[Preparations for the marriage of the four sons of king Dasaratha.]

మహాముని: mighty ascetic, విశ్వామిత్ర: Visvamitra, వసిష్ఠసహిత: accompanied by Vasista, ఉక్తవన్తమ్ thus spoken, వీరమ్ valiant, వైదేహమ్ king of Videha, నృపమ్ addressing king Janaka, వచనమ్ words, ఉవాచ said.
When Janaka the valiant king of Videha thus spoke (on the genealogy of his family) the mighty ascetic Viswamitra accompanied by Vasishta said to Janaka:
అచిన్త్యాన్యప్రమేయాని కులాని నరపుఙ్గవ!.
ఇక్ష్వాకూణాం విదేహానాం నైషాం తుల్యోస్తి కశ్చన৷৷1.72.2৷৷
ఇక్ష్వాకూణాం విదేహానాం నైషాం తుల్యోస్తి కశ్చన৷৷1.72.2৷৷
నరపుఙ్గవ O! Pre-eminent among men, ఇక్ష్వాకూణామ్ of kings of Ikshvaku, విదేహానాం చ also of Videha, కులాని races, అచిన్త్యాని beyond comprehension, అప్రమేయాని immeasurable, ఏషాం for these kings of Ikshvaku and Videha, తుల్య: equal, కశ్చన anyone, నాస్తి is not there.
"O Pre-eminent among men! the glory of the two races of Ikshvakus as also of Videhas is in comprehensible and immeasurable. There is none equal to these kings of the Ikshvakus and Videhas.
సదృశో ధర్మసమ్బన్ధ: సదృశో రూపసమ్పదా.
రామలక్ష్మణయో రాజన్! సీతా చోర్మిలయా సహ৷৷1.72.3৷৷

రాజన్ O! King, ఊర్మిలయా సహ along with Urmila, సీతా Sita, రామలక్ష్మణయో: for Rama and Lakshmana (is being offered), సదృశ: perfectly matched, ధర్మసమ్బన్ధ: the marriage is in accordance with religious merit, రూపసమ్పదాచ in virtue and beauty, సదృశ: is fit.
O King! it is a perfect match between Sita and Rama and Urmila and Lakshmana. In respect of piety and beauty the match is perfect.
వక్తవ్యం చ నరశ్రేష్ఠ! శ్రూయతాం వచనం మమ.
భ్రాతా యవీయాన్ ధర్మజ్ఞ ఏష రాజా కుశధ్వజ:৷৷1.72.4৷৷

నరశ్రేష్ఠ! O! Best of men, మమ my, వక్తవ్యం చ is fit to be divulged, వచనమ్ words, శ్రూయతామ్ may be heard, యవీయాన్ భ్రాతా this younger brother, ఏష: రాజా this king, కుశధ్వజ: Kusadhwaja, ధర్మజ్ఞ: knower of righteousness.
O Best of men! my words deserve to be heard. This younger brother king Kusadhwaja is knower of righteousness.
అస్య ధర్మాత్మనో రాజన్! రూపేణాప్రతిమం భువి .
సుతాద్వయం నరశ్రేష్ఠ పత్న్యర్థం వరయామహే৷৷1.72.5৷৷

రాజన్ O! King, నరశ్రేష్ఠ O! Eminent among men, రూపేణ in beauty, భువి on this earth, అప్రతిమమ్ unrivalled, అస్య ధర్మాత్మన: this virtuous one's, సుతాద్వయమ్ two daughters, పత్న్యర్థమ్ as consorts, వరయామహే we are seeking.
O King, O Eminent among men! we seek the hands of this virtuous king's two daughters, unrivalled in beauty, on earth, as consorts.
భరతస్య కుమారస్య శత్రుఘ్నస్య చ ధీమత:.
వరయామస్సుతే రాజన్ తయోరర్థే మహాత్మనో:৷৷1.72.6৷৷

రాజన్ O! King, కుమారస్య of the youthful, భరతస్య Bharata, ధీమత: sagacious, శత్రుఘ్నస్య చ for Satrughna also, మహాత్మనో: for the magnanimous ones, తయోరర్థే in the interests of both of them, సుతే two daughters, వరయామ: we choose.
O king! we choose your brother's daughters for the great souls: the young Bharata and the sagacious Satrughna.
పుత్రా దశరథస్యేమే రూపయౌవనశాలిన:.
లోకపాలోపమాస్సర్వే దేవతుల్యపరాక్రమా:৷৷1.72.7৷৷
లోకపాలోపమాస్సర్వే దేవతుల్యపరాక్రమా:৷৷1.72.7৷৷
ఇమే these, దశరథస్య పుత్రా: sons of Dasaratha, సర్వే all, రూపయౌవనశాలిన: shining with youth and beauty, లోకపాలోపమా: resembling the kings who are the protectors of the worlds, దేవతుల్యపరాక్రమా: equal to devatas in valour.
Bestowed with youth and beauty, these sons of Dasaratha resemble kings in defending the worlds and gods in valour.
ఉభయోరపి రాజేన్ద్ర సమ్బన్ధేనానుబధ్యతామ్.
ఇక్ష్వాకో: కులమవ్యగ్రం భవత:పుణ్యకర్మణ:৷৷1.72.8৷৷
ఇక్ష్వాకో: కులమవ్యగ్రం భవత:పుణ్యకర్మణ:৷৷1.72.8৷৷
రాజేన్ద్ర O! King, ఇక్ష్వాకో: Ikshvaku's, పుణ్యకర్మణః of pious deeds, భవత: your, ఉభయోరపి both of you, కులమ్ races, సమ్బన్ధేన by this alliance, అన్యగ్రమ్ with clear vision, అనుబధ్యతామ్ let it be tied.
O King of kings (Janaka)! the bond between your race with its pious deeds and the Ikshvakus may be strenghthened by this alliance".
విశ్వామిత్రవచ శ్శృత్వా వసిష్ఠస్య మతే తదా.
జనక: ప్రాంజలిర్వాక్యమువాచ మునిపుఙ్గవౌ৷৷1.72.9৷৷

తదా then, వసిష్ఠస్య Vasistha's, మతే by wish, విశ్వామిత్రవచ: Viswamitra's words, శృత్వా having listened, జనక: Janaka, ప్రాంజలి: with folded palms, మునిపుఙ్గవౌ addressing eminent asetics, వాక్యమ్ words, ఉవాచ spoke.
Having heard the words of Viswamitra which echoed the wish of Vasishta, Janaka replied to the eminent ascetics with folded palms.
కులం ధన్యమిదం మన్యే యేషాం నో మునిపుఙ్గవౌ .
సదృశం కులసమ్బన్ధం యదాజ్ఞాపయథ: స్వయమ్৷৷1.72.10৷৷
సదృశం కులసమ్బన్ధం యదాజ్ఞాపయథ: స్వయమ్৷৷1.72.10৷৷
యేషామ్ న: for those of us, సదృశం befitting, కులసమ్బన్ధమ్ alliance of the two races, మునిపుఙ్గవౌ two eminent ascetics, స్వయమ్ on your own, యత్ for which reason, ఆజ్ఞాపయథ: are commanding, ఇదమ్ this, కులమ్ race, ధన్యమ్ blessed, మన్యే I consider.
"Since both of you, eminent ascetics, recomended this befitting alliance of the two races on your own, I regard my race as blessed.
ఏవం భవతు భద్రం వ: కుశధ్వజసుతే ఇమే.
పత్న్యౌ భజేతాం సహితౌ శత్రుఘ్నభరతావుభౌ৷৷1.72.11৷৷
పత్న్యౌ భజేతాం సహితౌ శత్రుఘ్నభరతావుభౌ৷৷1.72.11৷৷
ఏవం భవతు let it be so, వ: భద్రం: prosperity to you, ఇమే these, కుశధ్వజసుతే daughters of Kusadhwaja, సహితౌ together moving, శత్రుఘ్నభరతౌ for Satrughna and Bharata, ఉభౌ for both of them, పత్న్యౌ as wives, భజేతామ్ let them serve.
"Let it be so, Be blessed! Let these two daughters of Kusadhwaja (Mandavi and Srutakirti) be the wives of Satrughna and Bharata respectively and serve them.
ఏకాహ్నా రాజపుత్రీణాం చతసృణాం మహామునే!.
పాణీన్ గృహ్ణన్తు చత్వారో రాజపుత్రా మహాబలా:৷৷1.72.12৷৷
పాణీన్ గృహ్ణన్తు చత్వారో రాజపుత్రా మహాబలా:৷৷1.72.12৷৷
మహామునే O! Great ascetic, మహాబలా: valiant, చత్వార: four, రాజపుత్రా: princes, ఏకాహ్నా on the same day, చతసృామ్ of the four, రాజపుత్రీణామ్ princesses, పాణీన్ hands, గృహ్ణన్తు let them take.
O Great ascetic! let the valiant four princes take the hands of four princesses on the same day.
ఉత్తరే దివసే బ్రహ్మన్! ఫల్గునీభ్యాం మనీషిణ:.
వైవాహికం ప్రశంసన్తి భగో యత్ర ప్రజాపతి:৷৷1.72.13৷৷

బ్రహ్మన్ O! Foremost among brahmins, ఫల్గునీభ్యామ్ ఉత్తరే దివసే on the later day of the ascent of the two Phalgunis (Phalgunis are two sisters. The previous day of the ascent of Phalguni stars, Poorva Phalguni wil be ascendent and the folowing day Uttara Phalguni wil be ascendant ), యత్ర in which day, ప్రజాపతి: bestower of children, భగ: Bhaga, వైవాహికమ్ to perform marriage, మనీషిణ: wise people, ప్రశంసన్తి are praising.
"The wise, O Brahmin! think the marriage is favourable when Bhaga is Prajapati on the succeeding day of the ascent of the two stars. (that is, when poorva is followed by uttara phalguni).
ఏవముక్త్వా వచస్సౌమ్యం ప్రత్యుత్థాయ కృతాఞ్జలి:.
ఉభౌ మునివరౌ రాజా జనకో వాక్యమబ్రవీత్৷৷1.72.14৷৷

జనక: రాజా king Janaka, ఏవమ్ thus, సౌమ్యమ్ pleasing, వచ: words, ఉక్త్వా having spoken, ప్రత్యుత్థాయ having stood up, కృతాఞ్జలి: with folded hands, ఉభౌ both, మునివరౌ great ascetics, వాక్యమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.
King Janaka, having spoken these pleasing words, stood up and with folded hands addressing both the great ascetics:
పరో ధర్మ: కృతో మహ్యం శిష్యోస్మిభవతో సదా.
ఇమాన్యాసనముఖ్యాని ఆసాతాం మునిపుఙ్గవౌ৷৷1.72.15৷৷

మహ్యమ్ for me, పర: supreme, ధర్మ: religious merit, కృత: has been done, సదా always, భవతో: for both of you, శిష్య: అస్మి I am a desciple, మునిపుఙ్గవౌ eninent ascestics, ఇమాని these, ఆసనముఖ్యాని best of thrones, ఆసాతామ్ occupy.
"You have earned me a great religious merit. I shall be always your disciple O Eminent ascestics, occupy these important seats".
యథా దశరథస్యేయం తథాయోధ్యా పురీ మమ.
ప్రభుత్వే నాస్తి సన్దేహో యథార్హం కర్తుమర్హథ৷৷1.72.16৷৷

ఇయమ్ this Mithila, దశరథస్య Dasaratha's, యథా as, అయోధ్యా పురీ Ayodhya city, మమ to me, తథా so it is, ప్రభుత్వే in the matter of governance, సన్దేహ: doubt, నాస్తి not there, యథార్హమ్ appropriately, కర్తుమ్ to do, అర్హథ behoves of you.
"Dasaratha has right on the city of Ayodhya as much as I have on this. This right is unquestionable. So do whatever you think right".
తథా బ్రువతి వైదేహే జనకే రఘునన్దన:.
రాజా దశరథో హృష్ట: ప్రత్యువాచ మహీపతిమ్৷৷1.72.17৷৷

వైదేహే when the king of Videha, జనకే Janaka, తథా in that manner, బ్రువతి while speaking, రఘునన్దన: descendent of Raghu, రాజా దశరథ: king Dasaratha, హృష్ట: pleased, మహీపతిమ్ addressing king Janaka, ప్రత్యువాచ replied.
To the words of Janaka, king of Videha, king Dasaratha, the descendant of Raghu cheerfully replied:
యువామసఙ్ఖ్యేయగుణౌ భ్రాతరౌ మిథిలేశ్వరౌ.
ఋషయో రాజసఙ్ఘాశ్చ భవద్భ్యామభిపూజితా:৷৷1.72.18৷৷
ఋషయో రాజసఙ్ఘాశ్చ భవద్భ్యామభిపూజితా:৷৷1.72.18৷৷
మిథిలేశ్వరౌ lords of Mithila, భ్రాతరౌ brothers, యువామ్ both of you, అసఙ్ఖ్యేయగుణౌ have countless virtues, భవద్భ్యామ్ by you, ఋషయ: rishis, రాజసఙ్ఘాశ్చ hosts of kings, అభిపూజితా: have been worshipped.
"You both brothers are lords of Mithila. You possess countless virtues. You pay regards to many rishis and hosts of kings".
స్వస్తి ప్రాప్నుహి భద్రం తే గమిష్యామి స్వమాలయమ్.
శ్రాద్ధకర్మాణి సర్వాణి విధాస్యామీతి చాబ్రవీత్৷৷1.72.19৷৷
శ్రాద్ధకర్మాణి సర్వాణి విధాస్యామీతి చాబ్రవీత్৷৷1.72.19৷৷
స్వస్తి safety, ప్రాప్నుహి you may obtain, తే భద్రమ్ prosperity to you, స్వమ్ relating to mine, ఆలయమ్ residence, గమిష్యామి I shall go, సర్వాణి all, శ్రాద్ధకర్మాణి rites concerning the ceremony in accordance with the rituals, విధాస్యామి చ I shall perform, ఇతి thus, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.
"Be safe. Be blessed. Let me retire to the camp. I have to perform the rites offerings to the forefathers".
తమాపృష్ట్వా నరపతిం రాజా దశరథస్తదా.
మునీన్ద్రౌ తౌ పురస్కృత్య జగామాశు మహాయశా:৷৷1.72.20৷৷
మునీన్ద్రౌ తౌ పురస్కృత్య జగామాశు మహాయశా:৷৷1.72.20৷৷
తదా then, మహాయశా: renowned, రాజా దశరథ: king Dasaratha, తమ్ that, నరపతిమ్ king men, ఆపృష్ట్వా having taken leave of, తౌ those two, మునీన్ద్రౌ ascetics, పురస్కృత్య placing them in the fore-front, ఆశు immediately, జగామ went away.
Then renowned king Dasaratha, took leave of the two great ascetics. Then the rowned king Dasaratha took have of the king (Janaka) immediately following the two great ascetics.
స గత్వా నిలయం రాజా శ్రాద్ధం కృత్వా విధానత:.
ప్రభాతే కాల్యముత్థాయ చక్రే గోదానముత్తమమ్৷৷1.72.21৷৷

స: that, రాజా king, నిలయమ్ residence, గత్వా having gone, విధానత: according to scriptures, శ్రాద్ధమ్ Shraddha ceremony, కృత్వా having performed, ప్రభాతే at dawn, ఉత్థాయ having risen, కాల్యమ్ appropriate to the time, ఉత్తమమ్ excellent, గోదానమ్ gifting of cows (a ceremony duly initiating the marriage, vow of Snathaka ), చక్రే made.
The king (Dasaratha) reached the abode, performed the sharaddha ceremony in accordance with the scriptures. Next day at dawn at appropriate time he gifted away cows (a ceremony performed by initiating the bridegrooms into the marriage.)
గవాం శతసహస్రాణి బ్రాహ్మణేభ్యో నరాధిప:.
ఏకైకశో దదౌ రాజా పుత్రానుద్దిశ్య ధర్మత:৷৷1.72.22৷৷

నరాధిప: lord of men, రాజా king, పుత్రాన్ sons, ఏకైకశ: for each one, ఉద్ధిశ్య referring to their names, బ్రాహ్మణేభ్య: for brahmins, గవామ్ cows, శతసహస్రాణి in hundred thousands, ధర్మత: in accordance with law, దదౌ bestowed.
For the welfare of each of his sons the king (Dasaratha) religiously gave away a hundred thousand cows to brahmins.
సువర్ణశ్రుఙ్గా స్సమ్పన్నా స్సవత్సా: కాంస్యదోహనా:.
గవాం శతసహస్రాణి చత్వారి పురుషర్షభ:৷৷1.72.23৷৷
విత్తమన్యచ్చ సుబహుద్విజేభ్యో రఘునన్దన:.
దదౌ గోదానముద్దిశ్య పుత్రాణాం పుత్రవత్సల:৷৷1.72.24৷৷
గవాం శతసహస్రాణి చత్వారి పురుషర్షభ:৷৷1.72.23৷৷
విత్తమన్యచ్చ సుబహుద్విజేభ్యో రఘునన్దన:.
దదౌ గోదానముద్దిశ్య పుత్రాణాం పుత్రవత్సల:৷৷1.72.24৷৷
పురుషర్షభ: great among men, పుత్రవత్సల: affectionate towards his children, రఘునన్దన: Dasaratha, పుత్రాణామ్ sons', గోదానమ్ gifting away of cows, ఉద్ధిశ్య with reference to that, సువర్ణశ్రుఙ్గా: with their horns plaited with gold, సమ్పన్నా: endowed with abundance(of milk), సవత్సా: accompanied by calves, కాంస్యదోహనా: bronze vessels for milking, గవామ్ of cows, చత్వారి four, శతసహస్రాణి a hundred thousand, అన్యత్ other, సుబహు innumerable, విత్తమ్ చ valuables, ద్విజేభ్య: for brahmins, దదౌ bestowed.
Great among men and affectionate towards his children, (king Dasaratha), the delight of the Raghus donated in the name of his sons' donates to the brahmins four hundred thousand cows. They were capable of abundance of milk. Their horns were plaited with gold. They were accompanied by calves. With them were given away bell-metal vessels for keeping milk and innumerable valuables.
స సుతై: కృతగోదానైర్వృతస్తు నృపతిస్తదా.
లోకపాలైరివాభాతి వృత: స్సౌమ్య: ప్రజాపతి:৷৷1.72.25৷৷

కృతగోదానై: having distributed the cows, సుతై: with his sons, వృత: surrounded, స: that, నృపతి: king, తదా then, లోకపాలై: by guardians of worlds, వృత: surrounded, సౌమ్య: pleased, ప్రజాపతిరివ like brahma, ఆభాతి shining.
With his sons for whose sake cows have been given away the cheerful king looked like shining Prajapati surrrounded by the guardians of the world.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే బాలకాణ్డే ద్విసప్తతితమస్సర్గ:৷৷
Thus ends the seventhsecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
