[Dasaratha commands Sumantra to bring Rama]

tē tu tāṅ rajanīmuṣya brāhmaṇā vēdapāragāḥ.

upatasthurupasthānaṅ saha rājapurōhitāḥ৷৷2.15.1৷৷


vēdapāragā: well-versed in the Vedas, tē those, brāmhaṇā: brahmins, tāṅ rajanīm that night, uṣya after staying, saharājapurōhitā: along with royal priests, upasthānam to the pavilion (for consecration ceremony), upatasthu: assembled.

The brahmins well-versed in the Vedas stayed waiting all night and assembled at the pavilion (for the consecration ceremony) along with royal priests.
amātyā balamukhyāśca mukhyā yē nigamasya ca.

rāghavasyābhiṣēkārthē priyamāṇāstu saṅgatāḥ৷৷2.15.2৷৷


amātyā: ministers, balamukhyāśca army chiefs, yē nigamasya mukhyāḥ chiefs of the merchants' associations, rāghavasya of Rama, abhiṣēkārthē for the consecration, priyamāṇā: brimming with joy, saṅgatā: assembled.

For the consecration of the scion of the Raghu race (Rama), ministers, army chiefs and chiefs of merchants' associations assembled, brimming with joy.
uditē vimalē sūryē puṣyē cābhyāgatē.hani.

lagnē karkaṭakē prāptē janma rāmasya ca sthitē৷৷2.15.3৷৷

abhiṣēkāya rāmasya dvijēndrairupakalpitam.


vimalē bright, sūryē Sun, uditē having arisen, ahani during day , puṣyē ca when Pushya star, abhyāgatē was ascendent, rāmasya Rama's, janma sthitē constellation at the time of birth,
karkaṭakalagnē ascension of karkataka lagna, prāptē had come, rāmasya Rama's, abhiṣēkāya for the consecration, dvijēndrai: by the best of brahmins, upakalpitam was decided.

The best of brahmins had decided to perform the consecration ceremony after the bright Sun appeared in the sky when the Pushya star approached the karkataka lagna, which was the constellation at the time of Rama's birth.
kāñcanā jalakumbhāśca bhadrapīṭhaṅ svalaṅkṛtam৷৷2.15,4৷৷

rathaḥ ca samyagāstīrṇō bhāsvatā vyāghracarmaṇā.


kāñcanā: golden, jalakumbhāśca jars filled with water, svalaṅkṛtam well-decorated, bhadrapīṭham throne, bhāsvatā by a bright, vyāghracarmaṇā by the tiger skin, samyak properly, āstīrṇa: spread, rathaḥ ca chariot also, (bhānti are shining.)

Golden jars filled with water, the well-decorated throne and a chariot spread well with bright tiger-skin (were kept ready).
gaṅgāyamunayōḥpuṇyātsaṅgamādāhṛtaṅ jalam৷৷2.15.5৷৷

yāścānyā ssaritaḥ puṇyā hradāḥ kūpā ssarāṅsi ca.

prāgvāhāścōrdhvavāhāśca tiryagvāhā ssamāhitāḥ৷৷2.15.6৷৷

tābhyaścaivāhṛtaṅ tōyaṅ samudrēbhyaśca sarvaśaḥ.


puṇyāt from sacred, gaṅgāyamunayō: saṅgamāt from the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, puṇyā: holy, anyā: other, yā:sarita: streams, hradā: ponds, kūpā: wells, sarāṅsi ca lakes as well, āhṛtam brought, jalam water, prāgvāhā: flowing eastwards, ūrdhvavāhā: flowing upwards, tiryagvāhā: flowing zigzag, samāhitā: joined together, tābhya: ca from them also, sarvaśa: from all directions, samudrēbhya: from all seas, āhṛtam has been collected, tōyam water.

Water had been fetched from the sacred confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, from other holy streams, wells, ponds and lakes, from rivers flowing eastward, westward, and zigzag, from rivers from all directions joined together. And from all the seas.
salājāḥ kṣīribhiśchannā ghaṭāḥ kāñcanarājatāḥ৷৷2.15.7৷৷

padmōtpalayutā bhānti pūrṇāḥ paramavāriṇā.


salājā: with puffed corn, kṣīribhi: leaves from trees rich in sap, channā: covered, padmōtpalayutā: with lotuses and waterlilies, paramavāriṇā holy water, pūrṇā: filled with, kāñcanarājatā: made of gold and silver, ghaṭā: vessels, bhānti are shining.

Gold and silver vessels filled with holy water and puffed corn, adorned with lotuses, water lilies and leaves from trees rich in sap shone.
kṣaudraṅ dadhi ghṛtaṅ lājā darbhā ssumanasaḥ payaḥ৷৷2.15.8৷৷

vēśyāścaiva śubhācārā ssarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ.


kṣaudram honey, dadhi curds, ghṛtam ghee, lājā: puffed grain, darbhā: darbha grass, sumanasa: flowers, paya: milk, śubhācārā: well-mannered, sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā: adorned with all types of ornaments, vēśyā: ca ēva courtesans as well.

Honey, curd, ghee, puffed grain, darbha grass, flowers and milk were arranged. Well-mannered courtesans adorned with all kinds of ornaments (stood in position).
candrāṅśuvikacaprakhyaṅ kāñcanaṅ ratnabhūṣitam৷৷2.15.9৷৷

sajjaṅ tiṣṭhati rāmasya vālavyajanamuttamam.


candrāṅśuvikacaprakhyam resembling diffused rays of the moon, kāñcanam made of gold, ratnabhūṣitam adorned with gems, rāmasya for Rama, uttamam excellent, vālavyajanam a fan made of yak's tail, sajjaṅ tiṣṭhati is held in readiness.

An excellent fan of yak's tail with a staff of gold studded with gems looking like diffused moon-beams was kept ready.
candramaṇḍalasaṅkāśamātapatraṅ ca pāṇḍuram৷৷2.15.10৷৷

sajjaṅ dyutikaraṅ śrīmadabhiṣēkapuraskṛtam.


candramaṇḍalasaṅkāśam resembling the Moon's orb, pāṇḍuram pale white, dyutikaram lustrous like the pole star abhiṣēkapuraskṛtam to be placed in front of the coronation pavilion, śrīmat majestic, ātapatraṅ umbrella, sajjam is arranged.

A lustrous pale white umbrella resembling the Moon's orb or the pole star was kept in front of the coronation pavilion.
pāṇḍuraśca vṛṣassajjaḥ pāṇḍurō.śvaśca susthitaḥ৷৷2.15.11৷৷

prasṛtaśca gajaḥśrīmānaupavāhyaḥ pratīkṣatē.


pāṇḍura: pale white, vṛṣa: bull, sajja: is kept ready, aśva:ca horse also, susthita: in state, prasṛta: flowing ichor (from its temples), śrīmān majestic, aupavāhya: worthy of ride by a king, gaja: ca elephant also, pratīkṣatē is awaiting.

A bull and a horse both pale white and a majestic elephant in rut worthy of royal ride stood waiting.
aṣṭau ca kanyā māṅgalyā ssarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ৷৷2.15.12৷৷

vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi vandinaśca tathā.parē.


sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā: adorned with all kinds of ornament, māṅgalyā: auspicious, aṣṭau eight, kanyā:unmarried girls, sarvāṇi all sorts of, vāditrāṇi musical instruments, vandina: ca also panegyrists, tathā and, parē others (stood waiting).

Eight auspicious maidens adorned with all types of ornaments, all sorts of musical instruments, panegyrists and others (were in waiting).
ikṣvākūṇāṅ yathā rājyē saṅbhriyētābhiṣēcanam৷৷2.15.13৷৷

tathājātīyamādāya rājaputrābhiṣēcanam.

tē rājavacanāttatra samavētāmahīpatim৷৷2.15.14৷৷

apaśyantō.bruvan kō nu rājñō naḥ prativēdayēt.

na paśyāmaśca rājānamuditaśca divākaraḥ৷৷2.15.15৷৷

yauvarājyābhiṣēkaśca sajjō rāmasya dhīmataḥ.


ikṣvākūṇām of the descendants of the Ikshvakus, rājyē in the kingdom, abhiṣēcanam consecration, yathā as, saṅbhriyēt might have been arranged, tathā jātīyam pertaining to that race, rājaputrābhiṣēcanam for the consecration of the prince, ādāya having brought, rājavacanāt in accordance with the order of the king, tatra there, samavētā: having assembled, tē they, mahīpatim to the king, apaśyanta: not beholding, na: about us, ka: nu who indeed, rājña: to the king, prativēdayēt inform, abruvan said, rājānam to the king, na ca paśyāma: (we) do not see, divākara: ca sun also, udita: has risen, dhīmata: sagacious, rāmasya Rama's, yauvarājyābhiṣēka: ca consecration as prince regent, sajja: is ready.

Just as articles necessary for the consecration of the descendants of the Ikshvakus, are customarily arranged in the kingdom, in the same way things were arranged for the coronation of the prince belonging to that race. All those who had assembled there in response to the order of the king could not see him and so they said to themselves 'Who will inform the king of our arrival. Everything is kept ready for consecration of the sagacious Rama as prince regent. The Sun has risen. But we do not find the king'.
iti tēṣu bruvāṇēṣu sārvabhaumān mahīpatīn৷৷2.15.16৷৷

abravīttānidaṅ sarvānsumantrō rājasatkṛtaḥ.


tēṣu while they, iti thus, bruvāṇēṣu were speaking, rājasatkṛta: the king's confidant, sumantra: Sumantra, tān them, sarvān all, sārvabhaumān sovereigns, mahīpatīn kings, idam this word, abravīt said.

While the sovereign monarchs who hailed from different parts of the earth were thus talking Sumantra the king's confidant said:
rāmaṅ rājñō niyōgēna tvarayā prasthitō.smyaham৷৷2.15.17৷৷

pūjyā rājñō bhavantastu rāmasya ca viśēṣataḥ.


aham I, rājña: king's, niyōgēna by command, rāmam Rama, tvarayā quickly, prasthita: asmi I am departing, bhavanta: tu as for all of you, rājña: to the king, pūjyā: venerable, viśēṣata: especially, rāmasya ca for Rama also.

In obedience to the king's command I am hurrying for Rama. All of you are honourable to king Dasaratha, especially to Rama.
ayaṅ pṛcchāmi vacanātsukhamāyuṣmatāmaham৷৷2.15.18৷৷

rājñaḥ saṅprati buddhasya yaccāgamanakāraṇam.


ayam aham such I am, āyuṣmatām long-lived, vacanāt by your words, saṅprati buddhasya to him now awake, rājña: king's, sukham welfare, āgamanakāraṇaṅ the reason for his coming, pṛcchāmi I shall ask.

On your behalf I shall enquire from the king who is awake now about his welfare and the reason for calling me here.
ityuktvā.ntaḥ puradvāramājagāma purāṇavit৷৷2.15.19৷৷

sadā.saktaṅ ca tadvēśma sumantraḥ pravivēśa ha.


purāṇavit one who is well-versed in history and tradition, sumantra: Sumantra, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, anta:puradvāram entrance to the inner apartment, ājagāma approached, sadā always, saktam remains closed, tat that, vēśma palace, pravivēśa ha entered.

Having said so, Sumantra who was versed in history and tradition approached the inner apartment which always remains closed.
tuṣṭāvāsya tadā vaṅśaṅ praviśya sa viśāṅpatēḥ৷৷2.15.20৷৷

śayanīyaṅ narēndrasya tadā৷৷sādya vyatiṣṭhata.


tadā then, sa: he, praviśya having entered, asya this, viśāṅpatē: king's, vaṅśam royal dynasty, tuṣṭāva extoled, narēndrasya king's, tat śayanīyam sleeping apartment, āsādya having approached, vyatiṣṭhata stood there.

Entering the king's inner apartment, he began extoling the virtues of the royal dynasty, and stood there as he approached the king's bed-chamber.
sō.tyāsādya tu tadvēśma tiraskaraṇimantarā৷৷2.15.21৷৷

āśīrbhirguṇayuktābhi rabhituṣṭāva rāghavam.


sa: he, tat vēśma that bed-chamber, tiraskariṇam antarā behind the screen, āsādya having approached, guṇayuktābhi: with virtues, aśīrbhi: with blessings, rāghavam son of Raghus dynasty (Dasaratha), abhituṣṭāva praised.

Having approached the king's bed-chamber Sumatra stood behind the screen, singing his glory and seeking the blessings (of God) on this son of Raghus dynasty.
sōmasūryau ca kākutstha! śivavaiśravaṇāvapi৷৷2.15.22৷৷

varuṇaścāgnirindraśca vijayaṅ pradiśantu tē.


kākutstha O scion of the Kakutsthas (Dasaratha), sōmasūryau Moon and Sun, śivavaiśravaṇau api Siva and Kubera also, varuṇa: Varuna, agni: Agni, indra: Indra, tē to you, vijayam victory, pradiśantu let them grant.

O scion of the kakutsthas (Dasaratha), may Moon and Sun, Siva and Kubera, Varuna, Agni and Indra grant you victory!
gatā bhagavatī rātrirahaḥ śivamupasthitam৷৷2.15.23৷৷

buddhyasva nṛpaśārdūla! kuru kāryamanantaram.


bhagavatī holy, rātri: night, gatā has passed, śivam auspicious, aha: day, upasthitam has
arrived, nṛpaśārdula O tiger among kings, buddhyasva may wake up, anantaram later, kāryam acts, kuru perform.

The holy night has passed and the auspicious day has arrived. O tiger among kings, awaken and attend to your duties.
brāhmaṇā balamukhyāśca naigamāścāgatā nṛpa!৷৷2.15.24৷৷

darśanaṅ tē.bhikāṅkṣantē pratibudhyasva rāghava.


rāghava born in the family of Raghu, nṛpa O king, brāhmaṇā: brahmins, balamukhyā: ca army commanders, naigamā: ca merchants also, āgatā: have arrived, darśanam your audience, (abhi) kāṅkṣantē request, pratibudhyasva may awaken.

O scion of the Raghu dynasty! brahmins, army commanders and merchants have arrived and they beseech your audience. Please awake.
stuvantaṅ taṅ tadā sūtaṅ sumantraṅ mantrakōvidam৷৷2.15.25৷৷

pratibudhya tatō rājā idaṅ vacanamabravīt.


tata: thereafter, rājā king, pratibudhya being awake, tadā then, stuvantam extoling, tam mantrakōvidam expert counseller, sūtam charioteer, sumaṅtram to Sumantra, idaṅ vacanam this word, abravīt said.

Dasaratha waking up saw the charioteer and expert counsellor Sumantra extoling him, and said:
rāmamānaya sūtēti yadasyabhihitō.nayā৷৷2.15.26৷৷

kimidaṅ kāraṇaṅ yēna mamājñā pratihanyatē.


sūta O charioteer, rāmam Rama, ānaya bring, iti thus, anayā by her, yat abhihita: asi you have been told, yēna why, mama my, ājñā command, pratihanyatē has been disregarded, idaṅ
kāraṇaṅ kim what is the reason?

You had been asked by her (Kaikeyi) to bring Rama here. What is the reason the command is disregarded?
na caiva saṅprasuptō.hamānayēhāśu rāghavam৷৷2.15.27৷৷

iti rājā daśaratha ssūtaṅ tatrānvaśātpunaḥ.


aham I, na ca ēva saṅprasupta: I have not slept, āśu instantly, rāghavam to son of the Raghus (Rama), iha here, ānaya bring, iti thus, rājā daśaratha: king Dasaratha, tatra there, sūtam to the charioteer, puna: again, anvaśāt ordered.

I did not sleep (last night). Bring Rama here at once, said king Dasaratha to the charioteer again.
sa rājavacanaṅ śrutvā śirasā pratipūjya tam৷৷2.15.28৷৷

nirjagāma nṛpāvāsānmanyamānaḥ priyaṅ mahat.


sa: he, rājavacanam words of the king, śrutvā having heard, tam him, śirasā bowing with his head down, pratipūjya offering salutations, mahat great, priyam happy, manyamāna: while reflecting, nṛpāvāsāt from the kings's palace, nirjagāma went out.

At these words of the king, he offered his salutations by bowing his head and left the king's apartment, reflecting on the great happy event.
prasannō rājamārgaṅ ca patākādhvajaśōbhitam৷৷2.15.29৷৷

hṛṣṭaḥ pramudita ssūtō jagāmāśu vilōkayan.


sūta: charioteer, prasanna: cheerful, patākādhvajaśōbhitam bedecked with pennants and banners, rājamārgaṅ ca highway also, vilōkayan seeing, hṛṣṭa: rejoiced, pramudita: delighted, jagāma went.

The charioteer left cheerfully, happily looking at the highway bedecked with pennants
and banners.
sa sūtastatra śuśrāva rāmādhikaraṇāḥ kathāḥ৷৷2.15.30৷৷

abhiṣēcanasaṅyuktāssarvalōkasya hṛṣṭavat.


sa: sūta: that charioteer, tatra there, hṛṣṭavat happy, sarvalōkasya of all the citizens, abhiṣēcanasaṅyuktā: relating to installation, rāmādhikaraṇā: in connection with Rama, kathā: conversation, śruśrāva heard.

The charioteer heard the conversation relating to Rama and his consecration among the happy citizens.
tatō dadarśa ruciraṅ kailāsaśikharaprabham৷৷2.15.31৷৷

rāmavēśma sumantrastu śakravēśmasamaprabham.


tata: thereafter, sumantra: tu Sumantra on his part, kailāsaśikharaprabham in lustre comparable to the peak of Kailasa, śakravēśmasamaprabham resembling in splendour the abode of Indra, ruciram lovely, rāmavēśma palace of Rama, dadarśa beheld.

Thereafter, Sumantra beheld the beautiful palace of Rama, resembling the abode of Indra or the peak of Kailasa in its splendour.
mahākavāṭavihitaṅ vitardiśataśōbhitam৷৷2.15.32৷৷

kāñcanapratimaikāgraṅ maṇividrumatōraṇam.

śāradābhraghanaprakhyaṅ dīptaṅ mēruguhōpamam৷৷2.15.33৷৷

maṇibhirvaramālyānāṅ samuhadbhiralaṅkṛtam.

muktāmaṇibhirākīrṇaṅ candanāgarūdhūpitam৷৷2.15.34৷৷

gandhānmanōjñān visṛjaddārduraṅ śikharaṅ yathā.

sārasaiśca mayūraiśca vinadadbhirvirājitam৷৷2.15.35৷৷

sukṛtēhāmṛgākīrṇaṅ sukīrṇaṅ bhaktibhistathā.

manaścakṣuśca bhūtānāmādadattigmatējasā৷৷2.15.36৷৷

candrabhāskarasaṅkāśaṅ kubērabhavanōpamam.

mahēndradhāmapratimaṅ nānāpakṣisamākulam৷৷2.15.37৷৷

mēruśṛṅgasamaṅ sūtō rāmavēśma dadarśa ha.

upasthitaiḥsamākīrṇaṅ janairañjalikāribhiḥ৷৷2.15.38৷৷

upādāya samākrāntaistathā jānapadairjanaiḥ.

rāmābhiṣēkasumukhairunmukhaissamalaṅkṛtam৷৷2.15.39৷৷

mahāmēghasamaprakhyamudagraṅ suvibhūṣitam.

nānāratnasamākīrṇaṅ kubjakairātakāvṛtam৷৷2.15.40৷৷


sūta: the charioteer, mahākavāṭavihitam closed with two heavy panels of doors, vitardiśataśōbhitam adorned with hundreds of galleries, kāñcanapratimaikāgram having a peak on which were mounted golden idols, maṇividrumatōraṇam arches studded with diamonds and pearls, śāradābhraghanaprakhyam as bright as dense autumnal clouds, dīptam shining, mēruguhōpamam like a cave of mount Meru, sumahadbhi: extremely, varamālyānām excellent garlands, maṇibha: with diamonds, alaṅkṛtam ornamented, muktāmaṇibhi: with pearls and gems, ākīrṇam strewn with, candanāgarudhūpitam decorated with sandal and aloe wood, dārduram from mount Dardura, śikharaṅ yathā like its peak, manōjñān captivating the mind, gandhān fragrance, visṛjat emitting, vinadadbhiḥ singing sweetly, sārasai: Sarasas, mayūraiśca peacocks, virājitam shone, sukṛtēhāmṛgākīrṇam full of skilfully carved images of deer, tathā and, bhaktibhi: embellishments, sukīrṇam well-spread, tigmatējasā with brilliant splendour, bhūtānām living beings, mana: mind, cakṣuśca the eye, ādadat captivated, candrabhāskarasaṅkāśam as Sun and Moon, kubērabhavanōpam similar to the abode of Kubera, mahēndradhāmapratimam reflected image of the abode of Mahendra, nānāpakṣisamākulam crowded with birds of various kinds, mēruśṛṅgasamam (tall) like the peak of Mount Meru, upasthitai: having arrived, añjalikāribhi: with joined palms, janai: by people, samākīrṇam filled with, tathā and, upādāya with gifts, samākrāntai: thronged (that palace) rāmābhiṣēkasumukhai: eager to see Rama's coronation, unmukhai: eager, jānapadai: janai: by villagers, alaṅkṛtam decorated, mahāmēghasamaprakhyam looking like the vast cloud, udagram lofty, suvibhūṣitam well-decked, nānāratnasamākīrṇam filled with various gems, kubjakairātakāvṛtam crowded with hunchbacks and hunters, rāmavēśma palace of Rama, dadarśa ha beheld.

The charioteer (Sumantra) beheld Rama's palace closed with two heavy-panelled doors. Adorned with hundreds of galleries, it had a peak mounted with golden idols. The arches were studded with different gems and corals. Bright like dense autumnal cloud, it shone like the cave of mount Meru. It was ornamented with excellent garlands and precious diamonds. Pearls were strewn around. Decorated with sandal and aloe wood, it emitted, like the peak of mount Dardura, captivating fragrance৷৷ Sarasas and peacocks were singing sweetly. The palace was full of skilfully carved images of deer and other embellishments. It attracted the minds and the eyes of all living beings with brilliant splendour. Resplendent like the Sun and the Moon, it looked like the abode of Kubera and a reflected image of the abode of Mahendra. It was crowded with birds of various kinds. In height it was equal to the peak of mount Meru. Villagers thronged the palace with gifts, eagerly waiting with folded hands to see the spectacle of Rama's coronation. Lofty, it looked like a vast cloud. Well-decked and filled with various gems, it was crowded with hunchbacks and kiratas (hunters) too.
sa vājiyuktēna rathēna sārathiḥ

narākulaṅ rājakulaṅ virājayan.

varūthinā rāmagṛhābhipātinā

purasya sarvasya manāṅsi harṣayan৷৷2.15.41৷৷


sa: that, sārathi: charioteer, rāmagṛhābhipātinā going towards the palace of Rama, varūthinā (covered) with a wooden fender (as a defence against collision), vājiyuktēna harnessed with horses, rathēna by a chariot, narākulaṅ (samākulam) crowded with people, rājakulam royal palace, virājayan appearing, sarvasya all, purasya city's, manāṅsi minds, harṣayan delighting.

Mounted on a chariot, attached with a fender and driven by horses, the charioteer
advanced towards the royal palace of Rama delighting the minds of the people of the city.
tatassamāsādya mahādhanaṅ mahat

prahṛṣṭarōmā sa babhūba sārathiḥ.

mṛrgairmayūraiśca samākulōlbaṇaṅ

gṛhaṅ varārhasya śacīpatēriva৷৷2.15.42৷৷


tata: thereafter, sa: sārathi: that charioteer, mahādhanam opulent, mahat magnificent, mṛgai: with deer, mayūraiśca with peacocks, samākulōlbaṇam with pervading beauty, śacīpatē: iva like that of the consort of Sachi, Indra, varārhasya of a befitting man, gṛhaṅ palace, samāsādya having reached, prahṛṣṭarōmā babhūva was thrilled.

Having reached the palace abounding in deer and peacocks which resembled the magnificent and opulent abode of Indra, the charioteer was thrilled at the all-pervading beauty of the place befitting Rama.
sa tatra kailāsanibhāssvalaṅkṛtāḥ

praviśya kakṣyāstridaśālayōpamāḥ.

priyānvarān rāmamatē sthitān bahūn

vyapōhya śuddhāntamupasthitō rathī৷৷2.15.43৷৷


sa: that, rathī charioteer, tatra there, kailāsanibhā: similar to Kailasa, svalaṅkṛtā: well-decorated, tridaśālayōpamā: like the abode of celestials, kakṣyā: courtyards, praviśya having entered, rāmamatē close to Rama's heart, sthitān the waiting ones, bahūn many, varān best, priyān friends, vyapōhya passing through, śuddhāntam private apartment, upasthita: approached.

Having entered the well-decorated palace which was (lofty) like Kailasa, he crossed the courtyards comparable to the abode of the celestials, passed through the many bosom friends of Rama and entered the private apartment.
sa tatra śuśrāva ca harṣayuktāḥ

rāmābhiṣēkārthakṛtā janānām.

narēndrasūnōrabhimaṅgalārthāḥ

sarvasya lōkasya giraḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ৷৷2.15.44৷৷


tatra there, sa: he, janānām people's, rāmābhiṣēkārthakṛtā: acts done for the enthronement of Rama, harṣayuktā: happy, narēndrasūnō: prince's (Rama's), abhimaṅgalārthā: for his well-being, sarvasya from everyone, lōkasya people's, prahṛṣṭa: full of delight, gira: words, śuśrāva heard.

There he heard the happy words spoken by people about the enthronement of prince Rama and his future well-being.
mahēndrasadmapratimaṅ tu vēśma

rāmasya ramyaṅ mṛgapakṣi juṣṭam.

dadarśa mērōriva śruṅgamuccaṅ

vibhrājamānaṅ prabhayā sumantraḥ৷৷2.15.45৷৷


sumantra: Sumantra, mahēndrasadmapratimam resembling the abode of Indra, mṛgapakṣijuṣṭam filled with animals and birds, mērō: mount Meru's, uccaṅ high, śṛṅgam iva like a summit, prabhayā with splendour, vibhrajamānam shining, ramyam beautiful, rāmasya vēśma Rama's palace, dadarśa beheld.

Sumantra beheld Rama's palace which resembled the high summit of mount Meru shining with splendour. Filled with animals and birds, if looked like the abode of Indra.
upasthitairañjalikārakaiśca

sōpāyanairjānapadairjanaiśca.

kōṭyā parārdhaiśca vimuktayānaiḥ

samākulaṅ dvārapathaṅ dadarśa৷৷2.15.46৷৷


upasthitai: by men present, añjali kārakaiśca (añjali kāribhiśca) paying obeisance with folded palms, sōpāyanai: (with their hands ) full of gifts, vimuktayānai: having left their chariots, kōṭyā in crores of, parārdhaiśca billions, jānapadai: villagers, janaiśca citizens from towns, samākulaṅ thronged, dvārapathaṅ gateway, dadarśa beheld.

He saw villagers and others in crores and parardhas, leaving their chariots and thronging the gateway, (some) paying obeisance with folded palms and (some) carrying gifts in their hands.
tatō mahāmēghamahīdharābhaṅ

prabhinnamatyaṅkuśamatyasahyam.

rāmaupavāhyaṅ ruciraṅ dadarśa

śatruñjayaṅ nāgamudagrakāyam৷৷2.15.47৷৷


tata: thereafter, mahāmēghamahīdharābham resembling a great cloud or a vast mountain, prabhinnam ichor flowing from its temples, atyaṅkuśam without caring for the goad, asahyam intolerant, udagrakāyam having a huge body, rāmaupavāhyam fit to be mounted by Rama, ruciram beautiful, śatrṛñjayam by name Satrunjaya, nāgam elephant, dadarśa beheld.

He beheld a beautiful elephant named Satrunjaya with a huge body on which Rama was to mount. It looked like a vast mountain or a huge cloud. With ichor flowing from his temples and without caring for the goad, the elephant was intolerant.
svalaṅkṛtān sāśvarathān sakuñjarā-

namātya mukhyāṅśca dadarśa vallabhān.

vyapōhya sūtassahitān samantataḥ

samṛddhamantaḥpuramāvivēśa ha৷৷2.15.48৷৷


svalaṅṅkṛtān well-adorned, sāśvarathān with horses and chariots, sakuñjarān with elephants, vallabhān dear to the king, amātyamukhyāṅśca important ministers also, dadarśa saw, sūta: charioteer, samantata: on all sides, sahitān assembled, vyapōhya getting out of the way, samṛddham glorious, anta:puram private apartment, āvivēśa entered.

Important ministers who were dear to the king and well-adorned arrived there on their horses, chariots and elephants. Sumantra finding his way through the crowd of the people who assembled on all sides, entered the glorious private apartment of Rama.
tadandrikūṭācalamēghasannibhaṅ

mahāvimānōpamavēśmasaṅyutam.

avāryamāṇaḥ pravivēśa sārathiḥ

prabhūtaratnaṅ makarō yathārṇavam৷৷2.15.49৷৷


tata: afterwards, sārathi: charioteer, adrikūṭācalamēghasannibham similar to motionless cloud over a mountain peak, mahāvimānōpamavēśmasaṅyutam surrounded by splendid rooms, makara: crocodile, prevented, pravivēśa entered.

The palace looked like a mountain peak covered by a cloud and a great vimana surrounded by splendid apartments. The charioteer entered the palace unobstructed like a crocodile entering the ocean bristling with many gems.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē pañcadaśaḥsargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fifteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
