[Kaikeyi insists on the boons -- Ayodhya is decorated all over--People wait eagerly for the event -- Vasistha arrives at the inner apartment of the king-- Dasaratha sends Sumantra to fetch Rama.]

putraśōkārditaṅ pāpā visaṅjñaṅ patitaṅ bhuvi.

vivēṣṭamānamudvīkṣya saikṣvākamidamabravīt৷৷2.14.1৷৷


sā pāpā that evil woman, putraśōkārditam tortured with grief on account of his son, visaṅjñam having lost senses, bhuvi on the floor, patitam had fallen, vivēṣṭamānam writhing, aikṣvākam (Dasaratha) born in the Ikshvaku race, idam this word, abravīt said.

The evil woman (Kaikeyi) said to the king of the Ikshvaku race who lay unconscious on the floor writhing and tormented with grief on account of his son.
pāpaṅ kṛtvaiva kimidaṅ mama saṅśrutya saṅśravam.

śēṣē kṣititalē sannaḥ sthityāṅ sthātuṅ tvamarhasi৷৷2.14.2৷৷


mama me (what you have done for me), saṅśravam the promise, saṅśrutya having promised, pāpaṅ kṛtvā iva as if you have committed a sin done a sinful act, sannaḥ a dejected man, kṣititalē on the ground (floor), śēṣē lying down, idam this, kim what, tvam you, sthityām status, sthātum to remain, arhasi you are worthy of.

(Kaikeyi said) What is this? After hearing my response to the promised boon, why are you lying down on the floor dejected as if you had committed a sin? It behoves
you to maintain your status.
āhu ssatyaṅ hi paramaṅ dharmaṅ dharmavidō janāḥ.

satyamāśritya hi mayā tvaṅ ca dharmaṅ prabōdhitaḥ৷৷2.14.3৷৷


dharmavidaḥ conversant with righteousness, janāḥ people, satyam truth, paramaṅ dharmam is a great virtue, āhuḥ hi are saying, mayā ca by me also, satyam truth, āśritya by following, tvam you, dharmam about your duty, prabōdhitaḥ enlightened with.

Those conversant with righteousness say that truth is a great virtue. By following the truth, I have enlightened you about your duty.
saṅśrutya śaibyaśśyēnāya svāṅ tanuṅ jagatīpatiḥ.

pradāya pakṣiṇē rāja njagāma gatimuttamām৷৷2.14.4৷৷


rājan O king, jagatīpatiḥ lord of the earth, śaibyaḥ Saibya, śyēnāya pakṣiṇē to a hawk, a bird, svām his own, tanum body, saṅśrutya having promised, uttamām highest, gatim state, jagāma attained.

O King! O lord of the earth! (king) Saibya attained the highest state by offering his own body to a hawk in accordance with his promise.
tathā hyalarkastējasvī brāhmaṇē vēdapāragē.

yācamānē svakē nētrē uddhṛtyāvimanā dadau৷৷2.14.5৷৷


tathā In the same way, tējasvī lustrous, alarkaḥ (king) Alarka, vēdapāragē to an adept in the Vedas, yācamānē soliciting, brāhmaṇē (to) the brahmin, svakē his own, nētrē eyes, uddhṛtya havng plucked, avimanāḥ without hesitation, dadau hi gave it indeed.

In the same way the lustrous king Alarka, on being solicited by a brahmin who was an adept in the Vedas, plucked his own eyes and gave them to him without hesitation.
saritāṅ tu patissvalpāṅ maryādāṅ satyamanvitaḥ.

satyānurōdhātsamayē svāṅ vēlāṅ nātivartatē৷৷2.14.6৷৷


saritāṅ patiḥ tu as regards the lord of rivers (ocean), satyam anvita: who follows the truth, svalpām very little, maryādām as boundary, svām his own, vēlām shore, samayē when time
comes, satyānurōdhāt in obedience to truth, nātivartatē does not trangress.

The ocean, lord of rivers, even when (tidal) time comes does not cross the shore in obedience to truth.
satyamēkapadaṅ brahma satyē dharmaḥ pratiṣṭitaḥ.

satyamēvākṣayā vēdā satyēnaivāpyatē sparam৷৷2.14.7৷৷


satyam truth, ēkapadam in the form of one word, brahma Brahman, satyē on truth, dharmaḥ righteousness, pratiṣṭhitaḥ is established firmly, satyamēva truth alone, akṣayāḥ is imperishable, vēdāḥ Vedas, satyamēva by truth alone, param supreme state, āpyatē will be attained.

Truth is Brahman in one word. Righteousness is firmly established in truth. Truth is the imperishable Vedas. The supreme state can be attained by means of truth.
satyaṅ samanuvartasva yadi dharmē dhṛtā matiḥ.

saphalassa varō mē.stu varadō hyasi sattama৷৷2.14.8৷৷


sattama O excellent one, matiḥ your mind, dharmē in righteousness, dhṛtā yadi if fixed firmly, satyam truth, samanuvartasva follow it , mē my, varaḥ boon, saphalaḥ astu may be fulfilled, varadaḥ asi hi you are the bestower of boons indeed.

O excellent one, if your mind is firmly fixed in righteousness, then by following it fulfil the boon granted to me.You are the bestower of boons indeed!
dharmasyaihābhikāmārthaṅ mama caivābhicōdanāt.

pravrājaya sutaṅ rāmaṅ triḥkhalu tvāṅ bravīmyaham৷৷2.14.9৷৷


iha in this matter, dharmasya of righteousness, abhikāmārtham fulfilling for the sake of, mama my, abhicōdanācca urging you, sutam son, rāmam Rama, pravrājaya be exiled, tvām to you, triḥ thrice, aham I, abravīmi am telling you.

You must uphold righteousness. I also urge you to do that. Send your son Rama to the forest. I am repeating this statememt thrice.
samayaṅ ca mamāryēmaṅ yadi tvaṅ na kariṣyasi.

agratastē parityaktā parityakṣyāmi jīvitam৷৷2.14.10৷৷


ārya O noble one, tvam you, mama my, imam this, samayam agreement, na kariṣyasi yadi if you do not fulfil, parityaktā abandoned (by you), tē agrataḥ in your presence, jīvitam my life, parityakṣyāmi will discard.

O noble one, if you do not fulfil the agreement, it will mean I have been abandoned by you. (Therefore) I will give up my life in your presence.
ēvaṅ pracōditō rājā kaikēyyā nirviśaṅkayā.

nāśakatpāśamunmōktuṅ balirindrakṛtaṅ yathā৷৷2.14.11৷৷


nirviśaṅkayā without fear or hesitation, kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, ēvam in this way, pracōditaḥ having been urged, rājā king, baliḥ emperor Bali, indrakṛtaṅ yathā like the one employed by Indra (through Vamana), pāśam noose (promise), mōktum to release, nāśakat was not able.

In this way urged by Kaikeyi without fear or hesitation, he (Dasaratha), like Bali unable to release himself from the noose cast by Indra (through Vamana), could not get out of the noose of promise.
udbhrāntahṛdayaścāpi vivarṇavadanō.bhavat.

sa dhuryōvaiparispandanyugacakrāntaraṅ yathā৷৷2.14.12৷৷


saḥ Dasaratha, yugacakrāntaram between the wheels and the yoke, parispandan restlessly moving, dhuryaḥ yathā like a beast of burden (bullock), udbhrāntahṛdayaḥ with heart beating wildly, vivarṇavadanaḥ cāpi with a pale face too, abhavat remained.

Like a bullock, restlessly moving between the wheels and the yoke, Dasaratha's
heart started beating wildly and his face turned pale.
vihvalābhyāṅ ca nētrābhyāmapaśyanniva bhūpatiḥ.

kṛcchrāddhairyēṇa saṅstabhya kaikēyīmidamabravīt৷৷2.14.13৷৷


bhūpatiḥ king, vihvalābhyām nētrābhyām eyes overwhelmed (with fears), apaśyanniva as if unable to see, kṛcchrāt with great difficulty, dhairyēṇa with courage, saṅstabhya gaining a firm footing, kaikēyīm to Kaikeyi, idam this, abravīt said.

The king was unable to see with his eyes overwhelmed (with tears). Gaining with great difficulty a firm footing and courage he addressed Kaikeyi:
yastē mantrakṛtaḥ pāṇiragnau pāpē! mayā dhṛtaḥ.

taṅ tyajāmi svajaṅ caiva tava putraṅ tvayā saha৷৷2.14.14৷৷


pāpē! O wicked woman, agnau at the sacred fire, mantrakṛtaḥ amid chantings of mantras, tē your, yaḥ pāṇiḥ which hand, mayā by me, dhṛtaḥ was held, tam that one, svajam begotten by me, tava putraṅ caiva your son also, tvayā saha along with you, tyajāmi disown.

O wicked woman, I held your hand amid chantings of mantras with the sacred fire (as witness). I now disown that hand, you and your son begotten by me.
prayātā rajanī dēvi sūryasyōdayanaṅprati.

abhiṣēkaṅ gurujanastvarayiṣyati māṅ dhruvam৷৷2.14.15৷৷


dēvi O queen, rajanī night, sūryasya of the Sun, udayanaṅ prati about to rise, prayātā departed, abhiṣēkam consecration, gurujanaḥ preceptors, mām me, dhruvam definitely, tvarayiṣyati will hurry me

O queen! the night has departed and the Sun is about to rise. The preceptors now will definitely ask me to hasten for the consecration.
rāmābhiṣēkasaṅbhāraistadarthamupakalpitaiḥ.

rāmaḥ kārayitavyō mē mṛtasya salilakriyām৷৷2.14.16৷৷


tadartham for that purpose, upakalpitaiḥ arranged, rāmābhiṣēkasambhāraiḥ all preparations for Rama's consecration, mṛtasya of the dead, mē to me, rāmaḥ Rama, salilakriyām the funeal rites it offering water to the dead, kārayitavyaḥ should be done.

With the materials already collected for the consecration of Rama he will perform my funeral rite of offering water to the dead.
tvayā saputrayā naiva kartavyā salilakriyā.

vyāhantā.syaśubhācārē! yadi rāmābhiṣēcanam৷৷2.14.17৷৷


aśubhācārē O woman of inauspicious practices, rāmābhiṣēcanam Rama's consecration, vyāhantāsi yadi if you prevent, saputrayā along with your son, tvayā by you, salilakriyā offering water to the dead, naivakartavyā should not be done.

O woman of inauspicious practices, since you are obstructing Rama's coronation, you and your son shall not perform my funeral rite of offering water to the dead.
na ca śaktō.smyahaṅ draṣṭuṅ dṛṣṭvā pūrvaṅ tathāsukham.

hataharṣaṅ nirānandaṅ punarjanamavāṅmukham৷৷2.14.18৷৷


pūrvam formerly, tathāsukham enjoying such happiness, janam people, dṛṣṭvā having seen, punaḥ again, hataharṣam bereft of cheerfulness, nirānandam devoid of happiness, avāṅmukham with downcast faces, draṣṭum to see, aham I, na śaknōmi ca not able.

Having seen people formerly enjoying happiness, I cannot see them again with their downcast, cheerless faces devoid of all happiness.
tāṅ tathā bruvatastasya bhūmipasya mahātmanaḥ.

prabhātā śarvarī puṇyā candranakṣatraśālinī৷৷2.14.19৷৷


mahātmanaḥ high-souled, tasya bhūmipasya for that king, tām to her, tathā in that way, bruvataḥ while speaking, candranakṣatraśālinī resplendent with the Moon and the stars, puṇyā holy, śarvarī night, prabhātā dawned.

While the king was thus speaking to her (Kaikeyi) that holy night resplendent with the Moon and the stars, the day dawned.
tataḥ pāpasamācārā kaikēyī pārthivaṅ punaḥ.

uvāca paruṣaṅ vākyaṅ vākyajñā rōṣamūrchitā৷৷2.14.20৷৷


tataḥ after that, pāpasamācārā of sinful conduct, vākyajñā skilful in words, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, rōṣamūrchitā rendered senseless by wrath, punaḥ again, pārthivam to the king, paruṣam in harsh, vākyam words, uvāca said.

Thereafter, Kaikeyi of sinful conduct and skilful in the use of words, rendered senseless by wrath, again addressing the king in harsh words said:
kimidaṅ bhāṣasē rājanvākyaṅ gararujōpamam.

ānāyayitumakliṣṭaṅ putraṅ rāmamihārhasi৷৷2.14.21৷৷


rājan O king, gararujōpamam comparable to the pain of venom, vākyam words, bhāṣasē are you speaking?, idaṅ kim what is this?, akliṣṭam one who is not pained, putram son, rāmam Rama, iha here, ānāyayitum to bring, arhasi behoves you.

O king, why are you speaking these painful, poisonous words? What is this? It
behoves you to summon your son Rama who does not expearience this pain.
sthāpya rājyē mama sutaṅ kṛtvā rāmaṅ vanēcaram.

nissapatnāṅ ca māṅ kṛtvā kṛtakṛtyō bhaviṣyasi৷৷2.14.22৷৷


mama sutam my son, rājyē in the kingdom, sthāpya having installed, rāmam Rama, vanēcaram a forestor, kṛtvā having made, mām me, niḥsapatnām devoid of rivals, kṛtvā having made, kṛtakṛtyaḥ bhaviṣyasi you will have fulfilled your duty.

Only after you have installed my son in the kingdom and sent Rama to the forest and made me free from rivals, you shall have your duty fulfiled.
sa nunna iva tīkṣṇēna pratōdēna hayōttamaḥ.

rājā pracōditō.bhīkṣṇaṅ kaikēyīmidamabravīt৷৷2.14.23৷৷


saḥ rājā that king (Dasaratha), tīkṣṇēna with a sharp, pratōdēna by the lash, nunnaḥ beaten up, hayōttamaḥ iva like a horses of the best breed, abhīkṣṇam exceedingly, pracōditaḥ incited, kaikēyīm to Kaikeyi, idam this word, abravīt said.

The king who was very much incited by her words, like a horse of the best breed whipped by the lash, replied to Kaikeyi:
dharmabandhēna badhdō.smi naṣṭā ca mama cētanā.

jyēṣṭhaṅ putraṅ priyaṅ rāmaṅ draṣṭumicchāmi dhārmikam৷৷2.14.24৷৷


dharmabandhēna by bond of righteousness, baddhaḥ asmi I am bound, mama cētanā ca my intellect, naṣṭā is destroyed, dhārmikam virtuous, jyēṣṭham eldest, priyam beloved, putram son, rāmam Rama, draṣṭum to see, icchāmi wish.

I am bound by bond of righteousness. My intellect is destroyed. I wish to see my beloved, virtuous first-born, Rama.
tataḥ prabhātāṅ rajanīmuditē ca divākarē.

puṇyē nakṣatrayōgē ca muhūrtē ca samāhitē৷৷2.14.25৷৷

vasiṣṭhō guṇasampanna śśiṣyai parivṛtastadā.

upagṛhyāśu sambhārānpravivēśa purōttamam৷৷2.14.26৷৷


tataḥ then, prabhātām at dawn, rajanīm the night (gone by), divākarē the Sun, uditē having arisen, puṇyē sacred, nakṣatrayōgē ca in favourable conjunction with the star, muhūrtē in auspicious time (for coronation), samāhitē having arrived, tadā then, guṇasampannaḥ virtuous, vasiṣṭhaḥ Vasistha śiṣyaiḥ with disciples, parivṛtaḥ surrounded by, sambhārān articles (for the ceremony), upagṛhya having collected, āśu quickly, purōttamam best of (the palace), pravivēśa entered.

The night dawned. Ths Sun rose. The auspicious time with the sacred star in (favourable) conjunction arrived. The virtuous Vasistha, surrounded by his disciples, soon entered the best of abodes with the articles collected (for the ceremony).
siktasammārjitapathāṅ patākōttama bhūṣitām.

vicitrakusumākīrṇāṅ nānāsragbhirvirājitām৷৷2.14.27৷৷

saṅhṛṣṭamanujōpētāṅ samṛddhavipaṇāpaṇām.

mahōtsavasamākīrṇāṅ rāghavārthē samutsukām৷৷2.14.28৷৷

candanāgarudhūpaiśca sarvataḥ pratidhūpitām.

tāṅ purīṅ samatikramya purandarapurōpamām৷৷.2.14.29৷৷

dadarśāntaḥpuraśrēṣṭhaṅ nānādvijagaṇāyutam.

paurajānapadākīrṇaṅ brāhmaṇairupaśōbhitam৷৷2.14.30৷৷

yajñavidbhi ssusampūrṇaṅ sadasyaiḥ paramadvijaiḥ.


siktasammārjitapathām streets swept and sprinkled with water, patākōttamabhūṣitām decorated with excellent flags, vicitrakusumākīrṇām strewn with flowers of variegated colours, nānāsragbhi: with various flower garlands, virājitām shining with, saṅhṛṣṭamanujōpētām filled with people who were rejoicing, samṛddhavipaṇāpaṇām stalls and markets abundantly filled with merchandise, mahōtsavasamākīrṇām full of great festivities, rāghavārthē for the sake of the scion of the Raghus (Rama), samutsukām curious, sarvataḥ everywhere, candanāgurudhūpaiḥ with sandal, and incense, pratidhūpitām made fragrant, purandarapurōpamām resembling Amaravati, the abode of Indra, tāṅ purīm that city, samatikramya having covered some distance (by walk ), nānādvijagaṇāyutam with many brahmins, paurajānapadākīrṇam thronged with citizens and villagers, brāhmaṇaiḥ with brahmins, upaśōbhitam graced by, yajñavidbhiḥ conversant with sacrificial rituals, sadasyaiḥ with priests, paramadvijaiḥ with eminent brahmins, sampūrṇam filled with, antaḥpuraśrēṣṭham the best of inner apartments, dadarśa beheld.

The streets in Ayodhya were swept and sprinkled with water, decorated with excellent flags, strewn with flowers of variegated colours and bedecked with various flower garlands. The streets were crowded with curious people rejoicing at the event. The stalls and markets were abundantly filled with merchandise.The city was full of great festivities. The people were curious to see Rama. Sandalwood and incense were burnt and fragrance pervaded in all the directions. The city resembled Amaravati, the abode of Indra.
Vasistha entered the city, covered some distance and beheld the best inner apartment. There he saw host of brahmins, citizens and villagers. The best of inner apartments was graced with brahmins who were experts in sacrificial rituals priests and eminent brahmins.
tadantaḥpuramāsādya vyaticakrāma taṅ janam৷৷2.14.31৷৷

vasiṣṭhaḥ paramaprītaḥ paramarṣirvivēśa ca.


paramarṣiḥ an eminent ascetic, vasiṣṭhaḥ Vasistha, paramaprītaḥ exceedingly delighted, tat antaḥpuram that inner apartment, āsādya having reached, taṅ janam those people, vyaticakrāma passed by, vivēśa ca also entered.

Having reached the inner apartment, the eminent ascetic, Vasistha felt very happy. He passed by the people and entered the inner apartment.
satvapaśyadviniṣkrāntaṅ sumantraṅ nāma sārathim৷৷2.14.32৷৷

dvārē manujasiṅhasya sacivaṅ priyadarśanam.


saḥ tu as for him (Vasistha), manujasiṅhasya a lion among men (Dasaratha's), dvārē at the
entrance, viniṣkrāntam coming out, sacivam minister, priyadarśanam handsome, sumantraṅ nāma by name Sumantra, sārathim charioteer, apaśyat saw.

Sage Vasistha saw handsome Sumantra, minister to Dasaratha, a lion among the charioteers coming out of the gate.
tamuvāca mahātējā ssūtaputraṅ viśāradam৷৷2.14.33

vasiṣṭhaḥ kṣipramācakṣva nṛpatērmāmihāgatam.


mahātējāḥ highly lustrous, vasiṣṭhaḥ Vasistha, viśāradam expert, taṅ sūtaputram the son of the charioteer, Sumantra, uvāca (āha) said, mām me, iha here, āgatam arrival, nṛpatēḥ to the king, kṣipram immediately, ācakṣva announce.

Effulgent Vasistha said to the expert chariotieer Sumantra to inform the king immediately of his arrival.
imē gaṅgōdakaghaṭā ssāgarēbhyaśca kāñcanāḥ৷৷2.14.34৷৷

audumbaraṅ bhadrapīṭhamabhiṣēkārthamāgatam.

sarvabījāni gandhāśca ratnāni vividhāni ca৷৷2.14.35৷৷

kṣaudraṅ dadhi ghṛtaṅ lājā darbhāssumanasaḥ payaḥ.

aṣṭau ca kanyā rucirā mattaśca varavāraṇaḥ৷৷2.14.36৷৷

caturaśvō rathaśśrīmānnistriṅśō dhanuruttamam.

vāhanaṅ narasaṅyuktaṅ chatraṅ ca śaśisannibham৷৷2.14.37৷৷

śvētē ca vālavyajanē bhṛṅgāruśca hiraṇmayaḥ.

hēmadāmapinadhdaśca kakudmānpāṇḍurō vṛṣaḥ৷৷2.14.38৷৷

kēsarī ca caturdaṅṣṭrō hariśrēṣṭhō mahābalaḥ.

siṅhāsanaṅ vyāghratanu ssamiddhaśca hutāśanaḥ৷৷2.14.39৷৷

sarvavāditrasaṅghāśca vēśyāścālaṅkṛtā sstrayaḥ.

ācāryā brāhmaṇā gāvaḥ puṇyāśca mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ৷৷2.14.40৷৷

paurajānapadaśrēṣṭhā naigamāśca gaṇai ssaha.

ētē cānyē ca bahavō nīyamānāḥ priyaṅvadāḥ৷৷2.14.41৷৷

abhiṣēkāya rāmasya saha tiṣṭhanti pārthivaiḥ.


imē these, gaṅgōdakaghaṭāḥ pots filled with waters of the Ganges, sāgarēbhyaḥ ca from the seas, kāñcanā gold vessels, audumbaram made from udumbara wood, bhadrapīṭham auspicious seat, abhiṣēkārtham for the installation ceremony, āgatam has come, sarvabījāni all kinds of seeds, gandhāḥ perfumes, vividhāni different, ratnāni ca precious stones, kṣaudram honey, dadhi curd, ghṛtam ghee, lājāḥ puffed grains, darbhāḥ kusha grass (special grass used for offering at the time of rituals), sumanasaḥ flowers, payaḥ milk, rucirāḥ beautiful, aṣṭau eight, kanyāḥ girls, mattaḥ intoxicated with ichor, vāraṇaḥ elephant, caturaśvaḥ yoked with four horses, śrīmān dignified, rathaḥ chariot, nistriṅśaḥ sword, uttamam elegant, dhanuḥ bow, narasaṅyuktam accompanied by bearers, vāhanam vehicle (palanquin), śaśisannibham resembling fullmoon, chatraṅ ca umbrella also, śvētē white, vālavyajanē fans made of Yak's tails, hiraṇmayaḥ golden, bhṛṅgāruḥ vessel, hēmadāma(pinaddhaḥ) nibaddhaḥ tied with golden ropes, kakudmān humped, pāṇḍuraḥ pale-coloured, vṛṣaḥ bull, kēśarī lion, caturdraṣṭraḥ having four large teeth, mahābalaḥ mighty, hariśrēṣṭhaḥ excellent horse, siṅhāsanam throne, vyāghratanuḥ tiger skin, samiddhaḥ firewood, hutāśanaḥ fire, sarvavāditrasaṅghā: ca all kinds of musical instruments also, vēśyāḥ courtesans, alaṅkṛtāḥ well-decorated, striyaḥ women, ācāryāḥ preceptors, brāhmaṇāḥ brahmins, gāvaḥ cows, puṇyāḥ sacred, mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ animals, birds, paurajānapadaśrēṣṭhāḥ eminent citizens and villagers, naigamāḥ ca gaṇaiḥ saha with groups of merchants, ētē all of them, priyaṅvadāḥ speaking pleasant words, nīyamānāḥ being brought, bahavaḥ many, anyē ca others, pārthivaiḥ saha along with kings, rāmasya Rama's, abhiṣēkāya for coronation, tiṣṭhanti stand.

Here are the pots filled with water from river Ganga and golden vessels with water from the seas. And throne made of udumbara wood for the installation ceremony. All kinds of seeds, perfumes, different kinds of precious stones, honey, curd, ghee, puffed grains, kusha grass (special grass used in rituals), flowers, milk, eight beautiful girls, an intoxicated elephant, a dignified chariot drawn by four horses, a sword, an elegant bow, a palanquin accompanied by bearers, an umbrella resembling the full Moon, two white fans made of Yak's tails, a golden vessel, a pale-coloured humped bull, wearing golden gerland, a lion having four strong and large teeth, a mighty horse of the best breed, a throne, tiger skin, fire kindled with faggots, all kinds of musical instruments, courtesans, well-decorated women, preceptors, brahmins, cows, sacred animals and birds, eminent citizens and villagers, groups of merchants all speaking pleasant words and kings -- all are here for Rama's coronation.
tvarayasva mahārājaṅ yathā samuditē.hani৷৷2.14.42৷৷

puṣyē nakṣatrayōgē ca rāmō rājyamavāpnuyāt.


ahani day, samuditē commences, (puṇyē sacred), puṣyē nakṣatrayōgē ca under conjunction of the Pushya star, rāmaḥ Rama, yathā in a way, rājyam kingdom, avāpnuyāt may obtain, in that way, mahārājam maharaja (Dasaratha), tvarayasva hasten.

Hasten the maharaja as Rama has to be installed in the kingdom as soon as the day breaks under the conjunction of the sacred Pushya star.
iti tasya vaca śśrutvā sūtaputrō mahātmanaḥ৷৷2.14.43৷৷

stuvannṛpatiśārdūlaṅ pravivēśa nivēśanam.


sūtaputraḥ charioteer Sumantra, tasya mahātmanaḥ of that great Vasistha, iti in this way, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, nṛpatiśārdūlam tiger among kings, stuvan while praising, nivēśanam palace, pravivēśa entered.

Having heard the words of the great Vasistha, charioteer Sumantra entered the
inner apartment, singing the praise of this tiger among kings (Dasaratha).
taṅ tu pūrvōditaṅ vṛdhdaṅ dvārasthā rāja sammatam৷৷2.14.44৷৷

na śēkurabhisaṅrōdhduṅ rājñaḥ priyacikīrṣavaḥ.


dvārasthā: door-keepers, rājñaḥ of the king, priyacikīrṣavaḥ beloved well-wishers, pūrvōditam who had come earlier, vṛddham aged, rājasammatam liked by the king, taṅ tu him, abhisaṅrōddhum to detain, na śēkuḥ were not able.

The door-keepers, beloved well-wishers of the king, did not detain aged Sumantra who was liked by the king and who had arrived early.
sa samīpasthitō rājñastāmavasthāmajajñivān৷৷2.14.45৷৷

vāgbhiḥ paramatuṣṭābhirabhiṣṭōtuṅ pracakramē.


saḥ he, rājñaḥ of the king, samīpasthaḥ being near, tām that particular, avasthām state of mind, ajajñivān was unaware, paramatuṣṭābhiḥ with highly pleasing, vāgbhi: words, abhiṣṭōtum to praise, pracakramē commenced.

Sumantra approached the king unaware of the state of his mind and commenced praising him in highly pleasing words (as usual).
tata ssūtō yathākālaṅ pārthivasya nivēśanē৷৷2.14.46৷৷

sumantraḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā tuṣṭāva jagatīpatim.


tataḥ then, sūtaḥ charioteer, sumantraḥ Sumantra, pārthivasya king's, nivēśanē in the apartment, prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā with folded hands, yathākālam appropriate to the time, jagatīpatim lord of the earth, tuṣṭāva praised.

Thereafter the charioteer Sumantra entered the inner apartment of the king, and with folded hands began singing the praise of the lord of the earth appropriate to the hour.
yathā nandati tējasvī sāgarō bhāskarōdayē৷৷2.14.47৷৷

prītaḥ prītēna manasā tathā.nandaghana ssvataḥ.


svataḥ inherently, ānandaghanaḥ full of delight, tējasvī mighty, sāgaraḥ ocean, bhāskarōdayē at sunrise, yathā just as that, nandati rejoices, tathā in that way, prītēna pleased, manasā mind, prītaḥ became delighted.

Just as the mighty ocean rejoices at sunrise, the inherently cheerful Sumantra became delighted to see the king.
indramasyāṅ tu vēlāyāmabhituṣṭāva mātaliḥ৷৷2.14.48৷৷

sō.jayaddānavānsarvāṅstathā tvāṅ bōdhayāmyaham.


mātaliḥ charioteer, asyāṅ vēlāyām at this point of time, indram Indra, abhituṣṭāva extoled, saḥ that Indra, sarvān all, dānavān demons, ajayat conquered, tathā in that way, aham I, tvām you, bōdhayāmi awakening.

Just as Indra's charioteer at this time (at dawn) extols him, the conquerer of demons, so do I rouse you (with a song).
vēdāssahāṅgavidyāśca yathāhyātmabhuvaṅ vibhum৷৷2.14.49.

brahmāṇaṅ bōdhayantyadya tathā tvāṅ bōdhayāmyaham.


sahāṅgavidyāḥ together with the knowledge of Vedangas, vēdāḥ Vedas, ātmabhuvam self-born, vibhum lord, brahmāṇam Brahma, yathā as, bōdhayanti awakening, tathā so, aham I, adya now, tvām you, bōdhayāmi rousing.

Just as the Vedas and Vedangas awaken the self-born lord Brahma, so do I awaken you.
ādityassaha candrēṇa yathā bhūtadharāṅ śubhām৷৷2.14.50৷৷

bōdhayatyadya pṛthivīṅ tathā tvāṅ bōdhayāmyaham.


saha candrēṇa along with the Moon, ādityaḥ the Sun, bhūtadharām supporter of all beings, śubhām auspicious, pṛthivīm earth, yathā how, bōdhayati awakens, tathā in that manner, aham I, tvām
you, adyabōdhayāmi am awakening you today.

As the Sun along with the Moon awakens the auspicious earth which supports all beings, in the same way I am awakening you today.
uttiṣṭhāśu mahārāja kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ৷৷2.14.51৷৷

virājamānō vapuṣā mērōriva divākaraḥ.


mahārāja O maharaja, kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ clad in auspicious robes befitting the festivity, vapuṣā in body, virājamānaḥ shining, mērōḥ mount Meru, divākaraḥ iva like the Sun, āśu immediately, uttiṣṭha get up.

O mighty king! get up at once like the Sun rising up mount Meru. Put on your beautiful body auspicious robes befitting the festivity.
sōmasūryau ca kākutstha! śivavaiśravaṇāvapi৷৷2.14.52৷৷

varuṇaścāgnirindraśca vijayaṅ pradiśantu tē.


kākutstha O descendant of Kakutstha, sōmasūryau ca moon and sun, śivavaiśravaṇāvapi Siva and Kubera, varuṇaḥ ca Varuna, agni: Agni, indraḥ ca Indra also, tē to you, vijayam all victory, pradiśantu bestow.

O descendent of Kakutstha, may Moon and Sun, Siva and Kubera, Varuna, Agni and Indra bestow victory on you.
gatā bhagavatī rātriḥ kṛtaṅ kṛtyamidaṅ tava৷৷2.14.53৷৷

buddhyasva nṛpaśārdūla! kuru kāryamanantaram.

udatiṣṭhata rāmasya samagramabhiṣēcanam৷৷2.14.54৷৷


nṛpaśārdūla! a tiger among kings, bhagavatī holy, rātriḥ night, gatā passed, tava your, idam this, kṛtakṛtyam tasks accomplished, buddhyasva get enlightened, anantaram thereafter, kāryam
installation ceremony, kuru perform, rāmasya Rama's, samagram cimplete, abhiṣēcanam preparations for coronation, udatiṣṭhata are ready.

O best among kings! the holy night has passed. Having been acquainted with the acts accomplished so far, perform whatever is further necessary for the installation ceremony. All preparations for Rama's coronation ceremony have since been complete.
paurajānāpadaiścāpi naigamaiśca kṛtāñjaliḥ.

svayaṅ vaśiṣṭhō bhagavānbrāhmaṇai ssaha tiṣṭhati৷৷2.14.55৷৷


bhagavān venerable, vasiṣṭhaḥ Vasistha, paurajanapadaiścāpi the inhabitants of town and country, naigamaiśca by merchants, kṛtāñjali: greeted with folded hands, brāhmaṇaiḥ saha along with brahmins, svayam in person, tiṣṭhati is waiting.

Venerable Vasistha along with inhabitants of the city and countryside including merchants and brahmins with folded hands awaits you.
kṣipramājñāpyatāṅ rājanrāghavasyābhiṣēcanam.

yathā hyapālāḥ paśavō yathā sēnā hyanāyakā৷৷2.14.56৷৷

yathā candraṅ vinā rātriryathā gāvō vinā vṛṣam.

ēvaṅ hi bhavitā rāṣṭraṅ yatra rājā na dṛśyatē৷৷2.14.57৷৷


rājan O king! rāghavasya Rama's, abhiṣēcanam coronation, kṣipram promptly, ājñāpyatām be ordered, apālāḥ without keeper, paśavaḥ cattle, yathā as, anāyakā without commander, sēnā
army, yathā as, candraṅ vinā without moon, rātriḥ night, yathā as, vṛṣaṅ vinā without a bull, gāvaḥ cows, yathā as, yatra where, rājā king, na dṛśyatē is not seen, rāṣṭram kingdom, ēvam just like that, bhavitā hi will become.

O king! Rama's installation may be promptly ordered. As herds without herdsman, army without commander, night without the Moon, and cows without a bull, so is a kingdom without a king.
iti tasya vaca śśṛtvā sāntvapūrvamivārthavat.

abhyakīryata śōkēna bhūya ēva mahīpatiḥ৷৷2.14.58৷৷


mahīpatiḥ lord of the earth, iti in this way, sāntvapūrvamiva as though in appealing tone, arthavat meaningful, tasya vacaḥ his words, śrutvā having heard, bhūyaḥ ēva again, śōkēna in grief, abhyakīryata was pervaded.

Hearing these meaningful words of Sumantra uttered in an appealing tone, the lord of the earth relapsed into grief.
tata ssarājā taṅ sūtaṅ sannaharṣa ssutaṅ prati.

śōkaraktēkṣaṇa śśrīmānudvīkṣyōvāca dhārmikaḥ৷৷2.14.59৷৷

vākyaistu khalu marmāṇi mama bhūyō nikṛntasi.


dhārmikaḥ virtuous, śrīmān glorious, saḥ rājā that king, sutaṅ prati about his son, sannaharṣaḥ cheerless, śōkaraktēkṣaṇaḥ eyes red with tears, udvīkṣya looking upwards, taṅ sūtam to that charioteer, uvāca said, vākyaiḥ with words, mama my, marmāṇi vital parts of body, bhūyaḥ (ēva) still more, nikṛntasi are piercing (causing excessive pain).

The virtuous and glorious king thinking of his son without cheer looked upward with eyes red with tears and said to the charioteer, You are causing my heart excruciating pain with your words.
sumantraḥ karuṇaṅ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā dīnaṅ ca pārthivam.

pragṛhītāñjaliḥ kiñcittasmāddēśādapākramat৷৷2.14.60৷৷


sumantraḥ Sumantra, karuṇam sorrowful words, śrutvā having heard, dīnam wretched, pārthivam king, dṛṣṭvā ca having seen, pragṛhītāñjaliḥ with palms folded, tasmāt dēśāt from that place, kiñcit a little distance, apākramat moved away.

Having heard the sorrowful words of the king and having seen his wretched state Sumantra with palms folded moved away a little from the place.
yadā vaktuṅ svayaṅ dainyānna śaśāka mahīpatiḥ৷৷2.14.61৷৷

tadā sumantraṅ mantrajñā kaikēyī pratyuvāca ha.


mahīpatiḥ lord of the earth (the king), dainyāt due to the wretched conditon, svayam personally, vaktum to speak out, yadā when, na śaśāka was not able, tadā then, mantrajñā kaikēyī Kaikeyi, sumantram to Sumantra, pratyuvāca ha said in reply.

When the king himself in that wretched state was not able to speak to Sumantra, crafty Kaikeyi said to him in reply:
sumantra! rājā rajanīṅ rāmaharṣasamutsukaḥ৷৷2.14.62৷৷

prajāgarapariśrāntō nidrāyā vaśamupēyivān.


sumantra! O Sumantra, rājā king, rāmaharṣasamutsukaḥ excited with joy in connection with Rama's coronation, rajanīm entire night, prajāgarapariśrāntaḥ weary with keeping awake all night, nidrāvaśam overpowered with sleep, upēyivān is affected.

O Sumantra, excited with joy on account of the (proposed) installation of Rama, the king did not have a wink of sleep all night. He is weary and overpowered with sleep.
tadgaccha tvaritaṅ sūta! rājaputraṅ yaśasvinam৷৷2.14.63৷৷

rāmamānaya bhadraṅ tē nātra kāryā vicāraṇā.


tat so, sūta O charioteer (Sumantra), tvaritam quickly, gaccha go, yaśasvinam illustrious, rājaputram prince, rāmam Rama, ānaya bring, tē to you, bhadram gentle, atra in this matter, vicāraṇā hesitation, na kāryā need not be done.

So, O Sumantra! quickly fetch the gentle, illustrious prince Rama. Let there be no hesitation in this matter.
sa manyamānaḥ kalyāṇaṅ hṛdayēna nananda ca৷৷2.14.64৷৷

nirjagāma ca samprītyā tvaritō rājaśāsanāt.


saḥ he, hṛdayēna at heart, kalyāṇam auspicious event, manyamānaḥ thinking, nananda ca felt happy, rājaśāsanāt at the royal command, tvaritaḥ swiftly, samprītyāḥ rejoiced, nirjagāma ca went away.

Thinking that an auspicious event will take place, he rejoiced at heart and in obedience to royal order, left at once.
sumantraścintayāmāsa tvaritaṅ cōditastayā৷৷2.14.65৷৷

vyaktaṅ rāmō.bhiṣēkārthamihāyāsyati dharmavit.


tayā by her, cōditaḥ urged, sumantraḥ Sumantra, cintayāmāsa thought over, dharmavit a knower of righteousness, rāmaḥ Rama, vyaktam definitely, abhiṣēkārtham for installation, iha here, āyāsyati he will come.

Urged by Kaikeyi, Sumantra thought 'Righteous Rama will definitely come here for the purpose of installation'.
iti sūtō matiṅ kṛtvā harṣēṇa mahatā৷৷vṛtaḥ৷৷2.14.66৷৷

nirjagāma mahābāhō rāghavasya didṛkṣayā.


sūtaḥ the charioteer, iti in this way, matiṅ kṛtvā having thought, mahatā harṣēṇa with great delight, vṛtaḥ filled, mahābāhōḥ one with mighty arms, rāghavasya Rama's, didṛkṣayā with an
intention to see Rama, nirjagāma came out.

So thought the charioteer and filled with great delight left (the inner apartment), eager to see the mighty-armed Rama.
sāgarahradasaṅkāśātsumantrō.ntaḥpurācchubhāt৷৷2.14.67৷৷

niṣkramya janasambādhaṅ dadarśa dvāramagrataḥ.


sumantraḥ Sumantra, sāgarahradasaṅkāśāt from a place which looked like deep waters of the sea, śubhāt auspicious, antaḥpurāt inner apartment, niṣkramya having departed, agrataḥ ahead of him, janasambādham thronged with people, dvāram gate, dadarśa saw.

Sumantra, departed from the auspcious inner apartment which looked like the deep waters of the sea and saw people thronging the gate.
tataḥ purastātsahasā vinirgatō mahīpatīndvāragatō vilōkayan.

dadarśa paurānvividhānmahādhanā nupasthitāndvāramupētya viṣṭhitān৷৷2.14.68৷৷


tataḥ then, sahasā immediately, purastāt forward, vinirgataḥ moving, dvāragataḥ having reached the gate, vilōkayan seeing, dvāram gate, upētya having approached, viṣṭhitān waiting, mahīpatīn kings, upasthitān having arrived, mahādhanān wealthy people, (vividhān) paurān citizens, dadarśa beheld.

Then Sumantra hastened towards the gate where he saw kings, wealthy people and citizens who had already arrived and waiting there.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē caturdaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fourteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
