[Sri Rama slays rakshasas and protects the sacrifice of Viswamitra]

अथ तौ देशकालज्ञौ राजापुत्रावरिन्दमौ।

देशे काले च वाक्यज्ञावब्रूतां कौशिकं वच:।।1.30.1।।


अथ then, देशकालज्ञौ two knowledgeable persons with regard to time and place, अरिन्दमौ subduers of enemies, देशे in a particular place, काले च and time, वाक्यज्ञौ knowers of speech, तौ both, राजपुत्रौ two princes, कौशिकम् addressing Visvamitra, वच: words, अब्रूताम् they spoke.

Thus spoke the two princes to Viswamitra. They were conscious of place and time to speak and capable of conquering enemies.
भगवन् श्रोतुमिच्छावो यस्मिन् काले निशाचरौ।

संरक्षणीयौ तौ ब्रह्मन्नातिवर्तेत तत्क्षणम्।।1.30.2।।


भगवन् O Adorable one, ब्रह्मन् O Brahmarshi, तौ निशाचरौ those two rakshasas, यस्मिन् काले in whatever time, संरक्षणीयौ to be protectd, श्रोतुम् to listen, इच्छाव: we are both desirous, तत् क्षणम् that moment, नातिवर्तेत shall not pass away.

"O adorable Brahmarshi, we want to know around what time the rakshasas will make their appearance so that the sacrifice can be protected. Let not that moment pass".
एवं ब्रुवाणौ काकुत्स्थौ त्वरमाणौ युयुत्सया।

सर्वे ते मुनय: प्रीता: प्रशशंसुर्नृपात्मजौ।।1.30.3।।


काकुत्स्थौ Rama and Lakshmana, एवम् in this manner, ब्रुवाणौ speaking thus, युयुत्सया with a desire to fight rakshasas, त्वरमाणौ with eagerness, नृपात्मजौ two princes, ते मुनय: those sages, सर्वे all, प्रीता: pleased, प्रशशंसु: extolled them.

The sages (of the asrama) were very pleased. They extolled the princes of Kakustha dynasty, who were eager to fight the rakshasas.
अद्यप्रभृति षड्रात्रं रक्षतं राघवौ युवाम्।

दीक्षां गतो ह्येष मुनिर्मौनित्वं च गमिष्यति।।1.30.4।।


राघवौ Rama and Lakshmana, युवाम् both of you, अद्यप्रभृति from today onwards, षड्रात्रम् six nights, रक्षतम् you may protect, एष: मुनि: this sage Visvamitra, दीक्षाम् initiation ceremony, गत: has entered, मौनित्वं च strict silence also, गमिष्यति will attain.

"O sons of Raghu's lineage protect the sacrifice for six nights from today. With the ceremoney initiated, the sage would observe silence said the inmates".
तौ तु तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रौ यशस्विनौ।

अनिद्रौ षडहोरात्रं तपोवनमरक्षताम्।।1.30.5।।


यशस्विनौ the two illustrious, तौ राजपुत्रौ the two princes, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having heard, षडहोरात्रम् six days and six nights, अनिद्रौ without sleep, तपोवनम् Tapovana, अरक्षताम् protected.

At these words of the sages the illustrious princes got ready to protect the tapovana for six days and six nights without sleep.
उपासाञ्चक्रतुर्वीरौ यत्तौ परमधन्विनौ।

ररक्षतुर्मुनिवरं विश्वामित्रमरिन्दमौ।।1.30.6।।


परमधन्विनौ two mighty archers, वीरौ two heroes, यत्तौ fully equipped, उपासाञ्चक्रतु: attended upon the sacrifice, अरिन्दमौ two destroyers of enemies, विश्वामित्रम् मुनिवरम् Visvamitra maharshi, ररक्षतु: protected.

The two mighty, heroic archers (Rama and Lakshmana), destroyers of enemies
attended upon the sacrifice in order to protect sage Viswamitra.
अथ काले गते तस्मिन् षष्ठेऽहनि समागते।

सौमित्रिमब्रवीद्रामो यत्तो भव समाहित:।।1.30.7।।


अथ then, तस्मिन् काले when that period, गते had lapsed, षष्ठे when the sixth, अहनि day, समागते had approached, राम: Rama, सौमित्रिम् addressing Lakshmana, यत्त: be ready, समाहित: भव be vigilant, अब्रनवीत् spoke.

Time passed. When the sixth day arrived Rama cautioned Lakshmana to be vigilant.
रामस्यैवं ब्रुवाणस्य त्वरितस्य युयुत्सया।

प्रजज्वाल ततो वेदिस्सोपाध्यायपुरोहिता।।1.30.8।।


युयुत्सया with a keen desire to fight, त्वरितस्य eagerly awaiting, रामस्य Rama, एवम् in this manner, ब्रुवाणस्य while speaking, तत: thereafter, सोपाध्यायपुरोहिता surrounded by officiating priests and spiritual guides(reciters of the sacred hymns), वेदि: sacrificial altar, प्रजज्वाल inflammed.

While he was fracing up for a fight, the fire on the sacrificial altar with the officiating priests and spiritual guides suddenly brightened.
सदर्भचमसस्रुक्का ससमित्कुसुमोच्चया।

विश्वामित्रेण सहिता वेदिर्जज्वाल सर्त्विजा।।1.30.9।।


सदर्भचमसस्रुक्का along with kusa grass,the ladles and square vessels(used in the sacrifice out of which all the worshippers at a sacrifice drink the juice), ससमित्कुसुमोच्चया along with bundles of sticks used in the sacrificial fire and collection of flowers, विश्वामित्रेण सहिता along with Visvamitra, सर्त्विजा along with officiating priests, वेदि: altar, जज्वाल got inflammed.

vessels, bundles of sticks and flowers, (used in the sacrificfial fire) got brightened up.
मन्त्रवच्च यथान्यायं यज्ञोऽसौ सम्प्रवर्तते।

आकाशे च महान् शब्द: प्रादुरासीद्भयानक:।।1.30.10।।


असौ यज्ञ: this sacrifice, मन्त्रवत् in accordance with mantras, यथान्यायम् properly, सम्प्रवर्तते was being performed, आकाशे in the sky, भयानक: causing fear, महान् शब्द: great sound, प्रादुरासीत् emerged.

While the sacrifice was being performed in accordance with mantras, a great sound causing fear emerged from the sky.
आवार्य गगनं मेघो यथा प्रावृषि निर्गत:।

तथामायां विकुर्वाणौ राक्षसावभ्यधावताम्।।1.30.11।।


प्रावृषि in the rainy season, निर्गत: originated, मेघ: clouds, यथा like, तथा similarly, गगनम् sky, आवार्य having covered, राक्षसौ two rakshasas, मायाम् illusion, विकुर्वाणौ displaying, अभ्यधावताम् came running.

Like the clouds in the rainy season, the two rakshasas (Maricha and Subahu), covering the sky through their power of illusion, came running (to the sacrificial place).
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च तयोरनुचराश्च ये।

आगम्य भीमसङ्काशा रुधिरौघमवासृजन्।।1.30.12।।


भीमसङ्काशा fearful appearance, मारीचश्च Maricha, सुबाहश्च Subahu, तयो: their, ये अनुचरा: those of the followers, आगम्य having arrived, रुधिरौघम् streams of blood, अवासृजन् rained.

Maricha and Subahu of fearful appearance arrived with their followers and rained streams of blood (on the sacrificial altar).
सा तेन रुधिरौघेण वेदिर्जज्वाल मण्डिता।

सहसाऽभिद्रुतो रामस्तानपश्य त्ततो दिवि।।1.30.13।।


तेन रुधिरौघेण by that stream of blood, मण्डिता drenched, सा वेदि: that sacrificial altar, जज्वाल inflammed, तत: then, सहसा immediately, अभिद्रुत: rushed forward, राम: Rama, दिवि in the sky, तान् them, अपश्यत् beheld.

Flames rose on the sacrificial altar drenched by the stream of blood. Immediately Rama rushed forward and beheld them in the sky.
तावापतन्तौ सहसा दृष्ट्वा राजीवलोचन:।

लक्ष्मणं त्वभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य रामो वचनमब्रवीत्।।1.30.14।।


राजीवलोचन: the lotuseyed, राम: Rama, सहसा suddenly, आपतन्तौ advancing towards, तौ them, दृष्ट्वा having seen, लक्ष्मणम् addressing Lakshmana, अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य fixing his sight at him, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Having seen them (Maricha and Subahu) suddenly advancing the lotuseyed Rama gazed at Lakshmana and said:
पश्य लक्ष्मण दुर्वृत्तान् राक्षसान् पिशिताशनान्।

मानवास्त्रसमाधूताननिलेन यथा घनान्।।1.30.15।।


लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, दुर्वृत्तान् wicked behavioured, पिशिताशनान् human flesh eaters, राक्षसान् rakshasas, अनिलेन by wind, घनान् यथा like clouds, मानवास्त्रसमाधूतान् scattered away by Manava astra, पश्य behold.

"O Lakshmana, behold, by manavaastra I shall chase, like clouds scattered by winds those wicked rakshasas who eat human flesh".
मानवं परमोदारमस्त्रं परमभास्वरम्।

चिक्षेप परमक्रुद्धो मारीचोरसि राघव:।।1.30.16।।


राघव: Rama, परमोदारम् greatly powerful, परमभास्वरम् highly effulgent, मानवम् Manava, अस्त्रम् astra, परमक्रुद्ध: exceedingly furious, मारीचोरसि in the chest of Maricha, चिक्षेप hurled.

The inflamed Rama hurled the highly powerful and effulgent Manavaastra on the chest of Maricha.
स तेन परमास्त्रेण मानवेन समाहित:।

संपूर्णं योजनशतं क्षिप्तस्सागरसम्प्लवे।।1.30.17।।


तेन by that, मानवेन Manava, परमास्त्रेण powerful astra, समाहित: smitten, स: he, Maricha, सम्पूर्णम् completely at a distance of, योजनशतम् hundred yojanas, सागरसम्प्लवे in the surging high seas, क्षिप्त: was cast away.

Smitten by that powerful Manavaastra, Maricha was thrown to a full distance of hundred yojanas into the surging high seas.
विचेतनं विघूर्णन्तं शीतेषु बलताडितम्।

निरस्तं दृश्य मारीचं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्।।1.30.18।।


शीतेषु बलताडितम् beaten by the power of that cool astra, विचेतनम् without senses, विघूर्णन्त म् reeling, निरस्तम् thrown at a distance, मारीचम् Maricha, दृश्य having seen, राम: Rama, लक्ष्मणम् addressing Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Having seen Maricha beaten by the power of that coolarrowed astra, thrown to a distance, reeling and lying unconscious, Rama spoke to Lakshmana:
पश्य लक्ष्मण शीतेषुं मानवं धर्मसंहितम्।

मोहयित्वा नयत्येनं न च प्राणैर्व्ययुज्यत।।1.30.19।।


लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, धर्मसंहितम् associated with righteousness, मानवं शीतेषुम् Manava astra employing cool arrow, पश्य behold, एनं मोहयित्वा making him unconscious, नयति is carrying away, प्राणै: with his life, न व्ययुज्यत he is not separated.

"O Lakshmana behold this Manavaastra associated with righteousness employing a cool arrow, which carries him away by making him unconscious and yet not taking his life.
इमानपि वधिष्यामि निर्घृणान् दुष्टचारिण:।

राक्षसान् पापकर्मस्थान् यज्ञघ्नान् रुधिराशनान्।।1.30.20।।
 

निर्घृणान् merciless, दुष्टचारिण: of wicked behaviour, पापकर्मस्थान् doers of sinful acts, यज्ञघ्नान् destroyers of sacrifices, रुधिराशनान् blood-thirsty, इमान् राक्षसानपि these rakshasas also, वधिष्यामि I will slay them.

"I shall slay these merciless, wicked, doers of sinful acts, destroyers of sacrifices and blood-thirsty rakshasas".
सङ्गृह्यास्त्रं ततो रामो दिव्यमाग्नेयमद्भुतम्।

सुबाहूरसि चिक्षेप सविद्ध: प्रापतद्भुवि।।1.30.21।।


तत: then, राम: Rama, दिव्यम् celestial, अद्भुतम् marvellous, आग्नेयास्त्रम् Agneya weapon, सङ्गृह्य having taken, सुबाहूरसि in the chest of Subahu, चिक्षेप hurled, स: he, विद्ध: having been struck down, भुवि on the ground, प्रापतत् fell down.

Then Rama took hold of the celestial, marvellous Agneya weapon and hurled it into the chest of Subahu. Struck, Subahuhe fell down on the ground.
शेषान् वायव्यमादाय निजघान महायशा:।

राघव: परमोदारो मुनीनां मुदमावहन्।।1.30.22।।


महायशा: illustrious, परमोदार: highly generous, राघव: Rama, मुनीनाम् for Ascetics, मुदम् delight, आवहन् causing, वायव्यम् Vayavya weapon, आदाय seizing, शेषान् remaining, निजघान killed.

Illustrious and highly generous Rama killed the remaining rakshasas with the Vayavya weapon to the delight of the ascetics.
स हत्वा राक्षसान् सर्वान् यज्ञघ्नान् रघुनन्दन:।

ऋषिभि: पूजितस्तत्र यथेन्द्रो विजये पुरा।।1.30.23।।


रघुनन्दन: Rama, यज्ञघ्नान् obstructors of sacrifice, राक्षसान् rakshasas, सर्वान् all, हत्वा having killed, पुरा formerly, विजये when victorious, इन्द्र: यथा like Indra, तत्र there, ऋषिभि: by saints, पूजित: was worshipped.

Having killed the rakshasas, obstructors of sacrifices, Rama was worshipped by the hermits like Indra was honoured in the past when he was victorious.
अथ यज्ञे समाप्ते तु विश्वामित्रो महामुनि:।

निरीतिका दिशो दृष्टवा काकुत्स्थमिदमब्रवीत्।।1.30.24।।


अथ thereafter, यज्ञे when the sacrifice, समाप्ते was completed, विश्वामित्र: महामुनि: maharshi Visvamitra, निरीतिका:दिश: all the directions bereft of evils, दृष्टवा after beholding, काकुत्स्थम् addressing Rama, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् uttered.

Thereafter, when the sacrifice was completed, maharshi Viswamitra beholding all the directions bereft of evils, said to Rama:
कृतार्थोऽस्मि महाबाहो कृतं गुरुवचस्त्वया।

सिद्धाश्रममिदं सत्यं कृतं राम महायश:।।1.30.25।।


महाबाहो O Mighty armed one, कृतार्थ:अस्मि I have achieved my spiritual desire, त्वया by you, गुरुवच: father's commands, कृतम् has been performed, महायश: OIllustrious one, राम Rama, इदम् this, सिद्धाश्रमम् Siddha ashrama, सत्यं कृतम् has been proved to be true to its name.

"O mightyarmed Rama I am fulfilled. Your father's commands have been executed. O
Illustrious one, Siddhaashrama has proved true to its name".
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे त्रिंशस्सर्ग:।।02
Thus ends the thirtieth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
