[Bharata and Satrughna meet grief-stricken Kausalya --- Kausalya reproaches Bharata harshly --- Bharata appeases Kausalya and curses himself --- Kausalya gets convinced of Bharata's conviction.]

dīrghakālātsamutthāya saṅjñāṅ labdhvā ca vīryavān.

nētrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāṅ dīnāmudvīkṣya mātaram৷৷2.75.1৷৷

sō.mātyamadhyē bharatō jananīmabhyakutsayat.


vīryavān valiant, saḥ bharataḥ that Bharata, dīrghakālāt after a long time, samutthāya risen up, saṅjñām senses, labdhvā ca having regained, aśrupūrṇābhyām filled with tears, nētrābhyām with eyes, dīnām unfortunate, mātaram mother, udvīkṣya having looked up, amātyamadhyē in the midst of counsellors, jananīm mother, abhyakutsayat condemned.

On regaining his senses after a long time, the valiant Bharata looked at his unfortunate mother whose eyes were filled with tears, and condemned her amidst the counsellors.
rājyaṅ na kāmayē jātu mantrayē nāpi mātaram৷৷2.75.2৷৷

abhiṣēkaṅ na jānāmi yō.bhūdrājñā samīkṣitaḥ.

viprakṛṣṭēhyahaṅ dēśē śatrughnasahitō.vasam৷৷2.75.3৷৷


jātu at any time, rājyam kingdom, na kāmayē I do not wish, mātaram api even (with) mother, na mantrayē consulted, yaḥ the consecration, rājñā by king, samīkṣitaḥ abhūt has been supervised, abhiṣēkam consecration, na jānāmi am not aware, aham I, śatrughnasahitaḥ with Satrughna, viprakṛṣṭē in a distant, dēśē country, avasam hi stayed.

Neither did I ever desire the kingdom nor did I ever consult my mother in this regard and I am not even aware of the consecration that was planned by the king for I was away in a distant country with Satrughna.
vanavāsaṅ na jānāmi rāmasyāhaṅ mahātmanaḥ.

vivāsanaṅ vā saumitrē ssītāyāśca yathā.bhavat৷৷2.75.4৷৷


aham I, mahātmanaḥ of great, rāmasya Rama's, vanavāsam banishment, na jānāmi do not know, saumitrēḥ Lakshmana's, sītāyāśca Sita's, vivāsanam exile, yathā abhavat how it happened.

I knew nothing of the banishment of great Rama nor did I know how Lakshmana or Sita had gone on exile.
tathaiva krōśatastasya bharatasya mahātmanaḥ.

kausalyā śabdamājñāya sumitrāmidamabravīt৷৷2.75.5৷৷


tathaiva in that way, krōśataḥ wailing, mahātmanaḥ of the magnanimous, bharatasya Bharata's, śabdam sound, ājñāya having recognised, kauśalyā Kausalya, sumitrām addressing Sumitra, idam these words, abravīt spoke.

As magnanimous Bharata was wailing, Kausalya recognised his voice and said to Sumitra:
āgataḥ krūrakāryāyāḥ kaikēyyā bharatassutaḥ.

tamahaṅ draṣṭumicchāmi bharataṅ dīrghadarśinam৷৷2.75.6৷৷


krūrakāryāyāḥ of a woman of cruel deeds, kaikēyyāḥ Kaikeyi's, sutaḥ son, bharataḥ Bharata, āgataḥ has come, dīrghadarśinam far-sighted, taṅ bharatam that Bharata, aham I, draṣṭum to see, icchāmi I am wishing

Bharata, the far-sighted son of Kaikeyi of cruel deeds has come and I wish to see him.
ēvamuktvā sumitrāṅ sā vivarṇā malinā kṛśā.

pratasthē bharatō yatra vēpamānā vicētanā৷৷2.75.7৷৷


vivarṇā turned pallid, malinā sullied, kṛśā emaciated, sā that Kausalya, sumitrām to Sumitra,
ēvam thus, uktvā having uttered, vēpamānā trembling, vicētanā almost lifeless, bharataḥ Bharata, yatra wherever, pratasthē set out.

Having said so to Sumitra, Kausalya trembling and almost lifeless, emaciated, sullied and turned pallid set out for the place where Bharat was.
sa tu rāmānujaścāpi śatrughnasahitastadā.

pratasthē bharatō yatra kausalyāyā nivēśanam৷৷2.75.8৷৷


tadā then, rāmānujaḥ younger brother of Rama, saḥ bharataḥ tu Bharata on his part, śatrughnasahitaḥ accompanied by Satrughna, kauśalyāyāḥ to Kausalya's, nivēśanam residence, yatra wherever, pratasthē proceeded.

But at the same time Bharata, the younger brother of Rama accompanied by Satrughna proceeded to the place where Kausalya resided.
tata śśatrughnabharatau kausalyāṅ prēkṣya duḥkhitau.

paryaṣvajētāṅ duḥkhārtāṅ patitāṅ naṣṭacētasām৷৷2.75.9৷৷

rudantau rudatīṅ duḥkhātsamētyāryāṅ manassvinīm.


tataḥ then, śatrughnabharatau Satrughna and Bharata, duḥkhārtām grief-stricken, naṣṭacētasām semi conscious, rudatīm weeping, āryām venerable, manassvinīm noble-hearted, kauśalyām Kausalya, prēkṣya having seen, duḥkhitau overcome with sorrow, rudantau agonised, duḥkhāt with great sorrow, samētya having approached, paryaṣvajētām hugged.

Then agonised Bharata and Satrughna, beholding that venerable, noble-hearted, grief-stricken, weeping Kausalya who was almost semiconscious overcome with grief, approached her with great sorrow and hugged her.
bharataṅ pratyuvācēdaṅ kausalyā bhṛśaduḥkhitā৷৷2.75.10৷৷

idaṅ tē rājyakāmasya rājyaṅ prāptamakaṇṭakam.

saṅprāptaṅ bata kaikēyyā śaśīghraṅ krūrēṇa karmaṇā৷৷2.75.11৷৷


bhṛśaduḥkhitā deeply afflicted, kauśalyā Kausalya, bharataṅ prati looking at Bharata, idam these words, uvāca said, rājyakāmasya of one desirous of the kingdom, tē to you, idam this, akaṇṭakam without obstacles, rājyam kingdom, prāptam has been acquired, kaikēyyāḥ Kaikeyi's, krūrēṇa by crooked, karmaṇā with act, śīghram quickly, samprāptam secured, bata alas.

Looking at Bharata, the deeply afflicted Kausalya said, The kingdom which you had desired has been acquired without any obstacle. Alas! Kaikeyi had quickly secured it for you through her crooked act.
prasthāpya cīravasanaṅ putraṅ mē vanavāsinam.

kaikēyī kaṅ guṇaṅ tatra paśyati krūradarśinī৷৷2.75.12৷৷


krūradarśinī one of cruel thoughts, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, mē my, putram son, cīravasanam clad in bark robes, vanavāsinam a forest-dweller, prasthāpya having sent, tatra there, kam what, guṇam advantage, paśyati sees?

What advantage did cruel Kaikeyi visualize in sending away my son to dwell in the forest wearing robes of bark?
kṣipraṅ māmapi kaikēyī prasthāpayitumarhati.

hiraṇyanābhō yatrāstē sutō mē sumahāyaśāḥ৷৷2.75.13৷৷


sumahāyaśāḥ illustrious, hiraṇyanābhaḥ golden-navalled one, mē sutaḥ my son, yatra whereever, āstē stays, māmapi me also, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, kṣipram without delay, prasthāpayitum to send me, arhati behoves her.

Kaikeyi should send me also without any delay to that place where my illustrious
Rama with golden navel dwells.
athavā svayamēvāhaṅ sumitrānucarā sukham.

agnihōtraṅ puraskṛtya prasthāsyē yatra rāghavaḥ৷৷2.75.14৷৷


athavā or else, aham I, svayamēva on my own, sumitrānucarā with Sumitra as companion, agnihōtram with sacred fire, puraskṛtya holding in front of me, rāghavaḥ Rama, yatra where, sukham happily, prasthāsyē shall set out.

Or else I, accompanied by Sumitra, shall go happily on my own holding the sacred fire in front to that place where Rama dwells.
kāmaṅ vā svayamēvādya tatra māṅ nētumarhasi.

yatrāsau puruṣavyāghraḥ putrō mē tapyatē tapaḥ৷৷2.75.15৷৷


vā or, puruṣavyāghraḥ tiger among men, mē putrō my son, asau this Rama, yatra where, tapaḥ the austerities, tapyatē performing, tatra there, svayamēva yourself, adya now, mām me, kāmam certainly indeed, nētum to take, arhasi behoves you.

Or, you should now take me personally to that place where, my son Rama, the best among men, is performing austerities.
idaṅ hi tava vistīrṇaṅ dhanadhānyasamācitam.

hastvaśvarathasampūrṇaṅ rājyaṅ niryātitaṅ tayā৷৷2.75.16৷৷


hastyaśvarathasampūrṇam abounding in elephants, horses and chariots, dhanadhānyasamācitam with abundace of wealth and grain, vistīrṇam vast, idaṅ rājyam this kingdom, tayā by her, tava to you, niryātitaṅ hi has been delivered.

This vast kingdom, with all its abundance of wealth and grain, elephants, horses and chariots has been delivered to you by her.
ityādibahubhirvākyaiḥ krūraiḥ sambhartsitō.naghaḥ.

vivyathē bharatastīvraṅ vraṇē tudyēva sūcinā৷৷2.75.17৷৷


ityādi like this, bahubhiḥ by many, krūraiḥ harsh, vākyaiḥ with words, sūcinā with needle, vraṇē in the wound, tudyēva as if by piercing, sambhartsitaḥ reproached, anaghaḥ sinless, bharataḥ Bharata, tīvram intensely, vivyathē was afflicted.

Thus reproached by many a harsh word, like needle pricking a wound, the sinless Bharata was intensely pained.
papāta caraṇau tasyāstadā sambhrāntacētanaḥ.

vilapya bahudhā.saṅjñō labdhasaṅjñastataḥ sthitaḥ৷৷2.75.18৷৷


tadā then, sambhrāntacētanaḥ with senses reeling, tasyāḥ her, caraṇau feet, papāta fell, bahudhā repeatedly, vilapya lamenting, asaṅjñaḥ unconscious, tataḥ then, labdhasaṅjñaḥ on regaining the senses, sthitaḥ stood.

(Having heard these words), his senses reeling, he became unconscious, lamented profusaly and fell at her feet. And on regaining his senses, he stood motionless.
ēvaṅ vilapamānāṅ tāṅ bharataḥ prāñjalistadā.

kausalyāṅ pratyuvācēdaṅ śōkairbahubhirāvṛtām৷৷2.75.19৷৷


tadā then, bharataḥ Bharata, prāñjaliḥ his palms joined in reverence, ēvam in that manner, vilapamānām lamenting, bahubhiḥ intense, śōkaiḥ with sorrow, āvṛtām overwhelmed with, tāṅ kauśalyām that Kausalya, idam these words, pratyuvāca replied.

As Kausalya was lamenting in this manner, overwhelmed with deep grief, Bharata, his palms joined in reverence, replied her in these words:
āryē! kasmādajānantaṅ garhasē māmakilbiṣam.

vipulāṅ ca mama prītiṅ sthirāṅ jānāsi rāghavē৷৷2.75.20৷৷


āryē! O noble lady, ājānantam unaware, akilbiṣam guiltless, mām me, kasmāt for what
reason, garhasē upbraiding, rāghavē in Rama, mama my, vipulām profound, sthirām steadfast, prītim affection, jānāsi you know.

O noble lady! unaware (of what had happened), I am guiltless. Why do you upbraid me? You know well my profound, steadfast affection for Raghava (Rama).
kṛtā śāstrānugā buddhirmābhūttasya kadācana.

satyasandha ssatāṅ śrēṣṭhō yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.21৷৷


satyasandhaḥ bound to truth, satām śrēṣṭhaḥ best among virtuous men, āryaḥ noble (Rama), yasya whose anumatē with sanction, gataḥ banished, tasya his, buddhiḥ thought, kadācana at any time, śāstrānugā adhered to the scriptures, kṛtā steadfast, mā bhūt let it not happen.

Did not the one who counselled the banishment of my noble brother who is steadfast and bound by truth and virtue, ever adhered to scriptures?
(or)
My noble brother (Rama), the best among the virtuous, bound to truth, is banished. Let not such thought occur at any time to one who steadfastly adheres to scriptures!
prēṣyaṅ pāpīyasāṅ yātu sūryañca pratimēhatu.

hantu pādēna gāṅ suptāṅ yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.22৷৷


āryaḥ noble one (Rama), yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, pāpīyasām the most sinful of men, prēṣyam servitude, yātu shall obtain, sūryaṅ ca prati facing the Sun, mēhatu pass urine, suptām sleeping, gām cow, pādēna by foot, hantu kick.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, Rama be cursed with the sin of undergoing servitude in the hands of most sinful of men, the sin of passing urine facing the Sun and of kicking a sleeping cow.
kārayitvā mahatkarma bhartā bhṛtyamanarthakam.

adharmō yō.sya sō.syāstu yasyā.ryō.numatēgataḥ৷৷2.75.23৷৷


āryaḥ noble one, yasya whose, anumatē counsel, gataḥ was exiled, asya that man, yaḥ bhartā the master, bhṛtyam his servant, anarthakam without remuneration, mahat difficult, karma work, kārayitvā having got done, asya to that man, yaḥ adharmaḥ acquire the unrighteousness, saḥ that must, astu be it in that way.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the demerit of unrighteousness in the same way as a master who gets a difficult work done by a servant without remuneration.
paripālayamānasya rājñō bhūtāni puyatravat.

tatasnu duhyatāṅ pāpaṅ yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.24৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ was exiled, for him rājñaḥ by the king, bhūtāni his subjects, putravat like his own children, paripālayamānasya is ruling, tataḥ father indeed, druhyatām who are treacherously acting, pāpam sin, tat shall happen.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a man acting treacherously against a king who rules like a father and protects his subjects like his own children, acquires.
baliṣaḍbhāgamuddhṛtya nṛpasyārakṣataḥ prajāḥ.

adharmō yō.sya sō.syāstu yasyārthō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.25৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, asya for him, baliṣaḍbhāgam sixth portion of their revenue as tax, uddhṛtya having received, nṛpasya of the king, prajāḥ the people, arakṣataḥ while not protecting, asya for him, adharmaḥ that unrighteousness, sa: that one, astu so be it.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire
unrighteousness in the same way as a king who, having received one sixth of the income as tax from people does not protect them!
saṅśrutya ca tapasvibhyassatrē vai yajñadakṣiṇām.

tāṅ vipralapatāṅ pāpaṅ yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.26৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, tapasvibhyaḥ for ascetics, satrē at sacrifice, yajñadakṣiṇām the offerings at a sacrifice, saṅśrutya having promised, tām that one, vipralavatām those who deny them later, pāpam acquire sin.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a person acquires for having promised the ascetics the required offering at a sacrifice and later denies them!
hastyaśvarathasambādhē yuddhē śastrasamākulē.

mā sma kārṣītsatāṅ dharmaṅ yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.27৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, hastyaśvarathasambādhē abundantly provided with elephants, horses and chariots, śastrasamākulē filled with weapons, yuddhē in a battle, satām virtuous men's, dharmam righteous, mā sma kārṣīt
shall not do.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the demerit in the same way as a person, who having gone to the battleground abundantly provided with elephants, horses, chariots and weapons fails to discharge the duty (of a fighter)!
upadiṣṭaṅ susūkṣmārthaṅ śāstraṅ yatnēna dhīmatā.

sa nāśayatu duṣṭātmā yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.28৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one (Rama), yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that man, duṣṭātmā evil-hearted one, dhīmatā by a sagacious preceptor, yatnēna carefully, upadiṣṭam imparted, susūkṣmārtham having subtle meaning, śāstram scriptures, nāśayata may destroy.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire demerit in the same way as an evil-hearted person who forever destroys the subtle meaning of the scriptures imparted carefully by a sagacious preceptor!
mā ca taṅ vyūḍhabāhvaṅsaṅ candrārkasamatējasam.

drākṣīdrājyasthamāsīnaṅ yasyāryō.numatēgataḥ৷৷2.75.29৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one (Rama), yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, vyūḍhabāhvaṅsam long-armed and broad-shoulderd one, candrārkasamatējasam resembling Sun and Moon in radiance, rājyastham on the throne, āsīnam seated, tam that Rama, mā ca drākṣīt never behold him.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be highly unfortunate like me in not being able to behold that long-armed and broad-shoulderd one seated on the throne and resembling both the Sun and the Moon in radiance!
pāyasaṅ kṛsaraṅ chāgaṅ vṛthā sō.śnātu nirghṛṇaḥ.

gurūṅścāpyavajānātu yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.30৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ was exiled, nirghṛṇaḥ pitiless, saḥ that person, pāyasam sweet milk-rice, kṛsaram sesame-rice, chāgam goat's flesh, vṛthā without purpose (without offering to the gods), aśnātu may partake, gurūn preceptors, avajānātu ca may be disrespected.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the demerit in the same way as a person, who partakes the sweet milk-rice, sesame-rice and goat's flesh without purpose (without invoking and offering it to the gods) and disrespects the teachers!
gāśca spṛśatu pādēna gurūnparivadētsvayam.

mitrē druhyēta sō.tyantaṅ yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.31৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ was exiled, saḥ that person, pādēna with foot, gāḥ cows, spṛśatu may touch (kick), svayam himself, gurūn elders, parivadēt may be abused, mitrē friend, atyantam greately, druhyēta causes offence.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person who kicks the cows abuses elders and causes great offence to his friends!
viśvāsātkathitaṅ kiñcitparivādaṅ mithaḥ kvacit.

vivṛṇōtu sa duṣṭātmā yasyā.ryō.matē gataḥ৷৷2.75.32৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ duṣṭātmā that wicked-minded man, kvacit at some place, mithaḥ secretly, viśvāsāt in confidence, kathitam told, kiñcit little, parivādam words of abuse, vivṛṇōtu may divulge.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, acquire the sin in the same way as a wicked-minded person, who divulges the words of abuse secretly confided in him by his friends.
akartā hyakṛtajñaśca tyaktācā.tmā nirapatrapaḥ.

lōkē bhavatu vidviṣṭō yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.33৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ was exiled, akartā one who never helps, akṛtajñaḥ ca an ungrateful one, tyaktātmā one who deserted his life, nirapatrapa: shameless one, lōkē in this world, vidviṣṭō bhavatu worthy to be hated.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be hated universally as one who never helps any one, who is ungrateful, shameless and as one who has committed the sin of suicide!
putrairdāraiśca bhṛtyaiśca svagṛhē parivāritaḥ.

sa ēkō mṛṣṭamaśnātu yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.34৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that man, svagṛhē in his own house, putrairdāraiśca by wife and children, bhṛtyaiśca by servants, parivāritaḥ surrounded, ēkaḥ alone, mṛṣṭam delicacies, aśnātu will partake.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as one who, although surrounded by wife, children and servants, eats the delicacies all alone without sharing acquires.
aprāpya sadṛśān dārānanapatyaḥ pramīyatām.

anavāpya kriyāṅ dharmyāṅ yasyā.ryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.35৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that man, sadṛśān worthy, dārān wife, aprāpya without getting, anapatyaḥ without begetting offspring, dharmyām religious, kriyām deeds, anavāpya without performing, pramīyatām let him die.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother die without winning a worthy wife and without begetting offspring and without performing religious deeds!
mā.tmanassantatiṅ drākṣītsvēṣu dārēṣu duḥkhitaḥ.

āyussamagramaprāpya ya.syāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.36৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that man, samagram entire, āyuḥ life, aprāpya begetting, duḥkhitaḥ anguished, svēṣu relating to him, dārēṣu in wife, ātmanaḥ his own, santatim children, mā drākṣīt will not see.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother live an entire life of anguish without begetting children through his wife or without seeing his own children!
rājastrībālavṛddhānāṅ vadhē yatpāpamucyatē.

bhṛtyatyāgē ca yatpāpaṅ tatpāpaṅ pratipadyatām৷৷2.75.37৷৷


rājastrībālavṛddhānām of the king, woman, children and the aged, vadhē kills, yat pāpam whatever sin, ucyatē is mentioned in scriptures, bhṛtyatyāgē ca desertion of the dependents as well, yat pāpam whatever sin, tat (pāpaṅ) such (sin), pratipadyatām be obtained.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin as one acquires for murdering a king, a woman, children and the aged and deserting dependents!
lākṣayā madhumāṅsēna lōhēna ca viṣēṇa ca.

sadaiva bibhṛyādbhṛtyānyasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.38৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that man, sadaiva always, bhṛtyān dependant wife and children, lākṣayā in lac, madhu māṅsēna in wine and meat, lōhēna in metal, viṣēṇa ca and in poison, bibhṛyāt supports.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin as one who supports his wife and children by trafficking in lac, wine, meat and metal and poison acquires!
saṅgramē samupōḍhē sma śatrupakṣabhayaṅkarē.

palāyāmānō vadhyēta yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.39৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that man, śatrupakṣabhayaṅkarē saṅgramē in war, samupōḍhē when at its peak, palāyamānaḥ feeling, vadhyēta be slain.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin like a warrior, dreadful to the enemy side who will be slain while fleeing from the war at its peak!
kapālapāṇiḥ pṛthivīmaṭatāṅ cīrasaṅvṛtaḥ.

bhikṣamāṇō yathōnmattō yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.40৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that man, kapālapāṇiḥ with a human skull in hand, cīrasaṅvṛtaḥ covered by rags, bhikṣamāṇaḥ begging for alms, unmattō yathā like a insane man, pṛthivīm on this earth, aṭatām may wander.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, wander this earth, begging alms, holding a human skull like an insane man dressed in rags!
madyē prasaktō bhavatu strīṣvakṣēṣu ca nityaśaḥ.

kāmakrōdhābhibhūtastu yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.41৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that man, nityaśaḥ always, madyē in wine, strīṣu in women, akṣēṣu ca in dice for gambling, prasaktaḥ addicted, kāmakrōdhābhibhūtaḥ bhavatu shall be prevailed over by passion and anger.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be always addicted to wine, women and gambling and be swayed by desire and anger!
māsma dharmē manō bhūyādadharmaṅ sa niṣēvatām.

apātravarṣī bhavatu yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.42৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, asya his, manaḥ mind, dharmē in virtue, mā bhūyāt shall not stay, saḥ he, adharmē in unrighteousness, niṣēvatām will practise, apātravarṣī bhavatu shall confer charity on the unworthy.

May the mind of that man who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother not be established in virtue! May he practise unrighteousness and confer charity on the unworthy!
sañcitānyasya vittani vividhāni sahasraśaḥ.

dasyubhirvipralupyantāṅ yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.43৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, asya for that man's, sahasraśaḥ in thousands, sañcitāni accumulated, vividhāni vittāni various, possessions of wealth, dasyubhiḥ by thieves, vipralupyantām be snatched away.

May that man's accumulated extensive posssessions of various kinds of wealth be snatched away by thieves in thousands of ways if he had counselled the exile of my esteemed brother!
ubhē sandhyē śayānasya yatpāpaṅ parikalpyatē.

taccapāpaṅ bhavēttasya yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.44৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, tasya for that man, ubhē sandhyē at the twilight hour of dawn and dusk, śayānasya sleeping, yat pāpam the extent of sin, parikalpyatē is fixed, tat pāpam that sin, bhavēt shall be.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the extent of demerit fixed for a person, who sleeps at the hour of twilight of dawn and dusk!
yadagnidāyakē pāpaṅ yatpāpaṅ guratalpagē.

mitradrōhē ca yatpāpaṅ tatpāpaṅ pratipadyatām৷৷2.75.45৷৷


agnidāyakē one who sets fire to human settlements, yat pāpam sin of such act, gurutalpagē violation of the preceptor's bed, yat pāpam sin of such act, mitradrōhē betraying a friend, yat pāpam sin of such act, tat pāpam sin of that act, pratipadyatām be obtained.

May that one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a person who sets fire to human settlements, violates the preceptors's bed and betrays his friend!
dēvatānāṅ pitrūṇāṅ ca mātāpitrōstathaiva ca.

mā sma kārṣītsa śuśrūṣāṅ yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.46৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that man, dēvatānām for gods, pitrūṇām to ancestors, tathā ca in the same way, mātāpitrōḥ for parents, śuśrūṣām serve, mā sma kārṣīt shall not do.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother, acquire the sin in the same way as a person who fails to show obedience to the gods and the ancestors and to serve his parents!
satāṅ lōkātsatāṅ kīrtyā ssañjuṣṭātkarmaṇastathā.

bhraśyatu kṣipramadyaiva yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.47৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that person, adyaiva now, kṣipram this very moment, satām virtuous men's, lōkāt from the world, satām virtuous men's, kīrtyāḥ from renown, tathā and, sañjuṣṭāt approved by virtuous men, karmaṇaḥ from actions, bhraśyatu be expelled.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be expelled this very moment from the world approved by virtuous men, from their renown and from their (noble) actions!
apāsya mātṛśuśrūṣāmanarthē sō.vatiṣṭhatām.

dīrghabāhurmahāvakṣā: yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.48৷৷


dīrghabāhuḥ long-armed, mahāvakṣāḥ broad-chested, āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that person, mātṛśuśrūṣām ministration to mother, apāsya abdicating, anarthē without purpose, avatiṣṭhatām shall remain.

The one who counselled the exile of my noble, long-armed and broad-chested brother be banished like the one who commited the sin of leaving the ministration to his mother and engaging himself in purposeless acts!
bahuputrō daridraśca jvararōgasamanvitaḥ.

sa bhūyātsatata klēśī yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.49৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that person, bahuputraḥ possessing many sons, daridraḥ impoverished, jvararōgasamanvitaḥ suffering from fever and
disease, satataṅ klēśī bhūyāt be always miserble.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother be always miserable with many sons, poverty and fever and disease !
āśāmāśaṅsamānānāṅ dīnānāmūrdhvacakṣuṣām.

arthināṅ vitathāṅ kuryādyasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.50৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ was exiled, that person, āśaṅsamānānām seeking, dīnānām pitiable ones, ūrdhvacakṣusām of those raising their eyes in hope towards donors, arthinām mendicants', āśām hope, vitathām futile, kuryāt may make.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person disappoints who miserable mendicants seeking alms and looking up to him for help!
māyayā ramatāṅ nityaṅ paruṣaḥ piśunō.śuciḥ.

rājñō bhītastvadharmātmā yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.51৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that person, paruṣaḥ abusive, piśunaḥ niggardly, aśuciḥ impure, adharmātmā unrighteous, nityam always, rājñaḥ from the king, bhītaḥ afraid of, māyayā by deceit, ramatām will entertain his life.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a person, who is abusive, niggardly, impure, unrighteous and always afraid of being caught by the king, and lives by cheating others, acquires!
ṛtusnātāṅ satīṅ bhāryāmṛtukālānurōdhinīm.

ativartēta duṣṭātmā yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.52৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that person, duṣṭātmā wicked-minded, ṛtukālānurōdhinīm observing the menstrual period unfavourable for
conception, ṛtusnātām a woman who bathed after menstruation,satīm chaste woman, bhāryām wife, ativartēta may neglect.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way as a wicked-minded person who neglects his chaste wife observing the menstrual period unfavourable for conception and had bathed after menstruation acquires!
sadharmadārānparityajya paradārānniṣēvatām.

tyaktadharmaratirmūḍhō yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.53৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, that person mūḍhaḥ foolish one, tyaktadharmaratiḥ abandoned righteous conduct, dharmadārān rightfully married wife, parityajya having forsaken, paradārān other's wife, niṣēvatām may resort.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a foolish person who abandons righteous conduct and forsakes his rightfully married wife and resorts to other man's wife acquires!
vipraluptaprajātasya duṣkṛtaṅ brāhmaṇasya yat.

tadēva pratipadyēta yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.54৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, vipraluptaprajātasya lacking in children, brāhmaṇasya to brahmin, yat duṣkṛtam that demerit, tadēva the same, pratipadyatām shall obtain.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the same sin like that of a low-bred brahmin who commits an irreversible sin acquires!
pānīyadūṣakē pāpaṅ tathaiva viṣadāyakē.

yattadēkassa labhatāṅ yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.55৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, saḥ that person, ēkaḥ only alone, pānīyadūṣakē in the case of a man who pollutes drinking water, tathaiva similarly, viṣadāyakē administers poison to others, yat pāpam such sin, labhatām will obtain.

May the sin of polluting drinking water and administering poison to others be put together and be incurred by the man who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother!
brāhmaṇāyōdyatāṅ pūjāṅ vihantu kaluṣēndriyaḥ.

bālavatsāṅ ca gāṅ dōgdhu yasyāryō .numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.56৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, (saḥ that person), kaluṣēndriyaḥ with befouled senses, brāhmaṇāya to a brahmin, udyatām kept ready, pūjām offerings of worship, vihantu may disturb, bālavatsām having a young calf, gām cow, dōgdhu may milk.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person with befouled senses disturbs the offerings of worship kept ready for a brahmin and milks the cow having a young calf acquires.
turṣṇārtaṅ sati pānīyē vipralambhēna yōjayēt.

labhēta tasya yatpāpaṅ yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.57৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, (saḥ that person), pānīyē water, sati existing, tṛṣṇārtam thirsty one, vipralambhēna by deceipt, yōjayēt arranges, tasya to him, yat pāpam whatever sin, labhēta will result.

May the one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person who in possession of water does not give it to one suffering from
thirst acquires it!
bhaktyā vivadamānēṣu mārgamāśritya paśyataḥ.

tasya pāpēna yujyēta yasyāryō.numatē gataḥ৷৷2.75.58৷৷


āryaḥ esteemed one, yasya whose, anumatē with sanction, gataḥ exiled, bhaktyā by loyalty (to two religious factions), vivadamānēṣu while disputing, mārgam one line of argument, āśritya taking shelter, paśyataḥ seeing, tasya to him, pāpēna by such sin, yujyēta will apply.

May that one who counselled the exile of my esteemed brother acquire the sin in the same way a person acquires while giving one-sided judgement between divided religious disputants!
vihīnāṅ patiputrābhyāṅ kausalyāṅ pārthivātmajaḥ.

ēvamāśvāsayannēva duḥkhārtō nipapāta ha৷৷2.75.59৷৷


pārthivātmajaḥ king's son, Bharata, patiputrābhyām of husband and son, vihīnām deprived of, kauśalyām Kausalya, ēvam in this way, āśvāsayannēva while appeasing, duḥkhārtaḥ filled with grief, nipapāta ha fell down at her feet.

While thus appeasing Kausalya deprived of her husband and son, Bharata, filled with grief, fell down at her feet.
tathā tu śapathaiḥ kaṣṭai śśapamānamacētanam.

bharataṅ śōkasantaptaṅ kausalyā vākyamabravīt৷৷2.75.60৷৷


tathā in this manner, kaṣṭaiḥ by painful, śapathaiḥ on oaths, śapamānam swearing, acētanam lying unconscious, śōkasantaptam consumed with grief, bharatam Bharata, kauśalyā Kausalya, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Kausalya said these words to Bharata who fell unconscious, consumed with grief, while swearing on painful oaths.
mama duḥkhamidaṅ putra! bhūyassamupajāyatē.

śapathai śśapamānō hi prāṇānuparuṇatsi mē৷৷2.75.61৷৷


putra! son, mama to me, idaṅ duḥkham this suffering, bhūyaḥ still more, samupajāyatē is growing, śapathaiḥ by oaths, śapamānaḥ swearing, mē my, prāṇān life, uparuṇatsi hi you are obstructing (choking).

O son! by swearing on oaths, you are choking the very breath of my life and my suffering has grown still more.
diṣṭyā na calitō dharmādātmā tē sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.

vatsa! satyapratijñō tē satāṅ lōkamavāpsyasi৷৷2.75.62৷৷


vatsa O dear child, diṣṭyā fortunately, tē your, ātmā mind, dharmāt form righteousness, na calitaḥ unswerved, satyapratijñaḥ truthful to promise, sahalakṣmaṇaḥ with Lakshmana, satām virtuous men's, lōkam world, avāpsyasi you shall attain.

O dear child, fortunately your mind is unswerved from righteousness. You being truthful to your promise shall attain the world of virtuous men along with Lakshmana.
ityuktvā cāṅkamānīya bharataṅ bhrātṛvatsalam.

pariṣvajya mahābāhuṅ rurōda bhṛśaduḥkhitā৷৷2.75.63৷৷


bhrātṛvatsalam a man affectionate towards his brothr, bharatam addressing Bharata, iti thus , uktvā having said, aṅkam on her lap, ānīya drawing into, mahābāhum mighty-armed one, pariṣvajya hugged, bhṛśaduḥkhitā with extreme grief, rurōda cried out.

After having addressed Bharata, who was affectionate towards his brother that way, Kausalya drew the mighty-armed one onto her lap and hugged him and cried out with extreme grief.
ēvaṅ vilapamānasya duḥkhārtasya mahātmanaḥ.

mōhācca śōkasamrōdhādbabhūva lulitaṅ manaḥ৷৷2.75.64৷৷


ēvam in this way, vilapamānasya while lamenting, duḥkhārtasya afflicted by sorrow, mahātmanaḥ great
Bharata's, manaḥ mind, mōhācca due to swooning, śōkasamrōdhāt due to being besieged by grief, lulitam babhūva became unsteady.

Afflicted by sorrow and lamenting thus, great Bharata's mind became unsteady owing to swooning and besieged by grief.
lālapyamānasya vicētanasya praṇaṣṭabuddhē: patitasya bhūmau.

muhurmuhurniśśvasataśca gharmaṅ sā tasya śōkēna jagāma rātriḥ৷৷2.75.65৷৷


lālapyamānasya lamenting, vicētanasya having lost the senses, praṇaṣṭabuddhē: with obscured mind, bhūmau on the ground, patitasya one having fallen down, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, gharmam warm, niḥśvasataḥ heaving deep sighs, tasya to that Bharata, rātriḥ that night, śōkēna in grief, jagāma passed off.

That night passed off in grief for Bharata, who fell on the ground with his mind clouded and his senses lost. He lamented again and again, heaving deep, warm sighs.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē pañcasaptatitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the seventyfifth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
