రఘునన్దన O! Rama, సగరో రాజా king Sagara, పుత్రాన్ sons, చిరగతాన్ having gone for a long time, జ్ఞాత్వా realising, స్వతేజసా by his own lusture, దీప్యమానమ్ resplendent, నప్తారమ్ addressing grand son, అబ్రవీత్ said:
"O Delight of the Raghus, king Sagara, realising that his sons had left long ago said to his grandson Anshuman resplendent with his own lustre:
శూరశ్చ కృతవిద్యశ్చ పూర్వైస్తుల్యోసి తేజసా.
పితృాం గతిమన్విచ్ఛ యేన చాశ్వోపవాహిత:৷৷1.41.2৷৷

శూరశ్చ valiant, కృతవిద్యశ్చ acquired knowledge in various fields, తేజసా by lustre, పూర్వై: with your ancestors, తుల్య: అసి you are equal, పితృామ్ your ancestors, గతిమ్ path, అన్విచ్ఛ search, అశ్వ: horse, యేన by whom, అపవాహిత: is carried away.
'You are valiant. You have acquired knowledge (in various fields). You are illustrious like your ancestors. Pursue the track taken by your uncles and by the thief who ran away with the horse'.
అన్తర్భౌమాని సత్త్వాని వీర్యవన్తి మహాన్తి చ.

అన్తర్భౌమాని in the depths of earth, సత్త్వాని beings, వీర్యవన్తి possess prowess, మహాన్తి చ are also mighty, త్వమ్ you, తేషామ్ theirs, ప్రతిఘాతార్థమ్ to destroy, సాస్త్రమ్ with weapons, కార్ముకమ్ bow, గృహ్ణీష్వ hold.
'Creatures in the depths of the earth are powerful and mighty. Carry with you a bow and weapons to counter their attack'.
అభివాద్యాభివాద్యాంస్త్వం హత్వా విఘ్నకరానపి.
సిద్ధార్థస్సన్నివర్తస్వ మమ యజ్ఞస్య పారగ:৷৷1.41.4৷৷

త్వమ్ you, అభివాద్యాన్ men who deserve to be honoured, అభివాద్య after honouring, విఘ్నకరాన్ those causing obstacles to sacrifice, హత్వా by killing, సిద్ధార్థ: సన్ having accomplished the purpose, మమ my, యజ్ఞస్య sacrifice's, పారగ: you ensure completion of my sacrifice, నివర్తస్వ come back.
'Honour those who deserve it. Kill those who cause obstacles to sacrifice. Come back with your mission accomplishing. And ensure the (successful) completion of my sacrifice'.
ఏవముక్తోంశుమాన్సమ్యక్ సగరేణ మహాత్మనా.
ధనురాదాయ ఖడ్గం చ జగామ లఘువిక్రమ:৷৷1.41.5৷৷

అంశుమాన్ Anshuman, మహాత్మనా by the magnanimous, సగరేణ Sagara, ఏవమ్ in this way, సమ్యక్ thoroughly, ఉక్త: spoken, ధను: bow, ఖడ్గం చ scimitar, ఆదాయ taking, లఘువిక్రమ: rapid strides, జగామ had set out.
"Having been throughly instructed by the high-souled Sagara in this way, Anshuman left with rapid strides carrying a scimitar and a bow.
స ఖాతం పితృభిర్మార్గమన్తర్భౌమం మహాత్మభి:.

నరశ్రేష్ఠ O! Best among men, స: he, రాజ్ఞా by king, అభిచోదిత: directed, మహాత్మభి: by the noble, పితృభి: uncles, అన్తర్భౌమమ్ in the depths of earth, ఖాతమ్ dug, మార్గమ్ path, ప్రాపద్యత followed.
O Best among men! directed by the king (Sagara), Anshuman followed the path taken by his noble uncles into the depths of the earth.
దైత్యదానవరక్షోభి: పిశాచపతగోరగై:.

మహాతేజా: exceedingly valiant, దైత్యదానవరక్షోభి: daityas, danavas, rakshasas, పిశాచపతగోరగై: pisachas, birds and serpents, పూజ్యమానమ్ worshipped by, దిశాగజమ్ elephant of the quarter, అపశ్యత beheld.
Exceedingly valiant Ashuman beheld the elephant of the quarter worshipped by daityas, danavas, rakshasas, pisachas, birds and serpents.
స తం ప్రదక్షిణం కృత్వా పృష్ట్వా చాపి నిరామయమ్.

స: he, తం ప్రదక్షిణం కృత్వా having circumambulated that elephant, నిరామయమ్ well-being, పృష్ట్వా చాపి having enquired, పితృ్ about the younger brothers of his father, వాజిహర్తారమేవ చ about the person who had stolen the sacrificial horse, పరిపప్రచ్ఛ enquired.
Having circumambulated the elephant, he (Anshuman) enquired about his well-being, the where abouts of his uncles and also about the one who had stolen the sacrificial horse.
దిశాగజస్తు తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా ప్రత్యాహాంశుమతో వచ:.
ఆసమఞ్జ కృతార్థస్త్వం సహాశ్వశ్శీఘ్రమేష్యసి৷৷1.41.9৷৷

దిశాగజస్తు elephant of the quarter, అంశుమత: Anshman's, తత్ వచః those words, శ్రుత్వా having listened to, ప్రత్యాహ replied, ఆసమఞ్జ O! Son of Asamanjasa, Anshuman, త్వం you, కృతార్థ: having gained the object, సహాశ్వ: with horse, శ్రీఘ్రమ్ soon, ఏష్యసి will go (back).
Having listened to the words of Anshuman the elephant of the quarter replied, 'O
Anshuman, son of Asamanjasa! having fulfilled your objective, you will go back soon with the horse'.
తస్య తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా సర్వానేవ దిశాగజాన్.
యథాక్రమం యథాన్యాయం ప్రష్టుం సముపచక్రమే৷৷1.41.10৷৷

తస్య his (elephant's), తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా having listened to, సర్వానేవ all of them, దిశాగజాన్ elephants of the quarters, యథాక్రమమ్ successively, యథాన్యాయమ్ with due respect, ప్రష్టుమ్ to enquire, ఉపచక్రమే commenced.
Having listened to the words of the elephant, Anshuman started enquring the well being of each of the guardians (elephants) of the quarters successively with due respect:
తైశ్చ సర్వైర్దిశాపాలైర్వాక్యజ్ఞైర్వాక్యకోవిదై:.
పూజితస్సహయశ్చైవ గన్తాసీత్యభిచోదిత:৷৷1.41.11৷৷

వాక్యజ్ఞై: knowers of essence of words, వాక్యకోవిదై: proficient in the application of words, సర్వై: by all, తై: దిశాపాలై: by those mighty elephants, పూజిత: honoured, సహయ: with the horse, గన్తాసి ఇతి you will go back, అభిచోదిత: was directed.
All those elephants of the quarters were knowers of the essence of words and proficient in the right use of words. Treating him kindly the elephants encouraged him saying, 'You will go back with the horse'.
తేషాం తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా జగామ లఘువిక్రమ:.
భస్మరాశీకృతా యత్ర పితరస్తస్య సాగరా:৷৷1.41.12৷৷

తేషామ్ their, తద్వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, లఘువిక్రమ: with quick paces, తస్య his, పితర: younger brothers of his father, సాగరా: sons of Sagara, యత్ర where, భస్మరాశీకృతా: were reduced into heaps of ashes, జగామ had gone.
Hearing their words with a quick pace where he reached the place his uncles, sons of Sagara were reduced to heaps of ashes.
స దు:ఖవశమాపన్నస్త్వసమఞ్జసుతస్తదా.
చుక్రోశ పరమార్తస్తు వధాత్తేషాం సుదు:ఖిత:৷৷1.41.13৷৷

తదా then, స: he, అసమఞ్జసుత: son of Asamanjasa, దు:ఖవశమ్ possessed by grief, ఆపన్న: having reached, పరమార్త: greatly distressed, తేషామ్ their, వధాత్ by destruction, సుదు:ఖిత: greatly grieved, చుక్రోశ cried out.
Then the son of Asamanjasa, overwhelmed with sorrow and deeply distressed at their destruction, bewailed with great grief.
యజ్ఞీయం చ హయం తత్ర చరన్తమవిదూరత:.
దదర్శ పురుషవ్యాఘ్రో దు:ఖశోకసమన్విత:৷৷1.41.14৷৷

దు:ఖశోకసమన్విత: possessed by grief and sorrow, పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర: that tiger like brave one among men, అవిదూరత: nearby, చరన్తమ్ grazing, యజ్ఞీయమ్ sacrificial, హయమ్ horse, దదర్శ beheld.
Possessed by grief and tears, Anshuman, that tiger among men, beheld the sacrificial horse grazing nearby.
స తేషాం రాజపుత్రాణాం కర్తుకామో జలక్రియామ్ .
సలిలార్థీ మహాతేజా న చాపశ్యజ్జలాశయమ్ ৷৷1.41.15৷৷

మహాతేజా: highly lustrous, స: he, తేషామ్ for those, రాజపుత్రాణామ్ princes, జలక్రియామ్ presenting libations of waters (to the manes of the deceased), కర్తుకామ: with intention of doing, సలిలార్థీ seeking water, జలాశయమ్ reservoir of water, న చ అపశ్యత్ could not see.
With the intention of performing traditional funeral rites with water for the deceased princes, highly lustrous Anshuman looked around for water but could not see any
reservoir of water (in the neighbourhood).
విసార్య నిపుణాం దృష్టిం తతోపశ్యత్ఖగాధిపమ్ .
పితృాం మాతులం రామ! సుపర్ణమనిలోపమమ్৷৷1.41.16৷৷

రామ O! Rama, తత: afterwards, నిపుణామ్ intelligent, దృష్టిమ్ glances, విసార్య extending, పితృామ్ uncles', మాతులమ్ maternal uncle, ఖగాధిపమ్ lord of the eagles, అనిలోపమమ్ resembling wind in swiftness, సుపర్ణమ్ Garuda (brother of Suparna, the mother of princes), అపశ్యత్ beheld.
O Rama! with his keen eyes, he (Anshuman) marked Suparna, the maternal uncle of his uncles, lord of the eagles (Garuda) bestowed with the swiftness of the wind.
స చైవమబ్రవీద్వాక్యం వైనతేయో మహాబల :.
మా శుచ: పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర! వధోయం లోకసమ్మత:৷৷1.41.17৷৷

మహాబల: highly powerful, స: వైనతేయ: Garuda, son of Vinata, (ఏనమ్ addressing him), వాక్యమ్ words, ఏవం thus, అబ్రవీత్ said, పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర O! Tiger among men, మా శుచ: do not grieve, అయం వధ: this act of assasination, లోకసమ్మత: is aimed for the welfare of the three worlds.
Highly powerful Garuda, son of Vinata, addressing Anshuman said 'O Tiger among men! do not grieve. This act of assasination is meant for the welfare of the three worlds'.
కపిలేనాప్రమేయేన దగ్ధా హీమే మహాబలా:.
సలిలం నార్హసి ప్రాజ్ఞ దాతుమేషాం హి లౌకికమ్৷৷1.41.18৷৷
సలిలం నార్హసి ప్రాజ్ఞ దాతుమేషాం హి లౌకికమ్৷৷1.41.18৷৷
మహాబలా: highly valiant, ఇమే these, అప్రమేయేన by one who has boundless power, కపిలేన by Kapila, దగ్ధా: హి have been burnt indeed, ప్రాజ్ఞ O! Sagacious one, లౌకికమ్ worldly (ordinary), సలిలమ్ water, దాతుమ్ to offer, నార్హసి is not proper on your part.
'Your valiant uncles have been burnt by Kapila of boundless power. O Sagcious one! performing traditional rites with ordinary water is not proper'.
గఙ్గా హిమవతో జ్యేష్ఠా దుహితా పురుషర్షభ!.
తస్యాం కురు మహాబాహో! పితృాం తు జలక్రియామ్৷৷1.41.19৷৷

పురుషర్షభ O! Best among men, హిమవత: Himavan's, జ్యేష్ఠా eldest daughter, గఙ్గా Ganga, మహాబాహో O! Mighty armed one, పితృామ్ yours uncles', జలక్రియామ్ traditional rites with water, తస్యామ్ in her (those waters), కురు perform.
'O Best among men! O Mighty-armed one! perform the traditional rites of your uncles with water from river Ganga, the eldest daughter of Himavat'.
భస్మరాశీకృతానేతాన్ ప్లావయేల్లోకపావనీ.
తయా క్లిన్నమిదం భస్మ గఙ్గయా లోకకాన్తయా৷৷1.41.20৷৷
షష్టిం పుత్రసహస్రాణి స్వర్గలోకం చ నేష్యతి.
తయా క్లిన్నమిదం భస్మ గఙ్గయా లోకకాన్తయా৷৷1.41.20৷৷
షష్టిం పుత్రసహస్రాణి స్వర్గలోకం చ నేష్యతి.
లోకపావనీ purifier of the three worlds, that Ganga, భస్మరాశీకృతాన్ reduced to heaps of ash, ఏతాన్ these, ప్లావయేత్ will sanctify, లోకకాన్తయా by the beloved one of the world, తయా గఙ్గయా by that Ganga, క్లిన్నమ్ inundated, ఇదం భస్మ these heaps of ash, షష్టిం పుత్రసహస్రాణి sixty thousand sons, స్వర్గలోకమ్ heavens చ నేష్యతి will take also.
Ganga, the purifier of the three worlds, will sanctify your uncles reduced to heaps of ashes. These heaps when inundated by waters of Ganga, beloved of the worlds, will take all the sixty thousand sons to heaven.
గచ్ఛ చాశ్వం మహాభాగ తం గృహ్య పురుషర్షభ!৷৷1.41.21৷৷
యజ్ఞం పైతామహం వీర సంవర్తయితుమర్హసి.
యజ్ఞం పైతామహం వీర సంవర్తయితుమర్హసి.
మహాభాగ O! Highly fortunate one, పురుషర్షభ O! Best among men, తమ్ అశ్వమ్ that horse, గృహ్య taking, గచ్ఛ go back, వీర O! hero, పైతామహమ్ grand father's, యజ్ఞమ్ sacrifice, సంవర్తయితుమ్ to complete, అర్హసి it behoves of you.
'O Highly fortunate one! O Best among men! go back with that horse. O Hero! It
behoves of you to complete the sacrifice undertaken by your grandfather'.
సుపర్ణవచనం శ్రుత్వా సోంశుమానతివీర్యవాన్ ৷৷1.41.22৷৷
త్వరితం హయమాదాయ పునరాయాన్మహాయశా:.
త్వరితం హయమాదాయ పునరాయాన్మహాయశా:.
అతివీర్యవాన్ exceedingly powerful, మహాయశా: highly renowned, అంశుమాన్ Anshuman, సుపర్ణవచనమ్ words of Suparna, శ్రుత్వా having heard, త్వరితమ్ quickly, హయమ్ horse, ఆదాయ taking hold of, పున: again, ఆయాత్ returned.
Exceedingly powerful and highly renowned Anshuman, on hearing the words of Garuda returned quickly to the capital with the horse৷৷
తతో రాజానమాసాద్య దీక్షితం రఘునన్దన!৷৷1.41.23৷৷
న్యవేదయద్యథావృత్తం సుపర్ణవచనం తథా.
న్యవేదయద్యథావృత్తం సుపర్ణవచనం తథా.
రఘునన్దన O! Rama, దీక్షితమ్ one who is initiated into ceremony, రాజానమ్ king, ఆసాద్య having reached, యథావృత్తమ్ in conformity with what had happened, తథా faithfully, సుపర్ణవచనమ్ words of Suparna, న్యవేదయత్ communicated.
O Descendant of the Raghus (Rama), having reached the king who had been initiated into the ceremony, Anshuman communicated faithfully to him all that had happened. He also reported the words Suparna had said.
తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా ఘోరసఙ్కాశం వాక్యమంశుమతో నృప:৷৷1.41.24৷৷
యజ్ఞం నివర్తయామాస యథాకల్పం యథావిధి.
యజ్ఞం నివర్తయామాస యథాకల్పం యథావిధి.
నృప: king, అంశుమత: Anshuman's, ఘోరసఙ్కాశమ్ aweful, వాక్యమ్ words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, యథాకల్పమ్ in accordance with rules of Kalpa, the vedanga, యథావిధి in accordance with the scriptures and tradition, యజ్ఞమ్ sacrifice ,నివర్తయామాస performed.
The king heard (was stunned to hear) the awful words of Anshuman, (yet) he
performed the sacrifice in accordance with traditional scriptures and Kalpa, the
Vedanga.
స్వపురం చాగమచ్ఛ్రీమానిష్టయజ్ఞోమహీపతి:৷৷1.41.25৷৷
గఙ్గాయాశ్చాగమే రాజా నిశ్చయం నాధ్యగచ్ఛత.
గఙ్గాయాశ్చాగమే రాజా నిశ్చయం నాధ్యగచ్ఛత.
శ్రీమాన్ auspicious, మహీపతి: lord of earth, king Sagara, ఇష్టయజ్ఞ: had completed the performance of the sacrifice, స్వపురమ్ to his own capital, ఆగమత్ reached, రాజా king, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga, ఆగమే in the matter of descent, నిశ్చయమ్ decision, నాధ్యగచ్ఛత did not arrive (at any).
The great lord of the earth (king Sagara) after performing the sacrifice reached his capital. (But) He could not devise any means to bring Ganga down to the earth.
అకృత్వా నిశ్చయం రాజా కాలేన మహతా మహాన్ .
త్రింశద్వర్షసహస్రాణి రాజ్యం కృత్వా దివం గత:৷৷1.41.26৷৷

మహాన్ mighty, రాజా king, మహతా కాలేన for a long time, నిశ్చయం అకృత్వా without arriving at any decision (in the matter of bringing Ganga down to earth), త్రింశద్వర్షసహస్రాణి thirty thousand years, రాజ్యమ్ kingdom, కృత్వా having ruled, దివం గత: ascended heaven.
The mighty king (Sagara), over a long period of time without being able to devise means (to bring Ganga down to the earth), ruled the kingdom for thirty thousand years and ascended to heaven".

Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
