[Rama, Sita and Lakshmana take leave of Dasaratha---Dasaratha falls unconscious.]

tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaḥ śyāmō nirupamō mahān.

uvāca rāma staṅ sūtaṅ piturākhyāhi māmiti৷৷2.34.1৷৷


tataḥ then, kamalapatrākṣaḥ lotus-eyed, śyāmaḥ of dark complexion, nirupamaḥ peerless, mahān great, rāmaḥ Rama, mām about me, pituḥ to father, ākhyāhi inform, iti thus, taṅ sūtam to that charioteer, uvāca he said.

Let my father be informed of my arrival, said the lotus-eyed, dark-complexioned, venerable, peerless Rama to the charioteer.
sa rāmaprēṣitaḥ kṣipraṅ santāpakaluṣēndriyaḥ.

praviśya nṛpatiṅ sūtō niśvasantaṅ dadarśa ha ৷৷2.34.2৷৷


santāpakaluṣēndriya: senses overwhelmed with grief, saḥ sūtaḥ that charioteer (Sumantra), rāmaprēṣitaḥ sent forth by Rama, kṣipram quickly, praviśya having entered, niḥśvasantam sighing, nṛpatim to king Dasaratha, dadarśa saw.

At the command of Rama, charioteer Sumantra whose senses were overwhelmed with grief quickly entered the apartment of the king and found him heaving sighs.
uparaktamivādityaṅ bhasmacchannamivānalam.

taṭākamiva nistōyamapaśyajjagatīpatim৷৷2.34.3৷৷


uparaktam eclipsed, ādityam iva like the Sun, bhasmacchannam covered with ashes, analam iva like fire, nistōyam dried up, taṭākam iva like a tank, jagatīpatim lord of the world, apaśyat saw.

He saw the lord of the world (Dasaratha) dull like the Sun in eclipse, like the fire
covered with ashes, like a tank with its water dried up.
ālōkya tu mahāprājñaḥ paramākulacētasam.

rāmamēvānuśōcantaṅ sūtaḥ prāñjalirāsadat৷৷2.34.4৷৷


mahāprājñaḥ sagacious one, sūtaḥ charioteer, rāmamēva to Rama only, anuśōcantam grieving, paramākula cētanam extremely agitated mind, ālōkya tu having seen, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, āsadat approached.

Seeing the king brooding over Rama, in an extremely agitated state, the sagacious charioteer approached him with folded hands.
taṅ vardhayitvā rājānaṅ pūrvaṅ sūtō jayāśiṣā.

bhayaviklabayā vācā mandayā ślakṣṇamabravīt৷৷2.34.5৷৷


sūtaḥ the charioteer, taṅ rājānam to that king (Dasaratha), pūrvam at first, jayāśiṣā greeting with (the words) 'Victory be yours', vardhayitvā having greeted, bhayaviklabayā trembling with fear, mandayā in a feeble, vācā voice, ślakṣṇam gently, abravīt said.

At first greeting the king with the words 'victory be yours', the charioteer, trembling with fear, gently said in a feeble voice.
ayaṅ sa puruṣavyāghrō dvāri tiṣṭhati tē sutaḥ.

brāhmaṇēbhyō dhanaṅ datvā sarvañcaivōpajīvinām৷৷2.34.6৷৷


puruṣavyāghraḥ a tiger among men (best of men), saḥ ayam tē sutaḥ this son of yours, (Rama), brāhmaṇēbhyaḥ to brahmins, upajīvināṅ caiva to all the dependents, sarvam entire, dhanam wealth, dattvā having given away (in charity), dvāri at the entrance, tiṣṭhati is waiting.

Your son Rama, the best of men, having given away his entire wealth in charity to brahmins and to all the dependents is waiting at the entrance.
sa tvā paśyatu bhadraṅ tē rāmassatyaparākramaḥ.

sarvān suhṛda āpṛcchya tvāmidānīṅ didṛkṣatē৷৷1.34.7৷৷


tē to you, bhadram may you prosper, satyaparākramaḥ possessing proven prowess, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, tvā you, paśyatu let him see, sarvān all, suhṛdaḥ friends, āpṛcchaya after taking leave, idānīm now, tvām you, didṛkṣatē desirous of seeing you.

Be blessed! audience may be granted to Rama who possesses proven prowess, and now waits, after taking leave of his friends, to see you.
gamiṣyati mahāraṇyaṅ taṅ paśya jagatīpatē.

vṛtaṅ rājaguṇai ssarvairādityamiva raśmibhiḥ৷৷2.34.8৷৷


mahāraṇyam to wild forest, gamiṣyati he will go, jagatīpatē O Lord of the world, sarvaiḥ by all, rājaguṇaiḥ princely virtues, vṛtam embellisted with, tam he, raśmibhiḥ (encircled) by rays, ādityamiva like the Sun, paśya see.

O Lord of the world! behold him embellished with all princely virtues like the Sun encircled with its rays, (now) leaving for the forest.
sa satyavādī dharmātmā gāmbhīryātsāgarōpamaḥ.

ākāśa iva niṣpaṅkō narēndraḥ pratyuvāca tam৷৷2.34.9৷৷


satyavādī truthful, dharmātmā virtuous, gāmbhīryāt in depth, sāgarōpamaḥ like the ocean, ākāśa iva like the sky, niṣpaṅka: free from mud (clean), saḥ narēndraḥ that king, tam to him (Sumantra), pratyuvāca replied.

That truthful and virtuous king (Dasaratha) who was deep like the ocean and free from mud (pure) like the sky replied:
sumaṅntrānaya mē dārān yē kēcidiha māmakāḥ.

dāraiḥ parivṛtassarvairdraṣṭumicchāmi dhārmikam৷৷2.34.10৷৷


sumantra: Sumantra, māmakāḥ all my (consorts), yē kēcit whosoever, iha are here, mē dārān my wives, ānaya bring them, sarvaiḥ by all, dāraiḥ with wives, parivṛtaḥ surrounded by, dhārmikam virtuous Rama, draṣṭum to see, icchāmi I want.

O Sumantra! bring all my consorts who are here. In the company of all my wives, I desire to give audience to virtuous Rama.
sō.ntaḥpuramatītyaiva striyastā vākyamabravīt.

āryāhvayati vō rājā gamyatāṅ tatra mā ciram৷৷2.34.11৷৷


saḥ Sumantra, antaḥpuram inner apartment, atītyaiva having crossed, tāḥ those, striyaḥ to the ladies, vākyam words, abravīt said, āryāḥ venerable ones, vaḥ you, rājā king, āhvayati summons, tatra there, gamyatām please go, ciram mā do not delay.

O venerable ones, king Dasaratha summons you. Go there without delay, said Sumantra to the king's consorts after crossing the inner apartment.
ēvamuktāḥ striya ssarvāḥ sumantrēṇa nṛpājñayā.

pracakramu stadbhavanaṅ bharturājñāya śāsanam৷৷2.34.12৷৷


nṛpājñayā by king's order, sumantrēṇa by Sumantra, ēvam in this way, uktāḥ spoken, sarvāḥ all,
striyaḥ ladies, bhartuḥ husband's, śāsanam command, ājñāya having known, tadbhavanam to the palace, pracakramuḥ went.

Thus addressed by Sumantra in accordance with the king's order, all the women went to their husband's palace.
ardhasaptaśatāstāstu pramadāstāmralōcanāḥ.

kausalyāṅ parivāryātha śanairjagmurdhṛtavratāḥ৷৷2.34.13৷৷


atha thereafter, dhṛtavratāḥ faithful to their vows, tāmralōcanāḥ women with copper-red eyes, tāḥ those, ardhasaptaśatāḥ half of seven hundred (three hundred and fifty), pramadāḥ women, kauśalyām to Kausalya, parivārya surrounding, śanaiḥ slowly, jagmuḥ reached.

Thereafter, Kausalya surrounded by three hundred and fifty ladies who were faithful to their vows, reached there slowly with their eyes turned copper-red (in grief).
āgatēṣu ca dārēṣu samavēkṣya mahīpatiḥ.

uvāca rājā taṅ sūtaṅ sumantrā.naya mē sutam৷৷2.34.14৷৷


dārēṣu the wives āgatēṣu having arrived, mahīpatiḥ lord of the world (Dasaratha), rājā king, samavēkṣya having seen, taṅ sūtam to that charioteer, uvāca said, sumantra Sumantra, mē sutam my son (Rama), ānaya usher in

Usher in my son (Rama), O Sumantra, said the lord of the world (king Dasaratha) to the charioteer on seeing his wives arrive.
sa sūtō rāmamādāya lakṣmaṇaṅ maithilīṅ tadā.

jagāmābhimukhastūrṇaṅ sakāśaṅ jagatīpatēḥ৷৷2.34.15৷৷


saḥ sūtaḥ that charioteer, tadā then, rāmam to Rama, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, maithilīm to Sita, ādāya having brought, tūrṇam without delay, jagatīpatēḥ the king's, sakāśam presence, abhimukhaḥ facing, jagāma went.

Then the charioteer fetched Rama, Lakshmana and Sita and advanced towards the king without delay.
sa rājā putramāyāntaṅ dṛṣṭvā dūrātkṛtāñjalim.

utpapātāsanāttūrṇamārta strījanasaṅvṛtaḥ৷৷2.34.16৷৷


strījanasaṅvṛtaḥ surrounded by women, saḥ rājā that king, kṛtāñjalim with folded hands,
āyāntam coming, putram son, dūrāt at distance, dṛṣṭvā having seen, ārtaḥ with grief, tūrṇam suddenly, āsanāt from the throne, utpapāta stood up.

When the king saw from a distance his son coming with folded hands, he, surrounded by the ladies and tormented with grief, stood up.
sō.bhidudrāva vēgēna rāmaṅ dṛṣṭvā viśāmpatiḥ.

tamasaṅprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrchitaḥ৷৷2.34.17৷৷


viśām patiḥ lord of men, rāmam to Rama, dṛṣṭvā having seen, vēgēna quickly, abhidudrāva ran forward, asamprāpya unable to reach, duḥkhārtaḥ tormented with grief, mūrcchitaḥ unconscious, bhuvi on the ground, papāta he fell.

At the sight of Rama, the lord of men (king Dasaratha), tortured with grief, immediately ran towards him but before he could reach him, fell unconscious on the floor.
taṅ rāmō.bhyapatat kṣipraṅ lakṣmaṇaśca mahārathaḥ.

visaṅjñamiva duḥkhēna saśōkaṅ nṛpatiṅ tadā৷৷2.34.18৷৷


tadā then, duḥkhēna due to agony, visaṅjñam iva like one who had lost his senses, saśōkam with grief, taṅ nṛpatim to that king, rāmaḥ Rama, mahārathaḥ a mighty warrior, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also, kṣipram quickly, abhyapatat reached.

Rama and the mighty warrior Lakshmana, quickly reached the king who lay as though he had lost his senses due to grief.
strīsahasraninādaśca saṅjajñē rājavēśmani.

hā hā rāmēti sahasā bhūṣaṇadhvanimūrchitaḥ৷৷2.34.19৷৷


sahasā suddenly, rājavēśmani in the palace, bhūṣaṇadhvanimūrchitaḥ mingled with the (tinkling) sounds of ornaments, hā hā rāma iti alas, alas, Rama!, strī sahasraninādaśca wailing of a
thousand women, saṅjajñē was produced.

All on a sudden there arose from (the mouths of) a thousand women of the palace cries of 'alas, alas, Rama!' mingled with the tinkling sounds of their ornaments.
taṅ pariṣvajya bāhubhyāṅ tāvubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

paryaṅṅkē sītayā sārdhaṅ rudantaḥ samavēśayan৷৷2.34.20৷৷


tau those, ubhau two, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, sītayā sārdham along with Sita, tam him (Dasaratha), bāhubhyām with their arms, pariṣvajya having embraced, rudantaḥ while wailing, paryaṅkē on the couch, samavēśayan seated.

Thereafter Rama and Lakshmana assisted by Sita, lifted him wailing in their arms and laid him on a couch.
atha rāmō muhūrtēna labdhasaṅjñaṅ mahīpatim.

uvāca prāñjalirbhūtvā śōkārṇavapariplutam৷৷2.34.21৷৷


atha thereafter, rāmaḥ Rama, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, bhūtvā being, muhūrtēna in a moment , labdhasaṅjñam who regained consciousness, śōkārṇavapariplutam immersed in the sea of sorrow, mahīpatim to the king, uvāca said.

After the king regained his consciousness in a moment, Rama with folded hands said to him, who was immersed in a sea of sorrow:
āpṛcchē tvāṅ mahārāja sarvēṣāmīśvarō.si naḥ.

prasthitaṅ daṇḍakāraṇyaṅ paśya tvaṅ kuśalēna mām৷৷2.34.22৷৷


mahārāja O great king, tvām you, apṛcchē I am seeking leave, sarvēṣām of all, na: of us, īśvaraḥ asi you are the Lord, tvam you, kuśalēna cheerfully, daṇḍakāraṇyam to Dandaka forest, prasthitam departing, mām me, paśya you may see.

O great king, I am asking leave of you, for you are lord of all of us. I am set to depart for the Dandaka forest. See me (off) in a cheerful mood.
lakṣmaṇaṅ cānujānīhi sītā cānvēti māṅ vanam.

kāraṇairbahubhi stathyairvāryamāṇau na cēcchataḥ৷৷2.34.23৷৷


lakṣmaṇaṅ ca (to) Lakshmana also, anujānīhi may allow, sītā ca Sita also, mām me, vanam to the forest, anvēti will be following, tathyaiḥ by genuine, bahubhiḥ many, kāraṇaiḥ with reasons, vāryamāṇau dissuaded, na ca icchataḥ both do not agree.

Allow Lakshmana and Sita to follow me into the forest. I tried to dissuade them with a number of reasons but they did not agree.
anujānīhi sarvānnaḥ śōkamutsṛjya mānada.

lakṣmaṇaṅ māṅ ca sītāṅ ca prajāpatiriva prajāḥ৷৷2.34.24৷৷


mānada O respector of men, śōkam grief, utsṛjya discarding, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, māṅ ca also me, sītāṅ ca to Sita too, sarvān all, naḥ us, prajāpatiḥ creator Bramha, prajāḥ iva like subjects, anujānīhi permit.

Discard your grief and, like Brahma, the creator, allow Lakshmana, Sita and me all of us, your subjects, O respector of men!
pratīkṣamāṇamavyagramanujñāṅ jagatīpatēḥ.

uvāca rājā samprēkṣya vanavāsāya rāghavam৷৷2.34.25৷৷


rājā king, vanavāsāya to dwell in the forest, jagatīpatēḥ king's (his), anujñām permission, pratīkṣamāṇam awaiting, avyagram to the unruffled, rāghavam to Rama, samprēkṣya having seen, uvāca said.

On seeing Rama, unruffled, waiting for his permission to proceed to the forest, the lord of the earth, king Dasaratha said:
ahaṅ rāghava! kaikēyyā varadānēna mōhitaḥ.

ayōdhyāyāstvamēvādya bhava rājā nigṛhya mām৷৷2.34.26৷৷


rāghava O Son of the Raghu dynasty!, aham I, kaikēyyā Kaikeyi's, varadānēna by bestowing boons, mōhitaḥ have been deluded, adya now, mām me, nigṛhya by confining, tvamēva yourself, ayōdhyāyāḥ of Ayodhya, rājā bhava be king.

I have been deluded by Kaikeyi into bestowing boons. Imprison me and be now king of Ayodhya, O scion of the Raghu dynasty!
ēvamuktō nṛpatinā rāmō dharmabhṛtāṅ varaḥ.

pratyuvācāñjaliṅ kṛtvā pitaraṅ vākyakōvidaḥ৷৷2.34.27৷৷


dharmabhṛtām among upholders of righteousness, varaḥ best, vākyakōvidaḥ skilled in speech, rāmaḥ Rama, nṛpatinā by the king, ēvam in this way, uktaḥ spoken, añjaliṅ kṛtvā with folded palms, pitaram to his father, pratyuvāca replied.

Thus spoken to by the king, Rama, skilled in speech and upholder of righteousness, replied to his father with folded palms:
bhavānvarṣa sahasrāya pṛthivyā nṛpatē! patiḥ.

ahaṅ tvaraṇyēvatsyāmi na mē kāryaṅ tvayā.nṛtam৷৷2.34.28৷৷


nṛpatē O king, varṣasahasrāya for a thousand years, bhavān you alone, pṛthivyāḥ of this earth, patiḥ are the lord, ahaṅ tu as for me, araṇyē in the forest, vatsyāmi I will dwell, tvayā by you, mē to me, anṛtam untruth, na kāryam should not be done.

You will remain the lord of this earth for a thousand years to come, O king! As for me, I will dwell in the forest. Do not deviate from truth on my account.
nava pañca ca varṣāṇi vanavāsē vihṛtya tē.

punaḥpādau grahīṣyāmi pratijñāntē narādhipa!৷৷2.34.29৷৷


narādhipa! O lord of men (king)!, nava pañca ca nine plus five (fourteen), varṣāṇi years, vanavāsē dwelling in the forest, vihṛtya after wandering, pratijñāntē after fulfilling the vow, punaḥ again, tē your, pādau feet, grahīṣyāmi I will grasp.

Having fulfilled the vow on the completion of fourteen years of wandering in the forest I shall come back to touch your feet, O lord of men!
rudannārtaḥ priyaṅ putraṅ satyapāśēna saṅyataḥ.

kaikēyyā cōdyamānastu mithō rājā tamabravīt৷৷2.34.30৷৷


satyapāśēna by the cord of truth, saṅyataḥ bound, rājā king, kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, mithaḥ by mutual talk, cōdyamānastu instigated (to send Rama away), ārtaḥ distressed, rudan while wailing, tam that, priyaṅ putram beloved son Rama, abravīt said.

The king who was bound by the cord of truth and instigated by Kaikeyi said, wailing in distress:
śrēyasē vṛddhayē tāta! punarāgamanāya ca.

gacchasvāriṣṭamavyagraḥ panthānamakutōbhayam৷৷2.34.31৷৷


tāta! dear child, Rama, ariṣṭam auspicious, avyagram without sorrows, akutōbhayam without threat (from any quarter), panthānam path, śrēyasē for your welfare, vṛddhayē for prosperity, punaḥ āgamanāya ca and to return, gacchasva go.

Go, my dear child, wish you wellMay your path be auspicious, free from obstacles and fear (from any quarters). Come back (after fulfilment of the pledge)!
na hi satyātmanastāta! dharmābhimanasa stava.

vinivartayituṅ buddhiḥ śakyatē raghunandana৷৷2.34.32৷৷


tāta dear child, raghunandana delight of the Raghus (Rama), satyātmanaḥ upright one, dharmābhimanasaḥ devoted to duty, tava your, buddhi: mind, vinivartayitum to dissuade, na śakyatē hi am not able.

O my beloved son! O delight of the Raghus! you are devoted to truth and duty. It is difficult to dissuade you from your resolve .
adya tvidānīṅ rajanīṅ putra! mā gaccha sarvathā.

ēkāhadarśanēnāpi sādhu tāvaccarāmyaham৷৷2.34.33৷৷


putra O son, adya today, idānīm now, rajanīm this night, sarvathā by all means, mā gaccha do not go, ēkāhadarśanēnāpi at least by seeing you for one day more, aham I, sādhu peacefully, carāmi tāvat go on.

O son, by all means, do not go now, today, tonight! Give me, at least, one day more to see (by with) you to my satisfaction.
mātaraṅ māṅ ca sampaśyan vasēmāmadya śarvarīm!.

tarpita ssarvakāmaistvaṅ śvaḥ kālē sādhayiṣyasi৷৷.2.34.34৷৷


mātaram mother, māṅ ca me also, sampaśyan seeing, adya today, imām this, śarvarīm night, vasa stay, sarvakāmaiḥ with all desires, tarpitaḥ satisfied, tvam you, śvaḥ tomorrow, kālē in proper time, sādhayiṣyasi set out.

Stay tonight in the company of your mother and me. With all our desire satisfied, you can set out tomorrow at the appropriate time.
duṣkaraṅ kriyatē putra sarvathā rāghava! tvayā.

matpriyārthaṅ priyāṅstyaktvā yadyāsi vijanaṅ vanam৷৷2.34.35৷৷


putra son, rāghava descendant of the Raghus, tvayā by you, sarvathā by all means, duṣkaram
difficult task, kriyatē is being done, yat for that reason, mat priyārtham for the sake of my pleasure, priyān dear ones, tyaktvā having forsaken, vijanam deserted place, vanam to the forest, yāsi are going.

O my son, O descendant of the Raghus, you are called upon to accomplish, by all means, a very difficult task. For the sake of my pleasure you are forsaking your dear ones and going to the desolate forest.
na caitanmē priyaṅ putra śapē satyēna rāghava.

channayā calitastvasmi striyā channāgnikalpayā৷৷2.34.36৷৷


putra O son!, rāghava Rama, ētat all this, mē to me, priyam pleasing, na ca not, satyēna on truth, śapē am swearing, channāgnikalpayā by a woman resembling concealed fire, channayā with a hidden motive, striyā by a woman, calitaḥ asmi I am deceived.

I swear by truth, O my beloved son, that your departure to the forest is in no way a pleasure to me. With a hidden motive, this woman who is like fire concealed by ashes has duped me.
vañcanā yā tu labdhā mē tāṅ tvaṅ nistartumicchasi.

anayā vṛttasādinyā kaikēyyā.bhipracōditaḥ৷৷.2.34.37৷৷


tvam you, vṛttasādinyā one who destroys the tradition of the race, anayā this, kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, abhipracōditaḥ having been instigated, yā vañcanā whichever deceit, labdhā has been
experienced, tām that one, nistartum to cross over, icchasi wish.

Instigated by this Kaikeyi, the destroyer of traditions (of the race) I have been deceived for which you wish to pay.
na caitadāścaryatamaṅ yattajyēṣṭhassutō mama.

apānṛtakathaṅ putra! pitaraṅ kartumicchasi৷৷2.34.38৷৷


putra son, mama my, jyēṣṭhaḥ eldest, sutaḥ son, pitaram of father, apānṛtakatham free from a false promise, kartum to do, icchasi (iti) yat that you wish, tat ētat all that, āścaryatamam most wonderful, na not.

It is not a great surprise that you, O my son, being the eldest, want to make your father free from a false promise.
atha rāmastathā śrutvā piturārtasya bhāṣitam.

lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā dīnō vacanamabravīt৷৷2.34.39৷৷


atha thereafter, rāmaḥ Rama, tathā in that way, ārtasya of the distressed one, pituḥ father's, bhāṣitam words, śrutvā having heard, bhrātrā with brother, lakṣmaṇēna saha along with Lakshmana, dīnaḥ distressed, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Rama and Lakshmana were sad to hear the words of their anguished father. Rama replies:
prāpsyāmi yānadya guṇānkō mē śvastān pradāsyati.

apakramaṇamēvātaḥ sarvakāmairahaṅ vṛṇē৷৷2.34.40৷৷


adya today, yān guṇān merit, prāpsyāmi obtain, tān those, śvaḥ tomorrow, mē to me, kaḥ who, pradāsyati will give, ataḥ therefore, sarvakāmaiḥ with all desires, apakramaṇamēva departing, aham I, vṛṇē am seeking.

Who will give me the merit (of propriety) I earn today? Therefore, I want to depart (today), discarding all my desires.
iyaṅ sarāṣṭrā sajanā dhanadhānyasamākulā.

mayā visṛṣṭā vasudhā bharatāya pradīyatām৷৷2.34.41৷৷


mayā by me, visṛṣṭā abdicated, sarāṣṭrā with kingdom, sajanā its inhabitants, dhanadhānyasamākulā abounding in wealth and foodgrains, iyaṅ vasudhā this earth, bharatāya to Bharata, pradīyatām
may be given.

The kingdom abdicated by me with all its people, its wealth and foodgrains may be bestowed on Bharata.
vanavāsakṛtā buddhirna ca mē.dya caliṣyati.

yastuṣṭēna varō dattaḥ kaikēyyai varada! tvayā৷৷2.34.42৷৷

dīyatāṅ nikhilēnaiva satyastvaṅ bhava pārthiva.


vanavāsakṛtā in banishment, mē buddhi: my decision, adya now, na caliṣyati will not change, varada bestower of boons, pārthiva O king, tuṣṭēna by well-pleased, tvayā by you, kaikēyyai to Kaikeyi, yaḥ varaḥ those boons, dattaḥ given, nikhilēnaiva completely, dīyatām may be given, tvam you, satyaḥ bhava you remain truthful.

My decision to go to the forest remains unchanged. O bestower of boons, O king! honour to the last word the boons you had granted Kaikeyi. And adhere to truth.
ahaṅ nidēśaṅ bhavatō yathōktamanupālayan৷৷2.34.43৷৷

caturdaśa samā vatsyē vanē vanacaraissaha.


aham I, yathōktam as has been told, bhavataḥ your, nidēśam command, anupālayan obeying, caturdaśa fourteen, samāḥ years, vanacaraiḥ saha with the forest rangers, vanē in the forest, vatsyē shall dwell.

As already said, I shall dwell in the forest for fourteen years with forest rangers, in obedience to your commands.
mā vimarśō vasumatī bharatāya pradīyatām৷৷2.34.44৷৷

na hi mē kāṅkṣitaṅ rājyaṅ sukhamātmani vā priyam.

yathānidēśaṅ kartuṅ vai tavaiva raghunandana৷৷2.34.45৷৷


vimarśaḥ mā do not brood, vasumatī the earth, bharatāya to Bharata, pradīyatām be given, raghunandana O Delight of the Raghu race, mē to me, rājyam kingdom, ātmani in me (for me), sukhaṅ vā pleasure, kāṅkṣitam is desired, na hi is not, tava your, yathā nidēśam according to your order, kartum ēva to carry out only, priyaṅ vai is dear to me.

Do not brood. Bestow the kingdom on Bharata. I do not have any desire for the kingdom or pleasure. Nothing is dearer to me than compliance with your order, O Delight of the Raghu race!
apagacchatu tē du:khaṅ mābhūrbāṣpapariplutaḥ.

na hi kṣubhyati durdharṣaḥ samudraḥ saritāṅ patiḥ৷৷2.34.46৷৷


tē your, duḥkham grief, apagacchatu may go away, bāṣpapariplutaḥ filled with tears, mā bhūḥ do not become, saritām of rivers, patiḥ lord, durdharṣa: an indomitable one, samudraḥ ocean, na kṣubhyati is never perturbed.

Let your grief go. Do not shed tears. The indomitable ocean, Lord of rivers, is never perturbed.
naivāhaṅ rājyamicchāmi na sukhaṅ na ca mēdinīm.

naiva sarvānimān kāmā nnasvargaṅ naiva jīvitam৷৷2.34.47৷৷


aham I, rājyam kingdom, naiva icchāmi do not desire, sukham comfort, na not, mēdinīm ca
dominion, na not, sarvān all, imān these, kāmān pleasures, naiva not, svargam heaven, na not at all, jīvitam life, naiva not.

I desire no kingdom, no comfort, not this earth nor any pleasure nor heaven nor even life.
tvāmahaṅ satyamicchāmi nānṛtaṅ puruṣarṣabha.

pratyakṣaṅ tava satyēna sukṛtēna ca tē śapē৷৷2.34.48৷৷


puruṣarṣabha O best of men, tvām you, satyam (uphold) truth, aham I, icchāmi wish, anṛtam falsehood, na not, tava your, pratyakṣam in presence, satyēna on truth, sukṛtēna ca on my merits acquired, tē to you, śapē I swear.

I wish you, O best of men, to uphold truth and not falsehood. I swear this in your presence in the name of truth and on my merits acquired.
na ca śakyaṅ mayā tāta! sthātuṅ kṣaṇamapi prabhō.

sa śōkaṅ dhārayasvēmaṅ na hi mē.sti viparyayaḥ৷৷2.34.49৷৷


tāta O father, prabhō O lord, mayā by me, kṣaṇamapi even for a moment, sthātum to stay here, na śakyam not possible, saḥ you, imam this, śōkam grief, dhārayasva restrain, mē my, viparyayaḥ nāsti hi no change in my resolve.

It is not possible for me, O father! to stay here for a moment any longer. Restrain your grief. There can be no change in my resolve, O king!
arthitō hyasmi kaikēyyā vanaṅ gacchēti rāghava.

mayā cōktaṅ vrajāmīti tatsatyamanupālayē৷৷2.34.50৷৷


rāghava O scion of the Raghu race, vanam to the forest, gaccha you may go, iti thus, kaikēyyā by Kaikeyi, arthitaḥ asmi hi I have been asked, vrajāmi iti I shall go, mayā by me, uktaṅ ca it has been promised, tat that, satyam truth (promise), anupālayē I shall follow.

'O Rama, go to the forest', Kaikeyi had said, and I have given her word I would go. I must fulfil my promise.
mā cōtkaṇṭhāṅ kṛthā dēva! vanē raṅsyāmahē vayam.

praśāntahariṇākīrṇē nānāśakunināditē৷৷2.34.51৷৷


dēva O Lord , utkaṇṭhām mā kṛthāḥ do not worry, vayam we, praśāntahariṇākīrṇē in the peaceful
forest full of deer, nānāśakunināditē resounding with the chirpings of various birds, vanē in the forest, raṅsyāmahē we will enjoy.

Do not worry, O Lord! We will enjoy (our stay in) the peaceful forest full of deer and resounding with the chirpings of various birds.
pitā hi daivataṅ tāta! dēvatānāmapi smṛtam.

tasmāddaivatamityēva kariṣyāmi piturvacaḥ৷৷2.34.52৷৷


tāta O father, dēvatānāmapi even for gods also, pitā a father, daivatam as divine, smṛtaṅ hi is cited in scriptures, tasmāt therefore, daivatam ityēva treating as god, pituḥ father's, vacaḥ kariṣyāmi obey his words.

Father is divine even for the gods as cited in scriptures, therefore, looking upon father as my god, I will carry out his words, O father!
caturdaśasu varṣēṣu gatēṣu narasattama.

punardrakṣyasi māṅ prāptaṅ santāpō.yaṅ vimucyatām৷৷2.34.53৷৷


narasattama O best among men, caturdaśasu when fourteen, varṣēṣu years, gatēṣu having gone, punaḥ again, prāptam returned, mām me, drakṣyasi you will see, ayam this, santāpaḥ grief, vimucyatām should be given up.

I shall return after fourteen years have passed, O best among men! you will see me
back, Give up this grief.
yēna saṅstambhanīyō.yaṅ sarvō bāṣpagalō janaḥ.

sa tvaṅ puruṣaśārdūla! kimarthaṅ vikriyāṅ gataḥ৷৷2.34.54৷৷


puruṣaśārdūla O tiger (best) among men, bāṣpagalaḥ throats choked with tears, sarvaḥ all, ayaṅ janaḥ this man, yēna by whom, saṅstambhanīyaḥ are to be pacified, saḥ tvam you, kimartham why, vikriyāṅ gataḥ this change.

When you, O tiger among men, are required (as king) to pacify those whose throats are choked with tears, why this change in you?
puraṅ ca rāṣṭraṅ ca mahī ca kēvalā

mayā nisṛṣṭā bharatāya dīyatām.

ahaṅ nidēśaṅ bhavatō.nupālayan

vanaṅ gamiṣyāmi cirāya sēvitum৷৷2.34.55৷৷


puraṅ ca city, rāṣṭraṅ ca kingdom also, mayā by me, nisṛṣṭā delivered, kēvalā mahī ca this entire earth, bharatāya for Bharata, dīyatām may be given, aham I, bhavataḥ your, nidēśam order, anupālayan obeying, vanam to the forest, cirāya for a long time, sēvitum to serve, gamiṣyāmi shall go.

I am renouncing this city, kingdom and this entire earth, and let all this be conferred on Bharata. In obedience to your order, I shall go and live in the forest for a long time.
mayā nisṛṣṭāṅ bharatō mahīmimāṅ

saśailaṣaṇḍāṅ sapurāṅ sakānanām.

śivāṅ susīmāmanuśāstu kēvalaṅ

tvayā yaduktaṅ nṛpatē tathāstu tat৷৷2.34.56৷৷


nṛpatē O king, saśailaṣaṇḍām along with mountain ranges, sapurām with cities, sakānanām with forests, śivām auspicious, susīmām with well-laid frontiers, mayā by me, nisṛṣṭām given away, imāṅ mahīm this land, bharataḥ Bharata, kēvalam alone, anuśāstu may rule, tvayā by you, yat which, uktam was said, tat that one, tathā astu may happen.

I am leaving behind, O king! this (auspicious) land with its well-laid boundaries, mountain ranges, cities and forests, which Bharata alone should rule. Let it happen the way you have said.
na mē tathā pārthiva dhīyatē manō

mahatsu kāmēṣu na cātmanaḥpriyē.

yathā nidēśē tava śiṣṭasammatē

vyapaitu duḥkhaṅ tava matkṛtē.nagha৷৷2.34.57৷৷


anagha O sinless, pārthiva O king, mē manaḥ my mind, śiṣṭasammatē acceptable to the disciplined (wise), tava nidēśē by your order, yathā as, dhīyatē is contained, tathā in that way, mahatsu great, kāmēṣu pleasures, na not, ātmanaḥ mine, priyē dear, na not, matkṛtē on my account, tava your, duḥkham grief, vyapaitu shall be expelled.

O king! my mind derives no happiness from great enjoyment or personal comfort as it does from carrying out your order. This is corroborated by the wise. Your grief (relating to filfilment of the vow) on mt account will be dispelled, O sinless one!
tadadya naivānagha rājyamavyayaṅ

na sarvakāmānna sukhaṅ na maithilīm.

na jīvitaṅ tvāmanṛtēna yōjayan

vṛṇīya satyaṅ vratamastu tē tathā৷৷2.34.58৷৷


anagha O sinless one, tat for that, adya now, tvām you, anṛtēna with untruth, yōjayan associating, avyayam eternal, rājyam kingdom, naiva vṛṇīya will not seek, sarvakāmān all desires, na not, sukham happiness, na not, maithilīm Sita, na not, jīvitam life, na not, tē to you, vratam vow, tathā in that way, satyam astu let it become true.

O sinless one! by associating you with falsehood I will neither seek this eternal kingdom nor objects of desires nor objects of happiness nor Maithili nor even my life. I only wish that your vow comes true.
phalāni mūlāni ca bhakṣayanvanē

girīṅśca paśyan saritassarāṅsi ca.

vanaṅ praviśyaiva vicitrapādapam

sukhī bhaviṣyāmi tavāstu nirvṛtiḥ৷৷2.34.59৷৷


vicitrapādapam with various kinds of trees, vanam the forest, praviśyaiva having entered, phalāni fruits, mūlāni ca roots also, bhakṣayan eating, vanē in the forest, girīṅśca mountains as well, saritaḥ rivers, sarāṅsi ca lakes, paśyan seeing, sukhī bhaviṣyāmi shall be happy, tava you, nirvṛtiḥ astu shall cease (to lament).

Entering the forest full of various kinds of trees I shall be happy to view the mountains, rivers and the lakes and to eat fruits and roots. (Hence) do not grieve.
ēvaṅ sa rājā vyasanābhipannaḥ

śōkēna duḥkhēna ca tāmyamānaḥ.

āliṅgya putraṅ suvinaṣṭasaṅjñō

mōhaṅ gatō naiva cicēṣṭa kiṅñcit৷৷2.34.60৷৷


saḥ rājā that king, ēvam in this way, vyasanābhipannaḥ immersed in anguish, śōkēna with grief, duḥkhēna ca with sorrow, tāmyamānaḥ distressed, putram son, āliṅgya embracing, suvinaṣṭasaṅjñaḥ having lost consciousness, mōhaṅ gataḥ fainted, kiñcit a little, naiva cicēṣṭa did not move.

The king, immersed in anguish and distressed with tears of grief embraced his son and then fell down unconscious on the floor and lay motionless.
dēvyastata ssaṅrurudussamētā

stāṅ varjayitvā naradēvapatnīm.

rudan sumantrō৷৷pi jagāma mūrchāṅ

hāhākṛtaṅ tatra babhūva sarvam৷৷2.34.61৷৷


tataḥ thereupon, tām that, naradēvapatnīm the wife of the king (Kaikeyi), varjayitvā leaving, dēvyaḥ wives, samētāḥ together, saṅruruduḥ bewailed loudly, sumantrō.pi even Sumantra, rudan crying, mūrchām unconscious, jagāma obtained, tatra there, sarvam every one, hā hā kṛtam shouting alas, alas, babhūva became.

Thereupon all the queens except Kaikeyi, wailed loudly. Sumantra, too, cried and fell unconscious. The entire palace cried 'Alas, Alas'.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē catustriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
