[Kaikeyi reminds king Dasaratha about the boons--seeks consecration of Bharata as prince-regent and exile of Rama to the forest.]

taṅ manmathaśarairviddhamaṅ kāmavēgavaśānugam.

uvāca pṛthivīpālaṅ kaikēyī dāruṇaṅ vacaḥ৷৷2.11.1৷৷


kaikēyī Kaikeyi, manmathaśaraiḥ with the darts of Kamadeva, viddham struck, kāmavēgavaśānugam overtaken by passion, taṅ pṛthivīpālam to the ruler of earth (Dasaratha), dāruṇam dreadful, vacaḥ words, uvāca said.

To the ruler of the earth (the king), struck by the darts of Kamadeva and overtaken by passion Kaikeyi spoke (these) dreadful words.
nāsmi viprakṛtādēva kēnacinnāvamānitā.

abhiprāyastu mē kaścittamicchāmi tvayā kṛtam৷৷2.11.2৷৷


dēva O king, kēnacit by any one, viprakṛtā offended, nāsmi I am not, na avamānitā nor disregarded, tu but, mē my, kaścit certain, abhiprāyaḥ purpose, tam that one, tvayā by you, kṛtaṅ icchāmi you should fulfil.

O king! I have neither been offended nor disregarded by any one, but I have a purpose which you should fulfil.
pratijñāṅ pratijānīṣva yadi tvaṅ kartumicchasi.

atha tadvyāhariṣyāmi yadabhiprārthitaṅ mayā৷৷2.11.3৷৷


tvam you, kartum to accomplish, icchasi yadi if you are inclined, pratijñāṅ pratijānīṣva promise to fulfil, atha thereafter, mayā by me, yat whatever, abhiprārthitam sought for, tat that one, vyāhariṣyāmi I will tell you.

If you are inclined to accomplish my desire, then promise me that you will fulfil them. Thereafter I shall reveal it to you.
tāmuvāca mahātējāḥ kaikēyīmīṣadutsmitaḥ.

kāmī hastēna saṅgṛhya mūrdhajēṣu śucismitām৷৷2.11.4৷৷


mahātējāḥ mighty, kāmī steeped in passion, īṣat a little, utsmitaḥ with a visible smile, śucismitām with a pure (bright) smile, tāṅ kaikēyīm to that Kaikeyi, mūrdhajēṣu her hair, hastēna with hand, saṅgṛhya holding (gently), uvāca said.

The mighty king steeped in passion gently held Kaikeyi's hair in his hands and with a clear, bright smile said:
āvaliptē na jānāsi tvattaḥ priyatarō mama.

manujō manujavyāghrādrāmādanyō na vidyatē৷৷2.11.5৷৷


āvaliptē woman swollen with pride, na jānāsi do you not know?, mama to me, tvattaḥ more than you, priyataraḥ dearer, manujavyāghrāt other than the tiger (best) among men, rāmāt than Rama, anyaḥ other, manujaḥ man, na vidyatē does not exist.

O proud lady, don't you know there exists for me no woman dearer than you and no man other than Rama who is the best among men.
tēnājayyēna mukhyēna rāghavēṇa mahātmanā.

śapē tē jīvanārhēṇa brūhi yanmanasēcchāsi৷৷2.11.6৷৷


ajayyēna invincible one, mukhyēna chief (among men), jīvanārhēṇa by one worthy to live, mahātmanā broad-minded, tēna rāghavēṇa by that scion among the Raghus (Rama), śapē swear, manasā in mind, yat which, icchasi (you) wish, brūhi tell.

I swear in the name of the scion of the Raghu dynasty, the invincible, broad-minded
Rama, the best among men worthy of long life. Tell me what you have in mind.
yaṅ muhūrtamapaśyaṅstu na jīvēyamahaṅ dhruvam.

tēna rāmēṇa kaikēyi! śapē tē vacanakriyām৷৷2.11.7৷৷


kaikēyi Kaikeyi, yam whom, apaśyan without seeing, aham I, muhūrtam even for a moment, dhruvam this is certain, na jīvēyam cannot live, tēna rāmēṇa by such Rama, tē your, vacanakriyām in accordance with your wish, śapē I swear.

O Kaikeyi, in the name of Rama without seeing whom I, for sure, cannot live a momment, I swear I will fulfil your desire.
ātmanā vātmajaiścānyairvṛṇēyaṅ manujarṣabham.

tēna rāmēṇa kaikēyi! śapē tē vacanakriyām৷৷2.11.8৷৷


kaikēyi Kaikeyi, ātmanā vā by myself, anyaiḥ by others, ātmajaiśca my sons, yam whom, manujarṣabham best among men, vṛṇē I choose, tēna rāmēṇa by that Rama, tē your, vacanakriyām to fulfil your wish, śapē swear.

O Kaikeyi! I wish the best among men Rama well.Even at the expense of my life or the lives of the rest of my sons I swear in his name I shall fulfil your wish.
bhadrē hṛdayamapyētadanumṛśōddharasva mē.

ētatsamīkṣya kaikēyi! brūhi yatsādhu manyasē৷৷2.11.9৷৷


bhadrē O gentle lady! mē my, ētat this, hṛdayam heart, anumṛśya having touched, uddharasva save,
kaikēyi O Kaikeyi, ētat this, samīkṣya after considering, yat which, sādhu as good, manyasē you may consider, brūhi you may tell.

O gentle lady! my heart is sinking. Touch my heart and deliver me from distress. O Kaikeyi considering all this, tell me what you think is good.
balamātmani jānantī na māṅ śaṅkitumarhasi.

kariṣyāmi tava prītiṅ sukṛtēnāpi tē śapē৷৷2.11.10৷৷


ātmani in yourself, balam power, jānantī you know fully, mām me, śaṅkitum to doubt, na arhasi it does not behove you, sukṛtēnāpi on my merits, tē to you, śapē I swear, tava your, prītim pleasure, kariṣyē I shall do.

You know fully the authority you wield over me. Therefore, it does not behove you to doubt me. I swear on my acquired merits that I shall do whatever pleases you.
sā tadarthamanā dēvī tamabhiprāyamāgatam.

nirmādhyasthyācca harṣācca babhāṣē durvacaṅ vacaḥ৷৷2.11.11৷৷


tadarthamanāḥ bent upon her interests, dēvī queeni, āgatam her mind has set upon, tam abhiprāyam her wish, nirmādhyasthyāt with no alternate path, harṣāt ca rejoiced, durvacam unutterable, vacaḥ words, babhāṣē uttered.

Bent upon her interests, the queen cheered and expressed in unutterable words her premeditated wish which had no alternative.
tēna vākyēna saṅhṛṣṭā tamabhiprāyamāgatam.

vyājahāra mahāghōramabhyāgatamivāntakam৷৷2.11.12৷৷


tēna vākyēna by those words, saṅhṛṣṭā delighted, abhyāgatam suddenly struck, antakamiva like death, mahāghōram highly dreadful, āgatam that has come to her mind, tam abhiprāyam her wish, vyājahāra spoke.

Delighted by the words (of the king), Kaikeyi disclosed him her highly dreadful wish which entered her mind like a sudden visitation of death:
yathā kramēomṇa śapasi varaṅ mama dadāsi ca.

tacchṛṇvantu trayastriṅśaddēvāssāgnipurōgamāḥ৷৷2.11.13৷৷


sāgnipurōgamāḥ with fire-god in the forefront, trayastriṅśaddēvāḥ thirtythree (crore) gods, kramēṇa successively, yathā like, śapasi your are swearing, mama my, varam boon, dadāsi ca are giving, tat that, śṛṇvantu listen.

You are repeatedly swearing to grant me boons. Let the thirtythree crore gods headed by the fire-god, listen.
candrādityau nabhaścaiva grahā rātryahanī diśaḥ.

jagacca pṛthivī cēyaṅ sagandharvā sarākṣasā৷৷2.11.14৷৷

niśācarāṇi bhūtāni gṛhēṣu gṛhadēvatā!.

yāni cānyāni bhūtāni jānīyurbhāṣitaṅ tava৷৷2.11.15৷৷


candrādityau Moon and Sun, nabhaḥ ca ēva and the sky also, grahāḥ the planets, rātryahanī night and day, diśaḥ the (ten) quarters, jagacca the world, sagandharvā with all gandharvas, sarākṣasā with all rakshasas, iyam this, pṛthivī earth, niśācarāṇi night-rangers, bhūtāni all beings, gṛhēṣu in the houses, gṛhadēvatāḥ family deities, anyāni all other, yāni whosoever, bhūtāni beings, tava your, bhāṣitam words of promise, jānīyuḥ let them know.

Let the Moon and the Sun, the sky, the planets, night and day, the (ten) quarters the world, gandharvas, rakshasas, this earth, the nocturnal spirits all beings, family deities of every house and all other beings listen to your words of promise.
satyasandhō mahātējāḥ dharmajñaḥ susamāhitaḥ.

varaṅ mama dadātyēṣa tanmē śrṛṇvantu daivatāḥ৷৷2.11.16৷৷


satyasandha: true to his vows, mahātējāḥ heroic, dharmajñaḥ knows the ways of righteousness, susamāhitaḥ well-composed, ēṣaḥ this (Dasaratha), mama my, varam boon, dadāti is giving, daivatāḥ gods, tat that one, mē for my sake, śṛṇvantu hear.

King Dasaratha who is true to his vows, heroic and knows the ways of righteousness is granting me boons with a well-composed mind. Let all the gods stand witness to this (declared Kaikeyi).
iti dēvī mahēṣvāsaṅ parigṛhyābhiśasya ca.

tataḥ paramuvācēdaṅ varadaṅ kāmamōhitam৷৷2.11.17৷৷


dēvī queen, mahēṣvāsam great archer, parigṛhya having seized, abhiśasya ca having flattered, tataḥ param ca afterwards, varadam conferer of boons, kāmamōhitam infatuated, idam this word, uvāca said.

Clasping the great archer, the infatuated king, conferer of boons and flattering him (to the top of her bent), the queen said:
smara rājan purāvṛttaṅ tasmin daivāsurē raṇē.

tatra cācyāvayacchatrustava jīvitamantarā৷৷2.11.18৷৷


rājan O king, purā long ago, tasmin that, daivāsurē between gods and asuras, raṇē in the war, vṛttam event, smara recollect, tatra there, śatru: ca enemy too, tava your, jīvitam antarā except your life, acyāvayat pulled down.

O king, recall the event that happened long ago in the war between gods and asuras where the enemy destroyed all your forces except your life.
tatra cāpi mayā dēva yattvaṅ samabhirakṣitaḥ.

jāgratyā yatamānāyāstatō mē prādadā varau৷৷2.11.19৷৷


dēva O king! tatra ca there too, yat since, tvam you, mayā by me, samabhirakṣitaḥ were rescued, tataḥ for that reason, jāgratyāḥ fully alert, yatamānāyāḥ making efforts to protect you, mē to me, varau two boons, prādadāḥ you conferred.

O king, I rescued you there. Since I was alert to protect you, you granted me two
boons.
tau tu dattau varau dēva nikṣēpau mṛgayāmyaham.

tathaiva pṛthivīpāla sakāśē satyasaṅgara৷৷2.11.20৷৷


pṛthivīpāla O protector of the earth, satyasaṅgara one who is honest in keeping promises, dēva O king! tava your, sakāśē ēva with, nikṣēpau preserved as deposit (to be given in course of time), tau those, dattau given, varau tu boons, aham I, mṛgayāmi seeking.

O protector of the earth, O king, honest in keeping promises, I (now) seek those two boons which were reserved as deposits.
tat pratiśrutya dharmēṇa na cēddāsyasi mē varam.

adyaiva hi prahāsyāmi jīvitaṅ tvadvimānitā৷৷2.11.21৷৷


tat that, pratiśrutya having vowed, mē my, varam boon, dharmēṇa rightfully, na dāsyasi cēt if you do not grant, tvadvimānitā disgraced by you, adyaiva right away, jīvitam life, prahāsyāmi hi shall give up.

The boons you have vowed to give shall rightfully be given to me. If not, disgraced by you I shall give up my life right away.
vāṅmātrēṇa tadā rājā kaikēyyā svavaśē kṛtaḥ.

pracaskanda vināśāya pāśaṅ mṛga ivātmanaḥ৷৷2.11.22৷৷


tadā then, kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, vāṅmātrēṇa with words only, svavaśē under the control, kṛtaḥ
caught, rājā ca king also, mṛgaḥ iva like a deer, ātmanaḥ for his own, vināśāya for destruction, pāśam trap, pracaskanda jumped into.

The king now came under the control of Kaikeyi by his own words like a deer that jumps into the trap for its own destruction.
tataḥ paramuvācēdaṅ varadaṅ kāmamōhitam.

varau yau mē tvayā dēva! tadā dattau mahīpatē৷৷2.11.23৷৷

tau tāvadahamadyaiva vakṣyāmi śṛṇu mē vacaḥ.


tataḥ param thereafter, kāmamōhitam overcome by passion, varadam conferer of boons, idam this word, uvāca said, mahīpatē O lord of earth, dēva my lord, tadā then, mē to me, tvayā by yourself, yau varau those two boons, dattau were given, tau about them, adyaiva tāvat right now, vakṣyāmi I shall speak out , mē vacaḥ my words, śṛṇu listen.

Thereafter, she said to the infatuated king who had promised to confer her boons, O lord of the earth, O king, right now I shall speak to you about the two boons granted by you. Listen to my words.
abhiṣēkasamārambhō rāghavasyōpakalpitaḥ৷৷2.11.24৷৷

anēnaivābhiṣēkēṇa bharatō mē.bhiṣicyatām.


rāghavasya Rama's, abhiṣēkasamārambhaḥ preparations for consecration, upakalpitaḥ have been made, anēna abhiṣēkēṇaiva with these materials for installation, mē my, bharataḥ Bharata, abhiṣicyatām shall be crowned.

Preparations for Rama's consecration have been made. With these very materials for installation, my son Bharata should be consecrated.
yō dvitīyō varō dēva dattaḥ prītēna mē tvayā৷৷2.11.25৷৷

tadā daivāsurē yuddhē tasya kālō.yamāgata.


tadā then, daivāsurē yuddhē in the war between gods and asuras, prītēna pleased, tvayā by you, dēva Lord! mē to me, yaḥ which, dvitīya: second, varaḥ boon, dattaḥ was given, tasya for that, ayam this, kālaḥ time, āgataḥ has come.

Then in the war between gods and asuras, O lord!, pleased with me you have
promised a second boon and the time has come to grant it.
nava pañca ca varṣāṇi daṇḍakāraṇyamāśritaḥ৷৷2.11.26৷৷

cīrājinajaṭādhārī rāmō bhavatu tāpasaḥ.


rāmaḥ Rama, nava pañca ca varṣāṇi for fourteen (nine and five) years, daṇḍakāraṇyam Dandaka forest, āśritaḥ resorted to, cīrājinajaṭādhārī clad in tattered (bark) and deer skin and wearing matted locks, tāpasaḥ like an ascetic, bhavatu shall remain (in the forest.)

Consigned to the Dandaka forest for fourteen years, clad in bark and deer skin and wearing matted hair, Rama shall live like an ascetic.
bharatō bhajatāmadya yauvarājyamakaṇṭakam৷৷2.11.27৷৷

ēṣa mē paramaḥ kāmō dattamēva varaṅ vṛṇē.

adya caiva hi paśyēyaṅ prayāntaṅ rāghavaṅ vanam৷৷2.11.28৷৷


adya now, bharataḥ Bharata, akaṇṭakam without any thorns(rivals), yauvarājyam as prince-regent, bhajatām let him enjoy, ēṣaḥ this, mē my, paramaḥ great, kāmaḥ desire, dattaṅ varamēva already granted boon, vṛṇē I am asking for, adya caiva now itself, vanam to the forest, prayāntaṅ departing to the forest, rāghavam to the scion of the Raghus (Rama), paśyēyam I shall see.

Let Bharata be prince-regent without any rivals. This is my great desire. I am asking for an already granted boon. Let me see Rama's departure to the forest today itself.
sa rājarājaḥ bhava satyasaṅgaraḥ

kulaṅ ca śīlaṅ ca hi rakṣa janma ca.

paratravāsē hi vadantyanuttamaṅ

tapōdhanāssatyavacō hitaṅ nṛṇām৷৷2.11.29৷৷


rājarājaḥ king of kings, saḥ you are such, satyasaṅgaraḥ bhava be true to your vows, kulaṅ ca your race , śīlaṅ ca character, janma ca birth, rakṣa hi protect, nṛṇām for men, paratra in the other world, vāsē for existence, satyavacaḥ merits of truth, anuttamam no superior, hitam welfare, tapōdhanāḥ those having ascetism as wealth, sages, vadanti hi are saying.

O king of kings, by being true to your vow, protect your race, character and lineage. Those sages whose ascetism is their wealth maintain that there is no merit superior to truthfulness which can confer man a place in the other world.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē ēkādaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the eleventh sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
