[Rama and Sita depart from Chitrakuta --- meet sage Atri and Anasuya.]

rāghava stvatha yātēṣu tapasviṣu vicintayan.

na tatrārōcayadvāsaṅ kāraṇairbahubhistadā৷৷2.117.1৷৷


atha then, rāghavastu as for Rama, tapasviṣu ascetics, yātēṣu when departed, vicintayan thinking over, bahubhiḥ for many, kāraṇaiḥ reasons, tadā then, tatra there, vāsam to reside, nārōcayat did not like.

When the ascetics had departed, Rama thought over the matter well and did not like to reside there for many reasons.
iha mē bharatō dṛṣṭō mātaraśca sanāgarāḥ.

sā ca mē smṛtiranvēti tānnityamanuśōcataḥ৷৷2.117.2৷৷


mē to me, iha here, bharataḥ Bharata, dṛṣṭaḥ has been seen, sanāgarāḥ with the citzens of Ayodhya, mātaraśca mothers also, nityam always, tān about them, anuśōcataḥ filled with grief, mē to me, sā smṛtiḥ ca that memory, anvēti is chasing.

It is here that Bharata, mothers along with citizens of Ayodhya have visited me. That memory soaked with grief is chasing me.
skandhāvāranivēśēna tēna tasya mahātmanaḥ.

hayahastikarīṣaiśca upamardaḥ kṛtō bhṛśam৷৷2.117.3৷৷


mahātmanaḥ magnanimous, tasya Bharata's, tēna by that, skandhāvāranivēśēna with the encampment of army, hayahastikarīṣaiśca with the dung of horses and elephants, bhṛśam exceedingly, upamarthaḥ dirty, kṛtaḥ has been made.

Due to the encampment of the army of the magnanimous Bharata (here), this place has been filled with the dung of horses and elephants and made exceedingly dirty.
tasmādanyatra gacchāma iti sañcintya rāghavaḥ.

prātiṣṭhata sa vaidēhyā lakṣmaṇēna ca saṅgataḥ৷৷2.117.4৷৷


tasmāt therefore, anyatra to some other place, gacchāma let us go, iti thus, sañcintya having resolved, saḥ that, rāghavaḥ Rama, vaidēhyā with Sita, lakṣmaṇēna with Lakshmana, saṅgataḥ
accompanied by, prātiṣṭhata set forth.

We shall, therefore, go to some other place, having resolved thus, Rama accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana set forth.
sō.trērāśramamāsādya taṅ vavandē mahāyaśāḥ.

taṅ cāpi bhagavānatriḥ putravatpratyapadyata৷৷2.117.5৷৷


mahāyaśāḥ illustrious one, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, atrēḥ Atri's, āśramam hermitage, āsādya having reached, tam to that sage, vavandē prostrated, bhagavān the revered, atriḥ Atri, api also, taṅ him as well, putravat like a son, pratyapadyata received.

Having reached the hermitage of the revered sage Atri, illustrious Rama prostrated before him and Atri also received him as his son.
svayamātithyamādiśya sarvamanyatsusatkṛtam.

saumitriṅ ca mahābhāgāṅ sītāṅ ca samasāntvayat৷৷2.117.6৷৷


(asya of Rama), susatkṛtam rendered befitting hospitality, sarvam in all ways, ātithyam hospitality, svayam himself, ādiśya ca having ordered, mahābhāgām highly virtuous, sītāṅ ca Sita, saumitriṅ ca also Lakshmana, samasāntvayat treated with kind words.

That sage Atri himself extended to Rama the hospitality befitting him in all possible ways and treated Lakshmana and highly virtuous Sita with kind words.
patnīṅ ca samanuprāptāṅ vṛddhāmāmantrya satkṛtām.

sāntvayāmāsa dharmajñaḥ sarvabhūtahitē rataḥ৷৷2.117.7৷৷


dharmajñaḥ knower of the ways of righteousness, sarvabhūtahitē in the welfare of all beings, rataḥ engaged, samanuprāptām who had just come there, satkṛtām revered by all, vṛddhām aged, patnī ca
his wife also, āmantrya called out, sāntvayāmāsa said kind words.

Conversant in the ways of righteousness and eagaged in the welfate of all beings, sage Atri called out his aged wife who is revered by all and spoke kind words to her.
ānasūyāṅ mahābhāgāṅ tāpasīṅ dharmacāriṇīm

pratigṛhṇīṣva vaidēhīmabravīdṛṣisattamaḥ.

rāmāya cā.cacakṣē tāṅ tāpasīṅ dharmacāriṇīm৷৷2.117.8৷৷


ṛṣisattamaḥ excellent among the sages (Atri), vaidēhīm Sita, pratigṛhṇīṣva receive, mahābhāgām highly virtuous, tāpasīm female ascetic, dharmacāriṇīm who adheres to righteousness, anasūyām to Anasuya, abravīt said, dharmacāriṇīm who followed the ways of righteousness, tāṅ tāpasīm about his ascetic wife Anasuya, rāmāya to Rama, ācacakṣē ca related.

Atri, who was excellent among the sages said to his ascetic wife who was highly virtuous and an adherent of righteousness, Welcome Sita. Thereafter, he related to Rama a story about his asetic wife who follows the ways of righteousness.
daśa varṣāṇyanāvṛṣṭyā dagdhē lōkē nirantaram৷৷2.117.9৷৷

yayā mūlaphalē sṛṣṭē jāhnavī ca pravartitā.

ugrēṇa tapasā yuktā niyamaiścāpyalaṅkṛtā৷৷2.117.10৷৷

daśa varṣa sahāsrāṇi tayā taptaṅ mahattapaḥ.

anasūyā vratai ssnātā pratyūhāśca nivartitāḥ৷৷2.117.11৷৷

dēvakāryanimittaṅ ca yayā santvaramāṇayā.

daśarātraṅ kṛtā rātri ssēyaṅ mātēva tē.nagha৷৷2.117.12৷৷


anagha O blameless one (Rama), lōkē in this world, daśavarṣāṇi ten years, anāvṛṣṭyā by
drought, nirantaram constantly, dagdhē devastated, yayā by whom, mūlaphalē roots and fruits, sṛṣṭē were created, jāhnavī ca Ganga, pravartitā caused to flow, ugrēṇa rigid, tapasā with
mortifications, yuktā engaged, niyamaiśca api with self-imposed religious observances, alaṅkṛtā decorated, yayā by whom, daśavarṣasahasrāṇi for ten thousand years, mahat severe, tapaḥ asceticism, taptam was practised, dēvakāryanimittam for the sake of gods, santvaramāṇayā by her eagerly, yayā by whom, pratyūhāṅ impediments, nivartitāḥ have been averted, daśarātraṅ ten nights, rātriḥ as night, kṛtā was converted, sā such, vrataiḥ snātā bathed in her vow, iyam anasūyā this Anasuya, tē to you, mātēva like a mother.

O blameless one (Rama), once this world was consecutively ravaged by drought for ten years. It was the virtuous Anasuya who created roots and fruits and caused Ganga to flow. She was engaged in severe mortifications and self-imposed religious observances. She practised severe asceticism for ten thousand years bathed in her vows. Solicited on behalf of the gods, she removed all impediments and converted ten nights into one. She is like a your mother to you.
tāmimāṅ sarvabhūtānāṅ namaskāryāṅ yaśasvinīm

abhigacchatu vaidēhī vṛddhāmakrōdhanāṅ sadā.

anasūyēti yā lōkē karmabhiḥ khyātimāgatā৷৷2.117.13৷৷


sarvabhūtānām for all beings, namaskāryām worthy of adoration, yaśasvinīm illustrious lady, vṛddhām aged, sadā always, akrōdhanām free from anger, tām to such a woman, imām this Anasuya, vaidēhī Sita, abhigacchatu let her approach, yā who, karmabhiḥ with deeds, ānasūyēti as Anasuya, khyātim renown, āgatā has acquired.

'She is renowned throughout this world for her deeds as Anasuya, (one who is free from anger). Aged, illustrious she is free frm anger, worthy of adoration by all beings. Let Sita approach her'.
ēvaṅ bruvāṇaṅ tamṛṣiṅ tathētyuktvā sa rāghavaḥ.

sītāmuvāca dharmajñāmidaṅ vacanamuttamam৷৷2.117.14৷৷


saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, ēvam in this way, bruvāṇam speaking, tam ṛṣim that sage, tathēti be it
so, uktvā having said, dharmajñām wise in the ways of righteousness, sītām Sita, uttamam excellent, idaṅ vacanam these words, uvāca said.

Hearing those words of the sage, Rama said be it so and said to righteous Sita these choice words.
rājaputri! śrutamidaṅ munērasya samīritam.

śrēyō.rthamātmanaśśīghramabhigaccha tapasvinīm৷৷2.117.15৷৷


rājaputri! O princess (Sita), asya munēḥ of this sage, idaṅ samīritam this saying, śrutam has been heard, ātmanaḥ for your, śrēyō.rtham for your welfare, śīghram without delay, tapasvinīm ascetic, abhigaccha you may approach.

O princess, you have heard the message of the sage. Without delay approach the ascetic (Anasuya) for your welfare.
sītā tvētadvacaśśṛtvā rāghavasya hitaiṣiṇaḥ.

tāmatripantīṅ dharmajñāmabhicakrāma maithilī৷৷2.117.16৷৷


maithilī daughter of the king of Mithila, sītā tu Sita, hitaiṣiṇaḥ wishing her welfare, rāghavasya Rama's, ētadvacaḥ words, śṛtvā hearing, dharmajñām knower of righteousness, tām to that, atripatnīm wife of Atri (Devi Anasuya), abhicakrāma circumamabulated in reverence.

Having heard the words of Rama, intended for her welfare, Sita, daughter of the king of Mithila, approached the consort of Atri (Devi Anasuya), knower of righteousness, and reverently circumambulated her.
śithilāṅ valitāṅ vṛddhāṅ jarāpāṇḍuramūrdhajām.

satataṅ vēpamānāṅgīṅ pravātē kadalīṅ yathā৷৷ 2.117.17৷৷

tāṅ tu sītā mahābhāgāmanasūyāṅ pativratām.

abhyavādayadavyagrā svaṅnāma samudāharat৷৷2.117.18৷৷


sītā Sita, śithilām feeble, valitām with wrinkles, vṛddhām old, jarāpāṇḍuramūrdhajām hair turned grey due to old age, pravātē in stormy wind, kadalīṅ yathā like a plantain tree, satatam constantly, vēpamānāṅgīm her body trembling, mahābhāgām highly fortunate, pativratām chaste woman, tām anasūyām that Anasuya, avyagrā without haste, abhyavādayat made obeisance, svanāma her name, samudāharat pronounced.

Highly chaste and fortunate Anasuya was very old and feeble. Her skin was wrinkled and her hair turned grey due to old age. Her body was constantly trembling like a plantain tree in a stormy wind. Pronouncing her name to such Anasuya, Sita made obeisance to her with utmost concentration.
abhivādya ca vaidēhī tāpasīṅ tāmaninditām.

baddhāñjalipuṭā hṛṣṭā paryapṛcchadanāmayam৷৷2.117.19৷৷


vaidēhī Sita, aninditām blameless, tāṅ tāpasīm to that asceetic (Anasuya), abhivādya after paying her homage, baddhāñjalipuṭā folding the palms, hṛṣṭā delighted lady, anāmayam well-being, paryapṛcchat enquired.

Sita offered her obeisance to the blameless ascetic, Anasuya, folding her palms and enquired of her well-being in delight.
tatassītāṅ mahābhāgāṅ dṛṣṭvā tāṅ dharmacāriṇīm.

sāntvayantyabravīddhṛṣṭā diṣṭyā dharmamavēkṣasē৷৷2.117.20৷৷


tataḥ then, mahābhāgām glorious lady, dharmacāriṇīm engaged in righteous acts, tāṅ sītām that
Sita, sāntvayantī consoling, hṛṣṭā in delight, abravīt said, diṣṭyā fortunately, dharmam rightful duty, avēkṣasē you are observing.

Anasuya was delighted to see the glorious Sita who was always engaged in righteous acts and said in kind words, You are fortunate. You are observing your rightful duty.
tyaktvā jñātijanaṅ sītē mānamṛddhaṅ ca bhāmini.

avaruddhaṅ vanē rāmaṅ diṣṭyā tvamanugacchasi৷৷2.117.21৷৷


bhāminaḥ sītē O noble Sita, tvam you, diṣṭyā by the grace of heaven, jñātijanam your kins, mānam pride, ṛddhaṅ ca wealth, tyaktvā after forsaking, vanē in the forest, avaruddham confined, rāmam Rama, anugacchasi you are following.

O noble Sita, by the grace of heaven you are following Rama, forsaking your kinsmen and wealth and confining yourself to the forest.
nagarasthō vanasthō vā pāpō vā yadi vā śubhaḥ.

yāsāṅ strīṇāṅ priyō bhartā tāsāṅ lōkā mahōdayāḥ৷৷2.117.22৷৷


yāsām those, strīṇām women, nagarasthaḥ in the city, vanasthō vā or in the forest, pāpō vā or sinful, yadi vā or, śubhaḥ virtuous, bhartā husband, priyaḥ dear, tāsām for them, mahōdayāḥ highly promising, lōkaḥ worlds.

One who is devoted to her husband, whether he be in the city or in the forest, whether he is sinful or virtuous, will attain the most prosperous worlds.
duśśīlaḥ kāmavṛttō vā dhanairvā parivarjitaḥ.

strīṇāmāryasvabhāvānāṅ paramaṅ daivataṅ patiḥ৷৷2.117.23৷৷


āryasvabhāvānām of noble nature, strīṇām for women, duśśīlaḥ a man of bad character, kāmavṛttō vā or licentious, dhanaiḥ with riches, parivarjitō vā or devoid of, patiḥ husband, paramam is supreme, daivatam is deity.

For a woman of noble nature her husband, whether he be licentious or of bad character or devoid of riches, is her supreme lord.
nātō viśiṣṭaṅ paśyāmi bāndhavaṅ vimṛśantyaham.

sarvatra yōgyaṅ vaidēhi! tapaḥ kṛtamivāvyayam৷৷2.117.24৷৷


vaidēhi Sita, aham I, sarvatra all over, vimṛśantī reflecting, kṛtam performed, avyayam imperishable, yōgyam befitting, tapaḥ iva like austerities, ataḥ more than husband, viśiṣṭam better, bāndhavam relation, na paśyāmi I do not see.

O Sita, on reflection I know of none who is a better friend than the husband. He, like an imperishable penance, once acquired is never lost.
na tvēvamavagacchanti guṇadōṣamasattsriyaḥ.

kāmavaktavyahṛdayā bhartṛnāthāścaranti yāḥ৷৷2.117.25৷৷


yāḥ those women, kāmavaktavyahṛdayāḥ with minds overpowerd by carnal desires, bhartṛnāthāḥ as lords of their husbands, caranti ranging at will, asattsriyaḥ such wicked women, ēvam in this way, guṇadōṣam vice and virtue, na avagacchanti do not understand.

Those wicked women whose minds are overpowered by carnal desires, ranging at will as lords of their husbands, do not understand about vice and virtue.
prāpnuvantya yaśaścaiva dharmabhraṅśaṅ ca maithili.

akāryavaśamāpannāḥ striyō yāḥ khalu tadvidhāḥ৷৷2.117.26৷৷


maithili O Sita, tadvidhāḥ such, striyaḥ women, akāryavaśam the influence of unworthy acts, āpannaḥ having obtained, ayaśaśca infamy, pāpnuvanti are obtaining, dharmabhraṅśaṅ ca dislodged from the state of righteousness.

O Sita, those women under the control of unworthy acts are dislodged from the path
of righteousness and get infamy.
tvadvidhāstu guṇairyuktā dṛṣṭa lōka parāvarāḥ.

striya ssvargē cariṣyanti yathā dharmakṛtastathā৷৷2.117.27৷৷


guṇaiḥ with virtues, yuktāḥ endowed with, dṛṣṭalōkaparāvarā who can distinguish between good and bad in the world, tvadvidhāḥ like you, striyastu women, dharmakṛtaḥ doing virtuous deeds, yathā
as to how, tathā that way, svargē in heaven, cariṣyanti will range about.

Women like you who are endowed with virtues and can distinguish between good and bad in this world, like those who perform virtuous deeds, will move about in heaven.
tadēvamēnaṅ tvamanuvratā satī pativratānāṅ samayānuvartinī.

bhava svabhartu ssahadharmacāriṇī yaśaśca dharmaṅ ca tata ssamāpsyasi৷৷2.117.28৷৷


tat for that reason, tvam you, ēnam this (Rama), anuvratā satī being devoted to your husband, pativratānām of chaste women, samayānuvartinī following at all times, svabhartuḥ to your husband, sahadharmacariṇī bhava be a virtuous wife, tataḥ from that, yaśaśca renown, dharmaṅ ca and virtue, samāpsyasi will obtain.

Therefore, always following your husband, upholding the traditions of chaste women, carrying out worthy and timely duties, be a virtuous wife to your husband. You will thus obtain renown and virtue.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē saptadaśōttaraśatatamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the hundredseventeenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
