[Diti undergoes mortifications for the birth of a son with the consent of Kasyapa-- Indra serves her on an occasion when she was impure- enters her womb and severes the embryo into seven parts.]

హతేషు తేషు పుత్రేషు దితి: పరమదు:ఖితా.

మారీచం కాశ్యపం రామ భర్తారమిదమబ్రవీత్৷৷1.46.1৷৷


రామ O! Rama, తేషు పుత్రేషు when those sons, హతేషు were killed, దితి: Diti, పరమదు:ఖితా afflicted with great grief, భర్తారమ్ husband, మారీచమ్ Maricha, కాశ్యపమ్ Kasyapas's son, ఇదమ్ అబ్రవీత్ spoke these words.

"O Rama! Diti was afflicted with great grief when her sons were killed. She addressed her husband Kasyapa, son of Maricha", saying:
హతపుత్రాస్మి భగవంస్తవ పుత్రైర్మహాబలై:.

శక్రహన్తారమిచ్ఛామి పుత్రం దీర్ఘతపోర్జితమ్৷৷1.46.2৷৷


భగవన్ O! Adorable one, మహాబలై: by the highly powerful, పుత్రై: by your sons, devatas, హతపుత్రా అస్మి my sons have been killed, శక్రహన్తారమ్ capable of slaying Indra, దీర్ఘతపోర్జితమ్ acquire through long austerities, పుత్రమ్ mighty son, ఇచ్ఛామి I desire.

"O adorable one, your highly powerful sons, (devatas) have killed mine through extensive austerities. I am desirous of obtaining a (mighty) son capable of killing Indra.
సాహం తపశ్చరిష్యామి గర్భం మే దాతుమర్హసి.

ఈశ్వరం శక్రహన్తారం త్వమనుజ్ఞాతుమర్హసి৷৷1.46.3৷৷


సా అహమ్ I, తప: austerities, చరిష్యామి I shall practise, త్వమ్ you, ఈశ్వరమ్ a supreme ruler of the world, శుక్రహంతారమ్ capable of slaying Indra, గర్భమ్ embryo (son), మే to me, దాతుమ్ to give, అర్హసి behoves of you, అనుజ్ఞాతుమ్ to give consent, అర్హసి behoves.

I shall practise austerities. You ought to grant me a son who would be the supreme ruler of the world and capable of killing Indra. You can say yes (if you will)".
తస్యాస్తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా మారీచ: కాశ్యపస్తదా.

ప్రత్యువాచ మహాతేజా దితిం పరమదు:ఖితామ్৷৷1.46.4৷৷


తదా then, మారీచ: Maricha's son, మహాతేజా: exceedingly lustrous, కాశ్యప: Kashyapa, తస్యా: her, తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, పరమదుఖి:తామ్ deeply grieved, దితిమ్ addressing Diti, ప్రత్యువాచ replied.

Then, Maricha's son, exceedingly bright Kasyapa on hearing the words of Diti who was deeply grieved replied:
ఏవం భవతు, భద్రం తే శుచిర్భవ తపోధనే!.

జనయిష్యసి పుత్రం త్వం శక్రహన్తారమాహవే৷৷1.46.5৷৷


తపోధనే O! One having austerities as wealth, ఏవం భవతు 'Be it so', తే భద్రమ్ prosperity to you, శుచి: భవ become pure, త్వమ్ you, ఆహవే in the battle, శక్రహన్తారమ్ slayer of Indra, పుత్రమ్ son, జనయిష్యసి will give birth.

"O one vested with the wealth of austerities! be it so. Prosperity to you! Remain chaste, you will deliver a son who will kill Indra in the battle.
పూర్ణే వర్షసహస్రే తు శుచిర్యది భవిష్యసి.

పుత్రం త్రైలోక్యభర్తారం మత్తస్త్వం జనయిష్యసి৷৷1.46.6৷৷


త్వమ్ you, శుచి: భవిష్యసి యది if you remain pure and clean, వర్షసహస్రే thousand years, పూర్ణే after completion, మత్త: through me, త్రైలోక్యభర్తారమ్ lord of three worlds, పుత్రమ్ son, జనయిష్యసి will give birth.

"If you remain pure and clean, on completion of a thousand years you will give birth to a son through me who will be the lord of the three worlds".
ఏవముక్త్వా మహాతేజా: పాణినా స మమార్జ తామ్.

సమాలభ్య తతస్స్వస్తీత్యుక్త్వా స తపసే యయౌ৷৷1.46.7৷৷


మహాతేజా: highly energetic, స: Kasyapa, ఏవమ్ in this way, ఉక్త్వా having spoken, తామ్ her, పాణినా with his palm, మమార్జ touched her body gently stroking, సమాలభ్య having touched her, తత: then, స్వస్తి ఇతి "May good be with thee", ఉక్త్వా having spoken, స: Kashyapa, తపసే to perform austerities, యయౌ had gone.

Highly brilliant Kasyapa, having thus spoken, touched her gently with his palm, stroked her body and said, "May good betide thee". Having said this, Kasyapa went away to perform austerities.
గతే తస్మిన్నరశ్శ్రేష్ఠ దితి: పరమహర్షితా.

కుశప్లవనమాసాద్య తపస్తేపే సుదారుణమ్৷৷1.46.8৷৷


నరశ్శ్రేష్ఠ O! Foremost of men, తస్మిన్ when that Kasyapa, గతే (సతి) had gone, దితి: Diti, పరమహర్షితా was exceedingly delighted, కుశప్లవనమ్ sacred spot named Kushaplavana, ఆసాద్య having reached, సుదారుణమ్ intense, తప: mortifications, తేపే practised.

"O foremost among men! after Kasyapa had left, Diti exceedingly delighted (at the prospect of having sons) reached Kushaplavana, and practised intense mortifications.
తపస్తస్యాం హి కుర్వన్త్యాం పరిచర్యాం చకార హ.

సహస్రాక్షో నరశ్శ్రేష్ఠ పరయా గుణసమ్పదా৷৷1.46.9৷৷


నరశ్శ్రేష్ఠ O! Foremost of men, Rama, తస్యామ్ when she, తప: austerities, కుర్వన్త్యామ్ while doing, సహస్రాక్ష: thousand-eyed Indra, పరయా with great, గుణసమ్పదా treasure of virtues, పరిచర్యామ్ service, చకార had made.

O foremost of men great treasure of virtues! while she was practising austerities, the thousand-eyed Indra began to serve her.
అగ్నిం కుశాన్ కాష్ఠమప: ఫలం మూలం తథైవ చ.

న్యవేదయత్సహస్రాక్షో యచ్చాన్యదపి కాఙ్క్షితమ్৷৷1.46.10৷৷


సహస్రాక్ష: Devendra, అగ్నిమ్ fire, కుశాన్ Kusha grass, కాష్ఠమ్ sticks for burning, అప: water, ఫలమ్ fruits, తథైవ చ and, మూలమ్ roots, కాఙ్క్షితమ్ desired, అన్యత్ all other things, యచ్చ whichever, న్యవేదయత్ provided her.

The thousand-eyed Indra served her by providing fire, Kusha grass, sticks for burning,
water, fruits, roots and all other things desired by her.
గాత్రసంవహనశ్చైవ శ్రమాపనయనైస్తథా.

శక్రస్సర్వేషు కాలేషు దితిం పరిచచార హ ৷৷1.46.11৷৷


శక్ర: Devendra, గాత్రసంవహనై: చ ఏవ stroking her limbs gently to regain their suppleness, తథా and, శ్రమాపనయనై: alleviating her fatigue, సర్వేషు కాలేషు at all times, దితిమ్ Diti, పరిచచార హ attended on her.

Indra attended on Diti, stroking her limbs gently from time to time to help her regain their suppleness and alleviate her fatigue.
అథ వర్షసహస్రే తు దశోనే రఘునన్దన !.

దితి: పరమసమ్ప్రీతా సహస్రాక్షమథాబ్రవీత్৷৷1.46.12৷৷


రఘునన్దన O! Joy of Raghus, Rama, అథ thereafter, వర్షసహస్రే when thousand years, దశోనే short of ten, దితి: Diti, పరమసమ్ప్రీతా highly pleased, సహస్రాక్షమ్ addressing Indra, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.

O son of the Raghus! ten years before completion of a thousand years. Diti, highly pleased with the services rendered by Indra, addressed him", saying:
యాచితేన సురశ్రేష్ఠ తవ పిత్రా మహాత్మనా.

వరో వర్షసహస్రాన్తే దత్తో మమ సుతం ప్రతి৷৷1.46.13৷৷


సురశ్రేష్ఠ O! Excellent among devatas, Indra, యాచితేన having been sought, మహాత్మనా by the illustrious, తవ your, పిత్రా father, వర్షసహస్రాన్తే after completion of thousand years, సుతం ప్రతి about a son, మమ to me, వర: boon, దత్త: granted.

"O best of the gods! your illustrious father granted me a boon for a son I sought on completion of a thousand years (of penance).
తపశ్చరన్త్యా వర్షాణి దశ వీర్యవతాం వర!.

అవశిష్టాని భద్రం తే భ్రాతరం ద్రక్ష్యసే తత:৷৷1.46.14৷৷


వీర్యవతామ్ among those having prowess, వర excellent, తప: austerities, చరన్త్యా: performing, దశ ten, వర్షాణి years, అవశిష్టాని remaining, తత: afterwards, భ్రాతరమ్ brother, ద్రక్ష్యసే you will see, తే భద్రమ్ may prosperity to you.

O the best of the brave! ten years is yet to go (for completion of austerities). You will have a brother. May you prosper!
తమహం త్వత్కృతే పుత్ర సమాధాస్యే జయోత్సుకమ్.

త్రైలోక్యవిజయం పుత్ర సహ భోక్ష్యసి విజ్వర:৷৷1.46.15৷৷


పుత్ర O! Son, తమ్ him, త్వత్కృతే for you, జయోత్సుకమ్ having fortitude for victory, (అహం) సమాధాస్యే I shall unite him, పుత్ర O! Son, విజ్వర: relieved of grief, త్రైలోక్యవిజయమ్ victory over three worlds, సహ భోక్ష్యసి you will enjoy together with him.

O Child! I'll create in him eagerness victory. Together with him you will gain victory over the three worlds. Relieved of sorrows, enjoy you'll with him".
ఏవముక్త్వా దితిశ్శక్రం ప్రాప్తే మధ్యం దివాకరే.

నిద్రయాపహృతా దేవీ పాదౌ కృత్వాథ శీర్షత:৷৷1.46.16৷৷


దితి: దేవీ Diti devi, శక్రమ్ to Indra, ఏవమ్ in this way, ఉక్త్వా having spoken, దివాకరే when Sun, మధ్యమ్ mid-day, ప్రాప్తే having reached, అథ thereafter, పాదౌ feet, శీర్షత: head side, కృత్వా having placed, నిద్రయా by sleep, అపహృతా has been overcome.

After speaking thus to Indra, goddess Diti overpowered with sleep around mids-day dropped off, her feet towards her head.
దృష్ట్వా తామశుచిం శక్ర: పాదత: కృతమూర్ధజామ్.

శిరస్స్థానే కృతౌ పాదౌ జహాస చ ముమోద చ৷৷1.46.17৷৷


శక్ర: Indra, పాదత: towards her feet, కృతమూర్ధజామ్ with the hairs falling, అశుచిమ్ impure posture, తాం దృష్ట్వా having seen her, శిరస్స్థానే in the place where she should place her head, కృతై placed, పాదౌ feet (having seen), జహాస laughed, ముమోద చ was pleased.

Indra laughed. He rejoiced at the sight of her ominous posture of sleeping with her feet towards her head and her hair falling on her feet.
తస్యాశ్శరీరవివరం వివేశ చ పురన్దర:.

గర్భం చ సప్తధా రామ బిభేద పరమాత్మవాన్৷৷1.46.18৷৷


రామ O! Rama, పురన్దర: Indra, తస్యా: her, శరీరవివరం womb, వివేశ చ entered, పరమ్ great, ఆత్మవాన్ courageous one, గర్భమ్ embryo, సప్తధా seven pieces, బిభేద severed it.

O Rama! with great courage Indra entered her womb and severed her embryo into seven pieces.
భిద్యమానస్తతో గర్భో వజ్రేణ శతపర్వణా.

రురోద సుస్వరం రామ తతో దితిరబుధ్యత৷৷1.46.19৷৷


రామ O! Rama, తత: then, శతపర్వణా by the hundred edged, వజ్రేణ by Vajra, భిద్యమాన: being severed, గర్భ: embryo, సుస్వరమ్ at high pitch, రురోద cried, తత: then, దితి: Diti, అబుధ్యత woke up.

O Rama! that embryo, being severed by Vajra having a hundred edges, cried at high pitch which awakened Diti".
మా రుదో మా రుదశ్చేతి గర్భం శక్రోభ్యభాషత.

బిభేద చ మహాతేజా రుదన్తమపి వాసవ:৷৷1.46.20৷৷


మా రుద: "Do not weep", మా రుద: "Do not weep", ఇతి శక్ర: Indra, గర్భమ్ addressing embryo, అభ్యభాషత spoke, మహాతేజా: highly powerful, వాసవ: Indra, రుదన్తమపి even though crying, బిభేద severed it.

Highly powerful Indra, even while saying to the crying embryo "Do not weep, Do not weep" severed it.
న హన్తవ్యో న హన్తవ్య ఇత్యేవం దితిరబ్రవీత్.

నిష్పపాత తతశ్శక్రో మాతుర్వచనగౌరవాత్৷৷1.46.21৷৷


దితి Diti, న హన్తవ్య: "Sould not be killed", న హన్తవ్య:" should not be killed ", ఇత్యేవమ్ in this way, అబ్రవీత్ said, తత: subsequently, శక్ర: Indra, మాతు: వచనగౌరవాత్ in deference to the words of his mother, నిష్పపాత came out.

"Do not kill", "Do not kill", said Diti. Subsequently Indra, in deference to the words of his mother, emerged out of the womb.
ప్రాఞ్జలిర్వజ్రసహితో దితిం శక్రోభ్యభాషత.

అశుచిర్దేవి సుప్తాసి పాదయో: కృతమూర్ధజా৷৷1.46.22৷৷


వజ్రసహిత: armed with Vajra, శక్ర: Indra, ప్రాఞ్జలి: with folded palms, దితిమ్ Diti, అభ్యభాషత spoke, దేవి O! Devi, పాదయో: feet, కృతమూర్ధజా hairs falling( on her feet ), అశుచి: becoming impure, సుప్తా అసి slept.

Armed with Vajra, Indra addressed Diti with folded palms, saying, "O Devi! you have slept, with your head towards your feet and your hair falling on your feet".
తదన్తరమహం లబ్ధ్వా శక్రహన్తారమాహవే.

అభిదం సప్తధా దేవి తన్మే త్వం క్షన్తుమర్హసి৷৷1.46.23৷৷


అహమ్ I, తత్ that, అన్తరమ్ opportunity, లబ్ధ్వా having seized, ఆహవే in war, శక్రహన్తారమ్ that one who was to be slayer of Indra, సప్తధా into seven parts, అభిదమ్ severed, దేవి O! Devi, త్వమ్ you, క్షంతుమ్ to forgive, అర్హసి it is proper.

"I have seized the opportunity and severed into seven pieces the foetus who would have been a slayer of Indra. O Devi! shoudn't you forgive me"?
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే బాలకాణ్డే షట్చత్వారింశస్సర్గ:৷৷
