[Rama, Sita and Lakshmana's grief over king Dasaratha's death --- Rama and Lakshmana offer libations of water in Mandakini river]

tāṅ śrutvā karuṇāṅ vācaṅ piturmaraṇasaṅhitām.

rāghavō bharatē nōktāṅ babhūva gatacētanaḥ৷৷2.102.1৷৷


rāghavaḥ one born in the race of the Raghus (Rama), bharatēna by Bharata, uktām uttered, pituḥ father's, maraṇasaṅhitām union with death, karuṇām pitiable, tāṅ those, vācam words, śrutvā on hearing, gata cētanaḥ unconscious, babhūva became.

Having heard the words of Bharata regarding the death of his father, Rama became unconscious.
taṅ tu vajramivōtsṛṣṭamāhavē dānavāriṇā

vāgvajraṅbharatē nōkta mamanōjñaṅ parantapaḥ৷৷2.102.2৷৷

pragṛhya rāmō bāhū vaipuṣpitāgrō yathā drumaḥ.

vanē paraśunā kṛttastathā bhuvi papāta ha৷৷2.102.3৷৷


parantapaḥ destroyer of enemies, rāmaḥ Rama, āhavē in the battle, dānavāriṇā by the enemy of demons (Indra), utsṛṣṭam hurled, vajramiva like thunderbolt, amanōjñam unpleasant, bharatēna by Bharata, uktam spoken, tam that, vāgvajram thunder-like words, bāhū both arms, pragṛhya stretching forth, vanē in the forest, paraśunā by an axe, kṛttaḥ severed, puṣpitāgraḥ with flowering tops, drumaḥ tree, yathā as, tathā like that, bhuvi on the ground, papāta ha fell down.

On hearing the thunder-like words spoken by Bharata afflicting the mind, like the
thunderbolt hurled by Indra (enemy of demons) in a battle, Rama, the scorcher of enemies, stretching forth both his arms, fell down on the ground like a tree with flowering tops severed by an axe in the forest.
tathā nipatitaṅ rāmaṅ jagatyāṅ jagatīpatim.

kūlaghātapariśrāntaṅ prasuptamiva kuñjaram৷৷2.102. 4৷৷

bhrātarastē mahēṣvāsaṅ sarvataśśōkakarśitam.

rudantassaha vaidēhyā siṣicussalilēna vai৷৷2.102.5৷৷


tathā that way, jagatyām on the earth, nipatitam fallen, jagatīpatim lord of the world, kūlaghātapariśrāntam exhausted from striking a river bank, prasuptam asleep, kuñjaram iva like an elephant, mahēṣvāsam a great archer, śōkakarśitam afflicted with grief, rāmam Rama, sarvataḥ on all sides, vaidēhyā saha along with Sita, tē those, bhrātaraḥ brothers, rudantaḥ lamenting, salilēna with waters, siṣicuḥ vai sprinkled.

Those brothers on all sides, with Sita lamenting, sprinkled water on Rama, the great archer and lord of the earth who, afflicted with grief, had fallen down on the ground, and was lying like an elephant exhausted from repeatedly striking a river bank.
sa tu saṅjñāṅ punarlabdhvā nētrābhyāmasramutsṛjan.

upākrāmata kākutstha kṛpaṇaṅ bahu bhāṣitum৷৷2.102.6৷৷


saḥ kākutstha that Rama, punaḥ again, saṅjñām consciousness, labdhvā regaining, nētrābhyām from eyes, asram tears, utsṛjan shedding, kṛpaṇam piteously, bahu excessively, bhāṣitum to speak, upākrāmata started.

On regaining consciousness, shedding tears profusely, Rama again started speaking piteously.
sa rāmassvargataṅ śrutvā pitaraṅ pṛthivīpatim.

uvāca bharataṅ vākyaṅ dharmātmā dharmasaṅhitam৷৷2.102.7৷৷


dharmātmā righteous, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, pṛthivīpatim lord of the world, pitaram father, svargatam had attained heaven, śrutvā on hearing, bharatam to Bharata, dharmasaṅhitam that which was in
conformity with his rightful conduct, vākyam words, uvāca said.

On hearing that his father, king Dasaratha, the lord of the world had attained heaven, righteous Rama said to Bharata in conformty with his rightful conduct.
kiṅ kariṣyāmyayōdhyāyāṅ tātē diṣṭāṅ gatiṅ gatē.

kastāṅ rājavarādhdīnāmayōdhyāṅ pālayiṣyati৷৷2.102.8৷৷


tātē father, diṣṭāṅ gatim the path ordained by the gods, ayōdhyāyām in Ayodhya, kiṅ kariṣyāmi what shall I do, rājavarāt by the best of kings, hīnām deprived, tām ayōdhyām that Ayodhya, kaḥ who, pālayiṣyati will rule.

What shall I do in Ayodhya now that my father has followed the path ordained by the gods? Who will rule that Ayodhya deprived of that best of kings?
kiṅ nu tasya mayā kāryaṅ durjātēna mahātmanaḥ.

yō mṛtō mama śōkēna mayā cāpi na saṅskṛtaḥ৷৷2.102.9৷৷


yaḥ that king Dasaratha, mama śōkēna of grief on account of me, mṛtaḥ died, mayā by me, na saṅskṛtaścāpi the last rites could not be performed, tasya for him, mahātmanaḥ for that magnanimous one, dūrjātēna of unlucky birth, mayā by me, kiṅ nu kāryam of what use?

I could not even perform the last rites of that magnanimous one who died of grief on account of me. What use is my life with an unlucky birth?
ahō bharata! siddhārthō yēna rājā tvayā.nagha.

śatrughnēna ca sarvēṣu prētakṛtyēṣu satkṛtaḥ৷৷2.102.10৷৷


anagha O irreproachable one, bharata! Bharata, yēna tvayā by you, śatrughnēna by Satrughna, rājā king, sarvēṣu in all, prētakṛtyēṣu in last rites, satkṛtaḥ well-honoured, siddhārthaḥ you have fulfilled your duty, ahō fortunate indeed.

O irreproachable Bharata, it is gratifying that you and Satrughna are indeed fortunate to have fulfilled your cherished desire since the king was well-honoured by you with all the obsequial rites.
niṣpradhānāmanēkāgrāṅ narēndrēṇa vinākṛtām.

nivṛttavanavāsō.pi nāyōdhyāṅ gantu mutsahē৷৷2.102.11৷৷


nivṛttavanavāsō.pi even after completion of the exile, niṣpradhānām bereft of chief, anēkāgram directionless, narēndrēṇa by the king, vinākṛtām deprived, ayōdhyām Ayodhya, gantum to return, na utsahē I do not desire.

Even after the completion of my exile I do not wish to return to Ayodhya which is directionless, bereft of its chief, the king.
samāptavanavāsaṅ māmayōdhyāyāṅ parantapa.

kō.nu śāsiṣyati punastātē lōkāntaraṅ gatē৷৷2.102.12৷৷


parantapa O subduer of enemies, Bharata, tātē with father, lōkāntaram to the other world, gatē having gone to, samāptavanavāsam on completion the exile, mām me, punaḥ again, ayōdhyām in Ayodhya, kaḥ who, anuśāsiṣyati guide.

O subduer of enemies, when father has gone to the other world, who will guide me in Ayodhya after I complete my term of exile?
purā prēkṣya suvṛttaṅ māṅ pitā yānyāha sāntvayan.

vākyāni tāni śrōṣyāmi kutaśśrōtrasukhānyaham৷৷2.102.13৷৷


purā in the past, pitā father, mām me, suvṛttam good conduct, prēkṣya on seeing, sāntvayan
comforting, yāni vākyāni such words, āha used to say, śrōtra sukhā pleasant to the ears, tāni those words, kutaḥ from whom, śrōṣyāmi I can hear.

On seeing my good conduct our father used to say comforting words to me. Now
from whom can I hear such words pleasing to the ears?
ēvamuktvā sa bharataṅ bhāryāmabhyētya rāghavaḥ.

uvāca śōkasantaptaḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanām৷৷2.102.14৷৷


saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, bharatam to Bharata, ēvam in this way, uktvā having said, pūrṇacandranibhānanām her face looking like the full Moon, bhāryām wife, abhyētya having approached, śōkasantaptaḥ overhelmed with grief, uvāca said.

Having thus spoken to Bharata, Rama, overwhelmed with grief, approached his wife Sita whose face looked like the full Moon, and said to her.
sītē mṛtastē śvaśuraḥ pitrā hīnō.si lakṣmaṇa.

bharatō duḥkhamācaṣṭē svargataṅ pṛthivīpatim৷৷2.102.15৷৷


sītē O Sita, tē śvaśuraḥ your father-in-law, mṛtaḥ is dead, lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, pitrā father, hīnaḥ asi are deprived of, bharataḥ Bharata, pṛthivīpatim lord of the world, king Dasaratha, svargatam as having gone to heaven, duḥkham sad news, ācaṣṭē is relating.

O Sita, your father-in-law is dead. O Lakshmana, you are deprived of your father. Bharata is relating to me the sad news that king Dasaratha has attained his heavenly abode.
tatō bahuguṇaṅ tēṣāṅ bāṣpō nētrēṣvajāyata.

tathā bruvati kākutsthē kumārāṇāṅ yaśasvinām৷৷2.102.16৷৷


kākutsthē when Rama, tathā thus, bruvati while saying, tataḥ thereafter, yaśasvinām of the illustrious, tēṣām those, kumārāṇām of the sons of Dasaratha, nētrēṣu in their eyes, bahuguṇam
copious, bāṣpaḥ tears, ajāyata welled up.

While the scion of the Kakutsthas was saying thus, copious tears welled up from the eyes of all those illustrious sons of Dasaratha.
tatastē bhrātara ssarvē bhṛśamāśvāsya rāghavam.

abruvan jagatībhartuḥ kriyatāmudakaṅ pituḥ৷৷2.102.17৷৷


tataḥ then, sarvē all, tē bhrātaraḥ his brothers, rāghavam Rama, bhṛśam greatly, āśvāsya having consoled, jagatībhartuḥ to the protector of the world, Dasaratha, pituḥ to father, udakam libations of water, kriyatām may be offered, abruvan they told.

All the brothers, having consoled Rama as best they could, told him, Let the libations be offered to our father, the protector of the world.
sā sītā śvaśuraṅ śrutvā svargalōkagataṅ nṛpam.

nētrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāmaśakannēkṣituṅ patim৷৷2.102.18৷৷


sā sītā that Sita, śvaśuram father-in-law, nṛpam king Dasaratha, svargalōkagatam as having attained heaven, śrutvā having heard, aśrupūrṇābhyām filled with tears, nētrābhyām with eyes, patim husband, īkṣitum to see, nāśakat was not able.

On hearing that her father-in-law, king Dasaratha, had attained heaven, Sita, her eyes filled with tears could not look at her husband in the face.
sāntvayitvā tu tāṅ rāmō rudantīṅ janakātmajām.

uvāca lakṣmaṇaṅ tatra duḥkhitō duḥkhitaṅ vacaḥ৷৷2.102.19৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, rudantīm weeping, tāṅ janakātmajām that Sita, sāntvayitvā having consoled, duḥkhitaḥ overcome with grief, duḥkhitam distressed, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, tatra then, vacaḥ words, uvāca said.

Having consoled Sita, daughter of Janaka, grief-stricken Rama said to Lakshmana who was also distressed with grief.
ānayēṅgudipiṇyākaṅ cīramāhara cōttaram.

jalakriyārthaṅ tātasya gamiṣyāmi mahātmanaḥ৷৷2.102.20৷৷


iṅgudipiṇyākam oil cake of Ingudi fruit, ānaya bring, uttaram upper, cīraṅ ca bark garment, āhara fetch, mahātmanaḥ of the magnanimous, tātasya father's, jalakriyārtham to offer libations of water, gamiṣyāmi I shall go.

I shall go and offer libations to my magnanimous father. Go and fetch the dried pulp of ingudi fruit and an upper garment made of bark.
sītā purastādvrajatu tvamēnāmabhitō vraja.

ahaṅ paścādgamiṣyāmi gatirhyēṣā sudāruṇā৷৷2.102.21৷৷


sītā Sita, purastāt in front, vrajatu let her proceed, ēnām abhitaḥ ahead of her, tvam you, vraja go, aham I, paścāt behind, gamiṣyāmi shall go, ēṣā this, gatiḥ procession in mourning, sudāruṇā hi is terrible indeed.

Let us proceed in this order -- you first, Sita second and I last. This procession in mourning is terrible indeed.
tatō nityānugastēṣāṅ viditātmā mahāmatiḥ.

mṛdurdāntaśca śāntaśca rāmē ca dṛḍhabhaktimān৷৷2.102.22৷৷

sumantra stairnṛpasutaissārdhamāśvasya rāghavam.

avātārayadālambya nadīṅ mandākinīṅ śivām৷৷2.102.23৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, tēṣām them, nityānugaḥ constant follower, viditātmā knowledgeable in spiritual sciences, mahāmatiḥ endowed with great intelligence, mṛduḥ soft-natured, dāntaśca
self-controlled, śāntaśca tranquil-minded, rāmē ca in Rama, dṛḍhabhaktimān staunchly devoted, sumantraḥ Sumantra, taiḥ nṛpasutaiḥ sārdham along with those princes, rāghavam Rama, āśvāsya having consoled him, ālambya taking hold of his hand, śivām auspicious, mandākinīṅ nadīm (into) the river Mandakini, avātārayat helped their descent.

Thereafter, their constant follower Sumantra who was conversant in spiritual knowledge, a high-minded person, soft-natured, self-controlled, tranquil-minded and staunchly devoted to Rama consoled him. Holding the hands of the princes, Sumantra helped their descent into the auspicious river Mandakini for taking bath.
tē sutīrthāṅ tataḥ kṛcchrādupāgamya yaśasvinaḥ.

nadīṅ mandākinīṅ ramyāṅ sadā puṣpitakānanām৷৷2.102.24৷৷

śīghrasrōtasamāsādya tīrthaṅ śivamakardamam.

siṣicu stūdakaṅ rājñē tātaitattē bhavatviti৷৷2.102.25৷৷


tataḥ then, yaśasvinaḥ illustrious, tē they, sutīrthāṅ of convenient descent, ramyām enchanting, sadāpuṣpitakānanām with forests always in blossom, śīghrasrōtasam swiftly flowing, mandākinīṅ nadīm river Mandakini, kṛcchrāt with great difficulty, upāgamya having approached, akardamam at a place that is not slushy, śivam auspicious, tīrtham descent, āsādya having reached, tāta O father, ētat these, tē to you, bhavatu let this be, iti thus, rājñē for the king, udakam waters, siṣicuḥ sprinkled. (offered libation).

The illustrious brothers approached with great difficulty the swift-flowing and enchanting river Mandakini which had convenient descent and endowed with forests always in bloom. They descended at an auspicious place that was not slushy and offered libations of water saying 'O father, let these offerings be yours'.
pragṛhya ca mahīpālō jalapūritamañjalim.

diśaṅ yāmyāmabhimukhō rudanvacanamabravīt৷৷2.102.26৷৷


mahīpālaḥ ruler of the earth, jalapūritam filled with water, añjalim both palms cupped, pragṛhya holding, yāmyāṅ diśam relating to direction of Yama, the southern direction, abhimukhaḥ
facing, rudan with sobs, vacanam words, abravīt said.

Rama, the ruler of the earth, held water with both palms cupped and, facing the south, the direction of Yama (the god of death) said these words, sobbing:
ētattē rājaśārdūla vimalaṅ tōyamakṣayam.

pitṛlōkagata syādya maddattamupatiṣṭhatu৷৷2.102.27৷৷


rājaśārdūla O best of kings, pitṛlōkagatasya one who has attained the world of the ancestors, tē to you, adya now, maddattam offered by me, ētat this, vimalam pure, tōyam water, akṣayam inexhaustible, upatiṣṭhatu let it reach you.

'O best of kings, you are gone to the world of the manes, and let this inexhaustible libation of pure water reach you'.
tatō mandākinītīrātpratyuttīrya sa rāghavaḥ.

pituścakāra tējasvī nivāpaṅ bhrātṛbhissaha৷৷2.102.28৷৷


tataḥ then, tējasvī powerful, rāghavaḥ scion of the Raghu race (Rama), mandākinītīrāt from the bank the river Mandakini, pratyuttīrya climbing up, bhrātṛbhi: saha with his brothers, pituḥ for the departed father, nivāpam offerings of pinda ( balls of rice or flour), cakāra made.

Then, the powerful scion of the Raghu race reached bank, from the bathing spot of the river Mandakini along with his brothers and offered pinda (an offering of rice flour to the departed) to his late lamented father.
aiṅgudaṅ badarīmiśraṅ piṇyākaṅ darbhasaṅstarē.

nyasya rāmassaduḥkhārtō rudanvacanamabravīt৷৷2.102.29৷৷


saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, badarīmiśram mixed with badari fruits, aiṅgudam pertaining to the ingudi tree, piṇyākam pulp made into balls, darbhasaṅstarē on a spread of darbha grass, nyasya after placing, duḥkhārtaḥ overcome with distress, rudan weeping, vacanam these words, abravīt said.

Placing the balls of ingudi pulp mixed with badari fruit on a spread of darbha grass, Rama, was overcome with grief and weeping, said:
idaṅ bhuṅkṣvamahārāja! prītō yadaśanā vayam.

yadannaḥ puruṣō bhavati tadannā stasya dēvatāḥ৷৷2.102.30৷৷


mahārāja O great king, vayam we, yadaśanāḥ whatever is food, idam such food, prītaḥ well-pleased, bhuṅkṣva partake, puruṣaḥ man, yadannaḥ whichever food, bhavati takes, tasya dēvatāḥ his gods, tadannāḥ have the same food.

O great king, we offer you such food as we partake now. Be pleased to accept it. For, his gods are offered the food a man takes.
tata stēnaiva mārgēṇa pratyuttīrya nadītaṭāt.

ārurōha naravyāghrō ramyasānuṅ mahīdharam৷৷2.102.31৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, naravyāghraḥ best among men (Rama), tēna that, mārgēṇaiva by the same path itself, nadītaṭāt from the river bank, pratyuttīrya having ascended, ramyasānum having charming slopes, mahīdharam mountain, ārurōha climbed.

Rama, the tiger among men, ascending the riverbank and proceeding on the same path (he had come), climbed the (Chitrakuta) mountain of charming slopes.
tataḥ parṇakuṭīdvāramāsādya jagatīpatiḥ.

parijagrāha bāhubhyāmubhau bharatalakṣmaṇau৷৷2.102.32৷৷


tataḥ then, jagatīpatiḥ lord of the earth (Rama), parṇakuṭīdvāram the door of leaf-hut, āsādya having reached, bāhubhyām with his arms, bharatalakṣmaṇau Bharata and Lakshmana, ubhau both, parijagrāha took hold of.

Rama, lord of the earth, reached the door of the leaf-hut and took Bharata and
Lakshmana in his arms.
tēṣāṅ tu rudatāṅ śabdātpratiśrutkō.bhavadgirau.

bhrātrūṇāṅ saha vaidēhyā siṅhānāmiva nardatām৷৷2.102.33৷৷


vaidēhyā saha with Sita, rudatām of those lamenting people, tēṣāṅ bhrātrūṇām all the brothers', śabdāt with the sound, nardatām roaring, siṅhānāmiva like the lions, śabdāt with sound, girau in the mountain, pratiśrutkaḥ abhavat was echoed.

The mountain echoed with the sound of lamentations of all the brothers along with Sita which resembled the roar of lions.
mahābalānāṅ rudatāṅ kurvatāmudakaṅ pituḥ.

vijñāya tumulaṅ śabdaṅ trastā bharata sainikāḥ৷৷2.102.34.


mahābalānām of mighty ones, pituḥ to father, udakam libations of water, kurvatām of those offering, rudatām lamenting brothers', tumulam tumultous, śabdam sound, vijñāya having come to know, bharatasainikāḥ soldiers of Bharata, trastāḥ were alarmed.

The soldiers of Bharata were alarmed on hearing the tumultuous sounds raised by those mighty brothers offering libations of water and lamenting.
abruvaṅścāpi rāmēṇa bharata ssaṅṅgatō dhruvam.

tēṣāmēva mahāñchabdaśśōcatāṅ pitaraṅ mṛtam৷৷2.102.35৷৷


bharataḥ Bharata, rāmēṇa with Rama, saṅgataḥ joined, ghṛvam this is certain, mṛtam deceased, pitaram about father, śōcatām lamenting, tēṣāmēva their only, mahān loud, śabdaḥ noise, abruvan ca api they said.

They said, 'Bharata must have joined Rama. That loud noise must be their wailing over their deceased father'.
atha vāsānparityajya taṅ sarvē.bhimukhāssvanam.

apyēkamanasō jagmuryathāsthānaṅ pradhāvitāḥ৷৷2.102.36৷৷


sarvē all of them, atha thereafter, vāsān their camps, parityajya leaving, taṅ svanam that sound, abhimukhāḥ towards, ēkamanasaḥ api with only one thought in their minds, yathāsthānam from their respective places, pradhāvitāḥ ran, jagmuḥ went.

Then all of them left their camps with one single thought (of seeing Rama) in their minds and ran in the direction from where that sound emanated.
hayairanyē gajairanyē rathairanyē svalaṅkṛtaiḥ.

sukumārā stathaivānyē padbhirēva narā yayuḥ৷৷2.102.37৷৷


anyē some, hayaiḥ on horses, anyē gajaiḥ some on elephants, sukumārāḥ delicate men, anyē others, svalaṅkṛtaiḥ well-decorated, rathaiḥ on chariots, tathaiva similarly, anyē other, narāḥ men, padbhirēva on foot, yayuḥ went.

Some rode horses, some, elephants, while others mounted well-decorated chariots, while the young went on foot.
aciraprōṣitaṅ rāmaṅ ciraviprōṣitaṅ yathā.

draṣṭukāmō janassarvō jagāma sahasā.śramam৷৷2.102.38৷৷


sarvaḥ all, janaḥ people, aciraprōṣitam exiled recently, rāmam Rama, ciraviprōṣitaṅ yathā as if he had left long ago, draṣṭukāmaḥ with a desire to see him, sahasā quickly, āśramam towards the hermitage, jagāma went.

The whole multitude of people at once rushed towards the hermitage wishing to see Rama as if he had left long ago though he had gone on exile very recently.
bhrātṛṇāṅ tvaritā statra draṣṭukāmā ssamāgamam.

yayurbahuvidhairyānai: khuranēmisvanākulaiḥ৷৷2.102.39৷৷


tatra there, bhrātṛṇām of brothers, samāgamam union of, draṣṭukāmāḥ people wishing to see, tvaritāḥ
hastily, khuranēmisvanākulaiḥ filled with the sounds of the hooves and wheels, bahuvidhaiḥ by every sort of, yānai: on vehicle, yayuḥ went.

Eager to see the union of brothers, all those people went by every sort of vehicle filled with the sounds of hooves and wheels.
sā bhūmirbahubhiryānaiḥ khuranēmisamāhatā.

mumōca tumulaṅ śabdaṅ dyaurivābhrasamāgamē৷৷2.102.40৷৷


bahubhi: by several, yānaiḥ by vehicles, khuranēmi samāhatā crushed with hooves and wheels, sā bhūmiḥ the earth, abhrasamāgamē at the gathering of storm-clouds, dyauriva like the sky, tumulam tumultous, śabdam sound, mumōca emitted.

The earth crushed by several vehicles, hooves (of horses) and wheels (of chariots) emitted tumultuous sounds like the sky in the gathering storm-clouds.
tēna vitrāsitā nāgāḥ karēṇuparivāritāḥ.

āvāsayantō gandhēna jagmuranyadvanaṅ tataḥ৷৷2.102.41৷৷


tēna by that (sound), vitrāsitāḥ frightened, karēṇuparivāritāḥ followed by the female elephants, nāgāḥ elephants, gandhēna with the odour of ichor, āvāsayantaḥ odorising, tataḥ from there, anyat vanam to another forest, jagmuḥ went.

Frightened by the sound, the elephants followed by their females, spreading all the way the odour of the ichor, moved to other forests.
varāha vṛkasaṅghāśca mahiṣāssarpavānarāḥ.

vyāghragōkarṇagavayā vitrēsuḥ pṛṣatai ssaha৷৷2.102.42৷৷


varāhavṛkasaṅghāśca with host of boars and wolves, mahiṣāḥ buffaloes, sarpavānarāḥ serpents and apes, vyāghragōkarṇagavayāḥ tigers, antelopes with ears like cows', gavayas, pṛṣataiḥ saha along with spotted deer, vitrēsuḥ were frightened.

Hearing that sound, hosts of boars and deer, buffaloes, serpents and apes, tigers, antelopes with ears like the cows', gavayas as well as dappled antelopes were all frightened.
rathāṅgasāhvā natyūhā haṅsāḥ kāraṇḍavāḥ plavāḥ.

tathā puṅskōkilāḥ krauñcā visaṅjñā bhējirē diśaḥ৷৷2.102.43৷৷


rathāṅgasāhvāḥ ducks, natyūhā water-cranes, haṅsāḥ geese, kāraṇḍavāḥ karandavas, plavāḥ cranes, tathā similarly, puṅskōkilāḥ male cuckoos, krauñcāḥ kraunchas, visaṅjñāḥ senselessly, diśaḥ diffrent directions, bhējirē fled.

Ducks, water-cranes, geese, karandavas, cranes, male cuckoos and kraunchas fled senselessly in different directions.
tēna śabdēna vitrastairākāśaṅ pakṣibhirvṛtam.

manuṣyairāvṛtā bhūmirubhayaṅ prababhau tadā৷৷2.102.44৷৷


tēna śabdēna by that sound, vitrastaiḥ frightened, pakṣibhiḥ by birds also, vṛtam filled with, ākāśam the sky, manuṣyaiḥ by people, āvṛtā covered, bhūmiḥ the earth, ubhayam both, tadā prababhau greatly shone.

The sky was filled with birds frightened by the sound and the earth covered with people. Both looked extremely beautiful.
tatastaṅ puraṣavyāghraṅ yaśasvinamarindamam.

āsīnaṅ sthaṇḍilē rāmaṅ dadarśa sahasā janaḥ৷৷2.102.45৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, janaḥ people, puruṣavyāghraṅ best of men, yaśasvinam illustrious, arindamam one who is destroyer of enemies, sthaṇḍilē on the bare earth, āsīnam squatted, tam that, rāmam Rama, sahasā at once, dadarśa beheld.

All at once the people saw the illustrious Rama, the best of men, and the subduer of enemies squatting on the bare earth.
vigarhamāṇaḥ kaikēyīṅ mantharāsahitāmapi.

abhigamya janō rāmaṅ bāṣpapūrṇamukhō.bhavat৷৷2.102.46৷৷


janaḥ all men, mantharāsahitām including Manthara, kaikēyīm Kaikeyi, vigarhamāṇaḥ censuring, rāmam to Rama, abhigamya having reached, bāṣpapūrṇamukhaḥ with face filled with tears, abhavat became.

All those men with faces full of tears, reproaching Kaikeyi and Manthara (all the way), approached Rama.
tānnarānbāṣpapūrṇākṣānsamīkṣyātha suduḥkhitān.

paryaṣvajata dharmajñaḥ pitṛvanmātṛvacca saḥ৷৷2.102.47৷৷


dharmajñaḥ knower of righteousness, saḥ that Rama, atha thereafter, bāṣpapūrṇākṣān eyes filled with tears, suduḥkhitān deeply afflicted, tānnarān those people, samīkṣya having seen, pitṛvat like a father, mātṛvacca like a mother, paryaṣvajata embraced.

Thereafter, beholding those people deeply afflicted, their eyes full of tears, Rama embraced them as if they were his own father and mother.
sa tatra kāṅścitpariṣasvajē narānnarāstu kēcittu tamabhyavādayan.

cakāra sarvānsavayasyabāndhavānyathārha māsādya tadā nṛpātmajaḥ৷৷2.102.48৷৷


saḥ Rama, tatra there, kāṅścit some, narān men, pariṣasvajē embraced, kēcittu as for some, narāśca men, tam that Rama, abhyavādayan paid obeisance, tadā then, saḥ that, nṛpātmajaḥ king's son, sarvān all of them, āsādya having reached, vayasyabāndhavān friends and relations, yathārham
as deserved, cakāra made.

Rama embraced some, while others paid him obeisance. Therafter, he honoured his erstwhile companions and relations in accordance with their status.
sa tatra tēṣāṅ rudatāṅ mahātmanāṅ bhuvaṅ ca khaṅ cānuninādayansvanaḥ.

guhā girīṇāṅ ca diśaśca santataṅ mṛdaṅgaghōṣapratimaḥ praśuśruvē৷৷2.102.49৷৷


tatra there, rudatām weeping, tēṣāṅ mahātmanām those magnanimous persons, svanaḥ that tumult, bhuvaṅ ca the earth, khaṅ ca the sky, girīṇām of mountains, guhāśca caves, diśaśca the directions, anuninādayan reverberating, mṛdaṅgaghōṣapratimaḥ like beating of drums, santatam incessantly, praśuśruvē was heard.

The weeping and the tumult of those magnanimous people made the earth, sky, mountain-caves and all quarters reverberate incessantly like the beating of drums.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvyuttaraśatatamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the hundred and second sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
