[Sumantra reaches Rama's palace and conveys to him Dasaratha's message-Rama accompanied by Lakshmana proceeds to his father's palace--- comments of men and women on his way to the king.]

tadantaḥpuradvāraṅ samatītya janākulam.

praviviktāṅ tataḥ kakṣyāmāsasāda purāṇavit৷৷2.16.1৷৷

prāsakārmukabibhradbhiryuvabhirmṛṣṭakuṇḍalaiḥ.

apramādibhirēkāgrai ssvanuraktairadhiṣṭhitām৷৷2.16.2৷৷


purāṇavit conversant with ancient traditions, saḥ he (Sumantra), janākulaṅ tad crowded with people, antaḥpuradvāram the door of the inner apartment, samatītya having passed through, tataḥ after that, prāsakārmukabibhradbhiḥ carrying spears and bows, mṛṣṭakuṅḍalaiḥ wearing shining ear -rings, apramādibhiḥ alert, ēkāgraiḥ attentive, svanuraktai: with utmost devotion (to the king), yuvabhiḥ by young men, adhiṣṭhitām guarding, praviviktām sparsely crowded, kakṣyām courtyard, āsasāda reached.

Sumantra, who was conversant with ancient traditions, passed through the entrance of the inner apartment full of people and reached the sparsely crowded courtyard. There alert, loyal young men were attentively guarding the frontyard, armed with spears and bows and wearing shining ear-rings.
tadantaḥpuradvāraṅ samatītya janākulam.

Sumantra, who was conversant with ancient traditions, passed through the entrance of the inner apartment full of people and reached the sparsely crowded courtyard. There alert, loyal young men were attentively guarding the frontyard, armed with spears and bows and wearing shining ear-rings.
tatra kāṣāyiṇō vṛddhān vētrapāṇīn svalaṅkṛtān.

dadarśa viṣṭhitān dvāri stryadhyakṣānsusamāhitān৷৷2.16.3৷৷


tatra there, kāṣāyiṇaḥ wearing orange robes, vṛddhān the aged, vētrapāṇīn canes in hands, svalaṅkṛtān well-ornamented, susamāhitān with utmost concentation, dvāri at the entrance, viṣṭhitān appointed, stryadhyakṣān security staff for women's apartments, dadarśa saw.

He saw aged people appointed as security staff for women's apartments. They were
well-adorned, dressed in orange robes and with rapt attention stood holding staff in their hands.
tē samīkṣya samāyāntaṅ rāmapriyacikīrṣavaḥ.

sahasōtpatitāssarvē svāsanēbhyassasambhramāḥ৷৷2.16.4৷৷


rāmapriyacikīrṣavaḥ wishing the welfare of Rama, tē sarvē all of them, samāyāntam arriving, samīkṣya having seen, sasaṅbhramāḥ in great haste, sahasā quickly, āsanēbhyaḥ from their seats, utpatitāḥ rose.

On seeing (Sumantra) arriving, all of them, well-wishers to Rama, quickly rose from their seats.
tānuvāca vinītātmā sūtaputraḥ pradakṣiṇaḥ.

kṣipramākhyāta rāmāya sumaṅntrō dvāri tiṣṭhati৷৷2.16.5৷৷


vinītātmā humble, sūtaputraḥ to charioteer, pradakṣiṇaḥ extremely courteous, tān to them, uvāca said, sumantra: Sumantra, dvāri at the entrance, tiṣṭhati is waiting, kṣipraṅ at once, rāmāya to Rama, ākhyāta inform
.
Humble and extremely courteous charioteer (to the guards) said, Inform Rama at once that Sumantra is waiting at the entrance.
tē rāmamupasaṅgamya bhartuḥ priyacikīrṣavaḥ.

sahabhāryāya rāmāya kṣipramēvābhicakṣirē৷৷2.16.6৷৷


bhartuḥ of the master, priyacikīrṣavaḥ desirous of doing good, tē they, rāmam Rama, upasaṅgamya having approached, kṣipramēva speedily, sahabhāryāya in the company of his wife, rāmāya to Rama, ābhicakṣirē informed.

Always dedicated to the well-being of their master, they approached Rama who was in the company of Sita. And informed him:
prativēditamājñāya sūtamabhyantaraṅ pituḥ.

tatraivānāyayāmāsa rāghavapriyakāmyayā৷৷2.16.7৷৷


rāghavaḥ scion of the Raghus (Rama), pituḥ of his father, abhyantaram intimate, prativēditam informed by them, sūtam to the charioteer, ājñāya having come to know, priyakāmyayā desirous of pleasing, tatraiva to that place only, ānāyayāmāsa was brought in.

Coming to know that Sumantra who is intimate to his father had arrived, Rama, in order to please him, commanded that he be escorted to that very place.
taṅ vaiśravaṇasaṅkāśamupaviṣṭaṅ svalaṅkṛtam.

dadarśa sūtaḥ paryyaṅkē sauvarṇē sōttaracchadē৷৷2.16.8৷৷

varāharudhirābhēṇa śucinā ca sugandhinā.

anuliptaṅ parārdhyēna candanēna parantapam৷৷2.16.9৷৷

sthitayā pārśvataścāpi vālavyajanahastayā.

upētaṅ sītayābhūyaścitrayā śaśinaṅ yathā৷৷2.16.10৷৷


vaiśravaṇasaṅkāśam resembling Kubera (god of wealth), svalaṅkṛtaṅ richly-covered, varāharudhirābhēṇa red as the blood of a hog, śucinā of pure, sugandhinā with sweet fragrance, parārdhyēna excellent, candanēna with sandalpaste, anuliptam anointed, parantapam subduer of enemies, citrayā (united) with star Chitra, śaśinaṅ yathā like the Moon, pārśvataḥ by the side of, sthitayā standing, vālavyajanahastayā a fan of yak's tail in hand, sītayā cāpi Sita also, upētam was present, sōttaracchadē richly covered, sauvarṇē golden, paryaṅkē in the couch, upaviṣṭam sitting, tam to him (Rama), sūtaḥ charioteer (Sumantra), dadarśa beheld.

Sumantra beheld Rama, who resembled Kubera. Rama was sitting on a richly-covered golden couch, well-adorned and anointed with precious, pure, fragrant red sandalpaste the colour of which appeared like the blood of a hog. With Sita standing by his side with a fan of yak's tail in her hand Rama, the tormentor of foes,
looked like the Moon united with (the star) Chitra.
taṅ tapantamivādityamupapannaṅ svatējasā.

vavandē varadaṅ vandī vinayajñō vinītavat৷৷2.16.11৷৷


vinayajñaḥ one who knows the art of modesty, vandī panegyrist (Sumantra), vinītavat with humility, svatējasā with his own effulgence, upapannam secured, tapantam shining, ādityam iva like the Sun, varadam conferor of boons, tam that Rama, vavandē made reverential salutation.

Sumantra who knew the art of modesty, made humble, reverential salutation to Rama the granter of boons, shining like the Sun with his own effulgence.
prāñjalissumukhaṅ dṛṣṭvā vihāraśayanāsanē.

rājaputramuvācēdaṅ sumantrō rājasatkṛtaḥ৷৷2.16.12৷৷


rājasatkṛtaḥ honoured by the king (Dasaratha), sumantraḥ Sumantra, vihāraśayanāsanē on a couch , sumukham charming countenance, rājaputram prince, dṛṣṭvā having seen, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, idam these words, uvāca said.

On seeing Rama of charming countenance relaxing on a couch, Sumantra, honourable to the king (Dasaratha) said these words with folded palms.
kauśalyāsuprajā rāma! pitā tvāṅ draṣṭumicchati.

mahiṣyā saha kaikēyyā gamyatāṅ tatra mā ciram৷৷2.16.13৷৷


kauśalyāsuprajāḥ worthy son of Kausalya, rāmaḥ O Rama, mahiṣyā queen, kaikēyyā saha along with Kaikeyi, pitā father, tvām you, draṣṭum to see, icchati wishes, tatra there, gamyatām you may go, mā ciram do not delay.

O Rama, worthy son of Kausalya, your father along with queen Kaikeyi desires to see you.You may go there. Please do not delay.
ēvamuktastu saṅhṛṣṭō narasiṅhō mahādyutiḥ.

tatassammānayāmāsa sītāmidamuvāca ha৷৷2.16.14৷৷


tataḥ after that, ēvam thus, uktaḥ spoken, mahādyutiḥ of great lustre, narasiṅhaḥ lion among men, saṅhṛṣṭaḥ was immensely pleased, sammānayāmāsa honoured him, sītām to Sita, idam these words, uvāca ha also spoke.

Highly lustrous Rama ,the lion among men, when thus spoken to, was immensely pleased and extending due honour to him said to Sita:
dēvi! dēvaśca dēvī ca samāgamya madantarē.

mantrayētē dhṛvaṅ kiñcidabhiṣēcanasaṅhitam৷৷2.16.15৷৷


dēvi O devi (Sita), dēvaśca the king, dēvī ca also queen, samāgamya having met together, madantarē about me, abhiṣēcanasaṅhitam relating to the consecration, kiñcit something, mantrayētē are consulting, dhruvam is certain.

O Sita, I am sure the king and queen are discussing something relating to my consecration.
lakṣayitvā hyabhiprāyaṅ priyakāmā sudakṣiṇā.

sañcōdayati rājānaṅ madarthamasitēkṣaṇā৷৷2.16.16৷৷


asitēkṣaṇā dark-eyed, sudakṣiṇā highly favoured, priyakāmā desiring the welfare (of the king), abhiprāyam intention, lakṣayitvā having perceived, rājānam to the king, madartham for my purpose, sañcōdayati is urging.

Dark-eyed and highly favoured well-wisher of the king (Kaikeyi) is urging him for my sake in view of his intention.
sā prahṛṣṭā mahārājaṅ hitakāmānuvartinī.

jananī cārthakāmā mē kēkayādhipatēssutā৷৷2.16.17৷৷


kēkayādhipatēḥ sutā daughter of the king of Kekaya (Kaikeyi), jananī ca my mother also, sā she, prahṛṣṭā being extremely happy, hitakāmā desirous of (my) benefit, mahārājam to the king, anuvartinī following, mē my, arthakāmā seeks my well-being.

My mother, daughter of the king of Kekaya, knows the king's intention and, heppy to do me good, seeks my well-being.
diṣṭyā khalu mahārājō mahiṣyā priyayā saha.

sumantraṅ prāhiṇōddūtamarthakāmakaraṅ mama৷৷2.16.18৷৷


mahiṣyā the queen, priyayā saha with his dear wife, mahārājaḥ king, diṣṭyā fortunately, sumantram Sumantra, dūtam as messenger, mama my, arthakāmakaram accomplishing artha and kama, prāhiṇōt has sent.

It is our fortune that the king and his dear queen have sent Sumantra as messenger who is interested in my prosperity and pleasure.
yādṛśī pariṣattatra tādṛśō dūta āgataḥ.

dhruvamadyaiva māṅ rājā yauvarājyē.bhiṣēkṣyati৷৷2.16.19৷৷


tatra there, yādṛśī of which sort, pariṣat council, tādṛśaḥ like that, dūtaḥ messenger, āgataḥ has arrived, dhruvam assuredly, adyaiva this very day, rājā king, mām me, yauvarājyē as heir-apparent, abhiṣēkṣyati will consecrate.

There worthy of the council of the king and the queen, a befitting messenger has come. Assuredly the king will consecrate me as heir-apparent this very day.
hanta! śīghramitō gatvā drakṣyāmi ca mahīpatim.

saha tvaṅ parivārēṇa sukhamāsva ramasva ca৷৷2.16.20৷৷


hanta! what a joy!, itaḥ from here, śīghraṅ immediately, gatvā having gone, mahīpatim to the king,
drakṣyāmi ca shall see, tvam you, parivārēṇa saha along with attendants, sukham happily, āsva remain, ramasva ca rejoice.

I shall go from here immediately and see the king. Remain here happily and rejoice with your maids.
patisammānitā sītā bhartāramasitēkṣaṇā.

ādvāramanuvavrāja maṅgalānyabhidadhyuṣī৷৷2.16.21৷৷


patisammānitā highly esteemed by her husband, asitēkṣaṇā having dark eyes, sītā Sita, maṅgalāni auspicious events, abhidadhyuṣī reflecting, bhartāram husband, ādvāram up to the entrance, anuvavrāja followed.

Reflecting over the auspicious event, the dark-eyed Sita who is highly esteemed by her husband, followed him up to the entrance, (saying):
rājyaṅ dvijātibhirjuṣṭaṅ rājasūyābhiṣēcanam.

kartumarhati tē rājā vāsavasyēva lōkakṛt৷৷2.16.22৷৷


rājā the king (Dasaratha), dvijātibhiḥ by brahmins, juṣṭaṅ resorted to, rājasūyābhiṣēcanam 'Rajasuya' sacrifice at the time of consecration, rājyam kingdom, tē you, lōkakṛt the creater of the world (lord Brahma), vāsavasyēva like Indra, kartum to bestow, arhati deserves.

The king will bestow upon you, like the creator of the world (Brahma) bestowing on Indra, the kingdom served by brahmins who are fit to perform 'Rajasuya' sacrifice at the time of consecration.
dīkṣitaṅ vratasampannaṅ varājinadharaṅ śucim.

kuraṅgaśṛṅgapāṇiṅ ca paśyantī tvāṅ bhajāmyaham৷৷2.16.23৷৷


dīkṣitam having been initiated, vratasampannam engaged in the observance of the vows, varājinadharam wearing excellent deer-skin, śucim pure, kuraṅgaśṛṅgapāṇiṅ ca carrying the horns
of an antelope in your hand, tvām you, paśyantī looking, aham I, bhajāmi adore.

I shall be delighted to see you initiated and engaged in the observance of the vow made pure, wearing excellent deer-skin and carrying the horns of an antelope in your hand.
pūrvāṅ diśaṅ vajradharō dakṣiṇāṅ pātu tē yamaḥ.

varuṇaḥ paścimāmāśāṅ dhanēśastūttarāṅ diśam৷৷2.16.24৷৷


tē your, pūrvāṅ diśam in the east, vajradharaḥ the wielder of thunder (Indra), dakṣiṇām in the south, yamaḥ Yama, paścimāmāśām in the west, varuṇaḥ Varuna, uttarāṅ diśaṅ tu in the north, dhanēśaḥ Kubera, pātu may protect you.

May Indra protect you on the east, Yama in the south, Varuna in the west and Kubera in the north.
atha sītāmanujñāpya kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ.

niścakrāma sumantrēṇa saha rāmō nivēśanāt৷৷2.16.25৷৷


atha thereafter, kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ wearing auspicious ornaments, rāmaḥ Rama, sītām Sita, anujñāpya taking leave of, sumantrēṇa saha along with Sumantra, nivēśanāt from his palace, niścakrāma departed.

Adorned in auspicious ornaments, Rama took leave of Sita and departed from his palace accompanied by Sumantra.
parvatādiva niṣkramya siṅhō giriguhāśayaḥ.

lakṣmaṇaṅ dvārisō.paśyatprahvāñjalipuṭaṅ sthitam৷৷2.16.26৷৷


saḥ he, giriguhāśayaḥ resting in a mountain cave, siṅhaḥ lion, parvatāt iva like from a mountain,
niṣkramya having come out of his palace, dvāri at the entrance, sthitam standing, prahvāñjalipuṭam bowing with folded hands, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, apaśyat saw.

Like a lion living in a mountain cave and coming out of it, Rama while exiting, saw Lakshmana at the entrance bowing with folded hands.
atha madhyamakakṣyāyāṅ samāgacchatsuhṛjjanaiḥ.

sa sarvānarthinō dṛṣṭvā samētya pratinandya ca৷৷2.16.27৷৷

tataḥ pāvakasaṅkāśamārurōha rathōttamam.

vaiyāghraṅ puruṣavyāghrō rājataṅ rājanandanaḥ৷৷2.16.28৷৷


atha after that, puruṣavyāghraḥ tiger among men, saḥ he, rājanandanaḥ son of the king (Rama), madhyamakakṣyāyāṅ in the middle courtyard, suhṛjjanaiḥ with friends, samāgacchat met, sarvān arthinaḥ all of them eager to see him, dṛṣṭvā having seen, samētya having met, pratinandya ca having greeted them, pāvakasaṅkāśam resembling fire, vaiyāghram covered with tiger-skin, rājatam made of silver, rathōttamam best of chariots, ārurōha mounted.

Rama, the best among men, met all his friends in the middle courtyard. Having seen them all eager to see him, he approached and greeted them. Thereafter, he mounted the best silver chariot covered with tiger-skin and glowing like fire.
mēghanādamasambādhaṅ maṇihēmavibhūṣitam.

muṣṇantamiva cakṣūṅṣi prabhayā sūryavarcasam৷৷2.16.29৷৷

karēṇuśiśukalpaiśca yuktaṅ paramavājibhiḥ.

hariyuktaṅ sahasrākṣō rathamindra ivāśugam৷৷2.16.30৷৷

prayayau tūrṇamāsthāya rāghavō jvalitaśśriyā.


śriyā with splendour, jvalitaḥ dazzling, rāghavaḥ descendant of the Raghu race (Rama), mēghanādam sound of cloud (thunder), asambādham spacious, maṇihēmavibhūṣitaṅ decorated with gold and gems, prabhayā with brilliance, cakṣūṅṣi eyes, muṣṇantamiva dazzling, sūryavarcasaṅ lusture of the Sun, karēṇuśiśukalpai: looking like young elephants, paramavājibhiḥ with excellent horses, yuktam harnessed, āśugam swift-moving, ratham chariot, sahasrākṣaḥ thousand-eyed, indraḥ Indra, hariyuktam iva harnessed by horses (of Indra), āsthāya mounted, tūrṇam swiftly, prayayau went.

The sound emanating from the chariot resembled the thunder. The spacious chariot was decorated with gold and gems which dazzled the eyes as though they shed the lustre of the Sun. The swift-moving chariot was harnessed by excellent horses as if they were young elephants. Like the thousand-eyed Indra, Rama, ablaze with royal splendour, mounted this chariot and sped away.
sa parjanya ivākāśē svanavānabhinādayan৷৷2.16.31৷৷

nikētānniryayau śrīmānmahābhrādiva candramāḥ.


ākāśē in the sky, parjanya iva like storm-cloud, svanavān sonorous, śrīmān magnificent, saḥ he (that chariot), abhinādayan making sound, mahābhrāt from a huge cloud, candramā iva like moon, nikētāt from the residence, niryayau departed.

The magnificent chariot, rumbling like a storm-cloud in the sky, emerged from (Rama's) residence like the Moon peeping through a huge cloud.
chatracāmarapāṇistu lakṣmaṇō rāghavānujaḥ৷৷2.16.32৷৷

jugōpa bhrātaraṅ bhrātā rathamāsthāya pṛṣṭhataḥ.


rāghavānujaḥ Rama's younger brother, bhrātā brother, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, chatracāmarapāṇiḥ holding an umbrella and a fan made of yak's tail in his hand, pṛṣṭhataḥ at the rear, ratham the chariot, āsthāya having mounted, bhrātaram brother, jugōpa guarded.

Holding an umbrella and a fan made of yak's tail in his hand Lakshmana boarded the chariot at the rear, guarding his brother.
tatō halahalāśabdastumulassamajāyata৷৷2.16.33৷৷

tasya niṣkramamāṇasya janaughasya samantataḥ.


tataḥ then, samantataḥ all around, niṣkramamāṇasya departing, tasya that (chariot's), janaughasya of the multitude of people, tumulaḥ tumultuous, halahalāśabdaḥ roaring sound, samajāyata emanated.

As it (the chariot) was passing out, a tumultuoas roar emanated from the multitude of people all around.
tatō hayavarā mukhyā nāgāśca girisannibhāḥ৷৷2.16.34৷৷

anujagmustadā rāmaṅ śataśō.tha sahasraśaḥ.


tataḥ afterwards, mukhyāḥ chiefs, hayavarāḥ excellent horses, girisannibhāḥ resembling hills in size, nāgāśca elephants, śataśaḥ in hundreds, sahasraśaḥ in thousands, tadā then, rāmam Rama, anujagmuḥ followed.

Then the chief commanders riding the best of the horses and elephants, resembling hills in size, followed Rama in their hundreds and thousands.
agrataścāsya sannaddhāścandanāgarubhūṣitāḥ৷৷2.16.35৷৷

khaḍgacāpadharāśśūrā jagmurāśaṅsavō janāḥ.


sannaddhāḥ equipped with armour, candanāgarubhūṣitāḥ anointing their bodies with sandalpaste and agaru, khaḍgacāpadharāḥ holding swords and bows, āśaṅsavaḥ heralds, śūrāḥ janāḥ soldiers, asya Rama's, agrataḥ ahead of him, jagmuḥ followed.

Soldiers, anointing their bodies with pastes of sandal and aloe wood, equipped with armour and holding swords and bows, went ahead heralding his (Rama's) arrival.
tatō vāditraśabdāśca stutiśabdāśca vandinām৷৷2.16.36৷৷

siṅhanādāśca śūrāṇāṅ tadā śuśruvirē pathi.


tataḥ afterwards, tadā then, pathi on the way, vāditraśabdāśca sounds of musical instruments, vandinām of panegyrists, stutiśabdāśca songs of eulogy, śūrāṇām warriors', siṅhanādāśca
roarings, śuśruvirē were heard.

At that time, sounds of musical instruments and songs of eulogy by panegyrists, roarings of warriors were heard on the way.
harmyavātāyanasthābhirbhūṣitābhissamantataḥ৷৷2.16.37৷৷

kīryamāṇa ssupuṣpaughairyayau strībhirarindamaḥ.


arindamaḥ subduer of enemies, harmyavātāyanasthābhiḥ standing at the windows of their mansions bhūṣitābhiḥ well-attired, strībhiḥ by women, samantataḥ from every side, supuṣpaughai: with heaps of flowers, kīryamāṇaḥ being showered, yayau proceeded.

Rama, the subduer of enemies, proceeded while the well-attired women standing at the windows of their mansions showered heaps of flowers on him from every side.
rāmaṅ sarvānavadyāṅgyō rāmapiprīṣayā tataḥ৷৷2.16.38৷৷

vacōbhiragyrairharmyasthā kṣitisthāśca vavandirē.


tataḥ thereafter, harmyasthāḥ standing on the top of the houses, kṣitisthāśca standing on the ground also, sarvānavadyāṅgya: women of faultless limbs, rāmapiprīṣayā to propitiate Rama, agyraiḥ charming, vacōbhiḥ with words, rāmaṅ to Rama, vavandirē paid homage.

Women with faultless limbs standing on their house-tops as well as on the ground paid their homage with charming words in order to propitiate Rama.
nūnaṅ nandati tē mātā kauśalyāmātṛnandana!৷৷2.16.39৷৷

paśyantī siddhayātraṅ tvāṅ pitryaṅ rājyamavasthitam.


mātṛnandana! O Joy of your mother, (Rama), siddhayātraṅ whose journey has become fruitful, pitryaṅ rājyam the father's kingdom, upasthitam secured, tvām you, paśyantī seeing, tē your, mātā
mother, kauśalyā Kausalya, nūnam surely, nandati will be delighted.

O Joy of your mother (Rama)! on seeing you having successfully acomplished the purpose of your journey (life) by securing your father's kingdom, your mother Kausalya will surely be delighted.
sarvasīmantinībhyaśca sītāṅ sīmantinī varām৷৷2.16.40৷৷

amanyanta hi tā nāryō rāmasya hṛdayapriyām.


tāḥ those, nāryaḥ women, rāmasya Rama's, hṛdayapriyām dear to the heart, sītām to Sita, sarvasīmantinībhya: more than all women, varām the best, sīmantinīm as lady, amanyanta hi considered.

Those women considered Sita who was dear to the heart of Rama the best among all women.
tayā sucaritaṅ dēvyā purā nūnaṅ mahattapaḥ৷৷2.16.41৷৷

rōhiṇīva śaśāṅkēna rāmasaṅyōgamāpa yā.


tayā that Sita, śaśāṅkēna with the Moon, rōhiṇī iva like Rohini, rāmasaṅyōgam union with Rama, āpa got, yā such, dēvyā by (Sita) devi, purā in the past, nūnam assuredly, mahat great, tapaḥ austerities, sucaritam peformed.

Sita was united with Rama like Rohini with the Moon surely because of her great austerities performed in the past. (They observed).
iti prāsādaśṛṅgēṣu pramadābhirnarōttamaḥ৷৷2.16.42৷৷

śuśrāva rājamārgasthaḥ priyā vāca udāhṛtāḥ.

ātmasaṅpūjanai śṛṇvan yayau rāmau mahāpatham৷৷2.16.43৷৷


rājamārgasthaḥ along the highway, narōttamaḥ best among men, (Rama), iti thus, prāsādaśṛṅgēṣu standing on the top of their buildings, pramadābhiḥ by women, udāhṛtā: uttered, priyāḥ vācaḥ pleasing words, śuśrāva heard, ātmasaṅpūjanai their admiration of himself śruṇvan having heard yayau proceeded rāmaḥ Rama mahāpatham the highway

Rama, the best among men, while riding along the highway overheard the pleasing words uttered by women standing on the elevation of their buildings. Thus hearing his own praise Rama proceeded along the highway.
sa rāghavastatra kathāprapañcān

śuśrāva lōkasya samāgatasya.

ātmādhikārā vividhāśca vācaḥ

prahṛṣṭarūpasya purō janasya৷৷2.16.44৷৷


tadā then, saḥ that, rāghavaḥ Rama, tatra there, samāgatasya having assembled, lōkasya people's, kathā prapañcān words of praise, śuśrāva heard, prahṛṣṭarūpasya great rejoicings, purōjanasya citizens, ātmādhikārāḥ concerning himself, vividhāḥ different, vācaḥ ca words (heard).

Rama heard these various words of admiration by people who had assembled there, and (witnessed) the rejoicings of the citizens.
ēṣa śriyaṅ gacchati rāghavō.dya

rājaprasādādvipulāṅ gamiṣyan.

ētē vayaṅ sarva samṛddhakāmā

yēṣāmayaṅ nō bhavitā praśāstā৷৷2.16.45৷৷


rājaprasādāt by the king's grace, vipulām the earth, gamiṣyan attaining, ēṣaḥ this, rāghavaḥ scion of the Raghus (Rama), adya today, śriyam wealth, gacchati is to acquire, yēṣām who, naḥ for us, ayam this, praśāstā protector, bhavitā will become, ētē vayam all of us, sarvasamṛddhakāmāḥ all our desires will be gratified.

This scion of the Raghus (Rama) is going to acquire the earth and the wealth today by the king's grace. He will be our protector and fulfil all our desires.
lābhō janasyāsya yadēṣa sarvaṅ

prapatsyatē rāṣṭramidaṅ cirāya.

na hyapriyaṅ kiñcana jātu kaści-

tpaśyēnna duḥkhaṅ manujādhipē.smin৷৷2.16.46৷৷


ēṣaḥ this (Rama), yat if, sarvam entire, idaṅ rāṣṭram this kingdom, cirāya for a long time, prapatsyatē obtains, asya janasya for these people, lābhaḥ benefit, asmin this Rama, manujādhipē king, kaścit none, jātu never, apriyam unpleasant, kiñcana even a little, na paśyēt hi will not see, duḥkham sorrow, na will not see.

If this Rama obtains the entire kingdom for a long time, it will be in the interest of the people. If he becomes king none will ever witness anything unpleasant or sad. (They observed).
sa ghōṣavadbhiśca mataṅgājairyayaiḥ

purassarai ssvastikasūtamāgadhaiḥ.

mahīyamānaḥ pravaraiśca vādakai-

rabhiṣṭutō vaiśravaṇō yathā yayau৷৷2.16.47৷৷


saḥ he (Rama), ghōṣavadbhiḥ with sounds, mataṅgajai: with intoxicated elephants, hayaiḥ with horses, purassaraiḥ preceding, svastikasūtamāgadhaiḥ invocation of blessings by bards, mahīyamānaḥ greatly honoured, pravaraiḥ vādakaiḥ by best musical performers, abhiṣṭutaḥ being praised, vaiśravaṇō yathā like Kubera, yayau went.

With bards, panegyrists and great musical performers invoking blessings and walking ahead, he (Rama) proceeded, like Kubera amid intoxicated elephants and horses.
karēṇumātaṅṅgarathāśvasaṅkulaṅ

mahājanaugha paripūrṇacatvaram.

prabhūtaratnaṅ bahupaṇyasañcayaṅ

dadarśa rāmō ruciraṅ mahāpatham৷৷2.16.48৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, karēṇumātaṅgarathāśvasaṅkulam thronged with female elephants, elephants, horses and chariots, mahājanaugha: great multitude of people, paripūrṇacatvaram filled at the intesection of highways, prabhūtaratnam with many gems, bahupaṇyasaṅcayam sufficient merchandise (for sale), ruciraṅ beautiful, mahāpatham highway, dadarśa saw.

Rama beheld the beautiful highway filled with precious stones and merchandise (for sale), thronged with elephants, horses and chariots, the cross-roads crowded with multitude of people.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē ṣōḍaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
