[Janaka sends messengers to fetch his brother Kusadhwaja -- at the request of Dasaratha Vasishta narrates the greatness of Ikshvaku dynasty.]

tata: prabhātē janaka: kṛtakarmā maharṣibhi:.

uvāca vākyaṅ vākyajña śśatānandaṅ purōhitam৷৷1.70.1৷৷


tata: thereafter, prabhātē at dawn, maharṣibhi: by maharshis, kṛtakarmā having performed daily (sacrificial) acts, vākyajña: conversant in speech, janaka: Janaka, purōhitam chief priest, śatānandam Satananda, vākyam words, uvāca said.

Thereafter at dawn after the maharshis had performed their daily (sacrificial) rites the eloquent Janaka said to the chief priest Satananda:
bhrātā mama mahātējā yavīyānatidhārmika:.

kuśadhvaja iti khyāta: purīmadhyavasacchubhām৷৷1.70.2৷৷

vāryāphalakaparyantāṅ pibannikṣumatīṅ nadīm.

sāṅkāśyāṅ puṇyasaṅkāśāṅ vimānamiva puṣpakam৷৷1.70.3৷৷


atidhārmika: extremely righteous, kuśadhvaja: iti named Kusadhwaja, khyāta: renowned, mahātējā: most brilliant, mama my, yavīyān younger, bhrātā brother, ikṣumatīm named Ikshumati, nadīm river, piban drinking, vāryāphalakaparyantām darts planted in water as boundary, śubhām auspicious, puṇyasaṅkāśām sacred, sāṅkāśyāṅ purīm named Sankasya, puṣpakam Pushpaka, vimānamiva like chariot, adhyavasat is residing.

"The extremely righteous, renowned and most brilliant Kusadhwaja, my younger brother is (at present) ruling the sacred kingdom of Sankasya, which is like the aerial chariot Pushpaka, with darts planted in water as boundary on the bank of the auspicious, sacred river Ikshumati.
tamahaṅ draṣṭumicchāmi yajñagōptā sa mē mata:.

prītiṅ sō.pi mahātējā imāṅ bhōktā mayā saha৷৷1.70.4৷৷


aham I, tam him, draṣṭum to behold, icchāmi I am desiring, sa: he, mē my, yajñagōptā protector of the sacrifice, mata: has been accepted, mahātējā: most glorious, sō.pi he also, mayā saha with me, imām this, prītim pleasure, bhōktā will enjoy.

I desire to see Kusadhwaja who I have accepted as the protector of the sacrifice. I want that my glorious brother should share this pleasure, with me".
ēvamuktē tu vacanē śatānandasya sannidhau.

āgatā: kēcidavyagrā janakastān samādiśat৷৷1.70.5৷৷


śatānandasya Satananda's, sannidhau in the presence, ēvam thus, vacanē words, uktē (sati) when he uttered, avyagrā: undistracted, kēcit some (attendants), āgatā: had come, janaka: Janaka, tān them, samādiśat commanded.

Janaka having said so in the presence of Satananda gave instructions to a few faithful attendants who were present.
śāsanāttu narēndrasya prayayuśśīghravājibhi:.

samānētuṅ naravyāghraṅ viṣṇumindrājñayā yathā৷৷1.70.6৷৷


narēndrasya king Janaka's, śāsanāt by the command, indrājñayā by the order of Indra, viṣṇuṅ yathā like Visnu, naravyāghram tiger among men, samānētum to bring him, śīghravājibhi: on swift moving steeds, prayayu: rode away.

In obedience to the command of Indra among men (king Janaka), the messengers rode away on swift horses to bring king Kusadhwaja, a tiger among men just like fetching Visnu by the orders of Indra.
sāṅkāśyāṅ tē samāgatya dadṛśuśca kuśadhvajam.

nyavēdayanyathāvṛttaṅ janakasya ca cintitam৷৷1.70.7৷৷


tē those messengers, sāṅkāśyām city of Sankasya, samāgamya having reached, kuśadhvajam Kusadhwaja, dadṛśuśca beheld him, yathāvṛttam as happened, janakasya Janaka's, cintitam intention, nyavēdayan ca informed.

The messengers reached Sankasya, met Kusadhwaja and related to him what had happened. They informed him the intention of (king) Janaka.
tadvṛttaṅ nṛpati śśṛtvā dūtaśrēṣṭhairmahābalai:.

ajñāyā.tha narēndrasya ājagāma kuśadhvaja:৷৷1.70.8৷৷


nṛpati king, kuśadhvaja: Kusadhwaja, mahābalai: by men endowed with strength, dūtaśrēṣṭhai: by the loyal messengers, tat that, vṛttam events, śrutvā having learned, atha thereafter, narēndrasya king's, ājñayā by order, ājagāma set out.

Kusadhwaja having heard the events from the loyal, mighty messengers set out for Mithila in compliance with the request of the king (Janaka).
sa dadarśa mahātmānaṅ janakaṅ dharmavatsalam.

sō.bhivādya śatānandaṅ rājānaṅ cāpi dhārmikam৷৷1.70.9৷৷

rājārhaṅ paramaṅ divyamāsanaṅ cā.dhyarōhata.


sa: he, dharmavatsalam devoted to righteousness, mahātmānam magnanimous, janakam Janaka, dadarśa beheld, sa: he, śatānandam Satananda, dhārmikam virtuous, rājānaṅ ca king also, abhivādya having saluted with reverence, rājārham befitting a king, paramam great, divyam excellent, āsanam seat, adhyarōhata occupied.

There he saw the high-souled Janaka devoted to righteousness. Having paid his regards to Satananda and the virtuous king he occupied an exalted seat befitting a
king.
upaviṣṭāvubhau tau tu bhrātarāvatitējasau৷৷1.70.10৷৷

prēṣayāmāsaturvīrau mantriśrēṣṭhaṅ sudāmanam.


atitējasau possessing great splendour, tau vīrau those two heores, ubhau both, bhrātarau brothers, upaviṣṭau seated, mantriśrēṣṭham wisest of ministers, sudāmanam Sudaman, prēṣayāmāsatu: despatched.

The two heroic brothers endowed with great splendour seated beside each other, despatched Sudamana the wisest of ministers (to Dasaratha).
gaccha mantripatē śīghramaikṣvākumamitaprabham৷৷1.70.11৷৷

ātmajaissaha durdharṣamānayasva samantriṇam.


mantripatē O! Foremost of counsellors, śīghram speedily, gaccha go, amitaprabham immeasurable splendour, aikṣvākum Ikshvaku king Dasaratha, durdharṣam invincible, samantriṇam together with ministers, ātmajai: along with sons, samānayasva bring him.

"O Foremost among counsellors, go speedily and bring along with his ministers and sons the invincible Dasaratha of the Ikshvakus dynasty whose splendour is immeasurable".
aupakāryāṅ sa gatvā tu raghūṇāṅ kulavardhanam৷৷1.70.12৷৷

dadarśa śirasā cainamabhivādyēdamabravīt.


sa: he, aupakāryām tent, gatvā having gone, raghūṇām of the race of Raghus, kulavardhanam perpetuating, dadarśa saw, ēnam him, śirasā bowing down his head, abhivādya having saluted him, idam these words, abravīt spoke.

Having reached the tent, he (Sudamana) saw Dasaratha, perpetuator of the race of the
Raghus and bowing down his head, said:
ayōdhyādhipatē vīra vaidēhō mithilādhipa:৷৷1.70.13৷৷

sa tvāṅ draṣṭuṅ vyavasitassōpādhyāyapurōhitam.


vīra O! Heroic one, ayōdhyādhipatē O! Lord of Ayodhya, mithilādhipa: lord of Mithila, vaidēha: Janaka, sōpādhyāyapurōhitam along with spiritual preceptors and chief priest, tvām you, draṣṭum to see, saḥ he, vyavasita: has decided.

"O Heroic lord of Ayodhya, Janaka, the lord of Mithila desires to see you along with preceptors and priest".
maṅtriśrēṣṭhavaca śśṛtvā rājā sarṣigaṇastadā৷৷1.70.14৷৷

sabaṅdhuragamattatra janakō yatra vartatē.


tadā then, rājā king, maṅtriśrēṣṭhavaca: the words of the best of counsellors, śrutvā having listened, sarṣigaṇa: with hosts of rishis, sabaṅdhu: with relations, janaka: Janaka, yatra where, vartatē was waiting, tatra there, agamat went.

King Dasaratha on hearing the words of the best of the counsellors reached the place
where Janaka was waiting with hosts of rishis and relations.
sa rājā mantrisahita ssōpādhyāya: sabāndhava:৷৷1.70.15৷৷

vākyaṅ vākyavidāṅ śrēṣṭhō vaidēhamidamabravīt.


mantrisahita: along with counsellors, sabāndhava: with relations, sa: king Dasaratha, vākyavidām among those skilled speech, śrēṣṭha: excellent, rājā king, vaidēham addressing, idam these, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

The king (Dasaratha), skilled in speech, accompanied by counsellors and kins said to Janaka,the lord of the Videhas:
viditaṅ tē mahārāja ikṣvākukuladaivatam৷৷1.70.16৷৷

vaktā sarvēṣu kṛtyēṣu vasiṣṭhō bhagavānṛṣi:.


mahārāja O! Great king, bhagavān venerable, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, ikṣvākukuladaivatam spiritual protector of Ikshvaku race, sarvēṣu in all, kṛtyēṣu ceremonies, vaktā spokesman, tē to you, viditam is known.

"O Great king! venerable Vasishta is the spiritual protector of the Ikshvakus race and it is known that for all ceremonies he is our spokesman".
viśvāmitrābhyanujñātassaha sarvairmaharṣibhi:৷৷1.70.17৷৷

ēṣa vakṣyati dharmātmā vasiṣṭhō mē yathākramam.


sarvai: by all, maharṣibhi: saha along with maharshis, viśvāmitrābhyanujñāta: having been permitted by Visvamitra, dharmātmā virtuous, ēṣa: vasiṣṭha: this Vasishta, yathākramam in detailed order, mē my (race), vakṣyati will tell you.

"Having been permitted by Viswamitra, along with all maharshis virtuous Vasishta will tell you in detail about my race".
ēvamuktvā naraśrēṣṭhē rājñāṅ madhyē mahātmanām৷৷1.70.18৷৷

tūṣṇīṅbhūtē daśarathē vasiṣṭhō bhagavānṛṣi:.

uvāca vākyaṅ vākyajñō vaidēhaṅ sapurōdhasam৷৷1.70.19৷৷


naraśrēṣṭhē when the best among men, daśarathē Dasaratha, mahātmanām of the distinguished, rājñām kings, madhyē amidst, ēvam in this way, uktvā having spoken, tūṣṇīṅbhūtē remained silent, vākyajña: well-versed in speech, bhagavān adorable, vasiṣṭha: ṛṣiḥ Vasishta, sapurōdhasam in the company of priests, vaidēham Janaka, vākyam these words, uvāca spoke.

Having said this amidst the best of men and the most distinguished among kings, Dasaratha remained silent. Then Vasishta, the venerable sage, well-versed in speech
spoke to the Lord of Videhas (Janaka) in the midst of priests.
avyaktaprabhavō brahmā śāśvatō nitya avyaya:.

tasmānmarīci ssaṅjajñē marīcē: kāśyapa: suta:৷৷1.70.20৷৷


avyaktaprabhava: the unmanifest, śāśvata: eternal, nitya: constant, avyaya: Imperishable, brahmā Brahma, tasmāt from him, marīci: Marichi, saṅjajñē was born, marīcē: from Marichi, kāśyapa: Kasyapa, suta: son (sprang).

"From the unmanifest was born the eternal, the constant, the imperishable Brahma. To him was born Marichi and to Marichi, Kasyapa.
vivasvān kāśyapājjajñē manurvaivasvata ssmṛta:.

manu: prajāpati: pūrvamikṣvākustu manōssuta:৷৷1.70.21৷৷


kāśyapāt from Kasyapa, vivasvān Vivasvan, jajñē was begotten, vaivasvata: as Vivasvata, manu: Manu, smṛta: said, manu: Manu, pūrvam formerly, prajāpati: prajapati, ikṣvāku: Ikshavaku, manō: Manu's, suta: son.

Kasyapa begot Vivasvan and Vivasvan, Manu. Ikshavaku was the son of Manu
otherwise called Prajapati or Vaivasvata.
tamikṣvākumayōdhyāyāṅ rājānaṅ viddhi pūrvakam.

ikṣvākōstu sutaśśrīmān kukṣirityēva viśruta:৷৷1.70.22৷৷


tam ikṣvākum him as Ikshvaku, ayōdhyāyām in the city of Ayodhya, pūrvakam rājānam ancestral king, viddhi be informed, śrīmān the glorious, kukṣirityēva known as Kukshi, viśruta: well-known, ikṣvākō: Ikshvaku's, suta: son(was born).

It may be noted that Ikshvaku was the first ancestral king of Ayodhya whose son was the well-known, glorious Kukshi.
kukṣērathātmaja: śrīmān vikukṣirudapadyata.

vikukṣēstu mahātējā bāṇa: putra: pratāpavān৷৷1.70.23৷৷


atha thereafter, kukṣē: Kushi's, śrīmān prosperous, vikukṣi: Vikushi, ātmaja: as son, udapadyata was born, mahātējā: highly lustrous, pratāpavān valourous, bāṇa: Bana, vikukṣē: Vikushi's, putra: son.

Prosperous Vikukshi was Kukshi's son, who brought forth brilliant and powerful Bana.
bāṇasya tu mahātējā anaraṇya: pratāpavān.

anaraṇyātpṛthurjajñē triśaṅkustu pṛthōssuta:৷৷1.70.24৷৷


mahātējā: highly splendrous, pratāpavān valourous, anaraṇya: Anaranya, bāṇasya Bana's, anaraṇyāt from Anaranya, pṛthu: Pruthu, jajñē born, triśaṅku: tu Trishanku, pṛthō Pruthu's, suta: son.

Bana's son was the most brilliant and valiant Anaranya whose son Pruthu was succeeded by Trisanku.
triśaṅkōrabhavatputrō dundumārō mahāyaśā:.

yuvanāśvasutastvāsīnmāndhātā pṛthivīpati:৷৷1.70.25৷৷


triśaṅkō: of Trishanku, mahāyaśā: highly famous, dundumāra: Dundumara, putra: abhavat born as a son, māndhātā known as Mandhata, pṛthivīpati: king, yuvanāśvasuta: son of Yuvanashva, āsīt was born.

Trisanku's famous son was Dundumara also known as Yuvanashva whose son was king Mandhata.
māndhātustu suta śśrīmān susandhirudapadyata.

susandhērapi putrau dvau dhruvasandhi: prasēnajit৷৷1.70.26৷৷


māndhātu: for Mandhata, susandhi: Susandhi, śrīmān venerable, udapadyata was born, susandhērapi for Susandhi, dhruvasandhi: Dhruvasandhi, prasēnajit Prasenajit, dvau two, putrau sons.

Mandhata's son was prosperous Susandhi who brought forth two sons Dhruvasandhi and Prasenajit.
yaśasvī dhruvasandhēstu bharatō nāma nāmata:.

bharatāttu mahātējā asitō nāma jātavān৷৷1.70.27৷৷


dhruvasandhē: tu for Dhruvasandhi, nāmata: by name, bharata: nāma known Bharata, yaśasvī illustrious, bharatāt from Bharata, mahātējā: highly vigoruos, asitō nāma named Asita, jātavān begot.

To Dhruvasandhi was born the well-known Bharata who begot the vigorous Asita.
yasyaitē pratirājāna udapadyanta śatrava:.

haihayāstālajaṅghāśca śūrāśca śaśibindava:৷৷1.70.28৷৷


yasya for Asita, haihayā: Haihayas, tālajaṅghāśca Talajanghas, śūrā: valiant men, śaśibindavaśca Sasibindus, ētē pratirājāna: kings fighting against him, śatrava: enemies, udapadyanta arose.

Valiant kings belonging to the races of the Haihayas, Talaiangha, and Sasibindus became the enemies to Asita.
tāṅstu sa pratiyudhyan vai yuddhē rājā pravāsita:.

himavantamupāgamya bhṛguprasravaṇē.vasat৷৷1.70.29৷৷

asitō.lpabalō rājā mantribhissahitastadā.


sa: rājā that king, tān them, yuddhē in the conflict, pratiyudhyan fighting against them, pravāsita: was exiled from his kingdom, rājā asita: king Asita, alpabala: with relatively lesser strength, mantribhi: with counsellors, sahita: accompanied, tadā then, himavantam towards Himavat mountain, upāgamya having reached, bhṛguprasravaṇē in a place known as Bhriguprasravana, avasat lived.

The king Asita who was a weakling was defeated in the conflict against the kings and was exiled. Along with his counsellors he lived at on the Bhriguprasravana Himavat mountain.
dvē cāsya bhāryē garbhiṇyau babhūvaturiti śrutam৷৷1.70.30৷৷

ēkā garbhavināśāya sapatnyai sagaraṅ dadau.


asya his, dvē two, bhāryē wives, garbhiṇyau pregnant, babhūvatu: became, iti thus, śrutam is known, ēkā one, garbhavināśāya to destroy the embryo, sapatnayai the other wife, sagaram poison mixed in food, dadau gave.

It is said that his (Asita's) two wives were pregnant. One gave food mixed with poison to the other with the intention of destroying her embryo.
tata śśailavaraṅ ramyaṅ babhūvābhiratō muni:৷৷1.70.31৷৷

bhārgavaścyavanō nāma himavantamupāśrita:.


tata: afterwards, ramyam delightful, śailavaram best of mountains, abhirata: relished, bhārgava: of the family of Bhrigu, cyavanō nāma named Chyavana, himavantam Himavt, upāśrita: has taken refuge.

At that time Chyavana of the family of Bhrigu liked to stay at Himavat, the great, pleasant mountain.
tatraikā tu mahābhāgā bhārgavaṅ dēvavarcasam৷৷1.70.32৷৷

vavandē padmapatrākṣī kāṅkṣantī sutamātmana:.


mahābhāgā highly accomplished, tatra (tayō:) ēkā one of those two, padmapatrākṣī lotus-eyed, ātmana: for her, sutam son, kāṅkṣantī desiring, dēvavarcasam resembling the lustre of devatas, bhārgavam Chyavana, vavandē offered salutations.

That the lotus-eyed and highly accomplished Kalindi, offered herself for a son to
Chyavana who was glowing like a god.
tamṛṣiṅ sā.bhyupāgamya kāliṅdī cābhyavādayat৷৷1.70.33৷৷

sa tāmabhyavadadvipra: putrēpsuṅ putrajanmani.


sā that, kāliṅdī ca Kalindi also, tam that, ṛṣim ascetic, abhyupāgamya after approaching, abhyavādayat paid obeisance, sa: that, vipra: brahmin, tām her, putrēpsum desiring son, putrajanmani concerning the birth of a son to her, abhyavadat spoke.

Having approached the ascetic. Kalindi paid obeisance to him who said:
tava kukṣau mahābhāgē suputrassumahābala:৷৷1.70.34৷৷

mahāvīryō mahātējā acirātsañjaniṣyati.

garēṇa sahita śśrīmān mā śuca: kamalēkṣaṇē৷৷1.70.35৷৷


mahābhāgē O! Prosperous one, tava your, kukṣau in womb, sumahābala: having great prowess, mahātējā: highly lustrous, suputra: virtuous child, śrīmān glorious, garēṇa with poison, sahita: furnished, acirāt in a short time, sañjaniṣyati will be born, kamalēkṣaṇē O! Lotus eyed-one, mā śuca: do not grieve.

'O Great lady! a child of high prowess, lustre and virtues is growing in your womb. In a short time this glorious son carrying with him the poison (administered to you) will be born. O Lotus-eyed lady, do not grieve'.
cyavanaṅ tu namaskṛtya rājaputrī pativratā.

patiśōkāturā tasmātputraṅ dēvī vyajāyata৷৷1.70.36৷৷


rājaputrī princess, pativratā chaste and virtuous one, patiśōkāturā afflicted with the sorrow due to loss of her husband, dēvī that eldest queen, cyavanam Chyavana, namaskṛtya having saluted him, tasmāt for that husband, putram son, vyajāyata gave birth.

This eldest queen who was a devoted wife, afflicted with sorrow due to loss of her
husband gave birth to a son by the grace of Chyavana.
sapatnyā tu garastasyai dattō garbhajighāṅsayā.

saha tēna garēṇaiva jāta: sa sagarō.bhavat৷৷1.70.37৷৷


sapatnyā by her rival queen, tasyai for her, garbhajighāṅsayā with the intention of destroying embryo, gara: poison, datta: was given, tēna by that, garēṇa saha ēva with poison itself, jāta: was born, sa: that, sagara: sagara, abhavat became.

Since poison was given to her by her rival queen with the intention of destroying the embryo, the son was born with poison and so came to be known as Sagara.
sagarasyāsamañjastu asamañjāttathāṅ.śumān.

dilīpōṅ.śumata: putrō dilīpasya bhagīratha:৷৷1.70.38৷৷


asamañja: Asamanjasa, sagarasya Sagara's, tathā also, asamañjāt from Asamanja, aṅśumān Anshuman, dilīpa: Dilipa, aṅśumata: Anshuman's, putra: son, bhagīratha: Bhagiratha, dilīpasya Dilipa's (son).

Asamanja was the son of Sagara and to him was born Anshuman. Dilipa was the son of Anshuman and father of Bhagiratha.
bhagīrathātkakutsthaśca kakutsthasya raghussuta:.

raghōstu putrastējasvī pravṛddha: puruṣādaka:৷৷1.70.39৷৷

kalmāṣapādō hyabhavattasmājjātastu śaṅkhaṇa:.


bhagīrathāt from Bhagiratha, kakutstha: Kakutsthsa, raghu: Raghu, kakutsthasya Kakutsthsa's, suta: son, tējasvī powerful, pravṛddha: Pravriddha, raghō: Raghu's, putra: son, puruṣādaka: Purushadaka, kalmāṣapāda: Kalmashapada, abhavat became, tasmāt for him, śaṅkhaṇa: Samkhana, jāta: was born.

Bhagiratha begot Kakustha whose son was Raghu. Powerful Pravriddha was Raghu's son. He became Purushadaka (cannibal), on the curse of Vasistha. He grasped water in order to retaliate Vasishta but was prevented by his wife. The water fell on his feet and he came to be known as Kalmashapada (feet polluted with water). Samkhana was born to him.
sudarśana: śaṅghaṇasya agnivarṇa ssudarśanāt৷৷1.70.40৷৷

śīghragastvagnivarṇasya śīghragasya maru ssuta:.

marō: praśuśrukastvāsīdambarīṣa: praśuśrṛkāt৷৷1.70.41৷৷


śaṅghaṇasya for Samkhana, sudarśana: Sudarsana, sudarśanāt from Sudarsana, agnivarṇa: Agnivarna, agnivarṇasya for AgniVarna, śīghraga: Sighraga, śīghragasya for sighraga, maru: Maru, suta: son, marō: for Maru, praśuśruka: Prasusruka, praśuśrukāt from Prasusukra, ambarīṣa: Ambarisha, āsīt were born.

Sudarsana was the son of Samkhana. His son was Agnivarna. To Agnivarna was born Sighraga and to Sighraga, Maru. To Maru, was born Prasusruka and to Prasrusuka, Ambarisha.
ambarīṣasya putrō.bhūnnahuṣa: pṛthivīpati:.

nahuṣasya yayātistu nābhāgastu yayātija:৷৷1.70.42৷৷


pṛthivīpati: king, nahuṣa: Nahusha, ambarīṣasya Ambarisha's, putra: son, abhūt became, nahuṣasya Nahusha's, yayāti: Yayati was born, nābhāga: Nabhaga , yayātija: was born to Yayati.

King Nahusha was the son of Ambarisha. To Nahusha was born Yayati whose son was Nabhaga.
nābhāgasya babhūvāja: ajāddaśarathō.bhavat.

asmāddaśarathājjātau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau৷৷1.70.43৷৷


nābhāgasya Nabhaga's, aja: Aja, babhūva was born, ajāt from Aja, daśaratha: Dasaratha, abhavat was born, asmāt from this, daśarathāt from Dasaratha, bhrātarau brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, jātau were born.

Nabhaga's son was Aja. Aja was the father of Dasaratha and Dasaratha, the father of Rama and Lakshmana.
ādivaṅśaviśuddhānāṅ rājñāṅ paramadharmiṇām.

ikṣvākukulajātānāṅ vīrāṇāṅ satyavādinām৷৷1.70.44৷৷

rāmalakṣmaṇayōrarthē tvatsutē varayē nṛpa!.

sadṛśābhyāṅ nṛpaśrēṣṭha sadṛśē dātumarhasi৷৷1.70.45৷৷


nṛpaśrēṣṭha O! Great among men, nṛpa! O! King, ādivaṅśaviśuddhānām possessing purity of race right from the beginning, paramadharmiṇām supremely virtuous, vīrāṇām heroic, satyavādinām truth speaking, ikṣvākukulajātānām sprung from the family of Ikshwaku, rājñām pertaining to the kings, rāmalakṣmaṇayōrarthē for Rama and Lakshmana, tvatsutē your daughters, varayē I choose as brides for them, sadṛśābhyām for both of the worthy ones, sadṛśē equally accomplished two worthy daughters, dātum to bestow, arhasi behoves of you.

Great among men, O King! be gracious enough to give your equally accomplished two daughters in mariage to Rama and Lakshmana who are born in the family of Ikshvakus kings possessing the purity of race right from the beginning. They are highly virtuous, heroic, and truthful. They have chosen your daughters as their brides".

Thus ends the seventieth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
