[Pleased with the austerities of Bhagiratha, Siva holds Ganga on his head during her descent and releases in Bindu lake--Ganga branches into seven streams--following Bhagiratha, Ganga reaches the nether world and delivers the souls of Sagara's sons.]

దేవదేవే గతే తస్మిన్ సోఙ్గుష్ఠాగ్రనిపీడితామ్.

కృత్వా వసుమతీం రామ సంవత్సరముపాసత৷৷1.43.1৷৷


రామ O! Rama, తస్మిన్ దేవదేవే when that god of gods, Brahma, గతే had departed, స: he, వసుమతీమ్ earth, అఙ్గుష్ఠాగ్రనిపీడితామ్ pressing with the tip of his great toe, కృత్వా having made, సంవత్సరమ్ for one year, ఉపాసత meditated upon.

"O Rama! when that God of the gods (Brahma) departed, Bhagiratha, pressing the earth with the tip of his big toe (standing supported by the big toe) penanced (meditated upon Siva) for one year.
అథ సంవత్సరే పూర్ణే సర్వలోకనమస్కృత:.

ఉమాపతి: పశుపతీ రాజానమిదమబ్రవీత్৷৷1.43.2৷৷


అథ thereafter, సంవత్సరే when one year, పూర్ణే was completed, సర్వలోకనమస్కృత: he, worshipped by all in all worlds, ఉమాపతి: husband of Uma, పశుపతి: Iswara, రాజానమ్ addressing king, ఇదమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

After one full year was completed, Iswara who is worshipped by all in all the worlds said to king Bhagiratha:
ప్రీతస్తేహం నరశ్రేష్ఠ! కరిష్యామి తవ ప్రియమ్.

శిరసా ధారయిష్యామి శైలరాజసుతామహమ్৷৷1.43.3৷৷


నరశ్రేష్ఠ O! Best among men, అహమ్ I, తే with you, ప్రీత: pleased, తవ to you, ప్రియమ్ dear, కరిష్యామి I shall do, అహమ్ I, శైలరాజసుతామ్ daughter of the king of mountains, శిరసా with my head, ధారయిష్యామి will hold.

"O Best of men! I am pleased with your devotion. I will hold Ganga on my head, the daughter of the king of mountains (to reduce the force of her descent). I shall do your wish.
తతో హైమవతీ జ్యేష్ఠా సర్వలోకనమస్కృతా.

తదా సాతిమహద్రూపం కృత్వా వేగం చ దుస్సహమ్৷৷1.43.4৷৷

ఆకాశాదపతద్రామ ! శివే శివశిరస్యుత.


రామ O! Rama, తత: thereafter, హైమవతీ daughter of Himvat, సర్వలోకనమస్కృతా adored by all worlds, జ్యేష్ఠా eldest (గఙ్గా Ganga), తదా then, అతి మహత్ mighty, రూపం form, దస్సహమ్ unbearable, వేగం speed, కృత్వా having assumed, ఆకాశాత్ from the sky, శివే on the auspicious, శివశిరసి on the head of Siva, అపతత్ ఉత fell down.

Then Ganga, the eldest daughter of Himavat who is adored by all the worlds, assuming the form of a mighty river descended from the sky with unbearable speed on the auspicious head of Siva.
అచిన్తయచ్చ సా దేవీ గఙ్గా పరమదుర్ధరా৷৷1.43.5৷৷

విశామ్యహం హి పాతాలం స్రోతసా గృహ్య శఙ్కరమ్.


పరమదుర్ధరా extremely difficult to contain, సా దేవీ that goddess, గఙ్గా Ganga, అచిన్తయచ్చ also thought over, అహమ్ I, స్రోతసా by my flow, శఙ్కరమ్ Siva, గృహ్య seizing, పాతాలమ్ lower regions of earth, విశామి I shall enter.

"Goddess Ganga, extremely difficult to contain, thought that seizing Siva with her flow she would enter the lower regions of the earth.
తస్యావలేపనం జ్ఞాత్వా క్రుద్ధస్తు భగవాన్ హర:৷৷1.43.6৷৷

తిరోభావయితుం బుద్ధిం చక్రే త్రినయనస్తదా.


త్రినయన: three-eyed, భగవాన్ worshipful, హర: Iswara, తస్యా: her, అవలేపనమ్ proud intentions, జ్ఞాత్వా having come to know, తదా then, తిరోభావయితుమ్ to send her back, బుద్ధిమ్ determination, చక్రే made.

Then the three-eyed Lord Siva, aware of her proud intentions applied his intelligence to conceal her.
సా తస్మిన్ పతితా పుణ్యా పుణ్యే రుద్రస్య మూర్ధని৷৷1.43.7৷৷

హిమవత్ప్రతిమే రామ! జటామణ్డలగహ్వరే.


రామ O! Rama, సా పుణ్యా that sacred river Ganga, హిమవత్ప్రతిమే resembling Himavat mountain, జటామణ్డలగహ్వరే cave of the locks of hair, తస్మిన్ on that, రుద్రస్య Siva's, పుణ్యే sacred, మూర్ధని head, పతితా fell.

O Rama! that sacred river (Ganga), descended on to the depths of the matted locks on the holy head of Siva resembling the mount Himavan.
సా కథఞ్చిన్మహీం గన్తుం నాశక్నోద్యత్నమాస్థితా৷৷1.43.8৷৷

నైవ నిర్గమనం లేభే జటామణ్డలమోహితా.


సా that Ganga, యత్నమ్ effort, ఆస్థితా having put in, కథఞ్చిత్ by any means, మహీమ్ earth, గన్తుమ్ to reach, న అశక్నోత్ was not poweful, జటామణ్డలమోహితా enveloped by matted locks of hair, నిర్గమనమ్ exit, న లేభే did not obtain.

Trapped in the matted locks, she (Ganga) could not come out. With all her efforts she could not reach the earth.
తత్రైవాబమ్భ్రమద్దేవీ సంవత్సరగణాన్ బహూన్৷৷1.43.9৷৷

తామపశ్యన్పునస్తత్ర తప: పరమమాస్థిత:.


దేవీ Ganga, బహూన్ many, సంవత్సరగణాన్ for a number of years, తత్రైవ there alone, అబమ్భ్రమత్ went round and round, తామ్ that Ganga, అపశ్యన్ without seeing, పున: again, తత్ర there, పరమమ్ great, తప: austerities, ఆస్థిత: adopted.

There the golden Ganga wandered about for many years. Bhagiratha not finding Ganga, once again resorted to great penance.
అనేన తోషితశ్చాభూదత్యర్థం రఘునన్దన৷৷1.43.10৷৷

విససర్జ తతో గఙ్గాం హరో బిన్దుసర: ప్రతి.


రఘునన్దన O! Rama, అనేన by this penance, హర: Iswara, అత్యర్థమ్ immensely, తోషిత: అభూత్ was gratified, తత: afterwards, గఙ్గామ్ Ganga, బిన్దుసర: ప్రతి forming Bindusara, విససర్జ released (drop by drop).

O Son of the Raghus! (Rama) Siva was immensely pleased with the penace and thereafter released Ganga (drop by drop) forming Bindusara.
తస్యాం విసృజ్యమానాయాం సప్తస్రోతాంసి జజ్ఞిరే৷৷1.43.11৷৷

హ్లాదినీ పావనీ చైవ నలినీ చ తథాపరా.

తిస్ర: ప్రాచీం దిశం జగ్ము: గఙ్గాశ్శివజలాశ్శుభా:৷৷1.43.12৷৷


తస్యామ్ when that Ganga, విసృజ్యమానాయామ్ was being released, సప్త seven, స్రోతాంసి streams, జజ్ఞిరే were born, హ్లాదినీ Hladini, పావనీ Pavani, తథా and, అపరా another, నలినీ చ Nalini, శివజలా: possessing auspicious waters, తిస్ర: three, శుభా: auspicious, గఙ్గా: streams of Ganga, ప్రాచీమ్ దిశం eastwards, జగ్ము: had flowed.

As she (Ganga) was released, she branched out into seven streams. Three streams
known as Hladini, Pavani and Nalini having auspicious waters and conferring prosperity flowed eastwards.
సుచక్షుశ్చైవ సీతా చ సిన్ధుశ్చైవ మహానదీ.

తిస్రస్త్వేతా దిశం జగ్ము: ప్రతీచీం తు శుభోదకా:৷৷1.43.13৷৷


సుచక్షు: Suchakshu, సీతా చ Sita, సిన్ధు: called Sindhu, మహానదీ చ a great river, శుభోదకా: having auspicious waters, ఏతా: తిస్ర: these three, ప్రతీచీం దిశమ్ westwards, జగ్ము: had gone

Auspicious Suchakshu, Sita and a great river Sindhu, these three great rivers flowed westwards.
సప్తమీ చాన్వగాత్తాసాం భగీరథమథో నృపమ్.

భగీరథోపి రాజర్షిర్దివ్యం స్యన్దనమాస్థిత:৷৷1.43.14৷৷

ప్రాయాదగ్రే మహాతేజా గఙ్గా తం చాప్యనువ్రజత్.


అథః downwards, తాసామ్ among them, సప్తమీ seventh, భగీరథమ్ Bhagiratha, నృపమ్ king, అన్వగాత్ followed, మహాతేజాః most brilliant, రాజర్షి: royal sage, భగీరథోపి Bhagiratha also, దివ్యమ్ divine, స్యన్దనమ్ chariot, ఆస్థిత: mounting, అగ్రే ప్రాయాత్ marched forward, గఙ్గా చ Ganga, అనువ్రజత్ followed.

The seventh stream among them followed Bhagiratha. The most brilliant rajarshi Bhagiratha also mounting on divine chariot raced forward and Ganga followed him.
గగనాచ్ఛఙ్కరశిరస్తతో ధరణిమాశ్రితా৷৷1.43.15 ৷৷

వ్యసర్పత జలం తత్ర తీవ్రశబ్దపురస్కృతమ్.


గగనాత్ from sky, శఙ్కరశిర: on the head of Shankara, తత: from there, ధరణిమ్ earth, ఆశ్రితా resorted, తత్ర there, జలమ్ waters, తీవ్రశబ్దపురస్కృతమ్ culminating in intense sounds, వ్యసర్పత had flown.

From the sky on to the head of Shankara and thence Ganga resorted to the earth. There it flowed forward with a roaring sound.
మత్స్యకచ్ఛపసఙ్ఘైశ్చ శింశుమారగణైస్తదా৷৷1.43.16৷৷

పతద్భి: పతితైశ్చాన్యైర్వ్యరోచత వసున్ధరా.


తదా then, వసున్ధరా earth, పతితై: by the fallen, పతద్భిశ్చ by the falling, మత్స్యకచ్ఛపసఙ్ఘైశ్చ by shoals of fish, turtles, శింశుమారగణైశ్చ by multitudes of sea animals, అన్యై: by other animals, వ్యరోచత shone.

Then the earth looked bright with the fallen and falling shoals of fish, turtles and multitudes of other sea-animals.
తతో దేవర్షిగన్ధర్వా యక్షసిద్ధగణాస్తదా৷৷1.43.17৷৷

వ్యలోకయన్త తే తత్ర గగనాద్గాం గతాం తథా.


తత: then, దేవర్షిగన్ధర్వా: devarshis, gandharvas, యక్ష: yakshas, తే సిద్ధగణా: those hosts of siddhas, తదా then, తథా in that way, గగనాత్ from the sky, గామ్ the earth, గతామ్ reached, వ్యలోకయన్త looked on with astonishment.

Then devarshis, gandharvas, yakshas and hosts of siddhas looked on with astonishment at Ganga falling from the sky and descending on the earth.
విమానైర్నగరాకారైర్హయైర్గజవరైస్తదా৷৷1.43.18৷৷

పారిప్లవగతైశ్చాపి దేవతాస్తత్ర విష్ఠితా:.


తదా then, దేవతా: devatas, నగరాకారై: as large as cities, విమానై: aerial chariots, పారిప్లవగతై: in restless movements, హయై: by horses, గజవరై: by excellent elephants, తత్ర there, విష్ఠితా: were stationed.

Then, gods in a state of excitement in their aerial chariots as large as cities, on horses and on big elephants were stationed there (in the sky).
తదద్భుతతమం లోకే గఙ్గాపతనముత్తమమ్৷৷1.43.19৷৷

దిదృక్షవో దేవగణా: సమీయురమితౌజస:.


లోకే In this world, అద్భుతతమం most wonderful, ఉత్తమమ్ great, గఙ్గాపతనమ్ descent of Ganga, దిదృక్షవ: desirous of witnessing, అమితౌజస: beings with great lustre, దేవగణా: hosts of devatas, సమీయు: arrived.

Gods with great lustre arrived to witness the most wonderful, grand descent of Ganga.
సమ్పతద్భిస్సురగణైస్తేషాం చాభరణౌజసా৷৷1.43.20৷৷

శతాదిత్యమివాభాతి గగనం గతతోయదమ్.


గతతోయదమ్ devoid of clouds, గగనమ్ sky, సమ్పతద్భి: by those arriving with speed, సురగణై: by multitudes of devatas, తేషామ్ ఆభరణౌజసా with the effulgence of their ornaments, శతాదిత్యమివ hundred suns, ఆభాతి shines (at that moment).

The cloudless sky shone with the radiance of the ornaments of the gods alighting speedily to witness Ganga. It appeared as though the sky was filled with a hundred Suns.
శింశుమారోరగగణైర్మీనైరపి చ చఞ్చలై:৷৷1.43.21৷৷

విద్యుద్భిరివ విక్షిప్తమాకాశమభవత్తదా.


తదా then, శింశుమారోరగగణై: by multitudes of sea animals and serpents, చఞ్చలై: which had fickle movements, మీనైరపి చ with the fish also, ఆకాశమ్ the sky, విద్యుద్భిః with flashes of lightening, విక్షిప్తమివ as if scattered, అభవత్ became.

The sky strewn with lightnings appeared as if it was inhabited by sea-animals, serpents and fishes fickle.
పాణ్డరైస్సలిలోత్పీడై: కీర్యమాణైస్సహస్రధా৷৷1.43.22৷৷

శారదాభ్రైరివాకీర్ణం గగనం హంససమ్ప్లవై:.


సహస్రధా in thousand ways, కీర్యమాణై: scattered, పాణ్డరై: by the white, సలిలోత్పీడై: foams of water, గగనమ్ sky, హంససమ్ప్లవై: with flocks of swans, శారదాభ్రై: by autumnal clouds, అకీర్ణమివ as if spread over.

White foams of water were scattered in a thousand ways. It appeared as if the sky was spread over with autumnal clouds flocks of swans.
క్వచిద్ద్రుతతరం యాతి కుటిలం క్వచిదాయతమ్৷৷1.43.23৷৷

వినతం క్వచిదుద్ధూతం క్వచిద్యాతి శనైశ్శనై:.


క్వచిత్ at some places, ద్రుతతరమ్ very rapidly, యాతి it was flowing, క్వచిత్ at some other places, కుటిలమ్ యాతి flowing in curved ways, క్వచిత్ at some other places, ఆయతమ్ it was wide, క్వచిత్ at some places, వినతమ్ inclined, క్వచిత్ at some places, ఉధ్దూతమ్ was rising high, క్వచిత్ at some places, శనై: శనై: very slowly, యాతి flowing.

Ganga was flowing now rapid, now slow, now wide, now meandering, now low, now high.
సలిలేనైవ సలిలం క్వచిదభ్యాహతం పున:৷৷1.43.24৷৷

ముహురూర్ధ్వముఖం గత్వా పపాత వసుధాతలమ్.


క్వచిత్ at some places, సలిలమ్ water, సలిలేనైవ with waters alone, అభ్యాహతమ్ was dashing against, ముహు: repeatedly, ఊర్ధ్వముఖమ్ upwards, గత్వా having gone, పున: again, వసుధాతలమ్ on the ground, పపాత fell down.

Sometimes waves dashed against waves. They rose repeatedly upwards and fell down on the ground.
తచ్ఛఙ్కరశిరోభ్రష్టం భ్రష్టం భూమితలే పున:৷৷1.43.25৷৷

వ్యరోచత తదా తోయం నిర్మలం గతకల్మషమ్.


శఙ్కరశిరోభ్రష్టమ్ descended on the Shankara's head, పున: again, భూమితలే on the earth, భ్రష్టమ్ fallen, గతకల్మషమ్ freed from impurities, నిర్మలమ్ pure, తత్ తోయమ్ those waters, తదా then, వ్యరోచత looked splendid.

The waters of Ganga descended on Shankara's head and from there to the earth. Freed from all impurities, the waters looked pure and clean.
తత్ర దేవర్షిగన్ధర్వా వసుధాతలవాసిన:৷৷1.43.26৷৷

భవాఙ్గపతితం తోయం పవిత్రమితి పస్పృశు:.


తత్ర there, దేవర్షిగన్ధర్వా: devatas, rishis and gandharvas, వసుధాతలవసిన: those living on the earth, భవాఙ్గపతితమ్ fallen from the body of Siva, తోయమ్ waters, పవిత్రమితి sacred, పస్పృశు: touched.

Considering the waters fallen from the head of Siva sacred, devatas, rishis and gandharvas and those living on earth touched it (with reverence).
శాపాత్ప్రపతితా యే చ గగనాద్వసుధాతలమ్৷৷1.43.27৷৷

కృత్వా తత్రాభిషేకం తే బభూవుర్గతకల్మషా:.


యే చ those, శాపాత్ due to the curse, గగనాత్ from the sky, వసుధాతలమ్ earth, ప్రపతితా: had fallen, తే they, తత్ర there, అభిషేకమ్ bath, కృత్వా having taken, గతకల్మషా: బభూవు: were absolved of their sins.

Those cursed to fall from heaven to earth were absolved of their sins after bathing there (in the waters of Ganga).
ధూతపాపా: పునస్తేన తోయేనాథ సుభాస్వతా৷৷1.43.28৷৷

పునరాకాశమావిశ్య స్వాన్ లోకాన్ ప్రతిపేదిరే.


తేన by that, సుభాస్వతా excellently shining, తోయేన waters, ధూతపాపా: cleansed of their sins, పున: again, ఆకాశమ్ sky, ఆవిశ్య having entered, అథ thereafter, పున: again, స్వాన్ their own, లోకాన్ celestial worlds, ప్రతిపేదిరే attained.

Cleansed of their sins by the sparkling waters, they ascended through the sky once
again to their own (celestial) worlds.
ముముదే ముదితో లోకస్తేన తోయేన భాస్వతా৷৷1.43.29৷৷

కృతాభిషేకో గఙ్గాయాం బభూవ విగతక్లమ:.


లోక: people, భాస్వతా by the shining, తేన that, తోయేన by waters, ముముదే rejoiced, ముదిత: pleased, గఙ్గాయామ్ in that Ganga, కృతాభిషేక: having performed bath, విగతక్లమ: బభూవ were removed of fatigue.

People rejoiced at the sight of those shining waters. They were happy to have a dip in Ganga and their fatigue was gone.
భగీరథోపి రాజార్షిర్దివ్యం స్యన్దనమాస్థిత:.

ప్రాయాదగ్రే మహాతేజాస్తం గఙ్గా పృష్ఠతోన్వగాత్৷৷1.43.30.


మహాతేజా: most brilliant, రాజర్షి: royal sage, భగీరథోపి Bhagiratha also, దివ్యమ్ divine, స్యన్దనమ్ chariot, ఆస్థిత: mounting, అగ్రే ప్రాయాత్ marched forward, గఙ్గా చ Ganga, తమ్ him, పృష్ఠత: from behind, అన్వగాత్ followed.

Most brilliant rajarshi Bhagiratha also mounting the divine chariot moved forward and Ganga followed him.
దేవాస్సర్షిగణా: సర్వే దైత్యదానవరాక్షసా:৷৷1.43.31৷৷

గన్ధర్వయక్షప్రవరాస్సకిన్నరమహోరగా:.

సర్వాశ్చాప్సరసో రామ భగీరథరథానుగామ్৷৷1.43.32৷৷

గఙ్గామన్వగమన్ ప్రీతాస్సర్వే జలచరాశ్చ యే.


రామ O! Rama, సర్షిగణా: with hosts of Saints, దేవా: devatas, సర్వే all, దైత్యదానవరాక్షసా: daityas, danavas, rakshasas, సకిన్నరమహోరగా: with kinnaras, serpents, గన్ధర్వయక్షప్రవరా: foremost of gandharvas, yakshas, సర్వా: all, అప్సరస: apsaras, భగీరథరథానుగామ్ following the chariot of Bhagiratha, గఙ్గామ్ Ganga, అన్వగమన్ followed, యే జలచరాశ్చ those acquatic creatures, సర్వే all (followed ).

O Rama! besides acquatic beings, rishis, devatas, daityas, danavas, rakshasas along with kinnaras, serpents, foremost of gandharvas, yakshas and apsaras all followed the chariot of Bhagiratha. They were happy to follow Ganga.
యతో భగీరథో రాజా తతో గఙ్గాయశస్వినీ৷৷1.43.33৷৷

జగామ సరితాం శ్రేష్ఠా సర్వపాపప్రణాశినీ.


రాజా king, భగీరథ: Bhagiratha, యత: wherever, యశస్వినీ renowned, సరితాం శ్రేష్ఠా foremost of rivers, సర్వపాపప్రణాశినీ destroyer of all sins, గఙ్గా Ganga, తత: in the same direction, జగామ flowed.

Ganga, famous and foremost of rivers, destroyer of all sins, flowed in the direction king Bhagiratha moved.
తతో హి యజమానస్య జహ్నోరద్భుతకర్మణ:৷৷1.43.34৷৷

గఙ్గా సమ్ప్లావయామాస యజ్ఞవాటం మహాత్మన:.


తత: subsequently, గఙ్గా Ganga, యజమానస్య of the performer of sacrifice, అద్భుతకర్మణ: of great deeds, మహాత్మన: of the eminent, జహ్నో: of sage Jahnu, యజ్ఞవాటమ్ sacrificial ground, సమ్ప్లావయామాస inundated.

Then while Ganga was flowing, it inundated the sacrificial ground of the great sage Jahnu. Jahnu who used to work wonders was performing a sacrifice.
తస్యావలేపనం జ్ఞాత్వా క్రుద్ధో యజ్వా తు రాఘవ!৷৷1.43.35৷৷

అపిబచ్చ జలం సర్వం గఙ్గాయా: పరమాద్భుతమ్.


రాఘవ O! Rama, యజ్వా the performer of the sacrifice, sage Jahnu, తస్యా: her, అవలేపనమ్ pride, జ్ఞాత్వా having known, క్రుధ్ద: furious with anger, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, సర్వమ్ entire, జలమ్ waters, పరమాద్భుతమ్ astonishingly, అపిబత్ drank.

O Descendant of the Raghu dynasty! sage Jahnu who was performing the sacrifice, observed her pride and grew furious. And astonishingly drank the entire waters of Ganga.
తతో దేవాస్సగన్ధర్వా ఋషయశ్చ సువిస్మితా:৷৷1.43.36৷৷

పూజయన్తి మహాత్మానం జహ్నుం పురుషసత్తమమ్.

గఙ్గాం చాపి నయన్తి స్మ దుహితృత్వే మహాత్మన:৷৷1.43.37৷৷


తత: afterwards, సగన్ధర్వా: along with gandharvas, దేవా: devatas, ఋషయశ్చ rishis, సువిస్మితా: highly amazed, పురుషసత్తమమ్ best amog men, మహాత్మానమ్ eminent, జహ్నుమ్ sage Jahnu, పూజయన్తి worshipped, గఙ్గాం చ Ganga also, మహాత్మన: illustrious Juhnu's, దుహితృత్వే as daughter, నయన్తి considered.

Devatas, rishis and gandharvas stood amazed (at this act). They worshipped the magnanimous Jahnu, noblest among men. The devatas entreated the illustrious Jahnu to treat Ganga as his daughter.
తతస్తుష్టో మహాతేజాశ్శ్రోత్రాభ్యామసృజత్ పున:৷৷1.43.38৷৷

తస్మాజ్జహ్నుసుతా గఙ్గా ప్రోచ్యతే జాహ్నవీతిచ.


తత: thence, తుష్ట: highly pleased, మహాతేజా: highly lustrous Jahnu, పున: again, శ్రోత్రాభ్యామ్ from both his ears, అసృజత్ released, తస్మాత్ therefore, గఙ్గా Ganga, జహ్నుసుతా daughter of Jahnu, జాహ్నవీతి Jahnavi, ప్రోచ్యతే is being called.

The brilliant (Jahnu) was pleased. He released her through both his both ears. Hence Ganga is called Jahnavi, daughter of Jahnu.
జగామ చ పునర్గఙ్గా భగీరథరథానుగా.

సాగరం చాపి సమ్ప్రాప్తా సా సరిత్ప్రవరా తదా৷৷1.43.39৷৷

రసాతలముపాగచ్ఛత్సిద్ధ్యర్థం తస్య కర్మణ:.


గఙ్గా Ganga, పున: again, భగీరథరథానుగా following the chariot of Bhagiratha, జగామ had proceeded, తదా then, సా she, సరిత్ప్రవరా best among rivers, Ganga, సాగరమ్ ocean, సమ్ప్రాప్తా అపి having reached also, తస్య కర్మణ: of his desires, సిద్ధ్యర్థమ్ forfulfillment, రసాతలమ్ nether regions, ఉపాగచ్ఛత్ reached.

Ganga, best among rivers, following the chariot of Bhagiratha, reached the ocean. She entered the nether regions of the earth in order to fulfil his mission (salvation of the sons of Sagara).
భగీరథోపి రాజర్షి: గఙ్గామాదాయ యత్నత:.

పితామహాన్ భస్మకృతానపశ్యద్దీనచేతన:৷৷1.43.40৷৷


రాజర్షి: royal saint, భగీరథోపి Bhagiratha also, యత్నత: with supreme efforts, గఙ్గామ్ Ganga, ఆదాయ having brought, దీనచేతన: with grieved mind, భస్మకృతాన్ reduced to ashes, పితామహాన్ grand fathers, అపశ్యత్ beheld.

Rajarshi Bhagiratha, having brought Ganga with supreme efforts, saw with a sad heart his grandfathers reduced to ashes.
అథ తద్భస్మనాం రాశిం గఙ్గాసలిలముత్తమమ్.

ప్లావయద్ధూతపాప్మానస్స్వర్గం ప్రాప్తా రఘూత్తమ!৷৷1.43.41৷৷


రఘూత్తమ O! Rama, అథ thereafter, ఉత్తమమ్ excellent, గఙ్గాసలిలమ్ waters of Ganga, తత్ భస్మనామ్ those ashes, రాశిమ్ heap, ప్లావయత్ inundated, ధూతపాపా: purged of sins, స్వర్గమ్ heaven, ప్రాప్తా: obtained.

O Best of the Raghus! thereafter the holy waters of Ganga inundated those heaps of ashes and the sons of Sagara, purged of their sins, reached heaven" (said Viswamitra).
