[The birth of Gadhicommendation of Kausikidescription of midnight.]

कृतोद्वाहे गते तस्मिन् ब्रह्मदत्ते च राघव।

अपुत्र: पुत्रलाभाय पौत्रीमिष्टिमकल्पयत्।।1.34.1।।


राघव O Rama, तस्मिन् ब्रह्मदत्ते when that Brahmadatta, कृतोद्वाहे got married, गते had gone, अपुत्र: king without sons, पुत्रलाभाय in order to obtain a son, पौत्रीम् इष्टिम् Putreshti, अकल्पयत् performed.

"O son of Raghu's dynasty (Rama) Brahmadatta got married and left for his kingdom. Now a putreshti was performed by king Kusanabha in order to beget a son.
इष्ट्यां तु वर्तमानायां कुशनाभं महीपतिम्।

उवाच परमोदार: कुशो ब्रह्मसुतस्तदा।।1.34.2।।


तदा then, इष्ट्याम् when Putreshti, वर्तमानायाम् was being performed, परमोदार: highly generous, ब्रह्मसुत: son of Brahma, कुश: Kusa, कुशनाभमहीपतिम् king Kusanabha, उवाच spoke.

Then, while putreshti was on Kusa the highly generous son of Brahma, said to king Kusanabha :
पुत्रस्ते सदृश: पुत्र भविष्यति सुधार्मिक:।

गाधिं प्राप्स्यसि तेन त्वं कीर्तिं लोके च शाश्वतीम्।।1.34.3।।


पुत्र O My son, ते सदृश: similar to yourself, सुधार्मिक: highly virtuous, पुत्र: son, भविष्यति will be born, गाधिम् named Gadhi, प्राप्स्यसि you will obtain, तेन by him, त्वम् you, शाश्वतीम् everlasting, लोके in this world, कीर्तिं च fame also (will obtain).

"O son, a highly virtuous son named Gadhi, similar to you will be born. Because of him you will obtain everlasting fame throughtout this world".
एवमुक्त्वा कुशो राम कुशनाभं महीपतिम्।

जगामाकाशमाविश्य ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनाम्।।1.34.4।।


राम O Rama, कुश: Kusa, महीपतिम् king, कुशनाभम् Kusanabha, एवम् in this way, उक्त्वा having spoken, आकाशम् the sky, आविश्य having entered, सनातनम् eternal, ब्रह्मलोकम् Brahmaloka, जगाम had gone.

"O Rama so saying to king Kusanabha, Kusa left through space for the eternal Brahmaloka".
कस्य चित्त्वथ कालस्य कुशनाभस्य धीमत:।

जज्ञे परमधर्मिष्ठो गाधिरित्येव नामत:।।1.34.5।।


अथ thereafter, कस्यचित्कालस्य after sometime, धीमत: of the sagacious, कुशनाभस्य Kusanabha's, परमधर्मिष्ठ: supremely righteous one, नामत: by name, गाधि: इत्येव known as Gadhi, जज्ञे was born.

After some time, a supremely righteous son by name Gadhi was born to the sagacious Kusanabha.
स पिता मम काकुत्स्थ गाधि: परमधार्मिक:।

कुशवंशप्रसूतोऽस्मि कौशिको रघुनन्दन ।।1.34.6।।


काकुत्स्थ O Rama, परमधार्मिक: highly virtuous, स: गाधि: Gadhi, मम पिता my father, रघुनन्दन O Rama, कुशवंशप्रसूत: born in the family of Kusa, कौशिक: अस्मि I am known as Kausika.

O son of Raghu's dynasty the highly virtuous Gadhi is my father. I am known as Kausika being born in the family of Kusa.
पूर्वजा भगिनी चापि मम राघव सुव्रता।

नाम्ना सत्यवती नाम ऋचीके प्रतिपादिता।।1.34.7।।


राघव O Rama, सुव्रता adherent of best religious practices, नाम्ना by name, सत्यवती नाम as Satyavati, मम my, पूर्वजा भगिनी elder sister, ऋचीके for Richika, प्रतिपादिता was bestowed.

O Raghava adherent of best religious practices, is my elder sister well known by name Satyavati. She was bestowed in marriage to Richika.
सशरीरा गता स्वर्गं भर्तारमनुवर्तिनी।

कौशिकी परमोदारा प्रवृत्ता च महानदी।।1.34.8।।


भर्तारम् her husband, अनुवर्तिनी following, सशरीरा with human body, स्वर्गम् heaven, गता had gone, परमोदारा highly generous, कौशिकी named Kausiki, महानदी sacred river, प्रवृत्ता च flowed.

Following her husband my highly generous sister reached heaven with her human body and down assuming the form of a sacred river, flowed Kausiki.
दिव्या पुण्योदका रम्या हिमवन्तमुपाश्रिता।

लोकस्य हितकामार्थं प्रवृत्ता भगिनी मम।।1.34.9।।


लोकस्य for the world, हितकामार्थम् for the welfare and pleasure, प्रवृत्ता flowed, दिव्या divine, पुण्योदका sacred waters, रम्या beautiful, मम my, भगिनी sister, हिमवन्तम् Himavat mountain, उपाश्रिता took asylum.

Conferring the benefit of the other world and worldly pleasures on men my sister Kausiki who is divine and beautiful having sacred waters took resort in Himavat mountain and started flowing from there.
ततोऽहं हिमवत्पार्श्वे वसामि निरतस्सुखम्।

भगिन्यां स्नेहसंयुक्त: कौशिक्यां रघुनन्दन।।1.34.10।।


रघुनन्दन O Rama, तत: then onwards, भगिन्याम् in my sister, कौशिक्याम् in Kausiki, स्नेहसंयुक्त: possessed of affection, अहम् I, निरत: enjoying, हिमवत्पार्श्वे on the side of Himavat mountain, सुखम् happily, वसामि I am living.

O son of the Raghus', from then onwards with affection towards my sister Kausiki, I am living happily in the vicinity of Himavat mountains.
सा तु सत्यवती पुण्या सत्ये धर्मे प्रतिष्ठिता।

पतिव्रता महाभागा कौशिकी सरितां वरा।।1.34.11।।


सा सत्यवती that Satyavati, पुण्या sacred, सत्ये in truth, धर्मे in righteousness, प्रतिष्ठिता established, पतिव्रता chaste, महाभागा holy, सरितां वरा best among rivers, कौशिकी Kausiki.

Satyavati is sacred, firmly established in truth and righteousness. She is chaste holy and best among rivers. She is known as river Kausiki.
अहं हि नियमाद्राम हित्वा तां समुपागत:।

सिद्धाश्रममनुप्राप्य सिद्धोऽस्मि तव तेजसा।।1.34.12।।


राम Rama, अहम् हि I indeed, नियमात् for religious observance, तां हित्वा leaving her, समुपागत: have come, सिद्धाश्रमम् Siddha ashrama, अनुप्राप्य having reached, तव by your, तेजसा valour, सिद्ध: अस्मि I have fulfilled my desire.

Rama, for the sake of observance of austerity I have come to Siddhaashrama leaving her behind. Having reached here, I have fulfilled my desire through your valour.
एषा राम ममोत्पत्तिस्स्वस्य वंशस्य कीर्तिता।

देशस्य च महाबाहो यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि।।1.34.13।।


महाबाहो O Mighty armed one, राम O Rama, एषा मम this is my, स्वस्य वंशस्य my family's, देशस्य च of the place also, उत्पत्ति: origin, कीर्तिता narrated, यत् which, त्वम् you, माम् me, परिपृच्छसि are asking for.

O mightyarmed Rama since you asked me I narrated this, my origin, the history of my family and the history of this place.
गतोऽर्धरात्र: काकुत्स्थ कथा: कथयतो मम।

निद्रामभ्येहि भद्रं ते मा भूद्विघ्नोऽध्वनीह न:।।1.34.14।।


काकुत्स्थ O Rama, मम for me, कथा: stories, कथयत: while narrating, अर्धरात्र: midnight, गत: has passed by, निद्राम् sleep, अभ्येहि acquire, ते भद्रम् prosperity to you, इह here, न: for us, अध्वनि on the way, विघ्न: obstacles, माभूत् let not take place.

O son of the Kakusthas while telling my stories, midnight has passed by. Go to sleep now. Prosperity to you. Let there be no obstacles on our way.
निष्पन्दास्तरवस्सर्वे निलीनमृगपक्षिण:।

नैशेन तमसा व्याप्ता दिशश्च रघुनन्दन।।1.34.15।।


रघुनन्दन O Rama, सर्वे तरव: all trees, निष्पन्दा: are motionless, निलीन मृगपक्षिण: with beasts and birds resting calmed, दिशश्च all directions, नैशेन relating to night, तमसा with the darkness, व्याप्ता: pervaded.

O son of the Raghus' the trees stand motionless, with the beasts and birds calm, all directions are pervaded with darkness.
शनैर्वियुज्यते सन्ध्या नभो नेत्रैरिवावृतम् ।

नक्षत्रतारागहनं ज्योतिर्भिरिव भासते।।1.34.16।।


सन्ध्या evening time, शनै: gradually, वियुज्यते is separated, नक्षत्रतारागहनम् filled with stars and planets, नभ: sky, ज्योतिर्भि: इव as if with shining stars, नेत्रै: eyes, आवृतम् इव like covered, भासते is shining.

Evening has gradually disappeared. The sky is littered with stars and planets gleaming points of light as though they are the eyes of the skies.
उत्तिष्ठति च शीतांशुश्शशी लोकतमोनुद:।

ह्लादयन् प्राणिनां लोके मनांसि प्रभया विभो।।1.34.17।।


विभो O Rama, शीतांशु: having cool rays, शशि moon, लोकतमोनुद: dispelling the darkness of world, प्रभया with moon light, लोके in this world, प्राणिनाम् of the living beings, मनांसि minds, ह्लादयन् delighting, उत्तिष्ठति is rising higher and higher.

O Lord the Moon with his cool rays, dispelling the darkness of the earth and delighting the minds of all living beings in this world, is rising higher and higher.
नैशानि सर्वभूतानि प्रचरन्ति ततस्तत:।

यक्षराक्षससङ्घाश्च रौद्राश्च पिशिताशना:।।1.34.18।।


नैशानि nocturnal, सर्वभूतानि all living beings, यक्षराक्षससङ्घाश्च groups of yakshas and rakshasas, रौद्रा: dreadful, पिशिताशनाश्च eaters of human flesh, ततस्तत: here and there, प्रचरन्ति are moving.

All nocturnal creatures groups of yakshas and rakshasas and dreadful eaters of human flesh are moving here and there".
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा विरराम महामुनि:।

साधु साध्विति तं सर्वे ऋषयो ह्यभ्यपूजयन्।।1.34.19।।


महातेजा: highly lustrous, महामुनि: great ascetic, एवम् उक्त्वा having spoken in this way, विरराम rested, सर्वे मुनय: all sages, साधु साधु इति well said, well said, thus, तम् him, अभ्यपूजयन् praised.

Having spoken thus the highly lustrous, great ascetic rested. All sages praised him,
saying, "wellsaid wellsaid"
कुशिकानामयं वंशो महान् धर्मपरस्सदा।

ब्रह्मोपमा महात्मान: कुशवंश्या नरोत्तमा:।।1.34.20।।


कुशिकानाम् of those belonging to the family of Kusa, अयम् वंश: this is the dynasty, महान् venerable, सदा always, धर्मपर: devoted to virtue, कुशवंश्या: belonging to Kusa dynasty, नरोत्तमा: foremost of men, महात्मान: highly revered, ब्रह्मोपमा: similar to god Brahma.

This is the family of the Kusas, venerable always devoted to dharma, foremost of men, great like Lord Brahma.
विशेषेण भवानेव विश्वामित्रो महायशा:।

कौशिकी सरितां श्रेष्ठा कुलोद्योतकरी तव।।1.34.21।।


महायशा: highly illustrious, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, भवानेव you, yourself, विशेषेण especially (you are similar to Brahma), सरिताम् among rivers, श्रेष्ठा the best, कौशिकी Kausiki, तव your, कुलोद्योतकरी brightening the image of your dynasty.

"Highly illustrious Viswamitra, you are similar to Brahma. Among the rivers, Kausiki is the best, refurbishing the image of your dynasty".
इति तैर्मुनिशार्दूलै: प्रशस्त: कुशिकात्मज: ।

निद्रामुपागमच्छ्रीमान् अस्तंगत इवांशुमान्।।1.34.22।।


इति In this way, तै: by them, मुनिशार्दूलै: by the best of ascetics, प्रशस्त: praised, श्रीमान् the auspicious one, कुशिकात्मज: son of Kusika, श्रीमान् the lustrous, अंशुमान् Sun, अस्तगतमिव setting behind Asta mountains, निद्राम् sleep, उपागमत् obtained.

In this way, adored by the best of ascetics, the auspicious son of Kusika, went to sleep like the lustrous Sun setting.
रामोऽपि सहसौमित्रि: किञ्चिदागतविस्मय:।

प्रशस्य मुनिशार्दूलं निद्रां समुपसेवते।।1.34.23।।


सह सौमित्रि: along with Lakshmana, रामोऽपि Rama also, किञ्चित् little, आगतविस्मय: with surprise, मुनिशार्दूलम् to the best of ascetics, प्रशस्य praising, निद्राम् sleep, समुपसेवते enjoyed.

Rama as well as Lakshmana, with a sense of wonder went to sleep full of admiration for the great ascetic.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डेण्डे चतुस्त्रिंशस्सर्ग:।।
Thus ends the thirtyfourth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
