[Rama reaches Srngiberapura on the bank of the Ganga--Guha, chief of the nishadas welcomes Rama.]

viśālān kōsalān ramyān yātvā lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ.

ayōdhyābhimukhō dhīmān prāñjalirvākyamabravīt৷৷2.50.1৷৷


lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ Lakshmana's elder brother, dhīmān sagacious, ramyān beautiful, viśālān vast, kōsalān kingdom of Kosala, yātvā gone beyond, ayōdhyābhimukhaḥ facing Ayodhya, prāñjaliḥ with folded hands, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Having crossed the vast, beautiful kingdom of Kosala, the sagacious elder brother of Lakshmana stood facing Ayodhya with folded palms and said:
āpṛcchē tvāṅ purīśrēṣṭhē kākutsthaparipālitē.

daivatāni ca yāni tvāṅ pālayanti vasanti ca৷৷2.50.2৷৷


kākutsthaparipālitē a city ruled by the Kakutsthas, purīśrēṣṭhē best among cities, tvām you, yāni daivatāni all those gods, vasanti inhabiting, pālayanti ca are guarding you also, āpṛcchē I am taking leave.

O Ayodhya, the best of cities ruled by those born in the Kakutstha race! I take leave of you and of all those gods inhabiting and guarding you.
nivṛttavanavāsastvāmanṛṇō jagatīpatēḥ.

punardrakṣyāmi mātrā ca pitrā ca saha saṅgataḥ৷৷2.50.3৷৷


jagatīpatēḥ lord of the world (king Dasaratha), anṛṇaḥ free from debt, nivṛttavanavāsaḥ having completed forest life, mātrā ca with mother, pitrā ca with father, saṅgataḥ re-united, tvām you, punaḥ again, drakṣyāmi will see.

On completion of exile and my filial obligations to king Dasaratha, lord of the world, discharged, I shall, re-united with my parents, see you again.
tatō rudhiratāmrākṣō bhujamudyamya dakṣiṇam.

aśrupūrṇamukhō dīnō.bravījjānapadaṅ janam৷৷2.50.4৷৷


tataḥ then, aśrupūrṇamukhaḥ face filled with tears, rudhiratāmrākṣaḥ eyes copper-red, dīnaḥ dejected, dakṣiṇam right, bhujam arm, udyamya having raised, jānapadam pertaining to villages, janam people, abravīt said.

He looked miserable, his copper-red eyes filled with tears. He raised his right hand
and said to the villagers who had come to see him:
anukrōśō dayā caiva yathārhaṅ mayi vaḥ kṛtaḥ.

ciraṅ duḥkhasya pāpīyō gamyatāmarthasiddhayē৷৷2.50.5৷৷


mayi in me, yathārham appropriately, vaḥ to you, dayā caiva kindness, anukrōśaḥ compassion, kṛtaḥ has been done, duḥkhasya of suffering, ciram for long, pāpīyaḥ is sinful, arthasiddhayē to discharge your duties, gamyatām go.

You have aptly shown your kindness and compassion to me. It is not proper to prolong one's grief. So do go and altend to your duties.
tē.bhivādya mahātmānaṅ kṛtvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam.

vilapantō narā ghōraṅ vyatiṣṭhanta kvacit kvacit৷৷2.50.6৷৷


tē narāḥ those people, mahātmānam high-souled, abhivādya having paid respect, pradakṣiṇaṅ cāpi circumambulation, kṛtvā having made, ghōram frightfully, vilapantaḥ lamenting, kvacit kvacit hither and thither, vyatiṣṭhanta stood (looking at him).

All of them paid their homage by circumambulating the high-souled Rama. Crying
bitterly, they stood here and there.
tathā vilapatāṅ tēṣāmatṛptānāṅ ca rāghavaḥ.

acakṣurviṣayaṅ prāyādyathārkaḥ kṣaṇadāmukhē৷৷2.50.7৷৷


atṛptānām not satisfied, tēṣām them, tathā in that manner, vilapatām lamenting, rāghavaḥ Rama, kṣaṇadāmukhē at nightfall, arkaḥ the Sun, yathā like that, acakṣurviṣayam out of sight, prāyāt went.

Not yet satisfied (they wanted to linger longer), they stood weeping, while Rama went out of sight just as the Sun disappears at nightfall.
tatō dhānyadhanōpētān dānaśīlajanān śivān.

akutaścidbhayān ramyāṅścaityayūpasamāvṛtān৷৷2.50.8৷৷

udyānāmravanōpētān sampannasalilāśayān.

tuṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇān gōkulākulasēvitān৷৷2.50.9৷৷

lakṣaṇīyānnarēndrāṇāṅ brahmaghōṣābhināditān.

rathēna puruṣavyāghraḥ kōsalānatyavartata৷৷2.50.10৷৷


tataḥ then, puruṣavyāghraḥ tiger (best) among men (Rama), dhānyadhanōpētān rich in wealth and foodgrain, dānaśīlajanān with charitable people, śivān auspicious, akutaścidbhayān free from fear, ramyān charming, caityayūpasamāvṛtān surrounded by sacrificial altars and posts, udyānāmravanōpētān filled with pleasure gardens and mango groves, sampannasalilāśayān tanks filled with water, tuṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇān full of contented and well-nourished people, gōkulākulasēvitān with herds of cattle, narēndrāṇām for kings, lakṣaṇīyān fit to be seen, brahmaghōṣābhināditān echoed with the sounds of Vedic recitations, kōsalān Kosala kingdom, rathēna by the chariot, atyavartata crossed over.

Rama, the best of men, crossed the auspicious land of Kosala which was worth seeing by kings. It looked charming with sacrificial posts and altars, pleasure gardens and mango groves and tanks filled with water. It was rich with herds of
cattle, wealth and foodgrains. It was inhabited by charitable, contented and well-nourished people free from fear from any quarter. And it reverberated with the sounds of Vedic recitations.
madhyēnamuditaṅ sphītaṅ ramyōdyānasamākulam.

rājyaṅ bhōgyaṅ narēndrāṇāṅ yayau dhṛtimatāṅ varaḥ৷৷2.50.11৷৷


dhṛtimatām among those endowed with fortitude, varaḥ best, muditam pleased, sphītam prosperous, ramyōdyānasamākulam full of ravishing gardens, narēndrāṇām of kings, bhōgyam fit to be enjoyed, rājyam of that kingdom, madhyēna in its middle, yayau went.

Rama, the greatest among those endowed with fortitude, travelled through the
middle of the kingdom which was pleasing, prosperous and full of ravishing gardens fit to be enjoyed by kings.
tata stripathagāṅ divyāṅ śivatōyāmaśaivalām.

dadarśa rāghavō gaṅgāṅ puṇyāmṛṣiniṣēvitām৷৷2.50.12৷৷


tatra there, rāghavaḥ Rama, tripathagām flowing in three worlds, ramyām beautiful, śivatōyām sacred waters, āśaivalām free from moss, puṇyām holy, ṛṣisēvitām worshipped by sages, gaṅgām Ganga, dadarśa saw.

There Rama saw the holy Ganga flowing in three (worlds) with her sacred waters, free from moss, and worshipped by sages.
āśramairavidūrasthaiḥ śrīmadbhissamalaṅkṛtām.

kālē.psarōbhirhṛṣṭābhi ssēvitāmbhōhradāṅ śivām৷৷2.50.13৷৷


avidūrasthaiḥ by those situated not far away, śrīmadbhiḥ by the graceful, āśramaiḥ by hermitages, samalaṅkṛtām adorned with, kālē at times, hṛṣṭābhiḥ delightful, apsarōbhiḥ by nymphs, sēvitāmbhōhradām sport in her lakes, śivām auspicious (Ganga).

The holy Ganga, adorned with graceful hermitages situated not far away is visited at times by delightful nymphs who sport in her lakes.
dēvadānavagandharvaiḥ kinnarairupaśōbhitām.

nānāgandharvapatnībhi ssēvitāṅ satataṅ śivām৷৷2.50.14৷৷


dēvadānavagandharvaiḥ by devatas, danavas, and gandharvas, kinnaraiḥ by kinneras, upaśōbhitām looking splendid, nānāgandharvapatnībhiḥ by wives of several gandharvas, satatam always, sēvitām, inhabited, śivām auspicious(Ganga).

The Ganga is graced by devatas, danavas, gandharvas and kinneras. Wives of several gandharvas always visit this auspicious river.
dēvā৷৷krīḍaśatākīrṇāṅ dēvōdyānaśatāyutām.

dēvārthamākāśagamāṅ vikhyātāṅ dēvapadminīm৷৷2.50.15৷৷


dēvā৷৷krīḍaśatākīrṇāṅ filled with hundreds of hills serving as sporting places for devatas dēvōdyānaśatāyutām hundreds of pleasure-gardens for devatas, dēvārtham for the sake of devatas, ākāśagamām flowing through heaven, dēvapadminīm as Devapadmini, where celestial lotuses grow, vikhyātām is well-known.

Since this river flows through heavens for the gods, it is well-known as 'Devapadmini' where celestial lotuses grow. The river embraces hundreds of hills serving as sporting places and pleasure-gardens for gods.
jalāghātāṭṭahāsōgrāṅ phēnanirmalahāsinīm.

kvacidvēṇīkṛtajalāṅ kvacidāvartaśōbhitām৷৷2.50.16৷৷


jalāghātāṭṭahāsōgrām ferocious with the sound of dashing waters resembling loud laughter, phēnanirmalahāsinīm with the sparkling smile of foam, kvacit at some places, vēṇīkṛtajalām with waters flowing straight like a maiden's braid, kvacit at some places, āvartaśōbhitām shining with whirlpools.

The sound of dashing waters of the Ganga is like her laughter and the foam like her sparkling smile. Here she flows straight like the braid of a maiden and there in whirlpools.
kvacit stimitagambhīrāṅ kvacidvēgajalākulām.

kvacidgambhīranirghōṣāṅ kvacidbhairavanisvanām৷৷2.50.17৷৷


kvacit at places, stimitagambhīrām was deep and quiet, kvacit at places, vēgajalākulām perturbed due to fast-flowing waters, kvacit at places, gambhīranirghōṣām making majestic sound, kvacit at some place, bhairavanisvanām makes dreadful sounds.

Here the Ganga runs deep but quiet, there she looks perturbed due to fast-flowing waters, here she flows with a deep groan and there with a dreadful roar.
dēvasaṅghāplutajalāṅ nirmalōtpalaśōbhitām.

kvacidābhōgapulināṅ kvacinnirmalavālukām৷৷2.50.18৷৷


dēvasaṅghāplutajalām in the waters of which hosts of celestials take ablutions, nirmalōtpalaśōbhitām decked with pure blue lilies, kvacit at some places, abhōgapulinām with curved banks, kvacit at some places, nirmalavālukām white sands.

Here hosts of celestials take their ablutions and there she shines with lilies of pure blue. Here her banks are curved and there her bed is dotted with patches of white sand.
haṅsasārasasaṅghuṣṭāṅ cakravākōpakūjitām.

sadā madaiśca vihagairabhisannāditāntarām৷৷2.50.19৷৷


haṅsasārasasaṅghuṣṭām reverberating with cries of swans and cranes, cakravākōpakūjitām filled with cries of chakravakas (ruddy geese), sadāmadaiḥ vihagaiḥ always filled with passionate birds, abhisannāditāntarām filled with sounds at intervals.

The river reverberates with the cries of swans, cranes and chakravakas (ruddy goose). It rings intermittently with the chirpings of birds charged with endless pasison.
kvacittīraruhairvṛkṣairmālābhirivaśōbhitām.

kvacitphullōtpalacchannāṅ kvacitpadmavanākulām৷৷2.50.20৷৷


kvacit at some places,tīraruhaiḥ grown on the banks,vṛkṣaiḥ with trees, mālābhiriva like garlands,śōbhitām decorated, kvacit at some places, phullōtpalacchannām covered with ful-blown water-lilies, kvacit at some places, padmavanākulām spread with multitudes of lotuses.

Here on her banks stand trees adorned as though with garlands, and there in her waters abound full-blown lilies and a forest of lotuses.
kvacitkumudaṣaṇḍaiśca kuḍmalairupaśōbhitām.

nānāpuṣparajōdhvastāṅ samadāmiva ca kvacit৷৷2.50.21৷৷


kvacit at some places, kumudaṣaṇḍaiśca with hosts of water-lilies, kuḍmalaiḥ half-blown flowers, upaśōbhitām adorned, nānāpuṣparajōdhvastām pollen from different kinds of flowers, kvacit in some places, samadām iva as if intoxicated with passion.

Here she is decked with hosts of water-lilies and half-blown flowers while elsewhere she looks intoxicated with the pollen fallen from various flowers.
vyapētamalasaṅghātāṅ maṇinirmaladarśanām.

diśāgajairvanagajai rmattaiśca varavāraṇaiḥ৷৷2.50.22৷৷

dēvōpavāhyaiśca muhussannāditavanāntarām.


vyapētamalasaṅghātām cleansed of heaps of impurities, maṇinirmaladarśanām appearing like a
transparent gem, diśāgajaiḥ by the elephants gaurding the quarters, mattaiśca by intoxicated ones, vanagajaiḥ wild elephants, dēvōpavāhaiḥ by those suitable for carrying gods, varavāraṇaiḥ with excellent elephants, muhuḥ repeatedly, sannāditavanāntarām resounding in the interiors of the forest.

The river, cleansed of heaps of impurities, appears like a transparent gem. The interiors of forests on her banks always resounds with the trumpeting of mighty, intoxicated, wild elephants guarding the quarters, fit to be the vehicles of gods.
pramadāmiva yatnēna bhūṣitāṅ bhūṣaṇōttamaiḥ৷৷2.50.23৷৷

phalaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kisalayairvṛtāṅ gulmairdvijaistathā.

śiṅśumāraiśca nakraiśca bhujaṅgaiśca niṣēvitām৷৷2.50.24৷৷


phalaiḥ with fruits, puṣpaiḥ with flowers, kisalayaiḥ with tender leaves or shoots, gulmaiḥ with shrubs, tathā similarly, dvijaiḥ with birds, vṛtām encompassed, bhūṣaṇōttamaiḥ with excellent ornaments, yatnēna carefully, bhūṣitām decorated, pramadāmiva like a woman, śiṅśumāraiśca small whales, nakraiśca with crocodiles, bhujaṅgaiśca with serpents, niṣēvitām is served.

Just like a lady, Ganga is decorated with the best of ornaments; her banks are filled with fruits, flowers, tender leaves or shoots and (flowering) shrubs. It is inhabited by birds and brahmins and infested with sisumaras (small whales), crocodiles and serpents.
viṣṇupādacyutāṅ divyāmapāpāṅ pāpanāśinīm.

tāṅ śaṅkarajaṭājūṭādbhraṣṭāṅ sāgaratējasā৷৷2.50.25৷৷

samudramahiṣīṅ gaṅgāṅ sārasakrauñcanāditām.

āsasāda mahābāhuḥ śṛṅgibērapuraṅ prati৷৷2.50.26৷৷


mahābāhuḥ mighty-armed, viṣṇupādacyutām dropped from the feet of lord Visnu, divyām divine, apāpām sinless, pāpanāśinīm destroyer of sins, sāgaratējasā due to the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha), śaṅkara jaṭājūṭāt from the matted hair of lord Siva, bhraṣṭām
dropped, samudramahiṣīm consort of the Ocean, sārasakrauñcanāditām echoed with the cries of kraunchas and herons, tāṅ gaṅgām that Ganga, śṛṅgibērapuraṅ prati towards Srngiberapura, āsasāda reached.

Mighty-armed Rama reached Srngaberapura on the bank of this consort of the ocean, this Ganga loud with the cries of kraunchas and herons. This sinless, divine Ganga, destroyer of sins who flows from the feet of lord Visnu and by the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha) emerged from the matted locks of lord Siva.
tāmūrmikalilāvartāmanvavēkṣya mahārathaḥ.

sumantramabravītsūtamihaivādya vasāmahē৷৷2.50.27৷৷


mahārathaḥ great chariot-warrior, ūrmikalilāvartām river full of tumultuous waves with whirlpools, tām that, anvavēkṣya on beholding, sūtam charioteer, sumantram Sumantra, abravīt said, adya today, atraiva here itself, vasāmahē will spend.

Beholding river Ganga full of waves and whirlpools, the great chariot-warrior (Rama) said to Sumantra: We shall spend the night here.
avidūrādayaṅ nadyā bahupuṣpapravālavān.

sumahāniṅgudīvṛkṣō vasāmō.traiva sārathē!৷৷2.50.28৷৷


sārathē! O charioteer, nadyāḥ river's, avidūrāt not far from, bahupuṣpapravālavān having many flowers and budding leaves, sumahān very large, ayam this, iṅgudīvṛkṣaḥ Ingudi tree, atraiva here itself, vasāmaḥ shall stay.

O charioteer! there is a very large ingudi (almond) tree not far from the river, luxuriant with flowers and budding leaves. We shall stay there tonight.
drakṣyāma ssaritāṅ śrēṣṭhāṅ sammānyasalilāṅ śivām.

dēvadānavagandharvamṛgamānuṣapakṣiṇām৷৷2.50.29৷৷


dēvadānavagandharvamṛgamānuṣapakṣiṇām for devas, danavas, gandharvas, beasts, serpents, men and birds, śivām auspicious one, sammānyasalilām a river of venerable (holy) waters, saritāṅ śrēṣṭhām best among rivers, drakṣyāmaḥ we shall see.

We shall watch Ganga, the best among rivers, whose holy waters are respected by gods, demons, gandharvas, beasts, serpents, men and birds alike.
lakṣmaṇaśca sumantraśca bāḍhamityēva rāghavam.

uktvā tamiṅgudīvṛkṣaṅ tadōpayayaturhayaiḥ৷৷2.50.30৷৷


lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana, sumantraśca Sumantra, rāghavam Rama, bāḍhamityēva 'Be it so', uktvā saying, tadā then, hayaiḥ with horses, tam that, iṅgudīvṛkṣam ingudi tree, upayayatuḥ both
approached.

Lakshmana and Sumantra agreed with Rama, saying 'Be it so' and turned the horses towards that ingudi tree.
rāmō.bhiyāya taṅ ramyaṅ vṛkṣamikṣvākunandanaḥ.

rathādavātarattasmātsabhārya ssahalakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷2.50.31৷৷


ikṣvākunandanaḥ the delight of the Ikshvakus, rāmaḥ Rama, ramyam beautiful, taṅ vṛkṣam that tree, abhiyāya having reached, sabhāryaḥ with his consort, sahalakṣmaṇaḥ with Lakshmana, tasmāt from that, rathāt chariot, avātarat alighted.

Rama, delight of the Ikshvakus, along with his consort and Lakshmana reached that beautiful tree and alighted from the chariot.
sumantrō.pyavatīryāsmānmōcayitvā hayōttamān.

vṛkṣamūlagataṅ rāmamupatasthē kṛtāñjaliḥ৷৷2.50.32৷৷


sumantrō.pi Sumantra also, asmāt from that chariot, avatīrya having alighted, hayōttamān the best of horses, mōcayitvā having unyoked, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded palms, vṛkṣamūlagatam sitting
at the foot of the tree, rāmam Rama, upatasthē stood near.

Sumantra also got off the chariot, unyoked the horses and with folded palms stood near Rama who had already reached the foot of the tree.
tatra rājā guhō nāma rāmasyātmasamassakhā.

niṣādajātyō balavān sthapatiścēti viśrutaḥ৷৷2.50.33৷৷


tatra there, rāmasya to Rama, ātmasamaḥ like his own self, sakhā friend, niṣādajātyaḥ hunter by race, balavān powerful, sthapatiścēti lord of nishada tribe, viśrutaḥ well-known, guhō nāma Guha by name, rājā king.

There lived the mighty king Guha who was born in the race of nishadas (hunters) and became famous as their lord. He was a friend to Rama who was like his own self.
sa śṛtvā puruṣavyāghraṅ rāmaṅ viṣayamāgatam.

vṛddhaiḥ parivṛtō.mātyaiḥ jñātibhiścābhyupāgataḥ৷৷2.50.34৷৷


saḥ he, puruṣavyāghram (best) among men, rāmam Rama, viṣayam to his region, āgatam having arrived, śṛtvā having heard, vṛdhdai: by the aged, amātyaiḥ by the ministers, jñātibhiśca by the people of his clan, parivṛtaḥ surrounded by, abhyupāgataḥ approached him.

Having come to know that Rama, the best among men, had arrived in his region Guha accompanied by senior ministers and people of his clan came to greet him.
tatō niṣādādhipatiṅ dṛṣṭvā dūrādupasthitam.

saha saumitriṇā rāma ssamāgacchadguhēna saḥ৷৷2.50.35৷৷


tataḥ then, upasthitam approaching, niṣādādhipatiṅ king of the nishadas, dūrāt from a distance, dṛṣṭvā having seen, saumitriṇā saha along with Lakshmana, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, guhēna with Guha, samāgacchat went forward.

When Rama and Lakshmana saw from a distance that Guha, king of the nishadas, was approaching them, they went forward to receive him.
tamārtassampariṣvajya guhō rāghavamabravīt.

yathā.yōdhyā tathēyaṅ tē rāma kiṅ karavāṇi tē৷৷2.50.36৷৷

īdṛśaṅ hi mahābāhō kaḥ prāpsyatyatithiṅ priyam.


ārtaḥ in anguish, guhaḥ Guha, taṅ rāghavam to Rama, sampariṣvajya having embraced, abravīt said, rāma O Rama, tē to you, ayōdhyā Ayodhya, yathā as how, iyam this city, tathā like that, tē to you, kim what, karavāṇi shall I do?, mahābāhō O mighty-armed one, īdṛśam such, priyam beloved, atithim guest, kaḥ who, prāpsyati will get.

Overwhelmed with grief (to see Rama in bark), Guha embraced Rama and said This is just like Ayodhya to you. What can I do for you? O mighty-armed Rama, who can have the good fortune of receiving such a beloved guest like you?
tatō guṇavadannādyamupādāya pṛthagvidham৷৷2.50.37৷৷

arghyaṅ cōpānayatkṣipraṅ vākyaṅ cēdamuvāca ha.


tataḥ thereafter, pṛthagvidham various kinds of, guṇavat of good quality, annādyam rice and other eatables, upādāya having brought, kṣipram quickly, arghyaṅ ca drinks also, upānayat he brought, idam vākyaṅ ca these words, uvāca ha also spoke.

Thereafter he quickly brought rice and various kinds of tasty food and drink as welcome offerings and said to him:
svāgataṅ tē mahābāhō! tavēyamakhilā mahī৷৷2.50.38৷৷

vayaṅ prēṣyā bhavānbhartā sādhu rājyaṅ praśādhi naḥ.


mahābāhō O mighty-armed one, tē to you, svāgatam welcome, akhilā entire, iyaṅ mahī this land, tava is yours, vayam we, prēṣyāḥ are attendants, bhavān you, bhartā master, naḥ for us, rājyam this
kingdom, sādhu worthy of, praśādhi rule.

O mighty-armed prince, welcome to you! This entire land belongs to you. You are our master and we, your servants. Rule this kingdom happily.
bhakṣyaṅ bhōjyaṅ ca pēyaṅ ca lēhyaṅcēdamupasthitam৷৷2.50.39৷৷

śayanāni ca mukhyāni vājināṅ khādanaṅ ca tē.


bhakṣyam food to be eaten by biting, bhōjyam food to be eaten by chewing, pēyam food fit for drinking, lēhyaṅ ca food fit for licking, mukhyāni excellent, śayanāni beds, tē for you, vājinām for horses, khādanaṅ ca also fodder, idam here, upasthitam awaits.

All kinds of food to be taken by biting, chewing, drinking and licking are here for you. There is an excellent bed ready. There are also enough fodder for the horses.
ēvaṅ bruvāṇaṅ tu guhaṅ rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha৷৷2.50.40৷৷

arcitāścaiva hṛṣṭāśca bhavatā sarvathā vayam.

padbhyāmabhigamāccaiva snēhasandarśanēna ca৷৷2.50.41৷৷


ēvam in this way, bruvāṇam speaking, guham to Guha, rāghavaḥ Rama, pratyuvāca ha replied, vayam we, sarvathā in every way, bhavatā by you, padbhyām on foot, abhigamāccaiva coming to meet us, snēhasandarśananē ca showing your friendliness, arcitāścaiva we have been worshipped, hṛṣṭāśca also pleased.

Hearing (the words of) Guha, Rama replied By coming on foot to meet us and by displaying your friendliness, you have amply honoured us and pleased us.
bhujābhyāṅ sādhu pīnābhyāṅ pīḍayanvākyamabravīt৷৷

diṣṭyā tvāṅ guha! paśyāmi hyarōgaṅ saha bāndhavaiḥ.

api tē kuśalaṅ rāṣṭrē mitrēṣu ca dhanēṣu ca৷৷2.50.42৷৷


pīnābhyām strong, bhujābhyām with his arms, sādhu tightly, pīḍayan pressing together, vākyam words, abravīt said, guha O Guha, diṣṭyā luckily, saha bāndhavai: with all relations, arōgam hale and hearty, tvām you, paśyāmi am seeing, tē your, rāṣṭrē kingdom, mitrēṣu in friends, dhanēṣu ca wealth also, api kuśalam (hope) all is well.

Rama embracing him tightly with his strong arms said, O Guha! it is fortunate that I am able to see you and your relations in good health. Hope, all is well with your friends, kingdom and (collection of) revenue.
yattvidaṅ bhavatā kiñcitprītyā samupakalpitam.

sarvaṅ tadanujānāmi na hi vartē pratigrahē৷৷2.50.43৷৷


bhavatā by you, prītyā with affection, idam now, yat kiñcit whatever, samukalpitam has been arranged, tat sarvam all that, anujānāmi I am accepting (giving you back), pratigrahē in acceptance, na vartē hi unable.

I must give you back whatever you have offered me so affectionately. I am not in a position to accept anything.
kuśacīrājinadharaṅ phalamūlāśinaṅ ca mām.

viddhi praṇihitaṅ dharmē tāpasaṅ vanagōcaram৷৷2.50.44৷৷


mām me, kuśacīrājinadharam wearing garments made of bark, kusa grass and antelope skin, phalamūlāśinam susbsisting on fruits and roots, dharmē in righteousness, praṇihitam initiated, vanagōcaram wandering in the forest, tāpasam like an ascetic, viddhi you may know.

You must know me as an ascetic devoted to righeousness,and as a wanderer in the forest wearing garments made of bark, kusa grass and antelope skin, subsisting on fruits and roots.
aśvānāṅ khādanēnāhamarthī nānyēna kēnacit.

ētāvatā.tra bhavatā bhaviṣyāmi supūjitaḥ৷৷2.50.45৷৷


aham I, aśvānām for horses, khādanēna with fodder, arthī I am a seeker, anyēna by other thing, kēnacit with any one, na not, atra here, ētāvatā to this extent, bhavatā by you, supūjitaḥ well-honoured, bhaviṣyāmi shall become.

What I now need is fodder for the horses. Nothing more. If you can do this much, I'll deem it a great honour.
ētē hi dayitā rājñaḥ piturdaśarathasya mē.

ētaissuvihitairaśvai bhaviṣyāmyahamarcitaḥ৷৷2.50.46৷৷


ētē these horses, mē pituḥ my father's, daśarathasya rājñaḥ king Dasaratha's, dayitāḥ liked, suvihitaiḥ well-tended, ētaiḥ by these, aśvaiḥ with horses, aham I, arcitaḥ worshipped, bhaviṣyāmi shall become.

If these horses which are the favourites of my father, king Dasaratha are well-fed, I shall consider myself honoured.
aśvānāṅ pratipānaṅ ca khādanaṅ caiva sō.nvaśāt.

guhastatraiva puruṣāṅ stvaritaṅ dīyatāmiti৷৷2.50.47৷৷


saḥ that, guhaḥ Guha, tatraiva there itself, puruṣān men, aśvānām for the horses, pratipānaṅ ca liquids like water, khādanaṅ caiva forage, tvaritam quickly, dīyatāmiti be given, anvaśāt ordered.

Guha ordered the men standing there Give these horses liquids like water and forage.
tataścīrōttarāsaṅgaḥ sandhyāmanvāsya paścimām.

jalamēvādadē bhōjyaṅ lakṣmaṇēnā৷৷hṛtaṅ svayam৷৷2.50.48৷৷


tataḥ then, cīrōttarāsaṅga: upper robe, paścimāṅ sandhyām Sandhya, anvāsya offering oblations,
lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, svayam himself, āhṛtam which has been brought, jalamēva water only, bhōjyam as food, ādadē partook.

Rama wearing the upper garment then offered oblations to Sandhya and partook of only water as refreshment, brought by Lakshmana.
tasya bhūmau śayānasya pādau prakṣālya lakṣmaṇaḥ.

sabhāryasya tatō.bhyētya tasthau vṛkṣamupāśritaḥ৷৷2.50.49৷৷


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, bhūmau on the ground, śayānasya for sleeping, sabhāryasya with his consort, tasya his, pādau feet, prakṣālya having washed, tataḥ then, abhyētya having gone towards, vṛkṣam tree, upāśritaḥ took refuge, tasthau he stood.

Lakshmana washed the feet of Rama who along with his consort lay upon the ground, and returned to take rest under the tree.
guhō.pi saha sūtēna saumitrimanubhāṣayan.

anvajāgrattatō rāmamapramattō dhanurdharaḥ৷৷2.50.50৷৷


guhō.pi Guha also, sūtēna saha along with the charioteer, saumitrim to Lakshmana, anubhāṣayan while talking, tataḥ then, dhanurdharaḥ bow in hand, apramattaḥ by being vigilant, rāmam about Rama, anvajāgrat kept awake.

Guha, bow in hand, conversing with Sumantra and Soumitri (Son of Sumitra, Lakshmana) then kept vigil over Rama by remaining awake (all night).
tathā śayānasya tatō.sya dhīmatō

yaśasvinō dāśarathērmahātmanaḥ.

adṛṣṭaduḥkhasya sukhōcitasya sā

tadāvyatīyāya cirēṇa śarvarī৷৷2.50.51৷৷


tataḥ then, adṛṣṭaduḥkhasya one who never experienced troubles, sukhōcitasya used to comforts, dhīmataḥ sagacious, yaśasvinaḥ illustrious, mahātmanaḥ magnanimous, tadā then, tathā like that, śayānasya lying down, asya dāśarathēḥ for this son of Dasaratha (Rama), sā that, śarvarī night, cirēṇa as of long duration, vyatīyāya passed.

As the wise, illustrious, magnanimous son of Dasaratha (Rama) who was used to pleasures and not discomfort lay on the ground, the long night slipped away.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē pañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftieth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
