed.

Thereafter the son of ascetic respectfully received the the strangers saying, "(Accept) our offerings, here is water for washing feet and here are roots and fruits".
pratigṛhya ca tāṅ pūjāṅ sarvā ēva samutsukā:.

ṛṣērbhītāśca śīghraṅ tā gamanāya matiṅ dadhu:৷৷1.10.18৷৷


tā: sarvā: all of them, samutsukā: anxious persons, tāṅ pūjām those offerings, pratigṛhya having received, ṛṣē: of the ascetic, bhītā: feared, śīghram immediately, gamanāya to return, matim minds, dadhu: decided.

The anxious courtesans received the offerings and afraid of the ascetic's return, made up their minds to withdraw immediately.
asmākamapi mukhyāni phalānīmāni vai dvija .

gṛhāṇa prati bhadraṅ tē bhakṣayasva ca mā ciram৷৷1.10.19৷৷


dvija O! Brahmin, asmākam our, mukhyāni excellent, imāni phalānyapi these fruits also, pratigṛhāṇa you may accept, bhadram tē prosperity to you, bhakṣayasva you may eat, ciram mā do not delay.

'O brahmin, these are excellent fruits. May prosperity be to you. Accept them and eat them without delay.'
tatastāstaṅ samāliṅgya sarvā harṣasamanvitā:.

mōdakānpradadustasmai bhakṣyāṅśca vividhān bahūn৷৷1.10.20৷৷


tata: there upon, tā: sarvā: all of them, tam him, samāliṅgya embracing, harṣasamanvitā: they were filled with joy, tasmai for him, bahūn plentiful, mōdakān sweetmeats, vividhān various, bhakṣyāṅśca other articles of food, pradadu: gave.

Then, all the courtesans embracing him with joy, offered plentiful sweetmeats and various items of food.
tāni cāsvādya tējasvī phalānīti sma manyatē.

anāsvāditapūrvāṇi vanē nityanivāsinām৷৷1.10.21৷৷


tējasvī Rsyasringa, possessing the lustre of Brahma, vanē in the forest, nityanivāsinām of those who are always residing in the forest, anāsvāditapūrvāṇi which were not tasted earlier, tāni them, āsvādya having tasted, phalāni iti as fruits, manyatē sma thought about them.

The lustrous (Rsyasringa) who had never tasted any food other than what was offered by the permanent forest-dwellers mistook them for fruits.
āpṛcchya ca tadā vipraṅ vratacaryāṅ nivēdya ca.

gacchanti smāpadēśāttā bhītāstasya pitusstriya:৷৷1.10.22৷৷


tadā then, tā: striya: those women, vipram Rsyasringa, āpṛcchya bidding farewell, vratacaryām observance of religious austerities, nivēdya having made known, tasya his, pitu: for his father, bhītā: afraid of, apadēśāt on that pretext, gacchanti sma went away.

The ladies apprehensive of (the arrival of) his father took leave of him on the pretext of observance of (evening) rites.
gatāsu tāsu sarvāsu kāśyapasyātmajō dvija:.

asvasthahṛdayaścāsīddu:khaṅ sma parivartatē৷৷1.10.23৷৷


tāsu sarvāsu when all of them, gatāsu (satīṣu ) having departed, kāśyapasya Kasyapa's, ātmaja: son, dvija: brahmin, asvasthahṛdaya: restless in mind, āsīt remained, du:kham sorrow, parivartatē sma moved him around.

When they all departed, Kasyapa's son, the brahmin roamed (Rsyasringa) with a restless mind charged with sorrow.
tatō.parēdyustaṅ dēśamājagāma sa vīryavān.

manōjñā yatra tā dṛṣṭā vāramukhyāssvalaṅkṛtāḥ৷৷1.10.24৷৷


tata: afterwards, vīryavān possessing the power of penance, sa: he, aparēdyu: on the following day, manōjñā: pleasing to the mind, vāramukhyā: courtesans, svalaṅkṛtā: well-adorned, tā: the courtesans, yatra at which place, dṛṣṭā: were seen, taṅ dēśam that place, ājagāma came.

On the following day, the sage armed with the power of penance, came to the place where he had seen those enticing, well-adorned courtesans.
dṛṣṭvaiva ca tāstadā vipramāyāntaṅ hṛṣṭamānasā:.

upasṛtya tatassarvāstāstamūcuridaṅ vaca:৷৷1.10.25৷৷


tadā then, tā: they, āyāntam approaching, taṅ vipram that brahmin, dṛṣṭvā ēva after seeing him, hṛṣṭamānasā: rejoiced in mind, tā: sarvā: all of them, tata: thereafter, upasṛtya having approached, tam addressing him, idaṅ vaca: these words, ūcu: uttered.

All of them were rejoiced on seeing the brahmin approaching them, came nearer to him and said:
ēhyāśramapadaṅ saumya! hyasmākamiti cābruvan.

tatrāpyēṣa vidhiśśrīmān viśēṣēṇa bhaviṣyati৷৷1.10.26৷৷


hē saumya O! Gentleman, asmākam our, āśramapadam hermitage, ēhi you may come, tatra there, śrīmān lovely, ēṣa: vidhi: this hospitable treatment, viśēṣēṇa special, bhaviṣyati will be extended, iti ca also, abruvan spoke.

'O handsome one, come to our hermitage. A special, sumptuous hospitality will be extended to you', they said.
śrutvā tu vacanaṅ tāsāṅ sarvāsāṅ hṛdayaṅgamam.

gamanāya matiṅ cakrē taṅ ca ninyustadā striya:৷৷1.10.27৷৷


tāsāṅ sarvāsām all theirs, hṛdayaṅgamam pleasing to the mind, vacanam speech, śrutvā having heard, gamanāya to go forth, matim decison, cakrē made, tadā then, striya: those women, taṅ ninyu: took him away.

Having heard their words pleasing to the mind, he agreed to go with them. And the women took him away.
tatra cānīyamānē tu viprē tasminmahātmani.

vavarṣa sahasā dēvō jagatprahlādayaṅstadā৷৷1.10.28৷৷


mahātmani when the illustrious, tasmin viprē ascetic, ānīyamānē was being brought, tadā then, dēva: Parjanya, Presiding deity for rains, jagat earth, prahlādayan pleasing, sahasā at once, tatra there, vavarṣa rained.

As the illustrious sage was being brought (to Anga) the god of rain (Parjanya) suddenly inundated the earth which looked cherful (with rain).
varṣēṇaivāgataṅ vipraṅ viṣayaṅ svaṅ narādhipa:.

pratyudgamya muniṅ prahvaśśirasā ca mahīṅ gata:৷৷1.10.29৷৷


narādhipaḥ king Romapada, varṣēṇaiva along with rain, svam his own, viṣayam country, āgatam arrived, munim ascetic, vipram brahmin, (Rsyasringa), pratyudgamya gone out to welcome, prahva: bowed down humbly, śirasā with head, mahīm ground, gata: touched.

The king (Romapada) went out to welcome the ascetic, the brahmin who brought along with him rains to his country. He humbly bowed down his head and prostrated before him.
arghyaṅ ca pradadau tasmai nyāyatassusamāhita:.

vavrē prasādaṅ viprēndrānmā vipraṅ manyurāviśēt৷৷1.10.30৷৷


susamāhita: concentrating his mind, tasmai to him, arghyam ca offerings, nyāyata: righteously, pradadau gave, viprēndrāt from the brahmin (Rsyasringa), prasādam favour, vavrē sought, vipram sage Vibhandaka, manyu: anger, āviśēt did not pervade.

He gave that Indra among the brahmins offerings righteously with unstinted devotion and asked for his favour that he should not incur the wrath of the sage (his father Vibhandaka for having brought him to Anga).
anta:puraṅ praviśyāsmai kanyāṅ dattvā yathāvidhi.

śāntāṅ śāntēna manasā rājā harṣamavāpa sa:৷৷1.10.31৷৷

ēvaṅ sa nyavasattatra sarvakāmaissupūjita:.


sa: rājā the king, anta:puram inner apartment, praviśya having entered, kanyām daughter, śāntām Shanta, asmai for him, yathāvidhi in accordance with rules, datvā united him in marriage, śantēna peaceful, manasā mind, harṣam satisfaction, avāpa experienced.
sa: Rsyasringa, ēvam in this way, sarvakāmai: all desires, supūjita: respectfully ministered, tatra there, nyavasat lived.

The king entered the inner apartment, duly offered him his daughter Shanta in marriage and experienced peace and satisfaction.
Thus he (Rsyasringa) lived there, with all his desires fulfilled" (said Sumantra).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē daśamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the tenth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
