[The birth of Gadhi-commendation of Kausiki-description of mid-night.]

kṛtōdvāhē gatē tasmin brahmadattē ca rāghava.

aputra: putralābhāya pautrīmiṣṭimakalpayat৷৷1.34.1৷৷


rāghava O! Rama, tasmin brahmadattē when that Brahmadatta, kṛtōdvāhē got married, gatē had gone, aputra: king without sons, putralābhāya in order to obtain a son, pautrīm iṣṭim Putreshti, akalpayat performed.

"O son of Raghu's dynasty (Rama)! Brahmadatta got married and left for his kingdom. Now a putreshti was performed by king Kusanabha in order to beget a son.
iṣṭyāṅ tu vartamānāyāṅ kuśanābhaṅ mahīpatim.

uvāca paramōdāra: kuśō brahmasutastadā৷৷1.34.2৷৷


tadā then, iṣṭyām when Putreshti, vartamānāyām was being performed, paramōdāra: highly generous, brahmasuta: son of Brahma, kuśa: Kusa, kuśanābhamahīpatim king Kusanabha, uvāca spoke.

Then, while putreshti was on Kusa the highly generous son of Brahma, said to king Kusanabha :
putrastē sadṛśa: putra bhaviṣyati sudhārmika:.

gādhiṅ prāpsyasi tēna tvaṅ kīrtiṅ lōkē ca śāśvatīm৷৷1.34.3৷৷


putra O! My son, tē sadṛśa: similar to yourself, sudhārmika: highly virtuous, putra: son, bhaviṣyati will be born, gādhim named Gadhi, prāpsyasi you will obtain, tēna by him, tvam you, śāśvatīm everlasting, lōkē in this world, kīrtiṅ ca fame also (will obtain).

"O son, a highly virtuous son named Gadhi, similar to you will be born. Because of him you will obtain everlasting fame throughtout this world".
ēvamuktvā kuśō rāma! kuśanābhaṅ mahīpatim.

jagāmākāśamāviśya brahmalōkaṅ sanātanām৷৷1.34.4৷৷


rāma O! Rama, kuśa: Kusa, mahīpatim king, kuśanābham Kusanabha, ēvam in this way, uktvā having spoken, ākāśam the sky, āviśya having entered, sanātanam eternal, brahmalōkam Brahmaloka, jagāma had gone.

"O Rama! so saying to king Kusanabha, Kusa left through space for the eternal Brahmaloka".
kasya cittvatha kālasya kuśanābhasya dhīmata:.

jajñē paramadharmiṣṭhō gādhirityēva nāmata:৷৷1.34.5৷৷


atha thereafter, kasyacitkālasya after sometime, dhīmata: of the sagacious, kuśanābhasya Kusanabha's, paramadharmiṣṭha: supremely righteous one, nāmata: by name, gādhi: ityēva known as Gadhi, jajñē was born.

After some time, a supremely righteous son by name Gadhi was born to the sagacious Kusanabha.
sa pitā mama kākutstha! gādhi: paramadhārmika:.

kuśavaṅśaprasūtō.smi kauśikō raghunandana ৷৷1.34.6৷৷


kākutstha O! Rama, paramadhārmika: highly virtuous, sa: gādhi: Gadhi, mama pitā my father, raghunandana O! Rama, kuśavaṅśaprasūta: born in the family of Kusa, kauśika: asmi I am known as Kausika.

O son of Raghu's dynasty! the highly virtuous Gadhi is my father. I am known as Kausika being born in the family of Kusa.
pūrvajā bhaginī cāpi mama rāghava! suvratā.

nāmnā satyavatī nāma ṛcīkē pratipāditā৷৷1.34.7৷৷


rāghava O! Rama, suvratā adherent of best religious practices, nāmnā by name, satyavatī nāma as Satyavati, mama my, pūrvajā bhaginī elder sister, ṛcīkē for Richika, pratipāditā was bestowed.

O Raghava! adherent of best religious practices, is my elder sister well known by name Satyavati. She was bestowed in marriage to Richika.
saśarīrā gatā svargaṅ bhartāramanuvartinī.

kauśikī paramōdārā pravṛttā ca mahānadī৷৷1.34.8৷৷


bhartāram her husband, anuvartinī following, saśarīrā with human body, svargam heaven, gatā had gone, paramōdārā highly generous, kauśikī named Kausiki, mahānadī sacred river, pravṛttā ca flowed.

Following her husband my highly generous sister reached heaven with her human body and down assuming the form of a sacred river, flowed Kausiki.
divyā puṇyōdakā ramyā himavantamupāśritā.

lōkasya hitakāmārthaṅ pravṛttā bhaginī mama৷৷1.34.9৷৷


lōkasya for the world, hitakāmārtham for the welfare and pleasure, pravṛttā flowed, divyā divine, puṇyōdakā sacred waters, ramyā beautiful, mama my, bhaginī sister, himavantam Himavat mountain, upāśritā took asylum.

Conferring the benefit of the other world and worldly pleasures on men my sister Kausiki who is divine and beautiful having sacred waters took resort in Himavat mountain and started flowing from there.
tatō.haṅ himavatpārśvē vasāmi niratassukham.

bhaginyāṅ snēhasaṅyukta: kauśikyāṅ raghunandana৷৷1.34.10৷৷


raghunandana O! Rama, tata: then onwards, bhaginyām in my sister, kauśikyām in Kausiki, snēhasaṅyukta: possessed of affection, aham I, nirata: enjoying, himavatpārśvē on the side of Himavat mountain, sukham happily, vasāmi I am living.

O son of the Raghus', from then onwards with affection towards my sister Kausiki, I am living happily in the vicinity of Himavat mountains.
sā tu satyavatī puṇyā satyē dharmē pratiṣṭhitā.

pativratā mahābhāgā kauśikī saritāṅ varā৷৷1.34.11৷৷


sā satyavatī that Satyavati, puṇyā sacred, satyē in truth, dharmē in righteousness, pratiṣṭhitā established, pativratā chaste, mahābhāgā holy, saritāṅ varā best among rivers, kauśikī Kausiki.

Satyavati is sacred, firmly established in truth and righteousness. She is chaste holy and best among rivers. She is known as river Kausiki.
ahaṅ hi niyamādrāma! hitvā tāṅ samupāgata:.

siddhāśramamanuprāpya siddhō.smi tava tējasā৷৷1.34.12৷৷


rāma Rama, aham hi I indeed, niyamāt for religious observance, tāṅ hitvā leaving her, samupāgata: have come, siddhāśramam Siddha ashrama, anuprāpya having reached, tava by your, tējasā valour, siddha: asmi I have fulfilled my desire.

Rama, for the sake of observance of austerity I have come to Siddhaashrama leaving her behind. Having reached here, I have fulfilled my desire through your valour.
ēṣā rāma! mamōtpattissvasya vaṅśasya kīrtitā.

dēśasya ca mahābāhō! yanmāṅ tvaṅ paripṛcchasi৷৷1.34.13৷৷


mahābāhō O! Mighty armed one, rāma O! Rama, ēṣā mama this is my, svasya vaṅśasya my family's, dēśasya ca of the place also, utpatti: origin, kīrtitā narrated, yat which, tvam you, mām me, paripṛcchasi are asking for.

O mighty-armed Rama! since you asked me I narrated this, my origin, the history of my family and the history of this place.
gatō.rdharātra: kākutstha! kathā: kathayatō mama.

nidrāmabhyēhi bhadraṅ tē mā bhūdvighnō.dhvanīha na:৷৷1.34.14৷৷


kākutstha O! Rama, mama for me, kathā: stories, kathayata: while narrating, ardharātra: midnight, gata: has passed by, nidrām sleep, abhyēhi acquire, tē bhadram prosperity to you, iha here, na: for us, adhvani on the way, vighna: obstacles, mābhūt let not take place.

O son of the Kakusthas! while telling my stories, midnight has passed by. Go to sleep now. Prosperity to you. Let there be no obstacles on our way.
niṣpandāstaravassarvē nilīnamṛgapakṣiṇa:.

naiśēna tamasā vyāptā diśaśca raghunandana৷৷1.34.15৷৷


raghunandana O! Rama, sarvē tarava: all trees, niṣpandā: are motionless, nilīna mṛgapakṣiṇa: with beasts and birds resting calmed, diśaśca all directions, naiśēna relating to night, tamasā with the darkness, vyāptā: pervaded.

O son of the Raghus'! the trees stand motionless, with the beasts and birds calm, all directions are pervaded with darkness.
śanairviyujyatē sandhyā nabhō nētrairivāvṛtam .

nakṣatratārāgahanaṅ jyōtirbhiriva bhāsatē৷৷1.34.16৷৷


sandhyā evening time, śanai: gradually, viyujyatē is separated, nakṣatratārāgahanam filled with stars and planets, nabha: sky, jyōtirbhi: iva as if with shining stars, nētrai: eyes, āvṛtam iva like covered, bhāsatē is shining.

Evening has gradually disappeared. The sky is littered with stars and planets gleaming points of light as though they are the eyes of the skies.
uttiṣṭhati ca śītāṅśuśśaśī lōkatamōnuda:.

hlādayan prāṇināṅ lōkē manāṅsi prabhayā vibhō৷৷1.34.17৷৷


vibhō O! Rama, śītāṅśu: having cool rays, śaśi moon, lōkatamōnuda: dispelling the darkness of world, prabhayā with moon light, lōkē in this world, prāṇinām of the living beings, manāṅsi minds, hlādayan delighting, uttiṣṭhati is rising higher and higher.

O Lord! the Moon with his cool rays, dispelling the darkness of the earth and delighting the minds of all living beings in this world, is rising higher and higher.
naiśāni sarvabhūtāni pracaranti tatastata:.

yakṣarākṣasasaṅghāśca raudrāśca piśitāśanā:৷৷1.34.18৷৷


naiśāni nocturnal, sarvabhūtāni all living beings, yakṣarākṣasasaṅghāśca groups of yakshas and rakshasas, raudrā: dreadful, piśitāśanāśca eaters of human flesh, tatastata: here and there, pracaranti are moving.

All nocturnal creatures groups of yakshas and rakshasas and dreadful eaters of human flesh are moving here and there".
ēvamuktvā mahātējā virarāma mahāmuni:.

sādhu sādhviti taṅ sarvē ṛṣayō hyabhyapūjayan৷৷1.34.19৷৷


mahātējā: highly lustrous, mahāmuni: great ascetic, ēvam uktvā having spoken in this way, virarāma rested, sarvē munaya: all sages, sādhu sādhu iti well said, well said, thus, tam him, abhyapūjayan praised.

Having spoken thus the highly lustrous, great ascetic rested. All sages praised him,
saying, "well-said! well-said!"
kuśikānāmayaṅ vaṅśō mahān dharmaparassadā.

brahmōpamā mahātmāna: kuśavaṅśyā narōttamā:৷৷1.34.20৷৷


kuśikānām of those belonging to the family of Kusa, ayam vaṅśa: this is the dynasty, mahān venerable, sadā always, dharmapara: devoted to virtue, kuśavaṅśyā: belonging to Kusa dynasty, narōttamā: foremost of men, mahātmāna: highly revered, brahmōpamā: similar to god Brahma.

This is the family of the Kusas, venerable always devoted to dharma, foremost of men, great like Lord Brahma.
viśēṣēṇa bhavānēva viśvāmitrō mahāyaśā:.

kauśikī saritāṅ śrēṣṭhā kulōdyōtakarī tava৷৷1.34.21৷৷


mahāyaśā: highly illustrious, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, bhavānēva you, yourself, viśēṣēṇa especially (you are similar to Brahma), saritām among rivers, śrēṣṭhā the best, kauśikī Kausiki, tava your, kulōdyōtakarī brightening the image of your dynasty.

"Highly illustrious Viswamitra, you are similar to Brahma. Among the rivers, Kausiki is the best, refurbishing the image of your dynasty".
iti tairmuniśārdūlai: praśasta: kuśikātmaja: .

nidrāmupāgamacchrīmān astaṅgata ivāṅśumān৷৷1.34.22৷৷


iti In this way, tai: by them, muniśārdūlai: by the best of ascetics, praśasta: praised, śrīmān the auspicious one, kuśikātmaja: son of Kusika, śrīmān the lustrous, aṅśumān Sun, astagatamiva setting behind Asta mountains, nidrām sleep, upāgamat obtained.

In this way, adored by the best of ascetics, the auspicious son of Kusika, went to sleep like the lustrous Sun setting.
rāmō.pi sahasaumitri: kiñcidāgatavismaya:.

praśasya muniśārdūlaṅ nidrāṅ samupasēvatē৷৷1.34.23৷৷


saha saumitri: along with Lakshmana, rāmō.pi Rama also, kiñcit little, āgatavismaya: with surprise, muniśārdūlam to the best of ascetics, praśasya praising, nidrām sleep, samupasēvatē enjoyed.

Rama as well as Lakshmana, with a sense of wonder went to sleep full of admiration for the great ascetic.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍēṇḍē catustriṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfourth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
