[Meeting of Bharata and Rama --- Rama enquires about his father and others --- about Bharata's rule at Ayodhya.]

jaṭilaṅ cīravasanaṅ prāñjaliṅ patitaṅ bhuvi.

dadarśa rāmō durdarśaṅ yugāntē bhāskaraṅyathā৷৷2.100.1৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, jaṭilam wearing matted locks, cīravasanam wearing bark robes, prāñjalim with folded palms, bhuvi on the ground, patitam fallen, yugāntē at the time of dissolution of the world, bhāskaraṅ yathā like sun, durdarśam difficult to look at, dadarśa beheld.

Rama beheld Bharata with matted locks and robes of bark fallen down on the ground with folded hands like the Sun at the time of dissolution of the world. It was really difficult to look at him.
kathaṅcidabhivijñāya vivarṇavadanaṅ kṛśam.

bhrātaraṅ bharataṅ rāmaḥ parijagrāha bāhunā৷৷2.100.2৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, vivarṇavadanam of pallid countenance, kṛśam emaciated, bhrātaram brother, bharatam Bharata, kathaṅcit with great difficulty, abhivijñāya having recognised, bāhūnā with his arm, parijagrāha caught hold of.

Rama found it extremely difficult to recognise Bharata with his emaciated body and pallid face. He held him in his arms and lifted him.
āghrāya rāmastaṅ mūrdhni pariṣvajya ca rāghavaḥ.

aṅkē bharatamārōpya paryapṛcchatsamāhitaḥ৷৷2.100.3৷৷


rāghavaḥ born in the race of Raghu, rāmaḥ Rama, taṅ bharatam to that Bharata, mūrdhni on the forehead, āghrāya having kissed, pariṣvajya ca and also embracing, aṅkē on his lap, ārōpya
making him sit, samāhitaḥ with composed mind, paryapṛcchat enquired.

Born in the race of Raghu, Rama embraced Bharata and kissed him on his forehead. Placing him on his lap, he enquired thus with a composed mind:
kva nu tē.bhūtpitā tāta yadaraṇyaṅ tvamāgataḥ.

na hi tvaṅ jīvatastasya vanamāgantumarhasi৷৷2.100.4৷৷


tāta O dear, tvam you, āraṇyam to the forest, yat āgataḥ now that you have come, tē pitā our father, kva nu where, abhūt was he, tasya he, jīvataḥ while living, tvam you, vanam to the forest, āgantum to come, na arhasi hi does not behove you.

O dear, now that you have come to the forest, where is our father king Dasaratha? You ought not come to the forest while he is living.
cirasya bata paśyāmi dūrādbharatamāgatam.

duṣpratīkamaraṇyē.smin kiṅ tāta vanamāgataḥ৷৷2.100.5৷৷


asmin araṇyē to this forest, dūrāt from a distance, āgatam have come, duṣpratīkaṅ of emaciated limbs, bharatam Bharata, cirasya after a long time, paśyāmi I see, bata it is a pity, tāta dear brother, vanam to the forest, kim why, āgataḥ did you come?

You have come a long distance (from Ayodhya) to this forest, O Bharata! It is a pity, dear brother, to see you after a long time, so emaciated. What brings you to the forest?
kacciddhārayatē tāta rājā yattvamihā.gataḥ.

kaccinna dīna ssahasā rājā lōkāntaraṅ gataḥ৷৷2.100.6৷৷


tāta dear child, tvam you, iha now, yat āgataḥ that you have come here, rājā king Dasaratha, kacciddārayatē Is he surviving, I trust so?, rājā king Dasaratha, dīnaḥ dejected, sahasā immediately, lōkāntaram to the other world, na gataḥ kaccit I hope he did not depart.

My dear (brother), now that you have come here, I trust, king Dasaratha is keeping good health and hope, he has not departed prematurely in despondency for the other world.
kaccitsaumya na tē rājyaṅ bhraṣṭaṅ bālasya śāśvatam.

kaccicchuśrūṣasē tāta pitaraṅ satyavikramam৷৷2.100.7৷৷


saumya O gentle one, bālasya young ones, tē your, śāśvatam permanent, rājyam kingdom, na bhraṣṭaṅ kaccit I trust it has not been forfeited, tāta dear child, satyavikramam a man whose prowess is truthfulness, pitaram father, śuśrūṣasē kaccit I trust you are looking after.

O gentle one, being young and inexperienced, I trust, you have not forfeited the kingdom for ever. Dear child, I trust, you are looking after father whose prowess is his truthfulness.
kacciddhaśarathō rājā kuśalī satyasaṅṅgaraḥ.

rājasūyāśvamēdhānāmāhartā dharmaniścayaḥ৷৷2.100.8৷৷


satyasaṅṅgaraḥ who is true to his promise, rājasūyāśvamēdhānām Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices, āhartā performer, dharmaniścayaḥ firm adherent of righteousness, rājā daśarathaḥ king Dasaratha, kaccit kuśalī I trust he is in good health.

I trust king Dasaratha, who is true to his promise, a performer of Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices and a firm adherent of righteousness is in good health.
sa kaccidbrāhmaṇō vidvān dharmanityō mahādyutiḥ.

ikṣvākūṇāmupādhyāyō yathāvattāta pūjyatē৷৷2.100.9৷৷


tāta dear child, brāhmaṇaḥ brahmin (versed in the Vedas), vidvān learned, dharmanityaḥ ever fixed in virtues, mahādyutiḥ effulgent, saḥ that, ikṣvākūṇām Ikshvaku's, upādhyāyaḥ preceptor, yathāvat as usual, pūjyatē kaccit I trust he is being honoured.

O dear child! I trust, the family preceptor of the Ikshvakus, Vasistha, the brahmin (versed in the Vedas), who is learned, ever fixed in virtues and effulgent is being honoured as usual.
sā tāta kaccitkausalyā sumitrā ca prajāvatī.

sukhinī kaccidāryā ca dēvī nandati kaikayī৷৷2.100.10৷৷


tāta dear child, sā kausalyā that Kausalya, sukhinī kaccit trust she is happy, prajāvatī mother of excellent progeny, sumitrā ca Sumitra too, āryā noble, dēvī queen, kaikayī Kaikeyi, nandati kaccit I trust she is delightful.

Dear child! I trust, Kausalya and Sumitra, mothers of an excellent progeny are happy. I trust, the noble queen Kaikeyi is happy too.
kaccidvinayasampannaḥ kulaputrō bahuśrutaḥ.

anasūyuranudraṣṭā satkṛtastē purōhitaḥ৷৷2.100.11৷৷


vinayasampannaḥ one who is endowed with modesty, kulaputraḥ born of high family, bahuśrutaḥ conversant in scriptures, anasūyuḥ free from envy, anudraṣṭā one who can give directions, purōhitaḥ priest, tē to (by) you, satkṛtaḥ kaccit I trust, you honour.

I trust, you continue to honour the family priest (Suyajna, son of Vasistha) who is endowed with modesty, born of high family, conversant in scriptures, free from envy and who can give you directions with regard to your duties.
kaccidagniṣu tē yuktō vidhijñō matimānṛjuḥ.

hutaṅ ca hōṣyamāṇaṅ ca kālē vēdayatē sadā৷৷2.100.12৷৷


tē your, agniṣu sacred fires, yuktaḥ employed, vidhijñaḥ knower of ritual precepts, matimān sagacious, ṛjuḥ upright, sadā always, hutaṅ ca what was offered as oblation, hōṣyamāṇaṅ ca what is going to be offered as oblation, kālē at an appropriate time, vēdayatē kaccit I trust
he informs.

I trust, the sagacious priest who knows ritual precepts, who is upright and is employed to take care of your sacred fires, informs you always regarding what was offered and what is to be offered as oblation at appropriate time.
kacciddēvānpitrūn mātṛrgurūnpitṛsamānapi.

vṛddhāṅśca tāta! vaidyāṅśca brahmāṇāṅścābhimanyasē৷৷2.100.13৷৷


tāta! dear, dēvān gods, pitrūn fathers, mātaṛ: mothers, gurūn teachers, pitṛsamānapi relations equal to your father, vṛddhāṅśca aged people, vaidyāṅśca physicians, brāhmaṇāṅśca brahmins, abhimanyasē kaccit I trust you are paying homage.

Dear brother, I trust you continue to pay homage to gods, father, mothers, teachers, relations equal to your father, aged people, physicians and brahmins.
iṣvastravarasampannamarthaśāstra viśāradam.

sudhanvānamupādhyāyaṅ kaccittvaṅ tāta! manyasē৷৷2.100.14৷৷


tāta! dear child, iṣvastravarasampannam he who is furnished with excellent arrows and other weapons, arthaśāstraviśāradam master in state craft, upādhyāyam teacher, sudhanvānam Sudhanva, tvam you, manyasē kaccit I hope you pay respect.

I hope you treat with respect Sudhanva who is equipped with the most formidable arrows and other weapons propelled by mantras and a master in the science of state-craft.
kaccidātmasamā śśūrā śśrutavantō jitēndriyāḥ.

kulīnāścēṅgitajñāśca kṛtāstē tāta! mantriṇaḥ৷৷2.100.15৷৷


tāta O dear, ātmasamāḥ men equal to you, śūrāḥ brave men, śrutavantaḥ learned men, jitēndriyāḥ men with self-control, kulīnāśca men of noble birth, iṅgitajñāśca men skilled in guessing
from hints, tē to you, mantriṇaḥ as ministers, kṛtāḥ kaccit I hope you have appointed.

I hope, dear brother, you have appointed men who are brave, learned, self-controlled, of noble birth and skilled in guessing from hints.
mantrō vijayamūlaṅ hi rājñāṅ bhavati rāghava.

susaṅvṛtō mantradharairamātyai śśāstrakōvidaiḥ৷৷2.100.16৷৷


rāghava O Bharata, śāstrakōvidaiḥ by men learned in scriptures, mantradharaiḥ by those who can withhold proper counselling, amātyaiḥ by ministers, susaṅvṛtaḥ well-guarded, mantraḥ advice, rājñām to the king, vijayamūlam root of victory, bhavati hi will become.

O Bharata! the well-guarded advice of ministers, learned in scriptures and capable of proper counselling, is the root of victory for kings, specially when the advice is kept in confidence.
kaccinnidrāvaśaṅ naiṣīḥ kaccitkālē prabudadhyasē.

kacciccāpararātrēṣu cintiyasyarthanaipuṇam৷৷2.100.17৷৷


nidrāvaśam controlled by sleep, naiṣīḥ kaccit are you not, I trust, kālē at appropriate time, prabudhyasē kaccit are awake, I hope, apararātrēṣu in the early hours, arthanaipuṇam about judicious statecraft, cintayasi kaccit are you thinking, I trust.

I trust you are not under the grip of sleep but wake up at appropriate times, I hope you always think of the means of judicious statecraft during the last part of the night.
kaccinmantrayasē naikaḥ kaccinna bahubhissaha.

kaccittē mantritō mantrō rāṣṭraṅ na paridhāvati৷৷2.100.18৷৷


ēkaḥ alone, na mantrayasē kaccit you are not planning, I hope, bahubhissaha with many, na kaccit hope you are not discussing, mantritaḥ when decided, tē mantraḥ that decision, rāṣṭram about the kingdom, na paridhāvati kaccit does not run through, I trust.

I hope you neither decide alone nor discuss with many. I trust a decision once made by you is not leaked in the kingdom.
kaccidarthaṅ viniścitya laghumūlaṅ mahōdayam.

kṣipramārabhasē kartuṅ na dīrghayasi rāghava৷৷2.100.19৷৷


rāghava O Bharata, laghumūlam with a little effort, mahōdayam yielding great result, artham an endeavour, viniścitya having determined, kṣipram quickly, kartum to execute, ārabhasē kaccit are commencing, na dīrghayasi are not postponing unduly.

O Bharata, having determined on an endeavour involving a little effort and yielding great results, I trust you commence to execute it quickly without procrastination?
kaccittu sukṛtānyēva kṛtarūpāṇi vā punaḥ.

vidustē sarvakāryāṇi na kartavyāni pārthivāḥ৷৷2.100.20৷৷


pārthivāḥ other kings, sukṛtānyēva well-accomplished acts only, punaḥ again, kṛtarūpāṇi vā or almost accomplished, tē your, sarvakāryāṇi all those endeavours, viduḥ kaccit are informed, kartavyāni endeavours intended to be performed in future, na are not revealed.

I trust, other kings come to know of your endeavours only when your endeavours suceed or about to succeed. I hope, efforts intended to be made in future are not revealed to them beforehand.
kaccinnatarkairyuktyā vā yē cāpyaparikīrtitāḥ.

tvayā vā tavāmātyairbudhyatē tāta mantritam৷৷2.100.21৷৷


tātaḥ dear, tvayā vā by you, tava your, amātyairvā or by ministers, mantritam determination, tarkaiḥ by conjecture, yuktyā vā or by inference, yē cāpi other means, aparikīrtitāḥ so far not been revealed, (with those means or by others), kaccinna budhyatē I hope are not known.

Dear brother, I hope others are not able to understand your determination or those of your ministers, either by conjecture or by inference or through other means without being revealed either by you or by your ministers.
kaccitsahasrānmūrkhāṇāmēkamicchasi paṇḍitam.

paṇḍitō hyarthakṛcchrēṣu kuryānniśrēyasaṅ mahat৷৷2.100.22৷৷


mūrkhāṇām among fools, sahasrāt in preferance to a thousand, ēkam single, paṇḍitam wise man, iccasi kaccit I hope are preferring, arthakṛcchēṣu in difficult situations, paṇḍitaḥ a wise man, mahat immense, niśrēyasam help, kuryāt will render.

I hope by setting aside a thousand fools, you prefer a single wise man. A wise man will be of immense help in difficult situations.
sahasrāṇyapi mūrkhāṇāṅ yudyupāstē mahīpatiḥ.

athavāpyayutānyēva nāsti tēṣu sahāyatā৷৷2.100.23৷৷


mahīpatiḥ king, mūrkhāṇām fools, sahasrāṇi in thousands, athavā or else, ayutānyēva or tens of thousands, upāstē yadyapi even if he seeks assistance, tēṣu among them, sahāyatā help, nāsti not there.

Even if the king seeks the assistance from thousands or tens of thousands of fools, they cannot render any help to him.
ēkō.pyamātyō mēdhāvī śūrō dakṣō vicakṣaṇaḥ.

rājānaṅ rājaputraṅ vā prāpayēnmahatīṅ śriyam৷৷2.100.24৷৷


mēdhāvī prudent, śūraḥ brave, dakṣaḥ skilful, vicakṣaṇaḥ clear-sighted man, ēkaḥ a single one, amātyaḥ api even minister, rājānam the king, rājaputraṅ vā or a prince, śriyam prosperity, prāpayēt can bring.

A single clear-sighted minister who is prudent, brave and skilful can bring about great
prosperity to a king or a prince.
kaccinmukhyā mahātsvēva madhyamēṣu ca madhyamāḥ.

jaghanyāśca jaghanyēṣu bhṛtyāḥ karmasu yōjitāḥ৷৷2.100.25৷৷


mukhyāḥ important, bhṛtyāḥ servants, mahatsu in important, karmasu ēva in tasks, yōjitāḥ kaccit have been employed, I hope, madhyamāḥ mediocre men, madhyamēṣu to the mediocre tasks, jaghanyāḥ tu low people, jaghanyēṣu in the lower tasks, yōjitā kaccit are employed, I hope.

I hope you have employed highly competent servants for important tasks, mediocre servants in mediocre tasks and low people in inferior tasks.
amātyānupadhātītānpitṛpaitāmahāñchucīn.

śrēṣṭhāṅchrēṣṭhēṣukaccitvaṅ niyōjayasi karmasu৷৷2.100.26৷৷


upadhātītān unyielding to bribery and other temptations, pitṛpaitāmahān men who hold hereditary positions, śucīn full of integrity, śrēṣṭhān eminent, amātyān ministers, tvam you, śrēṣṭhēṣu for superior, karmasu for tasks, niyōjayasi kaccit I hope you are assigning.

I hope you are assigning ministers, who are unyielding to bribery and other temptations, holding positions hereditarily and who are full of integrity and eminence, with superior tasks.
kaccinnōgrēṇa daṇḍēna bhṛśamudvējitaprajam.

rāṣṭraṅ tavānujānanti mantriṇaḥ kaikayīsuta৷৷2.100.27৷৷


kaikayīsuta O Bharata, ugrēṇa by severe, daṇḍēna with punishment, bhṛśam excessively, tava rāṣṭram your kingdom, udvējitaprajam citizens being agitated, mantriṇaḥ ministers, nānujānanti kaccit I suppose will not permit so.

Are not the citizens of your kingdom agitated at severe punishment meted out to them reproaching your ministers?
kaccittvāṅ nāvajānanti yājakāḥ patitaṅ yathā.

ugrapratigrahītāraṅ kāmayānamiva striyaḥ৷৷2.100.28৷৷


yājakāḥ performers of sacrifice, ugrapratigrahītāram accepting unmerited charity, patitaṅ yathā like an outcaste, striyaḥ women, kāmayānam iva to a lustful one, tvām you, nāvajānanti kaccit hope they are not insulting you.

Just like a performer of sacrifice scorns at an outcaste or a woman scorns at a lustful lover, do the subjects not scorn you for collecting taxes more than what is due?
upāyakuśalaṅ vaidyaṅ bhṛtyasaṅdūṣaṇē ratam.

śūramaiśvaryakāmaṅ ca yō na hanti sa hanyatē৷৷2.100.29৷৷


upāyakuśalam skilled in contrivances, vaidyam learned person, śūram warrior, aiśvaryakāmaṅ ca passionate for wealth, bhṛtyasaṅdūṣaṇē in corrupting the minds of servants and making them revolt against their master, ratam one who is engaged, yaḥ such man, na hanti will not kill, saḥ that man, hanyatē will be killed.

A learned person but skilled in contrivances, a warrior with passion for wealth and a man ever engaged in corrupting the minds of servants must be slain. A king who does not kill them is himself killed in due course.
kacciddhṛṣṭaśca śūraśca matimān dhṛtimān śuciḥ.

kulīnaścānuraktaśca dakṣassēnāpatiḥ kṛtaḥ৷৷2.100.30৷৷


hṛṣṭaśca cheerful, śūraśca brave, matimān sagacious, dhṛtimān steadfast, śuciḥ honest, kulīnaśca born of good family, anuraktaśca also loyal, dakṣaḥ efficient, sēnāpatiḥ chief of army, kṛtaḥ kaccit I hope has been appointed.

I trust you have appointed a man who is cheerful, brave, sagacious, steadfast, honest, of a good family, loyal and efficient as the army chief.
balavantaśca kaccittē mukhyā yudhdaviśāradāḥ.

dṛṣṭāpadānā vikrāntāstvayā satkṛtyamānitāḥ৷৷2.100.31৷৷


balavantaḥ powerful, yudhdaviśāradāḥ skilled in war, dṛṣṭāpadānāḥ men with proven herioc exploits, vikrāntāḥ courageous men, tē mukhyāḥ those prominent soldiers, tvayā by you, satkṛtya having honoured, mānitāḥ kaccit I hope they are respected.

I trust you honour and respect those prominent soldiers who are courageous, powerful, skilled in war and who have proven heroic exploits.
kaccidbalasya bhaktaṅ ca vētanaṅ ca yathōcitam.

samprāptakālaṅ dātavyaṅ dadāsi na vilambasē৷৷2.100.32৷৷


balasya of the army, dātavyam to be given, bhaktaṅ ca food (rations), yathōcitam suitable, vētanaṅ ca wages, samprāptakālam in due time, dadāsi kaccit I trust you are paying, na vilambasē not delaying.

I trust you distribute rations and wages to your army in due time without making delay.
kālātikramaṇāccaiva bhaktavētanayōrbhṛtāḥ.

bhartuḥ kupyanti duṣyanti sō.nartha ssumahān smṛtaḥ৷৷2.100.33৷৷


bhṛtāḥ (dependent) attendants, bhaktavētanayōḥ regarding food materials and wages, kālātikramaṇāt beyond stipulated time, bhartuḥ about the masters, kupyanti will be incensed, duṣyanti will become corrupted, saḥ that one, sumahān very great, anarthaḥ calamity, smṛtaḥ has been stated in the scriptures.

It has been mentioned in the scriptures that if provisions and wages are not paid in stipulated time, the dependent attendants will be incensed with their masters and will turn hostile and become corrupt, leading to great calamity.
kaccitsarvē.nuraktāstvāṅ kulaputrāḥ pradhānataḥ.

kaccitprāṇāṅ stavārthēṣu santyajanti samāhitāḥ৷৷2.100.34৷৷


sarvē all men, pradhānataḥ especially, kulaputrāḥ men of our family, tvām to you, anuraktāḥ kaccit I hope they are loyal, samāhitāḥ men with steady mind, tava arthēṣu for your cause, prāṇān life, kaccit santyajanti I hope are ready to sacrifice.

I hope all men of a good family, especially those who belong to our race, are loyal to you and are ready to sacrifice their lives for your cause.
kaccijjānapadō vidvāndakṣiṇaḥ pratibhānavān.

yathōktavādī dūtastē kṛtō bharata! paṇḍitaḥ৷৷2.100.35৷৷


bharata! O Bharata, jānapadaḥ one who is born in your country, vidvān well-informed, dakṣiṇaḥ favourable, pratibhānavān one with quick understanding, yathōktavādī one who repeats, paṇḍitaḥ expert man, tē to (by) you, dūta: as envoy, kṛtaḥ kaccit I hope has been chosen.

O Bharata, I hope you have chosen as your envoy an expert born in your own country, well-informed, skilful and quick to understand one who repeats and reports (exactly) what has been told.
kaccidaṣṭādaśānyēṣu svapakṣē daśa pañca ca.

tribhistribhiravijñātairvētsi tīrthāni cārakaiḥ৷৷2.100.36৷৷


anyēṣu on enemy's side, aṣṭādaśa eighteen, tīrthāni officials by close watch, svapakṣē on your side, daśa pañca ca ten plus five (fifteen), avijñātaiḥ by those unrecognisable by others, tribhiḥ tribhiḥ three for each official, cārakaiḥ spies, vētsi kaccit I hope you acquire information.

I hope you collect information (of their secret efforts) intelligently through unrecognisable spies with three of them closely watching each of the eighteen officials (there are eighteen categories of officials in a kingdom) of the enemy's side and fifteen
(officials) on your side.
kaccidvyapāstānahitānpratiyātāṅśca sarvadā.

durbalānanavajñāya vartasē ripusūdana৷৷2.100.37৷৷


ripusūdana O slayer of foes, vyapāstān defeated, pratiyātāṅśca having gone back, durbalān weak, ahitān foes, sarvadā at all times, anavajñāya without neglecting, vartasē kaccit I hope you remain alert.

O slayer of foes, I hope you are always alert about your foes who were defeated by you and have come back. You should not ignore your enemies thinking they are weak.
kaccinna laukāyatikānbrāhmaṇāṅstāta sēvasē৷৷

anarthakuśalā hyētē bālāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ৷৷2.100.38৷৷


tāta O dear child, laukāyatikān thinking of this world only, those atheists, brāhmaṇān brahmins, na sēvasē kaccit I hope you are not keeping company, paṇḍitamāninaḥ fancying them as learned, bālāḥ foolish, ētē these people, anarthakuśalāḥ hi adept in bringing disaster indeed.

Dear brother, I hope you do not serve those brahmins who are atheists, who foolishly think of this world alone and fancy themselves as learned. They only bring disasters.
dharmaśāstrēṣu mukhyēṣu vidyamānēṣu durbudhāḥ.

buddhimānvīkṣikīṅ prāpya nirarthaṅ pravadanti tē৷৷2.100.39৷৷


durbudhāḥ these superficial fellows, mukhyēṣu among the principal, dharmaśāstrēṣu in scriptures, vidyamānēṣu while existing, ānvīkṣikīm relating to the science of logic, buddhim intelligence, prāpya having obtained, nirartham futile, pravadanti argue.

While principal scriptures do exist, these superficial fellows take resort to the science of logic based on abstract reasoning, and indulge in futile talks.
vīrairadhyuṣitāṅ pūrvamasmākaṅ tāta! pūrvakaiḥ.

satyanāmāṅ dṛḍha dvārāṅ hastyaśvarathasaṅkulām৷৷2.100.40৷৷

brāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatriyairvaiśyai ssvakarmanirataissadā.

jitēndriyairmahōtsāhairvṛtāmāryai ssahasraśaḥ৷৷2.100.41৷৷

prāsādairvividhākārairvṛtāṅ vaidyajanākulām.

kaccitsumuditāṅ sphītāmayōdhyāṅ parirakṣasi৷৷2.100.42৷৷


tātā! O dear child, vīraiḥ by the heroic, asmākam our, pūrvakaiḥ by ancestors, pūrvam formerly, adhyuṣitām inhabited, satyanāmām true to its name, dṛḍhadvārām with sturdy gates,
hastyaśvarathasaṅkulām full of elephants, horses and chariots, sadā always, svakarmanirataiḥ engaged in their respective professions, jitēndriyaiḥ by self-controlled men, mahōtsāhaiḥ by highly energetic men, āryaiḥ by venerable men, sahasraśaḥ in their thousands, brāhmaṇaiḥ by brahmins, kṣatriyaiḥ by kshatriyas (warriors), vaiśyaiḥ by vaisyas (merchants), vṛtam surrounded, vividhākāraiḥ of various kinds, prāsādaiḥ with palaces, vṛtām filled with, vaidyajanākulām full of learned people, sumuditām with everything available, sphītām prosperous, ayōdhyām Ayodhya, parirakṣasi kaccit I trust you are protecting.

My dear brother! I trust you are protecting the (impregnable) city of Ayodhya worthy of its name, formerly defended by our heroic ancestors, with its sturdy gates, its elephants, horses and chariots, its thousands of venerable, self-controlled and highly energetic brahmins, kshatriyas and vaisyas engaged in their respective professions, filled with palaces of various kinds, abounding in learned people and a prosperous city where everything is available in abundance.
kacciccaityaśatairjuṣṭa ssuniviṣṭajanākulaḥ.

dēvasthānaiḥ prapābhiśca taṭākaiścōpaśōbhitaḥ৷৷2.100.43৷৷

prahṛṣṭanaranārīkassamājōtsavaśōbhitaḥ.

sukṛṣṭasīmā paśumānhiṅsābhiḥ parivarjitaḥ৷৷2.100.44৷৷

adēvamātṛkō ramya śśvāpadaiḥ parivarjitaḥ.

parityaktō bhayaissarvaiḥ khanibhiścōpaśōbhitaḥ৷৷2.100.45৷৷

vivarjitō naraiḥ pāpairmama pūrvai ssurakṣitaḥ.

kaccijjanapadassphītaḥ sukhaṅ vasati rāghava৷৷2.100.46৷৷


rāghava O Bharata, caityaśataiḥ by hundreds of sanctuaries near villages, juṣṭa: furnished, suniviṣṭajanākulaḥ filled with people where life is made comfortable, dēvasthānaiḥ with shrines, prapābhiśca with centres for providing water, taṭākaiśca with tanks, upaśōbhitaḥ graced with, sukṛṣṭasīmā well-ploughed land, paśumān with excellent cattle, hiṅsābhiḥ with violence, parivarjitaḥ abandoned, adēvamātṛkaḥ not dependant on rain, ramyaḥ enchanting, śvāpadaiḥ with wild animals, parivarjitaḥ devoid of, sarvaiḥ by all kinds, bhayaiḥ of fears, parityaktaḥ expelled,
khanibhiśca with mines, upaśōbhitaḥ adorned with, pāpaiḥ by sinful, naraiḥ with people, vivarjitaḥ deserted, mama my, pūrvaiḥ by ancestors, surakṣitaḥ well-protected, janapada: country, sphītaḥ kaccit I trust is prosperous, sukham comfortably, vasati kaccit I hope they are living.

O Bharata, my country which is marked with hundreds of sanctuaries near villages where life of the people is made comfortable, where there are shrines, water distribution facilities and tanks, which is well-ploughed and rich in cattle-wealth, free from violence and independent of rain. It is enchanting. It is safe from wild animals. With fears expelled, free from sinful people, adorned with mines and well-protected by my ancestors, it is prosperous and I hope people are living comfortably.
kaccittē dayitāssarvē kṛṣigōrakṣajīvinaḥ.

vārtāyāṅ saṅśritastāta! lōkō hi sukhamēdhatē৷৷2.100.47৷৷


tāta! dear child, sarvē all men, kṛṣigōrakṣajīvinaḥ those who live on agriculture and cattle-rearing, tē to you, dayitā kaccit I trust are favourable, vārtāyām in profession (of cattle raising), saṅśritaḥ depending on, lōkaḥ world, sukham happily, ēdhatē hi grows.

I trust all those men who live on agriculture and cattle-rearing are favourable to you.
The world's prosperity, dear brother, grows on the profession of cattle rearing.
tēṣāṅ guptiparīhāraiḥ kaccittē bharaṇaṅ kṛtam.

rakṣyā hi rājñā dharmēṇa sarvē viṣayavāsinaḥ৷৷2.100.48৷৷


guptiparīhāraiḥ by affording protection and through prevention of adversities, tēṣām their, bharaṇam maintenance, tē to you (by you), kṛtaṅ kaccit has been done, I hope, rājñā by the king, viṣayavāsinaḥ those living in the country, sarvē all, dharmēṇa with righteousness, rakṣyāḥ hi are required to be protected.

I trust you nourish them and also afford portection and prevent adversities. A king must protect all those people living in his country in accordanc with righteousness.
kaccistriya ssāntvayasi kaccittāśca surakṣitāḥ.

kaccinna śraddhāsyāsāṅ kaccidguhyaṅ na bhāṣasē৷৷2.100.49৷৷


striyaḥ women, sāntvayasi kaccit I hope you are pacifying, tāḥ they, tē to (by) you, surakṣitāḥ kaccit I trust they are guarded well, āsām words of the women, na śraddhāsyāsāṅ kaccit I trust you believe not, guhyam secret, na bhāṣasē kaccit I trust you do not divulge.

I trust, you keep the women pacified and well-protected, you do not believe their words and do not divulge any secrets to them.
kaccinnāgavanaṅ guptaṅ kaccittē santi dhēnukāḥ.

kaccinna gaṇikāśvānāṅ kuñjarāṇāṅ ca tṛpyasi৷৷2.100.50৷৷


nāgavanam habitat of elephants, guptaṅ kaccit I trust is protected, tē to you, dhēnukāḥ milch cows, santi kaccit I trust you have, gaṇikāśvānām mares, kuñjarāṇāṅca elephants, na tṛpyasi kaccit I trust you are not contented.

I trust, you protect the habitat of elephants and you have a large number of milch cows. I trust you are not contented with the existing number of female and male
elephants and horses.
kacciddarśayasē nityaṅ manuṣyāṇāṅ vibhūṣitam.

utthāyōtthāya pūrvāhṇē rājaputra mahāpathē৷৷2.100.51৷৷


rājaputra O prince! nityam daily, pūrvāhṇē early in the morning, utthāyōtthāya rising early, mahāpathē on the thoroughfare, mānuṣyāṇām to the people, vibhūṣitam well-adorned, darśayasē kaccit I trust you are presenting yourself.

O prince, I trust, you rise early daily and present yourself well-adomed to the people on the thoroughfare.
kaccinna sarvē karmāntāḥ pratyakṣāstē.viśaṅkayā.

sarvē vā punarutsṛṣṭā madhyamēvātra kāraṇam৷৷2.100.52৷৷


sarvē all, karmāntāḥ servants, tē to you, aviśaṅkayā without fear, na pratyakṣāḥ kaccit I trust do not present themselves, sarvē all, utsṛṣṭāḥ vā punaḥ or again (I trust) are not kept in a distance, atra here, madhyamēva middle course, kāraṇam reason for welfare of all the workers.

All the servants, I trust, do not present themselves to you directly. At the same time they do not remain out of sight with fear at a distance. The middle course is the best way for the welfare of every one.
kaccitsarvāṇi durgāṇi dhanadhānyāyudhōdakaiḥ.

yantraiśca paripūrṇāni tathā śilpidhanurdharaiḥ৷৷2.100.53৷৷


sarvāṇi all, durgāṇi the forts, dhanadhānyāyudhōdakaiḥ with wealth, grains, weapons and water, yantraiśca with ammunitions or machines of war, tathā similarly, śilpidhanurdharaiḥ with craftsmen and archers, paripūrṇāni kaccit are adequately provided, I trust.

Hope all the forts are adequately provided with wealth, foodgrains, weapons and water, with machines of war and craftsmen and archers.
āyastē vipulaḥ kaccitkaccidalpatarō vyayaḥ.

apātrēṣu na tē kaccitkōśō gacchati rāghava৷৷2.100.54৷৷


rāghava O Bharata, tē your, āyaḥ revenues, vipulaḥ kaccit are abundant, I trust, vyayaḥ expenditure, alpataraḥ kaccit is much less, I hope, tē your, kōśaḥ treasury, apātrēṣu to undeserving people, na gacchati kaccit does not pass, I trust.

O Bharata, I trust, your revenues are abundant and expenditure much less. I trust you do not give away your treasure to undeserving persons.
dēvatārthē ca pitrarthēbrāhmaṇābhyāgatēṣu ca.

yōdhēṣu mitravargēṣu kaccidgacchati tē vyayaḥ৷৷2.100.55৷৷


tē your, vyayaḥ expenditure, dēvatārthē ca for the sake of the gods, pitrarthē for the sake of ancestors, brāhmaṇābhyāgatēṣu for brahmins and guests, yōdhēṣu on warriors, mitravargēṣu on hordes of friends, gacchati kaccit is being spent I hope.

I trust, you are spending only on gods, ancestors, brahmins, guests, warriors and hosts of friends.
kaccidāryō viśuddhātmā kṣārita ścāparakarmaṇā.

apṛṣṭa śśāstrakuśalairna lōbhādvadhyatē śuciḥ৷৷2.100.56৷৷


viśuddhātmā of pure-hearted man, āryaḥ venerable one, śuciḥ honest, apakarmaṇā with unworthy act, kṣāritaḥ falsely accused of adultery, śāstrakuśalaiḥ by those well-versed in scriptures, apṛṣṭaḥ without consulting, lōbhāt out of avarice, na vadhyatē kaccit I trust is not slain.

I trust a man who is honest, pure-hearted and venerable, falsely accused of adultery is not slain out of avarice without consulting experts in scriptures.
gṛhītaścaiva pṛṣṭaśca kālē dṛṣṭassakāraṇaḥ.

kaccinna mucyatē cōrō dhanalōbhānnararṣabha৷৷2.100.57৷৷


nararṣabha O best among men, kālē at the time of committing theft, dṛṣṭaḥ who has been caught red-handed, gṛhītaścaiva one who is arrested, pṛṣṭaśca one who has been interrogated, sakāraṇaḥ one who has sufficient evidence, cōraḥ thief, dhanalōbhāt out of greed for money, na mucyatē kaccit I hope is not set free.

O best among men! I trust that a thief, caught red-handed and interrogated and has sufficient proof is not set free, out of greed for money.
vyasanē kaccidāḍhyasya durgatasya ca rāghava.

arthaṅ virāgāḥ paśyanti tavāmātyā bahuśrutāḥ৷৷2.100.58৷৷


rāghava O Bharata, bahuśrutāḥ well-informed, tava amātyāḥ your ministers, āḍhyasya of a rich man, durgatasya ca to a poorman, vyasanē in times of hardship, artham any matter, virāgāḥ impartially, paśyanti kaccit I trust they look at impartially.

O Bharata, I trust that your ministers are well-informed and look into all matters in times of hardship pertaining to whether a man is rich or poor without any bias to either.
yāni mithyābhiśastānāṅ patantyaśrūṇi rāghava.

tāni putrānpaśūnghnanti prītyarthamanuśāsataḥ৷৷2.100.59৷৷


rāghava Bharata, mithyābhiśastānām of those who are falsely accused, yāni aśrūṇi those tears, patanti fall, tāni they, prītyartham for the sake of pleasure, anuśāsataḥ one who commands, putrānpaśūn his sons and cattle, ghnanti they will destroy.

O Bharata, the tears falling from the eyes of persons, who are falsely accused and punished for the pleasure of the king will destroy his progeny and cattle as well.
kaccidvṛddhāṅśca bālāṅśca vaidyāmukhyāṅśca rāghava.

dānēna manasā vācā tribhirētairbubhūṣasē৷৷2.100.60৷৷


rāghava Bharata, vṛddhāṅśca the old, bālāṅśca the children, vaidyamukhyāṅśca foremost of learned people, dānēna with gifts, manasā with affection, vācā with kind words, ētaiḥ these, tribhiḥ with three, bubhūṣasē kaccit I trust you thrive.

O Bharata, I trust you wish to thrive by treating the old, children and foremost of learned people with the three expedients namely gifts, affection and kind words.
kaccidgurūṅśca vṛddhāṅśca tāpasān dēvatātithīn.

caityāṅśca sarvānsidhdārthānbrāhmaṇāṅśca namasyasi৷৷2.100.61৷৷


gurūṅśca prceptors, vṛddhāṅśca the old, tāpasān the ascetics, dēvatātithīn gods and guests, caityāṅśca shrines, sidhdārthān acomplished men, brāhmaṇāṅśca brahmins, sarvān all, namasyasi kaccit I trust you are paying homage.

I trust you pay homage to the preceptors, the aged ones, ascetics, gods and guests, to shrines and to accomplished brahmins.
kaccidarthēna vā dharmamarthaṅ dharmēṇa vā punaḥ.

ubhau vā prītilōbhēna kāmēna ca na bādhasē৷৷2.100.62৷৷


arthēna with prosperity, dharmaṅ vā or righteousness, dharmēṇa with righteousness, arthaṅ vā prosperity, punaḥ again, prītilōbhēna longing for pleasure, kāmēna with desire for sensual enjoyment, ubhau both, na bādhasē kaccit I trust you are not thwarting.

I trust, righteousness for the sake of prosperity or prosperity for the sake of righteousness or both for the sake of sensual pleasure are not thwarted by you.
kaccidarthaṅ ca dharmaṅ ca kāmaṅ ca jayatāṅ vara.

vibhajya kālē kālajña sarvānvarada sēvasē৷৷2.100.63৷৷


jayatām among the victorious, vara best, kālajña one having the knowledge of time, varada granter of boons (best of men), dharmaṅca righteousness, kāmaṅca legitimate pleasure, sarvān all of them, kālē proper time, vibhajya dividing time for each, sēvasē kaccit I trust you are attending.

O Bharata, the best among the victorious, conversant with timely actions and a bestower of boons! you are the best of men. I trust, you allocate adequate time for attending to all the three expedients of life like dharma, artha and kama.
kaccittē brāhmaṇā śśarma sarvaśāstrārthakōvidāḥ.

āśaṅsantē mahāprājña! paurajānapadaissaha৷৷2.100.64৷৷


mahāprājña! O highly sagacious one, sarvaśāstrārtha kōvidāḥ those who can comprehend the meaning of all scriptures, brāhmaṇāḥ brahmins, paurajānapadaissaha along with the inhabitants of the city and country too, tē your, śarma happiness, āśaṅsantē kaccit I trust they are seeking.

O highly sagacious Bharata, those brahmins who can comprehend the meaning of all scriptures along with the inhabitants of the city and country, I trust, are seeking your happiness.
nāstikyamanṛtaṅ krōdhaṅ pramādaṅ dīrghasūtratām.

adarśanaṅ jñānavatāmālasyaṅ pañcavṛttitām৷৷2.100.65৷৷

ēkacintanamarthānāmanarthajñaiśca mantraṇam.

niścitānāmanārambhaṅ mantrasyāparirakṣaṇam৷৷2.100.66৷৷

maṅgalādyaprayōgaṅ ca pratyutthānaṅ ca sarvataḥ.

kaccitvaṅ varjayasyētānrājadōṣāṅścaturdaśa৷৷2.100.67৷৷


nāstikyam atheism, anṛtam falsehood, krōdham anger, pramādam inattention, dīrghasūtratām procrastination, jñānavatām wise people's, adarśanam evasion, ālasyam indolence, pañcavṛttitām gratification of all five senses, arthānām relating to the affairs (of the kingdom), ēkacintanam thinking alone, anarthajñaiḥ by those proficient in worthless acts, mantraṇam consultation, niścitānām of acts decided upon, anārambham not to implement, mantrasya counsel, aparirakṣaṇam not protecting, maṅlādi beginning of an auspicious note and the like, aprayōgaṅ ca not to practise, sarvataḥ on all sides, pratyutthānaṅ ca attacking all the enemies at a time, ētān all these, caturdaśa fourteen, rājadōṣān defects of the king, tvam you, varjayasi kaccit I trust you eschew.

I trust you eschew the fourteen faults of kings, like atheism, falsehood, anger, inattention, procrastination, evading the wise, indolence, gratification of all five senses, planning alone in the affairs of the kingdom, consultation with people who are proficient in worthless acts, failure to implement decisious, inability to keep the counsel secret and omission of auspicious practices and setting out against all the enemies at a time.
daśapañcacaturvargānsaptavargaṅ ca tattvataḥ.

aṣṭavargaṅ trivargaṅ ca vidyāstisraśca rāghava৷৷2.100.68৷৷

indriyāṇāṅ jayaṅ buddhyā ṣāḍguṇyaṅ daivamānuṣam.

kṛtyaṅ viṅśativargaṅ ca tathā prakṛtimaṇḍalam৷৷2.100.69৷৷

yātrādaṇḍavidhānaṅ ca dviyōnī sandhivigrahau.

kaccidētānmahāprājña yathāvadanumanyasē৷৷2.100.70৷৷


mahāprājñaḥ O highly sagacious, rāghavaḥ Bharata, daśapañcacaturvargān the fifteen of the four-fold divisions, saptavargaṅ ca the seven divisions, aṣṭavargam the eight divisions, trivargaṅ ca the three divisions, tisra: three, vidyāḥ ca kinds of knowledge, indriyāṇām of the senses, jayam victory over, ṣāḍaguṇyam six qualities, daivamānuṣam evils arising from destiny and human agency, kṛtyam kritya, viṅśativargaṅ ca division of twenty, tathā similarly, prakṛtimaṇḍalam Prakriti and Mandalas, yātrādaṇḍavidhānaṅ ca practices of yatra and chastisement, dviyōniḥ two sources of, sandhi vigrahau peace and war, tattvataḥ the true nature, budhdyā by intellect, ētān alone, yathāvat
appropriately, anumanyasē kaccit I trust you follow.

O highly sagacious Bharata, I trust, having understood their true nature you are appropriately following the ten, five and four divisions, the seven divisions, the eight divisions, the three divisions, three kinds of knowledge, victory over the senses, the six qualities, evils arising from destiny and human agency, kritya, division of twenty, similarly Prakriti and Mandalas and two sources of Yatra and chastisement and of peace and war.
mantribhistvaṅ yathōddiṣṭaiścaturbhistribhirēva vā.

kaccitsamastairvyastaiśca mantraṅ mantrayasē mithaḥ৷৷2.100.71৷৷


tvam you, yathōddiṣṭaiḥ as adumbrated in sacred texts, caturbhiḥ by four, tribhirēva vā or three, mantribhiḥ with counsellors, samastai: together, vyastaiśca separately with each one, mitha: in secrecy, mantram counsel, mantrayasē kaccit I trust you deliberate.

I trust you deliberate in secrecy on your counsel with three or four counsellors, together and separately with each one, as laid down in sacred texts.
kaccittē saphalā vēdāḥ kaccittē saphalāḥ kriyāḥ.

kaccittē saphalā dārāḥ kaccittē saphalaṅ śrutam৷৷2.100.72৷৷


tē your knowledge of, vēdāḥ Vedas, saphalāḥ kaccit I trust is fruitful, tē kriyāḥ your acts, saphalā kaccit I trust are productive, tē dārāḥ your wife, saphalāḥ kaccit I trust is useful, tē śrutam the scriptures you have heard, saphalaṅ kaccit I trust, is useful.

I trust, the Vedas you have studied are fruitful, the acts which you commenced are productive, your wife is fruitful (blessed with a son) and the scriptures you studied are useful.
kaccidēṣaiva tē buddhiryathōktā mama rāghava.

āyuṣyā ca yaśasyā ca dharmakāmārtha saṅhitā৷৷2.100.73৷৷


rāghava O Bharata, tē buddhi: your intellect, āyuṣyā is enhancing your life span, yaśasyā ca augmenting your fame, dharmakāmārtha saṅhitā in accordance with righteousness, (legitimate) pleasure and prosperity, mama to (by) me, yathā as, uktā said, ēṣaiva kaccit I trust it is in conformity with that.

O Bharata, I trust your intellect is in conformity with what I said conducive to long life, and fame in accordance with righteousness, (legitimate) pleasure and prosperity.
yāṅ vṛttiṅ vartatē tātō yāṅ ca naḥ prapitāmahāḥ.

tāṅ vṛttiṅ vartasē kaccidyāca satpathagā śubhā৷৷2.100.74৷৷


tātaḥ our father, yām vṛttim whichever course, vartatē is following, yām which course, naḥ our, prapitāmahāḥ followed by ancestors, yā ca satpathagā which one walks the path of truth, śubhā auspicious, tām that, vṛttim course, vartasē kaccit I trust, you follow.

I trust, you walk the auspicious path of truth (virtue) followed by our father and forefathers.
kaccitsvādu kṛtaṅ bhōjyamēkō nāśnāsi rāghava.

kaccidāśaṅsamānēbhyō mitrēbhya ssamprayacchasi৷৷2.100.75৷৷


rāghava Bharata, svādukṛtam prepared deliciously, bhōjyam food, ēkaḥ alone, nāśnāsi kaccit I trust you are not partaking, aśaṅsamānēbhyaḥ to those who desire them, mitrēbhyaḥ to friends, samprayacchasi kaccit I trust you are giving it.

O Bharata, I trust you do not partake delicious food all by yourself, and you share it with your friends when they want it.
rājā tu dharmēṇa hi pālayitvā mahāmatirdaṇḍadharaḥ prajānām.

avāpya katsnāṅ vasudhāṅ yathāvaditaścyuta ssvargamupaiti vidvān৷৷2.100.76৷৷


mahāmati: one who has great wisdom, vidvān learned man, rājā tu as for the king, kṛtsnām entire, vasudhām earth, avāpya having acquired, prajānām for people, daṇḍadharaḥ holding Danda in hand, yathāvat in accordance with tradition, dharmēṇa righteously, pālayitvā having ruled, itaḥ from here, cyutaḥ having been released, svargam heaven, upaiti hi will ascend.

The highly sagacious and learned king, having acquired the entire earth and punishing the people in accordance with tradition and righteously ruling the kingdom, will ascend the his release (from this world).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē śatatamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the hundredth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
