[Bharata and Satrughna meet griefstricken Kausalya -- Kausalya reproaches Bharata harshly -- Bharata appeases Kausalya and curses himself -- Kausalya gets convinced of Bharata's conviction.]

दीर्घकालात्समुत्थाय संज्ञां लब्ध्वा च वीर्यवान्।

नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां दीनामुद्वीक्ष्य मातरम्।।2.75.1।।

सोऽमात्यमध्ये भरतो जननीमभ्यकुत्सयत्।


वीर्यवान् valiant, सः भरतः that Bharata, दीर्घकालात् after a long time, समुत्थाय risen up, संज्ञाम् senses, लब्ध्वा च having regained, अश्रुपूर्णाभ्याम् filled with tears, नेत्राभ्याम् with eyes, दीनाम् unfortunate, मातरम् mother, उद्वीक्ष्य having looked up, अमात्यमध्ये in the midst of counsellors, जननीम् mother, अभ्यकुत्सयत् condemned.

On regaining his senses after a long time, the valiant Bharata looked at his unfortunate mother whose eyes were filled with tears, and condemned her amidst the counsellors.
राज्यं न कामये जातु मन्त्रये नापि मातरम्।।2.75.2।।

अभिषेकं न जानामि योऽभूद्राज्ञा समीक्षितः।

विप्रकृष्टेह्यहं देशे शत्रुघ्नसहितोऽवसम्।।2.75.3।।


जातु at any time, राज्यम् kingdom, न कामये I do not wish, मातरम् अपि even (with) mother, न मन्त्रये consulted, यः the consecration, राज्ञा by king, समीक्षितः अभूत् has been supervised, अभिषेकम् consecration, न जानामि am not aware, अहम् I, शत्रुघ्नसहितः with Satrughna, विप्रकृष्टे in a distant, देशे country, अवसम् हि stayed.

Neither did I ever desire the kingdom nor did I ever consult my mother in this regard and I am not even aware of the consecration that was planned by the king for I was away in a distant country with Satrughna.
वनवासं न जानामि रामस्याहं महात्मनः।

विवासनं वा सौमित्रे स्सीतायाश्च यथाऽभवत्।।2.75.4।।


अहम् I, महात्मनः of great, रामस्य Rama's, वनवासम् banishment, न जानामि do not know, सौमित्रेः Lakshmana's, सीतायाश्च Sita's, विवासनम् exile, यथा अभवत् how it happened.

I knew nothing of the banishment of great Rama nor did I know how Lakshmana or Sita had gone on exile.
तथैव क्रोशतस्तस्य भरतस्य महात्मनः।

कौसल्या शब्दमाज्ञाय सुमित्रामिदमब्रवीत्।।2.75.5।।


तथैव in that way, क्रोशतः wailing, महात्मनः of the magnanimous, भरतस्य Bharata's, शब्दम् sound, आज्ञाय having recognised, कौशल्या Kausalya, सुमित्राम् addressing Sumitra, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

As magnanimous Bharata was wailing, Kausalya recognised his voice and said to Sumitra:
आगतः क्रूरकार्यायाः कैकेय्या भरतस्सुतः।

तमहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भरतं दीर्घदर्शिनम्।।2.75.6।।


क्रूरकार्यायाः of a woman of cruel deeds, कैकेय्याः Kaikeyi's, सुतः son, भरतः Bharata, आगतः has come, दीर्घदर्शिनम् farsighted, तं भरतम् that Bharata, अहम् I, द्रष्टुम् to see, इच्छामि I am wishing

Bharata, the farsighted son of Kaikeyi of cruel deeds has come and I wish to see him.
एवमुक्त्वा सुमित्रां सा विवर्णा मलिना कृशा।

प्रतस्थे भरतो यत्र वेपमाना विचेतना।।2.75.7।।


विवर्णा turned pallid, मलिना sullied, कृशा emaciated, सा that Kausalya, सुमित्राम् to Sumitra,
एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having uttered, वेपमाना trembling, विचेतना almost lifeless, भरतः Bharata, यत्र wherever, प्रतस्थे set out.

Having said so to Sumitra, Kausalya trembling and almost lifeless, emaciated, sullied and turned pallid set out for the place where Bharat was.
स तु रामानुजश्चापि शत्रुघ्नसहितस्तदा।

प्रतस्थे भरतो यत्र कौसल्याया निवेशनम्।।2.75.8।।


तदा then, रामानुजः younger brother of Rama, सः भरतः तु Bharata on his part, शत्रुघ्नसहितः accompanied by Satrughna, कौशल्यायाः to Kausalya's, निवेशनम् residence, यत्र wherever, प्रतस्थे proceeded.

But at the same time Bharata, the younger brother of Rama accompanied by Satrughna proceeded to the place where Kausalya resided.
तत श्शत्रुघ्नभरतौ कौसल्यां प्रेक्ष्य दुःखितौ।

पर्यष्वजेतां दुःखार्तां पतितां नष्टचेतसाम्।।2.75.9।।

रुदन्तौ रुदतीं दुःखात्समेत्यार्यां मनस्स्विनीम्।


ततः then, शत्रुघ्नभरतौ Satrughna and Bharata, दुःखार्ताम् griefstricken, नष्टचेतसाम् semi conscious, रुदतीम् weeping, आर्याम् venerable, मनस्स्विनीम् noblehearted, कौशल्याम् Kausalya, प्रेक्ष्य having seen, दुःखितौ overcome with sorrow, रुदन्तौ agonised, दुःखात् with great sorrow, समेत्य having approached, पर्यष्वजेताम् hugged.

Then agonised Bharata and Satrughna, beholding that venerable, noblehearted, griefstricken, weeping Kausalya who was almost semiconscious overcome with grief, approached her with great sorrow and hugged her.
भरतं प्रत्युवाचेदं कौसल्या भृशदुःखिता।।2.75.10।।

इदं ते राज्यकामस्य राज्यं प्राप्तमकण्टकम्।

संप्राप्तं बत कैकेय्या शशीघ्रं क्रूरेण कर्मणा।।2.75.11।।


भृशदुःखिता deeply afflicted, कौशल्या Kausalya, भरतं प्रति looking at Bharata, इदम् these words, उवाच said, राज्यकामस्य of one desirous of the kingdom, ते to you, इदम् this, अकण्टकम् without obstacles, राज्यम् kingdom, प्राप्तम् has been acquired, कैकेय्याः Kaikeyi's, क्रूरेण by crooked, कर्मणा with act, शीघ्रम् quickly, सम्प्राप्तम् secured, बत alas.

Looking at Bharata, the deeply afflicted Kausalya said, The kingdom which you had desired has been acquired without any obstacle. Alas Kaikeyi had quickly secured it for you through her crooked act.
प्रस्थाप्य चीरवसनं पुत्रं मे वनवासिनम्।

कैकेयी कं गुणं तत्र पश्यति क्रूरदर्शिनी।।2.75.12।।


क्रूरदर्शिनी one of cruel thoughts, कैकेयी Kaikeyi, मे my, पुत्रम् son, चीरवसनम् clad in bark robes, वनवासिनम् a forestdweller, प्रस्थाप्य having sent, तत्र there, कम् what, गुणम् advantage, पश्यति sees?

What advantage did cruel Kaikeyi visualize in sending away my son to dwell in the forest wearing robes of bark?
क्षिप्रं मामपि कैकेयी प्रस्थापयितुमर्हति।

हिरण्यनाभो यत्रास्ते सुतो मे सुमहायशाः।।2.75.13।।


सुमहायशाः illustrious, हिरण्यनाभः goldennavalled one, मे सुतः my son, यत्र whereever, आस्ते stays, मामपि me also, कैकेयी Kaikeyi, क्षिप्रम् without delay, प्रस्थापयितुम् to send me, अर्हति behoves her.

Kaikeyi should send me also without any delay to that place where my illustrious
Rama with golden navel dwells.
अथवा स्वयमेवाहं सुमित्रानुचरा सुखम्।

अग्निहोत्रं पुरस्कृत्य प्रस्थास्ये यत्र राघवः।।2.75.14।।


अथवा or else, अहम् I, स्वयमेव on my own, सुमित्रानुचरा with Sumitra as companion, अग्निहोत्रम् with sacred fire, पुरस्कृत्य holding in front of me, राघवः Rama, यत्र where, सुखम् happily, प्रस्थास्ये shall set out.

Or else I, accompanied by Sumitra, shall go happily on my own holding the sacred fire in front to that place where Rama dwells.
कामं वा स्वयमेवाद्य तत्र मां नेतुमर्हसि।

यत्रासौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः पुत्रो मे तप्यते तपः।।2.75.15।।


वा or, पुरुषव्याघ्रः tiger among men, मे पुत्रो my son, असौ this Rama, यत्र where, तपः the austerities, तप्यते performing, तत्र there, स्वयमेव yourself, अद्य now, माम् me, कामम् certainly indeed, नेतुम् to take, अर्हसि behoves you.

Or, you should now take me personally to that place where, my son Rama, the best among men, is performing austerities.
इदं हि तव विस्तीर्णं धनधान्यसमाचितम्।

हस्त्वश्वरथसम्पूर्णं राज्यं निर्यातितं तया।।2.75.16।।


हस्त्यश्वरथसम्पूर्णम् abounding in elephants, horses and chariots, धनधान्यसमाचितम् with abundace of wealth and grain, विस्तीर्णम् vast, इदं राज्यम् this kingdom, तया by her, तव to you, निर्यातितं हि has been delivered.

This vast kingdom, with all its abundance of wealth and grain, elephants, horses and chariots has been delivered to you by her.
इत्यादिबहुभिर्वाक्यैः क्रूरैः सम्भर्त्सितोऽनघः।

विव्यथे भरतस्तीव्रं व्रणे तुद्येव सूचिना।।2.75.17।।


इत्यादि like this, बहुभिः by many, क्रूरैः harsh, वाक्यैः with words, सूचिना with needle, व्रणे in the wound, तुद्येव as if by piercing, सम्भर्त्सितः reproached, अनघः sinless, भरतः Bharata, तीव्रम् intensely, विव्यथे was afflicted.

Thus reproached by many a harsh word, like needle pricking a wound, the sinless Bharata was intensely pained.
पपात चरणौ तस्यास्तदा सम्भ्रान्तचेतनः।

विलप्य बहुधाऽसंज्ञो लब्धसंज्ञस्ततः स्थितः।।2.75.18।।


तदा then, सम्भ्रान्तचेतनः with senses reeling, तस्याः her, चरणौ feet, पपात fell, बहुधा repeatedly, विलप्य lamenting, असंज्ञः unconscious, ततः then, लब्धसंज्ञः on regaining the senses, स्थितः stood.

(Having heard these words), his senses reeling, he became unconscious, lamented profusaly and fell at her feet. And on regaining his senses, he stood motionless.
एवं विलपमानां तां भरतः प्राञ्जलिस्तदा।

कौसल्यां प्रत्युवाचेदं शोकैर्बहुभिरावृताम्।।2.75.19।।


तदा then, भरतः Bharata, प्राञ्जलिः his palms joined in reverence, एवम् in that manner, विलपमानाम् lamenting, बहुभिः intense, शोकैः with sorrow, आवृताम् overwhelmed with, तां कौशल्याम् that Kausalya, इदम् these words, प्रत्युवाच replied.

As Kausalya was lamenting in this manner, overwhelmed with deep grief, Bharata, his palms joined in reverence, replied her in these words:
आर्ये कस्मादजानन्तं गर्हसे मामकिल्बिषम्।

विपुलां च मम प्रीतिं स्थिरां जानासि राघवे।।2.75.20।।


आर्ये O noble lady, आजानन्तम् unaware, अकिल्बिषम् guiltless, माम् me, कस्मात् for what
reason, गर्हसे upbraiding, राघवे in Rama, मम my, विपुलाम् profound, स्थिराम् steadfast, प्रीतिम् affection, जानासि you know.

O noble lady unaware (of what had happened), I am guiltless. Why do you upbraid me? You know well my profound, steadfast affection for Raghava (Rama).
कृता शास्त्रानुगा बुद्धिर्माभूत्तस्य कदाचन।

सत्यसन्ध स्सतां श्रेष्ठो यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.21।।


सत्यसन्धः bound to truth, सताम् श्रेष्ठः best among virtuous men, आर्यः noble (Rama), यस्य whose अनुमते with sanction, गतः banished, तस्य his, बुद्धिः thought, कदाचन at any time, शास्त्रानुगा adhered to the scriptures, कृता steadfast, मा भूत् let it not happen.

Did not the one who counselled the banishment of my noble brother who is steadfast and bound by truth and virtue, ever adhered to scriptures?
(or)
My noble brother (Rama), the best among the virtuous, bound to truth, is banished. Let not such thought occur at any time to one who steadfastly adheres to scriptures
प्रेष्यं पापीयसां यातु सूर्यञ्च प्रतिमेहतु।

हन्तु पादेन गां सुप्तां यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.22।।


आर्यः noble one (Rama), यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, पापीयसाम् the most sinful of men, प्रेष्यम् servitude, यातु shall obtain, सूर्यं च प्रति facing the Sun, मेहतु pass urine, सुप्ताम् sleeping, गाम् cow, पादेन by foot, हन्तु kick.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, Rama be cursed with the sin of undergoing servitude in the hands of most sinful of men, the sin of passing urine facing the Sun and of kicking a sleeping cow.
कारयित्वा महत्कर्म भर्ता भृत्यमनर्थकम्।

अधर्मो योऽस्य सोऽस्यास्तु यस्याऽर्योऽनुमतेगतः।।2.75.23।।


आर्यः noble one, यस्य whose, अनुमते counsel, गतः was exiled, अस्य that man, यः भर्ता the master, भृत्यम् his servant, अनर्थकम् without remuneration, महत् difficult, कर्म work, कारयित्वा having got done, अस्य to that man, यः अधर्मः acquire the unrighteousness, सः that must, अस्तु be it in that way.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the demerit of unrighteousness in the same way as a master who gets a difficult work done by a servant without remuneration.
परिपालयमानस्य राज्ञो भूतानि पुयत्रवत्।

ततस्नु दुह्यतां पापं यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.24।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः was exiled, for him राज्ञः by the king, भूतानि his subjects, पुत्रवत् like his own children, परिपालयमानस्य is ruling, ततः father indeed, द्रुह्यताम् who are treacherously acting, पापम् sin, तत् shall happen.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a man acting treacherously against a king who rules like a father and protects his subjects like his own children, acquires.
बलिषड्भागमुद्धृत्य नृपस्यारक्षतः प्रजाः।

अधर्मो योऽस्य सोऽस्यास्तु यस्यार्थोऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.25।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, अस्य for him, बलिषड्भागम् sixth portion of their revenue as tax, उद्धृत्य having received, नृपस्य of the king, प्रजाः the people, अरक्षतः while not protecting, अस्य for him, अधर्मः that unrighteousness, स: that one, अस्तु so be it.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire
unrighteousness in the same way as a king who, having received one sixth of the income as tax from people does not protect them
संश्रुत्य च तपस्विभ्यस्सत्रे वै यज्ञदक्षिणाम्।

तां विप्रलपतां पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.26।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, तपस्विभ्यः for ascetics, सत्रे at sacrifice, यज्ञदक्षिणाम् the offerings at a sacrifice, संश्रुत्य having promised, ताम् that one, विप्रलवताम् those who deny them later, पापम् acquire sin.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a person acquires for having promised the ascetics the required offering at a sacrifice and later denies them
हस्त्यश्वरथसम्बाधे युद्धे शस्त्रसमाकुले।

मा स्म कार्षीत्सतां धर्मं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.27।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, हस्त्यश्वरथसम्बाधे abundantly provided with elephants, horses and chariots, शस्त्रसमाकुले filled with weapons, युद्धे in a battle, सताम् virtuous men's, धर्मम् righteous, मा स्म कार्षीत्
shall not do.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the demerit in the same way as a person, who having gone to the battleground abundantly provided with elephants, horses, chariots and weapons fails to discharge the duty (of a fighter)
उपदिष्टं सुसूक्ष्मार्थं शास्त्रं यत्नेन धीमता।

स नाशयतु दुष्टात्मा यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.28।।


आर्यः esteemed one (Rama), यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that man, दुष्टात्मा evilhearted one, धीमता by a sagacious preceptor, यत्नेन carefully, उपदिष्टम् imparted, सुसूक्ष्मार्थम् having subtle meaning, शास्त्रम् scriptures, नाशयत may destroy.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire demerit in the same way as an evilhearted person who forever destroys the subtle meaning of the scriptures imparted carefully by a sagacious preceptor
मा च तं व्यूढबाह्वंसं चन्द्रार्कसमतेजसम्।

द्राक्षीद्राज्यस्थमासीनं यस्यार्योऽनुमतेगतः।।2.75.29।।


आर्यः esteemed one (Rama), यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, व्यूढबाह्वंसम् longarmed and broadshoulderd one, चन्द्रार्कसमतेजसम् resembling Sun and Moon in radiance, राज्यस्थम् on the throne, आसीनम् seated, तम् that Rama, मा च द्राक्षीत् never behold him.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be highly unfortunate like me in not being able to behold that longarmed and broadshoulderd one seated on the throne and resembling both the Sun and the Moon in radiance
पायसं कृसरं छागं वृथा सोऽश्नातु निर्घृणः।

गुरूंश्चाप्यवजानातु यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.30।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः was exiled, निर्घृणः pitiless, सः that person, पायसम् sweet milkrice, कृसरम् sesamerice, छागम् goat's flesh, वृथा without purpose (without offering to the gods), अश्नातु may partake, गुरून् preceptors, अवजानातु च may be disrespected.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the demerit in the same way as a person, who partakes the sweet milkrice, sesamerice and goat's flesh without purpose (without invoking and offering it to the gods) and disrespects the teachers
गाश्च स्पृशतु पादेन गुरून्परिवदेत्स्वयम्।

मित्रे द्रुह्येत सोऽत्यन्तं यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.31।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः was exiled, सः that person, पादेन with foot, गाः cows, स्पृशतु may touch (kick), स्वयम् himself, गुरून् elders, परिवदेत् may be abused, मित्रे friend, अत्यन्तम् greately, द्रुह्येत causes offence.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person who kicks the cows abuses elders and causes great offence to his friends
विश्वासात्कथितं किञ्चित्परिवादं मिथः क्वचित्।

विवृणोतु स दुष्टात्मा यस्याऽर्योऽमते गतः।।2.75.32।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः दुष्टात्मा that wickedminded man, क्वचित् at some place, मिथः secretly, विश्वासात् in confidence, कथितम् told, किञ्चित् little, परिवादम् words of abuse, विवृणोतु may divulge.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, acquire the sin in the same way as a wickedminded person, who divulges the words of abuse secretly confided in him by his friends.
अकर्ता ह्यकृतज्ञश्च त्यक्ताचाऽत्मा निरपत्रपः।

लोके भवतु विद्विष्टो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.33।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः was exiled, अकर्ता one who never helps, अकृतज्ञः च an ungrateful one, त्यक्तात्मा one who deserted his life, निरपत्रप: shameless one, लोके in this world, विद्विष्टो भवतु worthy to be hated.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be hated universally as one who never helps any one, who is ungrateful, shameless and as one who has committed the sin of suicide
पुत्रैर्दारैश्च भृत्यैश्च स्वगृहे परिवारितः।

स एको मृष्टमश्नातु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.34।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that man, स्वगृहे in his own house, पुत्रैर्दारैश्च by wife and children, भृत्यैश्च by servants, परिवारितः surrounded, एकः alone, मृष्टम् delicacies, अश्नातु will partake.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as one who, although surrounded by wife, children and servants, eats the delicacies all alone without sharing acquires.
अप्राप्य सदृशान् दाराननपत्यः प्रमीयताम्।

अनवाप्य क्रियां धर्म्यां यस्याऽर्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.35।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that man, सदृशान् worthy, दारान् wife, अप्राप्य without getting, अनपत्यः without begetting offspring, धर्म्याम् religious, क्रियाम् deeds, अनवाप्य without performing, प्रमीयताम् let him die.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother die without winning a worthy wife and without begetting offspring and without performing religious deeds
माऽत्मनस्सन्ततिं द्राक्षीत्स्वेषु दारेषु दुःखितः।

आयुस्समग्रमप्राप्य यऽस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.36।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that man, समग्रम् entire, आयुः life, अप्राप्य begetting, दुःखितः anguished, स्वेषु relating to him, दारेषु in wife, आत्मनः his own, सन्ततिम् children, मा द्राक्षीत् will not see.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother live an entire life of anguish without begetting children through his wife or without seeing his own children
राजस्त्रीबालवृद्धानां वधे यत्पापमुच्यते।

भृत्यत्यागे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम्।।2.75.37।।


राजस्त्रीबालवृद्धानाम् of the king, woman, children and the aged, वधे kills, यत् पापम् whatever sin, उच्यते is mentioned in scriptures, भृत्यत्यागे च desertion of the dependents as well, यत् पापम् whatever sin, तत् (पापं) such (sin), प्रतिपद्यताम् be obtained.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin as one acquires for murdering a king, a woman, children and the aged and deserting dependents
लाक्षया मधुमांसेन लोहेन च विषेण च।

सदैव बिभृयाद्भृत्यान्यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.38।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that man, सदैव always, भृत्यान् dependant wife and children, लाक्षया in lac, मधु मांसेन in wine and meat, लोहेन in metal, विषेण च and in poison, बिभृयात् supports.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin as one who supports his wife and children by trafficking in lac, wine, meat and metal and poison acquires
सङ्ग्रमे समुपोढे स्म शत्रुपक्षभयङ्करे।

पलायामानो वध्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.39।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that man, शत्रुपक्षभयङ्करे सङ्ग्रमे in war, समुपोढे when at its peak, पलायमानः feeling, वध्येत be slain.

कपालपाणिः पृथिवीमटतां चीरसंवृतः।

भिक्षमाणो यथोन्मत्तो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.40।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that man, कपालपाणिः with a human skull in hand, चीरसंवृतः covered by rags, भिक्षमाणः begging for alms, उन्मत्तो यथा like a insane man, पृथिवीम् on this earth, अटताम् may wander.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, wander this earth, begging alms, holding a human skull like an insane man dressed in rags
मद्ये प्रसक्तो भवतु स्त्रीष्वक्षेषु च नित्यशः।

कामक्रोधाभिभूतस्तु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.41।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that man, नित्यशः always, मद्ये in wine, स्त्रीषु in women, अक्षेषु च in dice for gambling, प्रसक्तः addicted, कामक्रोधाभिभूतः भवतु shall be prevailed over by passion and anger.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be always addicted to wine, women and gambling and be swayed by desire and anger
मास्म धर्मे मनो भूयादधर्मं स निषेवताम्।

अपात्रवर्षी भवतु यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.42।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, अस्य his, मनः mind, धर्मे in virtue, मा भूयात् shall not stay, सः he, अधर्मे in unrighteousness, निषेवताम् will practise, अपात्रवर्षी भवतु shall confer charity on the unworthy.

May the mind of that man who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother not be established in virtue May he practise unrighteousness and confer charity on the unworthy
सञ्चितान्यस्य वित्तनि विविधानि सहस्रशः।

दस्युभिर्विप्रलुप्यन्तां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.43।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, अस्य for that man's, सहस्रशः in thousands, सञ्चितानि accumulated, विविधानि वित्तानि various, possessions of wealth, दस्युभिः by thieves, विप्रलुप्यन्ताम् be snatched away.

May that man's accumulated extensive posssessions of various kinds of wealth be snatched away by thieves in thousands of ways if he had counselled the exile of my esteemed brother
उभे सन्ध्ये शयानस्य यत्पापं परिकल्प्यते।

तच्चपापं भवेत्तस्य यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.44।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, तस्य for that man, उभे सन्ध्ये at the twilight hour of dawn and dusk, शयानस्य sleeping, यत् पापम् the extent of sin, परिकल्प्यते is fixed, तत् पापम् that sin, भवेत् shall be.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the extent of demerit fixed for a person, who sleeps at the hour of twilight of dawn and dusk
यदग्निदायके पापं यत्पापं गुरतल्पगे।

मित्रद्रोहे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम्।।2.75.45।।


अग्निदायके one who sets fire to human settlements, यत् पापम् sin of such act, गुरुतल्पगे violation of the preceptor's bed, यत् पापम् sin of such act, मित्रद्रोहे betraying a friend, यत् पापम् sin of such act, तत् पापम् sin of that act, प्रतिपद्यताम् be obtained.

May that one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a person who sets fire to human settlements, violates the preceptors's bed and betrays his friend
देवतानां पित्रूणां च मातापित्रोस्तथैव च।

मा स्म कार्षीत्स शुश्रूषां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.46।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that man, देवतानाम् for gods, पित्रूणाम् to ancestors, तथा च in the same way, मातापित्रोः for parents, शुश्रूषाम् serve, मा स्म कार्षीत् shall not do.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, acquire the sin in the same way as a person who fails to show obedience to the gods and the ancestors and to serve his parents
सतां लोकात्सतां कीर्त्या स्सञ्जुष्टात्कर्मणस्तथा।

भ्रश्यतु क्षिप्रमद्यैव यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.47।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that person, अद्यैव now, क्षिप्रम् this very moment, सताम् virtuous men's, लोकात् from the world, सताम् virtuous men's, कीर्त्याः from renown, तथा and, सञ्जुष्टात् approved by virtuous men, कर्मणः from actions, भ्रश्यतु be expelled.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be expelled this very moment from the world approved by virtuous men, from their renown and from their (noble) actions
अपास्य मातृशुश्रूषामनर्थे सोऽवतिष्ठताम्।

दीर्घबाहुर्महावक्षा: यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.48।।


दीर्घबाहुः longarmed, महावक्षाः broadchested, आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that person, मातृशुश्रूषाम् ministration to mother, अपास्य abdicating, अनर्थे without purpose, अवतिष्ठताम् shall remain.

The one who counselled the exile of my noble, longarmed and broadchested brother be banished like the one who commited the sin of leaving the ministration to his mother and engaging himself in purposeless acts
बहुपुत्रो दरिद्रश्च ज्वररोगसमन्वितः।

स भूयात्सतत क्लेशी यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.49।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that person, बहुपुत्रः possessing many sons, दरिद्रः impoverished, ज्वररोगसमन्वितः suffering from fever and
disease, सततं क्लेशी भूयात् be always miserble.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be always miserable with many sons, poverty and fever and disease
आशामाशंसमानानां दीनानामूर्ध्वचक्षुषाम्।

अर्थिनां वितथां कुर्याद्यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.50।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः was exiled, that person, आशंसमानानाम् seeking, दीनानाम् pitiable ones, ऊर्ध्वचक्षुसाम् of those raising their eyes in hope towards donors, अर्थिनाम् mendicants', आशाम् hope, वितथाम् futile, कुर्यात् may make.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person disappoints who miserable mendicants seeking alms and looking up to him for help
मायया रमतां नित्यं परुषः पिशुनोऽशुचिः।

राज्ञो भीतस्त्वधर्मात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.51।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that person, परुषः abusive, पिशुनः niggardly, अशुचिः impure, अधर्मात्मा unrighteous, नित्यम् always, राज्ञः from the king, भीतः afraid of, मायया by deceit, रमताम् will entertain his life.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a person, who is abusive, niggardly, impure, unrighteous and always afraid of being caught by the king, and lives by cheating others, acquires
ऋतुस्नातां सतीं भार्यामृतुकालानुरोधिनीम्।

अतिवर्तेत दुष्टात्मा यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.52।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that person, दुष्टात्मा wickedminded, ऋतुकालानुरोधिनीम् observing the menstrual period unfavourable for
conception, ऋतुस्नाताम् a woman who bathed after menstruation,सतीम् chaste woman, भार्याम् wife, अतिवर्तेत may neglect.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a wickedminded person who neglects his chaste wife observing the menstrual period unfavourable for conception and had bathed after menstruation acquires
सधर्मदारान्परित्यज्य परदारान्निषेवताम्।

त्यक्तधर्मरतिर्मूढो यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.53।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, that person मूढः foolish one, त्यक्तधर्मरतिः abandoned righteous conduct, धर्मदारान् rightfully married wife, परित्यज्य having forsaken, परदारान् other's wife, निषेवताम् may resort.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a foolish person who abandons righteous conduct and forsakes his rightfully married wife and resorts to other man's wife acquires
विप्रलुप्तप्रजातस्य दुष्कृतं ब्राह्मणस्य यत्।

तदेव प्रतिपद्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.54।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, विप्रलुप्तप्रजातस्य lacking in children, ब्राह्मणस्य to brahmin, यत् दुष्कृतम् that demerit, तदेव the same, प्रतिपद्यताम् shall obtain.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin like that of a lowbred brahmin who commits an irreversible sin acquires
पानीयदूषके पापं तथैव विषदायके।

यत्तदेकस्स लभतां यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.55।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, सः that person, एकः only alone, पानीयदूषके in the case of a man who pollutes drinking water, तथैव similarly, विषदायके administers poison to others, यत् पापम् such sin, लभताम् will obtain.

May the sin of polluting drinking water and administering poison to others be put together and be incurred by the man who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother
ब्राह्मणायोद्यतां पूजां विहन्तु कलुषेन्द्रियः।

बालवत्सां च गां दोग्धु यस्यार्यो ऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.56।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, (सः that person), कलुषेन्द्रियः with befouled senses, ब्राह्मणाय to a brahmin, उद्यताम् kept ready, पूजाम् offerings of worship, विहन्तु may disturb, बालवत्साम् having a young calf, गाम् cow, दोग्धु may milk.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person with befouled senses disturbs the offerings of worship kept ready for a brahmin and milks the cow having a young calf acquires.
तुर्ष्णार्तं सति पानीये विप्रलम्भेन योजयेत्।

लभेत तस्य यत्पापं यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.57।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, (सः that person), पानीये water, सति existing, तृष्णार्तम् thirsty one, विप्रलम्भेन by deceipt, योजयेत् arranges, तस्य to him, यत् पापम् whatever sin, लभेत will result.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person who in possession of water does not give it to one suffering from
thirst acquires it
भक्त्या विवदमानेषु मार्गमाश्रित्य पश्यतः।

तस्य पापेन युज्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः।।2.75.58।।


आर्यः esteemed one, यस्य whose, अनुमते with sanction, गतः exiled, भक्त्या by loyalty (to two religious factions), विवदमानेषु while disputing, मार्गम् one line of argument, आश्रित्य taking shelter, पश्यतः seeing, तस्य to him, पापेन by such sin, युज्येत will apply.

May that one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person acquires while giving onesided judgement between divided religious disputants
विहीनां पतिपुत्राभ्यां कौसल्यां पार्थिवात्मजः।

एवमाश्वासयन्नेव दुःखार्तो निपपात ह।।2.75.59।।


पार्थिवात्मजः king's son, Bharata, पतिपुत्राभ्याम् of husband and son, विहीनाम् deprived of, कौशल्याम् Kausalya, एवम् in this way, आश्वासयन्नेव while appeasing, दुःखार्तः filled with grief, निपपात ह fell down at her feet.

While thus appeasing Kausalya deprived of her husband and son, Bharata, filled with grief, fell down at her feet.
तथा तु शपथैः कष्टै श्शपमानमचेतनम्।

भरतं शोकसन्तप्तं कौसल्या वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।2.75.60।।


तथा in this manner, कष्टैः by painful, शपथैः on oaths, शपमानम् swearing, अचेतनम् lying unconscious, शोकसन्तप्तम् consumed with grief, भरतम् Bharata, कौशल्या Kausalya, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Kausalya said these words to Bharata who fell unconscious, consumed with grief, while swearing on painful oaths.
मम दुःखमिदं पुत्र भूयस्समुपजायते।

शपथै श्शपमानो हि प्राणानुपरुणत्सि मे।।2.75.61।।


पुत्र son, मम to me, इदं दुःखम् this suffering, भूयः still more, समुपजायते is growing, शपथैः by oaths, शपमानः swearing, मे my, प्राणान् life, उपरुणत्सि हि you are obstructing (choking).

O son by swearing on oaths, you are choking the very breath of my life and my suffering has grown still more.
दिष्ट्या न चलितो धर्मादात्मा ते सहलक्ष्मणः।

वत्स सत्यप्रतिज्ञो ते सतां लोकमवाप्स्यसि।।2.75.62।।


वत्स O dear child, दिष्ट्या fortunately, ते your, आत्मा mind, धर्मात् form righteousness, न चलितः unswerved, सत्यप्रतिज्ञः truthful to promise, सहलक्ष्मणः with Lakshmana, सताम् virtuous men's, लोकम् world, अवाप्स्यसि you shall attain.

O dear child, fortunately your mind is unswerved from righteousness. You being truthful to your promise shall attain the world of virtuous men along with Lakshmana.
इत्युक्त्वा चाङ्कमानीय भरतं भ्रातृवत्सलम्।

परिष्वज्य महाबाहुं रुरोद भृशदुःखिता।।2.75.63।।


भ्रातृवत्सलम् a man affectionate towards his brothr, भरतम् addressing Bharata, इति thus , उक्त्वा having said, अङ्कम् on her lap, आनीय drawing into, महाबाहुम् mightyarmed one, परिष्वज्य hugged, भृशदुःखिता with extreme grief, रुरोद cried out.

After having addressed Bharata, who was affectionate towards his brother that way, Kausalya drew the mightyarmed one onto her lap and hugged him and cried out with extreme grief.
एवं विलपमानस्य दुःखार्तस्य महात्मनः।

मोहाच्च शोकसम्रोधाद्बभूव लुलितं मनः।।2.75.64।।


एवम् in this way, विलपमानस्य while lamenting, दुःखार्तस्य afflicted by sorrow, महात्मनः great
Bharata's, मनः mind, मोहाच्च due to swooning, शोकसम्रोधात् due to being besieged by grief, लुलितम् बभूव became unsteady.

Afflicted by sorrow and lamenting thus, great Bharata's mind became unsteady owing to swooning and besieged by grief.
लालप्यमानस्य विचेतनस्य प्रणष्टबुद्धे: पतितस्य भूमौ।

मुहुर्मुहुर्निश्श्वसतश्च घर्मं सा तस्य शोकेन जगाम रात्रिः।।2.75.65।।


लालप्यमानस्य lamenting, विचेतनस्य having lost the senses, प्रणष्टबुद्धे: with obscured mind, भूमौ on the ground, पतितस्य one having fallen down, मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, घर्मम् warm, निःश्वसतः heaving deep sighs, तस्य to that Bharata, रात्रिः that night, शोकेन in grief, जगाम passed off.

That night passed off in grief for Bharata, who fell on the ground with his mind clouded and his senses lost. He lamented again and again, heaving deep, warm sighs.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे पञ्चसप्ततितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the seventyfifth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
