[Lamentations of king Dasaratha.]

tataśśṛtvā mahārājaḥ kaikēyyā dāruṇaṅ vacaḥ.

cintāmabhisamāpēdē muhūrtaṅ pratatāpa ca৷৷2.12.1৷৷


mahārājaḥ maharaja kaikēyyāḥ Kaikeyi's, dāruṇam dreadful, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, tataḥ thereafter, cintām grief, abhisamāpēdē got, muhūrtam for a moment, pratatāpa ca was extremely distressed.

After hearing the dreadful words of Kaikeyi, the maharaja (Dasaratha), engulfed in grief, was extremely distressed for a moment.
kinnu mē yadi vā svapnaścittamōhō.pi vā mama.

anubhūtōpasargō vā manasō vāpyupadravaḥ৷৷2.12.2৷৷


mē my, svapnaḥ kiṅ nu is this a dream?, yadi vā or, mama my, cittamōhō.pi vā or hallucination of the mind?, anubhūtōpasargō vā or some foreboding of evil I am going to experience , manasaḥ mind's, upadravaḥ vā or a malady.

' Is this a dream? Or a hallucination of the mind? Or some foreboding evil I am going to experience or a malady of my mind'? (wondered Dasaratha)
iti sañcintya tadrājā nādhyagacchattadāsukham.

pratilabhya cirātsaṅjñāṅ kaikēyīvākyatāḍitaḥ৷৷2.12.3৷৷

vyathitō viklabaścaiva vyāghrīṅ dṛṣṭvā yathā mṛgaḥ.

asaṅvṛtāyāmāsīnō jagatyāṅ dīrghamucchavasan৷৷2.12.4৷৷

maṇḍalē pannagō ruddhō mantrairiva mahāviṣaḥ.

ahō dhigiti sāmarṣō vācamuktvā narādhipaḥ৷৷2.12.5৷৷

mōhamāpēdivānbhūya śśōkōpahatacētanaḥ.


rājā king, iti thus, tat about that , sañcitya having thought over, tadā then, sukham comfort, nādhyagacchat did not get, kaikēyīvākyatāḍitaḥ struck by the words of Kaikeyi, narādhipaḥ king, cirāt after a long time, saṅjñām senses, pratilabhya having regained, vyāghrīm a tigress, dṛṣṭvā having seen, mṛgaḥ yathā like a deer, vyathitaḥ distressed, viklabaḥ ca ēva startled, asaṅvṛtāyām uncovered, jagatyām on the ground, āsīnaḥ having sat down, maṇḍalē in a circle, mantrai: by incantations, ruddhaḥ confined, mahāviṣaḥ highly venomous, pannagaḥ iva like a serpent, dīrgham intense, ucchavasan heaving, sāmarṣaḥ with indignation, āhō dhik what a pity, iti thus,
vācam word, uktvā having spoken, śōkōpahatacētanaḥ with his senses struck by sorrow, bhūyaḥ again, mōham loss of consciousness, āpēdivān obtained.

The King absorbed in such thoughts did not get solace. He was startled and distressed like a deer beholding a tigress. He had long lost the senses struck by the (ruthless) words of Kaikeyi. He sank down upon the bare floor heaving deep sighs like a venomous serpent lying confined in a circle. 'What a pity' said the king with indignation and with his senses overwhelmed by sorrow fell into a stupor again.
rēṇa tu nṛpa ssaṅjñāṅ pratilabhya suduḥkhitaḥ৷৷2.12.6৷৷

kaikēyīmabravītkruddhaḥpradahanniva cakṣuṣā.


nṛpaḥ the king, cirēṇa after a long time, saṅjñām consciousness, pratilabhya having regained, suduḥkhitaḥ distressed, kruddhaḥ angry, cakṣuṣā with eyes, kaikēyīm Kaikeyi, pradahanniva as if burning, abravīt spoke.

Regaining his consciousness after a long time, the king in deep grief and with eyes as though burning in anger looked at Kaikeyi and said:
nṛśaṅsē! duṣṭacāritrē! kulasyāsya vināśini!৷৷2.12.7৷৷

kiṅ kṛtaṅ tava rāmēṇa pāpaṅ pāpē! mayāpi vā.


nṛśaṅsē O cruel woman, duṣṭacāritrē of wicked character, asya kulasya of this family, vināśini destroyer, pāpē sinful woman, rāmēṇa by Rama, mayāpi vā or by me, tava your, kiṅ pāpaṅ kṛtam what harm has been done?

O woman of cruel and sinful nature, you are bent on destroying this family. What harm has been done to you by Rama or by me?
yadā tē jananītulyāṅ vṛttiṅ vahati rāghava: ৷৷2.12.8৷৷

tasyaiva tvamanarthāya kiṅnimittamihōdyatā .


rāghavaḥ Rama, yadā when tē in relation to you, jananītulyām like his own mother, vṛttim conduct, vahati was carrying out, tasyaiva to such a person, anarthāya for injustice, tvam you, kiṅ nimittam for what purpose, iha here, udyatā are you attempting?

Then Rama was conducting himself in relation to you as his own mother, for what purpose are you seeking injustice to such a person?
tvaṅ mayā৷৷tmavināśārthaṅ bhavanaṅ svaṅ pravēśitā৷৷2.12.9৷৷

avijñānānnṛpasutā vyālī tīkṣṇaviṣā yathā.


tvam you, nṛpasutā king's daughter, mayā by me, tīkṣṇaviṣā venomous, vyālī yathā like a female serpent, avijñānāt by ignorance, svaṅ bhavanam my home, ātma vināśārtham for self-destruction, pravēśitā ushered in.

In my ignorance I brought home for my self-destruction a king's daughter who was like a venomous female serpent.
jīvalōkō yadā sarvō rāmasyāha guṇastavam৷৷2.12.10৷৷

aparādhaṅ kimuddiśya tyakṣyāmīṣṭamahaṅ sutam.


yadā when, sarvaḥ all, jīvalōkaḥ living beings of the world, rāmasya Rama's, guṇastavam extoling virtues, āha is telling, (then), kam what, aparādham crime, uddhiśya showing, aham I, iṣṭaṅ sutam beloved son, tyakṣyāmi I shall abandon.

When all living beings of this world are extoling the virtues of Rama, for what crime should I abandon my beloved son?
kausalyāṅ vā sumitrāṅ vā tyajēyamapi vā śriyam৷৷2.12.11৷৷

jīvitaṅ vā.tmanō rāmaṅ na tvēva pitṛvatsalam.


kauśalyāṅ vā even Kausalya, sumitrāṅ vā or even Sumitra, śriyamapi vā wealth, ātmanaḥ my own , jīvitaṅ vā life also, tyajēyam shall give up, pitṛvatsalam who is devoted to his father, rāmaṅ tu Rama, na will not leave.

I shall give up Kausalya or Sumitra or all my wealth or even my own life but I cannot leave Rama who is devoted to his father.
parā bhavati mē prītirdṛṣṭvā tanayamagrajam৷৷2.12.12৷৷

apaśyatastu mē rāmaṅ naṣṭā bhavati cētanā.


agrajam first-born, tanayam son, dṛṣṭvā having seen, mē my, parā supreme, prītiḥ bhavati will be my delight, rāmam Rama, apaśyatastu but if I do not see him, mē my, cētanā life, naṣṭā bhavati is destroyed.

When I see my first-born , I experience supreme delight. But if I do not see him, my
life loses its meaning.
tiṣṭhēllōkō vinā sūryaṅ śasyaṅ vā salilaṅ vinā৷৷2.12.13৷৷

na tu rāmaṅ vinā dēhē tiṣṭhēttu mama jīvitam.


lōkaḥ world, sūryaṅ vinā without the Sun, tiṣṭhēt can exist, sasyam crops, salilaṅ vinā vā without water, tu but, rāmaṅ vinā without Rama, mama dēhē my body, jīvitam life, na tiṣṭhēt shall not exist.

This world can exist without the Sun or crops (can be grown) without water but without Rama, life would not exist in my body.
tadalaṅ tyajyatāmēṣa niścayaḥ pāpaniścayē!৷৷2.12.14৷৷

api tē caraṇai mūrdhnā spṛśāmyēṣa prasīda mē.


pāpaniścayē O lady of evil intentions, tat for that reason, alam enough, ēṣaḥ such, niścayaḥ intention, tyajyatām give up, ēṣaḥ here I, tē caraṇau your feet, mūrdhnā with my head, spṛśāmyapi
will touch, mē my (to me), prasīda you may be pleased.

O lady of evil intentions, enough of this. Give up your resolve. Here I touch your feet with my head. Be pleased with me.
kimidaṅ cintitaṅ pāpē tvayā paramadāruṇam৷৷2.12.15৷৷

atha jijñāsasē māṅ tvaṅ bharatasya priyāpriyē.

astu yattattvayā pūrvaṅ vyāhṛtaṅ rāghavaṅ prati৷৷2.12.16৷৷

sa mē jyēṣṭhassuta śrīmāndharmajyēṣṭha itīva mē.

tattvayā priyavādinyā sēvārthaṅ kathitaṅ bhavēt৷৷2.12.17৷৷


pāpē O sinful one, tvayā by you, paramadāruṇam most dreadful, idam this, kim why, cintitam thought, atha or, tvam you, mām me, bharatasya Bharata's, priyāpriyē about likes or dislikes, jijñāsasē enquire, astu let it be so, tvayā by you, rāghavaṅ prati speaking of Rama, śrīmān noble, saḥ that Rama, mē my, dharmajyēṣṭhaḥ foremost in discharging his duties, sutaḥ son, itīva like this, pūrvam earlier, tat that , yat what words, vyāhṛtam uttered, tat those, priyavādinyā by a woman speaking sweet words, tvayā by you, sēvārtham only to serve(please) me, kathitaṅ bhavēt could have been said.

O sinful one! why have you got this most dreadful thought? Do you want to know my likes or dislikes about Bharata? Let them be so.But speaking of Rama earlier, you used to say, 'Rama is my eldest son. He is noble and foremost in discharging his duties.' Such sweet words could not have been said only to please me.
tacchrutvā śōkasantaptā santāpayasi māṅ bhṛśam.

āviṣṭā.si gṛhaṅ śūnyaṅ sā tvaṅ paravaśaṅ gatā৷৷2.12.18৷৷


tat further, sā tvam you are such, paravaśaṅgatā under the influence of others, śrutvā hearing their words, śōkasantaptā tormented with sorrow, śūnyaṅ gṛham empty chamber of wrath, āviṣṭā asi you have entered, mām me, bhṛśam greatly, santāpayasi causing me great pain.

Further you are tormented with sorrow under the influence of others' insinuations. You are causing me great pain by entering the empty chamber of wrath.
ikṣvākūṇāṅ kulē dēvi! samprāptassumahānayam.

anayō nayasampannē yatra tē vikṛtā matiḥ৷৷2.12.19৷৷


nayasampannē endowed with a moral sense, dēvi O queen, yatra wherever, tē your, matiḥ mind, vikṛtā changed, ikṣvākuṇāṅ kulē in the Ikshvaku race, sumahān very great, ayam this, anayaḥ immorality, samprāptaḥ has befallen.

O queen, till now you had a moral sense. With your mind debased (now), a very great immorality has infected the Ikshvaku race.
nahi kiñcidayuktaṅ vā vipriyaṅ vā purā mama.

akarōstvaṅ viśālākṣi tēna na śraddadhāmyaham৷৷2.12.20৷৷


viśālākṣi O large-eyed lady, purā in the past, mama to me, kiñcit even little, ayuktaṅ vā improper, vipriyaṅ vā or unpalatable, tvam you, na akarōḥ did not render, tēna for that reason, aham I na śraddadhāmi do not believe.

O large-eyed lady, you have never done anything improper or unpalatable towards me in the past. Therefore I do not believe your words.
nanu tē rāghavastulyō bharatēna mahātmanā.

bahuśō hi subālē tvaṅ kathāḥ kathayasē mama৷৷2.12.21৷৷


tē to you, rāghavaḥ Raghava, mahātmanā high-souled, bharatēna with Bharata, tulyaḥ nanu is equal indeed, subālē O childish one, tvam you, bahuśaḥ several times, mama to me, kathāḥ kathayasē (mama) hi used to tell (me).

O childish one, you used to tell me several times that Rama is as dear to you as the high-souled Bharata.
tasya dharmātmanō dēvi! vanavāsaṅ yaśasvinaḥ.

kathaṅ rōcayasē bhīru! nava varṣāṇi pañca ca৷৷2.12.22৷৷


bhīru! O lady, dēvi! O queen, dharmātmanaḥ of that righteous one, yaśasvinaḥ illustrious, tasya his, nava pañca ca varṣāṇi fourteen years, vanavāsam to dwell in the forest, katham how, rōcayasē wish?

O lady! how do you wish this righteous and illustrious Rama to dwell in the forest for fourteen years?
atyantasukumārasya tasya dharmē dhṛtātmanaḥ.

kathaṅ rōcayasē vāsamaraṇyē bhṛśadāruṇē৷৷2.12.23৷৷


atyantasukumārasya exceedingly tender one, dharmē in virtues, dhṛtātmanaḥ firm-minded one, tasya his (Rama's), bhṛśadāruṇē very dreadful, araṇyē in the forest, vāsam to dwell, katham why, rōcayasē you like?

Why do you want Rama who is so tender and a firm follower of dharma to dwell in the highly dreadful forest?
rōcayasyabhirāmasya rāmasya śubhalōcanē!.

tava śuśrūṣamāṇasya kimarthaṅ vipravāsanam৷৷2.12.24৷৷


śubhalōcanē! O woman of beautiful eyes, tava to you, śuśrūṣamāṇasya desirous of serving, abhirāmasya charming, rāmasya Rama's, vipravāsanam exile to a distant place, kimartham why, rōcayasi do you desire?

O woman with attractive eyes, why do you want Rama who is so charming and serving you to be exiled to a distant place?
rāmō hi bharatādbhūyastava śuśrūṣatē sadā.

viśēṣaṅ tvayi tasmāttu bharatasya na lakṣayē৷৷2.12.25৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, bharatāt more than Bharata, bhūyaḥ still more, sadā always, tava to you, śuśrūṣatē is doing service, tasmāttu for that reason also, tvayi in you, bharatasya Bharata's, viśēṣam speciality, na lakṣayē I do not see.

Rama is doing greater service to you than Bharata. Therefore, I do not find any reason for you to have a special love for Bharata.
śuśrūṣāṅ gauravaṅ caiva pramāṇaṅ vacanakriyām.

kastē bhūyastaraṅ kuryādanyatra manujarṣabhāt৷৷2.12.26৷৷

bahūnāṅ strīsahasrāṇāṅ bahūnāṅ cōpajīvinām.


bahūnām many, strīsahasrāṇām thousands of women, bahūnām many, upajīvinām attendants, anyatra manujarṣabhāt other than Rama who is the best among men, kaḥ who, tē to you, bhūyastaram great, śuśrūṣām service, gauravam honour, pramāṇaṅ caiva trusting your words as true, vacanakriyām carrying out your orders, kuryāt will do?

There are many thousands of women and attendants (in the inner apartment), but who will do greater service and honour you more than Rama, the best among men in the execution of your orders.
parivādō.pavādō vā rāghavē nōpapadyatē৷৷2.12.27৷৷

sāntvayansarvabhūtāni rāma śśuddhēna cētasā.

gṛhṇāti manujavyāghra priyairviṣayavāsinaḥ৷৷2.12.28৷৷


rāghavē in the matter of Rama, parivādaḥ word of blame, apavādō vā or word of reproach, nōpapadyatē does not aply to him, manujavyāghraḥ a tiger among men, rāmaḥ Rama, śuddhēna with pure, cētasā heart, sarvabhūtāni all beings, sāntvayan while appeasing, viṣayavāsinaḥ inhabitants of the country, priyaiḥ by doing acts dear to them, gṛhṇāti attracts them.

The best among men, Rama has won the trust of the inhabitants of the country by securing their affection with a pure heart and by doing acts dear to them. Therefore, neither a word of blame nor reproach applies to this scion of the Raghu dynasty (Rama).
satyēna lōkān jayati dīnān dānēna rāghavaḥ.

gurūñchuśrūṣayā vīrō dhanuṣā yudhi śātravān৷৷2.12.29৷৷


vīraḥ hero, rāghavaḥ Rama, satyēna by truth, lōkān the people, dānēna by charity, dīnān the poor, jayati wins over, śuśrūṣayā by his service, gurūn his preceptors, yudhi in battle, dhanuṣā by the power of his bow, śātravān enemies, jayati conquers.

Rama is a hero who wins over the people by his truthfulness, the poor by charity, the preceptors by his service and the enemies in the battle by the power of his bow.
satyaṅ dānaṅ tapastyāgō mitratā śaucamārjavam.

vidyā ca guruśuśrūṣā dhruvāṇyētāni rāghavē৷৷2.12.30৷৷


satyam truth, dānam munificence, tapaḥ asceticism, tyāgaḥ renunciation, śaucam purity, ārjavam uprightness, vidyā ca also learning, guruśuśrūṣā service to his superiors, ētāni all these, rāghavē in Rama, dhruvāṇi are firmly fixed.

Truth, munificence, asceticism, renunciation, purity, uprightness, learning and service to his superiors all those (virtues) are firmly planted in this descendant of the Raghus.
tasminnārjavasampannē dēvi! dēvōpamē katham.

pāpamāśaṅsasē rāmē maharṣisamatējasi৷৷2.12.31৷৷


dēvi O Devi! ārjavasampannē one endowed with uprightness, dēvōpamē resembling gods, maharṣisamatējasi equal to great ascetics in lustre, tasmin rāmē in that Rama, katham how, pāpam harm, āśaṅsasē wish.

How do you, O Devi, wish to harm Rama who is endowed with uprightness, who resembles the gods and in lustre to great ascetics?
na smarāmyapriyaṅ vākyaṅ lōkasya priyavādinaḥ.

sa kathaṅ tvatkṛtē rāmaṅ vakṣyāmi priyamapriyam৷৷2.12.32৷৷


lōkasya in this world, priyavādinaḥ one who speaks pleasing words, apriyam unpleasant, vākyam words, na smarāmi I do not recollect, saḥ such a person, priyam beloved, rāmam to Rama, tvatkṛtē for your sake, apriyam unpleasant, katham how, vakṣyāmi can I tell?

How can I, for your sake, speak harsh to my beloved Rama who uses pleasing words to the people of the world, and never an unpleasant word which I can recall?
kṣamā yasmindamastyāga satyaṅ dharmaḥ kṛtajñatā.

apyahiṅsā ca bhūtānāṅ tamṛtē kā gatirmama৷৷2.12.33৷৷


yasmin in whom, kṣamā forgiveness, damaḥ forbearance, tyāgaḥ renunciation, satyam truthfulness, dharmaḥ righteousness, kṛtajñatā gratefulness, api ca and also, bhūtānām for all living beings, ahiṅsā non-violence, tam ṛtē without him (Rama), mama to me, kā gatiḥ where is the refuge?

Where is the refuge for me without him in whom dwell forgiveness, forbearance, renunciation, truthfulness, righteousness, gratefulness and also non-violence towards all living beings?
mama vṛddhasya kaikēyi gatāntasya tapasvinaḥ!.

dīnaṅ lālapyamānasya kāruṇyaṅ kartumarhasi৷৷2.12.34৷৷


kaikēyi O Kaikeyi, vṛddhasya of the aged, gatāntasya on the verge of death, tapasvinaḥ wretched, dīnam pitifully, lālapyamānasya wailing, mama to me, kāruṇyam mercy, kartum to show, arhasi behoves you.

O Kaikeyi, you should show mercy to this wretched, old man on the verge of death, wailing pitifully.
pṛthivyāṅ sāgarāntāyāṅ yatkiñcidadhigamyatē.

tatsarvaṅ tava dāsyāmi mā ca tvāṅ manyurāviśēt৷৷2.12.35৷৷


sāgarāntāyam bounded by ocean, pṛthivyām on this earth, yatkiñcit whatever, adhigamyatē can be secured, tat sarvam all that, tava to you, dāsyāmi shall give tvām you, manyuḥ anger, mā āviśēt do not possess.

I shall give you all that can be secured on this earth bounded by the ocean. Show no anger.
añjaliṅ karōmi kaikēyi! pādau cāpi spṛśāmi tē.

śaraṇaṅ bhava rāmasya mā.dharmō māmiha spṛśēt৷৷2.12.36৷৷


kaikēyi! O Kaikeyi, añjaliṅ karōmi I bow to you with folded palms, tē your, pādau feet, spṛśāmi cāpi I touch too, rāmasya for Rama, śaraṇam bhava be the saviour, mām me, adharmaḥ sin, iha in this matter, mā spṛśēt may not touch.

O Kaikeyi! I bow to you with folded palms. I touch your feet, too. Be the saviour of Rama. Let no sin taint me here (in this life).
iti duḥkhābhisantaptaṅ vilapantamacētanam.

ghūrṇamānaṅ mahārājaṅ śōkēna samabhiplutam৷৷2.12.37৷৷

pāraṅ śōkārṇavasyāśu prārthayantaṅ punaḥ punaḥ.

pratyuvācātha kaikēyī raudrā raudrataraṅ vacaḥ৷৷2.12.38৷৷


atha after that, raudrā cruel-natured, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, iti in this way, duḥkhābhisantaptam
tormented with grief, vilapantam lamenting, acētanam unconscions, ghūrṇamānam (head) reeling, śōkēna with pain, samabhiplutam overwhelmed, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, śōkārṇavasya of the ocean of sorrow, pāram to the other side, āśu quickly, prārthayantam beseeching, rājānam to the king, raudrataram more fierce, vacaḥ words, pratyuvāca replied.

Then the fierce Kaikeyi used fiercer words in reply to the king who was tormented with grief and filled with tears, senses switched off, head reeling, overwhelmed with pain, beseeching again and again to ferry him across the ocean of sorrow as quickly as possible:
yadi dattvā varau rājanpunaḥ pratyanutapyasē.

dhārmikatvaṅ kathaṅ vīra! pṛthivyāṅ kathayiṣyasi৷৷2.12.39৷৷


rājan O king, varau boons, datvā having given, pratyanutapyasē yadi if you are repenting like this, vīra! valiant, pṛthivyām on this earth, dhārmikatvam righteousness, katham how, kathayiṣyasi will you
speak?

O valiant king, if you repent like this after having given two boons, how will you talk about your righteousness on this earth?
yadā samētā bahavastvayā rājarṣaya ssaha.

kathayiṣyanti dharmajña! tatra kiṅ prativakṣyasi৷৷2.12.40৷৷


dharmajña O knower of righteousness, tvayā by you, samētāḥ assemble together, bahavaḥ innumerable, rājarṣayaḥ rajarshis, yadā when, kathayiṣyanti they speak for, tatra then, kim what, prativakṣyasi what will you answer?

O knower of righteousness! when innumerable rajarshis assemble and ask you on this what answer will you give?
yasyāḥ prasādē jīvāmi yā ca māmabhyapālayat.

tasyāḥ kṛtam mayā mithyā kaikēyyā iti vakṣayasi৷৷2.12.41৷৷


yasyāḥ of whose, prasādē mercy, jīvāmi I am alive, yā such, mām me, abhyapālayat protected, tasyāḥ such, kaikēyyāḥ Kaikeyi's, mayā by me, mithyākṛtam broken the promise, iti like this, vakṣyasi will you tell?

Will you say, 'To such a Kaikeyi by whose mercy I am alive and by whom I was protected, I have broken the promise given'?
kilbiṣatvaṅ narēndrāṇāṅ kariṣyasi narādhipa!.

yō datvā varamadyaiva punaranyāni bhāṣasē৷৷2.12.42৷৷


narādhipa! O king, yaḥ such you are, adyaiva right now, varam a boon, datvā having given, punaḥ again, anyāni other than those words, bhāṣasē are speaking, tvam you, narēndrāṇām for kings, kilbiṣatvam blemish, kariṣyasi you are bringing.

O king, right now having given two boons, you are speaking otherwise. You are bringing blemish to kings (of the Ikshwaku race)
śaibyaśśyēnakapōtīyē svamāṅsaṅ pakṣiṇē dadau.

alarkaścakṣuṣī datvā jagāma gatimuttamām৷৷2.12.43৷৷


śyēnakapōtīyē in the conflict between a hawk and a pigeon, śaibyaḥ king Saibya, pakṣiṇē to the hawk, svamāṅsam his own flesh, dadau gave, alarkaḥ king Alarka, cakṣuṣī eyes, datvā having given, uttamāṅ gatim highest state, jagāma attained.

(King) Saibya gave his own flesh to the hawk in the conflict between the hawk and the pigeon. (King) Alarka gave his eyes (to a blind man) and attained the highest state.
sāgarassamayaṅ kṛtvā na vēlāmativartatē.

samayaṅ mā.nṛtaṅ kārṣīḥ pūrvavṛttamanusmaran৷৷2.12.44৷৷


sāgaraḥ ocean, samayam vow, kṛtvā having made, vēlām the shore, ativartatē does not cross, pūrvavṛttam history of the earlier kings, anusmaran recollecting, samayam the vow, anṛtam false, mā kārṣīḥ do not make.

Having made the vow (to the gods), the ocean does not advance beyond the shore. Recollect the history of the earlier kings and do not make the vow false.
sa tvaṅ dharmaṅ parityajya rāmaṅ rājyē.bhiṣicya ca.

saha kausalyayā nityaṅ rantumicchasi durmatē!৷৷2.12.45৷৷


durmatē O wicked-minded one, saḥ tvam you are such, dharmam righteousness, parityajya deserting, rāmam of Rama, rājyē in the kingdom, abhiṣicya ca having installed, kausalyayā saha along with Kausalya, nityam always, rantum to enjoy, icchasi are you desiring.

O wicked-minded one, deserting righteousness and installing Rama in the kingdom,
you want to enjoy life with Kausalya everafter?
bhavatvadharmō dharmō vā satyaṅ vā yadi vā.nṛtam.

yattvayā saṅśrutaṅ mahyaṅ tasya nāsti vyatikramaḥ৷৷2.12.46৷৷


adharmaḥ unrighteousness, dharmō vā or righteousness, satyaṅ vā or true, yadi vā or, anṛtam false, bhavatu let it be so, tvayā by you, mahyam for me, yat whatever, saṅśrutam was promised, tasya for that, vyatikramaḥ deviation, nāsti is not there.

Whether righteous or unrighteous, true or false, there is no deviation from what you have promised to me.
ahaṅ hi viṣamadyaiva pītvā bahu tavāgrataḥ.

paśyatastē mariṣyāmi rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē৷৷2.12.47৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, abhiṣicyatē yadi if installed (as prince-regent), aham I, adyaiva today itself, tava your, agrataḥ presence, bahu excessive, viṣam poison, pītvā drinking, tē paśyataḥ even as you
are watching, mariṣyāmi hi will indeed die.

If Rama is coronated I will die while as you are watching right in your presence today itself by drinking excessive poison.
ēkāhamapi paśyēyaṅ yadyahaṅ rāmamātaram.

añjaliṅ pratigṛhṇantīṅ śrēyō nanu mṛtirmama৷৷2.12.48৷৷


aham I, ēkāhamapi even for a day, rāma mātaram Rama's mother, añjalim homage, prati gṛhṇantīm receving, paśyēyaṅ yadi if I were to see, mama my, mṛtiḥ death, śrēyaḥ nanu is preferable to me.

If I were to see Rama's mother receiving homage from everybody even for a day, I shall prefer my death.
bharatēnātmanā cāhaṅ śapē tē manujādhipa!.

yathā nānyēna tuṣyēyamṛtē rāmavivāsanāt৷৷2.12.49৷৷


manujādhipa O chief of men, bharatēna by Bharata, ātmanā ca on my own life, tē to you, śapē I swear, yathā that, rāmanivāsanāt ṛtē except banishment of Rama (to forest), anyēna by any other (means), na tuṣyēyam I will not be satisfied.

O king, I swear on Bharata and on my own life that nothing less than Rama's banishment will satisfy me.
ētāvaduktvā vacanaṅ kaikēyī virarāma ha.

vilapantaṅ ca rājānaṅ na prativyājahāra sā৷৷2.12.50৷৷


kaikēyī Kaikeyi, ētāvat to this extent, vacanam words, uktvā having spoken, virarāma ha remained silent, vilapantam lamenting, rājānam to the king, sā she, na prativyājahāra did not speak in reply.

Kaikeyi, having spoken to this extent remained silent. She heeded not the lament of
the king.
śrutvā tu rājā kaikēyyā vṛtaṅ paramaśōbhanam.

rāmasya ca vanē vāsamaiśvaryaṅ bharatasya ca৷৷2.12.51৷৷

nābhyabhāṣata kaikēyīṅ muhūrtaṅ vyākulēndriyaḥ.


rājā tu as regards the king, kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, vṛtam asked for, param very, aśōbhanam inauspicious, rāmasya Rama's, vanē vāsam exile to the forest, bharatasya Bharata's, aiśvaryaṅ ca wealth (enthronement), śrutvā having heard, muhūrtam for a moment, vyākulēndriya: with agitated senses, kaikēyīm to Kaikeyi, nābhyabhāṣata did not speak.

Having heard of the highly unfair demands by Kaikeyi for Rama's exile to the forest and Bharata's prosperity (enthronement), the king was dumbstruck for a while with his senses agitated. He did not speak to Kaikeyi.
praikṣatānimiṣō dēvīṅ priyāmapriyavādinīm৷৷2.12.52৷৷

tāṅ hi vajrasamāṅ vācamākarṇya hṛdayāpriyām.

duḥkhaśōkamayīṅ ghōrāṅ rājā na sukhitō.bhavat৷৷2.12.53৷৷


apriyavādinīm to one who speaks unpleasant words, priyām to the beloved, dēvīm to the queen, animiṣaḥ unblinking eyes, praikṣata gazed, vajrasamām resembling a thunderbolt, hṛdayāpriyām unpleasant to the heart, duḥkhaśōkamayīm filled with grief and anguish, ghōrām dreadful, tāṅ vācam those words, ākarṇya having listened, rājā king, sukhitaḥ happy, na abhūt did not become.

The unhappy king intently fixed his gaze at his beloved queen speaking unpleasant words charged with grief and anguish, unpleasant to the heart like the dreadful thunderbolt.
sa dēvyā vyavasāyaṅ ca ghōraṅ ca śapathaṅ kṛtam.

dhyātvā rāmēti niśśvasya chinna starurivāpatat৷৷2.12.54৷৷


saḥ he, dēvyāḥ the queen's, vyavasāyaṅ ca determination, kṛtam having made, ghōram dreadful, śapathaṅ ca vow, dhyātvā reflecting, niśśvasya sighing, rāma iti crying 'Rama', chinnaḥ severed, taruriva like a tree, apatat fell down.

Reflecting on the determination of the queen and her dreadful vow, the king sighed and cried, 'O Rama' and then fell down like a tree severed.
naṣṭacittō yathōnmattō viparītō yathā.turaḥ.

hṛtatējā yathā sarpō babhūva jagatīpatiḥ৷৷2.12.55৷৷


jagatīpatiḥ lord of the earth, naṣṭacittaḥ the mind deranged, unmattaḥ yathā like a madman, viparītaḥ behaving in a contrary manner, āturaḥ yathā like a sick person, hṛtatējāḥ with its taken away (by mantra), sarpaḥ yathā like a serpent, babhūva became.

The lord of the earth (Dasaratha) became like a man with the mind deranged, like a sick man behaving to the contrary, like a serpent with its energy drained (through mantra).
dīnayā tu girā rājā iti hōvāca kaikayīm.

anarthamimamarthābhaṅ kēna tvamupadarśitā৷৷2.12.56৷৷

bhūtōpahatacittēva bruvantī māṅ na lajjasē.


rājā king, dīnayā humble, girā words, kaikayīm to Kaikeyi, iti thus, uvāca ha spoke, arthābham appearing beneficial to you, anartham such calamitous act, kēna for what, tvam you, upadarśitā exhibited?, bhūtōpahatacittēva faculties possessed by evil spirit, mām me, bruvantī while speaking, na lajjasē (you) do not feel ashamed.

The king addressed Kaikeyi in humble words saying, Why did you exhibit this unfortunate act apparently beneficial to you? You are not ashamed of saying this like one whose faculties are possessed by an evil spirit.
śīlavyasanamētattē nābhijānāmyahaṅ purā৷৷2.12.57৷৷

bālāyāstattvitidānīṅ tē lakṣayē viparītavat.


purā earlier, bālāyāḥ when you were young, tē your, ētat this, śīlavyasanam perverse behaviour, aham I, nābhijānāmi did not know, tu but, idānīm now, tē your, tat about that, lakṣayē perceiving, viparītavat reverse of it.

I never knew earlier when you were young that you possessed such perverse behaviour. But now I perceive the reverse (of what I knew).
kutō vā tē bhayaṅ jātaṅ yā tvamēvaṅvidhaṅ varam৷৷2.12.58৷৷

rāṣṭrē bharatamāsīnaṅ vṛṇīṣē rāghavaṅ vanē.


tē to you, kutaḥ vā from where, bhayam fear, jātam was born, yā you, bharatam to Bharata, rāṣṭrē in the kingdom, āsīnam seated, rāghavam to Rama, vanē in the forest, ēvaṅ vidham this type of, varam a boon, vṛṇīṣē you are asking for.

You are asking for a boon that Bharata should be enthroned in the kingdom while Rama should live in the forest. From where did you get this apprehension?
viramaitēna bhāvēna tvamētēnānṛtēna vā৷৷2.12.59৷৷

yadi bhartuḥ priyaṅ kāryaṅ lōkasya bharatasya ca.


bhartuḥ of your husband, lōkasya of this world, bharatasya ca of Bharata also, priyam beneficence, kāryaṅ yadi if you wish to do, ētēna bhāvēna with this thought (that Bharata should become king), anṛtēna with falsehood, ētēna vā or with such thought of exiling Rama, tvam you, virama refrain.

If you wish to do good to your husband, to the world and also to Bharata, refrain from this illusory thought.
nṛśaṅsē! pāpasaṅkalpē! kṣudrē! duṣkṛtakāriṇi!৷৷2.12.60৷৷

kinnu dukhamalīkaṅ vā mayi rāmē ca paśyasi.


nṛśaṅsē! O cruel one, pāpasaṅkalpē O (woman) of sinful resolve, kṣudrē! O vile (creature), duṣkṛtakāriṇi O woman of evil deeds, mayi in me, rāmē ca also in Rama, kiṅ nu what, duḥkham wrong, alīkaṅ vā or sin, paśyasi see?

O cruel one, O woman of sinful resolve, O vile (creature), O woman of evil deeds!, what wrong or sin do you really see in Rama or in me.
na kathañcidṛtē rāmādbharatō rājyamāvasēt৷৷2.12.61৷৷

rāmādapi hi taṅ manyē dharmatō balavattaram.


rāmādṛtē depriving Rama, bharataḥ Bharata, kathañcit by whatever means, rājyam kingdom, na
āvasēt will not occupy, hi because, tam him, rāmādapi more than Rama, dharmataḥ righteously, balavattaram stronger, manyē I consider.

Depriving Rama, Bharata in no way will occupy the kingdom because in the matter of righteousness I think he is superior even to Rama.
kathaṅ drakṣyāmi rāmasya vanaṅ gacchēti bhāṣitē৷৷2.12.62৷৷

mukhavarṇaṅ vivarṇaṅ tu taṅ yathaivēndumupaplutam.


vanaṅ gaccha go to the forest, iti like that, bhāṣitē on saying, upaplutam eclipsed, induṅ yathā like moon, vivarṇam pale, rāmasya Rama's, mukham face, katham how, drakṣyāmi shall I see.

While instructing Rama to go to the forest, how can I look at his face, pale like the eclipsed moon?
tāṅ hi mē sukṛtāṅ buddhiṅ suhṛdbhissaha niścitām৷৷2.12.63৷৷

kathaṅ drakṣyāmyapāvṛttāṅ parairiva hatāṅ camūm.

kiṅ māṅ vakṣyanti rājānō nānādigbhya ssamāgatāḥ৷৷2.12.64৷৷

bālō batā.yamaikṣvākaściraṅ rājyamakārayat.


sukṛtām well thought-out, suhṛdbhi: saha in consultation with friends, niścitām has been decided, mē I, tāṅ buddhim that decision, paraiḥ by enemies, hatām defeated, camūmiva like the army, apāvṛttām retreating, katham how, drakṣyāmi can I see, nānādigbhyaḥ from different directions, samāgatāḥ men assembled, rājānaḥ all kings, mām about me, kim what, vakṣyanti they will speak of, bālaḥ ignorant one, ayam aikṣvākaḥ this Dasaratha, ciram for a long time, rājyam kingdom, akārayat ruled.

I have taken this decision in consultation with friends to install Rama. How can I see such a decision being reversed like a retreating army defeated by enemies? Kings from different quarters have already arrived and they will say, How did this ignorant descendant of the Ikshakus (Dasaratha) rule this kingdom for such a long time?
yadā tu bahavō vṛddhā guṇavantō bahuśrutāḥ৷৷2.12.65৷৷

pariprakṣyanti kākutsthaṅ vakṣyāmi kimahaṅ tadā.


guṇavantaḥ virtuous men, bahuśrutāḥ well-learned, bahavaḥ vṛddhāḥ many elders, kākutstham about this scion of the Kakutstha race (Rama), yadā when, pariprakṣyanti when they question (me), tadā then, aham I, kiṅ vakṣyāmi what shall I tell (them)?

When several virtuous and learned elders ask me about Rama, what shall I tell them?
kaikēyyā kliśyamānēna rāmaḥ pravrājitō mayā৷৷2.12.66৷৷

yadi satyaṅ bravīmyētattadasatyaṅ bhaviṣyati.


kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, kliśyamānēna by being tortured, mayā by me, rāmaḥ Rama, vanam to the forest, pravrājitaḥ was sent, ētat this, satyam truth, bravīmi yadi if I tell, tat that, asatyam untruth, bhaviṣyati will become.

If I tell the truth 'Tortured by Kaikeyi, I have sent Rama to the forest', none will believe it and they will consider it untruth.
kiṅ māṅ vakṣyati kauśalyā rāghavē vanamāsthitē৷৷2.12.67৷৷

kiṅ caināṅ prativakṣyāmi kṛtvā vipriyamīdṛśam.


rāghavē Rama, vanam to the forest, āsthitē takes refuge, kauśalyā Kausalya, mām about me, kiṅ vakṣyati what will she say, īdṛśam such, vi(a)priyam unpleasant act, kṛtvā ca having done, ēnām to her, kim what, prativakṣyāmi reply can I give.

If Rama takes refuge in the forest, what will Kausalya say to me? Having committed such an unpleasant act, what reply can I give her?
yadā yadā hi kauśalyā dāsīvacca sakhīva ca৷৷2.12.68৷৷

bhāryāvadbhaginīvacca mātṛvaccōpatiṣṭhati.

satataṅ priyakāmā mē priyaputrā priyaṅvadā৷৷2.12.69৷৷

na mayā satkṛtā dēvī satkārārhā kṛtē tava.


dēvi O Kaikeyi, satatam always, mē priyakāmā cherishing my welfare, priyaputrā giving birth to a beloved son, priyaṅvadā sweet-spoken, kauśalyā Kausalya, yadā yadā hi whenever, dāsīvacca like an attendant, sakhī vacca like a friend, bhāryāvat like a wife, bhaginī vacca like a sister, mātṛvacca like a mother, upatiṣṭhati served, satkārārhā fit to receive courteous treatment, tava kṛtē because of you, mayā by me, na satkṛtā never received attention.

Sweet-spoken Kausalya who always cherishes my welfare. who has given me my beloved son, who has served me like an attendant, a friend, a wife, a sister and a mother deserved courteous treatment from me, but because of you, she never received due attention from me.
idānīṅ tattapati māṅ yanmayā sukṛtaṅ tvayi৷৷2.12.70৷৷

apathyavyañjanōpētaṅ bhuktamannamivāturam.


mayā by me, tvayi in you, sukṛtaṅ what favour has been done, tat that one, apathyavyañjanōpētam mixed with unwholesome curry, bhuktam eaten, annam rice, āturamiva like a sick person, idānīm now, mām me, tapati is burning me.

I have done many favours to you. Like a sick person afflicted by eating rice mixed with unwholesome curry, those acts of kindness are burning me now.
viprakāraṅ ca rāmasya samprayāṇaṅ vanasya ca৷৷2.12.71৷৷

sumitrā prēkṣya vai bhītā kathaṅ mē viśvasiṣyati.


rāmasya Rama's, viprakāram insult, vanasya to the forest, samprayāṇaṅ ca journey, prēkṣya on seeing, bhītā frightened, sumitrā Sumitra, katham how, mē in me, viśvasiṣyati will have confidence.

In seeing the insult meted out to Rama and his journey to the forest, how will frightened Sumitra have confidence in me?
kṛpaṇaṅ bata vaidēhī śrōṣyati dvayamapriyam৷৷2.12.72৷৷

māṅ ca pañcatvamāpannaṅ rāmaṅ ca vanamāśritam.


vaidēhī Sita, mām my, pañcatvam āpannam having been dead, rāmam of Rama, vanam āśritam taking refuge in the forest, apriyam unpleasant, dvayam two events, kṛpaṇam in a pitiable state, śrōṣyati will listen, bata alas.

Alas! Sita will listen in a pitiable state the two unpleasant events namely my death and Rama's exile to the foest.
vaidēhī bata mē prāṇānśōcantī kṣapayiṣyati৷৷2.12.73৷৷

hīnā himavataḥ pārśvē kinnarēṇēva kinnarī.


himavataḥ pārśvē on the Himalayan slopes, kinnarēṇa with Kinnera, hīnā forsaken by, kinnarīva like
a Kinneri, śōcantī lamenting, vaidēhī Vaidehi, mē prāṇān my life, kṣapayiṣyati will throw away, bata what a pity!

What a pity! Vaidehi, lamenting like a Kinnari forsaken by a Kinnara on the Himalayan slopes, will cause death to me.
na hi rāmamahaṅ dṛṣṭvā pravasantaṅ mahāvanē৷৷2.12.74৷৷

ciraṅ jīvitumāśaṅsē rudantīṅ cāpi maithilīm.


aham I, mahāvanē in that wilderness, pravasantam living, rāmam to Rama, rudatīm crying, maithilīṅ ca and Sita, dṛṣṭvā having seen, ciram for a long time, jīvitum to survive, na āśaṅsē hi indeed do not hope.

With Rama living in the wilderness and Sita crying, I do not hope to survive for long, indeed.
sā nūnaṅ vidhavā rājyaṅ saputrā kārayiṣyasi৷৷2.12.75৷৷

na hi pravrājitē rāmē dēvi! jīvitumutsahē.


sā such you are, vidhavā as a widow, saputrā with your son, nūnam certainly, rājyaṅ kārayiṣyasi will rule the kingdom, dēvi O Devi! rāmē pravrājitē after Rama is exiled, jīvitum to live, na utsahē hi do not desire.

O Devi! you will certainly rule the kingdom as a widow along with your son. (But) I do not wish to live after Rama is exiled.
satīṅ tvāmahamatyantaṅ vyavasyāmyasatīṅ satīm.

rūpiṇīṅ viṣasaṅyuktāṅ pītvēva madirāṅ naraḥ৷৷2.12.76৷৷


rūpiṇīm beautiful, atyantam extremely, asatīṅ satīm being an unchaste woman, tvām you, naraḥ people, viṣasaṅyuktām mixed with poison, madirām wine, pītvēva having partaken, satīm like a chaste woman, vyavasyāmi I have a sure belief.

Like people regarding wine mixed with poison as fine before drinking it, I had a firm belief that you were a chaste woman, but while you who look extremely beautiful you are actually not so.
anṛtairbahu māṅ sāntvai ssāntvayantī sma bhāṣasē.

gītaśabdēna saṅrudhya lubdhō mṛgamivāvadhīḥ৷৷2.12.77৷৷


anṛtaiḥ untrue, sāntvai: with pleasing words, mām me, bahu greatly, sāntvayantī while you are appeasing, bhāṣasē sma used to speak, lubdhaḥ hunter, gītaśabdēna sound of music, saṅrudhya having trapped, mṛgam iva like a deer, avadhīḥ killed (me).

You used to console me with so many words pleasing but untrue and you killed me like a hunter getting the deer trapped and slaughtered through the melody of music.
anārya iti māmāryāḥ putravikrāyakaṅ dhruvam.

dhikkariṣyanti rathyāsu surāpaṅ brāhmaṇaṅ yathā৷৷2.12.78৷৷


āryāḥ respectable people, putravikrāyikam a seller of one's own son, mām me, surāpam a consumer of liquor, brāhmaṇaṅ yathā like a brahmin, anārya iti as a mean person, rathyāsu on the highway, dhruvam certainly, dhikkariṣyanti will censure me.

Respectable people on the highway will certainly say 'He sold away his son' and censure me as a mean person like a brahmin consuming liquor.
ahō! duḥkhamahō! kṛcchraṅ yatra vācaḥ kṣamē tava.

duḥkhamēvaṅvidhaṅ prāptaṅ purākṛtamivāśubham৷৷2.12.79৷৷


ahō duḥkham what a great sorrow, ahō kṛcchram what a great calamity, yatra where, tava your, vācaḥ words, kṣamē endure, purākṛtam formerly committed, aśubham iva like sin, ēvaṅ vidham in this way, duḥkham sorrow, prāptam has befallen.

What suffering! What a calamity! that I am made to put up with your words. I am subject to this suffering may be as expiation for the sin formerly committed.
ciraṅ khalu mayā pāpē tvaṅ pāpēnābhirakṣitā.

ajñānādupasampannā rajjurudbandhinī yathā৷৷2.12.80৷৷


pāpē O wretch! pāpēna in my folly, mayā by me, ajñānāt through ignorance, ciram for a long time, abhirakṣitā protected, tvam you, udbandhinī serving for hanging, rajju: yathā like rope upasampannā arrived.

O wretch! I protected you in my folly for a long time through ignorance, like a rope preserved which turned out to be a noose to hang me with.
ramamāṇastvayā sārdhaṅ mṛtyuṅ tvāṅ nābhilakṣayē.

bālō rahasi hastēna kṛṣṇasarpamivāspṛśam৷৷2.12.81৷৷


tvayā sārdham together with you, ramamāṇaḥ while sporting, tvām you, mṛtyum as death, nābhilakṣayē did not mark, bālaḥ like a child, rahasi in a solitary place, hastēna with hand, kṛṣṇasarpamiva like a black cobra, aspṛśam touched.

While sporting with you, I did not realize you were death incarnate. Like a child handling a black cobra I caressed you.
mayā hyapitṛkaḥ putra ssamahātmā durātmanā.

taṅ tu māṅ jīvalōkō.yaṅ nūnamākrōṣṭumarhati৷৷2.12.82৷৷


mahātmā magnanimous, saḥ that Rama, durātmanā by the wicked-minded, mayā by me, apitṛkaḥ without father, tam such, mām me, ayam this, jīvalōkaḥ world of living beings, nūnam certainly, akrōṣṭhum to condemn, arhati is entitled.

Wicked I am, I have made that magnanimous Rama fatherless. This world of living beings is certainly entitled to condemn me.
bāliśō bata kāmātmā rājā daśarathō bhṛśam.

yaḥ strīkṛtē priyaṅ putraṅ vanaṅ prasthāpayiṣyati৷৷2.12.83৷৷


yaḥ Dasaratha, strīkṛtē for the sake of a woman, priyam dear, putram son, vanaṅ prasthāpayiṣyati sending to the forests, kāmātmā lustful, rājā daśarathaḥ king Dasaratha, bhṛśam greatly, bāliśaḥ foolish one, bata alas.

(They will say), 'Alas! how utterly foolish and lustful is king Dasaratha who is sending his beloved son to the forest for the sake of a woman'.
vrataiśca brahmacaryaiśca gurubhiścōpakarśitaḥ.

bhōgakālē mahatkṛcchraṅ punarēva prapatsyatē৷৷2.12.84৷৷


vrataiḥ ca due to observing vows, brahmacaryaiśca by observance of vows of celibacy, gurubhiśca by preceptors, upakarśitaḥ emaciated, bhōgakālē at the time of enjoying pleasures, punaḥ ēva again now, mahat great, kṛcchram hardship, prapatsyatē is going to undergo.

'(Rama) already emaciated by observing vows related to ritual and celibacy in compliance with the orders of the preceptors has to undergo hardships again at a time when he should enjoy pleasures (of life)'.
nālaṅ dvitīyaṅ vacanaṅ putrō māṅ pratibhāṣitum.

sa vanaṅ pravrajētyuktō bāḍhamityēva vakṣyati৷৷2.12.85৷৷


putraḥ (my) son, māṅ prati about me, dvitīyam second, vacanam word, bhāṣitum to say, nālam is not able, vanaṅ vraja go to the forest, iti in this way, uktaḥ if told, saḥ he, bāḍham ityēva Certainly so, vakṣyati will say.

My son Rama will not say a second word to me, if I tell him 'Go to the forest'.He will say, 'Certainly so'.
yadi mē rāghavaḥ kuryādvanaṅ gacchēti cōditaḥ.

pratikūlaṅ priyaṅ mē syānna tu vatsaḥ kariṣyati৷৷2.12.86৷৷


rāghavaḥ descendant of the Raghus (Rama), vanaṅ to the forest, gaccha go, iti like that, cōditaḥ urged, mē to me, pratikūlaṅ contrary, kuryāt yadi if he does, tat that, mē for me, priyaṅ syāt will be welcome, vatsaḥ tu but my son, na kariṣyati will not do.

If this scion of the Raghu race (Rama) urged to go to the forest acts against my order, it will be welcome but my son will not do it.
śuddhabhāvō hi bhāvaṅ mē na tu jñāsyati rāghavaḥ৷৷2.12.87৷৷

sa vanaṅ prabrajē tyuktō bāḍha mityēva vakṣayati.


śuddhabhāvaḥ pure in thought, rāghavaḥ descendant of the Raghus (Rama), mē my, bhāvaṅ tu intention, na jñāsyati hi will not know, saḥ he, vanaṅ to the forest, pravraja go into exile, iti thus, uktaḥ said by me, bāḍham iti ēva certainly so, vakṣyati he will say.

The descendant of the Raghus (Rama) who is pure in thought will not come to know my intention. Therefore if I tell him 'Go to the forest,' he will say, 'Certainly so'.
rāghavē hi vanaṅ prāptē sarvalōkasya dhikkṛtam৷৷2.12.88৷৷

mṛtyurakṣamaṇīyaṅ māṅ nayiṣyati yamakṣayam.


rāghavē the scion of the Raghu dynasty (Rama), vanaṅ prāptē reaches the forest, sarvalōkasya for the entire world, dhikkṛtam contemptible, akṣamaṇīyam unpardonable, mām me, mṛtyuḥ death, yamakṣayam to the abode of death, nayiṣyati will conduct.

If Rama goes to the forest, the god of death will conduct me to his abode, for condemned by the entire world, I shall not be forgiven (even by Yama).
mṛtē mayi gatē rāmē vanaṅ manujapuṅgavē৷৷2.12.89৷৷

iṣṭē mama janē śēṣē kiṅ pāpaṅ pratipatsyasē.


manujapuṅgavē eminent among men, rāmē Rama, vanaṅ gatē after he has gone to the forest, mayi when I, mṛtē having been dead, śēṣē the remaining, mama iṣṭē janē when my well-wishers, kim what, pāpam harmful acts, pratipatsyasē you are thinking of.

With me dead and Rama, the best among men, banished, what harmful acts are you contemplating against my well-wishers?
kauśalyā māṅ ca rāmaṅ ca putrau ca yadi hāsyati৷৷2.12.90৷৷

duḥkhānyasahatī dēvī māmēvānumariṣyati.


dēvī kauśalyā queen Kausalya, māṅ ca me also, rāmaṅ ca Rama also, putrau ca sons Lakshmana
and Satrughna, hāsyati yadi if she loses, duḥkhāni grief, asahatī unable to bear, māmēva me
only, anumariṣyati will, following me, die.

If queen Kausalya loses me, Rama, Lakshmana and Satrughna will follow me into death, unable to bear the grief.
kausalyāṅ ca sumitrāṅ ca māṅ ca putraistribhissaha৷৷2.12.91৷৷

prakṣipya narakē sā tvaṅ kaikēyi! sukhitā bhava.


kaikēyi O Kaikeyi, kauśalyāṅ ca Kausalya, sumitrāṅ ca Sumitra, tribhiḥ three, putraiḥ saha along with sons, māṅ ca with me, narakē into hell, prakṣipya having thrown, sā tvam such you are, sukhitā bhava be happy.

O Kaikeyi! consign Kausalya, Sumitra, me and my three sons into hell and be happy.
mayā rāmēṇa ca tyaktaṅ śāśvataṅ satkṛtaṅ guṇaiḥ৷৷2.12.92৷৷

ikṣvākukulamakṣōbhyamākulaṅ pālayiṣyasi.


mayā by me, rāmēṇa ca by Rama, tyaktam abandoned, śāśvatam divine, guṇaiḥ with virtues, satkṛtam worshipped, akṣōbhyam undisturbed, ikṣvākukulam Ikshvaku race, ākulam afflicted with grief, pālayiṣyasi will rule.

You will rule undisturbed the Ikshvaku race honoured for its divine virtues. Now abandoned by me and Rama it will be afflicted with grief.
priyaṅ cēdbharatasyaitadrāmapravrājanaṅ bhavēt৷৷2.12.93৷৷

mā sma mē bharataḥ kārṣītprētakṛtyaṅ gatāyuṣaḥ.


tat this, rāmapravrājanam Rama's exile, bharatasya Bharata's, priyaṅ bhavēt cēt if it is to his liking, gatāyuṣaḥ after cessation of my life, mē to me, bharataḥ Bharata, prētakṛtyam funeral rites, mā sma kārṣīt let him not perform.

If Rama's exile is approved by Bharata, then let him not perform my funeral rites after my death.
hantānāryē! mamāmitrē! sakāmā bhava kaikayi৷৷2.12.94৷৷

mṛtē mayi gatē rāmē vanaṅ puruṣapuṅgavē.

sēdānīṅ vidhavā rājyaṅ saputrā kārayiṣyasi৷৷2.12.95৷৷


hanta What a calamity, mama amitrē O enemy of mine! anāryē O wicked one! kaikayi Kaikeyi, sakāmā with desires fulfilled, bhava become, puruṣapuṅgavē foremost of men, rāmē Rama, vanaṅgatē after he leaves for the forest, mayi when I, mṛtē am dead, vidhavā a widow, saputrā with your son, sā such as you, idānīm now, rājyaṅ kārayiṣyasi you will rule the kingdom.

O my enemy, O wicked Kaikeyi, after Rama, the foremost of men, has left for the forest your desires will be fulfilled. And after my death, you as a widow along with your son will rule the kingdom.
tvaṅ rājaputrīvādēna nyavasō mama vēśmani.

akīrtiścātulā lōkē dhruvaḥ paribhavaśca mē৷৷2.12.96৷৷

sarvabhūtēṣu cāvajñā yathā pāpakṛtastathā.


tvam you, rājaputrīvādēna in the name of a princess, mama vēśmani in my palace, nyavasaḥ you lived, mē to me, lōkē in the world, atulā unparalleled, akīrtiḥ dishonour, paribhavaśca disgrace, dhruvaḥ certainty, pāpakṛtaḥ one who has committed sinful acts, yathā as, tathā so, sarvabhūtēṣu in all living beings, avajñā contempt.

You lived in my palace under the name of a princess. You have brought me, for sure, unparalleled dishonour and disgrace. Everybody will look upon me with contempt as if I have committed a sinful act.
kathaṅ rathairvibhuryātvā gajāśvaiśca muhurmuhuḥ৷৷2.12.97৷৷

padbhyāṅ rāmō mahāraṇyē vatsō mē vicariṣyati.


mē vatsaḥ my son, rāmaḥ Rama, muhurmuhuḥ often, vibhuḥ as prince, rathaiḥ on chariots, gajāśvaiḥ ca on elephants and horses, yātvā riding, mahāraṇyē in the wilderness, padbhyām on foot, katham how, vicariṣyati will roam.

How will my son, Rama, who used to ride on chariots, elephants and horses roam the wilderness barefoot?
yasya tvāhārasamayē sūdāḥ kuṇḍaladhāriṇaḥ৷৷2.12.98৷৷

ahaṅpūrvāḥ pacanti sma praśastaṅ pānabhōjanam.

sa kathannu kaṣāyāṇi tiktāni kaṭukāni ca৷৷2.12.99৷৷

bhakṣayanvanyamāhāraṅ sutō mē vartayiṣyati.


yasya whose, āhārasamayē at the time of taking food, kuṇḍaladhāriṇaḥ wearing ear-rings, sūdāḥ cooks, ahaṅpūrvāḥ proudly, praśastam enough, pānabhōjanam food and beverages, pacanti sma used to
prepare, saḥ he, mē sutaḥ my son, kaṣāyāṇi astringent, tiktāni pungent, kaṭukāni bitter, vanyam āhāram wild fruits and roots, bhakṣayan eating, katham how, vartayiṣyati nu will exist.

How will my son for whom the cooks with kundalas in their ears used to proudly prepare enough food and beverages subsist on astringent, pungent, bitter wild fruits and roots?
mahārhavastrasaṅvītō bhūtvā cirasukhōṣitaḥ৷৷2.12.100৷৷

kāṣāyaparidhānastu kathaṅ bhūmaunivatsyati.


mahārhavastra saṅvītaḥ bhūtvā wearing costly apparels, cirasukhōṣitaḥ having enjoyed comforts for a long time, kāṣāyaparidhānaḥ wearing saffron robes, kathaṅ vā how, bhūmau on the ground, nivatsyati dwell (sleep)

How will he who was habituated to wearing expensive apparels and to (royal) comforts over a long period of time live (sleep) on the ground, putting on saffron
robes?
kasyaitaddhāruṇaṅ vākyamēvaṅvidhamacintitam৷৷2.12.101৷৷

rāmasyāraṇyagamanaṅ bharatasyābhiṣēcanam.


rāmasya Rama's, araṇyagamanam departure for the forest, bharatasya Bharata's, abhiṣēcanam installation, ēvaṅvidham in this way, ētat this, dāruṇam dreadful, acintitam inconceivable, vākyam words, kasya whose?

Whose are these dreadful words, this inconceivable plan of Rama's exilement and Bharata's enthronement?
dhigastu yōṣitō nāma śaṭhā ssvārthaparāssadā.

na bravīmi striya ssarvā bharatasyaiva mātaram৷৷2.12.102৷৷


yōṣitaḥ nāma woman means, śaṭhāḥ secretly doing harm to others, sadā always, svārthaparāḥ
self-seeker, dhik astu shame, sarvāḥ all, striyaḥ women, na bravīmi I do not say, bharatasya Bharatha's, mātaram ēva mother alone.

A woman means one who secretly harms others. This is shameful indeed. They always seek selfish interests. I do not say this of all women, only of Bharata's mother.
anarthabhāvē.rthaparē! nṛśaṅsē mamānutāpāya niviṣṭabhāvē!.

kimapriyaṅ paśyasi mannimittaṅ hitānukāriṇyathavā.pi rāmē৷৷2.12.103৷৷


anarthabhāvē O malicious one, arthaparē O covetous one! nṛśaṅsē O cruel one! mama my, anutāpāya for tormenting, niviṣṭabhāvē having firm intention, mannimittam for my sake, kim what, apriyam wrong, athavāpi rather, hitānukāriṇi devoted to the welfare of others, rāmē in Rama, paśyasi are seeing?

O malicious one, O covetous one, O cruel one, O woman determined to torment
me, what fault have you seen in Rama who is always devoted to the welfare of others?
parityajēyuḥ pitarō hi putrānbhāryāḥ patīṅścāpi kṛtānurāgāḥ.

kṛtsnaṅ hi sarvaṅ kupitaṅ jagatsyāddṛṣṭvaiva rāmaṅ vyasanē nimagnam৷৷2.12.104৷৷


vyasanē in adversity, nimagnam plunged, rāmam Rama, dṛṣṭvaiva on seeing, pitaraḥ fathers, putrān their sons, parityajēyuḥ will abandon, kṛtānurāgāḥ affectionate, bhāryāḥ wives, patīṅścāpi (will abandon) also husbands, kṛtsnam the whole, jagat world, sarvam completely, kupitaṅ syāt will be inflamed.

This entire world will be inflamed to see Rama plunged in adversity. Fathers will abandon their sons. Wives, attached to their husbands, will forsake them.
ahaṅ punardēvakumārarūpamalaṅkṛtaṅ taṅ sutamāvrajantam.

nandāmi paśyannapi darśanēna bhavāmi dṛṣṭvaiva ca punaryuvēva৷৷2.12.105৷৷


ahaṅ punaḥ again on my part, dēvakumārarūpam handsome like the son of a god, alaṅkṛtam adorned, taṅ sutam that son, āvrajantam while coming (towards me), paśyan while looking at, darśanēnāpi even on his appearance, nandāmi I rejoice, dṛṣṭvā having seen, punaḥ again, yuvēva like a youth, bhavāmi ca I shall also become.

When I see my son, handsome and well-adorned like the son of a celestial deity, coming towards me, I rejoice. Even his very sight makes me grow young again.
vinā.pi sūryēṇa bhavētpravṛttiravarṣatā vajradharēṇa vā.pi.

rāmaṅ tu gacchantamita ssamīkṣya jīvēnna kaścittviti cētanā mē৷৷2.12.106৷৷


sūryēṇa vinā.pi even without the Sun, vajradharēṇa by Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, avarṣatā vāpi while not raining also, pravṛtti: activity, bhavēt can happen, tu but, itaḥ from here, gacchantam while departing, rāmam Rama, samīkṣya having seen, kaścit any one, na jīvēt will not live. iti this one, mē cētanā is my conviction.

Nature's activity will continue even without the Sun or even if Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, sends no rain but none will live to see Rama departing to the forest. This is my conviction.
vināśakāmāmahitāmamitrāmāvāsayaṅ mṛtyumivātmanastvām.

ciraṅ batāṅkēna dhṛtāsi sarpī mahāviṣā tēna hatō.smi mōhāt৷৷2.12.107৷৷


vināśakāmām wishing my destruction, ahitām wishing harm, amitrām like an enemy, tvām you, ātmanaḥ I, mṛtyumiva like death, avāsayam sheltered! mahāviṣā highly posionous, sarpī female snake, ciram for a long time, aṅkēna on the lap, dhṛtāsi were carried, tēna for that reason, mōhāt with delusion, hataḥ asmi I am being ruined.

Alas! I carried all along on my lap a highly poisonous female snake I gave you shelter while you were like death .This delusion is the cause of my ruin.You were my enemy. You wished me harm. You wished my destruction.
mayā ca rāmēṇa ca lakṣmaṇēna praśāstu hīnō bharatastvayā saha.

puraṅ ca rāṣṭraṅ ca nihatya bāndhavān mamāhitānāṅ ca bhavābhiharṣiṇī৷৷2.12.108৷৷


bharataḥ Bharata, mayā from me, lakṣmaṇēna ca together with Lakshmana, rāmēṇa with Rama, hīnaḥ devoid, tvayā saha with you, bāndhavān relatives, nihatya after slaying, puraṅ ca the city, rāṣṭraṅ ca the kingdom, praśāstu he may rule, mama my, ahitānām of the foes, abhiharṣiṇī causing delight, bhava become.

With Rama and Lakshmana withdrawn from me, my kinsmen killed, let Bharata along with you rule the city and the kingdom causing delight to my enemies.
nṛśaṅsavṛttē vyasanaprahāriṇi prasahya vākyaṅ yadihādya bhāṣasē.

na nāma tē kēna mukhātpatantyadhō viśīryamāṇā daśanā ssahasradhā৷৷2.12.109৷৷


nṛśaṅsavṛttē cruel-natured one, vyasanaprahāriṇi striking one while in difficulties, adya now, prasahy
forcibly, yat vākyam which words, bhāṣasē you are speaking (with that), tē your, mukhāt from face, daśanāḥ teeth, sahasradhā in thousand fragments, viśīryamāṇāḥ broken to pieces, kēna why, adhaḥ to the ground, na nāma patanti why are they not falling.

O cruel-hearted woman, you strike one in adversity. Why are your teeth with which you are now speaking (such harsh words) do not fall to the ground, broken into a thousand fragments?
na kiñcidāhāhitamapriyaṅ vacō na vētti rāmaḥ paruṣāṇi bhāṣitum.

kathannu rāmē hyabhirāmavādini bravīṣi dōṣānguṇanityasammatē৷৷2.12.110৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, kiñcit even a little, ahitam harmful, apriyam unkind, vacaḥ words, na āha does not speak, paruṣāṇi harsh, bhāṣitum to speak, na vētti does not know, abhirāmavādini one who talks pleasingly, guṇanityasammatē in a man who is always honoured for his virtues, rāmē in Rama, dōṣān faults, kathaṅ nu how, bravīṣi are you telling?

How do you find fault with Rama who does not utter even one harmful or unpalatable word, who does not know how to use harsh words, and who speaks pleasingly and who is always honoured for his virtues?
pratāmya vā prajvala vā praṇaśya vā sahasraśō vā sphuṭitā mahīṅ vraja.

na tē kariṣyāmi vaca ssudāruṇaṅ mamāhitaṅ kēkayarājapāṅsani৷৷2.12.111৷৷


kēkayarājapāṅsani O obloquy on the house of Kekaya, pratāmya vā grieve, prajvala vā or get burnt (in the fire), praṇaśya vā or get destroyed, sahasraśaḥ into thousand pieces, spuṭitā broken, mahīm the earth, vraja vā reach, sudāruṇam terrible, mama me, ahitam harmful, tē your, vacaḥ words, na kariṣyāmi I will not do.

O obloquy on the house of Kekaya, you may grieve or burn yourself in the fire, or get destroyed. Even if you fall down on earth broken into a thousand pieces I will not act on your terrible, harmful words.
kṣurōpamāṅ nityamasatpriyaṅvadāṅ praduṣṭabhāvāṅ svakulōpaghātinīm.

na jīvituṅ tvāṅ viṣahē.manōramāṅ didhakṣamāṇāṅ hṛdayaṅ sabandhanam৷৷2.12,112৷৷


kṣurōpamām like a knife, nityam always, asatpriyaṅvadām speaking pleasant lies, praduṣṭabhāvām wicked-natured lady, svakulōpaghātinīm destroyer of your own race, amanōramām one who does not impress the mind, sabandhanam along with all binding, hṛdayam heart, didhakṣamāṇām intent on burning, tvām you, jīvitum to live, na viṣahē cannot tolerate.

You are like a knife. You always speak palatable lies. You are malevolent. You are a destroyer of your own race. You displease the mind. You are intent on burning down all the links of my heart. I cannot bear to see you alive in this world.
na jīvitaṅ mē.sti punaḥkuta ssukhaṅ vinā৷৷tmajēnā.tmavataḥ kutō ratiḥ.

mamāhitaṅ dēvi na kartumarhasi spṛśāmi pādāvapi tē prasīda mē৷৷2.12.113৷৷


ātmajēna vinā without my son (Rama), mē for me, jīvitam life, nāsti does not exist, punaḥ again, sukham happiness, kutaḥ from where, ātmavataḥ of a self-respecting man like me, ratiḥ pleasure, dēvi O queen, mama my, ahitam harmful act, kartum to do, na arhasi does not behove you, tē your, pādau feet, spṛśāmyapi will touch also, mē in me, prasīda show favour.

There is no life for me without my son (Rama). What to speak of happiness again? Where is pleasure for a self-respecting man like me? O queen, it does not behove you to do this harmful act. I will touch your feet. Show pity on me.
sa bhūmipālō vilapannanāthavatstriyā gṛhītō hṛdayē.timātrayā.

papāta dēvyāścaraṇau prasāritāvubhāvasamspṛśya yathā.turastathā৷৷2.12.114৷৷


atimātrayā exceeding the limit of respect, striyā by a woman, hṛdayē in the heart, gṛhītaḥ having grasped, saḥ that, bhūmipālaḥ king, anāthavat like an orphan, vilapan wailing, prasāritau stretched apart, dēvyāḥ the queens, caraṇau both feet, asamspṛśya (asamprāpya) without touching (without reaching), āturaḥ sick, yathā as, tathā so, papāta fell down.

The king, with his heart in the grip of a woman, wailing like an orphan tried to reach her feet, exceeding the limit of self-respect but, unable to touch them as she pulled
them apart, he collapsed like a sick man.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvādaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twelfth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
