[Rama, Sita and Lakshmana depart for Dandaka forest -- reach the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja -- seek advice for a dwelling -- place -- Bharadwaja suggests Chitrakuta at the confluence of rivers Ganga and Yamuna -- they set out after a night's stay.]

ते तु तस्मिन्महावृक्षे उषित्वा रजनीं शिवाम्।

विमलेऽभ्युदिते सूर्ये तस्माद्देशात्प्रतस्थिरे।।2.54.1।।


ते they (Rama, Sita and Lakshmana), शिवाम् auspicious, रजनीम् night, तस्मिन् that, महावृक्षे big tree, उषित्वा having remained, विमले when the bright, सूर्ये Sun, अभ्युदिते had risen, तस्मात् देशात् from that region, प्रतस्थिरे set out.

They (Rama, Sita and Lakshmana) spent that auspicious night under that great tree and set out from there after the bright sun rose.
यत्र भागीरथीं गङ्गां यमुनाभिप्रवर्तते।

जग्मुस्तं देशमुद्दिश्य विगाह्य सुमहद्वनम्।।2.54.2।।

ते भूमिभागान्विविधान् देशांश्चापि मनोरमान्।

अदृष्टपूर्वान् पश्यन्तस्तत्र तत्र यशश्विनः।।2.54.3।।


यशश्विनः illustrious, ते they, सुमहत् very great, वनम् forest, विगाह्य having entered, विविधान् different, भूमिभागान् regions of the land, अदृष्टपूर्वान् hithertounseen, मनोरमान् enchanting, देशांश्चापि regions also, तत्र तत्र here and there, पश्यन्तः viewing, यमुना Yamuna, यत्र where, भागीरथीम् Bhagirathi, गङ्गाम् Ganga's, अभिप्रवर्तते flows into, तं देशम् that place, उद्दिश्य intending (to reach), जग्मुः went.

Illustrious Rama, Sita and Lakshmana entered the deep forest and saw the different regions of the land and other enchanting places which they had never seen before and proceeded towards the region where the river Yamuna merged with Bhagirathi Ganga.
यथा क्षेमेण गच्छन् स पश्यंश्च विविधान् द्रुमान्।

निवृत्तमात्रे दिवसे रामः सौमित्रिमब्रवीत्।।2.54.4।।


सः रामः that Rama, यथा क्षेमेण on a safe way, गच्छन् going, विविधान् various, द्रुमान् trees, पश्यंश्च looking at, दिवसे day, निवृत्तमात्रे when ended, सौमित्रिम् to Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said.

Walking on the safe path and observing various kinds of trees Rama said to Lakshmana at the end of the day:
प्रयागमभितः पश्य सौमित्रे धूममुन्नतम्।

अग्नेर्भगवतः केतुं मन्ये सन्निहितो मुनिः।।2.54.5।।


सौमित्रे O son of Sumitra, Lakshmana, प्रयागम् अभितः near Prayaga, उन्नतम् rising high, भगवतः of the venerable, अग्नेः fire's, केतुम् the banner, धूमम् smoke, पश्य look, मुनिः the sage, सन्निहितः close by, मन्ये I think.

O son of Sumitra, look at the column of smoke rising like the banner of the venerable firegod near Prayaga. I think an ascetic dwells nearby.
नूनं प्राप्ताः स्म सम्भेदं गङ्गायमुनयोर्वयम्।

तथा हि श्रूयते शब्दो वारिणो वारिघट्टितः।।2.54.6।।


वयम् we, गङ्गायमुनयोः Ganga and Yamuna, सम्भेदम् confluence, प्राप्ताः स्म have reached, नूनम् it is certain, तथा हि as for, वारिघट्टितः dashed by waters, वारिणः waters, शब्दः sound, श्रूयते is heard.

We have surely reached the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna which can be ascertained from the sounds of clashing water.
दारूणि परिभिन्नानि वनजैरुपजीविभिः।

भरद्वाजाश्रमे चैते दृश्यन्ते विविधा द्रुमाः।।2.54.7।।


वनजैः by the foresters, उपजीविभिः those people subsisting on them, परिभिन्नानि are broken, दारूणि logs of wood, भरद्वाजाश्रमे in the hermitage of Bharadwaja, एते all these, विविधाः different, द्रुमाश्च trees also, दृश्यन्ते are seen.

Here are logs of wood cut into pieces by forestdwellers, living on forest products. You can see various trees near the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja.
धन्विनौ तौ सुखं गत्वा लम्बमाने दिवाकरे।

गङ्गायमुनयोस्सन्धौ प्रापतुर्निलयं मुनेः।।2.54.8।।


धन्विनौ the two archers, तौ those two, सुखम् comfortably, गत्वा having gone, दिवाकरे Sun, लम्बमाने was hanging, गङ्गायमुनयोः of Ganga and yamuna, सन्धौ at the confluence, मुनेः of sage Bharadwaja, निलयम् hermitage, प्रापतुः arrived.

The two archers (Rama and Lakshmana) reached comfortably (walking at an easy pace) by evening the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja near the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna.
रामस्त्वाश्रममासाद्य त्रासयन्मृगपक्षिणः।

गत्वा मुहूर्तमध्वानं भरद्वाजमुपागमत्।।2.54.9।।


रामः Rama, अश्रमम् hermitage, आसाद्य having approached, मृगपक्षिणः animals and birds, त्रासयन् frightening, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, अध्वानम् on the path, गत्वा proceeding, भरद्वाजम् Bharadhwaja, उपागमत् reached.

Seeing Rama approaching the hermitage the deer and the birds were frightened. Proceeding on the path, for a while Rama reached (the place of) Bharadwaja.
ततस्त्वाश्रमासाद्य मुनेर्दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणौ।

सीतयानुगतौ वीरौ दूरादेवावतस्थतुः।।2.54.10।।


ततः then, सीतया by Sita, अनुगतौ followed, वीरौ those two heroes, आश्रमम् hermitage, आसाद्य having reached, मुनेः ascetic's, दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणौ wishing to see, दूरादेव at a distance, अवतस्थतुः stood.

Thereafter the two heroes followed by Sita arrived at the hermitage and, wishing to see the sage, waited at a distance.
स प्रविश्य महात्मानमृषिं शिष्यगणैर्वृतम्।

संशितव्रतमेकाग्रं तपसा लब्धचक्षुषम्।।2.54.11।।

हुताग्निहोत्रं दृष्ट्वैव महाभागं कृताञ्जलिः।

रामः सौमित्रिणा सार्धं सीतया चाभ्यवादयत्।।2.54.12।।


सः रामः Rama, प्रविश्य having entered, संशितव्रतम् one practising rigorous austerities, एकाग्रम् with concentration of mind, तपसा with asceticism, लब्दचक्षुषम् one who has obtained spiritual insight, हुताग्निहोत्रम् one who has kindled fire in sacrificial rituals, महाभागम् distinguished, शिष्यगणैः with disciples, वृतम् surrounded by, महात्मानम् highsouled, ऋषिम् sage, दृष्ट्वैव having seen, सौमित्रिणा Lakshmana, सार्धम् along with, सीतया च Sita too, अभ्यवादयत् paid obeisance.

Rama entered the hermitage and saw that highsouled Bharadwaja surrounded by his disciples. He was a distinguished sage who (himself) kindled sacrficial fires and acquired spiritual insight by practising rigid austerities with concentration of mind and ascetic powers. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita paid their obeisance to that great sage.
न्यवेदयत चात्मानं तस्मै लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः।

पुत्रौ दशरथस्यावां भगवन् रामलक्ष्मणौ।।2.54.13।।


लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama), तस्मै to that sage, आत्मानम् himself, न्यवेदयत introduced, भगवन् O venerable one, अवाम् both of us, दशरथस्य Dasaratha's, पुत्रौ sons, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana.

Lakshmana's elder brother (Rama) introduced himself (to Bharadwaja), O venerable one, we are both sons of Dasaratha, Rama and Lakshmana.
भार्या ममेयं वैदेही कल्याणी जनकात्मजा।

मां चानुयाता विजनं तपोवनमनिन्दिता।।2.54.14।।


इयम् this, कल्याणी auspicious one, मम my, भार्या consort, जनकात्मजा daughter of Janaka, वैदेही Vaidehi (Sita), अनिन्दिता irreproachable, माम् me, विजनम् desolate, तपोवनम् penacegrove, अनुयाता has followed.

This blessed one is my consort, Sita, daughter of Janaka. Irreproachable she has followed me to the desolate grove of penance (hermitage).
पित्रा प्रव्राज्यमानं मां सौमित्रिरनुज प्रियः।

अयमन्वगमद्भ्राता वनमेव दृढव्रतः।।2.54.15।।


दृढव्रतः of firm resolve, भ्राता brother, अनुजः younger, प्रियः dear, अयं सौमित्रिः this son of Sumitra, पित्रा by father, प्रव्राज्यमानम् being sent on exile, माम् me, वनमेव to the forest, अन्वगमत् followed.

This is the son of Sumitra, my beloved younger brother, a man of firm resolve. He has accompanied me when I was sent on exile to the forest by my father.
पित्रा नियुक्ता भगवन् प्रवेक्ष्यामस्तपोवनम्।

धर्ममेव चरिष्याम स्तत्र मूलफलाशनाः।।2.54.16।।


भगवन् O venerable one, पित्रा by father, नियुक्ताः ordered by, तपोवनम् penancegrove प्रवेक्ष्यामः we will enter, तत्र there, मूलफलाशनाः subsisting on roots and fruits, धर्ममेव following righteous ways, चरिष्यामः will practise.

O venerable one on my father's command we entered the desolate forest of penance. Subsisting on roots and fruits, I shall practise the righteous way of life.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रस्य धीमतः।

उपानयत धर्मात्मा गामर्घ्यमुदकं ततः।।2.54.17।।


धर्मात्मा sage Bharadwaja, धीमतः of the sagacious, तस्य that, राजपुत्रस्य prince's, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having heard, ततः then, गाम् bull, अर्घ्यम् for arghya, उदकम् water, उपानयत brought.

Sage Bharadwaja heard the words of sagacious Rama and offered a bull, water (for washing feet) and arghya (offering to a guest).
नानाविधानन्नरसान् वन्यमूलफलाश्रयान्।

तेभ्यो ददौ तप्ततपा वासं चैवाभ्यकल्पयत्।।2.54.18।।


तप्ततपाः one who practised severe penance, नानाविधान् different kinds of, वन्यमूलफलाश्रयान् made from the fruits and roots, अन्नरसान् food and drink, तेभ्यः for them, ददौ gave, वासं चैव restingplace also, अकल्पयत् arranged.

The ascetic who practised severe penance offered them different kinds of food and drink made from roots and fruits available in the forest. He also provided them a place to rest in.
मृगपक्षिभिरासीनो मुनिभिश्च समन्ततः।

राममागतमभ्यर्च्य स्वागतेनाहतं मुनिः।।2.54.19।।


मृगपक्षिभिः by animals and birds, मुनिभिश्च by hermits also, समन्ततः surrounded, आसीनः seated, मुनिः sage (Bharadwaja), आगतम् arrived, तं रामम् to that Rama, स्वागतेन with welcome, अभ्यर्च्य having paid homage, आह uttered.

There the sage sat, surrounded by hermits, animals and birds after having welcomed Rama with due honour.
प्रतिगृह्य च तामर्चामुपविष्टं स राघवम्।

भरद्वाजोऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं धर्मयुक्तमिदं तदा।।2.54.20।।


सः भरद्वाजः that Bharadwaja, तदा then, ताम् that, अर्चाम् hospitality, प्रतिगृह्य having received, उपविष्टम् seated in front, राघवम् to Rama, धर्मयुक्तम् in conformity with righteousness, इदं वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Rama accepted the hospitality of Bharadwaja and took a seat in front of the sage, who spoke to him these words in conformity with righteousness:
चिरस्य खलु काकुत्स्थ पश्यामि त्वामिहागतम्।

श्रुतं तव मया चेदं विवासनमकारणम्।।2.54.21।।


काकुत्स्थ O descendant of the Kakutstha dynasty, चिरस्य after a long time, इह here, आगतम् arrived here, त्वाम् you, पश्यामि खलु I see indeed, अकारणम् without any reason, तव your, इदम् this, विवासनम् banishment, मया by me, श्रुतं च is heard too.

O descendant of the Kakutstha dynasty, I am able to see you on your arrival here after a long time. I have also heard about your unwarranted banishment.
अवकाशो विविक्तोऽयं महानद्योस्समागमे।

पुण्यश्च रमणीयश्च वसत्विह भवान् सुखम्।।2.54.22।।


महानद्योः of two great rivers, समागमे at the confluence, अयम् this, अवकाशः region, विविक्तः solitary, पुण्यश्च is also sacred, रमणीयश्च pleasant, भवान् you, इह here, सुखम् comfortably, वसतु can dwell.

This sacred and solitary region near the confluence of two great rivers (Ganga and Yamuna) is a pleasant place. You may stay here comfortably.
एवमुक्तस्तु वचनं भरद्वाजेन राघवः।

प्रत्युवाच शुभं वाक्यं रामः सर्वहिते रतः।।2.54.23।।


सर्वहिते for the wellbeing of all, रतः devoted, राघवः born in the dynasty of Raghu, रामः Rama, भरद्वाजेन by Bharadwaja, एवम् in this way, वचनम् these words, उक्तः having been addressed, शुभम् auspicious, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच spoke in reply.

Rama, ever devoted to the wellbeing of every one, heard Bharadwaja and replied to him with these auspicious words:
भगवन्नित आसन्नः पौरजानपदो जनः।

सुदर्शमिह मां प्रेक्ष्य मन्येऽहमिममाश्रमम्।।2.54.24।।

आगमिष्यति वैदेहीं मां चापि प्रेक्षको जनः।

अनेन कारणेनाहमिह वासं न रोचये।।2.54.25।।


भगवन् O venerable one, इतः from here, पौरजानपदः inhabiting towns and villages, जनः subjects, आसन्नः living closely, इह here, माम् me, सुदर्शम् easily to be seen, प्रेक्ष्य having seen, जनः people, वैदेहीम् Sita, मां चापि me too, प्रेक्षकः in order to see, इमम् आश्रमम् to this hermitage, आगमिष्यति will frequent, अहम् I, मन्ये think so, अनेन कारणेन for this reason, अहम् I, इह here, वासम् to reside, न रोचये do not desire.

O venerable sage, I feel the people living in nearby villages and towns, perceiving that we can be easily seen here, will frequent this ashram. This is the reason I don't wish to stay here.
एकान्ते पश्य भगवन्नाश्रमस्थानमुत्तमम्।

रमेत यत्र वैदेही सुखार्हा जनकात्मजा।।2.54.26।।


भगवन् revered one, सुखार्हा deserves comfort, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, वैदेही Vaidehi, यत्र where, रमेत may enjoy, एकान्ते in a solitary, उत्तमम् agreeable, आश्रमस्थानम् hermitage, पश्य see.

O revered one, Janaka's daughter (Sita) deserves comfort. Suggest a solitary and agreeable place for our hermitage where she can enjoy herself.
एतछ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं भरद्वाजो महामुनिः।

राघवस्य ततो वाक्यमर्थग्राहकमब्रवीत्।।2.54.27।।


महामुनिः great sage, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, राघवस्य Rama's, एतत् these, शुभम् auspicious, वाक्यम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, ततः after that, अर्थग्राहकम् conveying the meaning, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said.

On hearing the auspicious words of Rama conveying his intention, the great sage Bharadwaja replied to him thus:
दशक्रोश इतस्तात गिरिर्यत्रनिवत्स्यसि।

महर्षिसेवितः पुण्यः सर्वतः सुखदर्शनः।।2.54.28।।

गोलाङ्गूलानुचरितो वानरर्क्षनिषेवितः।

चित्रकूट इति ख्यातो गन्धमादनसन्निभः।।2.54.29।।


तात O dear, महर्षिसेवितः inhabited by sages, पुण्यः sacred, सर्वतः from all sides, सुखदर्शनः whose sight causes delight, गोलाङ्गूलानुचरितः full of wandering apes, वानरर्क्षनिषेवितः inhabited by monkeys and bears, चित्रकूटः इति by name Chitrakuta, ख्यातः wellknown, गन्धमादनसन्निभः like 'Gandhamadana' mountain, गिरिः mountain, इतः from here, दशक्रोशे at a distance of ten krosas, यत्र there, निवत्स्यसि you can live.

O my son ten krosas (about twenty miles) from here is a mountain wellknown as Chitrakuta, resembling 'Gandhamadana'. That mountain frequented by maharshis is sacred. It looks pleasant from all sides. Monkeys, apes and bears wander there and it is an appropriate place for you to live in.
यावता चित्रकूटस्य नरशृङ्गान्यवेक्षते।

कल्याणानि समाधत्ते न पापे कुरुते मनः।।2.54.30।।


नरः a man, यावता as long as, चित्रकूटस्य Chitrakuta mountain's, शृङ्गानि peaks, आवेक्षते beholds, कल्याणानि auspicious deeds, समाधत्ते will perform, पापे in sinful thoughts, मनः the mind, न कुरुते will not employ.

As long as one beholds the peaks of mount Chitrakuta, he will be inspired to do good deeds and will not employ his mind in sinful thoughts.
ऋषयस्तत्र बहवो विहृत्य शरदां शतम्।

तपसा दिवमारूढाः कपालशिरसा सह।।2.54.31।।


तत्र there, बहवः many, ऋषयः ascetics, शरदां शतम् for hundreds of years, तपसा with austerities, विहृत्य having roamed about, कपालशिरसा सह with the skulls on their heads, दिवम् heaven, आरूढाः have ascended.

On the Chitrakuta mountain many ascetics wandered about (lived) for hundreds of years carrying on penance. In the process they became so much emaciated that they looked as if they were left (only) with the skulls on their heads. (In the end) they ascended heaven.
प्रविविक्तमहं मन्ये तं वासं भवतस्सुखम्।

इह वा वनवासाय वस राम मया सह।।2.54.32।।


राम Rama, प्रविविक्तम् solitary, तं वासम् that abode, भवतः for your, सुखम् happiness, अहम् I, मन्ये think, मया सह with me, इह वा or here, वनवासाय for the period of banishment, वस you may live.

O Rama, I think you will enjoy your stay there in a solitary place. Or else, you may live with me here during the period of banishment.
स रामं सर्वकामैस्तं भरद्वाजः प्रियातिथिम्।

सभार्यं सह च भ्रात्रा प्रतिजग्राह धर्मवित्।।2.54.33।।


धर्मवित् one who knows his duty, सः भरद्वाजः that Bharadwaja, सभार्यम् with his consort, भ्रात्रा सह with brother, च and, प्रियातिथिम् beloved guest, तं रामम् that Rama, सर्वकामैः with all desires, प्रतिजग्राह honoured.

Bharadwaja, who knows his duty honoured Rama, his beloved guest with his consort and brother by extending all kinds of hospitality.
तस्य प्रयागे रामस्य तं महर्षिमुपेयुषः।

प्रपन्ना रजनी पुण्याः चित्राः कथयतः कथाः।।2.54.34।।


प्रयागे at Prayaga, तं महर्षिम् that great sage, उपेयुषः sitting near, रामस्य of Rama, चित्राः interesting, कथाः tales, कथयतः while conversing, पुण्या that holy, रजनी night, प्रपन्ना had set in.

At Prayaga, while the great sage Bharadwaja was narrating to Rama sitting near him several interesting anecdotes, the holy night set in.
सीतातृतीयः काकुत्स्थः परिश्रान्तः सुखोचितः।

भरद्वाजाश्रमे रम्ये तां रात्रिमवसत्सुखम्।।2.54.35।।


सुखोचितः used to comforts, परिश्रान्तः exhausted, सीतांतृतीयः Sita counted as the third, काकुत्स्थ: Rama, रम्ये in the lovely, भरद्वाजाश्रमे hermitage of Bharadwaja, तां रात्रिम् that night, सुखम् happily, अवसत् stayed.

The exhausted scion of the Kakutsthas, used to comforts, stayed in the lovely hermitage of Bharadwaja for the night with Sita, as the third member (of the group).
प्रभातायां रजन्यां तु भरद्वाजमुपागमत्।

उवाच नरशार्दूलो मुनिं ज्वलिततेजसम्।।2.54.36।।


नरशार्दूलः tiger (best) among men, रजन्याम् after the night, प्रभातायाम् at dawn, भरद्वाजम् to Bharadwaja, उपागमत् approached, ज्वलिततेजसम् with blazing lustre, मुनिम् the sage, उवाच said.

When the night passed into dawn, Rama the best of men approached the resplendent Bharadwaja and said.
शर्वरीं भगवन्नद्य सत्यशील तवाश्रमे।

उषिताः स्मेह वसतिमनुजानातु नो भवान्।।2.54.37।।


सत्यशील O truthful, भगवन् O venerable, इह here, तव आश्रमे in your hermitage, शर्वरीम् the night, उषिता स्म we have spent, अद्य to day, नः us, भवान् you, वसतिम् dwellingplace, अनुजानातु permit.

O venerable sage devoted to truth, we have spent the night in your hermitage. Please permit us to depart for the dwellingplace (suggested by you).
रात्र्यां तु तस्यां व्युष्टायां भरद्वाजोऽब्रवीदिदम्।

मधुमूलफलोपेतं चित्रकूटं व्रजेति ह।।2.54.38।।


तस्याम् रात्र्याम् when that night, व्युष्टायाम् had come to a close, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, मधुमूलफलोपेतम् abounding in honey, roots, and fruits, चित्रकूटम् to Chitrakuta, व्रज go, इति thus, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

When the night came to a close, Bharadwaja said (to Rama): You may proceed to Chitrakuta which abounds in roots, fruits and honey.
वासमौपयिकं मन्ये तव राम महाबल

नानानगगणोपेतः किन्नरोरगसेवितः।

मयूरनादाभिरुतो गजराजनिषेवितः।।2.54.39।।

गम्यतां भवता शैल श्चित्रकूटः स विश्रुतः।

पुण्यश्च रमणीयश्च बहुमूलफलायुतः।।2.54.40।।


महाबल O mighty one, राम Rama, तव your, औपयिकम् right, वासम् place for your stay, मन्ये I think, नानानगगणोपेतः full of various types of trees, किन्नरोरगसेवितः inhabited by kinneras, serpents, मयूरनादाभिरुतः echoing with cries of peacocks, गजराजनिषेवितः frequented by mighty tuskers, पुण्यश्च sacred, रमणीयश्च delightful, बहुमूलफलायुतः abounding in many roots and fruits, विश्रुतः wellknown, सः that, चित्रकूटः Chitrakuta, शैलः mountain, भवता by you, गम्यताम् go.

O mighty Rama, I think mount Chitrakuta is the right place for you to stay. Go there. That mountain is full of trees of every kind, is inhabited by kinneras and uragas (serpents). It echoes with the cries of peacocks, is frequented by mighty tuskers. Filled with fruits and roots, it is sacred and pleasant.
तत्र कुञ्जरयूथानि मृगयूथानि चाभितः।

विचरन्ति वनान्तेस्मिन् तानि द्रक्ष्यसि राघव।।2.54.41।।


राघव Rama, तत्र there, अस्मिन् वनान्ते in the middle of the forest, अभितः throughout, कुञ्जरयूथानि herds of elephants, मृगयूथानि च and herds of deer, विचरन्ति range about, तानि all that, द्रक्षयसि you will see.

You will see, O Rama, herds of elephants and deer ranging in the forest.
सरित्प्रस्रवणप्रस्थान् दरीकन्दरनिर्झरान्।

चरतः सीतया सार्धं नन्दिष्यति मनस्तव।।2.54.42।।


सीतया सार्धम् along with Sita, सरित्प्रस्रवणप्रस्थान् rivers, waterfalls, plateaus, दरीकन्दरनिर्झरान् caverns and mountaintorrents, चरतः while wandering, तव your, मनः mind, नन्दिष्यति will be joyful.

Your heart will be filled with joy while you wander with Sita beholding rivers,

प्रहृष्टकोयष्टिककोकिलस्वनैर्विनादितं तं वसुधाधरं शिवम्।

मृगैश्च मत्तैर्बहुभिश्च कुञ्जरैः सुरम्यमासाद्य समावसाश्रमम्।।2.54.43।।


प्रहृष्टकोयष्टिककोकिलस्वनैः with the notes of cheerful lapwings and cuckoos, विनादितम् echoed, बहुभिः by many, मृगैश्च deer (animals), मत्तै: intoxicated, कुञ्जरैश्च by elephants, सुरम्यम् exceedingly charming, तं वसुधाधरम् that mount Chitrakuta, आसाद्य having reached, आश्रमम् hermitage, समावस dwell there.

The auspicious mountain (Chaitrakuta) resounds with the note of cheerful lapwings and cuckoos. Intoxicated elephants and deer move about in the enchanting mountain. There you may settle down in a hermitage.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे चतुःपञ्चाश स्सर्गः।।
