[The devatas create obstacles to the marital bliss of Maheswara and Parvati--Goddess Parvati curses the devatas and the mother earth.]

uktavākyē munau tasminnubhau rāghavalakṣmaṇau.

pratinandya kathāṅ vīrāvūcaturmunipuṅgavam৷৷1.36.1৷৷


tasmin munau when that ascetic, uktavākyē had spoken the words, vīrau two heroes, rāghavalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ubhau both, kathām story, pratinandya enjoying, munipuṅgavam pre-eminent ascetic, ūcatu: uttered.

While Viswamitra pre-eminent ascetic among the sages was telling the story (of Ganga) to the heroic Rama and Lakshmana, they extolled it and enquired:
dharmayuktamidaṅ brahman! kathitaṅ paramaṅ tvayā .

duhituśśailarājasya jyēṣṭhāyā vaktumarhasi৷৷1.36.2৷৷

vistaraṅ vistarajñō.si divyamānuṣasambhavam.


brahman O! Divine sage, dharmayuktam endowed with righteousness, paramam supreme, idam this story, tvayā by you, kathitam has been narrated, śailarājasya king of mountains Himavan's, jyēṣṭhāyā: of the eldest, duhitu: daughter's, divyamānuṣasambhavam happened in the celestial and mortal world, vistaram detailed story, vaktum to tell, arhasi it is worthy of you, vistarajña: asi you are conversant with the details.

"O Brahman! sage, this excellent story set in righteousness has been narrated by you.
Since you are conversant with the details, you can befittingly tell the story in detail, pertaining to the eldest daughter of king of the mountains and the events that happened in the celestial and mortal worlds
trīn pathō hētunā kēna plāvayēllōkapāvanī৷৷1.36.3৷৷

kathaṅ gaṅgā tripathagā viśrutā sariduttamā.

triṣu lōkēṣu dharmajña! karmabhi: kaissamanvitā৷৷1.36.4৷৷


lōkapāvanī purifying the worlds, kēna hētunā for what reason, trīn three, patha: paths, plāvayēt should be over-flowing with waters? dharmajña O! Knower of righteousness, tripathagā Tripathaga (three-way flowing), gaṅgā Ganga, kai: by which, karmabhi: actions, anvitā endowed with, triṣu lōkēṣu in three worlds, sariduttamā excellent among rivers, viśrutā well known.

Why does Ganga, the purifier of the worlds overflow the three paths (worlds)? O knower of dharma what deed made, Tripathaga (flowing in three directions) Ganga well-known in the three worlds as the best (holiest) of all rivers"?
tathā bruvati kākutsthē viśvāmitrastapōdhana:.

nikhilēna kathāṅ sarvāmṛṣimadhyē nyavēdayat৷৷1.36.5৷৷


kākutsthē when Rama, tathā bruvati was thus speaking, tapōdhana: sage with asceticism as his wealth, sarvām entire, kathām story, nikhilēna completely, ṛṣimadhyē amidst sages, nyavēdayat revealed.

Having heard the words of the son of the Kakusthas, Viswamitra, vested with the wealth of asceticism, revealed the complete story in detail in the presence of the sages.
purā rāma! kṛtōdvāhō nīlakaṇṭhō mahātapā:.

dṛṣṭvā ca spṛhayā dēvīṅ maithunāyōpacakramē৷৷1.36.6৷৷


rāma O! Rama, purā in ancient times, kṛtōdvāha: got married, mahātapā: mighty ascetic, nīlakaṇṭha: lord Siva, dēvīm goddess, Uma, dṛṣṭvā having seen, spṛhayā with intense desire, maithunāya for enjoying marital bliss, upacakramē commenced.

"O Rama, in ancient times, great ascetic the blue-neck Lord Siva got married to goddess Uma charmed with her beauty he indulged in sexual enjoyment with intense
passion.
śitikaṇṭhasya dēvasya divyaṅ varṣaśataṅ gatam.

na cāpi tanayō rāma! tasyāmāsīt parantapa!৷৷1.36.7৷৷


parantapa O! Tormentor of enemies, rāma O! Rama, dēvasya of the lord, śitikaṇṭhasya Siva's, divyam celestial, varṣaśatam hundred years, gatam was over, api ca even then, tasyām in her (the womb of goddess Parvati), tanaya: son, na āsīt was not born.

O Rama, tormentor of enemies, while Lord Siva was thus absorbed in sexual enjoyment, a hundred (celestial) years passed but no son was born to them.
tatō dēvāssamudvignā: pitāmahapurōgamā:.

yadihōtpadyatē bhūtaṅ kastatpratisahiṣyatē৷৷1.36.8৷৷


tata: then, pitāmahapurōgamā: with Brahma in the forefront, dēvā: devatas, iha here, now in this goddess, yat which, bhūtam offspring, utpadyatē will be born, tat that, ka: who, pratisahiṣyatē will be able to bear, samudvignā: were exceedingly alarmed.

"Then the devatas led by Brahma were exceedingly alarmed. 'Who will be able to bear the power of the offspring if it is born here and now', they reflected.
abhigamya surāssarvē praṇipatyēdamabruvan.

dēva dēva mahādēva lōkasyāsya hitē rata ৷৷1.36.9৷৷

surāṇāṅ praṇipātēna prasādaṅ kartumarhasi.


surā: devatas, sarvē all, abhigamya approaching Siva, praṇipatya paying obeisance, idam these words, abruvan spoke, dēvadēva O! God of devatas, asya lōkasya for this world, hitē rata engaged in doing welfare of all, mahādēva O! Mahadeva, surāṇām for celestials, praṇipātēna with salutations, prasādam mercy, kartum arhasi capable of doing it.

All devatas approached Siva and paying their obeisance said, "O God of the gods engaged in the welfare of all! O Mahadeva! accept our salutations! Be king which you can be (if you will)".
na lōkā dhārayiṣyanti tava tējassurōttama ৷৷1.36.10৷৷

brāhmēṇa tapasā yuktō dēvyā saha tapaścara.

trailōkyahitakāmārthaṅ tējastējasi dhāraya ৷৷1.36.11৷৷


surōttama O! Best among gods, tava your, tēja: energy, lōkā: worlds, na dhārayiṣyanti cannot contain, brāhmēṇa in conformity vedas, tapasā by yogic penance, yukta: endowed with, dēvyā saha in the company with Parvati, tapa: austerities, cara engage yourself, trailōkyahitakāmārtham with the intention of doing welfare for three worlds, tēja: energy, tējasi in your energy, dhāraya retain.

"O best among the gods, the worlds cannot contain your energy (the son born of your energy) You may engage yourself in penance in the company of Uma in conformity with the Vedas. Retain your energy in your body for the welfare of the three worlds."
dēvatānāṅ vacaśśrutvā sarvalōkamahēśvara:.

bāḍhamityabravītsarvānpunaścaivamuvāca ha ৷৷1.36.12৷৷


sarvalōkamahēśvara: ruler of all the worlds, dēvatānām devata's, vaca: words, śrutvā having heard, bāḍham "Be it so", iti thus, abravīt said, punaśca again, ēvam these words, uvāca ha spoke.

Mahadeva, ruler of the all the worlds, having heard the words of devatas, said "Be it so" Further:
dhārayiṣyāmyahaṅ tējastējasyēva sahōmayā.

tridaśā: pṛthivī caiva nirvāṇamadhigacchatu৷৷1.36.13৷৷


umayā saha together with Uma, aham I, tēja: vital fluid, tējasyēva in my energy (body), dhārayiṣyāmi I shall preserve, tridaśā: devatas, pṛthivī caiva earth also, nirvāṇam peace, adhigacchatu obtain.
"
"Together with Uma I will preserve the semen in my body thereby the devatas and also the earth will have peace.
yadidaṅ kṣubhitaṅ sthānānmama tējō hyanuttamam.

dhārayiṣyati kastanmē bruvantu surasattamā:৷৷1.36.14৷৷


mama my , anuttamam excellent, yat idam tēja: if this vital fluid, sthānāt from its own place, kṣubhitam is shaken, tat then, ka: who, dhārayiṣyati will contain? surasattamā: best of devatas, mē to me, bruvantu tell.

"Who will contain this exceptional vital fluid of mine if shaken from its own place? O best of devatas! tell me".
ēvamuktāssurāssarvē pratyūcurvṛṣabhadhvajam.

yattēja: kṣubhitaṅ hyētattaddharā dhārayiṣyati৷৷1.36.15৷৷


ēvam uktā: having been addressed in this way by Iswara, surā: sarvē all devatas, vṛṣabhadhvajam having flagstaff with bull as his symbol (Iswara), pratyūcu: replied, yat tēja: that vital fluid, kṣubhitam disturbed, ētat thist one, dharā earth, dhārayiṣyati will contain.

Thus questioned, all the devatas replied to the bearer of the flag with bull as its symbol (Siva), saying, "The earth will contain the disturbed vital fluid".
ēvamuktassurapati: pramumōca mahītalē.

tējasā pṛthivī yēna vyāptā sagirikānanā৷৷1.36.16৷৷


ēvam ukta: having been spoken in this way by devatas, surapati: lord of devatas, yēna tējasā by which vital fluid, sagirikānanā including mountains, forests, pṛthivī earth, vyāptā was pervaded, mahītalē on the earth, pramumōca released.

Thus replied by the devatas, the god of the gods released his vital fluid on earth. It
pervaded the entire earth including mountains and forests.
tatō dēvā: punaridamūcuścātha hutāśanam.

praviśa tvaṅ mahātējō raudraṅ vāyusamanvita:৷৷1.36.17৷৷


tata: then, atha thereafter, dēvā: devatas, puna: again, hutāśanam fire deity, idam these words, ūcu: spoke, tvam you, vāyusamanvita: followed by wind god, raudram relating to Rudra, mahātēja: mighty energy (creative power), praviśa enter.

Then, the devatas said to the fire-god, "Enter this energy (creative power) related to Rudra followed by the wind-god".
tadagninā punarvyāptaṅ sañjātaśśvētaparvata:.

divyaṅ śaravaṇaṅ caiva pāvakādityasannibham৷৷1.36.18৷৷

yatra jātō mahātējā: kārtikēyō.gnisambhava:.


agninā by fire, vyāptam pervaded, tat that energy, puna: again, śvētaparvata: celestial white mountain, sañjāta: became, pāvakādityasannibham resplendent as fire or Sun, divyam celestial, śaravaṇaṅ caiva became forest of reeds, yatra in which, mahātējā: glorious, agnisambhava: born from fire, kārtikēya: son of Krittika, Kartikeya, jāta: was born.

That energy pervaded by fire was transformed into the White Mountain. It turned the forest of reeds (Saravana) (blazing) like the fire or the Sun. From that fire was born the glorious Kartikeya.
athōmāṅ ca śivaṅ caiva dēvāssarṣigaṇāstadā.

pūjayāmāsuratyarthaṅ suprītamanasastata:৷৷1.36.19৷৷


atha thereafter, sarṣigaṇā: with multitude of saints, dēvā: devatas, tata: for that event, suprītamanasa: with highly pleased minds, tadā then, umāṅ ca goddess Uma, śivaṅ caiva Shiva, atyartham with great desire, pūjayāmāsu: worshipped.

Thereafter highly pleased with the event the devatas along with the saints worshipped Siva and goddess Uma with deep devotion.
atha śailasutā rāma! tridaśānidamabravīt.

samanyuraśapatsarvān krōdhasaṅraktalōcanā৷৷1.36.20৷৷


rāma Rama!, atha thereafter, śailasutā daughter of mountain Himavan, samanyu: with anger, tridaśān addressing devatas, idam these words, abravīt spoke, krōdhasaṅraktalōcanā with reddened eyes because of anger, sarvān all of them, aśapat cursed.

"Rama! thereafter Uma, daughter of the mountain (Himavan) with her eyes red with anger cursed all of them:
yasmānnivāritā caiva saṅgati: putrakāmyayā.

apatyaṅ svēṣu dārēṣu tasmānnōtpādayiṣyatha৷৷1.36.21৷৷


yasmāt for the reason, putrakāmyayā with a desire to bear son, saṅgati: union with Mahadeva, nivāritā is prevented, tasmāt for that reason, svēṣu in your, dārēṣu wives, apatyam progeny, nōtpādayiṣyatha you will not produce.

adyaprabhṛti yuṣmākamaprajāssantu patnaya:৷৷1.36.22৷৷

ēvamuktvāsurān sarvān śaśāpa pṛthivīmapi.


adyaprabhṛti from today onwards, yuṣmākam your, patnaya: wives, aprajā: childless, santu may become, sarvān all, surān devatas, ēvam in this way, uttvā having spoken, pṛthivīmapi Earth also, śaśāpa cursed.

"From today onwards your wives will become childless" cursed Uma. The devatas
were cursed this Even the earth:
avanē naikarūpā tvaṅ bahubhāryā bhaviṣyasi৷৷1.36.23৷৷

na ca putrakṛtāṅ prītiṅ matkrōdhakaluṣīkṛtā .

prāpsyasi tvaṅ sudurmēdhē mama putramanicchatī৷৷1.36.24৷৷


avanē O! Earth, tvam you, naikarūpā do not assume one single form, bahubhāryā as wife of many masters, bhaviṣyasi you will become, sudurmēdhē O evil minded one, mama for me, putram son, anicchatī is not to your liking, tvam you, matkrōdhakaluṣīkṛtā fouled as as result of my anger, putrakṛtām on account of a son, prītiṅ ca pleasure also, na prāpsyasi you will not obtain.

"O Earth! you will assume many forms and become wife of many masters. O evil-minded one, you did not want me to bear a son. Having been fouled as a result of my anger, you will not have the pleasure of having a son, cursed Uma.
tān sarvān vrīḍitān dṛṣṭvā surānsurapatistadā.

gamanāyōpacakrāma diśaṅ varuṇapālitām৷৷1.36.25৷৷


surapati: Mahesvara, tadā then, vrīḍitān filled with humility, tān sarvān all those, surān devatas, dṛṣṭvā having seen, varuṇapālitām presided over by Varuna (Western direction), diśam direction, gamanāya to depart, upacakrāma commenced.

"The god of the gods (Mahesvara), seeing all the devatas humiliated began to depart in the westerly direction presided over by Varuna.
sa gatvā tapa ātiṣṭhatpārśvē tasyōttarē girau.

himavatprabhavē śṛṅgē saha dēvyā mahēśvara:৷৷1.36.26৷৷


mahēśvara: Mahesvara, girau gatvā having gone to the (himavat) mountain, tasya (girēḥ) of that Himavat mountain's, uttarē in the northern, pārśvē side, himavatprabhavē born in the Himavat mountain, śṛṅgē on a peak, dēvyā saha along with goddess Uma, tapa: yogic practices, atiṣṭhat performed.

"Mahesvara along with goddess Uma, went north of the Himavat mountain and performed penance on a peak.
ēṣa tē vistarō rāma śailaputryā nivēdita:.

gaṅgāyā: prabhavaṅ caiva śṛṇu mē sahalakṣmaṇa:৷৷1.36.27৷৷


rāma O! Rama, śailaputryā: relating to the daughter of Himavat mountain, Uma, ēṣa: vistara: this extensive story, tē to you, (kathita: has been narrated), gaṅgāyā: ca relating to Ganga, prabhavam her birth, nivēdita: described, saha lakṣmaṇa: together with Lakshmana, śruṇu listen.

"O Rama! this story of the daughter of the mountain has been narrated to you. Now listen with Lakshmana the tale of the birth of Ganga":
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ṣaṭtriṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysixth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
