[Sumantra conveys the message of Rama to the wailing king and Kausalya.]

pratyāśvastō yadā rājā mōhātpratyāgataṅ punaḥ.

athā.juhāva taṅ sūtaṅ rāmavṛttāntakāraṇāt৷৷2.58.1৷৷


atha thereafter, rājā king, yadā when, pratyāśvastaḥ consoled, mōhāt from loss of
consciousness, punaḥ again, pratyāgatam having regained his senses, rāmavṛttānta kāraṇāt due to the news about Rama, taṅ sūtam that charioteer, ājuhāva called for him.

When the king regained his consciousness and was consoled, he summoned the charioteer to hear news about Rama.
atha sūtō mahārājaṅ kṛtāñjalirupasthitaḥ.

rāmamēvānuśōcantaṅ duḥkhaśōkasamanvitam৷৷2.58.2৷৷

vṛddhaṅ paramasantaptaṅ navagrahamiva dvipam.

viniśvasantaṅ dhyāyantamasvastha miva kuṅañaram৷৷2.58.3৷৷


atha then, sūtaḥ the charioteer, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded palms, rāmamēva Rama alone, anuśōcantam thinking of Rama, duḥkhaśōkasamanvitam by grief and sorrow, vṛddham aged, paramasantaptam deeply afflicted, navagraham newly-captured, dvipamiva like an elephant, viniḥśvasantam heaving deep sighs, asvastham indisposed, kuñjaramiva like an elephant, dhyāyantam brooding, mahārājam king, upasthitaḥ approached.

Then the charioteer with folded palms approached the king who, deeply afflicted with grief and pain, was brooding over Rama alone. Aged Dasaratha was heaving deep sighs like a newly-captured, indisposed elephant.
rājā tu rajasā sūtaṅ dhvastāṅgaṅ samupasthitam.

aśrupūrṇamukhaṅ dīnamuvāca paramārtavat৷৷2.58.4৷৷


rājā king, rajasā with dust, dhvastāṅgam covered all over, aśrupūrṇamukham face bathed in tears, dīnam dejected, samupasthitam standing nearby, sūtam charioteer, paramārtavat filled with extreme grief, uvāca said.

Seeing the dejected charioteer standing before him, the desolate king covered all over with dust and his face bathed in tears, said to him in extreme grief:
kvanu vatsyati dharmātmā vṛkṣamūlamupāśritaḥ.

sō.tyantasukhita ssūta! kimaśiṣyati rāghavaḥ৷৷2.58.5৷৷


sūta the charioteer, dharmātmā righteous (Rama), vṛkṣamūlam foot of the tree, upāśritaḥ having taken refuge, kvanu where, vatsyati will he live?, atyanta sukhitaḥ enjoyed supreme luxury, sa: rāghavaḥ that Rama, kim what?, aśiṣyati will he eat?

O charioteer! Rama is rightous and he is acustoomed to all sorts of comfort. Taking refuge at the foot of a tree how shall he live and what shall he eat?
duḥkhasyānucitō duḥkhaṅ sumantra śayanōcitaḥ.

bhūmipālātmajō bhūmau śētē kathamanāthavat৷৷2.58.6৷৷


sumantra Sumantra, duḥkhasya to sorrow, anucitaḥ not deserving, śayanōcitaḥ accustomed to comfortable couches, bhūmipālātmajaḥ son of the guardian of the earth (prince Rama), anāthavat like an orphan, bhūmau on the ground, duḥkham sadly, katham how?, śētē can lie down?

How can the son of the guardian of the earth who is accustomed to a comfortable bed and not to undeserved suffering lie down on the ground like an orphan, O Sumantra!
yaṅ yāntamanuyānti sma padātirathakuñjarāḥ.

sa vatsyati kathaṅ rāmō vijanaṅ vana māśritaḥ৷৷2.58.7৷৷


yāntam when he went out, yam whom, padātirathakuñjarā: foot-soldiers, chariots and elephants, anuyānti sma followed, saḥ that, rāmaḥ Rama, vijanam desolate, vanam forest, āśritaḥ having taken shelter, katham how, vatsyati can live.

Wherever Rama went, elephants, chariots and foot-soldiers followed him. How can he (now) live in the desolate forest where he has taken refuge?
vyālairmṛgairācaritaṅ kṛṣṇasarpaniṣēvitam.

kathaṅ kumārau vaidēhyā sārdhaṅ vana mupasthitau৷৷2.58.8৷৷


kumārau the two youths (Rama and Lakshmana), vaidēhyā sārdham with Vaidehi also, vyālaiḥ by wicked wild elephants, mṛgaiḥ animals, ācaritam ranging about, kṛṣṇasarpaniṣēvitam abounding in black cobras, vanam forest, katham how, upasthitau exist.

How can the two young men along with Vaidehi live in the forest infested with black cobras and wicked, wild animals?
sukumāryā tapasvinyā sumantra! saha sītayā.

rājaputrau kathaṅ pādairavaruhya rathādgatau৷৷2.58.9৷৷


sumantra Sumantra, rājaputrau king's sons, sukumāryā along with delicate, tapasvinyā by the pitiable, sītayā saha with Sita, rathāt from the chariot, pādaiḥ on foot, avaruhya alighting, katham how, gatau did they go.

O Sumantra! how did those two princes along with pitiable, delicate Sita, alight from the chariot, and enter the forest on foot?
siddhārthaḥ khalu sūta! tvaṅ yēna dṛṣṭau mamā.tmajau.

vanāntaṅ praviśantau tāvaśvināvivamandaram৷৷2.58.10৷৷


sūta O charioteer, yēna by you, aśvinau Aswinis, mandaram iva like Mandara mountain, vanāntam on the outskirts of the forest, praviśantau entering, mama my, ātmajau sons, dṛṣṭau have been seen, tvam you, siddhārthaḥ khalu are blessed indeed.

You are blessed indeed, O charioteer! to have seen my sons entering the outskirts of the forest like Aswinis stepping into the region of the Mandara mountain.
kimuvāca vacō rāmaḥ kimuvāca ca lakṣmaṇaḥ.

sumantra! vanamāsādya kimuvāca ca maithilī৷৷2.58.11৷৷


sumantra! Sumantra, vanam forest, āsādya on reaching, rāmaḥ Rama, kim what?, vacaḥ words, uvāca did speak, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, kim what, uvāca did say, maithilī ca and Sita, kim what, uvāca did say.

Upon reaching the forest, O Sumantra! what did Rama, Lakshmana and Sita say?
āsitaṅ śayitaṅ bhuktaṅ sūta! rāmasya kīrtaya.

jīviṣyāmahamētēna yayātiriva sādhuṣu৷৷2.58.12৷৷


sūta! charioteer, rāmasya Rama's, āsitam seat, śayitam bed, bhuktam food, kīrtaya describe, aham I, yayātiḥ Yayati, sādhuṣu iva as in the company of saints, ētēna with this, jīviṣyāmi shall live.

Tell me, O charioteer! where Rama sat, where he slept, what (food) he ate. Only your words will enable me to live like Yayati among saints.
iti sūtō narēndrēṇa bōdhita ssajjamānayā.

uvāca vācā rājānaṅ sa bāṣpaparibaddhayā৷৷2.58.13৷৷


narēndrēṇa by the king, Dasaratha, iti in this way, bōdhitaḥ questioned, saḥ sūtaḥ that charioteer, bāṣpaparibaddhayā with voice choked with tears, sajjamānayā faltering with grief, vācā with words, rājānam to the king, uvāca said.

Thus questioned by the king the charioteer, his voice choked with tears and words faltering in grief, addressed the king:
abravīnmāṅ mahārāja! dharmamēvānupālayan.

añjaliṅ rāghavaḥ kṛtvā śirasā.bhipraṇamya ca৷৷2.58.14৷৷


mahārāja! O great king, rāghavaḥ the descendant of the Raghu race (Rama), dharmamēva righteousness also, anupālayan guarding, añjalim with folded hands, kṛtvā having set, śirasā bowing his head, abhipraṇamya ca offering salutations, mām to me, abravīt said.

With palms folded and head bowed, O great king! Rama offered his salutations to you in confirmity with righteousness and said to me:
sūta! madvacanāttasya tātasya viditātmanaḥ.

śirasā vandanīyasya vandyau pādau mahātmanaḥ৷৷2.58.15৷৷


sūta! O charioteer, madvacanāt as my words, viditātmanaḥ knower of the self, mahātmanaḥ illustrious, vandanīyasya worthy of salutations, tasya that, tātasya father's, pādau feet, śirasā head, vandyau are worthy of salutations.

'Convey on my behalf, O charioteer! to my illustrious father who is known for his self-knowledge, and is worthy of homage, that I am saluting his feet with my head bowed.
sarvamantaḥpuraṅ vācyaṅ sūta! madvacanāttvayā.

ārōgyamaviśēṣēṇa yathārhaṅ cābhivādanam৷৷2.58.16৷৷


sūta! O charioteer, tvayā by you, madvacanāt at my words, sarvam entire, antaḥpuram inmates of the inner apartment, aviśēṣēṇa without distinction, ārōgyam well-being, yathārham befitting their status, abhivādanaṅ ca salutations, vācyam fit to be conveyed.

'On my behalf convey, O charioteer, without any distinction, my salutations to all the
women befitting their status and tell them I was enquiring about their well-being.
mātā ca mama kausalyā kuśalaṅ cābhivādanam.

apramādaṅ ca vaktavyā brūyāścaināmidaṅ vacaḥ৷৷2.58.17৷৷


mama my, mātā mother, kausalyā Kausalya, kuśalam welfare, abhivādanaṅ ca salutations, apramādaṅ ca alertness, vaktavyā is worthy of conveying, idam this, vacaśca word, brūyāḥ tell.

'Convey my mother carefully my saluations and my well-being and tell her:
dharmanityā yathākālamagnyagāraparā bhava.

dēvi! dēvasya pādau ca dēvavatparipālaya৷৷2.58.18৷৷


dēvi O mother, dharmanityā adhering to the righteous path, yathākālam in time, agnyagāraparā bhava perform the rituals in the chamber of sacrificial fire, dēvasya (your) lord's (king Dasaratha's), pādau ca feet also, dēvavat like a god, paripālaya serve.

'O mother!, adhering to the righteous path and performing in time the rituals in the chamber of sacrificial fire, offer your services at the feet of king Dasaratha as if he were a god.
abhimānaṅ ca mānaṅ ca tyaktvā vartasva mātṛṣu.

anu rājānamāryāṅ ca kaikēyīmamba kāraya৷৷2.58.19৷৷


abhimānaṅ ca egoism, mānaṅ ca pride, mātṛṣu towards mothers, vartasva conduct yourself, amba O mother, āryām venerable, kaikēyīm Kaikeyi, rājānam anu well-disposed towards the king, kāraya mould her.

'O mother, conduct yourself with other mothers without pride and egoism. Ensure that venerable Kaikeyi remains well-disposed towards the king.
kumārē bharatē vṛttirvartitavyā ca rājavat.

arthajyēṣṭhā hi rājānō rājadharmamanusmara৷৷2.58.20৷৷


kumārē young, bharatē towards Bharata, rājavat like a king, vṛtti: conduct, vartitavyā to be followed, rājānaḥ kings, arthajyēṣṭhāḥ hi senior by virtue of their royalty, rājadharmam prerogative of kings, anusmara remember.

'Behave towards young Bharata as to a king. Irrespective of age, a king is a king. (Hence should be honoured). You should keep this rajadharma (royal prerogative) in mind.
bharataḥ kuśalaṅ vācyō vācyō madvacanēna ca.

sarvāsvēva yathānyāyaṅ vṛttiṅ vartasva mātṛṣu৷৷2.58.21৷৷


bharataḥ Bharata, kuśalam welfare, vācyaḥ deserves to be told, madvacanēna by my word, vācyaḥ ca is to be told, sarvāsu among all, mātṛṣu mothers, yathānyāyam rightly, vṛttim behaviour, vartasva follow.

'Tell Bharata of my welfare and tell him on my behalf that he should honour all our mothers equally.
vaktavyaśca mahābāhurikṣvākukulanandanaḥ.

pitaraṅ yauvarājyasthō rājyasthamanupālaya৷৷2.58.22৷৷


ikṣvākukulanandanaḥ delight of the race of Ikshvaku, mahābāhuḥ mighty-armed, vaktavyaśca deserves be told this way, yauvarājyasthaḥ crowned as prince regent, rājyastham being in the kingdom, pitaram father, anupālaya rule the kingdom (by being obedient to him).

atikrāntavayā rājā māsmainaṅ vyavarōrudhaḥ.

kumāra rājyē jīva tvaṅ tasyaivājñāpravartanāt৷৷2.58.23৷৷


rājā king Dasaratha, atikrāntavayāḥ is advanced in age, ēnam him, mā sma vyavarōrudhaḥ do not restrict him, tvam you, tasyaiva that king's, ājñāpravartanāt carrying out the commands, kumārarājyē as prince regent, jīva live.

'The king is advanced in age. Do not restrict him in any manner. Carry out his orders as prince regent, and live happily'.
abravīccāpi māṅ bhūyō bhṛśamaśrūṇi vartayan.

mātēva mama mātā tē draṣṭavyā putragardhinī৷৷2.58.24৷৷


bhṛśam excessively, aśrūṇi tears, vartayan shedding, mām addressing me, bhūyaḥ more, abravīccāpi uttered, putragardhinī covetous of her son, mama mātā my mother, tē by you, mātēva as your mother, draṣṭavyā worthy of being looked after.

Shedding profuse tears, Rama continued, 'Look after my mother who is covetous of her son as your own mother'.
ityēvaṅ māṅ maharāja! bruvannēva mahāyaśāḥ.

rāmō rājīvatāmrākṣō bhṛśamaśrūṇyavartayat৷৷2.58.25৷৷


mahārāja! O king, mahāyaśāḥ renowned, rājīvatāmrākṣaḥ with red lotus-like eyes, rāmaḥ Rama, mām to me, ityēvam thus, bruvannēva while saying, bhṛśam copious, aśrūṇi tears, avartayat shed.

While saying this the red lotus-like eyes of illustrious Rama streamed with tears, O maharaja!
lakṣmaṇastu susaṅkṛddhō niśśvasanvākyamabravīt.

kēnāyamaparādhēna rājaputrō vivāsitaḥ৷৷2.58.26৷৷


lakṣmaṇastu Lakshmana, susaṅkṛddhaḥ mighty angry, niśśvasan sighing, vākyam words, abravīt said, ayam this, rājaputraḥ king's son, kēna by what, aparādhēna offence, vivāsitaḥ has been banished?

But Lakshmana, seething with anger and sighing said, 'For what offence has this king's son been banished'?
rājñā tu khalu kaikēyyā laghutvāśritya śāsanam.

kṛtaṅ kāryamakāryaṅ vā vayaṅ yēnābhipīḍitāḥ৷৷2.58.27৷৷


rājñā tu by the king also, kaikēyyāḥ of Kaikeyi, laghu trash, śāsanam command, āśritya having taken refuge, akāryam a forbidden act, kāryaṅ vā or a worthy act, kṛtam has been done, yēna by which, vayam we, abhipīḍitāḥ have been made to suffer.

'The king, too, submitting to the trash command of Kaikeyi has perpetrated an act, just or unjust (he knows better), for which we are made to suffer so much.
yadi pravrājitō rāmō lōbhakāraṇakāritam.

varadānanimittaṅ vā sarvathā duṣkṛtaṅ kṛtam৷৷2.58.28৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, lōbhakāraṇakāritam out of greed (for the kingdom), varadānanimittaṅ vā or on account of the boons bestowed, pravrājitaḥ yadi if banished, sarvathā by all means, duṣkṛtam wicked act, kṛtam has been done.

'Whether it was out of greed (for the kingdom) or for (the execution of) the boon bestowed, this act of banishment is by all means wicked'.
idaṅ tāvadyathākāmamīśvarasya kṛtē kṛtam.

rāmasya tu parityāgē na hētu mupalakṣayē৷৷2.58.29৷৷


idaṅ tāvat this one, īśvarasya kṛtē for (fear of) God, yathākāmam this act, kṛtam done, rāmasya Rama's, parityāgē in abandonment, hētum reason, na upalakṣayē I do not see.

'Or he might have thought he is the overlord and can do as he likes. (Or, he might have done this for fear of God) Otherwise, I do not see any reason for the abandonment of Rama'.
asamīkṣaya samārabdhaṅ viruddhaṅ budhdilāghavāt.

janayiṣyati saṅkrōśaṅ rāghavasya vivāsanam৷৷2.58.30৷৷


buddhilāghavāt out of lack of intelligence, asamīkṣya without (proper) consideration, samārabdham commenced, viruddham contrary (to justice), rāghavasya Rama's, vivāsanam banishment,
saṅkrōśam bewailment, janayiṣyati will produce.

'Unjustly, foolishly and without (proper) consideration Rama has been banished. This will (definitely) cause sorrow'.
ahaṅ tāvanmahārājē pitṛtvaṅ nōpalakṣyē.

bhrātā bhartā ca bandhuśca pitā ca mama rāghavaḥ৷৷2.58.31৷৷


aham I, mahārājē in that great king, pitṛtvam fatherhood, nōpalakṣyē I do not see, mama to me, rāghavaḥ Rama alone, bhrātā ca brother, bhartāca also protector, bandhuśca friend, pitā father.

'I do not regard the great king as my father. Rama alone is my brother, protector, friend and father.
sarvarlōkapriyaṅ tyaktvā sarvalōkahitē ratam.

sarvalōkō.nurajyēta kathaṅ tvā.nēnakarmaṇā৷৷2.58.32৷৷


sarvalōkapriyam beloved to all, sarvalōkahitē in the welfare of all, ratam devoted, tyaktvā after deserting, anēna karmaṇā with this act, tvā towards you, sarvalōkaḥ entire world, katham how, anurajyēta will be pleased?

'How can anyone in this world be pleased with you for deserting Rama, the beloved of all, and ever devoted to their welfare?
sarvaprajābhirāmaṅ hi rāmaṅ pravrājya dhārmikam.

sarvalōkaṅ virudhyēmaṅ kathaṅ rājā bhaviṣyasi৷৷2.58.33৷৷


sarvaprajābhirāmam Delight of all subjects, dhārmikam righteous, rāmam to Rama, pravrājya having used banishment, imam this, sarvalōkam entire world, virudhya antagonizing, rājā king, katham how, bhaviṣyasi will continue to rule?

'Having banished the righteous Rama, the delight of all subjects and, thereby,
antagonizing the entire world, how can you claim to be their king?'
jānakī tu mahārāja! niśśvasantī manasvinī.

bhūtōpahatacittēva viṣṭhitā vismṛtā smitā৷৷2.58.34৷৷


mahārāja! O great king, manasvinī sensitive lady, jānakī tu Janaki, niśśvasantī heaving sighs, bhūtōpahatacittēva like one possessed, vismṛtā smitā like one unconcerned with the surroundings and yet smiling, viṣṭhitā stood stupefied.

O great king! as for that sensitive Janaki, she stood sighing, stupefied and oblivious (of the past), yet smiling as though her mind was possessed by an evil spirit.
adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā rājyaputrī yaśasvinī.

tēna duḥkhēna rudatī naiva māṅ kiñcidabravīt৷৷2.58.35৷৷


adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā who had never experienced adversity, yaśasvinī celebrated, rājaputrī that princess, tēna that, duḥkhēna with sorrow, rudatī weeping, mām to me, kiñcit even a little, naiva abravīt did not at all say.

That glorious princess Sita who had never experienced any adversity earlier, weeping with sorrow, could not even speak to me anything.
udvīkṣamāṇā bhartāraṅ mukhēna pariśuṣyatā.

mumōca sahasā bāṣpaṅ māṅ prayāntamudīkṣya sā৷৷2.58.36৷৷


sā she, prayāntam moving, mām me, udīkṣya having seen, pariśuṣyatā with dried-up, mukhēna face, bhartāram husband, udvīkṣamāṇā beholding, sahasā suddenly, bāṣpam tears, mumōca shed.

When she saw me leaving, she looked at her husband with a dry (pale) face and suddenly burst into tears.
tathaiva rāmō.śrumukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ sthitō.bhavallakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ.

tathaiva sītā rudatī tapasvinī nirīkṣatē rājarathaṅ tathaiva mām৷৷2.58.37৷৷


tathaiva thus, rāmaḥ Rama, aśrumukhaḥ with his face filled with tears, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded hands, lakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ supported by the arms of Lakshmana, sthitaḥ abhavat stood, tapasvinī pitiable, sītā Sita, rudatī weeping, rājaratham king's chariot, mām me, nirīkṣatē kept gazing.

Supported by Lakshmana's arms, Rama stood, his face streaming with tears and palms folded, while the wretched Sita, glaring at me and the royal chariot, weeping.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭapañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyeighth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
