[Viswamitra confers celestial weapons on Rama]
अथ तां रजनीमुष्य विश्वामित्रो महायशाः।
प्रहस्य राघवं वाक्यमुवाच मधुराक्षरम्।।1.27.1।।

Sloka & Translation
अथ thereafter, महायशाः illustrious, विश्वामित्रः Visvamitra, तां रजनीम् that night, उष्य having stayed, प्रहस्य smiling, राघवम् addresseing, मधुराक्षरम् with sweet accents, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच spoke.
The night over, illustrious Viswamitra called Rama with a sweet smile.
परितुष्टोऽस्मि भद्रं ते राजपुत्र महायशः।
प्रीत्या परमया युक्तो ददाम्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः।।1.27.2।।

महायशः of great renown, राजपुत्र O Prince, परितुष्टः अस्मि I am extremely pleased, ते भद्रम् May you prosper, परमया प्रीत्या with great love and affection, युक्तः filled with, अस्त्राणि weapons, सर्वशः from all over, ददामि I shall give.
"O prince of great renown, I am extremely pleased. May you prosper Out of great love and affection for you I shall make over all the weapons.
देवासुरगणान्वापि सगन्धर्वोरगानपि।
यैरमित्रान् प्रसह्याजौ वशीकृत्य जयिष्यसि।।1.27.3।।
तानि दिव्यानि भद्रं ते ददाम्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ।
यैरमित्रान् प्रसह्याजौ वशीकृत्य जयिष्यसि।।1.27.3।।
तानि दिव्यानि भद्रं ते ददाम्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ।
यैः by means of which, देवासुरगणान्वापि even multitude of devatas, asuras, सगन्धर्वोरगानपि nagas together with gandharvas, अमित्रान् enemies, आजौ in the battle, प्रसह्य forcibly, वशीकृत्य taking them captives, जयिष्यसि you will vanquish, तानि दिव्यानि such celestial, अस्त्राणि weapons, सर्वशः completely, ददामि I shall give, ते भद्रम् May you prosper.
With the help of these celestial weapons, you will vanquish even gods and demons, serpents together with gandharvas if they challenge you to a battle as enemies and take them as captives. I shall confer on you all such weapons. May you prosper

ददामि ते महाबाहो ब्राह्ममस्त्रमनुत्तमम्।

राघव Rama, महत् great, दिव्यम् celestial, दण्डचक्रम् Danda chakra, तव to you, दास्यामि I shall grant, नरश्रेष्ठ O Best among men, महाबाहो mighty armed one, वीर heroic, राघव Rama, ततः thereafter, धर्मचक्रम् Dharma chakra तथैव च also, कालचक्रम् Kala chakra, तथा also, विष्णुचक्रम् Visnu chakra, तथैव च also, ऐन्द्रम् अस्त्रम् IndraAstra, वज्रम् अस्त्रम् Vajra astra, तथा thereafter, शैवम् relating to Shiva, शूलवरम् superior spear, ब्रह्मशिर known as Brahma Shira, अस्त्रम् astra, ऐषीकमपि Ishika astra, अनुत्तमम् highly superior, ब्राह्मम् अस्त्रम् Brahma astra, ते to you, ददामि I shall give.
Mighty armed, heroic Rama I shall grant you the great celestial dandachakra. O best among men I shall grant you dharmachakra, kalachakra, visnuchakra, indraastra, vajraastra and the great, trident of Siva, brahmashirastra, ishika astra and highly superior brahmaastra.
गदे द्वे चैव काकुत्स्थ मोदकी शिखरी उभे।।1.27.7।।
प्रदीप्ते नरशार्दूल प्रयच्छामि नृपात्मज।

काकुत्स्थ born in the race of Kakutstha, नरशार्दूल best among men, नृपात्मज O Prince, Rama, प्रदीप्ते shining, द्वे two, मोदकी शिखरी Modaki and Shikhari, गदे two Maces, उभे both of them, प्रयच्छामि I shall give.
Born in the race of kakutstha and a tiger among men, O Rama I shall also grant two shining maces known as modaki and shikhari.
धर्मपाशमहं राम कालपाशं तथैव च।।1.27.8।।
पाशं वारुणमस्त्रं च ददाम्यहमनुत्तमम्।
पाशं वारुणमस्त्रं च ददाम्यहमनुत्तमम्।
राम O Rama, अहम् I, धर्मपाशम् Dharma Pasa, तथैव च and also, कालपाशम् Kala Pasa, वारुणम् relating to Varuna, पाशम् Pasa, अस्त्रं च and also an astra, अनुत्तमम् च highly superior, ददामि I shall grant.
Rama, I shall grant dharmapasa, kalapasa, varuna pasa, too unique weapons.
अशनी द्वे प्रयच्छामि शुष्कार्द्रे रघुनन्दन।।1.27.9।।
ददामि चास्त्रं पैनाकमस्त्रं नारायणं तथा।
ददामि चास्त्रं पैनाकमस्त्रं नारायणं तथा।
रघुनन्दन O Descendent of Raghu, Rama, शुष्कार्द्रे Shuska and Ardra, (dry and wet), द्वे two, अशनी thunderbolts, पैनाकम् अस्त्रम् Painaka astra, तथा and, नारायणम् अस्त्रम् Narayana astra, ददामि I shall grant.
O descendant of Raghu I shall grant you two thunderbolts named shuska and ardra (dry and wet), painaka astra and narayanaastra.
आग्नेयमस्त्रं दयितं शिखरं नाम नामतः।।1.27.10।।
वायव्यं प्रथनं नाम ददामि च तवानघ ।
वायव्यं प्रथनं नाम ददामि च तवानघ ।
अनघ O Blemishless one, नामतः by name, शिखरं नाम wellknown as Sikhara, दयितम् a dear one, आग्नेयम् अस्त्रम् Agneya astra, प्रथनं नाम by name Prathana, वायव्यम् Vayavya astra, तव to you, ददामि shall grant.
O blemishless Rama I shall grant you agneyaastra known as sikhara which is my
favour weapon and vayavyaastra known as prathana৷৷
अस्त्रं हयशिरो नाम क्रौञ्चमस्त्रं तथैव च।
शक्तिद्वयं च काकुत्स्थ ददामि तव राघव।।1.27.11।।

काकुत्स्थ born in the Kakutstha race, राघव Rama, हयशिरो नाम named Hayasira, अस्त्रम् astra, तथैव च also, क्रौञ्चमस्त्रम् Krauncha astra, शक्तिद्वयं च two powers, तव to you, ददामि I shall grant.
O Rama bron in the Kakutstha race, I shall grant you two powers named hayasira (Horse head) and kraunchaastra.
कङ्कालं मुसलं घोरं कापालमथ कङ्कणम्।
धारयन्त्यसुरा यानि ददाम्येतानि सर्वशः।।1.27.12।।

घोरम् dreadful, कङ्कालम् Kankala, मुसलम् pounding pestle, कापालम् Kapala, अथ and, कङ्कणम् Kankana, यानि all these, असुराः asuras, धारयन्ति are holding, एतानि such weapons, सर्वशः completely, ददामि I shall grant.
I shall grant all these weapons, the dreadful kankala, pestle kapala and kankana used by asuras.
वैद्याधरं महास्त्रं च नन्दनं नाम नामतः।
असिरत्नं महाबाहो ददामि च नृपात्मज।।1.27.13।।

महाबाहो O Mighty armed one, नृपात्मज O Prince, वैद्याधरम् pertaining to Vaidyadharas, महास्त्रं च maha astra, नामतः by name, नन्दनं नाम known as Nandana, असिरत्नम् excellent scimitar, ददामि I shall grant.
O mightyarmed prince, I shall grant mahaastra, vaidyadhara and an excellent scimitar known as nandana.
गान्धर्वमस्त्रं दयितं मानवं नाम नामतः।
प्रस्वापनप्रशमने दद्मि सौरं च राघव।।1.27.14।।

राघव O Rama, गान्धर्वम् अस्त्रम् Gandharva astra, नामतः by name, मानवं नाम known as Manava, दयितम् much favoured, प्रस्वापन प्रशमने inducing and suppressing sleep, सौरं च Saura astra, दद्मि I shall grant.
Rama, I shall grant two much favoured weapons namely gandharvaastras, manava astra, which induce and suppress sleep and sauraastra as well.
दर्पणं शोषणं चैव सन्तापनविलापने।
मदनं चैव दुर्धर्षं कन्दर्पदयितं तथा।।1.27.15।।
पैशाचमस्त्रं दयितं मोहनं नाम नामतः।
प्रतीच्छ नरशार्दूल राजपुत्र महायशः।।1.27.16।।
मदनं चैव दुर्धर्षं कन्दर्पदयितं तथा।।1.27.15।।
पैशाचमस्त्रं दयितं मोहनं नाम नामतः।
प्रतीच्छ नरशार्दूल राजपुत्र महायशः।।1.27.16।।
महायशः O Highly renowned one, नरशार्दूल O Best among men, राजपुत्र O Prince, दर्पणम् darpana, शोषणं चैव soshana(the parching weapon), सन्तापनविलापने Santhapana, Vilapana (those which induce sorrow and wailing), तथा also, दुर्धर्षम् unassailable, कन्दर्पदयितम् favoured by Manmatha, मदनं च Madana, नामतः by name, मोहनं नाम known as Mohana, दयितम् favoured one, पैशाचम् अस्त्रम् Paisacha Astra, प्रतीच्छ you may receive.
O renowned prince, best among men, receive these astras known as darpana, soshana, santhapana, vilapana, madana astra, the unassailable one favoured by kamadeva and the paisacha astra known as mohana favoured by demons.
तामसं नरशार्दूल सौमनं च महाबल।
संवर्धं चैव दुर्धर्षं मौसलं च नृपात्मज।।1.27.17।।
सत्यमस्त्रं महाबाहो तथा मायाधरं परम्।
घोरं तेजः प्रभं नाम परतेजोऽपकर्षणम्।।1.27.18।।
सौम्यास्त्रं शिशिरं नाम त्वष्टुरस्त्रं सुदामनम्।
दारुणं च भगस्यापि शितेषु मथ मानवम्।।1.27.19।।
संवर्धं चैव दुर्धर्षं मौसलं च नृपात्मज।।1.27.17।।
सत्यमस्त्रं महाबाहो तथा मायाधरं परम्।
घोरं तेजः प्रभं नाम परतेजोऽपकर्षणम्।।1.27.18।।
सौम्यास्त्रं शिशिरं नाम त्वष्टुरस्त्रं सुदामनम्।
दारुणं च भगस्यापि शितेषु मथ मानवम्।।1.27.19।।
नरशार्दूल O Best among men, महाबल highly strong, नृपात्मज O Prince, तामसम् Tamasa, सौमनं चैव Saumana, दुर्धर्षम् चैव also unassilable, संवर्धं Samavardha, मौसलम् Mausala, सत्यम् अस्त्रम् Satya astra, परम् supreme, मायाधरम् Maya dhara astra, परतेजोपकर्षणम् removing the energy of the opponent, घोरम् fearful, तेजः प्रभम् नाम named Teja Prabha, शिशिरं नाम named Sisira, सौम्यास्त्रम् Saumya astra(a soft weapon), सुदामनम् supremely formidable, त्वष्टुः Twashtu's, अस्त्रम् astra, भगस्य Bhaga's, दारुणम् terrible, शितेषुम् sharparrowed astra, अथ and, मानवम् Manava, प्रतीच्छस्व accept.
O tiger among men mighty prince, accept tamasa and saumanaastras, the unassailable, samavardha weapon, mausala, satyaastra, the supreme mayadhara astra, the terrible tejaprabhaastra capable of removing the energy of the opponent, a soft weapon called sisira, supremely formidable twashtus astra, Bhaga's terrible shiteshuastra (sharp arrowed one) and manava astra.
एतान् राम महाबाहो कामरूपान् महाबलान् ।
गृहाण परमोदारान् क्षिप्रमेव नृपात्मज।।1.27.20।।

महाबाहो O Mighty armed one, नृपात्मज O Prince, राम O Rama, कामरूपान् capable of assuming any form at will, महाबलान् mighty, परमोदारान् highly exalted, एतान् these astras, क्षिप्रमेव immediately, गृहाण you may receive.
O Rama mightyarmed prince, receive these mighty and highly exalted astras capable of assuming at once any form at will".
स्थितस्तु प्राङ्मुखो भूत्वा शुचिर्मुनिवरस्तदा।
ददौ रामाय सुप्रीतो मन्त्रग्राममनुत्तमम्।।1.27.21।।

तदा thereafter, मुनिवर he exalted one among ascetics, शुचि having purified himself, प्रङ्मुखः turning his face towards east, स्थितः भूत्वा standing, सुप्रीतः wellpleased, रामाय for Rama, अनुत्तमम् preeminently best, मन्त्रग्रामम् collection of mantras, ददौ gave.
Viswamitra, the greatest ascetic after the purification ritual stood with his face turned east and happily, conferred on Rama collection of the unique mantras.
सर्वसङ्ग्रहणं येषां दैवतैरपि दुर्लभम्।
तान्यस्त्राणि तदा विप्रो राघवाय न्यवेदयत्।।1.27.22।।

येषाम् of those weapons', सर्वसङ्ग्रहणम् complete acquisition, दैवतैरपि even by the celestials, दुर्लभम् difficult to be attained, तानि such, अस्त्राणि astras, तदा then, विप्रः Visvamitra, राघवाय for Rama, न्यवेदयत् made known.
The sage offered Rama the complete collection of those weapons which even the celestials find it difficult to acquire.
जपतस्तु मुनेस्तस्य विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः।
उपतस्थुर्महार्हाणि सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि राघवम्।।1.27.23।।

धीमतः of the sagacious, तस्य मुनेः ascetic Viswamitra, जपतः while muttering in a subdued tone, महार्हाणि venerable, अस्त्राणि astras, सर्वाणि all, राघवम् for Rama, उपतस्थुः (reached) served.
While the sagacious ascetic Viswamitra was muttering the mystic terms of these venerable astras (addressing their respective deities), all these weapons (with their mystic power) attended on Rama.
ऊचुश्च मुदितास्सर्वे रामं प्राञ्जलयस्तदा।
इमे स्म परमोदाराः किङ्करास्तव राघव।।1.27.24।।

परमोदाराः highly munificient, सर्वे all presiding deities of the weapons, तदा then, प्रञ्जलयः with folded palms, ऊचुश्च uttered, राघव Rama, इमे स्म here we are, तव your, किङ्कराः servants.
The munificient presiding deities of the weapons with folded palms addressed these words to Rama saying, "Here we are, at you disposal ".
प्रतिगृह्य च काकुत्स्थः समालभ्य च पाणिना।
मानसा मे भविष्यध्वमिति तानभ्यचोदयत्।।1.27.25।।

काकुत्स्थ O Rama, प्रतिगृह्य haivng received them, पाणिना with hand, समालभ्य touching them, मे my, मानसाः भविष्यध्वम् इति be recorded in my mind, saying so, तान् them, अभ्यचोदयत् ordered them.
Rama received the astras he felt with his hands and commanded them saying, "Live in my mind" (serve me whenever I remember you).
ततः प्रीतमना रामो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम्।
अभिवाद्य महातेजा गमनायोपचक्रमे।।1.27.26।।

ततः thereafter, महातेजाः highly splendorous, रामः Rama, प्रीतमनाः with pleased mind , विश्वामित्रं Visvamitra, महामुनिम् mighty ascetic, अभिवाद्य bowing with respect, गमनाय for his journey, उपचक्रमे commenced.
Thereafter, the cheerful Rama, bowed to the mighty ascetic Viswamitra and commenced his journey.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे सप्तविंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
