[Sumantra relates the story of sage Rsyasringa to Dasaratha- tells him he would get sons after performance of a sacrifice by Rsyasringa--Dasaratha plans to get Rsyasringa to Ayodhya.]

ētacchrutvā rahassūtō rājānamidamabravīt.

ṛtvigbhirupadiṣṭō.yaṅ purāvṛttō mayā śruta:৷৷1.9.1৷৷


ētat this matter, śrutvā having heard, sūta: king's charioteer, rājānam addressing king, raha: in privacy, idam these words, abravīt said, ṛtvigbhiḥ by officiating priests, upadiṣṭa: advised, ayam this solution, purā ancient, vṛtta: happened, mayā śruta: heard by me.

The charioteer tells the king in privacy that he has heard the advice given by the offciating priests.
sanatkumārō bhagavānpūrvaṅ kathitavānkathām.

ṛṣīṇāṅ sannidhau rājan! tava putrāgamaṅ prati৷৷1.9.2৷৷


rājan O! King, bhagavān possessing divinity, sanatkumāra: Sanatkumara, tava your, putrāgamaṅ prati about the birth of your sons, kathām story, ṛṣīṇāṅ sannidhau in the presence of sages, pūrvam earlier, kathitavān narrated.

"O king, the divine Sanatkumara had narrated a story about your posterity in the presence of sages.
kāśyapasyatu putrō.sti vibhaṇḍaka iti śruta:.

ṛṣyaśṛṅga iti khyātastasya putrō bhaviṣyati৷৷1.9.3৷৷


kāśyapasya for Kasyapa, vibhaṇḍaka: iti named Vibhandaka, śruta: famous, putra: asti has a son, tasya for him, ṛṣyaśṛṅga iti named Rsyasringa, khyāta: well-known, putra: son bhaviṣyati will be born.

Kasyapa has a famous son named Vibhandaka. It was prophesied that he would have a son named Rsyasringa.
sa vanē nityasaṅvṛddhō munirvanacarassadā .

nānyaṅ jānāti viprēndrō nityaṅ pitranuvartanāt ৷৷1.9.4৷৷


vanē in the forest, nityasaṅvṛddha: grown up, sadā always, vanacara: a person moving in the forest, viprēndra: foremost among brahmins, sa: muni: that sage, nityam always, pitranuvartanāt by following his father, anyam others, na jānāti will not know.

Grown up in the forest and always moving with his father, that sage knows none other than his father.
dvaividhyaṅ brahmacaryasya bhaviṣyati mahātmana:.

lōkēṣu prathitaṅ rājanvipraiśca kathitaṅ sadā৷৷1.9.5৷৷


rājan O! King, mahātmana: eminet one, lōkēṣu in the worlds, prathitam celebrated, sadā always, viprai: by brahmins, kathitam described, brahmacaryasya of Brahmacharya (life of celebacy), dvaividhyam two-fold, bhaviṣyati will happen.

O eminent king, sage Rsyasringa celebrated in the three worlds who practises a twofold brahmacharya life (life of celebacy) described by brahmins (as vratitva and prajapatya).
tasyaivaṅ vartamānasya kālassamabhivartata .

agniṅ śuśrūṣamāṇasya pitaraṅ ca yaśasvinam৷৷1.9.6৷৷


agnim fire-god, yaśasvinam enowned, pitaram ca his father also, śuśrūṣamāṇasya while attending, ēvam in this manner, vartamānasya living, tasya for him, kāla: time, samabhivartata will be spent.

Worshipping the fire-god and attending on his renowned father, he will spend a long time living in this manner (practising vratitva mode of brahmacharya).
ētasminnēva kālē tu rōmapāda: pratāpavān.

aṅgēṣu prathitō rājā bhaviṣyati mahābala:৷৷ 1.9.7৷৷


ētasminnēva kālē at this time, aṅgēṣu in the country of Anga, pratāpavān mighty, mahābala: possessing great strength, prathita: celebrated, rōmapāda: king Romapada, bhaviṣyati will be living.

At this time a powerful king Romapada, mighty and celebrated would be living in the country of Anga.
tasya vyatikramādrājñō bhaviṣyati sudāruṇā .

anāvṛṣṭissughōrā vai sarvabhūtabhayāvahā ৷৷1.9.8৷৷


tasya that, rājña: king, vyatikramāt violation of code of conduct, sudāruṇā sughōrā dreadful, sarvabhūtabhayāvahā frightening all living beings, anāvṛṣṭi: drought, bhaviṣyati will set in.

Because of violation of code of conduct by the king, a terrible, dreadful drought frightening all living beings will set in the kingdom.
anāvṛṣṭyāṅ tu vṛttāyāṅ rājā du:khasamanvita:.

brāhmaṇānśrutavṛddhāṅśca samānīya pravakṣyati৷৷ 1.9.9৷৷


anāvṛṣṭyām when drought, vṛttāyām will be prevailing, rājā king, du:khasamanvita: filled with grief, śrutavṛddhān men who grow old by learning, brāhmaṇān brahmins, samānīya summoning, pravakṣyati will say.

With drought prevailing, the grief-stricken king, would summon all those grown old with learning and tell them.
bhavantaśśrutadharmāṇō lōkacāritravēdina: .

samādiśantu niyamaṅ prāyaścittaṅ yathā bhavēt ৷৷1.9.10৷৷


bhavanta: all of you, śrutadharmāṇa: are conversant in duties (enjoined by scriptures), lōkacāritravēdina: well-versed in the ways of the world, yathā in whichever manner, prāyaścittam expiation, bhavēt happens, niyamam religious observance, samādiśantu instruct.

vakṣyanti tē mahīpālaṅ brāhmaṇā vēdapāragā:.

vibhaṇḍakasutaṅ rājansarvōpāyairihānaya৷৷1.9.11৷৷


vēdapāragā: those learned in vedas, tē brāhmaṇā: those brahmins, mahīpālam addressing the king, vakṣyanti will say, rājan O king!, vibhaṇḍakasutam son of sage Vibhandaka, Rsyasringa, sarvōpāyai: by all means, iha here, ānaya bring.

Those brahmins versed in the Vedas, said, to 'O king! bring here Rsyasringa, son of the sage Vibhandaka by all means'.
ānāyya ca mahīpāla! ṛśyaśṛṅgaṅ susatkṛtam.

prayaccha kanyāṅ śāntāṅ vai vidhinā susamāhita: ৷৷1.9.12৷৷


mahīpāla O! Monarch, susatkṛtam greatly honoured, ṛśyaśṛṅgam Rsyasringa, ānāyya having brought, samāhita: with due reverence, kanyām your daughter, śāntām Shanta, vidhinā according to religious ceremonies, prayaccha offer.

"O monarch, on having brought Rsyasringa here, honour him, and offer him your daughter Santa with due reverence.
tēṣāṅ tu vacanaṅ śrutvā rājā cintāṅ prapatsyatē .

kēnōpāyēna vai śakya ihānētuṅ sa vīryavān ৷৷1.9.13৷৷


tēṣām their, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, rājā king, vīryavān with controlled senses, saḥ he, iha here, ānētum to bring, kēna upāyēna by what means, śakya: capable of being done, cintām contemplating, prapatsyatē will obtain.

On hearing their words, the king in a thoughtful mood said, 'How can the mighty sage be brought here'?
tatō rājā viniścitya saha mantribhirātmavān.

purōhitamamātyāṅśca tata: prēṣyati satkṛtān৷৷1.9.14৷৷


tata: thereafter, ātmavān intelligent, rājā king, mantribhi: saha in consultation with his ministers, viniścitya having decided, tata: thereafter, satkṛtān duly honouring, purōhitam priest, amātyāṅśca counsellors, prēṣyati send on a mission.

Thereafter the confident king, having decided, in consultation with his ministers to bring him (Rsyasringa), sent the priest with the counsellors on this mission.
tē tu rājñō vacaśśruśṛtvā vyathitā vinatānanā:.

na gacchēma ṛṣērbhītā anunēṣyanti taṅ nṛpam ৷৷ 1.9.15৷৷


tē they, rājña: king's, vaca: words, śrutvā having heard, ṛṣē: from the Rishi, bhītā: frightened, vyathitā: distressed, vinatānanā: with faces bent down, na gacchēma we will not go, tam that, nṛpam king, anunēṣyanti will appeal.

On hearing the king's words, distressed and frightened by rishi's power, they appealed to the king, faces bent down, 'We will not go'.
vakṣyanti cintayitvā tē tasyōpāyāṅśca tatkṣamān.

ānēṣyāmō vayaṅ vipraṅ na ca dōṣō bhaviṣyati৷৷ 1.9.16৷৷


tē they, cintayitvā having thought about it, tatkṣamān useful in bringing him, upāyān means, tasya tē for that king, vakṣyanti will tell, vayam we, vipram that sage, ānēṣyāma: will bring, dōṣa: blame, na bhaviṣyati ca will not accrue.

After thinking about the means to be employed to bring the rishi to the court, they told him they would bring the sage if they are not to blame (in case anything untoward
happens).
ēvamaṅgādhipēnaiva gaṇikābhi: ṛṣēssuta:.

ānītō.varṣayaddēvaśśāntā cāsmai pradīyatē৷৷1.9.17৷৷


ēvam in this way, aṅgādhipēna by the king of Anga region, Romapada, gaṇikābhi: with the help of courtesans, ṛṣē: suta: son of sage Vibhandaka, ānīta: was brought, dēva: god (Indra), avarṣayat poured rains, asmai for Rsyasringa, śāntā Shanta, pradīyatē ca will be offered.

Thus with the help of courtesans of the king of Anga, when the son of the sage (Rsyasringa) was brought rains followed. The king offered his daughter Santa (in marriage to the sage).
ṛśyaśṛṅgastu jāmātā putrāṅstava vidhāsyati.

sanatkumārakathitamētāvadvyāhṛtaṅ mayā৷৷1.9.18৷৷


jāmātā son-in-law, ṛśyaśṛṅgastu Rsyasringa, tava your, putrān sons, vidhāsyati will ordain to be born, ētāvat till that instance, sanatkumārakathitam the account communicated by Sanatkumara, mayā by me, vyāhṛtam told to you.

'Risyasringa, your son-in-law, would help you to obtain sons'. Thus said Sanathkumara which I have related to you.
atha hṛṣṭō daśarathassumantraṅ pratyabhāṣata.

yatharśyaśṛṅgastvānītō vistarēṇa tvayōcyatām৷৷1.9.19৷৷


atha now, hṛṣṭa: pleased, daśaratha: king Dasaratha, sumantraṅ prati addressing Sumantra, abhāṣata spoke, ṛṣyaśṛṅga: Rsyasringa, yathā by whatever means, ānīta: was brought, tvayā by you, vistarēṇa in detail, ucyatām be described.

Thereupon Dasaratha, pleased, (with him), said to Sumantra, "Describe in detail the means by which Rsyasringa was brought (to the court of Romapada)".
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē navamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the ninth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana of the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
