[Viswamitra narrates the legend of sacred Ganga]

upāsya rātriśēṣaṅ tu śōṇākūlē maharṣibhi:.

niśāyāṅ suprabhātāyāṅ viśvāmitrō.bhyabhāṣata৷৷1.35.1৷৷


viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, rātriśēṣam rest of the night, maharṣibhi: with ascetics, śōṇākūlē on the bank of river Sona, upāsya waiting, niśāyām in the night, suprabhātāyām at dawn, abhyabhāṣata said.

Viswamitra lay on the bank of Sona with the ascetics, for the rest of the night. (Getting up) at daybreak he said:
suprabhātā niśā rāma! pūrvā sandhyā pravartatē.

uttiṣṭhōttiṣṭha bhadraṅ tē! gamanāyābhirōcaya ৷৷1.35.2৷৷


rāma Rama, niśā night, suprabhātā has gradually turned into a good dawn, pūrvā sandhyā time for early morning devotions, pravartatē is commencing, uttiṣṭha arise, uttiṣṭha arise, tē bhadram prosperity to you, gamanāya for journey, abhirōcaya be inclined.

"Rama, the night makes way for the dawn. It is time for morning rituals. Arise, arise! May the day bring good news! Get ready for the onward journey".
tacchrutvā vacanaṅ tasya kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīṅ kriyām .

gamanaṅ rōcayāmāsa vākyaṅ cēdamuvāca ha৷৷1.35.3৷৷


tasya his, tadvacanam those words, śrutvā having heard, paurvāhṇikīm relating to forenoon, kriyām oblations, kṛtvā having made, gamanam to undertake journey, rōcayāmāsa inclined, idam this, vākyaṅ ca word also, uvāca ha spoke.

On hearing his words Rama performed morning oblations and getting ready for the
onward journey spoke:
ayaṅ śōṇaśśubhajalō.gādha: pulinamaṇḍita:.

katarēṇa pathā brahman! santariṣyāmahē vayam৷৷1.35.4৷৷


brahman O! Knower of god, śubhajala: having auspicious waters, pulinamaṇḍita: adorned with sand-banks, ayam this, śōṇa: Sona river, agādha: is deep, vayam we, katarēṇa by which, pathā way, santariṣyāmahē traverse.

"O knower of Brahman! Clean waters of this river are adorned with sand-banks. This Sona is deep. Which way shall we cross this river?
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa viśvāmitrō.bravīdidam .

ēṣa panthā mayōddiṣṭō yēna yānti maharṣaya:৷৷1.35.5৷৷


rāmēṇa By Rama, ēvam thus, ukta: having been addressed, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, idam these words, abravīt spoke, maharṣaya: ascetics, yēna by which way, yānti are going, ēṣa: this, panthā: way, mayā by me, uddiṣṭa: determined.

Having been addressed by Rama thus Viswamitra said, "We shall take the way the ascetics have gone before".
ēvamuktā maharṣayō viśvāmitrēṇa dhīmatā.

paśyantastē prayātā vai vanāni vividhāni ca৷৷1.35.6৷৷


dhīmatā by the wise, viśvāmitrēṇa by Visvamitra, ēvam thus, uktā: spoken, tē maharṣaya: those ascetics, vividhāni various, vanāni woods, paśyanta: seeing, prayātā: journeyed onwards.

With these words of the wise Viswamitra the ascetics moved forward surveying various forests.
tē gatvā dūramadhvānaṅ gatē.rdhadivasē tadā.

jāhnavīṅ saritāṅ śrēṣṭhāṅ dadṛśurmunisēvitām৷৷1.35.7৷৷


tē they, dūram distant, adhvānam way, gatvā having gone, tadā then, ardhadivasē in a half-day, gatē having passed, munisēvitām worshipped by ascetics, saritām among rivers, śrēṣṭhām the best, jāhnavīm river Jahnavi, dadṛśu: saw.

After travelling a long distance for half a day, they saw Jahnavi, the best among rivers haunted or worshipped by ascetics.
tāṅ dṛṣṭvā puṇyasalilāṅ haṅsasārasasēvitām.

babhūvurmuditā ssarvē munayassaha rāghavā:৷৷1.35.8৷৷


puṇyasalilām having sacred waters, haṅsasārasasēvitām attended by swans and cranes, tām dṛṣṭvā having seen that (river Ganga), saharāghavā: along with Rama and Lakshmana, sarvē munaya: all the sages, muditā: babhūvu: were delighted.

On seeing the river Ganga with swans and cranes floating on the surface of the sacred waters, all the sages including the sons of the Raghus (Rama and Lakshmana) were delighted.
tasyāstīrē tataścakrusta āvāsaparigraham.

tatassnātvā yathānyāyaṅ santarpya pitṛdēvatā:৷৷1.35.9৷৷

hutvā caivāgnihōtrāṇi prāśya cāmṛtavaddhavi: .

viviśurjāhnavītīrē śucau muditamānasā:৷৷1.35.10৷৷

viśvāmitraṅ mahātmānaṅ parivārya samantata:.


tata: then, tē they, tasyā: river's, tīrē on the bank, āvāsaparigraham adopting as habitation, cakru: made, tata: then, snātvā having bathed, yathānyāyam as per tradition, pitṛdēvatā: the ancestors, santarpya having satisfied by offering waters, agnihōtrāṇi hutvā after lighting their sacrificial fires, amṛtavat like nectar, havi: having oblations (offerings), prāśya partaking, muditamānasā: with joyful hearts, mahātmānam the illustrious, viśvāmitram Viswamitra, samantata: on all sides, parivārya surrounding, śucau in a sacred, jāhnavītīrē bank of river Jahnavi, viviśu: entered.

The birds had made the bank of the river their home. They (Rama and Lakshmana) took a dip and offered traditional oblations to ancestors. Thereafter they lighted the sacrificial fire and made customary offerings to the fire and partook of the nectar-like remains. With cheerful hearts they stood round the illustrious Viswamitra and entered the sacred bank of Jahnavi.
atha tatra tadā rāmō viśvāmitramathābravīt৷৷1.35.11৷৷

bhagavan! śrōtumicchāmi gaṅgāṅ tripathagāṅ nadīm.

trailōkyaṅ kathamākramya gatā nadanadīpatim৷৷1.35.12৷৷


atha then, rāma: Rama, tadā then, tatra there, viśvāmitram addressing Visvamitra, abravīt spoke, bhagavan O! Venerable one, tripathagām flowing in three directions, gaṅgāṅ nadīm about river Ganga, śrōtum to listen, icchāmi I am desirous,trailōkyam three worlds, ākramya occupying, nadanadīpatim the sea, the lord of all the rivers, katham how, gatā reached.

Then Rama said to Viswamitra "O venerable one! I wish to know why Ganga flowing in three directions, occupy (purified) the three worlds before entering the sea, the lord of rivers?"
cōditō rāmavākyēna viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:.

vṛddhiṅ janma ca gaṅgāyā vaktumēvōpacakramē৷৷1.35.13৷৷


rāmavākyēna by Rama's words, cōdita: prompted, viśvāmitra: mahāmuni: maharshi Visvamitra, gaṅgāyā: river Ganga's, janma birth, vṛddhiṅ ca progress, vaktum to tell, upacakramē commenced.

Prompted by Rama's words, maharshi Viswamitra started narrating the account of the birth and progress of river Ganga.
śailēndrō himavānnāma dhātūnāmākarō mahān.

tasya kanyādvayaṅ rāma rūpēṇāpratimaṅ bhuvi৷৷1.35.14৷৷


rāma Rama, dhātūnām for ores, mahān great, ākara: treasure-trove, himavannāma named Himavn, śailēndra: king of mountains, tasya for him, rūpēṇa in loveliness, bhuvi in this earth, apratimam unrivalled, kanyādvayam two daughters.

"O Rama! the great mountain named Himavan is a treasure-trove of ores. He is the king of mountains. He had two daughters, unrivalled in beauty in this world.
yā mēruduhitā rāma! tayōrmātā sumadhyamā.

nāmnā manōramā nāma patnī himavata: priyā৷৷1.35.15৷৷


rāma O! Rama, nāmnā by name, manōramā nāma well -known as Manorama, yā sumadhyamā she of beautiful waist, mēruduhitā daughter of mount Meru, himavata: Himavat's, priyā beloved, patnī wife, tayō: for both them, mātā mother.

O Rama! Himavan's beloved of beautiful waist, well-known by the name of Manorama is the daughter of Mount Meru. She is the mother to both the daughters.
tasyāṅ gaṅgēyamabhavajjyēṣṭhā himavatassutā.

umā nāma dvitīyābhūnnāmnā tasyaiva rāghava৷৷1.35.16৷৷


rāghava Rama, iyam gaṅgā this Ganga, himavata: Himavat's, jyēṣṭhā eldest, sutā daughter, tasyām abhavat born to her, tasyaiva for him only, nāmnā by name, umā nāma well-known as Uma, dvitīyā abhūt a second daughter was born.

O son of the Raghus! this Ganga was born to Manorama as Himavan's eldest daughter. A second one born to him was well-known by the name of Uma.
atha jyēṣṭhāṅ surāssarvē dēvatārthacikīrṣayā.

śailēndraṅ varayāmāsurgaṅgāṅ tripathagāṅ nadīm৷৷1.35.17৷৷


atha thereafter, sarvē surā: all devatas, dēvatārthacikīrṣayā desirous of fulfilling some purpose of devatas, tripathagām flowing in three directions, nadīm river, jyēṣṭhām eldest daughter, gaṅgāṅ Ganga, śailēndram king of mountains, varayāmāsu: proposed.

Thereupon all the devatas desirous of deriving some advantage proposed that the eldest daughter of the king of mountains, Ganga, flowing in three directions be given to them.
dadau dharmēṇa himavān tanayāṅ lōkapāvanīm.

svacchandapathagāṅ gaṅgāṅ trailōkyahitakāmyayā৷৷1.35.18৷৷


himavān Himavan, dharmēṇa having followed his duty, trailōkyahitakāmyayā intent on doing welfare for three worlds, lōkapāvanīm sanctifying whole world, svacchandapathagām flowing at her free will, tanayām daughter, gaṅgām Ganga, dadau gave.

In order to do good to the three worlds Himavan, rooted in dharma gifted his eldest daughter Ganga who sanctifies the whole world by flowing at her free will৷৷
pratigṛhya tatō dēvāstrilōkahitakāriṇa:.

gaṅgāmādāya tē.gacchan kṛtārthēnāntarātmanā৷৷1.35.19৷৷


tata: then, tē dēvā: those devatas, trilōkahitakāriṇa: doing good for the three worlds, gaṅgām Ganga, pratigṛhya having received, ādāya taking her, kṛtārthēna with a sense of fulfillment, antarātmanā with the mind, agacchan had gone.

The devatas having received Ganga committed to the welfare of the three worlds went back to their abodes with a sense of fulfilment in their mind.
yā cānyā śailaduhitā kanyāsīdraghunandana!.

ugraṅ sā vratamāsthāya tapastēpē tapōdhanā৷৷1.35.20৷৷


raghunandana O! Delight of Raghus, Rama, anyā the other, śailaduhitā daughter of the mountain (Himavan), yā kanyā āsīt that maiden lived, sā tapōdhanā that maiden with asceticism as her wealth, ugram severe, vratam vow, āsthāya adopting, tapa: austerities, tēpē observed.

O Delight of the Raghus! The other daughter of the mountain Himavan was a maiden whose wealth was tapas. She pursued a vow and observed severe austerities.
ugrēṇa tapasā yuktāṅ dadau śailavarassutām.

rudrāyāpratirūpāya umāṅ lōkanamaskṛtām৷৷1.35.21৷৷


śailavara: the best of Mountains, (Himavan), ugrēṇa with severe, tapasā austerities, yuktām endowed with, lōkanamaskṛtām venerated by the whole world, sutām daughter, umām Uma, apratirūpāya unrivalled, rudrāya for Rudra, dadau gave.

Himavan the best of mountains gave his daughter Uma associated with severe
austerities and venerated by the whole world in marriage to the unrivalled Rudra.
ētē tē śailarājasya sutē lōkanamaskṛtē.

gaṅgā ca saritāṅ śrēṣṭhā umādēvī ca rāghava৷৷1.35.22৷৷


rāghava O! Rama, saritām among rivers, śrēṣṭhā excellent, gaṅgā Ganga, umādēvī ca Uma devi, ētē both of them, śailarājasya king of Mountains, Himavan's, lōkanamaskṛtē worshipped by the world, tē both, sutē daughters.

O son of the Raghus! Ganga, the holiest of rivers and Uma devi are two daughters of the king of the mountains, (Himavan). They are worshipped by the entire world.
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṅ yathā tripathagā nadī.

khaṅ gatā prathamaṅ tāta gatiṅ gatimatāṅ vara ৷৷1.35.23৷৷


gatimatām among those having marvellous gait, vara best, tāta O! Child, tripathagā nadī three-way flowing river, prathamam firstly, yathā as, kham gatā reached the sky, ētat sarvam all this, ākhyātam is communicated to you.

O child with a marvellous gait! I have related to you about Ganga flowing across the three worlds, Ganga who reached the heaven first and all that.
saiṣā suranadī ramyā śailēndrasya sutā tadā.

suralōkaṅ samārūḍhā vipāpā jalavāhinī৷৷1.35.24৷৷


ramyā beautiful, vipāpā without sins, jalavāhinī flowing with water, sā ēṣā the same, śailēndrasya Himavan's, sutā daughter, tadā then, suranadī divine river, suralōkam heavens, samārūḍhā ascended.

The divine Ganga, daughter of Himavan, beautiful and sinless, carrying a large volume of water ascended the heavens".
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē pañcatriṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
