[Dasaratha sends Rama and Lakshmana with Viswamitra--Viswamitra confers

knowledge of bala and atibala to Rama and Lakshmana.]

prahṛṣṭavadanō rāmamājuhāva salakṣmaṇam৷৷1.22.1৷৷


vasiṣṭhē when Vasistha, tathā in that manner, bruvati having said, rājā the king, daśaratha: Dasaratha, prahṛṣṭavadana: with cheerful countenance, svayam himself, salakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, ājuhāva summoned.

Vasishta having said thus, king Dasaratha, with cheerful countenance summoned Rama and Lakshmana.
kṛtasvastyayanaṅ mātrā pitrā daśarathēna ca.

purōdhasā vasiṣṭhēna maṅgalairabhimantritam৷৷1.22.2৷৷

sa putraṅ mūrdhnyupāghrāya rājā daśaratha: priyam.

dadau kuśikaputrāya suprītēnāntarātmanā৷৷1.22.3৷৷


sa: daśaratha: rājā that king Dasaratha, mātrā by mother, pitrā daśarathēna ca by father Dasaratha (by himself), kṛtasvastyayanam giving farewell by recitation of mantras for securing prosperity and averting evils, purōdhasā vasiṣṭhēna by priest Vasishta, maṅgalai: by auspicious, abhimantritam making sacred by recitation of special mantras, priyam putram affectionate son, mūrdhni on the forehead, upāghrāya having kissed, suprītēna with a pleased, antarātmanā heart, kuśikaputrāya for kusika's son, dadau delivered Rama (to the care of Viswamitra).

Rama was given farewell by his parents with recitation of mantras (for securing prosperity and averting evils). Priest Vasishta sanctified him with mantras Dasaratha kissed his son on the forehead and delivered him to the care of Viswamitra, with a heart full of cheer.
tatō vāyussukhasparśō nīrajaskō vavau tadā.

viśvāmitragataṅ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṅ rājīvalōcanam৷৷1.22.4৷৷


tata: then, rājīvalōcanam lotus-eyed, rāmam Rama, viśvāmitragatam going with Visvamitra, dṛṣṭvā havingseen, tadā then, vāyu: wind, sukhasparśa: with agreeable touch, nīrajaska: without pollen, vavau breezed.

At the sight of the lotus-eyed Rama accompanying Viswamitra, the wind blew pollen-free with a gentle touch.
puṣpavṛṣṭirmahatyāsīddēvadundubhinisvanai:.

śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣa: prayātē tu mahātmani৷৷1.22.5৷৷


mahātmani glorious Visvamitra, prayātē tu when he had departed, mahatī incessant, puṣpavṛṣṭi: showers of flowers, dēvadundubhinisvanai: with the sounds of celestial drums, śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣa: āsīt sounds of blowing conches and beating drums arose.

The departure of glorious Viswamitra was greeted with incessant showers of flowers, the beating of celestial drums and the blowing of conches.
viśvāmitrō yayāvagrē tatō rāmō dhanurdhara:.

kākapakṣadharō dhanvī taṅ ca saumitriranvagāt৷৷1.22.6৷৷


viśvāmitra: Viswamitra, agrē in the forefront, yayau walked, tata: behind him, dhanurdhara: with bow in his hand, rāma: Rama (followed), kākapakṣadhara: having side locks of hair, dhanvī an archer, saumitri: Sumitra's son Lakshmana, tam anvagāt followed him.

Viswamitra walked in the forefront. Behind him was Rama, bow in hand, while in the archer, Sumitra's son (Lakshmana) with side locks of hair followed.
kalāpinau dhanuṣpāṇī śōbhamānau diśō daśa .

viśvāmitraṅ mahātmānaṅ triśīrṣāviva pannagau৷৷1.22.7৷৷

anujagmaturakṣudrau pitāmahamivāśvinau.


kalāpinau equipped with quivers, dhanuṣpāṇī the twain with bows in their hands, daśa diśa: in ten cardinal points, śōbhamānau illuminating, akṣudrau warriors of not a little prowess and splendour, triśīrṣau three hooded, pannagau iva resembling two serpents, mahātmānam magnanimous, viśvāmitram Visvamitra, aśvinau twin Aswini devatas, pitāmahamiva like Brahma, anujagmatu: followed.

Rama and Lakshmana equipped with bows and quivers resembled three hooded serpents. Warriors of no less prowess, they illuminated the ten quarters and followed the high souled Viswamitra like twin Aswanikumaras following the grandsire, Brahma.
tadā kuśikaputraṅ tu dhanuṣpāṇī svalaṅkṛtau৷৷1.22.8৷৷

baddhagōdhāṅgulitrāṇau khaḍgavantau mahādyutī .

kumārau cāruvapuṣau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ৷৷1.22.9৷৷

anuyātau śriyā dīptau śōbhayētāmaninditau.

sthāṇuṅ dēvamivācintyaṅ kumārāviva pāvakī ৷৷1.22.10৷৷


tadā then, dhanuṣpāṇī bows in their hands, svalaṅkṛtau well-attired, baddhagōdhāṅgulitrāṇau their left arms covered by leather to protect from bow-string and fingers encased in Gauna skin, khaḍgavantau armed with scimitars, mahādyutī resplendent, kumārau youthful beings, cāruvapuṣau having elegent physique, śriyā with lustre, dīptau radiating, aninditau faultless, bhrātarau brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, anuyātau following the sage, pāvakī born to fire-god, kumārau sons Skanda and Visakhu, acintyam incomprehensible, dēvam god, sthāṇum iva like Iswara, kuśikaputram son of Kausika, śōbhayētām cast their radiance.

Then bows in hand, well-attired, their fingers encased in mongrel skin, for protection (against the bow-string) armed with scimitars, resplendent, young, handsome the two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana shone unblemished. As they followed sage Viswamitra spreading radiance, they looked like sons of the god of fire, (Skanda and Visakhu) following the incomprehensible Siva.
adhyardhayōjanaṅ gatvā sarayvā dakṣiṇē taṭē.

rāmēti madhurāṅ vāṇīṅ viśvāmitrō.bhyabhāṣata৷৷1.22.11৷৷


adhyardhayōjanam more than a half Yojana, gatvā having travelled, sarayvā: river Sarayu, dakṣiṇē taṭē on southern bank, vaśvāmitra: Viswamitra, rāma iti addressing him as "O Rama!", madhurām sweet, vāṇīm words, abhyabhāṣata spoke.

After crossing a distance of over half a yojana on the southern bank of Sarayu, Viswamitra addressed Rama sweet in a gentle voice.
gṛhāṇa vatsa! salilaṅ mā bhūtkālasya paryaya:.

mantragrāmaṅ gṛhāṇa tvaṅ balāmatibalāṅ tathā৷৷1.22.12৷৷


vatsa O! Child, salilam water, gṛhāṇa take into your hands, kālasya paryaya:mābhūt let no delay occur, tvam you, mantragrāmam collection of mantras, tathā and, balām Bala, atibalāṅ Atibala, gṛhāṇa receive.

"O child, take this water (in your hands), let there be no delay. You will receive from me a collection of mantras and also bala and atibala.
na śramō na jvarō vā tē na rūpasya viparyaya:.

na ca suptaṅ pramattaṅ vā dharṣayiṣyanti nairaṛtā:৷৷1.22.13৷৷


tē to you, śrama:na neither fatigue, jvarō vā nor fever, rūpasya viparyaya: na nor change in appearance, suptam whether in sleep, pramattaṅ vā or inattentive condition, nairṛtā: rakshasas, na dharṣayiṣyanti cannot trouble you.

"(If you receive these mantras), you will experience neither fatigue, nor fever nor will there be a change in your appearance. Whether you are asleep or agitated, rakshasas cannot harm you.
na bāhvōssadṛśō vīryē pṛthivyāmasti kaścana.

triṣu lōkēṣu vai rāma! na bhavētsadṛśastava ৷৷1.22.14৷৷


rāma O! Rama, bāhvō: of your hands, vīryē in might, sadṛśa: parallel man, kaścana anyone, pṛthivyām in this earth, nāsti does not exist, triṣu in the three, lōkēṣu worlds, tava sadṛśa: equal to you, na bhavēt does not exist.

O Rama, there is none in this world equal to the might of your hands nor does such a person exist in the three worlds.
na saubhāgyē na dākṣiṇyē na jñānē buddhiniścayē.

nōttarē prativaktavyē samō lōkē tavā.nagha৷৷1.22.15৷৷


anagha O! Sinless one, saubhāgyē in auspiciouness, tava sama: equal to you, lōkē in this world, na none, dākṣiṇyē in kindness, na none, jñānē in wisdom, buddhiniścayē in decision-making, na none, uttarē when a reply, prativaktavyē has to be given, na none.

O sinless one, there is none in this world equal to you in good fortune, kindness, wisdom, in taking a decsion or giving a reply.
ētadvidyādvayē labdhē bhavitā nāsti tē sama:.

balātvatibalā caiva sarvajñānasya mātarau৷৷1.22.16৷৷


ētadvidyādvayē when these two kinds of knowledge, labdhē sati have been secured, tē sama: equal to you, nāsti there will not be, na bhavitā nor going to be in future, balā Bala, atibalā caiva Atibala also, sarvajñānasya for all kinds of knowledge, mātarau mothers.

With these two kinds of knowledge secured, there will be none equal to you, at present or in fututre. Bala and atibala are mother to all kinds of knowledge .
kṣutpipāsē na tē rāma! bhaviṣyētē narōttama !.

balāmatibalāṅ caiva paṭhata: pathi rāghava৷৷1.22.17৷৷


narōttama O! Best among men, rāghava O!born in the line of Raghu, rāma O!Rama,pathi on the way, balām Bala, atibalāṅ caiva Atibala, paṭhata: if recited, tē to you, kṣutpipāsē hunger or thirst, na bhaviṣyētē will not get.

O Rama, best among men, scion in the line of Raghu, on your way you will not feel hunger or thirst if you recite bala and atibala.
vidyādvayamadhīyānē yaśaścāpyatulaṅ tvayi.

pitāmahasutē hyētē vidyē tējassamanvitē৷৷1.22.18৷৷

pradātuṅ tava kākutstha! sadṛśastvaṅ hi dhārmika!.


vidyādvayam these two sciences, adhīyānē when pursued, tvayi by you, atulam unequalled, yaśaśca fame, kakutstha O!Rama, born in the line Kakutstha, dhārmika one who conforms to justice, tējassamanvitē both possessed of virtues, pitāmahasutē two daughters of grand sire, Brahma, ētē vidyē these sciences, tava to you, pradātum conferring, tvam you, sadṛśa: fit person.

O Rama, born in the line Kakutstha and one who is righteous, these two radiant sciences are daughters of the grandsire Brahma. If you pursue these two sciences, you will get unequalled fame. You are a fit person to confer these two sciences.
kāmaṅ bahuguṇāssarvē tvayyētē nātra saṅśaya:.

tapasā sambhṛtē caitē bahurūpē bhaviṣyata:৷৷1.22.19৷৷


ētē bahuguṇā: these many qualities, sarvē all, kāmam very-well, tvayi in you, atra in this matter, saṅśaya: na no doubt, tapasā with asceticism, sambhṛtē nourished, ētē these two sciences, bahurūpē multiple forms, bhaviṣyata: will assume.

You possess all these qualities in great measure. There is no doubt that If these two sciences (mantras) are nourished with austerities they will assume multiple forms (and benefit you)".
tatō rāmō jalaṅ spṛṣṭvā prahṛṣṭavadanaśśuci:.

pratijagrāha tē vidyē maharṣērbhāvitātmana:৷৷1.22.20৷৷


tata: thereafter, rāma: Rama, jalam water, spṛṣṭvā having touched, śuci: got purified, prahṛṣṭavadana: with happy coutenance, bhāvitātmana: one who has perceived the supreme soul, maharṣē: from maharshi, tē vidyē those two sciences, pratijagrāha received.

Thereafter Rama, touched the water and was sanctified. With a cheerful face he received those two sciences from the maharshi who had perceived the supreme soul.
vidyāsamuditō rāmaśśuśubhē bhūrivikrama:.

sahasraraśmirbhagavān śaradīva divākara:৷৷1.22.21৷৷

gurukāryāṇi sarvāṇi niyujya kuśikātmajē.

ūṣustāṅ rajanīṅ tatra sarayvāṅ susukhaṅ traya:৷৷1.22.22৷৷


bhūrivikrama: a highly valiant hero, rāma: Rama, vidyāsamudita: possessed of the knowledge of the two sciences, kuśikātmajē in the matter of Visvamitra, sarvāṇi all, gurukāryāṇi services to be rendered in relation to a preceptor, niyujya having performed, śaradi like in autumnal season, sahasraraśmi: (Sun) emitting thousand rays, bhagavān divākara:iva resembling Sun-god, śuśubhē appeared resplendent, traya: the three men, tatra there, sarayvām on the bank of river Sarayu, sasukham with great comfort, tāṅ rajanīm that night, ūṣu: dwelt.

Rama, the highly heroic after acquiring knowledge (of the two sciences) and having rendered all services to preceptor Viswamitra, appeared resplendent like the Sun-god in autumn. There the three of them spent the night comfortably on the bank of Sarayu.
daśarathanṛpasūnusattamābhyāṅ

tṛṇaśayanē.nucitē sahōṣitābhyām.

kuśikasutavacō.nulālitābhyāṅ

sukhamiva sā vibabhau vibhāvarī ca৷৷1.22.23৷৷


anucitē unaccustomed, tṛṇaśayanē on the bed of grass, sahōṣitābhyām by those two who slept together, kuśikasutavacō.nulālitābhyām who were put in good humour by the gentle words of Visvamitra, daśarathanṛpasūnusattamābhyām by the two eminent sons of Dasaratha (Rama and Lakshmana), sā vibhāvarī ca that night also, sukhamiva as if with comfort, vibabhau occured to their mind.

The night was spent as though with comfort by the two eminent sons of Dasaratha, who shared the unaccustomed bed of grass. They were kept in good humour by the words of Kusika's son.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē dvāviṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the twentysecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
