[Origin of maruts-Vishala constructs the city- Diti practises her austerities--Sumati honours Viswamitra.]

saptadhātu kṛtē garbhē diti: paramadu:khitā.

sahasrākṣaṅ durādharṣaṅ vākyaṅ sānunayā.bravīt৷৷1.47.1৷৷


garbhē when the embryo, saptadhā into seven pieces, kṛtē having been cut, diti: Diti, paramadu:khitā highly distressed, durādharṣam unassailable, sahasrākṣam Indra, sānunayā affectionate, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Deeply distressed Diti, having come to know that the embryo had been severed into seven pieces, humbly spoke to the unassailable Indra.
mamāparādhādgarbhō.yaṅ saptadhā viphalīkṛta:.

nāparādhō.sti dēvēśa! tavātra balasūdana!৷৷1.47.2৷৷


balasūdana O! Slayer of Balasura, dēvēśa! Devendra!, mama my, aparādhāt by the fault, ayam this, garbha: embryo, saptadhā into seven pieces, viphalīkṛta: rendered useless, atra in this matter, tava your, aparādha: fault, nāsti was not there.

"O Indra, Slayer of Balasura, because of my fault this embryo has been made into
seven pieces and rendered useless. In this matter you have not committed any fault.
priyaṅ tu kartumicchāmi mama garbhaviparyayē.

marutāṅ saptasaptānāṅ sthānapālā bhavantvimē৷৷1.47.3৷৷


garbhaviparyayē this misfortune to embryo, mama for me, priyam favour, kartum to do, icchāmi I am desiring, imē this, sapta seven pieces, saptānāṅ seven, marutām maruts, sthānapālā guardians of regions, bhavantu become.

This disaster to the embryo has happened contrary to expectations. Hence, I seek a favour from you. Let these seven pieces become seven guardians of marut regions (regions of the wind).
vātakandhā imē sapta carantu divi putraka .

mārutā iti vikhyātā divyarūpā mamātmajā:৷৷1.47.4৷৷


putraka O! Son, sapta seven, imē these, mama my, ātmajā: sons, divyarūpā: having celestial beauty, vātaskandhā: presiding deities for Vata Skandha (divisions of wind), mārutā: iti named Maruts, vikhyātā: well-known, divi in the sky (intermediate regions), carantu let them wander.

O! Son, all these seven are my sons of celestial beauty.They will become pesiding deities for Vata Skandha (divisions of wind) and let them be well-known as maruts wandering in the universe.
brahmalōkaṅ caratvēka indralōkaṅ tathā.para:.

divi vāyuriti khyātastṛtīyō.pi mahāyaśā:৷৷1.47.5৷৷


ēka: one, brahmalōkam in Brahma loka, caratu may move about, tathā similarly, apara: another, indralōkam Indra loka, mahāyaśā: highly renowned, tṛtīyō.pi third one, vāyuriti known as Vayu, khyāta: well-known, divi in this universe, move about.

Among them, one will move about in Brahmaloka, another in Indraloka, and the third, well known as vayu will move around in the sky.
catvārastu suraśrēṣṭha diśō vai tava śāsanāt.

sañcariṣyantu bhadraṅ tē dēvabhūtā mamātmajā:৷৷1.47.6৷৷


suraśrēṣṭha O! Best of devatas, catvāra: four, mama ātmajā: my sons, tava your, śāsanāt by command, dēvabhūtā: becoming celestial beings, diśa: directions, sañcariṣyantu may range about.

O best of devatas! by your command the other four sons will remain celestial, and will range about in four directions.
tasyāstadvacanaṅ śrutvā sahasrākṣa: purandara:.

uvāca prāñjalirvākyaṅ ditiṅ balaniṣūdana:৷৷1.47.7৷৷


sahasrākṣa: thousand-eyed, balaniṣūdana: slayer of Bala, purandara: Indra, tasyā: her, tat vacanam those words, śṛtvā having heard, prāñjali: with folded palms, ditim addressing Diti, vākyam these words, uvāca spoke.

The thousand-eyed Indra, slayer of Bala, on hearing Diti's words, addressed her with folded palms, saying:
sarvamētadyathōktaṅ tē bhaviṣyati na saṅśaya:.

vicariṣyanti bhadraṅ tē dēvabhūtāstavātmajā:৷৷1.47.8৷৷


tē to you, yathā as, uktam said, ētat sarvam all this, bhaviṣyati will take place, saṅśaya: doubt, na not there, tava your, ātmajā: sons, dēvabhūtā: like celestial beings, vicariṣyanti shall wander about, bhadram tē prosperity to you.

"Everything will, no doubt, happen the way you said. Your sons will wander about as celestial beings. Prosperity to you."
ēvaṅ tau niścayaṅ kṛtvā mātāputrau tapōvanē.

jagmatustridivaṅ rāma kṛtārthāviti naśśrutam৷৷1.47.9৷৷


rāma O! Rama, tau mātāputrau those mother and sons, ēvam in this way, niścayam conclusion, kṛtvā having arrived, kṛtārthau having fulfilled their desire, tridivam towords heaven, jagmatu: had gone, iti śrutam thus heard.

"O Rama! mother and sons having arrived at this conclusion in the tapovana ascended to heaven with their desire fulfilled. This is what we have heard."
ēṣa dēśassa kākutstha mahēndrādhyuṣita: purā.

ditiṅ yatra tapassiddhāmēvaṅ paricacāra sa:৷৷1.47.10৷৷


kākutstha O! Rama, ēṣa: this one, purā formerly, mahēndrādhyuṣita: inhabited by Indra, sa: that, dēśa: country, yatra where, sa: he, tapa: in austerities, siddhām succeded, ditim Diti, ēvam this way, paricacāra attended on.

"O Descendant of Kakustha (Rama)! this is that country which was formerly inhabited by Indra. Here Indra attended on Diti who achieved the fruit of her austerities.
ikṣvākō.stu naravyāghra putra: paramadhārmika:৷৷1.47.11৷৷

alambuṣāyāmutpannō viśāla iti viśruta:.

tēna cāsīdiha sthānē viśālēti purī kṛtā৷৷1.47.12৷৷


naravyāghra O! Tiger among men, Rama, ikṣvākō: for Ikshvaku, alambuṣāyām in Alambusa, paramadhārmika: highly virtuous, viśāla iti named Vishala, viśruta: well-known, putra: son, utpanna: was norn, tēna by him, iha here, sthānē in this place, viśālēti named as Vishala, purī city, kṛtā āsīt was built.

"O Tiger among men (Rama)! this highly virtuous and well-known son named Vishala was born to Ikshvakus in Alambusa. Where, a city named Vishala was built.
viśālasya sutō rāma hēmacandrō mahābala:.

sucandra iti vikhyāta: hēmacandrādanantara:৷৷1.47.13৷৷


rāma O! Rama, mahābala: mighty, hēmacandra: Hemachandra, viśālasya Vishala's, suta: son, hēmacandrāt from Hemachandra, anantara: his successor, sucandra iti as Suchandra, vikhyāta: celebrated one.

O Rama! mighty Hemachandra was Vishala's son. Hemachandra's successor was the celebrated Suchandra.
sucandratanayō rāma dhūmrāśva iti viśruta:.

dhūmrāśvatanayaścāpi sañjayassamapadyata৷৷1.47.14৷৷


rāma O! Rama, sucandratanaya: son of Suchandra, dhūmrāśva iti as Dhumraswa, viśruta: well-known, sañjaya: Sanjaya, dhūmrāśvatanaya: son of Dhumraswa, samapadyata was born.

O Rama! son of Suchandra was Dhumraswa, well-known Sanjaya was the son of Dhumraswa.
sañjayasya sutaśśrīmān sahadēva: pratāpavān.

kuśāśvassahadēvasya putra: paramadhārmika:৷৷1.47.15৷৷


śrīmān prosperous, pratāpavān powerful, sahadēva: Sahadeva, sañjayasya Sanjaya's, suta: son, paramadhārmika: highly virtuous, kuśāśva: Kusaswa, sahadēvasya Sahadeva's, putra: son.

Prosperous and powerful Sahadeva was Sanjaya's son. Highly virtuous Kusaswa was Sahadeva's son.
kuśāśvasya mahātējā sōmadatta: pratāpavān.

sōmadattasya putrastu kākutstha iti viśruta:৷৷1.47.16৷৷


mahātējā: highly lustrous, pratāpavān powerful, sōmadatta: Somadatta, kuśāśvasya Kusaswa's (son), sōmadattasya Somadatta's, putra: son, kākutstha: Kakutstha, iti viśruta: is well-known.

Brilliant and powerful Somadatta was Kusaswa's son. That Somadatta's son was Kakutstha is well-known.
tasya putrō mahātējā: sampratyēṣa purīmimām.

āvasatyamaraprakhyassumatirnāma durjaya:৷৷1.47.17৷৷


samprati now, imāṅ purīm in this city, tasya putra: son of Ikshvaku, mahātējā: heroic, amaraprakhya: equal to devatas, durjaya: invincible, sumatirnāma named Sumati, āvasati is living.

Son of Ikshvakus, Sumati comparable to devatas, invincible and exceedingly energetic is still ruling this city.
ikṣvākōstu prasādēna sarvē vaiśālikā nṛpā:.

dīrghāyuṣō mahātmānō vīryavantassudhārmikā:৷৷1.47.18৷৷


ikṣvākō: Ikshwaku's, prasādēna by his graciousness, vaiśālikā: relating to Vishala, nṛpā: kings, sarvē all, dīrghāyuṣa: possessing long-life, mahātmāna: exalted, vīryavanta: valourous, sudhārmikā: are virtuous.

By the grace of the Ikshvakus, all the kings of Vishala have been long lived and exalted, valiant and deeply religious.
ihādya rajanīṅ rāma sukhaṅ vatsyāmahē vayam.

śva: prabhātē naraśrēṣṭha janakaṅ draṣṭumarhasi৷৷1.47.19৷৷


rāma O! Rama, adya today, rajanīm night, vayam we, iha here, sukham happily, vatsyāmahē will stay on, naraśrēṣṭha O! Best among men, śva: tomorrow, prabhātē early morning, janakam Janaka, draṣṭum to see, arhasi fit and proper.

O Rama! we shall spend the right happily here. O Best among men! On the tomorrow we see Janaka".
sumatistu mahātējā viśvāmitramupāgatam.

śrutvā naravaraśrēṣṭha: pratyudgacchanmahāyaśā:৷৷1.47.20৷৷


mahātējā: most brilliant, mahāyaśā: man of immense renown, naravaraśrēṣṭha: chief of men, sumatistu king Sumati, viśvāmitram Visvamitra, upāgatam arrived, śrutvā having heard, pratyudgacchat went forward (to receive him).

Having heard of the arrival of Viswamitra the celebrated Sumati, most brilliant chief of kings proceeded (to receive him).
pūjāṅ ca paramāṅ kṛtvā sōpādhyāyassabāndhava:.

prāñjali: kuśalaṅ pṛṣṭvā viśvāmitramathābravīt৷৷1.47.21৷৷


sōpādhyāya: with spiritual preceptors, sabāndhava: together with his relatives, paramām supreme, pūjām honours, kṛtvā having performed, prāñjali: with folded palms, kuśalam welfare, pṛṣṭvā having enquired, atha thereafter, viśvāmitram addressing Visvamitra, abravīt spoke.

Along with his spiritual preceptors and relatives he paid Viswamitra great respect,
enquired his well-being and said:
dhanyō.smyanugṛhītō.smi yasya mē viṣayaṅ muni:.

samprāptō darśanaṅ caiva nāsti dhanyatarō mama৷৷1.47.22৷৷


yasya mē my, viṣayam country, muni: Muni (you), samprāpta: has visited, darśanam caiva having graced all of us, dhanya: asmi blessed am I, anugṛhīta: asmi I am ( highly )favoured, mama for me, na asti dhanyatara: there is none more blessed than me.

"O Sage! no one is more blessed than me since you have favoured me with your arrival in my country."
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē saptacatvāriṅśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the fortyseventh sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
