[Birth of Karttikeya.]

tapyamānē tapō dēvē dēvā: sarṣigaṇā: purā.

sēnāpatimabhīpsanta: pitāmahamupāgaman৷৷1.37.1৷৷


purā in the olden days, dēvē when Iswara, tapa: tapyamānē engaged in austerities, sarṣigaṇā: together with ascetics, dēvā: devatas, sēnāpatim army general, abhīpsanta: desirous of obtaining, pitāmaham lord Brahma, upāgaman approached.

In olden days when Iswara was engaged in austerities, the devatas together with the ascetics, approached Lord Brahma for an army general.
tatō.bruvan surāssarvē bhagavantaṅ pitāmaham.

praṇipatya surāssarvē sēndrāssāgnipurōgamā:৷৷1.37.2৷৷


tata: then, sēndrā: along with Indra, agnipurōgamā: fire god in their forefront, surā: devatas, sarvē all, bhagavantam revered, pitāmaham lord Brahma, praṇipatya saluting with folded hands, abruvan spoke.

Then led by Indra and the Fire-god all devatas approached Lord Brahma, the grandsire saluted him (with folded hands) and spoke.
yō na ssēnāpatirdēva dattō bhagavatā purā.

tapa: paramamāsthāya tapyatē sma sahōmayā৷৷1.37.3৷৷


dēva O! lord, bhagavatā by the venerable one (you), purā formerly (at the time of creation), na: for us, ya: sēnāpati: that army general, datta: was given, umayā saha with Uma, paramam great, tapa: religious observance, āsthāya having adopted, tapyatē is practising austerities.

"O Lord! in ancient times your lordship gave us an army general (at the time of
creation). He is engrossed in great penance along with Uma .
yadatrānantaraṅ kāryaṅ lōkānāṅ hitakāmyayā.

saṅvidhatsva vidhānajña tvaṅ hi na: paramā gati:৷৷1.37.4৷৷


vidhānajña knower of the law and order, O! Grand-sire, lōkānām for the worlds, hitakāmyayā desiring welfare, atra in this matter, anantaram after this, yat kāryam whichever act, saṅvidhatsva you prescribe, tvam you, na: for us, paramā supreme, gati: hi verily our refuge.

"O Knower of law and order! O Grandsire! verily you are our supreme refuge committed to the welfare of the worlds. Tell us what we should do in this matter (now that we cannot procreate a general on account of Uma's curse)".
dēvatānāṅ vacaśśrutvā sarvalōkapitāmaha:.

sāntvayanmadhurairvākyaistridaśānidamabravīt৷৷1.37.5৷৷


sarvalōkapitāmaha: grand-sire of all the worlds, dēvatānām devatas, vaca: words, śrutvā having heard, madhurai: with sweet, vākyai: words, tridaśān devatas, sāntvayan consoling, idam these words, abravīt spoke.

Hearing the words of the devatas, Brahma, the Grandsire of all the worlds consoled the devatas with sweet words, saying:
śaila putryā yaduktaṅ tanna prajāsyatha patniṣu .

tasyā vacanamakliṣṭaṅ satyamētanna saṅśaya:৷৷1.37.6৷৷


yat whatever, śailaputryā by Uma devi, uktam has been said, tat that, patniṣu among your wives, prajāsyatha you will not bear progeny, tasyā: her, vacanam words, akliṣṭam infalliable, ētat this one, satyam certain,saṅśaya: na no doubt.

iyamākāśagā gaṅgā yasyāṅ putraṅ hutāśana:.

janayiṣyati dēvānāṅ sēnāpatimarindamam৷৷1.37.7৷৷


yasyām in this, hutāśana: fire god, arindamam destroyer of enemies,, dēvānām for devatas, sēnāpatim army general, putram son, janayiṣyati will beget, iyam such, ākāśagā flowing in the celestial regions, gaṅgā Ganga (exists).

"Ganga keeps flowing in the celestial regions. Through Ganga the Fire-god will beget a son who will be capable of destroying enemies. He will become the army general of the gods".
jyēṣṭhā śailēndraduhitā mānayiṣyati tatsutam.

umāyāstadbahumataṅ bhaviṣyati na saṅśaya:৷৷1.37.8৷৷


jyēṣṭhā eldest, śailēndraduhitā daughter of king of mountains, tatsutam that son of Agni, mānayiṣyati will accept, tat that one, umāyā: for Uma devi, bahumataṅ bhaviṣyati will be acceptable, saṅśaya: na no doubt.

"Ganga, the eldest daughter of the king of the mountains, will tend that son of Agni. This will be totally acceptable to Uma. No doubt".
tacchrutvā vacanaṅ tasya kṛtārthā raghunandana.

praṇipatya surāssarvē pitāmahamapūjayan৷৷1.37.9৷৷


raghunandana O! Rama, surā: sarvē all devatas, tasya Brahma's, tat that, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, kṛtārthā: successful in their mission, pitāmaham grand-sire, praṇipatya saluting with folded hands, apūjayan worshipped.

"O son of the Raghus! having heard Brahma's words all the devatas considered themselves successful in their mission. They saluted him with folded hands and offered their worship.
tē gatvā parvataṅ rāma! kailāsaṅ dhātumaṇḍitam.

agniṅ niyōjayāmāsu: putrārthaṅ sarvadēvatā:৷৷1.37.10৷৷


tē sarvadēvatā: all those devatas, dhātumaṇḍitam adorned with minerals, kailāsaṅ parvatam mount Kailasa, gatvā having gone, putrārtham for begetting a son, agnim fire-god, niyōjayāmāsu: appointed.

All the devatas, went to mount Kailasa, adorned with minerals, and urged the Fire-god for a son.
dēvakāryamidaṅ dēva! saṅvidhatsva hutāśana.

śailaputryāṅ mahātējō gaṅgāyāṅ tēja utsṛja৷৷1.37.11৷৷


dēva O! Lustrous, hutaśana O! fire deity, idam this, dēvakāryam divine wish, saṅvidhatsva accomplish, mahātēja: O! god of mighty energy, tēja: vital fluid of Ishwara, śailaputryām in that mountain king's daughter, gaṅgāyām Ganga, utsṛja release.

'O lustrous Fire-god, accomplish this divine work. O god, possessed of mighty energy, release the vital fluid of Iswara in Ganga, daughter of the king of mountains.
dēvatānāṅ pratijñāya gaṅgāmabhyētya pāvaka:.

garbhaṅ dhāraya vai dēvi! dēvatānāmidaṅ priyam৷৷1.37.12৷৷


pāvaka: fire deity, dēvatānām for devatas, pratijñāya promised, gaṅgām Ganga, abhyētya having approached, dēvi O! devi, garbham pregnancy, dhāraya vai bear, idam this, dēvatānām devatas', priyam desire.

"The Fire-god gave his consent. The devatas approached Ganga and said, 'O goddess! bear the energy of Siva (inyour world) since this cause is dear to the gods'.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā divyaṅ rūpamadhārayat.

dṛṣṭvā tanmahimānaṅ sa samantādavakīryata৷৷1.37.13৷৷


tasya that fire-god's, tadvacanam those words, śrutvā having heard, divyam divine, rūpam form, adhārayat assumed, sa: that fire-deity, tanmahimānam her greatness, dṛṣṭvā beholding, samantāt on all sides, avakīryata split over.

"Hearing the words of the Fire-god, Ganga assumed a divine form. Beholding her glory, the god of fire pervaded her from all sides.
samantatastadā dēvīmabhyaṣiñcata pāvaka:.

sarvasrōtāṅsi pūrṇāni gaṅgāyā raghunandana!৷৷1.37.14৷৷


raghunandana O! Rama, tadā then, pāvaka: fire-god, dēvīm Ganga devi, samantata: on all sides, abhyaṣiñcata discharged (sprinkled) the vital fluid of Ishwara preserved in his body, gaṅgāyā: Ganga's, sarvasrōtāṅsi all her streams, pūrṇāni were filled.

O Rama! then, the Fire-god discharged the vital fluid of Iswara, preserved in his body, which pervaded all sides of Ganga and all her streams were filled with (the fluid).
tamuvāca tatō gaṅgā sarvadēvapurōhitam.

aśaktā dhāraṇē dēva! tava tēja ssamuddhatam.

dahyamānāgninā tēna sampravyathitacētanā৷৷1.37.15৷৷


tata: then, gaṅgā Ganga, sarvadēvapurōhitam (Fire) who was standing ahead of all devatas, tam addressing the fire-deity, uvāca spoke, dēva O! God of fire, samuddhatam ever-increasing, tava your, tēja: splendour, dhāraṇē to hold, aśaktā incapable, tēna agninā by fire-deity (by that vital fluid), dahyamānā being burnt, sampravyathitacētanā I have greatly distressed consciousness.

Ganga addressing the Fire-god standing ahead of all the devatas said 'O god of fire, I am incapable of holding your ever-increasing splendour. The fiery fluid is burning me. My consciousness is overwhelmed'.
athābravīdidaṅ gaṅgāṅ sarvadēvahutāśana:.

iha haimavatī pādē garbhō.yaṅ sannivēśyatām৷৷1.37.16৷৷


atha thereafter, sarvadēvahutāśana: partaker of oblations offered to all gods, gaṅgām Ganga, idam these words, abravīt spoke, ayam this, garbha: embryo, iha here, haimavatī mountain Himavat, pādē slopes, sannivēśyatām may be placed.

Thereafter the Fire-god who is the partaker of oblations offered to all deities said to Ganga 'Place this embryo on this slope of Mountain Himavan'.
śrutvā tvagnivacō gaṅagā taṅ garbhamatibhāsvaram.

utsasarja mahātēja ssrōtōbhyō hi tadānagha !৷৷1.37.17৷৷


mahātēja: O! Highly glorious, anagha O! Sinless one, agnivaca: words of fire-god, śrutvā having heard, gaṅgā Ganga, tadā then, atibhāsvaram highly resplendent, tam garbham that embryo, srōtōbhya: towards streams of the river, utsasarja released.

"O glorious, sinless one, (Rama)! hearing the words of the Fire-god, Ganga then expelled that resplendent embryo from her streams.
yadasyā nirgataṅ tasmāttaptajāmbūnadaprabham .

kāñcanaṅ dharaṇīṅ prāptaṅ hiraṇyamamalaṅ śubham৷৷1.37.18৷৷


asyā: from this river Ganaga, taptajāmbūnadaprabham resembling the lustre of the molten gold, yat that embryo, nirgatam emerging out of her, dharaṇīm earth, prāptam having reached, tasmāt from it, śubham auspicious, kāñcanam bright, amalam pure, hiraṇyam gold (was produced).

The embryo that emerged from Ganga reached the earth. It resembled the lustre of molten gold. It furned into gold auspicious, bright and pure.
tāmraṅ kārṣṇāyasaṅ caiva taikṣṇyādēvābhyajāyata৷৷1.37.19৷৷

malaṅ tasyābhavattatra trapu sīsakamēva ca.

tadētaddharaṇīṅ prāpya nānādhāturavardhata৷৷1.37.20৷৷


tatra there, taikṣṇyāt from its severity, tāmram copper, kārṣṇāyasam caiva iron also, abhyajāyata were produced, tasya from that embryo, malam dirt, trapu zinc, sīsakamēva lead, abhavat born, tat ētat that vital fluid, dharaṇīm earth, prāpya having reached, nānādhātu: various minerals, avardhata developed.

There copper and iron were produced from its acidity, zinc and lead from its residue. Various minerals were formed when that embryo reached the earth.
nikṣiptamātrē garbhē tu tējōbhirabhirañjitam.

sarvaṅ parvatasannaddhaṅ sauvarṇamabhavadvanam৷৷1.37.21৷৷


garbhē when that embryo, nikṣiptamātrē had been just placed, sarvam all, parvatasannaddham sprouted on the mountain, vanam forest, tējōbhi: with lustre, abhirañjitam reddened, sauvarṇam abhavat rendered golden.

When the embryo was placed (in Ganga) it spread on all sides of the forest on the mountain. Irradiated with lustre the forest appeared golden.
jātarūpamiti khyātaṅ tadā prabhṛti rāghava.

suvarṇaṅ puruṣavyāghra hutāśanasamaprabham৷৷1.37.22৷৷

tṛṇavṛkṣalatāgulmaṅ sarvaṅ bhavati kāñcanam.


puruṣavyāghra O! Best among men, rāghava Rama, tadā prabhṛti then onwards, hutāśanasamaprabham effulgent like fire, suvarṇam gold, jātarūpam Jatarupa (born with a form), (iti) khyātam well-known as, sarvam all, tṛṇavṛkṣalatāgulmam with grass, shrubs, creepers and trees, kāñcanaṅ bhavati became gold.

O tiger among men, O scion of the Raghus! Then onwards gold which is effulgent like fire, became well-known as Jatarupa (pure form). The grass, shrubs, creepers and trees of that forest looked golden.
taṅ kumāraṅ tatō jātaṅ sēndrāssaha marudgaṇā:৷৷1.37.23৷৷

kṣīrasaṅbhāvanārthāya kṛttikāssamayōjan.


tata: thereafter, jātam born, taṅ kumāram that Kumara, sēndrā: together with Indra, marudgaṇā: groups of deities, saha together, kṣīrasaṅbhāvanārthāya with a view to suckle him as their own offspring, kṛttikā: six nymphs (stars) to act as nurses, samayōjan arranged.

Thereafter Kumara was born (out of Ganga's womb). The gods together with Indra arranged six nymphs (stars) to act as nurses to suckle Kumara as their own offspring.
tā: kṣīraṅ jātamātrasya kṛtvā samayamuttamam৷৷1.37.24৷৷

dadu: putrō.yamasmākaṅ sarvāsāmiti niścitā:.


tā: those Krittikas, niścitā: regarded within themselves, ayam this boy, asmākam sarvāsām for all of us, putra: son, uttamam great, samayam an agreement, kṛtvā having made, jātamātrasya just then born boy, kṣīram breast milk, dadu: gave.

Those krittikas, having decided among themselves and having made an agreement with the gods saying! 'This boy shall become a son to all of us' fed the new-born with their milk (breast milk).
tatastu dēvatā ssarvā: kārtikēya iti bruvan৷৷1.37.25৷৷

putrastrailōkyavikhyātō bhaviṣyati na saṅśaya:.4-


tata: thereafter, sarvā: all, dēvatā: devatas, putra: son, kārtikēya: iti as Karthikeya, son of Krittikas, trailōkyavikhyāta: renowned in three worlds, bhaviṣyati shall become, saṅśaya: na no doubt, iti bruvan thus spoke.

Thereafter, all the gods said, 'This son shall become renowned in the three worlds as Karttikeya, (son of krittikas). There is no doubt '.
tēṣāṅ tadvacanaṅ śrutvā skannaṅ garbhaparisravē৷৷1.37.26৷৷

snāpayan parayā lakṣmyā dīpyamānaṅ yathānalam.


tēṣām of those devatas', tat vacanam those words, śrutvā having heard, garbhaparisravē when the embryo was flowing from womb, skannam descended, analam yathā like fire, parayā with great, lakṣmyā beauty, dīpyamānam shining, snāpayan bathed.

Hearing the words of the gods, the krittikas bathed the baby that descended from the womb of Ganga resembling flaming fire and shining with great beauty.
skanda ityabruvan dēvā: skannaṅ garbhaparisravāt৷৷1.37.27৷৷

kārtikēyaṅ mahābhāgaṅ kākutstha! jvalanōpamam.


kākutstha! O! Rama, jvalanōpamam equal to flaming fire, mahābhāgam very fortunate, garbhaparisravāt embryo from womb, skannam descended, kārtikēyam Karthikeya, skanda: iti will be known as Skanda, dēvā: devatas, abruvan spoke.

O scion of the Kakusthas, Karttikeya lustrous like flaming fire, was very fortunate Descended from the womb of the Ganga, he is named Skanda by the gods.
prādurbhūtaṅ tata: kṣīraṅ kṛttikānāmanuttamam ৷৷1.37.28৷৷

ṣaṇṇāṅ ṣaḍānanō bhūtvā jagrāha stanajaṅ paya:.


tata: then, kṛttikānām of Krittikas, anuttamam very best, kṣīram milk, prādurbhūtam formed, ṣaṇṇām of six of them, stanajam coming from their breasts, paya: milk, ṣaḍānana: six faces Skanda, bhūtvā having assumed, jagrāha received.

Then excellent milk surged in the breasts of krittikas. Assuming six mouths, he sucked the milk.
gṛhītvā kṣīramēkāhnā sukumāravapustadā৷৷1.37.29৷৷

ajayatsvēna vīryēṇa daityasēnāgaṇān vibhu:.


vibhu: the capable boy, ēkāhnā for one day only, kṣīram milk, gṛhītvā having received, tadā then, sukumāravapu: with tender body, svēna vīryēṇa by his inborn prowess, daityasēnāgaṇān hosts of demons, ajayat vanquished.

Drinking milk just for a day and with a body still tender he could vanquish hosts of demons by his inborn prowess so capable be was!
surasēnāgaṇapatiṅ tatastamatuladyutim৷৷1.37.30৷৷

abhyaṣiñcan suragaṇā ssamētyāgnipurōgamā:.


tata: then, agnipurōgamā: with fire-god in the forefront, suragaṇā: devatas, samētya having assembled, atuladyutim a hero of unsurpassed effulgence, tam him, surasēnāgaṇapatim commander of devata forces, abhyaṣiñcan installed.

With the Fire-god in the forefront, all the gods assembled and installed Karttikeya, shining on unsurpassed brilliant, as commander of the gods forces.
ēṣa tē rāma gaṅgāyā vistarō.bhihitō mayā৷৷1.37.31৷৷

kumārasambhavaścaiva dhanya: puṇyastathaiva ca.


rāma O! Rama, mayā by me, tē to you,gaṅgāyā: Ganga's, ēṣa: this story, vistara: in detail, tathaiva and, dhanya: a fortunate being, puṇya: auspiciousness, kumārasambhavaścaiva birth of Kumara, abhihita: has been told.

"O Rama! this story of Ganga and that of the birth of Kumara, who was fortunate and auspicious, has been related to you in detail.
bhaktaśca ya: kārtikēyē kākutstha bhuvi mānavaḥ.

āyuṣmān putrapautraiśca skandasālōkyatāṅ vrajēt৷৷1.37.32৷৷


kākutstha O! Raghava, bhuvi on this earth, ya: mānavaḥ who so ever, kārtikēyē in Kartikeya, bhakta: ca is a devotee, āyuṣmān with long life, putrapautrai: with sons and grand sons, skandasālōkyatām being in the same world of Skanda, vrajēt obtain.

O son of the Kakusthas! whosoever reveres Kartikeya on this earth with devotion and faith, shall have a long life, sons and grandsons and after death will reach the world of
Skanda".
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍēṇḍē saptatriṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyseventh sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
