[Guha's reminiseesces.]

ācacakṣē.tha sadbhāvaṅ lakṣmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ.

bharatāyāpramēyāya guhō gahanagōcaraḥ৷৷2.86.1৷৷


atha then, gahanagōcaraḥ forest ranger, guhaḥ Guha, apramēyāya to a man of immeasurable (virtues), bharatāya to Bharata, mahātmanaḥ of the magnanimous, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, sadbhāvam good nature, ācacakṣē explained.

Then Guha, the forest ranger, described to Bharata the countless qualities of the good-natured, magnanimous Lakshmana:
taṅ jāgrataṅ guṇairyuktaṅ śaracāpāsidhāriṇam.

bhrātṛguptyarthamatyantamahaṅ lakṣmaṇamabṛvam৷৷2.86.2৷৷


aham I, bhrātṛguptyartham for the sake of protecting his brother, atyantam completely, jāgratam keeping awake, śaracāpāsidhāriṇam holding arrows, bow and sword, guṇaiḥ with virtues, yuktam endowed with, taṅ lakṣmaṇam that Lakshmana, abṛvam I said.

I spoke to the virtuous Lakshmana, who was holding arrows, bow and sword in his hand and keeping awake completely for the protection of his brother.
iyaṅ tāta! sukhā śayyā tvadarthamupakalpitā.

pratyāśvasihi śēṣvāsyāṅ sukhaṅ rāghavanandana৷৷2.86.3৷৷


rāghavanandana delight of the race of Raghu, tāta! my friend, (lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana), sukhā comfortable, iyam this, śayyā couch, tvadartham for your sake, upakalpitā has been arranged, pratyāśvasihi be assured, asyām upon it, sukham peacefully, śēṣva lie down.

My friend, Lakshmana, the delight of the Raghavas! this comfortable couch has been arranged for you. Lie down peacefully without any anxiety.
ucitō.yaṅ janassarvō duḥkhānāṅ tvaṅ sukhōcitaḥ.

dharmātmaṅstasya guptyarthaṅ jāgariṣyāmahē vayam৷৷2.86.4৷৷


dharmātman O righteous one, ayam this, sarvaḥ all, janaḥ people, duḥkhānām for hardships, ucitaḥ are accustomed, tvam you, sukhōcitaḥ are used to comfort, tasya for Rama's, guptyartham for the sake of protection, vayam we, jāgariṣyāmahē will stay awake.

O righteous one! you are used to conforts where as all of our people are accustomed to hardships. So we will stay awake and protect Rama.
nahi rāmātpriyatarō mamāsti bhuvi kaścana.

mōtsukō.bhūrbravīmyētadapyasatyaṅ tavāgrataḥ৷৷2.86.5৷৷


mama for me, bhuvi on earth, rāmāt more than Rama, priyataraḥ dearer, kaścana none, nāsti hi does not exist, atha and, utsukaḥ anxious, mā bhūḥ do not have, tava your, agrataḥ in presence, ētat this, satyam truthful, vākyam words, bravīmi I am telling.

To me, there is none on earth dearer than Rama. Do not have any anxiety. I am telling you the truth.
asya prasādādāśaṅsē lōkē.smin sumahadyaśaḥ.

dharmāvāptiṅ ca vipulāmarthakāmau ca kēvalam৷৷2.86.6৷৷


asya this Rama's, prasādāt grace, asmin in this lōkē world, sumahat great, yaśaḥ renown, vipulām abundance of, dharmāvāptiṅ ca advantage of righteousness, kēvalam solely, arthakāmau ca artha (prosperity) and kama (pleasure), āśaṅsē I desire.

By the grace of Rama, I want to acquire in this world great renown, abundance of righteousness, absolute artha (prosperity) and kama (pleasure).
sō.haṅ priyasakhaṅ rāmaṅ śayānaṅ saha sītayā.

rakṣiṣyāmi dhanuṣpāṇi ssarvai ssvairjñātibhissaha৷৷2.86.7৷৷


saḥ ahaṅ as for me, sarvaiḥ with all, svaiḥ own, jñātibhiḥ saha with relatives, sītayā saha along with Sita, śayānam asleep, priyasakham dear friend, rāmam to Rama, dhanuṣpāṇiḥ bow in hand, rakṣiṣyāmi I will protect.

As for me, bow in hand and all my kinsmen with me, I shall protect my dear friend Rama who is resting with Sita.
na hi mē.viditaṅ kiñcidvanē.smiṅścarata ssadā.

caturaṅgaṅ hyapi balaṅ prasahēma vayaṅ yudhi৷৷2.86.8৷৷


asmin vanē in this forest, sadā always, carataḥ ranging, mē to me, aviditam unknown, kiñcit nothing, na hi not, vayam we, yudhi in the battle, caturaṅgaṅ balam api four divisions of the army also, prasahēma hi will withstand.

Nothing is unknown to me in this forest in which I range about continually. We can withstand an army of four divisions in a battle.
ēvamasmābhiruktēna lakṣmaṇēna mahātmanā.

anunītā vayaṅ sarvē dharmamēvānupaśyatā৷৷ 2.86.9৷৷


ēvaṅ thus, asmābhiḥ by us, uktēna having been uttered, mahātmanā by the magnanimous, dharmamēva virtuousness alone, anupaśyatā seeing, lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, vayam we, sarvē all, anunītāḥ have been entreated.

The magnanimous Lakshmana, established in dharma, replied:
kathaṅ dāśarathau bhūmau śayānē saha sītayā.

śakyā nidrā mayā labdhuṅ jīvitaṅ vā sukhāni vā৷৷2.86.10৷৷


dāśarathau Rama, sītayā saha with Sita, bhūmau on the ground, śayānē while sleeping, mayā by me, nidrā sleep, labdhum to obtain, katham how, śakyā is it possible, jīvitaṅ vā either life, sukhāni vā or comforts.

While Rama sleep on the ground with Sita, how can I find sleep or joy or comfort?
yō na dēvāsuraissarvaiśśakyaḥ prasahituṅ yudhi.

taṅ paśya guha! saṅviṣṭaṅ tṛṇēṣu saha sītayā৷৷2.86.11৷৷


guha O Guha, yaḥ that Rama, sarvaiḥ by all, dēvāsuraiḥ by gods and demons, yudhi in battle, prasahituṅ to withstand, na śakyaḥ not possible, tam him, sītayā saha with Sita, tṛṇēṣu on the grass, saṅviṣṭam lying down, paśya behold.

O Guha! behold Rama, whom gods and demons combined cannot withstand in a battle now lying on a bed of grass with Sita.
mahatā tapasā labdhō vividhaiśca pariśramaiḥ.

ēkō daśarathasyaiṣa putrassadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ৷৷2.86.12৷৷


ēṣaḥ this Rama, mahatā by great, tapasā with austerities, vividhaiḥ by various, pariśramaiśca with efforts as well, labdhaḥ was obtained, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, ēkaḥ one, sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ one with very similar virtues, putraḥ is the son.

Rama is the only one among the sons who resembles his father in various virtues. Dasaratha obtained him after a great deal of austerities and efforts as well.
asminpravrājitē rājā na ciraṅ vartayiṣyati.

vidhavā mēdinī nūnaṅ kṣipramēva bhaviṣyati৷৷2.86.13৷৷


asmin when he, pravrājitē is exiled, rājā king Dasaratha, ciram for a long time, na vartayiṣyati will not survive, nūnam surely, mēdinī earth, kṣipramēva soon, vidhavā widow, bhaviṣyati will become.

After Rama is exiled, king Dasaratha will not survive for long and surely the earth will soon be widowed.
vinadya sumahānādaṅ śramēṇōparatāḥ striyaḥ.

nirghōṣō viratō nūnamadhya rājanivēśanē৷৷2.86.14৷৷


striyaḥ women, sumahānādam loud sounds, vinadya having cried, śramēṇa with exhaustion, uparatāḥ have ceased, adya now, rājanivēśanē in the king's palace, nirghōṣaḥ clamour, nūnam surely, virataḥ has subsided.

The women of the inner apartment who lamented loudly, must have stopped weeping out of weariness. By now, the clamour in the king's palace would have surely subsided.
kausalyā caiva rājā ca tathaiva jananī mama.

nāśaṅsē yadi jīvēyussarvē tē śarvarīmimām৷৷2.86.15৷৷


kausalyā caiva even Kausalya, rājā ca king also, tathaiva in the same way, mama jananī my mother, tē sarvē all of them, imām this, rajanīm night, yadi jīvēyuḥ if they are alive, nāśaṅsē I do not think.

I doubt whether the king, Kausalya and my mother Sumitra and the rest of them will outlive this night.
jīvēdapi ca mē mātā śatrughnasyānvavēkṣayā.

duḥkhitā yā tu kausalyā vīrasūrvinaśiṣyati৷৷2.86.16৷৷


mē mātā my mother, śatrughnasya Satrughna's, anvavēkṣayā looking at, jīvēdapi ca might be alive, vīrasūḥ mother of a warrior, yā kausalyā that Kausalya, sā tu as for her, duḥkhitā with extreme grief, vinaśiṣyati will die.

My mother might live, looking at Satrughna. But Kausalya, who is the mother of a hero, will die from extreme grief.
atikrāntamatikrāntamanavāpya manōratham.

rājyē rāmamanikṣipya pitā mē vinaśiṣyati৷৷2.86.17৷৷


mē pitā my father, atikrāntam atikrāntam gone by one after another, manōratham cherished desire, anavāpya without fulfilling, rājyē in the kingdom, rāmam Rama, anikṣipya without placing, vinaśiṣyati will pass away.

My father, king Dasaratha, failing to fulfil his cherished desires one after another and unable to place Rama on the throne, will pass away.
siddhārthāḥ pitaraṅ vṛttaṅ tasminkālē hyupasthitē.

prētakāryēṣu sarvēṣu saṅskariṣyanti bhūmipam৷৷2.86.18৷৷


tasminkālē when that moment, upasthitē had arrived, vṛttam being in that state, pitaram my father, bhūmipam for the lord of the earth, sarvēṣu all, prētakāryēṣu in funeral rites, saṅskariṣyanti will perform, siddhārthāḥ men who attained their purpose.

When the moment of death arrives for my father, those who perform the funeral rites for him would have fulfilled their desire.
ramyacatvarasaṅsthānāṅ suvibhaktamahāpathām.

harmyaprāsādampannāṅ sarvaratnavibhūṣitām৷৷2.86.19৷৷

gajāśvarathasaṅbādhāṅ tūryanādavināditām.

sarvakalyāṇasaṅpūrṇāṅ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulām৷৷2.86.20৷৷

ārāmōdyānasaṅpūrṇāṅ samājōtsavaśālinīm.

sukhitā vicariṣyanti rājadhānīṅ piturmama৷৷2.86.21৷৷


ramyacatvarasasthānām with lovely cross-roads and squares, suvibhaktamahāpathām well-laid highways, harmyaprāsādasaṅpannām full of mansions and palaces, sarvaratnavibhūṣitām encrusted with every kind of precious stone, gajāśvarathasaṅbādhām full of elephants, horses and chariots, tūryanādavināditām resounding with trumpets, sarvakalyāṇasaṅpūrṇām with universal well-being, hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulām crowded with healthy people, ārāmōdyānasaṅpūrṇām with plenty of pleasure-gardens and parks, samājōtsavaśālinīm shining with community festivities, mama pituḥ my father's, rājadhānīm capital (Ayodhya), sukhitāḥ with all comforts, vicariṣyanti will move about.

There in the capital of my father with its lovely cross-roads and squares, well-laid highways, full of mansions and palaces encrusted with all kinds of precious stones, teeming with elephants, horses and chariots, resounding with trumpets, and with well-being everywhere, and plenty of pleasure-gardens, and parks and community festivals, people sound in health would be moving about in great comfort.
apisatyapratijñēna sārdhaṅ kuśalinā vayaṅ.

nivṛttē samayē hyasmin sukhitāḥ praviśēmahi৷৷2.86.22৷৷


vayaṅ we, āsmin in this, samayē the time, nivṛttē returning, satyapratijñēna who fulfilled his vow, kuśalinā sārdhaṅ along with him in safe condition, sukhitāḥ with happiness, api praviśēmahi will we enter Ayodhya?

Can we ever re-enter Ayodhya happily after safely fulfilling the vow and completing the term of exile?
paridēvayamānasya tasyaivaṅ sumahātmanaḥ.

tiṣṭhatō rājaputrasya śarvarī sā.tyavartata৷৷2.86.23৷৷


sumahātmanaḥ of the high-minded, ēvaṅ in this way, paridēvayamānasya lamenting so, tasya rājaputrasya that prince, tiṣṭhataḥ while waiting, sā śarvarī that night, atyavartata elapsed.

While the high-minded prince was lamenting this way and was waiting, the night passed off.
prabhātē vimalē sūryē kārayitvā jaṭā ubhau.

asmin bhāgīrathītīrē sukhaṅ santāritau mayā৷৷2.86.24৷৷


vimalē when bright, sūryē Sun, prabhātē at dawn, ubhau both, āsmin in this, bhāgīrathītīrē on the bank of Bhagirathi, jaṭāḥ matting their hair, kārayitvā made, mayā by me, sukham comfortably, santāritau were ferried.

The next morning when the Sun shone bright, both of them matted their hair on the bank of the river Bhagirathi (Ganga) and I ferried them across comfortably.
jaṭādharau tau drumacīravāsasau mahābalau kuñjarayūthapōpamau.

varēṣucāpāsidharau parantapau vyapēkṣamāṇau saha sītayā gatau৷৷2.86.25৷৷


jaṭādharau wearing matted hair, drumacīravāsasau those two dressed in bark robes, mahābalau of great strength, kuñjarayūthapōpamau comparable to elephants, varēṣucāpāsidharau armed with excellent bows, arrows and swords, tau both, parantapau slayers of enemies, vyapēkṣamāṇau looking back alertly, sītayā saha along with Sita, gatau went.

Rama and Lakshmana, slayers of enemies, who are as strong as bull elephants, with their hair matted, wearing robes made of bark, armed with excellent bows, arrows and swords went along with Sita looking around (vigilantly).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē ṣaḍaśītitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the eightysixth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
