పురా in the olden days, దేవే when Iswara, తప: తప్యమానే engaged in austerities, సర్షిగణా: together with ascetics, దేవా: devatas, సేనాపతిమ్ army general, అభీప్సన్త: desirous of obtaining, పితామహమ్ lord Brahma, ఉపాగమన్ approached.
In olden days when Iswara was engaged in austerities, the devatas together with the ascetics, approached Lord Brahma for an army general.
తతోబ్రువన్ సురాస్సర్వే భగవన్తం పితామహమ్.
ప్రణిపత్య సురాస్సర్వే సేన్ద్రాస్సాగ్నిపురోగమా:৷৷1.37.2৷৷

తత: then, సేన్ద్రా: along with Indra, అగ్నిపురోగమా: fire god in their forefront, సురా: devatas, సర్వే all, భగవన్తమ్ revered, పితామహమ్ lord Brahma, ప్రణిపత్య saluting with folded hands, అబ్రువన్ spoke.
Then led by Indra and the Fire-god all devatas approached Lord Brahma, the grandsire saluted him (with folded hands) and spoke.
యో న స్సేనాపతిర్దేవ దత్తో భగవతా పురా.
తప: పరమమాస్థాయ తప్యతే స్మ సహోమయా৷৷1.37.3৷৷

దేవ O! lord, భగవతా by the venerable one (you), పురా formerly (at the time of creation), న: for us, య: సేనాపతి: that army general, దత్త: was given, ఉమయా సహ with Uma, పరమమ్ great, తప: religious observance, ఆస్థాయ having adopted, తప్యతే is practising austerities.
"O Lord! in ancient times your lordship gave us an army general (at the time of
creation). He is engrossed in great penance along with Uma .
యదత్రానన్తరం కార్యం లోకానాం హితకామ్యయా.
సంవిధత్స్వ విధానజ్ఞ త్వం హి న: పరమా గతి:৷৷1.37.4৷৷

విధానజ్ఞ knower of the law and order, O! Grand-sire, లోకానామ్ for the worlds, హితకామ్యయా desiring welfare, అత్ర in this matter, అనన్తరమ్ after this, యత్ కార్యమ్ whichever act, సంవిధత్స్వ you prescribe, త్వమ్ you, న: for us, పరమా supreme, గతి: హి verily our refuge.
"O Knower of law and order! O Grandsire! verily you are our supreme refuge committed to the welfare of the worlds. Tell us what we should do in this matter (now that we cannot procreate a general on account of Uma's curse)".
దేవతానాం వచశ్శ్రుత్వా సర్వలోకపితామహ:.

సర్వలోకపితామహ: grand-sire of all the worlds, దేవతానామ్ devatas, వచ: words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, మధురై: with sweet, వాక్యై: words, త్రిదశాన్ devatas, సాన్త్వయన్ consoling, ఇదమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.
Hearing the words of the devatas, Brahma, the Grandsire of all the worlds consoled the devatas with sweet words, saying:
శైల పుత్ర్యా యదుక్తం తన్న ప్రజాస్యథ పత్నిషు .
తస్యా వచనమక్లిష్టం సత్యమేతన్న సంశయ:৷৷1.37.6৷৷

ఇయమాకాశగా గఙ్గా యస్యాం పుత్రం హుతాశన:.

యస్యామ్ in this, హుతాశన: fire god, అరిన్దమమ్ destroyer of enemies,, దేవానామ్ for devatas, సేనాపతిమ్ army general, పుత్రమ్ son, జనయిష్యతి will beget, ఇయమ్ such, ఆకాశగా flowing in the celestial regions, గఙ్గా Ganga (exists).
"Ganga keeps flowing in the celestial regions. Through Ganga the Fire-god will beget a son who will be capable of destroying enemies. He will become the army general of the gods".
జ్యేష్ఠా శైలేన్ద్రదుహితా మానయిష్యతి తత్సుతమ్.

జ్యేష్ఠా eldest, శైలేన్ద్రదుహితా daughter of king of mountains, తత్సుతమ్ that son of Agni, మానయిష్యతి will accept, తత్ that one, ఉమాయా: for Uma devi, బహుమతం భవిష్యతి will be acceptable, సంశయ: న no doubt.
"Ganga, the eldest daughter of the king of the mountains, will tend that son of Agni. This will be totally acceptable to Uma. No doubt".
తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా వచనం తస్య కృతార్థా రఘునన్దన.

రఘునన్దన O! Rama, సురా: సర్వే all devatas, తస్య Brahma's, తత్ that, వచనమ్ words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, కృతార్థా: successful in their mission, పితామహమ్ grand-sire, ప్రణిపత్య saluting with folded hands, అపూజయన్ worshipped.
"O son of the Raghus! having heard Brahma's words all the devatas considered themselves successful in their mission. They saluted him with folded hands and offered their worship.
తే గత్వా పర్వతం రామ! కైలాసం ధాతుమణ్డితమ్.
అగ్నిం నియోజయామాసు: పుత్రార్థం సర్వదేవతా:৷৷1.37.10৷৷

తే సర్వదేవతా: all those devatas, ధాతుమణ్డితమ్ adorned with minerals, కైలాసం పర్వతమ్ mount Kailasa, గత్వా having gone, పుత్రార్థమ్ for begetting a son, అగ్నిమ్ fire-god, నియోజయామాసు: appointed.
All the devatas, went to mount Kailasa, adorned with minerals, and urged the Fire-god for a son.
దేవకార్యమిదం దేవ! సంవిధత్స్వ హుతాశన.

దేవ O! Lustrous, హుతశన O! fire deity, ఇదమ్ this, దేవకార్యమ్ divine wish, సంవిధత్స్వ accomplish, మహాతేజ: O! god of mighty energy, తేజ: vital fluid of Ishwara, శైలపుత్ర్యామ్ in that mountain king's daughter, గఙ్గాయామ్ Ganga, ఉత్సృజ release.
'O lustrous Fire-god, accomplish this divine work. O god, possessed of mighty energy, release the vital fluid of Iswara in Ganga, daughter of the king of mountains.
దేవతానాం ప్రతిజ్ఞాయ గఙ్గామభ్యేత్య పావక:.
గర్భం ధారయ వై దేవి! దేవతానామిదం ప్రియమ్৷৷1.37.12৷৷

"The Fire-god gave his consent. The devatas approached Ganga and said, 'O goddess! bear the energy of Siva (inyour world) since this cause is dear to the gods'.
తస్య తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా దివ్యం రూపమధారయత్.
దృష్ట్వా తన్మహిమానం స సమన్తాదవకీర్యత৷৷1.37.13৷৷

"Hearing the words of the Fire-god, Ganga assumed a divine form. Beholding her glory, the god of fire pervaded her from all sides.
సమన్తతస్తదా దేవీమభ్యషిఞ్చత పావక:.
సర్వస్రోతాంసి పూర్ణాని గఙ్గాయా రఘునన్దన!৷৷1.37.14৷৷

రఘునన్దన O! Rama, తదా then, పావక: fire-god, దేవీమ్ Ganga devi, సమన్తత: on all sides, అభ్యషిఞ్చత discharged (sprinkled) the vital fluid of Ishwara preserved in his body, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, సర్వస్రోతాంసి all her streams, పూర్ణాని were filled.
O Rama! then, the Fire-god discharged the vital fluid of Iswara, preserved in his body, which pervaded all sides of Ganga and all her streams were filled with (the fluid).
తమువాచ తతో గఙ్గా సర్వదేవపురోహితమ్.
అశక్తా ధారణే దేవ! తవ తేజ స్సముద్ధతమ్.
దహ్యమానాగ్నినా తేన సమ్ప్రవ్యథితచేతనా৷৷1.37.15৷৷
అశక్తా ధారణే దేవ! తవ తేజ స్సముద్ధతమ్.

తత: then, గఙ్గా Ganga, సర్వదేవపురోహితమ్ (Fire) who was standing ahead of all devatas, తమ్ addressing the fire-deity, ఉవాచ spoke, దేవ O! God of fire, సముద్ధతమ్ ever-increasing, తవ your, తేజ: splendour, ధారణే to hold, అశక్తా incapable, తేన అగ్నినా by fire-deity (by that vital fluid), దహ్యమానా being burnt, సమ్ప్రవ్యథితచేతనా I have greatly distressed consciousness.
Ganga addressing the Fire-god standing ahead of all the devatas said 'O god of fire, I am incapable of holding your ever-increasing splendour. The fiery fluid is burning me. My consciousness is overwhelmed'.
అథాబ్రవీదిదం గఙ్గాం సర్వదేవహుతాశన:.
ఇహ హైమవతీ పాదే గర్భోయం సన్నివేశ్యతామ్৷৷1.37.16৷৷

అథ thereafter, సర్వదేవహుతాశన: partaker of oblations offered to all gods, గఙ్గామ్ Ganga, ఇదమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ spoke, అయమ్ this, గర్భ: embryo, ఇహ here, హైమవతీ mountain Himavat, పాదే slopes, సన్నివేశ్యతామ్ may be placed.
Thereafter the Fire-god who is the partaker of oblations offered to all deities said to Ganga 'Place this embryo on this slope of Mountain Himavan'.
శ్రుత్వా త్వగ్నివచో గఙగా తం గర్భమతిభాస్వరమ్.
ఉత్ససర్జ మహాతేజ స్స్రోతోభ్యో హి తదానఘ !৷৷1.37.17৷৷

మహాతేజ: O! Highly glorious, అనఘ O! Sinless one, అగ్నివచ: words of fire-god, శ్రుత్వా having heard, గఙ్గా Ganga, తదా then, అతిభాస్వరమ్ highly resplendent, తమ్ గర్భమ్ that embryo, స్రోతోభ్య: towards streams of the river, ఉత్ససర్జ released.
"O glorious, sinless one, (Rama)! hearing the words of the Fire-god, Ganga then expelled that resplendent embryo from her streams.
యదస్యా నిర్గతం తస్మాత్తప్తజామ్బూనదప్రభమ్ .
కాఞ్చనం ధరణీం ప్రాప్తం హిరణ్యమమలం శుభమ్৷৷1.37.18৷৷

అస్యా: from this river Ganaga, తప్తజామ్బూనదప్రభమ్ resembling the lustre of the molten gold, యత్ that embryo, నిర్గతమ్ emerging out of her, ధరణీమ్ earth, ప్రాప్తమ్ having reached, తస్మాత్ from it, శుభమ్ auspicious, కాఞ్చనమ్ bright, అమలమ్ pure, హిరణ్యమ్ gold (was produced).
The embryo that emerged from Ganga reached the earth. It resembled the lustre of molten gold. It furned into gold auspicious, bright and pure.
తామ్రం కార్ష్ణాయసం చైవ తైక్ష్ణ్యాదేవాభ్యజాయత৷৷1.37.19৷৷
మలం తస్యాభవత్తత్ర త్రపు సీసకమేవ చ.
తదేతద్ధరణీం ప్రాప్య నానాధాతురవర్ధత৷৷1.37.20৷৷
మలం తస్యాభవత్తత్ర త్రపు సీసకమేవ చ.
తదేతద్ధరణీం ప్రాప్య నానాధాతురవర్ధత৷৷1.37.20৷৷
తత్ర there, తైక్ష్ణ్యాత్ from its severity, తామ్రమ్ copper, కార్ష్ణాయసమ్ చైవ iron also, అభ్యజాయత were produced, తస్య from that embryo, మలమ్ dirt, త్రపు zinc, సీసకమేవ lead, అభవత్ born, తత్ ఏతత్ that vital fluid, ధరణీమ్ earth, ప్రాప్య having reached, నానాధాతు: various minerals, అవర్ధత developed.
There copper and iron were produced from its acidity, zinc and lead from its residue. Various minerals were formed when that embryo reached the earth.
నిక్షిప్తమాత్రే గర్భే తు తేజోభిరభిరఞ్జితమ్.
సర్వం పర్వతసన్నద్ధం సౌవర్ణమభవద్వనమ్৷৷1.37.21৷৷

గర్భే when that embryo, నిక్షిప్తమాత్రే had been just placed, సర్వమ్ all, పర్వతసన్నద్ధమ్ sprouted on the mountain, వనమ్ forest, తేజోభి: with lustre, అభిరఞ్జితమ్ reddened, సౌవర్ణమ్ అభవత్ rendered golden.
When the embryo was placed (in Ganga) it spread on all sides of the forest on the mountain. Irradiated with lustre the forest appeared golden.
జాతరూపమితి ఖ్యాతం తదా ప్రభృతి రాఘవ.
సువర్ణం పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర హుతాశనసమప్రభమ్৷৷1.37.22৷৷
తృణవృక్షలతాగుల్మం సర్వం భవతి కాఞ్చనమ్.

తృణవృక్షలతాగుల్మం సర్వం భవతి కాఞ్చనమ్.
పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర O! Best among men, రాఘవ Rama, తదా ప్రభృతి then onwards, హుతాశనసమప్రభమ్ effulgent like fire, సువర్ణమ్ gold, జాతరూపమ్ Jatarupa (born with a form), (ఇతి) ఖ్యాతమ్ well-known as, సర్వమ్ all, తృణవృక్షలతాగుల్మమ్ with grass, shrubs, creepers and trees, కాఞ్చనం భవతి became gold.
O tiger among men, O scion of the Raghus! Then onwards gold which is effulgent like fire, became well-known as Jatarupa (pure form). The grass, shrubs, creepers and trees of that forest looked golden.
తం కుమారం తతో జాతం సేన్ద్రాస్సహ మరుద్గణా:৷৷1.37.23৷৷
క్షీరసంభావనార్థాయ కృత్తికాస్సమయోజన్.

తత: thereafter, జాతమ్ born, తం కుమారమ్ that Kumara, సేన్ద్రా: together with Indra, మరుద్గణా: groups of deities, సహ together, క్షీరసంభావనార్థాయ with a view to suckle him as their own offspring, కృత్తికా: six nymphs (stars) to act as nurses, సమయోజన్ arranged.
Thereafter Kumara was born (out of Ganga's womb). The gods together with Indra arranged six nymphs (stars) to act as nurses to suckle Kumara as their own offspring.
తా: క్షీరం జాతమాత్రస్య కృత్వా సమయముత్తమమ్৷৷1.37.24৷৷
దదు: పుత్రోయమస్మాకం సర్వాసామితి నిశ్చితా:.
దదు: పుత్రోయమస్మాకం సర్వాసామితి నిశ్చితా:.
తా: those Krittikas, నిశ్చితా: regarded within themselves, అయమ్ this boy, అస్మాకమ్ సర్వాసామ్ for all of us, పుత్ర: son, ఉత్తమమ్ great, సమయమ్ an agreement, కృత్వా having made, జాతమాత్రస్య just then born boy, క్షీరమ్ breast milk, దదు: gave.
Those krittikas, having decided among themselves and having made an agreement with the gods saying! 'This boy shall become a son to all of us' fed the new-born with their milk (breast milk).
తతస్తు దేవతా స్సర్వా: కార్తికేయ ఇతి బ్రువన్৷৷1.37.25৷৷
పుత్రస్త్రైలోక్యవిఖ్యాతో భవిష్యతి న సంశయ:.4-

తత: thereafter, సర్వా: all, దేవతా: devatas, పుత్ర: son, కార్తికేయ: ఇతి as Karthikeya, son of Krittikas, త్రైలోక్యవిఖ్యాత: renowned in three worlds, భవిష్యతి shall become, సంశయ: న no doubt, ఇతి బ్రువన్ thus spoke.
Thereafter, all the gods said, 'This son shall become renowned in the three worlds as Karttikeya, (son of krittikas). There is no doubt '.
తేషాం తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా స్కన్నం గర్భపరిస్రవే৷৷1.37.26৷৷
స్నాపయన్ పరయా లక్ష్మ్యా దీప్యమానం యథానలమ్.

తేషామ్ of those devatas', తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, గర్భపరిస్రవే when the embryo was flowing from womb, స్కన్నమ్ descended, అనలమ్ యథా like fire, పరయా with great, లక్ష్మ్యా beauty, దీప్యమానమ్ shining, స్నాపయన్ bathed.
Hearing the words of the gods, the krittikas bathed the baby that descended from the womb of Ganga resembling flaming fire and shining with great beauty.
స్కన్ద ఇత్యబ్రువన్ దేవా: స్కన్నం గర్భపరిస్రవాత్৷৷1.37.27৷৷
కార్తికేయం మహాభాగం కాకుత్స్థ! జ్వలనోపమమ్.

కాకుత్స్థ! O! Rama, జ్వలనోపమమ్ equal to flaming fire, మహాభాగమ్ very fortunate, గర్భపరిస్రవాత్ embryo from womb, స్కన్నమ్ descended, కార్తికేయమ్ Karthikeya, స్కన్ద: ఇతి will be known as Skanda, దేవా: devatas, అబ్రువన్ spoke.
O scion of the Kakusthas, Karttikeya lustrous like flaming fire, was very fortunate Descended from the womb of the Ganga, he is named Skanda by the gods.
ప్రాదుర్భూతం తత: క్షీరం కృత్తికానామనుత్తమమ్ ৷৷1.37.28৷৷
షణ్ణాం షడాననో భూత్వా జగ్రాహ స్తనజం పయ:.

తత: then, కృత్తికానామ్ of Krittikas, అనుత్తమమ్ very best, క్షీరమ్ milk, ప్రాదుర్భూతమ్ formed, షణ్ణామ్ of six of them, స్తనజమ్ coming from their breasts, పయ: milk, షడానన: six faces Skanda, భూత్వా having assumed, జగ్రాహ received.
Then excellent milk surged in the breasts of krittikas. Assuming six mouths, he sucked the milk.
గృహీత్వా క్షీరమేకాహ్నా సుకుమారవపుస్తదా৷৷1.37.29৷৷
అజయత్స్వేన వీర్యేణ దైత్యసేనాగణాన్ విభు:.

విభు: the capable boy, ఏకాహ్నా for one day only, క్షీరమ్ milk, గృహీత్వా having received, తదా then, సుకుమారవపు: with tender body, స్వేన వీర్యేణ by his inborn prowess, దైత్యసేనాగణాన్ hosts of demons, అజయత్ vanquished.
Drinking milk just for a day and with a body still tender he could vanquish hosts of demons by his inborn prowess so capable be was!
సురసేనాగణపతిం తతస్తమతులద్యుతిమ్৷৷1.37.30৷৷
అభ్యషిఞ్చన్ సురగణా స్సమేత్యాగ్నిపురోగమా:.

తత: then, అగ్నిపురోగమా: with fire-god in the forefront, సురగణా: devatas, సమేత్య having assembled, అతులద్యుతిమ్ a hero of unsurpassed effulgence, తమ్ him, సురసేనాగణపతిమ్ commander of devata forces, అభ్యషిఞ్చన్ installed.
With the Fire-god in the forefront, all the gods assembled and installed Karttikeya, shining on unsurpassed brilliant, as commander of the gods forces.
ఏష తే రామ గఙ్గాయా విస్తరోభిహితో మయా৷৷1.37.31৷৷
కుమారసమ్భవశ్చైవ ధన్య: పుణ్యస్తథైవ చ.

రామ O! Rama, మయా by me, తే to you,గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, ఏష: this story, విస్తర: in detail, తథైవ and, ధన్య: a fortunate being, పుణ్య: auspiciousness, కుమారసమ్భవశ్చైవ birth of Kumara, అభిహిత: has been told.

కాకుత్స్థ O! Raghava, భువి on this earth, య: మానవః who so ever, కార్తికేయే in Kartikeya, భక్త: చ is a devotee, ఆయుష్మాన్ with long life, పుత్రపౌత్రై: with sons and grand sons, స్కన్దసాలోక్యతామ్ being in the same world of Skanda, వ్రజేత్ obtain.
O son of the Kakusthas! whosoever reveres Kartikeya on this earth with devotion and faith, shall have a long life, sons and grandsons and after death will reach the world of
Skanda".
