[Dasaratha relates to Kausalya the event of the noble ascetic's curse on him --- death of Dasaratha]

vadhamapratirūpaṅ tu maharṣēstasya rāghavaḥ.

vilapannēva dharmātmā kausalyāṅ punarabravīt৷৷2.64.1৷৷


dharmātmā the righteous one, rāghavaḥ descendant of the Raghu's (Dasaratha), tasya maharṣēḥ that maharsi's, apratirūpam unique, vadham killing, vilapannēva while lamenting, punaḥ again, kauśalyām to Kausalya, abravīt said.

Grieving for having unfairly killed the great sage the rightenous descendant of the Raghus (Dasaratha) coutinued to tell Kausalya about it:
tadajñānānmahatpāpaṅ kṛtvāhaṅ saṅkulēndriyaḥ.

ēkastvacintayaṅ budhyā kathaṅ nu sukṛtaṅ bhavēt৷৷2.64.2৷৷


aham I, ajñānāt in ignorance, tat that, mahat great, pāpam sin, kṛtvā having done, saṅkulēndriyaḥ with agitated senses, ēkastu myself alone, kathaṅ nu how, sukṛtam well done, bhavēt shall be, budhyā in my mind, acintayam reflected.

Having committed the sin unwittingly, I was greatly agitated. I reflected in my mind as
to how to atone for this great sin.
tatastaṅ ghaṭamādāya pūrṇaṅ paramavāriṇā.

āśramaṅ tamahaṅ prāpya yathā.khyātapathaṅ gataḥ৷৷2.64.3৷৷


tataḥ then, paramavāriṇā with clean water, pūrṇam filled, tam that, ghaṭam pot ādāya taking hold of, yathā.khyātapatham the path as directed, prāpya having reached, aham I, aśramam hermitage, gataḥ entered.

Holding the pot filled with clean water I reached the hermitage following the path as directed.
tatrāhaṅ durbalāvandhau vṛddhāvapariṇāyakau.

apaśyaṅ tasya pitarau lūnapakṣāviva dvijau৷৷2.64.4৷৷

tannimittābhirāsīnau kathābhirapariśramau.

tāmāśāṅ matkṛtē hīnāvudāsīnāvanāthavat৷৷2.64.5৷৷


tatra there, aham I, durbalau frail, andhau blind, vṛddhau old, apariṇāyakau without any supporter, lūnapakṣau with wings severed, dvijau iva like birds, tannimittābhiḥ on account of their son, kathābhiḥ with stories, āsīnau seated, apariśramau without any work, matkṛtē done by me, tām āśām their hope, hīnau deprived of, anāthavat like orphans, udāsīnau passive, tasya his, pitarau parents, apaśyam I saw.

There I found his weak, blind, old parents. With no supporter, they looked like birds with clipped wings. They sat there helplessly like orphans and passively talking about their son, their only hope that I have deprived them of.
śōkōpahatacittaśca bhayasantrastacētanaḥ.

taccā.śramapadaṅ gatvā bhūyaśśōkamahaṅ gataḥ৷৷2.64.6৷৷


śōkōpahata cittaḥ ca with mind smitten with grief, bhayasantrastacētanaḥ mind charged with apprehension, aham I, tat that, āśramapadam hermitage, gatvā having reached, bhūyaḥ once again, śōkam sorrow, gataḥ obtained.

Smitten with grief and my heart throbbing with fear I reached the hermitage and my sorrow became manifold.
padaśabdaṅ tu mē śrutvā munirvākyamabhāṣata.

kiṅ cirāyasi mē putra! pānīyaṅ kṣipramānaya৷৷2.64.7৷৷


mē my, padaśabdam sound of footsteps, śrutvā having heard, muniḥ sage, vākyam words, abhāṣata spoke this, putra! son, kim why, cirāyasi are you delaying, kṣipram quickly, mē to me, pānīyam water, ānaya bring.

Hearing the sound of my footsteps, the sage said 'O son! why have you delayed? Bring me some water quickly'.
yannimittamidaṅ tāta! salilē krīḍitaṅ tvayā.

utkaṇṭhitā tē mātēyaṅ praviśa kṣipramāśramam৷৷2.64.8৷৷


tāta! O Dear child, tvayā by you, yannimittam for whatever reason, salilē in the water, idam this, krīḍitam sported, iyam this, tē mātā your mother, utkaṇṭhitā with anxicty, kṣipram quickly, āśramam hermitage, praviśa enter.

'O Dear child, whatever be the reason, you have been sporting in the water so long, come at once to the hermitage. Your mother is anxious.
yadvyalīkaṅ kṛtaṅ putra! mātrā tē yadi vā mayā.

na tanmanasi kartavyaṅ tvayā tāta! tapasvinā৷৷2.64.9৷৷


putra! son, tē your, mātrā mother, yadivā or, mayā by myself, yat any, vyalīkam displeasing act, kṛtam has been done, tāta! O Child, tapasvinā by being ascetic, tvayā by you, tat that one,
manasi in the mind, na kartavyam should not be taken seriously.

'O Child, O Son! if your mother or I have done anything disagreeable, do not take it to heart, for you are an ascetic.
tvaṅ gatistvagatīnāṅ cakṣustvaṅ hīnacakṣuṣām.

samāsaktāstvayi prāṇāḥ kiṅ tvaṅ nō nābhibhāṣasē৷৷2.64.10৷৷


agatīnām for us with no support, tvam you, gatiḥ are support, acakṣuṣām for us who have no eyes, tvam you, cakṣuḥ hi are our eyes, prāṇāḥ our vital life, tvayi in you, samāsaktāḥ are attached, tvam you, naḥ to us, kim why, nābhibhāṣasē are not talking?

'You are a support to the supportless, eyes to the blind, you are our very vital life. Why don't you speak to us'?
munimavyaktayā vācā tamahaṅ sajjamānayā.

hīnavyañjanayā prēkṣya bhītacitta ivābruvam৷৷2.64.11৷৷


aham I, taṅ munim that sage, prēkṣya having seen, bhītacitta iva with a frightened mind, avyaktayā indistinctly, sajjamānayā stammering, hīnavyañjanayā with slurring syllables, vācā with words, abruvam I uttered.

As I saw him, my heart was filled with terror and I stammered as I spoke in garbled sentences.
manasaḥ karma cēṣṭābhirabhisaṅstabhya vāgbalam.

ācacakṣē tvahaṅ tasmai putravyasanajaṅ bhayam৷৷2.64.12৷৷


aham I, cēṣṭābhiḥ with efforts, manasaḥ mind's, karma thoughts, vāgbalam power of speech, abhisaṅstabhya holding up firmly, tasmai him, putravyasanajam the calamity arising due to the death of his son, bhayam fear, ācacakṣē related to him.

After a lot of effort, with great fear controlling my thoughts and the power of speech, I related to him the calamity that had befallen his son.
kṣatriyō.haṅ daśarathō nāhaṅ putrō mahātmanaḥ.

sajjanāvamataṅ duḥkhamidaṅ prāptaṅ svakarmajam৷৷2.64.13৷৷


aham I, daśarathaḥ Dasaratha, kṣatriyaḥ kshatriya, aham I, mahātmanaḥ of the great, putraḥ son, na not, sajjanāvamatam condemnable by the virtuous, idam this, svakarmajam caused out of my own
action, duḥkham sorrowful, prāptam has befallen.

O magnanimous sage! I am a kshatriya known as Dasaratha. I am not your son. A pathetic incident has been caused by my own action, condemnable by the virtuous.
bhagavaṅścāpahastō.haṅ sarayūtīramāgataḥ.

jighāṅsuśśvāpadaṅ kañcinnipānē cā.gataṅ gajam৷৷2.64.14৷৷


bhagavan O revered one, aham I, cāpahastaḥ bow in hand, kañcit a certain, śvāpadam wild animal, nipānē drinking at the water hole, āgatam which has come, gajaṅ ca an elephant, jighāṅsuḥ wishing to kill, sarayūtīram to the bank of river Sarayu, āgataḥ arrived.

Wishing to hunt a wild elephant coming down to the water hole for drinking, I went to the bank of Sarayu, bow in hand, O revered sage!
tataśśrutō mayā śabdō jalē kumbhasya pūryataḥ.

dvipō.yamiti matvā.yaṅ bāṇēnābhihatō mayā৷৷2.64.15৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, mayā by me, jalē in the water, pūryataḥ being filled, kumbhasya pot's, śabdaḥ sound, śrutaḥ was heard, ayam this one, dvipaḥ iti taking for an elephant, matvā having thought, ayam he, mayā by me, bāṇēna with arrow, abhihataḥ was killed.

There I heard the sound of a pot being filled with water and mistaking it to be an elephant's, shot an arrow.
gatvā nadyāstata stīramapaśyamiṣuṇā hṛdi.

vinirbhinnaṅ gataprāṇaṅ śayānaṅ bhuvi tāpasam৷৷2.64.16৷৷


tataḥ then, nadyāḥ river's, tīram bank, gatvā having gone, iṣuṇā with an arrow, hṛdi in the chest, vinirbhinnam pierced it, gataprāṇam with ebbing life, bhuvi on the ground, śayānam lying, tāpasam an ascetic, apaśyam I beheld.

Thereafter I reached the river bank and beheld an ascetic with an arrow pierced in his chest. He was lying on the ground, his life ebbing away.
bhagavacchaśabdamālakṣya mayā gajajighāṅsunā.

visṛpṭō.mbhasi nārācastēna tē nihatassutaḥ৷৷2.64.17৷৷


bhagavan O venerable one, śabdam sound, ālakṣya aiming at, gajajighāṅsunā intending to kill an elephant, mayā by me, ambhasi in the water, nārācaḥ with an arrow, visṛṣṭaḥ has been released, tēna by that, tē your, sutaḥ son, nihataḥ was struck.

O venerable one! I released an arrow towards the water aiming at the sound intending to kill an elephant but it hit your son.
tatastasyaiva vacanādupētya paritapyataḥ.

sa mayā sahasā bāṇa udhṛtō marmatastadā৷৷2.64.18৷৷


tataḥ then, paritapyataḥ tormented, tasyaiva by his own, vacanāt words, mayā by me, tadā then, upētya reaching him, sahasā at once, saḥ bāṇaḥ that arrow, marmataḥ from his vital part, udhṛtaḥ removed.

Then I approached him. He was suffering from excruciating pain. I pulled out at his word the arrow from his chest.
sa cōdhṛtēna bāṇēna tatraiva svargamāsthitaḥ.

bhavantau pitarau śōcannandhāviti vilapya ca৷৷2.64.19৷৷


saḥ ca he also, pitarau parents, bhavantau about both of you, śōcan while grieving, andhau iti saying you are blind, vilapya ca wailing, udhṛtēna extracted, tēna bāṇēna by that arrow, tatraiva there itself, svargam heaven, āsthitaḥ attained.

Grieving for both of you and crying you are blind he died as soon as the arrow was pulled out.
ajñānādbhavataḥ putra ssahasā.bhihatō mayā.

śēṣamēvaṅ gatē yatsyāttatprasīdatu mē muniḥ৷৷2.64.20৷৷


ajñānāt by my ignorance, sahasā suddenly, bhavataḥ putraḥ your son, mayā by me, nihataḥ was slain, ēvaṅ gatē when this has happened, yat whatever, śēṣaṅ syāt remains to be done, tat that, muniḥ ascetic, prasīdatu be pleased.

Your son has been killed by me due to my ignorance. Since this has happened, may the ascetic be pleased to command me on the next course of action.
sa taccrutvā vacaḥ krūraṅ mayōktamaghaśaṅsinā.

nāśakattīvramāyāsamakartuṅ bhagavānṛṣiḥ৷৷2.64.21৷৷


bhagavān venerable, saḥ ṛṣiḥ that sage, aghaśaṅsinā conveying my sinful act, mayā by me, uktam uttered, krūram cruel, tat those, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, tīvram intense, āyāsam anguish, akartum not to do, nāśakat was not able.

The venerable sage heard my cruel words about the sinful act and was not able to seriously react. (He was stunned).
sa bāṣpapūrṇavadanō niśśvasanśōkakarśitaḥ.

māmuvāca mahātējāḥ kṛtāñjalimupasthitam৷৷2.64.22৷৷


mahātējāḥ brilliant, saḥ that ascetic, bāṣpapūrṇavadanaḥ face filled with tears, niśśvasan heaving sighs, śōkakarśitaḥ broken with grief, kṛtāñjalim with folded palms, upasthitam standing nearby, mām me, uvāca said.

The grief-stricken, glorious ascetic with his face filled with tears, heaving deep sighs broke down with grief and spoke to me as I was standing with folded palms.
yadyētadaśubhaṅ karma na tvaṅ mē kathayēssvayam.

phalēnmūrdhā sma tē rājan sadya śśatasahasradhā৷৷2.64.23৷৷


rājan O king, aśubham inauspicious, ētat this, karma act, tvam you, mē to me, svayam yourself, na kathayēḥ yadi not spoke, sadya: right now, tē your, mūrdhā your head, śatasahasradhā a hundred thousand pieces, phalēt sma would have been split.

'O king!, hadn't you yourself broken this inauspicious news, your head would have split into a hundred thousand pieces right now.
kṣatriyēṇa vadhō rājan! vānaprasthē viśēṣataḥ.

jñānapūrvaṅ kṛta ssthānāccyāvayēdapi vajriṇam৷৷2.64.24৷৷


rājan king, kṣatriyēṇa by a kshatriya, jñānapūrvam with prior knowledge, kṛtaḥ done, vadhaḥ the act of killing, viśēṣataḥ especially, vānaprasthē of a forest-dweller, vajriṇam api even if he is wielder of thunderbolt (Indra), sthānāt from his position, cvāvayēt would overthrow.

'If a kshatriya kills any one knowingly, particularly when in vanaprastha (third stage) this sin can displace even Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt from his position, O king.
saptadhā tu phalēnmūrdhā munau tapasi tiṣṭhati.

jñānādvisṛjataśśastraṅ tādṛśē brahmāvādini৷৷2.64.25৷৷


tapasi observing austerities, tiṣṭhati staying, munau at the ascetic, tādṛśē similar, brahmavādini at one who propagates self-knowledge, jñānāt knowingly, śastram weapon, visṛjataḥ discharges, mūrdhā head, saptadhā into seven pieces, phalēt will break.

'If any one deliberately discharges a weapon upon an ascetic observing austerities or on him who expounds the Vedas, his head will split into seven pieces.
ajñānāddhikṛtaṅ yasmādidaṅ tēnaiva javasi.

api hyadya kulaṅ na syādikṣvākūṇāṅ kutō bhavān৷৷2.64.26৷৷


idam this, yasmāt for which reason, ājñānāt out of ignorance, kṛtaṅ hi has been done, tēnaiva that is why, jīvasi you will live, ikṣvākūṇām Ikshvakus', kulamapi race itself, adya now, na syāt hi would not have been there, bhavān you also, kutaḥ where are you

'Since you have done this unwittingly you are still alive. If it had been otherwise, your Ikshvaku race itself would have been exterminated, what to speak of you!
naya nau nṛpa! taṅ dēśamiti māṅ cābhyabhāṣata.

adya taṅ draṣṭumicchāvaḥ putraṅ paścimadarśanam৷৷2.64.27৷৷

rudhirēṇāvasiktāṅgaṅ prakīrṇājinavāsasam.

śayānaṅ bhuvi nissaṅjñaṅ dharma rājavaśaṅ gatam৷৷2.64.28৷৷


nṛpa! king, adya now, paścimadarśanam for the last time to see, rudhirēṇa in blood, avasiktāṅgam his body spattered, prakīrṇājinavāsasam with antelope skin in disarray, bhuvi on the ground, śayānam lying, nissaṅjñam without senses, dharmarājavaśam under the sway of the Lord of death, gatam gone, putram son, draṣṭum to see, icchāvaḥ intend, taṅ dēśam to that place, nau us, naya take us, iti thus, mām me, abhyabhāṣata ca spoke.

'O king! take us to that place. We wish to have the last look at him, at his garment of antelope skin in disarray, his body spattered with blood, lying on the ground unconscious under the sway of the lord of death'. Thus the sage said to me.
athāhamēkastaṅ dēśaṅ nītvā tau bhṛśaduḥkhitau.

asparśayamahaṅ putraṅ taṅ muniṅ saha bhāryayā৷৷2.64.29৷৷


atha thereupon, ēkaḥ alone, aham I, bhṛśaduḥkhitau deeply grieved, tau both of them, taṅ dēśam to that place, nītvā having taken, bhāryayā saha along with his wife, taṅ munim to that asetic, taṅ putram their son, asparśayam made them touch.

Thereupon, I took both of them all by myself to that spot and made the grieving
ascetics touch the body of their son.
tau putramātmana sspṛṣṭvā tamāsādya tapasvinau.

nipētatuśśarīrē.sya pitā cāsyēdamabravīt৷৷62.64.30৷৷


tapasvinau both the ascetics, tau both, tam their, ātmanaḥ own, putram son, āsādya having approached, spṛṣṭavā having touched, asya his, śarīrē on body, nipētatuḥ fell, asya his, pitā ca father, idam this way, abravīt spoke.

Both the ascetics stroking their son's body and collapsed upon it. And the father said:
nābhivādayasē mādya na ca mā.mabhibhāṣasē.

kiṅ nu śēṣē tu bhūmau tvaṅ vatsa! kiṅ kupitō hyasi৷৷2.64.31৷৷


vatsa! child, adya today, mā me, nābhivādayasē you are not greeting us, mām me, na ca abhibhāṣasē not also speaking to us, tvam you, bhūmau on this ground, kiṅ nu śēṣē why are you lying, kupitaḥ angry, kim asi why have you become?.

'O child! why are you not greeting us today nor speaking? Why are you lying on the ground? Are you angry with us?
na tvahaṅ tē priyaṅ putra! mātaraṅ paśya dhārmika.

kiṅ nu nāliṅgasē putra! sukumāra! vacō vada৷৷2.64.32৷৷


dhārmika O righteous, putra! son, aham I, tē to you, priyam dear, na tu if not so, mātaram mother, paśya look at, putra! O son, kiṅ nu why, nāliṅgasē are not embracing, sukumāra! O tender child, vacaḥ words, vada tell.

'O righteous son! if I am no longer dear to you, (at least) look at your mother. O tender child, why are you not embracing me? Speak.
kasya vā.pararātrē.haṅ śrōṣyāmi hṛdayaṅgamam.

adhīyānasya madhuraṅ śāstraṅ vānyadviśēṣataḥ৷৷2.64.33৷৷


apararātrē in the last watch of the night, śāstram scriptures, viśēṣata: especially, anvadvā any other, adhīyānasya while reciting, kasya vā or whose, hṛdayaṅgamam delightful to the heart, madhuram sweet sound, aham I, śrōṣyāmi shall listen?

'From whom shall I hear the sweet recitation of scriptures or other texts, delightful to my heart in the last watch of the night?
kō māṅ sandyāmupāsyaiva snātvā hutahutāśanaḥ.

ślāghayiṣyatyupāsīnaḥ putra śōkabhayārditam৷৷2.64.34৷৷


putra O son, kaḥ who, snātvā after the ablution, sandyām morning Sandhya, upāsyaiva having worshipped, hutahutāśanaḥ having offered oblations to the sacrificial fire, upāsīnaḥ seated near, śōkabhayārditam tormented with sorrow and fear, mām to me, ślāghayiṣyati serve?

'O son! I am tortured with sorrow and fear. Who will serve me from now on after the ablution and the morning worship of Sandhya, followed by oblations to the sacrificial fire?
kandamūlaphalaṅ hṛtvā kō māṅ priyamivātithim.

bhōjayiṣyatyakarmaṇyamapragrahamanāyakam৷৷2.64.35৷৷


kandamūlaphalam tubers and fruits, hṛtvā having brought, kaḥ who, akarmaṇyam incapable of doing any work, apragraham incapable of procuring anything, anāyakam one who has no guide, mām me, priyam dear, atithimiva like a guest, bhōjayiṣyati will feed?

'I am incapable of doing any work, I am unable to procure anything (to meet my needs. now). I have no guide (to help me walk my way). Who will feed me like a welcome guest with tubers and fruits?
imāmandhāṅ ca vṛddhāṅ ca mātaraṅ tē tapasvinīm.

kathaṅ vatsa! bhariṣyāmi kṛpaṇāṅ putragardhinīm৷৷2.64.36৷৷


vatsa! O son, andhām blind, vṛddhām old, tapasvinīm miserable, kṛpaṇām wretched, putragardhinīm yearning for her son, imām this, tē your, mātaram mother, katham how, bhariṣyāmi support her?

'O son! how can I support your wretched and pitiable mother, who is blind, old and yearning for her son?
tiṣṭha māṅ māgamaḥ putra! yamasya sadanaṅ prati.

śvō mayā saha gantāsi jananyā ca samēdhitaḥ৷৷2.64.37৷৷


putra! son, māṅ tiṣṭha stay with me, yamasya of the lord of death, sadanaṅ prati to the abode, māgamaḥ do not go, mayā with me, jananyā saha ca along with your mother also, samēdhitaḥ accompanied by, śvaḥ tomorrow, gantāsi may go.

'My dear son, stay with me, do not go (now) to the abode of Yama, (lord of death). Tomorrow accompanied by me and your mother you may!
ubhāvapi ca śōkārtāvanāthau kṛpaṇau vanē.

kṣipramēva gamiṣyāvastvayā hīnau yamakṣayam৷৷2.4.38৷৷


tvayā by you, hīnau having been deserted, śōkārtau afflicted with grief, vanē in the forest, anāthau without support, kṛpaṇau wretched ones, ubhāvapi ca both of us also, kṣipramēva quickly, yamakṣayam to the abode of Yama, gamiṣyāvaḥ will go.

'Deserted by you and without any support in the forest, afflicted with grief and feeling miserable, both of us also will assuredly go to Yama's abode, quickly.
tatō vaivasvataṅ dṛṣṭvā taṅ pravakṣyāmi bhāratīm.

kṣamatāṅ dharmarājō mē bibhṛyātpitarāvayam৷৷2.64.39৷৷


tataḥ then, vaivasvatam lord of death, Yama, dṛṣṭvā having seen, tam him, bhāratīm in speech, pravakṣyāmi I shall say, dharmarājaḥ the lord of justice, mē me, kṣamatām forgive, ayam this man, pitarau parents, bibhṛyāt continue to maintain.

'There seeing Yama, (lord of death), I shall say O Lord of Justice! forgive me. Let this boy continue to maintain his parents.
dātumarhati dharmātmā lōkapālō mahāyaśāḥ.

īdṛśasya mamākṣayyā mēkāmabhayadakṣiṇām৷৷2.64.40৷৷


mahāyaśāḥ of high renown, dharmātmā righteous, lōkapālaḥ guardian of the worlds, īdṛśasya of such, mama to me, akṣayyām unfailing, ēkām one, abhaya dakṣiṇām protection from fear, dātum to give, arhati behoves him.

'That lord of justice, who is highly renowned, righteous and the guardian of the worlds will grant me one unfailing boon of protection from fear.
apāpō.si yadā putra! nihataḥ pāpakarmaṇā.

tēna satyēna gacchā৷৷śu yē lōkāśśastrayōdhinām৷৷2.64.41৷৷


putra! O son, pāpakarmaṇā by a person of sinful deeds, nihataḥ killed, yathā just as, apāpaḥ asi you are sinless, tēna that, satyēna with truth, śastrayōdhinām those who fight with weapons, yē
whichever, lōkā: worlds, āśu quickly, gaccha go.

'O sinless son, you are killed by a person of sinful deeds. On this truth, quickly go to those worlds which are attained by those valiant heroes.
yānti śūrā gatiṅ yāṅ ca saṅgrāmēṣvanivartinaḥ.

hatāstvabhimukhāḥ putra! gatiṅ tāṅ paramāṅ vraja৷৷2.64.42৷৷


putra! son, saṅgrāmēṣu in wars, anivartinaḥ the men who do not retreat, śūrāḥ warriors, abhimukhāḥ yām facing the enemy, gatim ultimate state, yānti will attain, tām that one, paramām supreme, gatim state, vraja attain.

yāṅ gatiṅ sagaraśśaibyō dilīpō janamējayaḥ.

nahuṣō dundumāraśca prāptāstāṅ gaccha putraka!৷৷2.64.43৷৷


putraka! O son, sagaraḥ Sagara, śaibyaḥ Saibya, dilīpaḥ Dilipa, janamējayaḥ Janamejaya, nahuṣaḥ Nahusha, dundumāraśca Dundumara also, yām which, gatim state, prāptāḥ have attained, tām the same, gaccha attain.

'You will attain, my son, the same supreme state achieved by Sagara, Saibya, Dilipa, Janamejaya, Nahusha and Dundumara.
yā gati ssarvasādhūnāṅ svādhyāyāttapasāca yā.

yā bhūmidasyāhi.tāgnērēkapatnī vratasya ca৷৷2.64.44৷৷

gōsahasrapradātṛṇāṅ yā yā gurubhṛtāmapi.

dēhanyāsakṛtāṅ yā ca tāṅ gatiṅ gaccha putraka!৷৷2.64.45৷৷


putraka! O son, sarvasādhūnām of all virtuous people, yā which, gatiḥ state, svādhyāyāt with the study of Vedas, tapasā ca by asceticism, bhūmidasya bestowers of land as charity, āhitāgnēḥ who kindle the sacred fires, ēkapatnīvratasya ca of the monogamist too, gōsahasrapradātṛṇām who offer a thousand cows in charity, yā which, gurubhṛtāmapi who nurture the venerable ones, dēhanyāsakatām for those who lay down their bodies voluntarily, yā ca and those, tāṅ gatim the same state, gaccha you will attain.

'You, my son, shall attain that supreme state obtained by those who are virtuous, who study the Vedas and practise asceticism.You shall attain the state merited by those bestowers of land as charity, who kindle the sacred fires, who are monoganists, who offer a thousand cows in charity, who nurture the venerable and who willingly lay down their bodies.
na hi tvasminkulē jātō gacchatyakuśalāṅ gatim.

sa tu yāsyati yēna tvaṅ nihatō mama bāndhavaḥ৷৷2.64.46৷৷


asmin in this, kulē family, jātaḥ born, akuśalām undesirable, gatim state, na gacchati hi will never go, tu but, mama my, bāndhavaḥ relation, tvam you, yēna by whom, nihataḥ killed, saḥ he, yāsyati will attain.

'He who has killed you will alone attain that undesirable state, a member of our family will not.'
ēvaṅ sa kṛpaṇaṅ tatra paryadēvayatāsakṛt.

tatō.smai kartumudakaṅ pravṛttassahabhāryayā৷৷2.64.47৷৷


saḥ he, ēvam in this way, tatra there, asakṛt again and again, kṛpaṇam piteously, paryadēvayata bewailed, tataḥ then, asmai to him, bhāryayā saha along with his wife, udakaṅ kartum to perform funeral obsequies, pravṛttaḥ commenced.

In this way the ascetic piteously wailed again and again. Thereafter, he with his wife set about to perform the funeral obsequies of their son.
sa tu divyēna rūpēṇa muniputrassvakarmabhiḥ.

svargamadhyāruhatkṣipraṅ śakrēṇa saha dharmavit৷৷2.64.48৷৷


dharmavit one conversant with righteousness, saḥ that, muniputraḥ son of the sage, svakarmabhiḥ by the merit of his own deeds, śakrēṇa saha with Indra, divyēna in a celestial, rūpēṇa form, kṣipram quickly, svargam heaven, adhyāruhat ascended.

The virtuous son of that ascetic assumed a celestial form through the merit of his good deeds and ascended heaven at once with Indra.
ābabhāṣē ca vṛddhau tau saha śakrēṇa tāpasaḥ.

āśvāsyaca muhūrtaṅ tu pitarau vākyamabravīt৷৷2.64.49৷৷


saha śakrēṇa with Indra, (saḥ) tāpasaḥ that ascetic, tau both, vṛddhau to the aged ones, abābhāṣē ca spoke, pitarau parents, muhūrtam for a brief moment, āśvāsya consoling, vākyam words, abravīt said.

The ascetic in the company of Indra consoling the aged couple for a brief moment said:
sthānamasmi mahatprāptō bhavatōḥ paricāraṇāt.

bhavantāvapi ca kṣipraṅ mama mūlamupaiṣyataḥ৷৷2.64.50৷৷


bhavatōḥ your, paricāraṇāt by (your) service, mahat supreme, sthānam state, prāptaḥ asmi I have attained, bhavantau api ca you also, kṣipram quickly, mama my, mūlam presence, upaiṣyataḥ will obtain.

'I have attained this supreme state by virtue of the service rendered to you. You will also attain my state soon.'
ēvamuktvā tu divyēna vimānēna vapuṣmatā.

ārurōha divaṅ kṣipraṅ muniputrō jitēndriyaḥ৷৷2.64.51৷৷


jitēndriyaḥ one with his senses conquered, muniputraḥ sage's son, ēvam in this way, uktvā having said, vapuṣmatā beautiful, divyēna celestial, vimānēna aerial chariot, kṣipram quickly, divam heaven, ārurōha ascended.

The sage's son with his senses under control said this while ascending heaven on a beautiful, celestial, aerial chariot.
sa kṛtvā tūdakaṅ tūrṇaṅ tāpasa ssaha bhāryayā.

māmuvāca mahātējāḥ kṛtāñjalimupasthitam৷৷2.64.52৷৷


mahātējāḥ brilliant, saḥ tāpasaḥ that ascetic, bhāryayā saha with his wife, tūrṇam immediately, udakaṅ kṛtvā offering funeral libations, kṛtāñjalim with folded palms, upasthitam standing nearby, mām me, uvāca addressed.

The radiant ascetic along with his wife hurriedly completed the funeral libations and said to me standing with folded palms:
adyaiva jahiṅ māṅ rājanmaraṇē nāsti mē vyathā.

yaccharēṇaikaputraṅ māṅ tvamakarṣīraputrakam৷৷2.64.53৷৷


rājan king, tvam you, yat since, aika putram having only one son, mām me, śarēṇa with the arrow, aputrakam childless, akārṣīḥ rendered, adyaiva right now, mām me, jahi slay, mē to me, maraṇē in death, vyathā pain, nāsti not.

'Kill me, O king! with the same arrow by which you rendered me childless. Death holds no pain for me.
tvayā tu yadavijñānānnihatō mē sutaśśuciḥ.

tēna tvāmabhiśapsyāmi suduḥkhamatidāruṇam৷৷2.64.54৷৷


tvayā by you, avijñānāt in ignorance, mē my, śuciḥ pure-hearted, sutaḥ son, yat since, nihataḥ was killed, tēna therefore, tvām you, suduḥkham deeply sorrowful, atidāruṇam extremely dreadful, abhiśapsyāmi I will curse.

'Though you have killed my pure-hearted son unintentionally, I will pronounce a disastrous and dreadful curse on you.
putravyasanajaṅ duḥkhaṅ yadētanmama sāmpratam.

ēvaṅ tvaṅ putraśōkēna rājankālaṅ kariṣyasi৷৷2.64.55৷৷


sāmpratam now, yat ētat just as this, putravyasanajam caused by my son's death, duḥkham grief, ēvam the same way, rājan O king!, tvam you, putraśōkēna by the sorrow over your son, kālaṅ kariṣyasi will die.

'Just as I am now suffering from grief caused by my son's death, you, O king, shall die from the sorrow on account of (separation from) your son.
ajñānāttu hatō yasmātkṣatriyēṇa tvayā muniḥ.

tasmāttvāṅ nāviśatyāśu brahmahatyā narādhipa!৷৷2.64.56৷৷


narādhipa O lord of men, kṣatriyēṇa by being a kshatriya, tvayā by you, yasmāt since, muniḥ sage, ajñānāt ignorantly, hataḥ killed, tasmāt for that reason, āśu immediately, brahmahatyā sin of slaying a brahmana, tvām you, na āviśati will not apply.

'Since you, O lord of men, you have killed an ascetic unaware, as kshatriya the sin of slaying a brahmin will not accrue to you immediately.
tvāmapyētādṛśō bhāvaḥ kṣipramēva gamiṣyati.

jīvitāntakarō ghōrō dātāramiva dakṣiṇā৷৷2.64.57৷৷


jīvitāntakaraḥ causing the end of your life, ghōraḥ dreadful, ētādṛśaḥ such, bhāvaḥ mortal condition, dakṣiṇā alms, dātāram iva like a giver, kṣipramēva soon, tvāmapi you also, gamiṣyati will reach.

'Just like the merits of alms come to the giver, you are going to face very soon a dreadful situation causing the end of your life.'
ēvaṅ śāpaṅ mayi nyasya vilapya karuṇaṅ bahu.

citāmārōpya dēhaṅ tanmithunaṅ svargamabhyayāt৷৷2.64.58৷৷


tat that, mithunam couple, ēvam in this way, mayi in me, śāpam curse, nyasya giving, karuṇam
piteously, bahuvilapya lamenting long, dēham body, citām funeral pyre, ārōpya ascending, svargam to heaven, abhyayāt went.

Having thus cursed me, the couple piteously lamenting for a long time, laid themselves down on the funeral pyre and went to heaven.
tadētacchintayānēna smṛtaṅ pāpaṅ mayā svayam.

tadā bālyātkṛtaṅ dēvi! śabdavēdhyanuśikṣiṇā৷৷2.64.59৷৷


dēvi! O Devi (Kausalya)!, tadā then, śabdavēdhyanuśikṣiṇā trained in discharging the arrow in the direction of sound, mayā by me, bālyāt out of ignorance, svayam myself, kṛtam committed, tat such, ētat this, pāpam sin, cintayānēna reflecting, smṛtam recollected.

While reflecting about it now, O Devi (Kausalya)! I recollect this sin committed by me unintentionally, with childish pranks while practising the art of hitting a target by its sound.
tasyāyaṅ karmaṇō dēvi! vipākassamupasthitaḥ.

apathyaissahambhuktē vyādhirannarasē yathā৷৷2.64.60৷৷


dēvi! O Devi!, tasya karmaṇaḥ that act's, ayaṅ vipākaḥ this consequence, annarasē food and drink, apathyaiḥ saha with unhealthy food, sambhuktē sati when partaking, vyādhiḥ yathā causing illness, samupasthitaḥ has befallen.

Just as a man eating forbidden food and drink falls sick, so have I fallen prey to grief,
because of my sin, O Devi!
tasmānmāmāgataṅ bhadrē! tasyōdārasya tadvacaḥ.

yadahaṅ putraśōkēna santyakṣyāmyadya jīvitam৷৷2.64.61৷৷


bhadrē! O gentle lady, tasmāt hence, aham I, putraśōkēna due to sorrow over my son, jīvitam life, yat santyakṣyāmi since I am giving up, udārasya of the noble, tasya that ascetic's, tat vacaḥ
those words, mama for me, adya today, āgatam have come true.

O gentle lady, the words of that noble ascetic have come true today. Hence I am now going to give up my life.
cakṣubhyāṅ tvāṅ na paśyāmi kausalyē! sādhu māṅ sphṛśa.

ityuktvā sa rudaṅstrastō bhāryāmāha ca bhūmipaḥ৷৷2.64.62৷৷


kauśalyē! O Kausalya, cakṣurbhyām with eyes, tvām you, na paśyāmi I am unable to see, māṅ me, sādhu properly, sphṛśa touch, bhūmipaḥ lord of the earth, iti uktvā having said so, trastō frightened, rudan weeping, bhāryām to his wife, āha ca said also.

O Kausalya, I cannot see you with my eyes. Touch me gently, said the frightened Dasaratha, Lord of the earth, to his wife weeping.
ētanmē sadṛśaṅ dēvi! yanmayā rāghavē kṛtam.

sadṛśaṅ tattu tasyaiva yadanēna kṛtaṅ mayi৷৷2.64.63৷৷


dēvi! O Devi, mayā by me, yat whatever, rāghavē to Rama, kṛtam done, ētat all that, mē to me, sadṛśam befitting, anēna by him (this Rama), mayi relating to me, yat whatever, kṛtam done, tattu that one, tasyaiva his, sadṛśam is worthy of.

Whatever I have done to the scion of the Raghu family (Rama) is befitting me, O Devi. And whatever he has done in respect of me is also worthy of him.
durvṛttamapi kaḥ putraṅ tyajēdbhuvi vicakṣaṇaḥ.

kaśca pravrājyamānō vā nāsūyētpitaraṅ sutaḥ৷৷2.64.64৷৷


bhuvi in this world, vicakṣaṇaḥ clear-righted, kaḥ who, durvṛttamapi even if ill-behaved, putram son, tyajēt will he abandon?, pravrājyamānō api even while he is being banished, kaḥ who, sutaḥ son, pitaram at his father, nā sūyēt will not become angry?

Which clear-sighted man in this world, will abandon his son even if he is of evil conduct? Which son will not get angry with his father when he is banished?
yadi māṅ saṅspṛśēdrāmassakṛdadya labhēta vā.

yamakṣayamanuprāptā drakṣyanti na hi mānavāḥ৷৷2.64.65৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, adya now, sakṛt once, mām me, samspṛśēt will touch?, labhēta vā will he come to my side, yamakṣayam world of Yama, anuprāptāḥ attained, mānavāḥ men, na drakṣyanti hi cannot see any more indeed

Before I die, will Rama touch me once or will he come to me? After reaching the abode of Yama men cannot see their relations.
cakṣuṣā tvāṅ na paśyāmi smṛtirmama vilupyatē.

dūtā vaivasvatasyaitē kausalyē! tvarayanti mām৷৷2.64.66৷৷


kausalyē O Kausalya, cakṣuṣā with my eyes, tvām you, na paśyāmi cannot see, mama my, smṛtiḥ memory, vilupyatē is failing, vaivasvatasya Yama's, ētē dūtāḥ these messengers, mām me, tvarayanti are hastening up.

O Kausalya!, I am unable to see you. My memory is failing and the messengers of Yama are hastening me.
atastu kiṅ duḥkhataraṅ yadahaṅ jīvitakṣayē.

na hi paśyāmi dharmajñaṅ rāmaṅ satyaparākramam৷৷2.64.67৷৷


aham I, jīvitakṣayē at the last moment of my life, dharmajñam to the knower of righteousness, satyaparākramam to one possessing the strength of truth, rāmam Rama, na paśyāmi hi iti yat the fact that I am unable to see, ataḥ more than this, duḥkhataram more sorrowful, kiṅ nu what is there?

Can there be a greater sorrow than that at the last moment of my life I am unable to
see my righteous and truthful son, Rama?
tasyādarśanajaśśōkassutasyāpratikarmaṇaḥ.

ucchōṣayati mē prāṇānvāristōkamivātapaḥ৷৷2.64.68৷৷


apratikarmaṇaḥ of unparalleled deeds, tasya sutasya that son's, adarśanajaḥ born out of non-appearance, śōkaḥ grief, stōkam small quantity, vāri water, ātapaḥ iva like heat, mē my, prāṇān life, ucchōṣayati is drying up.

My grief in the absence of Rama of peerless deeds is drying up my life as heat dries up small pools of water.
na tē manuṣyā dēvāstē yē cāruśubhakuṇḍalam.

mukhaṅ drakṣyanti rāmasya varṣē pañcadaśē punaḥ৷৷2.64.69৷৷


pañcadaśē varṣē in the fifteenth year, yē whoever, cāru elegant, śubhakuṇḍalam with auspicious ear- rings, rāmasya Rama's, mukham countenance, punaḥ again, drakṣyanti will behold, tē those, dēvāḥ gods, manuṣyāḥ men, na not.

Those who will behold Rama's countenance adorned with auspicious ear-rings on his return in the fifteenth year are gods not men.
padmapatrēkṣaṇaṅ subhru! sudaṅṣṭraṅ cārunāsikam.

dhanyā drakṣyanti rāmasya tārādhipanibhaṅ mukham৷৷2.64.70৷৷


padmapatrēkṣaṇam eyes like lotus petals, subhru graceful eyebrows, sudaṅṣṭram even teeth, cārunāsikam of shapely nose, tārādhipanibham resembling the lord of the stars (the Moon), rāmasya Rama's, mukham countenance, dhanyāḥ blessed, drakṣyanti will behold.

Blessed are they who will behold Rama's countenance resembling the Moon, lord of the stars with eyes like lotus petals graceful eyebrows, even teeth and a nose.
sadṛśaṅ śāradasyēndōḥ pullasya kamalasya ca.

sugandhi mama nāthasya dhanyā drakṣyanti tanmukham৷৷2.64.71৷৷


śāradasya autumnal, indōḥ Moon, sadṛśam similar, pullasya full-blown, kamalasya ca similar to lotus, sugandhi fragrant, mama nāthasya my son's, tat that, mukham countenance, dhanyāḥ blessed, drakṣyanti will behold.

Fortunate indeed are the men who will behold my son's fragrant countenance camparable to the autmnal Moon and the full-blown lotus.
nivṛttavanavāsaṅ tamayōdhyāṅ punarāgatam.

drakṣyanti sukhinō rāmaṅ śukraṅ mārgagataṅ yathā৷৷2.64.72৷৷


nivṛttavanavāsam after completing the period of exile, ayōdhyām to Ayodhya, punaḥ again, āgatam returning, rāmam Rama, mārgagatam moving on the highway, śukraṅ yathā like the planet Venus, sukhinaḥ happy persons, drakṣyanti will behold.

Lucky men will behold Rama return to Ayodhya after the completion of his exile, like the planet Venus moving forward on its orbit.
kausalyē! cittamōhēna hṛdayaṅ sīdatīva mē.

vēdayē na ca saṅyuktān śabdasparśarasānaham৷৷2.64.73৷৷


kausalyē! O Kausalya, cittamōhēna on account of delusion, mē hṛdayam my heart, sīdatīva as if sinking, aham I, saṅyuktān united, śabdasparśarasān the sense of sound, touch and taste, na ca vēdayē I am not able to know.

O Kausalya!, my heart, it appears is sinking and on account of delusion I am not able to feel the sense objects like sound touch and taste together.
cittanāśādvipadyantē sarvāṇyēndriyāṇi mē.

kṣīṇasnēhasya dīpasya saṅsaktā raśmayō yathā৷৷2.64.74৷৷


cittanāśāt on account of the loss of the mental faculty, mē my, sarvāṇyēva all, indriyāṇi sense organs, kṣīṇasnēhasya with oil exhausted, dīpasya like the lamp, saṅsaktāḥ together, raśmayaḥ yathā like rays, vipadyantē are giving way.

With the loss of my mental faculty, all the sense organs are giving way, like the rays of the lamp giving way together when the oil is exhausted.
ayamātmabhavaśśōkō māmanāthamacētanam.

saṅsādayati vēgēna yathā kūlaṅ nadīrayaḥ৷৷2.64.75৷৷


ātmabhavaḥ self-created on account of my son, ayam this, śōkaḥ sorrow, anātham helpless, acētanam insensible, mām me, nadīrayaḥ current of the river, kūlaṅ yathā like the bank, vēgēna rapidly, saṅsādayati eroding.

This self-created grief is rapidly destroying me like the bank of a river eroded by its swift current, leaving me helpless and insensible.
hā rāghava! mahābāhō! hā mamā.yāsanāśana.

hā pitṛpriya! mē nātha! hā.dya kvāsi gatassuta৷৷2.64.76৷৷


mahābāhō! O mighty-armed one, hā rāghava! Ah Rama, mama my, āyāsanāśana destroyer of my agony, hā Ah , hā pitṛpriya Ah delight of your father, mē nātha my protector, hā Ah suta son, kva
where, gataḥ asi have you gone?.

Ah, mighty-armed Rama, destroyer of my agonies, Ah, the delight of your father, Ah, my protector, Ah, my son, where have you gone?.
hā kausalyē! naśiṣyāmi hā sumitrē! tapasvini!.

hā nṛśaṅsē! mamāmitrē! kaikēyi! kulapāṅsani!৷৷2.64.77৷৷


hā kauśalyē! Ah Kausalya, tapasvini! pitiable one, hā sumitrē Ah Sumitra, hā Ah, nṛśaṅsē cruel one, mama amitrē my enemy, kulapāṅsani! defiler of my race, kaikēyi Kaikeyi, naśiṣyāmi am destroyed.

Ah, Kausalya, Ah, pitiable Sumitra, Ah, cruel Kaikeyi, my enemy and defiler of my race, I am going to die.
iti rāmasya mātuśca sumitrāyāśca sannidhau.

rājā daśaratha śśōcañjīvitāntamupāgamat৷৷2.64.78৷৷


rājā king, daśaradhaḥ Dasaratha, iti thus, rāmasya mātuśca Rama's mother, sumitrāyāśca Sumitra's, sannidhau in the presence, iti thus, śōcan crying in distress, jīvitāntaṅ end of his life, upāgamat reached.

King Dasaratha, thus crying in distress in the presence of Rama's mother and Sumitra reached the end of his life.
yadā tu dīnaṅ kathayannarādhipaḥ priyasya puttrasya vivāsanāturaḥ.

gatē.rdharātrē bhṛśaduḥkhapīḍitastadā jahau prāṇamudāradarśanaḥ৷৷2.64.79৷৷


udāradarśanaḥ a man of noble vision, narādhipaḥ king, dīnam pitiably, kathayan while speaking, putrasya son's, vivāsanāturaḥ distraught on account of his exile, ardharātrē at midnight, gatē having passed away, yadā when, bhṛśaduḥkhapīḍitaḥ tormented with intense sorrow, tadā then, prāṇam life, jahau gave up.

King Dasaratha, a man of noble vision and lord of men, anguished by the exile of his son, kept pitiably muttering till past midnight until tormented by an intense agony he breathed his last.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē catuṣṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
