[Rama, Sita and Lakshmana's grief over king Dasaratha's death -- Rama and Lakshmana offer libations of water in Mandakini river]

तां श्रुत्वा करुणां वाचं पितुर्मरणसंहिताम्।

राघवो भरते नोक्तां बभूव गतचेतनः।।2.102.1।।


राघवः one born in the race of the Raghus (Rama), भरतेन by Bharata, उक्ताम् uttered, पितुः father's, मरणसंहिताम् union with death, करुणाम् pitiable, तां those, वाचम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, गत चेतनः unconscious, बभूव became.

Having heard the words of Bharata regarding the death of his father, Rama became unconscious.
तं तु वज्रमिवोत्सृष्टमाहवे दानवारिणा

वाग्वज्रंभरते नोक्त ममनोज्ञं परन्तपः।।2.102.2।।

प्रगृह्य रामो बाहू वैपुष्पिताग्रो यथा द्रुमः।

वने परशुना कृत्तस्तथा भुवि पपात ह।।2.102.3।।


परन्तपः destroyer of enemies, रामः Rama, आहवे in the battle, दानवारिणा by the enemy of demons (Indra), उत्सृष्टम् hurled, वज्रमिव like thunderbolt, अमनोज्ञम् unpleasant, भरतेन by Bharata, उक्तम् spoken, तम् that, वाग्वज्रम् thunderlike words, बाहू both arms, प्रगृह्य stretching forth, वने in the forest, परशुना by an axe, कृत्तः severed, पुष्पिताग्रः with flowering tops, द्रुमः tree, यथा as, तथा like that, भुवि on the ground, पपात ह fell down.

On hearing the thunderlike words spoken by Bharata afflicting the mind, like the
thunderbolt hurled by Indra (enemy of demons) in a battle, Rama, the scorcher of enemies, stretching forth both his arms, fell down on the ground like a tree with flowering tops severed by an axe in the forest.
तथा हि पतितं रामं जगत्यां जगतीपतिम्।

कूलघातपरिश्रान्तं प्रसुप्तमिव कुञ्जरम्।।2.102. 4।।

भ्रातरस्ते महेष्वासं सर्वतश्शोककर्शितम्।

रुदन्तस्सह वैदेह्या सिषिचुस्सलिलेन वै।।2.102.5।।
 

तथा that way, जगत्याम् on the earth, निपतितम् fallen, जगतीपतिम् lord of the world, कूलघातपरिश्रान्तम् exhausted from striking a river bank, प्रसुप्तम् asleep, कुञ्जरम् इव like an elephant, महेष्वासम् a great archer, शोककर्शितम् afflicted with grief, रामम् Rama, सर्वतः on all sides, वैदेह्या सह along with Sita, ते those, भ्रातरः brothers, रुदन्तः lamenting, सलिलेन with waters, सिषिचुः वै sprinkled.

Those brothers on all sides, with Sita lamenting, sprinkled water on Rama, the great archer and lord of the earth who, afflicted with grief, had fallen down on the ground, and was lying like an elephant exhausted from repeatedly striking a river bank.
स तु संज्ञां पुनर्लब्ध्वा नेत्राभ्यामस्रमुत्सृजन्।

उपाक्रामत काकुत्स्थ कृपणं बहु भाषितुम्।।2.102.6।।


सः काकुत्स्थ that Rama, पुनः again, संज्ञाम् consciousness, लब्ध्वा regaining, नेत्राभ्याम् from eyes, अस्रम् tears, उत्सृजन् shedding, कृपणम् piteously, बहु excessively, भाषितुम् to speak, उपाक्रामत started.

On regaining consciousness, shedding tears profusely, Rama again started speaking piteously.
स रामस्स्वर्गतं श्रुत्वा पितरं पृथिवीपतिम्।

उवाच भरतं वाक्यं धर्मात्मा धर्मसंहितम्।।2.102.7।।


धर्मात्मा righteous, सः रामः that Rama, पृथिवीपतिम् lord of the world, पितरम् father, स्वर्गतम् had attained heaven, श्रुत्वा on hearing, भरतम् to Bharata, धर्मसंहितम् that which was in
conformity with his rightful conduct, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said.

On hearing that his father, king Dasaratha, the lord of the world had attained heaven, righteous Rama said to Bharata in conformty with his rightful conduct.
किं करिष्याम्ययोध्यायां ताते दिष्टां गतिं गते।

कस्तां राजवराध्दीनामयोध्यां पालयिष्यति।।2.102.8।।


ताते father, दिष्टां गतिम् the path ordained by the gods, अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, किं करिष्यामि what shall I do, राजवरात् by the best of kings, हीनाम् deprived, ताम् अयोध्याम् that Ayodhya, कः who, पालयिष्यति will rule.

What shall I do in Ayodhya now that my father has followed the path ordained by the gods? Who will rule that Ayodhya deprived of that best of kings?
किं नु तस्य मया कार्यं दुर्जातेन महात्मनः।

यो मृतो मम शोकेन मया चापि न संस्कृतः।।2.102.9।।


यः that king Dasaratha, मम शोकेन of grief on account of me, मृतः died, मया by me, न संस्कृतश्चापि the last rites could not be performed, तस्य for him, महात्मनः for that magnanimous one, दूर्जातेन of unlucky birth, मया by me, किं नु कार्यम् of what use?

I could not even perform the last rites of that magnanimous one who died of grief on account of me. What use is my life with an unlucky birth?
अहो भरत सिद्धार्थो येन राजा त्वयाऽनघ।

शत्रुघ्नेन च सर्वेषु प्रेतकृत्येषु सत्कृतः।।2.102.10।।


अनघ O irreproachable one, भरत Bharata, येन त्वया by you, शत्रुघ्नेन by Satrughna, राजा king, सर्वेषु in all, प्रेतकृत्येषु in last rites, सत्कृतः wellhonoured, सिद्धार्थः you have fulfilled your duty, अहो fortunate indeed.

O irreproachable Bharata, it is gratifying that you and Satrughna are indeed fortunate to have fulfilled your cherished desire since the king was wellhonoured by you with all the obsequial rites.
निष्प्रधानामनेकाग्रां नरेन्द्रेण विनाकृताम्।

निवृत्तवनवासोऽपि नायोध्यां गन्तु मुत्सहे।।2.102.11।।


निवृत्तवनवासोऽपि even after completion of the exile, निष्प्रधानाम् bereft of chief, अनेकाग्रम् directionless, नरेन्द्रेण by the king, विनाकृताम् deprived, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, गन्तुम् to return, न उत्सहे I do not desire.

Even after the completion of my exile I do not wish to return to Ayodhya which is directionless, bereft of its chief, the king.
समाप्तवनवासं मामयोध्यायां परन्तप।

कोऽनु शासिष्यति पुनस्ताते लोकान्तरं गते।।2.102.12।।


परन्तप O subduer of enemies, Bharata, ताते with father, लोकान्तरम् to the other world, गते having gone to, समाप्तवनवासम् on completion the exile, माम् me, पुनः again, अयोध्याम् in Ayodhya, कः who, अनुशासिष्यति guide.

O subduer of enemies, when father has gone to the other world, who will guide me in Ayodhya after I complete my term of exile?
पुरा प्रेक्ष्य सुवृत्तं मां पिता यान्याह सान्त्वयन्।

वाक्यानि तानि श्रोष्यामि कुतश्श्रोत्रसुखान्यहम्।।2.102.13।।


पुरा in the past, पिता father, माम् me, सुवृत्तम् good conduct, प्रेक्ष्य on seeing, सान्त्वयन्
comforting, यानि वाक्यानि such words, आह used to say, श्रोत्र सुखा pleasant to the ears, तानि those words, कुतः from whom, श्रोष्यामि I can hear.

On seeing my good conduct our father used to say comforting words to me. Now
from whom can I hear such words pleasing to the ears?
एवमुक्त्वा स भरतं भार्यामभ्येत्य राघवः।

उवाच शोकसन्तप्तः पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम्।।2.102.14।।


सः राघवः that Rama, भरतम् to Bharata, एवम् in this way, उक्त्वा having said, पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् her face looking like the full Moon, भार्याम् wife, अभ्येत्य having approached, शोकसन्तप्तः overhelmed with grief, उवाच said.

Having thus spoken to Bharata, Rama, overwhelmed with grief, approached his wife Sita whose face looked like the full Moon, and said to her.
सीते मृतस्ते श्वशुरः पित्रा हीनोऽसि लक्ष्मण।

भरतो दुःखमाचष्टे स्वर्गतं पृथिवीपतिम्।।2.102.15।।


सीते O Sita, ते श्वशुरः your fatherinlaw, मृतः is dead, लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, पित्रा father, हीनः असि are deprived of, भरतः Bharata, पृथिवीपतिम् lord of the world, king Dasaratha, स्वर्गतम् as having gone to heaven, दुःखम् sad news, आचष्टे is relating.

O Sita, your fatherinlaw is dead. O Lakshmana, you are deprived of your father. Bharata is relating to me the sad news that king Dasaratha has attained his heavenly abode.
ततो बहुगुणं तेषां बाष्पं नेत्रेष्वजायत।

तथा ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे कुमाराणां यशस्विनाम्।।2.102.16।।
 

काकुत्स्थे when Rama, तथा thus, ब्रुवति while saying, ततः thereafter, यशस्विनाम् of the illustrious, तेषाम् those, कुमाराणाम् of the sons of Dasaratha, नेत्रेषु in their eyes, बहुगुणम्
copious, बाष्पः tears, अजायत welled up.

While the scion of the Kakutsthas was saying thus, copious tears welled up from the eyes of all those illustrious sons of Dasaratha.
ततस्ते भ्रातर  स्रव्रॆ भृशमाश्वास्य दु:खितम्।

अब्रुवन् जगतीभर्तुः क्रियतामुदकं पितुः।।2.102.17।।
 

ततः then, सर्वे all, ते भ्रातरः his brothers, राघवम् Rama, भृशम् greatly, आश्वास्य having consoled, जगतीभर्तुः to the protector of the world, Dasaratha, पितुः to father, उदकम् libations of water, क्रियताम् may be offered, अब्रुवन् they told.

All the brothers, having consoled Rama as best they could, told him, Let the libations be offered to our father, the protector of the world.
सा सीता स्वर्गतं श्रुत्वा श्वशुरं  तं महानृपम्।

नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्या शशाकेक्षितुं प्रियम्।।2.102.18।।
 

सा सीता that Sita, श्वशुरम् fatherinlaw, नृपम् king Dasaratha, स्वर्गलोकगतम् as having attained heaven, श्रुत्वा having heard, अश्रुपूर्णाभ्याम् filled with tears, नेत्राभ्याम् with eyes, पतिम् husband, ईक्षितुम् to see, नाशकत् was not able.

On hearing that her fatherinlaw, king Dasaratha, had attained heaven, Sita, her eyes filled with tears could not look at her husband in the face.
सान्त्वयित्वा तु तां रामो रुदन्तीं जनकात्मजाम्।

उवाच लक्ष्मणं तत्र दुःखितो दुःखितं वचः।।2.102.19।।


रामः Rama, रुदन्तीम् weeping, तां जनकात्मजाम् that Sita, सान्त्वयित्वा having consoled, दुःखितः overcome with grief, दुःखितम् distressed, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, तत्र then, वचः words, उवाच said.

Having consoled Sita, daughter of Janaka, griefstricken Rama said to Lakshmana who was also distressed with grief.
आनयेङ्गुदिपिण्याकं चीरमाहर चोत्तरम्।

जलक्रियार्थं तातस्य गमिष्यामि महात्मनः।।2.102.20।।


इङ्गुदिपिण्याकम् oil cake of Ingudi fruit, आनय bring, उत्तरम् upper, चीरं च bark garment, आहर fetch, महात्मनः of the magnanimous, तातस्य father's, जलक्रियार्थम् to offer libations of water, गमिष्यामि I shall go.

I shall go and offer libations to my magnanimous father. Go and fetch the dried pulp of ingudi fruit and an upper garment made of bark.
सीता पुरस्ताद्व्रजतु त्वमेनामभितो व्रज।

अहं पश्चाद्गमिष्यामि गतिर्ह्येषा सुदारुणा।।2.102.21।।


सीता Sita, पुरस्तात् in front, व्रजतु let her proceed, एनाम् अभितः ahead of her, त्वम् you, व्रज go, अहम् I, पश्चात् behind, गमिष्यामि shall go, एषा this, गतिः procession in mourning, सुदारुणा हि is terrible indeed.

Let us proceed in this order -- you first, Sita second and I last. This procession in mourning is terrible indeed.
ततो नित्यानुगस्तेषां विदितात्मा महामतिः।

मृदुर्दान्तश्च कान्तश्च रामे च दृढभक्तिमान्।।2.102.22।।

सुमन्त्र स्तैर्नृपसुतैस्सार्धमाश्वस्य राघवम्।

अवातारयदालम्ब्य नदीं मन्दाकिनीं शिवाम्।।2.102.23।।
 

ततः thereafter, तेषाम् them, नित्यानुगः constant follower, विदितात्मा knowledgeable in spiritual sciences, महामतिः endowed with great intelligence, मृदुः softnatured, दान्तश्च
selfcontrolled, शान्तश्च tranquilminded, रामे च in Rama, दृढभक्तिमान् staunchly devoted, सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, तैः नृपसुतैः सार्धम् along with those princes, राघवम् Rama, आश्वास्य having consoled him, आलम्ब्य taking hold of his hand, शिवाम् auspicious, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् (into) the river Mandakini, अवातारयत् helped their descent.

Thereafter, their constant follower Sumantra who was conversant in spiritual knowledge, a highminded person, softnatured, selfcontrolled, tranquilminded and staunchly devoted to Rama consoled him. Holding the hands of the princes, Sumantra helped their descent into the auspicious river Mandakini for taking bath.
ततो नित्यानुगस्तेषां विदितात्मा महामतिः।

मृदुर्दान्तश्च शान्तश्च रामे च दृढभक्तिमान्।।2.102.22।।

सुमन्त्रस्तैर्नृपसुतैः सार्धमाश्वास्य राघवम्।

अवातारयदालम्ब्य नदीं मन्दाकिनीं शिवाम्।।2.102.23।।


ततः thereafter, तेषाम् them, नित्यानुगः constant follower, विदितात्मा knowledgeable in spiritual sciences, महामतिः endowed with great intelligence, मृदुः softnatured, दान्तश्च
selfcontrolled, शान्तश्च tranquilminded, रामे च in Rama, दृढभक्तिमान् staunchly devoted, सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, तैः नृपसुतैः सार्धम् along with those princes, राघवम् Rama, आश्वास्य having consoled him, आलम्ब्य taking hold of his hand, शिवाम् auspicious, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् (into) the river Mandakini, अवातारयत् helped their descent.

Thereafter, their constant follower Sumantra who was conversant in spiritual knowledge, a highminded person, softnatured, selfcontrolled, tranquilminded and staunchly devoted to Rama consoled him. Holding the hands of the princes, Sumantra helped their descent into the auspicious river Mandakini for taking bath.
ते सुतीर्थां ततः कृच्छ्रादुपागम्य यशस्विनः।

नदीं मन्दाकिनीं रम्यां सदा पुष्पितकाननाम्।।2.102.24।।

शीघ्रस्रोतसमासाद्य तीर्थं शिवमकर्दमम्।

सिषिचु स्तूदकं राज्ञे तत एतद् भवत्विति।।2.102.25।।
 

ततः then, यशस्विनः illustrious, ते they, सुतीर्थां of convenient descent, रम्याम् enchanting, सदापुष्पितकाननाम् with forests always in blossom, शीघ्रस्रोतसम् swiftly flowing, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् river Mandakini, कृच्छ्रात् with great difficulty, उपागम्य having approached, अकर्दमम् at a place that is not slushy, शिवम् auspicious, तीर्थम् descent, आसाद्य having reached, तात O father, एतत् these, ते to you, भवतु let this be, इति thus, राज्ञे for the king, उदकम् waters, सिषिचुः sprinkled. (offered libation).

The illustrious brothers approached with great difficulty the swiftflowing and enchanting river Mandakini which had convenient descent and endowed with forests always in bloom. They descended at an auspicious place that was not slushy and offered libations of water saying 'O father, let these offerings be yours'.

ततः then, यशस्विनः illustrious, ते they, सुतीर्थां of convenient descent, रम्याम् enchanting, सदापुष्पितकाननाम् with forests always in blossom, शीघ्रस्रोतसम् swiftly flowing, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् river Mandakini, कृच्छ्रात् with great difficulty, उपागम्य having approached, अकर्दमम् at a place that is not slushy, शिवम् auspicious, तीर्थम् descent, आसाद्य having reached, तात O father, एतत् these, ते to you, भवतु let this be, इति thus, राज्ञे for the king, उदकम् waters, सिषिचुः sprinkled. (offered libation).

प्रगृह्य च महीपालो जलपूरितमञ्जलिम्।

दिशं याम्यामभिमुखो रुदन्वचनमब्रवीत्।।2.102.26।।


महीपालः ruler of the earth, जलपूरितम् filled with water, अञ्जलिम् both palms cupped, प्रगृह्य holding, याम्यां दिशम् relating to direction of Yama, the southern direction, अभिमुखः
facing, रुदन् with sobs, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् said.

Rama, the ruler of the earth, held water with both palms cupped and, facing the south, the direction of Yama (the god of death) said these words, sobbing:
एतत्ते राजशार्दूल विमलं तोयमक्षयम्।

पितृलोकगत स्याद्य मद्दत्तमुपतिष्ठतु।।2.102.27।।


राजशार्दूल O best of kings, पितृलोकगतस्य one who has attained the world of the ancestors, ते to you, अद्य now, मद्दत्तम् offered by me, एतत् this, विमलम् pure, तोयम् water, अक्षयम् inexhaustible, उपतिष्ठतु let it reach you.

'O best of kings, you are gone to the world of the manes, and let this inexhaustible libation of pure water reach you'.
ततो मन्दाकिनीतीरात्प्रत्युत्तीर्य स राघवः।

पितुश्चकार तेजस्वी निर्वापं भ्रातृभि सह।।2.102.28।।
 

ततः then, तेजस्वी powerful, राघवः scion of the Raghu race (Rama), मन्दाकिनीतीरात् from the bank the river Mandakini, प्रत्युत्तीर्य climbing up, भ्रातृभि: सह with his brothers, पितुः for the departed father, निवापम् offerings of pinda ( balls of rice or flour), चकार made.

Then, the powerful scion of the Raghu race reached bank, from the bathing spot of the river Mandakini along with his brothers and offered pinda (an offering of rice flour to the departed) to his late lamented father.
ऐङ्गुदं बदरीमिश्रं पिण्याकं दर्भसंस्तरे।

न्यस्य रामस्सदुःखार्तो रुदन्वचनमब्रवीत्।।2.102.29।।


सः रामः that Rama, बदरीमिश्रम् mixed with badari fruits, ऐङ्गुदम् pertaining to the ingudi tree, पिण्याकम् pulp made into balls, दर्भसंस्तरे on a spread of darbha grass, न्यस्य after placing, दुःखार्तः overcome with distress, रुदन् weeping, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Placing the balls of ingudi pulp mixed with badari fruit on a spread of darbha grass, Rama, was overcome with grief and weeping, said:
इदं भुङ्क्ष्वमहाराज प्रीतो यदशना वयम्।

यदन्नः पुरुषो भवति तदन्ना स्तस्य देवताः।।2.102.30।।


महाराज O great king, वयम् we, यदशनाः whatever is food, इदम् such food, प्रीतः wellpleased, भुङ्क्ष्व partake, पुरुषः man, यदन्नः whichever food, भवति takes, तस्य देवताः his gods, तदन्नाः have the same food.

O great king, we offer you such food as we partake now. Be pleased to accept it. For, his gods are offered the food a man takes.
तत स्तेनैव मार्गेण प्रत्युत्तीर्य सरित्तटात्।

आरुरोह नरव्याघ्रो रम्यसानुं महीधरम्।।2.102.31।।
 

ततः thereafter, नरव्याघ्रः best among men (Rama), तेन that, मार्गेणैव by the same path itself, नदीतटात् from the river bank, प्रत्युत्तीर्य having ascended, रम्यसानुम् having charming slopes, महीधरम् mountain, आरुरोह climbed.

Rama, the tiger among men, ascending the riverbank and proceeding on the same path (he had come), climbed the (Chitrakuta) mountain of charming slopes.
ततः पर्णकुटीद्वारमासाद्य जगतीपतिः।

परिजग्राह बाहुभ्यामुभौ भरतलक्ष्मणौ।।2.102.32।।


ततः then, जगतीपतिः lord of the earth (Rama), पर्णकुटीद्वारम् the door of leafhut, आसाद्य having reached, बाहुभ्याम् with his arms, भरतलक्ष्मणौ Bharata and Lakshmana, उभौ both, परिजग्राह took hold of.

Rama, lord of the earth, reached the door of the leafhut and took Bharata and
Lakshmana in his arms.
तेषां तु रुदतां शब्दात् प्रतिशब्दोऽभवद् गिरौ।

भ्रातॄणां सह वैदेह्या सिंहानां नर्दतामिव।।2.102.33।।


वैदेह्या सह with Sita, रुदताम् of those lamenting people, तेषां भ्रात्रूणाम् all the brothers', शब्दात् with the sound, नर्दताम् roaring, सिंहानामिव like the lions, शब्दात् with sound, गिरौ in the mountain, प्रतिशब्दः अभवत् was echoed.

The mountain echoed with the sound of lamentations of all the brothers along with Sita which resembled the roar of lions.
महाबलानां रुदतां कुर्वतामुदकं पितुः।

विज्ञाय तुमुलं शब्दं त्रस्ता भरत सैनिकाः।।2.102.34।


महाबलानाम् of mighty ones, पितुः to father, उदकम् libations of water, कुर्वताम् of those offering, रुदताम् lamenting brothers', तुमुलम् tumultous, शब्दम् sound, विज्ञाय having come to know, भरतसैनिकाः soldiers of Bharata, त्रस्ताः were alarmed.

The soldiers of Bharata were alarmed on hearing the tumultuous sounds raised by those mighty brothers offering libations of water and lamenting.
अब्रुवंश्चापि रामेण भरत संगतो ध्रुवम्।

तेषामेव महान् श‌ब्द: शोचतां पितरं मृतम्।।2.102.35।।
 

भरतः Bharata, रामेण with Rama, सङ्गतः joined, घृवम् this is certain, मृतम् deceased, पितरम् about father, शोचताम् lamenting, तेषामेव their only, महान् loud, शब्दः noise, अब्रुवन् च अपि they said.

They said, 'Bharata must have joined Rama. That loud noise must be their wailing over their deceased father'.
अथ वासान्परित्यज्य तं सर्वेऽभिमुखास्स्वनम्।

अप्येकमनसो जग्मुर्यथास्थानं प्रधाविताः।।2.102.36।।


सर्वे all of them, अथ thereafter, वासान् their camps, परित्यज्य leaving, तं स्वनम् that sound, अभिमुखाः towards, एकमनसः अपि with only one thought in their minds, यथास्थानम् from their respective places, प्रधाविताः ran, जग्मुः went.

Then all of them left their camps with one single thought (of seeing Rama) in their minds and ran in the direction from where that sound emanated.
हयैरन्ये गजैरन्ये रथैरन्ये स्वलङ्कृतैः।

सुकुमारा स्तथैवान्ये पद्भिरेव नरा ययुः।।2.102.37।।


अन्ये some, हयैः on horses, अन्ये गजैः some on elephants, सुकुमाराः delicate men, अन्ये others, स्वलङ्कृतैः welldecorated, रथैः on chariots, तथैव similarly, अन्ये other, नराः men, पद्भिरेव on foot, ययुः went.

Some rode horses, some, elephants, while others mounted welldecorated chariots, while the young went on foot.
अचिरप्रोषितं रामं चिरविप्रोषितं यथा।

द्रष्टुकामो जनः सर्वो जगाम सहसाऽऽश्रमम्।।2.102.38।।


सर्वः all, जनः people, अचिरप्रोषितम् exiled recently, रामम् Rama, चिरविप्रोषितं यथा as if he had left long ago, द्रष्टुकामः with a desire to see him, सहसा quickly, आश्रमम् towards the hermitage, जगाम went.

The whole multitude of people at once rushed towards the hermitage wishing to see Rama as if he had left long ago though he had gone on exile very recently.
भ्रातृ़णां त्वरितास्ते तु द्रष्टुकामा स‌मागमम्।

ययुर्बहुविधैर्यानै: खुरनेमिस्वनाकुलैः।।2.102.39।।
 

तत्र there, भ्रातृ़णाम् of brothers, समागमम् union of, द्रष्टुकामाः people wishing to see, त्वरिताः
hastily, खुरनेमिस्वनाकुलैः filled with the sounds of the hooves and wheels, बहुविधैः by every sort of, यानै: on vehicle, ययुः went.

Eager to see the union of brothers, all those people went by every sort of vehicle filled with the sounds of hooves and wheels.
सा भूमिर्बहुभिर्यानैः रथ‌नेमिसमाहता।

मुमोच तुमुलं शब्दं द्यौरिवाभ्रसमागमे।।2.102.40।।
 

बहुभि: by several, यानैः by vehicles, खुरनेमि समाहता crushed with hooves and wheels, सा भूमिः the earth, अभ्रसमागमे at the gathering of stormclouds, द्यौरिव like the sky, तुमुलम् tumultous, शब्दम् sound, मुमोच emitted.

The earth crushed by several vehicles, hooves (of horses) and wheels (of chariots) emitted tumultuous sounds like the sky in the gathering stormclouds.
तेन वित्रासिता नागाः करेणुपरिवारिताः।

आवासयन्तो गन्धेन जग्मुरन्यद्वनं ततः।।2.102.41।।


तेन by that (sound), वित्रासिताः frightened, करेणुपरिवारिताः followed by the female elephants, नागाः elephants, गन्धेन with the odour of ichor, आवासयन्तः odorising, ततः from there, अन्यत् वनम् to another forest, जग्मुः went.

Frightened by the sound, the elephants followed by their females, spreading all the way the odour of the ichor, moved to other forests.
वराह वृकसङ्घाश्च महिषा: सृमरास्तथा ।

व्याघ्रगोकर्णगवया वित्रेसुः पृषतै स‌ह।।2.102.42।।
 

वराहवृकसङ्घाश्च with host of boars and wolves, महिषाः buffaloes, सर्पवानराः serpents and apes, व्याघ्रगोकर्णगवयाः tigers, antelopes with ears like cows', gavayas, पृषतैः सह along with spotted deer, वित्रेसुः were frightened.

Hearing that sound, hosts of boars and deer, buffaloes, serpents and apes, tigers, antelopes with ears like the cows', gavayas as well as dappled antelopes were all frightened.
रथाङ्गसाह्वा नत्यूहा हंसाः कारण्डवाः परे।

तथा पुंस्कोकिलाः क्रौञ्चा विसंज्ञा भेजिरे दिशः।।2.102.43।।
 

रथाङ्गसाह्वाः ducks, नत्यूहा watercranes, हंसाः geese, कारण्डवाः karandavas, प्लवाः cranes, तथा similarly, पुंस्कोकिलाः male cuckoos, क्रौञ्चाः kraunchas, विसंज्ञाः senselessly, दिशः diffrent directions, भेजिरे fled.

Ducks, watercranes, geese, karandavas, cranes, male cuckoos and kraunchas fled senselessly in different directions.
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तैराकाशं पक्षिभिर्वृतम्।

मनुष्यैरावृता भूमिरुभयं प्रबभौ तदा।।2.102.44।।


तेन शब्देन by that sound, वित्रस्तैः frightened, पक्षिभिः by birds also, वृतम् filled with, आकाशम् the sky, मनुष्यैः by people, आवृता covered, भूमिः the earth, उभयम् both, तदा प्रबभौ greatly shone.

The sky was filled with birds frightened by the sound and the earth covered with people. Both looked extremely beautiful.
ततस्तं पुरषव्याघ्रं यशस्विनमकल्पषम्।

आसीनं स्थण्डिले रामं ददर्श सहसा जनः।।2.102.45।।
 

ततः thereafter, जनः people, पुरुषव्याघ्रं best of men, यशस्विनम् illustrious, अरिन्दमम् one who is destroyer of enemies, स्थण्डिले on the bare earth, आसीनम् squatted, तम् that, रामम् Rama, सहसा at once, ददर्श beheld.

All at once the people saw the illustrious Rama, the best of men, and the subduer of enemies squatting on the bare earth.
विगर्हमाणः कैकेयीं मन्थरासहितामपि।

अभिगम्य जनो रामं बाष्पपूर्णमुखोऽभवत्।।2.102.46।।


जनः all men, मन्थरासहिताम् including Manthara, कैकेयीम् Kaikeyi, विगर्हमाणः censuring, रामम् to Rama, अभिगम्य having reached, बाष्पपूर्णमुखः with face filled with tears, अभवत् became.

All those men with faces full of tears, reproaching Kaikeyi and Manthara (all the way), approached Rama.
तान्नरान्बाष्पपूर्णाक्षान्समीक्ष्याथ सुदुःखितान्।

पर्यष्वजत धर्मज्ञः पितृवन्मातृवच्च सः।।2.102.47।।


धर्मज्ञः knower of righteousness, सः that Rama, अथ thereafter, बाष्पपूर्णाक्षान् eyes filled with tears, सुदुःखितान् deeply afflicted, तान्नरान् those people, समीक्ष्य having seen, पितृवत् like a father, मातृवच्च like a mother, पर्यष्वजत embraced.

Thereafter, beholding those people deeply afflicted, their eyes full of tears, Rama embraced them as if they were his own father and mother.
स तत्र कांश्चित्परिषस्वजे नरान्नरास्तु केचित्तु तमभ्यवादयन्।

चकार सर्वान्सवयस्यबान्धवान्यथार्ह मासाद्य तदा नृपात्मजः।।2.102.48।।


सः Rama, तत्र there, कांश्चित् some, नरान् men, परिषस्वजे embraced, केचित्तु as for some, नराश्च men, तम् that Rama, अभ्यवादयन् paid obeisance, तदा then, सः that, नृपात्मजः king's son, सर्वान् all of them, आसाद्य having reached, वयस्यबान्धवान् friends and relations, यथार्हम्
as deserved, चकार made.

Rama embraced some, while others paid him obeisance. Therafter, he honoured his erstwhile companions and relations in accordance with their status.
स तत्र तेषां रुदतां महात्मनां भुवं च खं चानुनिनादयन्स्वनः।

गुहा गिरीणां च दिशश्च सन्ततं मृदङ्गघोषप्रतिमः प्रशुश्रुवे।।2.102.49।।


तत्र there, रुदताम् weeping, तेषां महात्मनाम् those magnanimous persons, स्वनः that tumult, भुवं च the earth, खं च the sky, गिरीणाम् of mountains, गुहाश्च caves, दिशश्च the directions, अनुनिनादयन् reverberating, मृदङ्गघोषप्रतिमः like beating of drums, सन्ततम् incessantly, प्रशुश्रुवे was heard.

The weeping and the tumult of those magnanimous people made the earth, sky, mountaincaves and all quarters reverberate incessantly like the beating of drums.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे द्व्युत्तरशततमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the hundred and second sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
