[King Bhagiratha performs funeral rites of his ancestors.]
స గత్వా సాగరం రాజా గఙ్గయానుగతస్తదా .
ప్రవివేశ తలం భూమేర్యత్ర తే భస్మసాత్కృతా:৷৷1.44.1৷৷

స: రాజా that king, తదా then, గఙ్గయా by Ganga, అనుగత: followed by, సాగరమ్ ocean, గత్వా having gone, యత్ర where, తే they (sons of Sagara), భస్మసాత్ into ashes, కృతా: had been made, భూమే: earth's, తలమ్ lower regions, ప్రవివేశ entered.
Thereupon that king followed by Ganga reached the ocean and entered the lower regions of the earth where the sons of Sagara were found reduced to ashes.
భస్మన్యథాప్లుతే రామ గఙ్గాయాస్సలిలేన వై.
సర్వలోకప్రభుర్బ్రహ్మా రాజానమిదమబ్రవీత్৷৷1.44.2৷৷

అథ then, భస్మని when the ashes, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, సలిలేన with waters, ఆప్లుతే were inundated, సర్వలోకప్రభు: lord of the world, బ్రహ్మా Brahma, రాజానమ్ addressing the king, ఇదమ్ అబ్రవీత్ spoke these words.
After the ashes were inundated by the waters of Ganga, Brahma, lord of the world, appeared before king Bhagiratha and said:
తారితా నరశార్దూల దివం యాతాశ్చ దేవవత్.
షష్ఠి: పుత్రసహస్రాణి సగరస్య మహాత్మన:৷৷1.44.3৷৷

నరశార్దూల O! Best among men, మహాత్మన: of the illustrious, సగరస్య Sagara's, షష్టి: sixty పుత్రసహస్రాణి thousand sons, తారితా: were liberated, దేవవత్ like devatas, దివమ్ towards heaven, యాతా: had gone.
"O Tiger among men! sixty thousand sons of illustrious Sagara having been liberated, had gone towards heaven like devatas.
సాగరస్య జలం లోకే యావత్స్థాస్యతి పార్థివ!.
సగరస్యాత్మజాస్తావత్స్వర్గే స్థాస్యన్తి దేవవత్৷৷1.44.4৷৷

పార్థివ O! King, సాగరస్య ocean's, జలమ్ waters, లోకే in this world, యావత్ as long as, స్థాస్యతి remain, తావత్ till such time, సగరస్య ఆత్మజా: sons of Sagara, దేవవత్ like devatas, స్వర్గే in heavens, స్థాస్యన్తి will stay.
O King! as long as the waters in the ocean exist in this world, shall the sons of Sagara, live in heavens like gods.
ఇయం చ దుహితా జ్యేష్ఠా తవ గఙ్గా భవిష్యతి .
త్వత్కృతేన చ నామ్నాథ లోకే స్థాస్యతి విశ్రుతా৷৷1.44.5৷৷
త్వత్కృతేన చ నామ్నాథ లోకే స్థాస్యతి విశ్రుతా৷৷1.44.5৷৷
ఇయమ్ this, గఙ్గా Ganga, తవ your, జ్యేష్ఠా eldest, దుహితా daughter, భవిష్యతి will become, అథ from now onwards, త్వత్కృతేన formed out of your, నామ్నా name, లోకే in this world, విశ్రుతా well-known, స్థాస్యతి will stay on.
This Ganga will become your eldest daughter and from now on she will be well-known in this world (as Bhagirathi) after your name.
గఙ్గా త్రిపథగా రాజన్ దివ్యా భాగీరథీతి చ.

రాజన్ O! King, దివ్యా divine, గఙ్గా Ganga, త్రిపథగా known as Tripathaga, భాగీరథీతి చ also as Bhagirathi, త్రీన్ in three, పథ: paths, భావయన్తీ ఇతి since she covers by flowing and purifying, తత: therefore, త్రిపథగా Tripathaga, స్మృతా has been known as.
O King! divine Ganga will be called Tripathaga as well as Bhagirathi. Since she flows in the three worlds (heaven, earth and the lower world: Patala), she will be known as
Tripathaga.
పితామహానాం సర్వేషాం త్వమత్ర మనుజాధిప! .
కురుష్వ సలిలం రాజన్! ప్రతిజ్ఞామపవర్జయ৷৷1.44.7৷৷

మనుజాధిప! O! Lord of men, రాజన్ O! King, త్వమ్ you, అత్ర here, సర్వేషామ్ for all, పితామహానామ్ ancestors, సలిలం offerings with waters, కురుష్వ perform, ప్రతిజ్ఞామ్ your vow, అపవర్జయ fulfil.
O Lord of men! O King! you may offer the waters of Ganga here to all your ancestors and thereby fulfil your vow.
పూర్వకేణ హి తే రాజంస్తేనాతియశసా తదా.
ధర్మిణాం ప్రవరేణాపి నైష ప్రాప్తో మనోరథ:৷৷1.44.8৷৷

రాజన్ O! King, తే your, పూర్వకేణ ancestor, అతియశసా by the highly renowned, ధర్మిణామ్ among righteous ones, ప్రవరేణా foremost, తేనాపి even by him, తదా then, ఏష: this, మనోరథ: desire, న ప్రాప్త: was not obtained.
O King! by the highly renowned ancestors of yours, the foremost among righteous ones (even Sagara) this desire has not been fulfilled.
తథైవాంశుమతా తాత! లోకేప్రతిమతేజసా.
గఙ్గాం ప్రార్థయతానేతుం ప్రతిజ్ఞా నాపవర్జితా৷৷1.44.9৷৷
గఙ్గాం ప్రార్థయతానేతుం ప్రతిజ్ఞా నాపవర్జితా৷৷1.44.9৷৷
తాత O! Child, తథైవ similarly, లోకే in this world, అప్రతిమతేజసా by the one possessing unparalleled prowess, గఙ్గామ్ Ganga, ఆనేతుమ్ for bringing, ప్రార్థయతా cherished, అంశుమతా by Anshuman's, ప్రతిజ్ఞా vow, నాపవర్జితా could not be completed.
O Child! similarly though Anshuman possessed unparalleled prowess in this world his prayer to Ganga, his vow could not be fulfilled.
రాజర్షిణా గుణవతా మహర్షిసమతేజసా.
మత్తుల్యతపసా చైవ క్షత్రధర్మస్థితేన చ৷৷1.44.10৷৷
దిలీపేన మహాభాగ! తవ పిత్రాతి తేజసా.
పునర్న శఙ్కితానేతుం గఙ్గాం ప్రార్థయతానఘ!৷৷1.44.11৷৷
మత్తుల్యతపసా చైవ క్షత్రధర్మస్థితేన చ৷৷1.44.10৷৷
దిలీపేన మహాభాగ! తవ పిత్రాతి తేజసా.
పునర్న శఙ్కితానేతుం గఙ్గాం ప్రార్థయతానఘ!৷৷1.44.11৷৷
అనఘ O! Sinless one, మహాభాగ O! Blessed one, రాజార్షిణా by the royal saint, గుణవతా virtuous, మహర్షిసమతేజసా possessing the splendour of a maharshi, మత్తుల్యతపసా equal to me in austerities, క్షత్రధర్మస్థితేన abiding in the duties of a Kshatriya, అతితేజసా by the highly lustrous, గఙ్గామ్ Ganga, ప్రార్థయతా beseeching, తవ your, పిత్రా by father, దిలీపేన by Dilipa, మహాభాగ O! Distinguished one, ఆనేతుం పున: for bringing, న శఙ్కితా it was not made possible.
O Sinless one (Bhagiratha)! O Distinguished one! on the part of Dilipa brilliant your father who had the virtuous of a rajarshi, who was equal to a maharshi in splendour, and to me in austerities and abiding to the duties of a kshatriya it was even not possible to bring Ganga through prayer.
సా త్వయా సమనుక్రాన్తా ప్రతిజ్ఞా పురుషర్షభ!.
ప్రాప్తోసి పరమం లోకే యశ: పరమసమ్మతమ్৷৷1.44.12৷৷

పురుషర్షభ O! Best among men, సా ప్రతిజ్ఞా that vow, త్వయా by you, సమనుక్రాన్తా has been kept up, లోకే in this world, పరమసమ్మతమ్ highly acceptable, పరమమ్ supreme, యశ: fame, ప్రాప్త: అసి you have obtained.
O Best among men! you have fulfilled that vow. You have achieved supreme renown
and reverence in this world.
యచ్చ గఙ్గావతరణం త్వయా కృతమరిన్దమ.
అనేన చ భవాన్ ప్రాప్తో ధర్మస్యాయతనం మహత్৷৷1.44.13৷৷
అనేన చ భవాన్ ప్రాప్తో ధర్మస్యాయతనం మహత్৷৷1.44.13৷৷
అరిన్దమ O! Destroyer of enemies, త్వయా by you, యత్ since, గఙ్గావతరణమ్ descent of Ganga, కృతమ్ has been materialised, అనేన by this, భవాన్ you, ధర్మస్య of dharma, మహత్ great, ఆయతనమ్ sacred place, ప్రాప్త: have obtained.
O Destroyer of enemies! by bringing about the descent of Ganga, you have secured a great abode in dharma.
ప్లావయస్వ త్వమాత్మానం నరోత్తమ! సదోచితే.
సలిలే పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర! శుచి: పుణ్యఫలో భవ৷৷1.44.14৷৷

నరోత్తమ O! Best among men, పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర O! Tiger among men, ఉచితే in a befitting, సలిలే waters, సదా always, త్వమ్ you, ఆత్మానమ్ yourself, ప్లావయస్వ take bath by dipping and floating later, శుచి: purifying yourself, పుణ్యఫల: భవ acquire holiness.
O Best among men! O Tiger among men! take a dip in the eternally sacred waters, purify yourself and acquire holiness.
పితామహానాం సర్వేషాం కురుష్వ సలిలక్రియామ్.
స్వస్తి తేస్తు గమిష్యామి స్వం లోకం గమ్యతాం నృప!৷৷1.44.15৷৷
స్వస్తి తేస్తు గమిష్యామి స్వం లోకం గమ్యతాం నృప!৷৷1.44.15৷৷
సర్వేషాం for all, పితామహానామ్ forefathers, సలిలక్రియామ్ rites with waters, కురుష్వ perform, తే to you, స్వస్తి safety, గమిష్యామి I shall go, నృప O! King, స్వం లోకమ్ towards your region, గమ్యతామ్ you shall go.
O King! perform the rites of all your forefathers with the waters (of Ganga), farewell. I shall return to my world (now). Go back, O King" (said Grandsire)!
భగీరథోపి రాజర్షి: కృత్వా సలిలముత్తమమ్.
యథాక్రమం యథాన్యాయం సాగరాణాం మహాయశా:৷৷1.44.17৷৷
కృతోదకశ్శుచీ రాజా స్వపురం ప్రవివేశ హ.
సమృద్ధార్థో రఘుశ్రేష్ఠ స్వరాజ్యం ప్రశశాస హ৷৷1.44.18৷৷
యథాక్రమం యథాన్యాయం సాగరాణాం మహాయశా:৷৷1.44.17৷৷
కృతోదకశ్శుచీ రాజా స్వపురం ప్రవివేశ హ.
సమృద్ధార్థో రఘుశ్రేష్ఠ స్వరాజ్యం ప్రశశాస హ৷৷1.44.18৷৷
రాజర్షి: royal saint, మహాయశా: highly famous, రాజా king, భగీరథోపి Bhagiratha also, యథాక్రమమ్ following proper order, యథాన్యాయమ్ following the tradition, సాగరాణామ్ for the sons of Sagara, ఉత్తమమ్ highest, సలిలమ్ rites with sacred water, కృత్వా having performed, కృతోదక: having performed ablutions, శుచి: a purified man, స్వపురమ్ his own city, ప్రవివేశ హ entered, రఘుశ్రేష్ఠ O! Rama, సమృద్ధార్థ: having fulfilled his desire, స్వరాజ్యమ్ his kingdom, ప్రశశాస హ ruled.
The illustrious rajarshi Bhagiratha, performed the rites of offering the sacred water of Ganga, in accordance with proper order and tradition for the sons of Sagara. Purified with the ablutions entered his own city." O Best of the Raghus! his desire thus fulfilled he continued to rule the kingdom thereafter".
ప్రముమోద హ లోకస్తం నృపమాసాద్య రాఘవ!.
నష్టశోకస్సమృద్ధార్థో బభూవ విగతజ్వర:৷৷1.44.19৷৷

రాఘవ O! Rama, తమ్ him, నృపమ్ as king, ఆసాద్య having obtained, లోక: the world, ప్రముమోద rejoiced, సమృద్ధార్థ: having achieved his desire, విగతజ్వర: freed from mental afflictions, నష్టశోక: with his sorrows mitigated, బభూవ became.
"O Best of the Raghus! the world rejoiced having Bhagiratha as king. With his purpose achieved, he was freed from all mental afflictions and sorrows and thereafter lived happily.
ఏష తే రామ గఙ్గాయా విస్తరోభిహితో మయా.
స్వస్తి ప్రాప్నుహి భద్రం తే సంధ్యాకాలోతివర్తతే৷৷1.44.20৷৷

రామ O! Rama, గఙ్గాయా: Ganga's, ఏష: this, విస్తర: detailed story, మయా by me, తే to you, అభిహిత: has been mentioned, స్వస్తి well-being to you, ప్రాప్నుహి you may receive, తే to you, భద్రమ్ prosperity, సంధ్యాకాల: evening time (proper for doing ablutions ), అతివర్తతే is passing by.
O Rama! I have related you the story of Ganga in detail. Evening time is passing by (and we shall perform the ablutions) farewell.
ధన్యం యశస్యమాయుష్యం పుత్ర్యం స్వర్గ్యమతీవ చ.
యశ్శ్రావయతి విప్రేషు క్షత్రియేష్వితరేషు చ৷৷1.44.21৷৷
ప్రీయన్తే పితరస్తస్య ప్రీయన్తే దైవతాని చ.
యశ్శ్రావయతి విప్రేషు క్షత్రియేష్వితరేషు చ৷৷1.44.21৷৷
ప్రీయన్తే పితరస్తస్య ప్రీయన్తే దైవతాని చ.
ధన్యమ్ conferring prosperity, యశస్యమ్ brings fame, ఆయుష్యమ్ confers longevity, పుత్ర్యమ్ is capable of leading to progeny, అతీవ very much, స్వర్గ్యమ్ leading to heaven, య: this story, విప్రేషు for brahmins, క్షత్రియేషు Kshatriyas, ఇతరేషు చ others also, శ్రావయతి relates, తస్య his, పితర: forefathers, ప్రీయన్తే would be pleased, దైవతాని చ devatas also, ప్రీయన్తే will be pleased.
He will be blessed with fame, longevity, progeny and (after death) heaven brahmins One who recites this story of Ganga to the kshatriyas and others, the gods and his forefathers would be pleased with him.

యశ్శృణోతి చ కాకుత్స్థ సర్వాన్ కామానవాప్నుయాత్.
సర్వే పాపా: ప్రణశ్యన్తి ఆయు: కీర్తిశ్చ వర్ధతే৷৷1.44.23৷৷
యశ్శృణోతి చ కాకుత్స్థ సర్వాన్ కామానవాప్నుయాత్.
సర్వే పాపా: ప్రణశ్యన్తి ఆయు: కీర్తిశ్చ వర్ధతే৷৷1.44.23৷৷
కాకుత్స్థ O! Rama, ఇదమ్ this, శుభమ్ sacred, గఙ్గావతరణమ్ relating to the descent of Ganga, ఆఖ్యానమ్ story, య: who, అవ్యగ్ర: with concentration of mind, శృణోతి listens, సర్వాన్ all, కామాన్ desires, అవాప్నుయాత్ he may obtain, సర్వే all, పాపా: sins, ప్రణశ్యన్తి are destroyed, ఆయు: longevity, కీర్తిశ్చ fame also, వర్ధతే will increase.
O Son of the Kakusthas! whosoever listens to this auspicious story relating to the descent of Ganga with concentration, all his desires will be achieved, his sins will be destroyed and his longevity and fame will increase".
