[Viswamitra requests king Dasaratha to send Rama to protect the sacrifice contemplated by him -- grief of Dasaratha.]

tacchrutvā rājasiṅhasya vākyamadbhutavistaram.

hṛṣṭarōmā mahātējā viśvāmitrō.bhyabhāṣata৷৷1.19.1৷৷


rājasiṅhasya of the lion among kings, Dasaratha, tat adbhutavistaram that astonishing detail, vākyam words, śrutvā having heard, mahātējā: highly vigorous, viśvāmitra: Viswamitra, hṛṣṭarōmā: having hair on the body bristling with joy, abhyabhāṣata said.

Having heard these wonderful words of Dasaratha, the lion among kings, the brilliant Viswamitra with hair on end replied:
sadṛśaṅ rājaśārdūla! tavaitadbhuvi nānyathā.

mahāvaṅśaprasūtasya vasiṣṭhavyapadēśina:৷৷1.19.2৷৷


rājaśārdūla O! Tiger among kings, bhuvi in this earth, mahākulaprasūtasya having born in an illustrious line, vasiṣṭhavyapadēśina: having been initiated by Vasishta, tava for you, ētat this, sadṛśam befitting, na anyathā not in any other way.

"O Tiger among kings! having been born on earth in an illustrious lineage and initiated by Vasishta, this way (of speaking) befits you. It cannot be any other way.
yattu mē hṛdgataṅ vākyaṅ tasya kāryasya niścayam.

kurūṣva rājaśārdūla! bhava satyapratiśrava:৷৷1.19.3৷৷


rājaśārdūla O! Great king, mē my, hṛdgatam conceived in my mind, yat whichever, vākyam word, tasya kāryasya for such purpose, niścayam decision, kuruṣva take, satyapratiśrava: bhava become truthful to your promise.

O Tiger among kings! I shall unfold the purpose conceived in my mind. Take a decision and be truthful to your promise.
ahaṅniyamamātiṣṭhē sidhyarthaṅ puruṣarṣabha.

tasya vighnakarau dvau tu rākṣasau kāmarūpiṇau৷৷1.19.4৷৷


puruṣarṣabha O! Best among men, aham I, sidhyartham for succesful accomplishment(of a sacrifice), niyamam religious discipline, ātiṣṭhē I shall abide, tu but, kāmarūpiṇau those assuming forms at free will, dvau two, rākṣasau rakshasas, tasya for that sacrifice, vighnakarau are creating impediments.

O best among men! for the successful completion of a sacrifice I took up a self-imposed religious observance. Two rakshasas, capable of assuming forms at will, are creating impediments to that sacrifice.
vratē mē bahuśaścīrṇē samāptyāṅ rākṣasāvimau.

mārīcaśca subāhuśca vīryavantau suśikṣitau৷৷1.19.5৷৷

samāṅsarudhiraughēṇa vēdiṅ tāmabhyavarṣatām.


bahuśa: In many ways, cīrṇē performed, mē my, vratē sacrifice, samāptyām nearing completion, vīryavantau powerful, suśikṣitau two well-trained beings, mārīcaśca Maricha, subāhuśca and also Subahu, samāṅsarudhiraughēṇa by the stream of blood along with flesh, tāṅ vēdim that altar, abhyavarṣatām rained.

When my sacrifice generally speaking, is nearing completion the powerful and well-trained Maricha and Subahu who are raining streams of blood and flesh upon the altar.
avadhūtē tathābhūtē tasminniyamaniścayē৷৷1.19.6৷৷

kṛtaśramō nirutsāhastasmāddēśādapākramē.


tasmin niyamaniścayē when the solemn vow for observance of that religious rite, avadhūtē was pushed aside, tathā bhūtē when it happened so, kṛtaśrama: an exerted man, nirutsāhaḥ discouraged, tasmāt dēśāt from that country, apākramē I left.

The (solemn) vow for observance of religious rites being thus interrupted, I left that country as an exerted and discouraged man.
na ca mē krōdhamutsraṣṭuṅ buddhirbhavati pārthiva৷৷1.19.7৷৷

tathā bhūtā hi sā caryā na śāpastatra mucyatē.


pārthiva O! King, krōdham wrath, utsraṣṭum to vent out, mē buddhi: na bhavati my mind does not permit, sā caryā that sacrificial perfomnce of sacrifice, tathā bhūtā hi is such that, tatra at that time, śāpa: curse, na mucyatē will not be released.

O King! my mind does not permit me to vent my wrath. The nature of sacrifice is such that I refrain from cursing them.
svaputraṅ rājaśārdūla! rāmaṅ satyaparākramam৷৷1.19.8৷৷

kākapakṣadharaṅ śūraṅ jyēṣṭhaṅ mē dātumarhasi.


rājaśārdūla O! Great king, satyaparākramam truthful to his prowess, kākapakṣadharam side-locks of hair, śūram valiant, svaputram your son, jyēṣṭham eldest one, rāmam Rama, mē to me, dātum to entrust, arhasi it is befitting of you.

O tiger among kings! it is befitting of you to entrust your eldest son Rama to me who is valiant, young (having side-locks of hair) and true to his prowess.
śaktō hyēṣa mayā guptō divyēna svēna tējasā৷৷1.19.9৷৷

rākṣasā yē vikartārastēṣāmapi vināśanē.


mayā by me, gupta: protected, ēṣa: he, divyēna by the divine, svēna his own, tējasā by power, yē vikartāra: those causing impediments, rākṣasā: rakshasas, tēṣāmapi even to them, vināśanē in destroying, śakta: hi is capable.

Protected by me and by his own divine power, Rama is capable of destroying even those demons causing impediments to the sacrifice.
śrēyaścāsmai pradāsyāmi bahurūpaṅ na saṅśaya:৷৷1.19.10৷৷

trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṅ yēna khyātiṅ gamiṣyati.


asmai for him, bahurūpam several forms of, śrēyaśca blessings for his well-being, pradāsyāmi I will confer, saṅśaya:na no doubt, yēna by which, trayāṇām of the three, lōkānāmapi worlds also, khyātim fame, gamiṣyati he will attain.

I will confer upon him, without doubt, a lot of blessings for his well-being by which he will attain fame in all the three worlds.
na ca tau rāmamāsādya śaktau sthātuṅ kathañcana৷৷1.19.11৷৷

na ca tau rāghavādanyō hantumutsahatē pumān.


tau Maricha and Subahu, rāmam Rama, āsādya having reached, kathañcana in any way, sthātum stand, na śaktau not be able, rāghavāt except Rama, anya: any other, pumān man, tau both of them, hantum to slay, na utsahatē will not be capable.

Both of them (Maricha and Subahu) will not be able to withstand Rama in any way. Rama, and Rama alone, is capable of destroying them.
vīryōtsiktau hi tau pāpau kālapāśavaśaṅ gatau৷৷1.19.12৷৷

rāmasya rājaśārdūla !na paryāptau mahātmana:.


vīryōtsiktau proud of their strength, tau pāpau those two wicked demons, kālapāśavaśam noosed by of Yama, the god of death, gatau (have) become, rājaśārdūla O! Great king, mahātmana: of the magnanimous, rāmasya for Rama, na paryāptau no match.

Proud of their strength, the two wicked demons have been noosed by Yama, the god of death. O tiger among kings! they are no match for the magnanimous Rama.
na ca putrakṛtasnēhaṅ kartumarhasi pārthiva!৷৷1.19.13৷৷

ahaṅ tē pratijānāmi hatau tau viddhi rākṣasau.


pārthiva O! King, putrakṛtam developed towards your son, snēham paternal affection, kartum to do, na arhasi it is not proper for you, tau rākṣasau both those rakshasas, hatau (will) perish, viddhi know it well, aham I, tē to you, pratijānāmi I assure you.

"O king! it is not proper for you to hesitate because of your paternal affection. You need to know that both the rakshasas will perish. This, I assure you.
ahaṅ vēdmi mahātmānaṅ rāmaṅ satyaparākramam৷৷1.19.14৷৷

vasiṣṭhō.pi mahātējā yē cēmē tapasi sthitā:.


mahātmānam noble-minded, satyaparākramam truthful to his prowess, rāmam Rama, aham I, vēdmi I know, mahātējā: highly lustrous, vasiṣṭhō.pi Vasishta also, yē tapasi sthitā: those who are steadfast in asceticism, imē sages.

I know Rama who is a great soul, true to his prowess and also Vasishta of great lustre and these other sages who have been steadfast in asceticism also know.
yadi tē dharmalābhaṅ ca yaśaśca paramaṅ bhuvi৷৷1.19.15৷৷

sthitamicchasi rājēndra rāmaṅ mē dātumarhasi.


rājēndra O! Great king, tē to you, dharmalābham benefits of righteousness, icchasi yadi if you are seeking, paramam great, yaśaśca fame, bhuvi in this world, sthitam everlasting, rāmam Rama, mē to me, dātum to give me, arhasi it is proper and fit.

O king of kings, if you are seeking the benefits of righteousness, great everlasting
fame in this world, it is fit and proper to give Rama to me.
yadihyanujñāṅ kākutstha! dadatē tava mantriṇa:৷৷1.19.16৷৷

vasiṣṭhapramukhā: sarvē tatō rāmaṅ visarjaya.


kākutstha O! Kakustha, tava your, mantriṇa: counsellors, vasiṣṭhapramukhā: Vasistha, being the foremost among them, sarvē all, anujñām consent, dadatē yadi if they give, tata: then, rāmam Rama, visarjaya you may relieve him.

O Kakustha! if your counsellors and all other sages headed by Vasishta give their consent, then only you may relieve Rama.
abhiprētamasaṅsaktamātmajaṅ dātumarhasi৷৷1.19.17৷৷

daśarātraṅ hi yajñasya rāmaṅ rājīvalōcanam.


abhiprētam dear to you, ātmajam son, rājīvalōcanam lotus-eyed, rāmam Rama, asaṅsaktam impartial and detached, yajñasya of the sacrifice, daśarātram ten days, dātum arhasi you deserve to give.

You should spare your dear son, the lotus-eyed Rama, impartial and detached, for ten nights.
nātyēti kālō yajñasya yathā.yaṅ mama rāghava৷৷1.19.18৷৷

tathā kuruṣva bhadraṅ tē mā ca śōkē mana: kṛthā:.


rāghava O! Descendent of Raghu, Dasaratha, mama my, yajñasya this sacrifice, ayaṅ kāla: the time, yathā in whichever manner, nātyēti does not get delayed, tathā in that manner, kuruṣva act, śōkē in grief, mana: mind, mā kṛthā: do not indulge, bhadraṅ prosperity, tē to you.

O (Dasaratha), descendant of Raghu! act in such a manner that the time for my sacrifice is not delayed. Do not indulge in grief. Prosperity to you!"
ityēvamuktvā dharmātmā dharmārthasahitaṅ vaca:৷৷1.19.19৷৷

virarāma mahātējā viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:.


dharmātmā virtuous, mahātējā: resplendent, mahāmuni: great sage, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, ityēvam in this manner, dharmārthasahitam meaing containing religious merit, vaca: words, uktvā having spoken, virarāma became silent.

After speaking these words charged with dharma and artha the great sage resplendent Viswamitra fell silent.
sa tanniśamya rājēndrō viśvāmitravacaśśubham৷৷1.19.20৷৷

śōkamabhyagamattīvraṅ vyaṣīdata bhayānvita:.


sa:rājēndra: that Indra of kings, king Dasaratha, śubham auspicious, tat viśvāmitravaca: those words of Visvamitra, niśamya having listened, tīvram intense, śōkam grief, abhyagamat obtained, bhayānvita: over powered by fear, vyaṣīdata became despondent.

Having listened to those auspicious words of Viswamitra, the king among kings, (Dasaratha) experienced intense grief out of fear. He became despondent.
iti hṛdayamanōvidāraṇaṅ

munivacanaṅ tadatīva śuśruvān.

narapatirabhavanmahāṅstadā

vyathitamanā: pracacāla cāsanāt৷৷1.19.21৷৷


iti in this manner, hṛdayamanōvidāraṇam breaking the heart and mind, tat munivacanam those words of sage Visvamitra, śaśruvān listened, mahān revered, narapati: king, tadā then, atīva vyathitamanā: abhavat was exstreemly mentally agitated, āsanāt from his throne, cacāla ca was shaken.

The great king felt shaken off his throne after listening to the words of the sage (Viswamitra) which broke his heart and terribly upset his mind.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ēkōnaviṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the nineteenth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
