[Viswamitra leaves for the Himavat mountain--king Janaka offers gifts to his daughters--King Dasaratha departs for his kingdom-encounter with Parasurama.]

atha rātryāṅ vyatītāyāṅ viśvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ.

āpṛṣṭvā tau ca rājānau jagāmōttaraparvatam ৷৷1.74.1৷৷

āśīrbhi: pūrayitvā ca kumārāṅśca sarāghavān.


atha afterwards, rātryām when the night, vyatītāyām had passed away, sa: that, mahāmuni: great ascetic, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, rāghavān born in the race of Raghu, kumārān ca princes, āśīrbhi: with blessing, pūrayitvā having filled, tau those two, rājānai kings, āpṛṣṭvā having taken leave of them, uttaraparvatam northern mountains, jagāma went.

Night over, the great ascetic Viswamitra, profusely blessed the princes born in the race of Raghu, took leave of the two kings and set out towards the northern (Himalayas) mountains.
viśvāmitrē gatē rājā vaidēhaṅ mithilādhipam .

āpṛṣṭvā.tha jagāmāśu rājā daśaratha: purīm৷৷1.74.2৷৷


viśvāmitrē when Visvamitra, gatē had departed, atha thereafter, rājā one who causes joy to his people, daśaratha: rājā king Dasaratha, mithilādhipam lord of Mithila, vaidēham king Janaka, āpṛṣṭvā taking leave of him, āśu speedily, purīm to city of Ayodhya, jagāma went.

With the departure of Viswamitra, king Dasaratha who was the source of happiness to his subjects took leave of Janaka, king of Mithila and speedily set out for the city of Ayodhya.
gacchantaṅ taṅ tu rājānamanvagacchannarādhipa:৷৷1.74.3৷৷

atha rājā vidēhānāṅ dadau kanyādhanaṅ bahu.


narādhipa: king Janaka, gacchantam while going, tam that, rājānam king Dasaratha, anvagacchat followed, atha thereafter, vidēhānām lord of Videhas, rājā king Janaka, bahu plenty of, kanyādhanam gifts to his daughters, dadau gave.

King Janaka, lord of the Videhas, gave plenty of gifts to his daughters and followed king Dasaratha for some distance on his journey to Ayodhya.
gavāṅ śatasahasrāṇi bahūni mithilēśvara:.

kambalānāṅ ca mukhyānāṅ kṣaumakōṭyaṅbarāṇi ca৷৷1.74.4৷৷

hastyaśvarathapādātaṅ divyarūpaṅ svalaṅkṛtam .

dadau kanyāpitā tāsāṅ dāsīdāsamanuttamam ৷৷1.74.5৷৷


kanyāpitā father of brides, mithilēśvara: lord of Mithila, gavām of cows, bahūni several, śatasahasrāṇi hundred thousands, mukhyānām of excellent, kambalānām carpets, kṣaumakōṭyambarāṇi ca crores of silk garments, hastyaśvarathapādātam elephants, horses, chariots and infantry, divyarūpam of celestial beauty, svalaṅkṛtam well-decorated, anuttamam excellent, dāsīdāsam male and female servants, tāsām for them, dadau gave.

The king of Mithila and father of the brides gave a hundred thousand cows, excellent woollen carpets, crores of silk garments, four divisions of elephants, horses, chariots and infantry and well-decorated, excellent male and maid-servants shining in celestial
beauty.
hiraṇyasya suvarṇasya muktānāṅ vidrumasya ca৷৷1.74.6৷৷

dadau paramasaṅhṛṣṭa: kanyādhanamanuttamam.


paramasaṅhṛṣṭa: immensely pleased, hiraṇyasya golden, suvarṇasya of fine glow, muktānām pearls', vidrumasya corals, anuttamam excellent, kanyādhanam ornaments to his daughters, dadau gave.

Immensely delighted, he gave his excellent daughters gold, pearls and corals.
dattvā bahu dhanaṅ rājā samanujñāpya pārthivam৷৷1.74.7৷৷

pravivēśa svanilayaṅ mithilāṅ mithilēśvara:.


mithilēśvara: lord of Mithila, rājā king Janaka, bahu dhanaṅ plenty of wealth, dattvā having given, pārthivam king Dasaratha, samanujñāpya after making him give consent to Janaka to go back, svanilayam own residence, mithilām Mithila, pravivēśa entered.

The Lord of Mithila bestowed a lot of wealth on his daughters and with the consent of the king (Dasaratha) re-entered his residence in Mithila.
rājā.pyayōdhyādhipatissaha putrairmahātmabhi:.

ṛṣīn sarvān puraskṛtya jagāma sabalānuga:৷৷1.74.8৷৷


ayōdhyādhipati: lord of Ayodhya, rājāpi king Dasaratha also, mahātmabhi: with illustrious, putrai: saha along with his sons, sarvān all, ṛṣīn sages, puraskṛtya placing him in the fore-front, sabalānuga: followed by his army and followers, jagāma went.

King Dasaratha of Ayodhya also left along with his great sons preceded by the sages and followed by the army.
gacchantaṅ taṅ naravyāghraṅ sarṣisaṅghaṅ sarāghavam৷৷1.74.9৷৷

ghōrā: sma pakṣiṇō vācō vyāharanti tatastata:.


sarṣisaṅgham with hosts of sages, sarāghavam with Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna, naravyāghram tiger among men, tam that, Dasaratha, tatastata: here and there, ghōrā: frightening, pakṣiṇa: birds, vāca: disagreeable sounds, vyāharanti sma uttered.

While this tiger among men Dasaratha, was returning with the hosts of sages and his sons, he observed here and there frightening birds making disagreeable sounds.
bhaumāścaiva mṛgā ssarvē gacchanti sma pradakṣiṇam৷৷1.74.10৷৷

tān dṛṣṭvā rājaśārdūlō vasiṣṭhaṅ paryapṛcchata.


bhaumā: those relating to earth, sarvē all, mṛgā: beasts, pradakṣiṇam moving to the right, gacchanti went away, tān them, dṛṣṭvā having seen, rājaśārdūla: best among men, Dasaratha, vasiṣṭham Vasishta, paryapṛcchata enquired.

Seeing the beasts on the way rushing to the right the tiger among men, enquired of Vasishta:
asaumyā: pakṣiṇō ghōrā mṛgāścāpi pradakṣiṇā:৷৷1.74.11৷৷

kimidaṅ hṛdayōtkampi manō mama viṣīdati.


ghōrā: freightening, pakṣiṇa: birds, asaumyā: are disagreeable, mṛgāścāpi deers also, pradakṣiṇā: on to their right, hṛdayōtkampi trembling my heart, idam this, kim what, mama my, mana: mind, viṣīdati depressed of spirits.

"While the frightening birds are inauspicious, the deer on the right are favourables Why is this? My heart beats. My mind is depressed.
rājñō daśarathasyaitacchrutvā vākyaṅ mahānṛṣi:৷৷1.74.12৷৷

uvāca madhurāṅ vāṇīṅ śrūyatāmasya yatphalam.


mahānṛṣi: that great rishi Vasishta, rājña: daśarathasya king Dasarath's, ētat these, vākyam words, śrutvā having listened, madhurām in gentle accents, vāṇīm words, uvāca spoke, asya for this, yat which, phalam consequence, śrūyatām may be heard.

To these words of king Dasaratha the great ascetic Vasishta replied in a gentle voice, "I shall tell you the consequences Listen!".
upasthitaṅ bhayaṅ ghōraṅ divyaṅ pakṣimukhāccyutam৷৷1.74.13৷৷

mṛgā: praśamayantyētē santāpastyajyatāmayam.


pakṣimukhāt from the mouth of these birds, cyutam released (foretells), divyam of celestial nature, upasthitam befallen, ghōram dreadful, bhayam fear, ētē these, mṛgā: beasts, praśamayanti restoring peace, ayam this, santāpa: grief, tyajyatām may be abandoned.

The dreadful cries from the mouths of birds foretell an event of celestial nature likely to befall but the movements other of deer indicate restoration of peace. Therefore do not grieve.
tēṣāṅ saṅvadatāṅ tatra vāyu: prādurbabhūva ha৷৷1.74.14৷৷

kampayan pṛthivīṅ sarvāṅ pātayaṅśca drumāṅcchubhān.


tēṣāṅ when they, saṅvadatām were conversing, tatra there, pṛthivīm the earth, kampayan shaking, śubhān beautiful, drumān trees, pātayan felling, vāyu: wind, prādurbabhūva ha arose.

While they were conversing, a storm blew, shaking the earth and felling down beautiful trees.
tamasā saṅvṛtassūrya ssarvā na prababhurdiśa৷৷1.74.15৷৷

bhasmanā cāvṛtaṅ sarvaṅ saṅmūḍhamiva tadbalam.


sūrya: Sun, tamasā with darkness, saṅvṛta: covered, sarvā: all, diśa: cardinal quarters, na prababhu: did not shine, tat that, sarvam all, balam army, bhasmanā with ashes, āvṛtaṅ covered with, saṅmūḍhamiva as if fainted.

The Sun was wrapped in dark. The quarters were devoid of brightness. The entire army was covered with ashes, as if they fainted.
vasiṣṭhaścarṣayaścānyē rājā ca sasutastadā ৷৷1.74.16৷৷

saṅsajñā iva tatrāsan sarvamanyadvicētanam.


tadā then, vasiṣṭhaśca Vasishta, anyē other, ṛṣayaśca saints, sasuta: with his sons, rājā king Dasaratha, sasaṅjñā: iva as if having consciousness, (tatra)āsan remained, anyat others, sarvam entire, vicētanam lost their consciousness.

At that time Vasishta and other saints, the king and his sons held their senses under control. All others lost their consciousness.
tasmiṅstamasi ghōrē tu bhasmacchannēva sā camū:৷৷1.74.17৷৷

dadarśa bhīmasaṅkāśaṅ jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇam.

bhārgavaṅ jāmadagnyaṅ taṅ rājarājavimardinam৷৷1.74.18৷৷

kailāsamiva durdharṣaṅ kālāgnimiva dussaham.

jvalaṅtamiva tējōbhirdurnirīkṣyaṅ pṛthagjanai:৷৷1.74.19৷৷

skandhē cāsajya paraśuṅ dhanurvidyudgaṇōpamam .

pragṛhya śaramukhyaṅ ca tripuraghnaṅ yathā śivam৷৷1.74.20৷৷


tasmin In that, ghōrē fearful, tamasi darkness, bhasmacchannēva looking as if covered with ashes, sā camū: that army, bhīmasaṅkāśam looking dreadful, jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇam wearing a crown of matted hair, rājarājavimardinam decimated the king of kings, kailāsamiva like Kailasa Mountain, durdharṣam inaccessible, kālāgnimiva like the fire at the time of dissolution, dussaham difficult to endure, tējōbhi: with energy, jvalantamiva as if blazing, pṛthagjanai: by ordinary people, durnirīkṣam incapable of being gazed upon, paraśum axe, skandhē on his shoulder, āsajya hanging, vidyudgaṇōpamam resembling group of lightenings, dhanu: bow, śaramukhyam principal arrow, pragṛhya grasping, tripuraghnam slayer of Tripura, śivaṅ yathā like Siva, tam that, bhārgavam descendent of Bhrugu, jāmadagnayam son of Jamadagni, dadarśa beheld.

In that dreadful darkness while the army looked as if covered with ashes, king Dasaratha encountered the repressor of kings, descendant of Bhrugu and son of Jamadagni with a terrible crown of matted hair, inaccessible like Kailasa mountain and unendurable like the fire at the time of dissolution. The laymen gazing at his blazing energy,hanging an axe on his shoulder and holding a bow in his hand which flashed like lighning and the principal arrow he looked like Siva at the time of slaying of
Tripura.
taṅ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasaṅkāśaṅ jvalantamiva pāvakam.

vasiṣṭhapramukhā viprā japahōmaparāyaṇā:৷৷1.74.21৷৷

saṅgatā munayassarvē sañjajalpurathō mitha:.


bhīmasaṅkāśam fearful appearance, jvalantam like flaming, pāvakam iva like fire, tam him, dṛṣṭvā having seen, japahōmaparāyaṇā: engaged in reciting mantras and oblations to the fire, viprā: brahmanas, vasiṣṭhapramukhā: Vasishta and others, sarvē munaya: all saints, saṅgatā: having assembled, athō afterwards, mitha: mutually, sañjajalpu: whispered.

At the sight of the fearful appearance of Parasurama looking like flaming fire, Vasishta and all other saints who were in the habit of chanting mantras and offering oblations to the fire whispered among themselves:
kaccitpitṛvadhāmarṣī kṣatraṅ nōtsādayiṣyati৷৷1.74.22৷৷

pūrvaṅ kṣatravadhaṅ kṛtvā gatamanyurgatajvara:.

kṣatrasyōtsādanaṅ bhūyō na khalvasya cikīrṣitam৷৷1.74.23৷৷


pitṛvadhāmarṣī enraged at the slaughter of his father, kṣatram kshatriya race, nōtsādayiṣyatikaccit is he not intent upon exterminating, pūrvam formerly, kṣatravadham slaughter of kshatriyas, kṛtvā having made, gatamanyu: freed from anger, gatajvara: freed from grief, bhūya: again, kṣatrasya of kshatriya race, utsādanam annihilation, asya for him, na cikīrṣitaṅ khalu is not desirous of doing it indeed.

Enraged at the slaughter of his father (by Kartaveeryarjuna), is he intent upon exterminating the kshatriya race? Having slaughtered the kshatriyas, in the past he was freed from anger and grief. Is he again desirous of annihilating the kshatriyas?
ēvamuktvā.rghyamādāya bhārgavaṅ bhīmadarśanam.

ṛṣayō rāma rāmēti vacō madhuramabruvan৷৷1.74.24৷৷


ṛṣaya: saints, ēvam thus, uktvā having talked amongst themselves, arghyam the arghya, ādāya taking, bhīmadarśanam dreadful appearance, bhārgavam son of Bhargava, rāma rāma iti "Rama, Rama" saying so, madhuram vaca: soothing words, abruvan spoke.

The saints having thus talked amongst themselves, offered arghya to the son of Bhargava, of dreadful appearance and addressed him in soothing words: "O Rama! O Rama!".
pratigṛhya tu tāṅ pūjāmṛṣidattāṅ pratāpavān.

rāmaṅ dāśarathiṅ rāmō jāmadagnyō.bhyabhāṣata৷৷1.74.25৷৷


pratāpavān valiant, jāmadagnya: son of Jamadagni, rāma: Parasurama, ṛṣidattām offered by saints, tām pūjām that homage, pratigṛhya having accpted, dāśarathiṅ rāmam Rama, son of Dasaratha, abhyabhāṣata spoke.

Valiant Parasurama, son of Jamadagni, having accepted the homage offered by the saints addressed Rama, son of Dasaratha and said:
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē catussaptatitamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the seventyfourth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic
composed by sage Valmiki.
