[ Anshuman performs penance to bring Ganga to the earth-- Bhagiratha follows

--receives boon from Brahma--Brahma informs Anshuman that only lord Siva is capable to hold Ganga.]

కాలధర్మం గతే రామ సగరే ప్రకృతీజనా:.

రాజానం రోచయామాసురంశుమన్తం సుధార్మికమ్৷৷1.42.1৷৷


రామ O! Rama, సగరే when king Sagara, కాలధర్మమ్ duty of nature, death, గతే obtained, ప్రకృతీజనా: ministers and subjects, సుధార్మికమ్ highly virtuous, అంశుమన్తమ్ Anshuman, రాజానమ్ as king, రోచయామాసు: accepted.

"O Rama! when Sagara died, the subjects installed the highly virtuous Anshuman as king.
స రాజా సుమహానాసీదంశుమాన్ రఘునన్దన! .

తస్య పుత్రో మహానాసీద్దిలీప ఇతి విశ్రుత:৷৷1.42.2৷৷


రఘునన్దన O! Descendent of Raghu, Rama, స: అంశుమాన్ that Anshuman, సుమహాన్ very great, రాజా ఆసీత్ was a monarch, తస్య for him, దిలీప ఇతి by name Dilipa, విశ్రుత: celebrated, మహాన్ great, పుత్ర: ఆసీత్ a son was born.

O descendnt of the Raghus! that Anshuman became a very great monarch. He had a great son, Dilipa who became famous.
తస్మిన్ రాజ్యం సమావేశ్య దిలీపే రఘునన్దన!.

హిమవచ్ఛిఖరే పుణ్యే తపస్తేపే సుదారుణమ్৷৷1.42.3৷৷


రఘునన్దన O! Rama, తస్మిన్ దిలీపే in that Dilipa, రాజ్యమ్ kingdom, సమావేశ్య vesting, పుణ్యే pious, హిమవచ్ఛిఖరే on the peak of Himavat mountain, సుదారుణమ్ rigid, తప: penance, తేపే he performed.

O Delight of the Raghus! having vested the kingdom with Dilipa, Anshuman performed rigid penance on the sacred peak of the Himavat mountain.
ద్వాత్రింశచ్చ సహస్రాణి వర్షాణి సుమహాయశా:.

తపోవనం గతో రామ స్వర్గం లేభే తపోధన:৷৷1.42.4৷৷


రామ O! Rama, సుమహాయశా: highly renowned Anshuman, ద్వాత్రింశత్ సహస్రాణి thirty two thousand, వర్షాణి years, తపోవనం గత: having reached tapovana, తపోధన: one who had asceticism as wealth, స్వర్గమ్ heaven, లేభే attained.

O Rama! highly renowned Anshuman, having lived for thirtytwo thousand years in the tapovana, turned an ascetic and attained heaven (without accomplishing his objective).
దిలీపస్తు మహాతేజాశ్శ్రుత్వా పైతామహం వధమ్.

దు:ఖోపహతయా బుద్ధ్యా నిశ్చయం నాధ్యగచ్ఛత৷৷1.42.5৷৷


మహాతేజా: exceedingly lustrous, దిలీపస్తు Dilipa on his part, పైతామహమ్ relating to his grand-fathers, వధమ్ killing, శ్రుత్వా having heard, దు:ఖోపహతయా overtaken by grief, బుద్ధ్యా with his intellect, నిశ్చయమ్ conclusion, నాధ్యగచ్ఛత did not arrive at.

When exceedingly brilliant Dilipa heard about the death of his grandfathers, he was overtaken by grief but could not arrive at any conclusion with his intellect (regarding means of bringing down the sacred river).
కథం గఙ్గావతరణం కథం తేషాం జలక్రియా.

తారయేయం కథం చైతానితి చిన్తాపరోభవత్৷৷1.42.6৷৷


గఙ్గావతరణమ్ descent of Ganga, కథమ్ how to do?, తేషామ్ their, జలక్రియా funeral rites with water, కథమ్ how to do?, ఏతాన్ them, కథమ్ how to, తారయేయమ్ ఇతి (help them to cross the wordly sea of suffering and reach heaven) liberate, చిన్తాపర: thoughtful, అభూత్ became.

How to bring about the descent of Ganga? How to perform funeral rites of the ancestors with Ganga water? How to liberate them Thus Dilipa was constantly engaged in such thoughts.
తస్య చిన్తయతో నిత్యం ధర్మేణ విదితాత్మన:.

పుత్రో భగీరథో నామ జజ్ఞే పరమధార్మిక:৷৷1.42.7৷৷


విదితాత్మన: well-known for his intelligence, ధర్మేణ with righteousness, నిత్యమ్ constantly, చిన్తయత: while reflecting, తస్య for him, భగీరథో నామ named Bhagiratha, పరమధార్మిక: highly virtuous, పుత్ర: son, జజ్ఞే was born.

As Dilipa known for his knowledge of the soul constantly reflected righteously on (this matter of Ganga), a highly virtuous son named Bhagiratha was born to him.
దిలీపస్తు మహాతేజా యజ్ఞైర్బహుభిరిష్టవాన్.

త్రింశద్వర్షసహస్రాణి రాజా రాజ్యమకారయత్৷৷1.42.8৷৷


మహాతేజా: most brilliant, దిలీపస్తు Dilipa on his part, బహుభి: by any, యజ్ఞై: sacrifices, ఇష్టవాన్ performed, రాజా king, త్రింశద్వర్షసహస్రాణి thirty thousand years, రాజ్యమ్ kingdom, అకారయత్ ruled.

Most brilliant king Dilipa ruled the kingdom for thirty thousand years performing many sacrifices.
అగత్వా నిశ్చయం రాజా తేషాముద్ధరణం ప్రతి .

వ్యాధినా నరశార్దూల కాలధర్మముపేయివాన్৷৷1.42.9৷৷


నరశార్దూల O! Tiger among men, రాజా king Dilipa, తేషామ్ their, ఉద్ధరణం ప్రతి about salvation, నిశ్చయమ్ conclusion, అగత్వా not able to arrive, వ్యాధినా by suffering illness, కాలధర్మమ్ death, ఉపేయివాన్ effected.

O Tiger among men! king Dilipa was unable to arrive at a conclusion regarding the
salvation of his ancestors.He was affected by illness and died.
ఇన్ద్రలోకం గతో రాజా స్వార్జితేనైవ కర్మణా.

రాజ్యే భగీరథం పుత్రమభిషిచ్య నరర్షభ:৷৷1.42.10৷৷


నరర్షభ: the best among men, రాజా king Dilipa, పుత్రమ్ son, భగీరథమ్ Bhagiratha, రాజ్యే in the kingdom, అభిషిచ్య having conducted coronation, స్వార్జితేనైవ with self-earned, కర్మణా ఏవ acts only, ఇన్ద్రలోకమ్ towards the region of Indra, గత: had gone.

The king (Dilipa) performed the coronation of his son Bhagiratha and reached the region of Indra as a reward for virtuous acts done by him.
భగీరథస్తు రాజర్షిర్ధార్మికో రఘునన్దన!.

అనపత్యో మహాతేజా: ప్రజాకామస్స చాప్రజ:৷৷1.42.11৷৷


రఘునన్దన O! Rama, ధార్మిక: righteous one, మహాతేజా: highly lustrous, రాజర్షి: royal sage, భగీరథస్తు Bhagiratha, అనపత్య: without sons, స: he, ప్రజాకామ: desirous of progeny, అప్రజా: did not beget children.

O delight of the Raghus! righteous Bhagiratha who was highly lustrous rajarshi was without sons. He was desirous of progeny but did not beget children.
మన్త్రిష్వాధాయ తద్రాజ్యం గఙ్గావతరణే రత:.

స తపో దీర్ఘమాతిష్ఠద్గోకర్ణే రఘునన్దన৷৷1.42.12৷৷

ఊర్ధ్వబాహు: పఞ్చతపా మాసాహారో జితేన్ద్రియ:.


రఘునన్దన O! Rama, స: he, గఙ్గావతరణే for the descent of Ganga, రత: keenly desiring, తద్రాజ్యమ్ that kingdom, మన్త్రిషు in his ministers, ఆధాయ after entrusting, ఊర్ధ్వబాహు: with arms held upwards, పఞ్చతపా: surrounded by four fires in the hot season and standing under the sun, the fifth fire, మాసాహార: partaking food once a month, జితేన్ద్రియ: with his senses controlled, గోకర్ణే at the sacred spot, Gokarna, దీర్ఘమ్ for long years, తప: yogic penance, ఆతిష్ఠత్ practised.

O son of the Raghus (Rama), Bhagiratha, with a determination to bring down Ganga
entrusted the kingdom to his ministers and went to a sacred place known as Gokarna. There with arms uplifted surrounded by four fires, partaking food once a month, with his senses controlled, carried out panchatapa for a number of years.
తస్య వర్షసహస్రాణి ఘోరే తపసి తిష్ఠత:৷৷1.42.13৷৷

అతీతాని మహాబాహో తస్య రాజ్ఞో మహాత్మన:.

సుప్రీతో భగవాన్ బ్రహ్మా ప్రజానాం పతిరీశ్వర:৷৷1.42.14৷৷


మహాబాహో O! Mighty armed Rama, తస్య while he was, ఘోరే తపసి amidst rigid austerities, తిష్ఠత: while he was determined to carry on, వర్షసహస్రాణి thousands of years, అతీతాని passed away, ప్రజానామ్ for all men, పతి: lord, ఈశ్వర: lord, భగవాన్ బ్రహ్మా god Brahma, తస్య his, మహాత్మన: illustrious, రాజ్ఞ: for king, సుప్రీత: was highly pleased.

O mighty-armed, (Rama)! Bhagiratha continued in that state for a thousand years amidst rigid austerities. Lord of all creatures, Brahma was highly pleased with that illustrious king.
తతస్సురగణైస్సార్ధముపాగమ్య పితామహ:.

భగీరథం మహాత్మానం తప్యమానమథాబ్రవీత్৷৷1.42.15৷৷


తత: thereafter, పితామహ: grand-sire, సురగణై: with groups of devatas, ఉపాగమ్య having arrived, అథ thereafter, తప్యమానమ్ engaged in austerities, మహాత్మానమ్ illustrious, భగీరథమ్ Bhagiratha, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Thereafter, the Grandsire arrived with the gods and spoke to the noble Bhagiratha engaged in austerities.
భగీరథ మహాభాగ! ప్రీతస్తేహం జనేశ్వర!.

తపసా చ సుతప్తేన వరం వరయ సువ్రత!৷৷1.42.16৷৷


మహాభాగ O! Highly distinguished one, జనేశ్వర O! Mighty monarch, భగీరథ O! Bhagiratha, తే by you, సుతప్తేన by properly disciplined, తపసా austerities, అహమ్ I, ప్రీత: pleased, సువ్రత O! You of excellent vows, వరమ్ boon, వరయ ask for.

'O distinguished one! O mighty monarch! O Bhagiratha of excellent vows! I am pleased with your well-disciplined austerities. Ask for a boon'.
తమువాచ మహాతేజా: సర్వలోకపితామహమ్.

భగీరథో మహాభాగ: కృతాఞ్జలిరుపస్థిత:৷৷1.42.17৷৷


మహాతేజా: most brilliant one, మహాభాగ: highly glorious, భగీరథః Bhagiratha, కృతాఞ్జలి: with folded palms, ఉపస్థిత: having approached, తం సర్వలోకపితామహమ్ grand-sire for all the worlds, ఉవాచ spoke.

Brilliant, glorious Bhagiratha, stood before the Grandsire of all the worlds with folded palms and spoke":
యది మే భగవన్ ప్రీతో యద్యస్తి తపస: ఫలమ్.

సగరస్యాత్మజాస్సర్వే మత్తస్సలిలమాప్నుయు:৷৷1.42.18৷৷


భగవన్ O! Adorable one, మే with me, ప్రీత: యది if you are pleased, తపస: of austerities, ఫలమ్ అస్తి యది if worthy reward is possible, సగరస్య king Sagara's, ఆత్మజా: sons, సర్వే all, మత్త: from me, సలిలమ్ funeral rites with water, ఆప్నుయు: may receive.

'O Lord! if you are pleased with my austerities and if they are worthy of a reward, grant me the boon whereby all the sons of Sagara will receive from me funeral rites with the waters (of Ganga)'.
గఙ్గాయాస్సలిలక్లిన్నే భస్మన్యేషాం మహాత్మనామ్.

స్వర్గం గచ్ఛేయురత్యన్తం సర్వే మే ప్రపితామహా:৷৷1.42.19৷৷


ఏషామ్ these, మహాత్మనామ్ eminent ones, భస్మని in ashes, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, సలిలక్లిన్నే immersed by the waters, మే my, సర్వే all, ప్రపితామహా: uncles of my grand father, అత్యన్తమ్ ultimately, స్వర్గమ్ towards heaven, గచ్ఛేయు: may go.

'The ashes of these eminent uncles of my grandfather, immersed by the waters of Ganga may ultimately go to heaven'.
దేయా చ సన్తతిర్దేవ! నావసీదేత్కులం చ న:.

ఇక్ష్వాకూణాం కులే దేవ! ఏష మేస్తు వర:పర:৷৷1.42.20৷৷


దేవ O! Divine lord, ఇక్ష్వాకూణామ్ for Ikshvakus, కులే in the dynasty, సన్తతి: progeny, దేయా should be bestowed, న: our, కులమ్ race, నావసీదేత్ let it not be terminated, ఏష: this, మే my, పర: another, వర: అస్తు let it be a boon.

'O Lord! let the progeny be perpuated in our race of the Ikshvakus. Let not that dynasty be terminated with me. This is another boon I seek'.
ఉక్తవాక్యం తు రాజానం సర్వలోకపితామహ:.

ప్రత్యువాచ శుభాం వాణీం మధురాం మధురాక్షరామ్৷৷1.42.21৷৷


సర్వలోకపితామహ: grand-sire for all the worlds, ఉక్తవాక్యమ్ him who has spoken these words, రాజానమ్ addressing the king, శుభామ్ auspicious, మధురామ్ sweet, మధురాక్షరామ్ with agreeable letters, వాణీమ్ words, ప్రత్యువాచ replied.

To this the Grandsire of all the worlds replied with a sweet voice full of good wishes and sweet words.
మనోరథో మహానేష భగీరథ మహారథ!.

ఏవం భవతు భద్రం తే ఇక్ష్వాకుకులవర్ధన!৷৷1.42.22৷৷


మహారథ O! Great charioteer, భగీరథ Bhagiratha, ఏష: this, మనోరథ desire, మహాన్ great, ఇక్ష్వాకు కులవర్ధన perpetuator of dynasty of Ikshvaku, ఏవమ్ in this way, భవతు may happen, తే భద్రమ్ prosperity to you.

'O Great charioteer! Bhagiratha, your desire is great. O Perpetuator of dynasty of the
Ikshvakus, let your wish be fulfilled. Prosperity to you'.
ఇయం హైమవతీ గఙ్గా జ్యేష్ఠా హిమవతస్సుతా.

తాం వై ధారయితుం శక్తో హరస్తత్ర నియుజ్యతామ్৷৷1.42.23৷৷


హైమవతీ Haimavati, the daughter of Himavat, ఇయమ్ this, గఙ్గా Ganga, హిమవత: Himavat's, జ్యేష్ఠా సుతా eldest daughter, తామ్ her, ధారయితుమ్ to hold, శక్త: capable, హర: lord Shiva, తత్ర there, నియుజ్యతామ్ may be entreated.

'This Hymavati (Ganga) is Himavat's eldest daughter and only lord Siva is capable to hold (the force of her descent to earth). Therefore let Siva be entreated'.
గఙ్గాయా: పతనం రాజన్! పృథివీ న సహిష్యతి.

తాం వై ధారయితుం వీర! నాన్యం పశ్యామి శూలిన:৷৷1.42.24৷৷


రాజన్ O! King, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, పతనమ్ descent, పృథివీ earth, న సహిష్యతి cannot sustain, వీర O! Hero, తామ్ her, ధారయితుమ్ to hold, శూలిన: other than Siva, the wielder of trident, అన్యమ్ any other person, న పశ్యామి I do not see.

'O King! Ganga's descent cannot be sustained by earth. O Hero! I do not see any other person to hold her than the wielder of the trident (Siva)'.
తమేవముక్త్వా రాజానం గఙ్గాం చాభాష్య లోకకృత్.

జగామ త్రిదివం దేవస్సహదేవైర్మరుద్గణై:৷৷1.42.25৷৷


లోకకృత్ (దేవః) the creator of the worlds, తం రాజానమ్ addressing that king, ఏవమ్ in this way, ఉక్త్వా having spoken, గఙ్గాం చ Ganga also, ఆభాష్య after conversing, సహ దేవై: along with devatas, మరుద్గణై: with groups of maruts, త్రిదివమ్ towards heaven, జగామ had gone.

The Creator of the worlds having thus addressed the king and conversing with Ganga went towards heaven along with devatas and maruts".
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే బాలకాణ్డే ద్విచత్వారింశస్సర్గ:৷৷
