[Guha ferries Bharata, Satrughna and all others across Ganga --- Bharata sets out to meet sage Bharadwaja.]

uṣya rātriṅ tu tatraiva gaṅgākūlē sa rāghavaḥ.

bharataḥ kālyamutthāya śatrughnamidamabravīt৷৷2.89.1৷৷


rāghavaḥ born in the race of Raghu, saḥ bharataḥ that Bharata, tatra there, gaṅgākūlē ēva on the bank of the river Ganga only, rātrim night, uṣya having stayed, kālyam at day-break, utthāya rising, śatrughnam Satrughna, idam these words, abravīt spoke.

Bharata got up at daybreak after spending the night on the bank of the Ganga at that very place where Rama, the descendent of Raghu, had stayed. And said these words to Satrughna:
śatrughnōttiṣṭha kiṅ śēṣē niṣādādhipatiṅ guham.

śīghramānaya bhadraṅ tē tārayiṣyati vāhinīm৷৷2.89.2৷৷


śatrughna Satrughna, uttiṣṭha arise, kim why, śēṣē are you asleep, tē for you, bhadram blessings to you, niṣādādhipatim overlord of Nishada, guham Guha, śīghram quickly, ānaya fetch, vāhinīm the army, tārayiṣyati he will help us in ferrying across.

O Satrughna, blessings to you! Why are you still alseep? Arise! fetch Guha the king of the nishadas quickly. He will ferry the army across the river.
jāgarmi nāhaṅ svapimi tamēvā.ryaṅ vicintayan.

ityēvamabravīdbhrāttā śatrughnō.pi pracōditaḥ৷৷2.89.3৷৷


bhrātā the brother, śatrughnō.pi Satrughna also, pracōditaḥ having been urged upon, aham I, tam that, āryam ēva about esteemed brother Rama only, vicintayan thinking about, jāgarmi I am
awake, na svapimi not sleeping, ityēvam in this way, abravīt said.

Urged by his brother Bharata, Satrughna replied 'I am not asleep. I am awake. I am deeply thinking of our esteemed brother, Rama'
iti saṅvadatōrēvamanyōnyaṅ narasiṅhayōḥ.

āgamya prāñjaliḥ kālē guhō bharatamabravīt৷৷2.89.4৷৷


narasiṅhayōḥ lions among men, Bharata and Satrughna, ityēvam in this way, anyōnyam with one another, saṅvadatōḥ while both of them were conversing, guhaḥ Guha, kālē at appropriate time, āgamya having arrived, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, bharatam to Bharata, abravīt said.

While the two lions among men, Bharata and Satrughna were thus conversing with each other, Guha came in the appropriate time and said to Bharata with folded palms:
kaccitsukhaṅ nadītīrē.vātsīḥ kākutstha śarvarīm.

kaccittē saha sainyasya tāvatsarvamanāmayam৷৷2.89.5৷৷


kākutthsa O scion of the Kakutstha race (Bharata), śarvarīm night, nadītīrē on the bank of the river, sukham comfortably, kaccit vātsīḥ you had passed, I hope, saha sainyasya along with the army, tē to you, sarvam all, anāmayaṅ tāvat kaccit there was no inconvenience, I trust.

O scion of the Kakutstha race (Bharata)! I trust, you and your army passed the night on the river bank comfortably without any inconvenience.
guhasya vacanaṅ śrutvā tattu snēhādudīritam.

rāmasyānuvaśō vākyaṅ bharatō.pīdamabravīt৷৷2.89.6৷৷


rāmasya of Rama, anuvaśaḥ obedient, bharatō.pi Bharata too, snēhāt out of affection, udīritam uttered, tat that, guhasya Guha's, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, idaṅ vākyam these words, abravīt said.

On hearing Guha's affectionate words Bharata, ever obedient to Rama, replied:
sukhā na śśarvarī rājan! pūjitāścāpi tē vayam.

gaṅgāṅ tu naubhirbahvībhirdāśāssantārayantu naḥ৷৷2.89.7৷৷


rājan! O king!, naḥ for us, śarvarī the night, sukhā comfortable, vayam we, tē to (by) you, pūjitāścāpi have been honoured, dāśāḥ fishermen, bahvībhiḥ by many, naubhiḥ boats, naḥ us, gaṅgām the river Ganga, santārayantu please, ferry us across.

O king (Guha)! the night passed comfortably for us. We have been honoured by you in many ways. Let your fishermen be ordered to ferry us across the Ganga in their boats.
tatō guha ssantvaritaṅ śrutvā bharataśāsanam.

prati praviśya nagaraṅ taṅ jñātijanamabravīt৷৷2.89.8৷৷


tataḥ then, guhaḥ Guha, santvaritam quickly, bharataśāsanam at Bharata's command, śrutvā having heard, nagaram his establishment, prati praviśya having entered, tam that, jñātijanam to his relations, abravīt said.

Then at Bharata's command Guha returned to his habitation quickly and said to his relations:
uttiṣṭhata prabudhyadhvaṅ bhadramastu ca vassadā.

nāva ssamanukarṣadhvaṅ tārayiṣyāma vāhinīm৷৷2.89.9৷৷


uttiṣṭhata arise, prabudhyadhvam awake, sadā always, vaḥ bhadram astu be blessed, nāvaḥ the boats, samanukarṣadhvam haul down, vāhinīm the army, tārayiṣyāma we shall ferry them across.

Arise and awake. May you be ever blessed. Haul down the boats into the river. We have to ferry the army (across the river).
tē tathōktā ssamutthāya tvaritā rājaśāsanāt.

pañcanāvāṅ śatānyāśu samāninyussamantataḥ৷৷2.89.10৷৷


tathā thus, uktāḥ addressed, tē they, rājaśāsanāt by the king's command, tvaritāḥ in haste, āśu immediately, samantataḥ from every direction, nāvām of the boats, pañcaśatāni five hundreds, samāninyuḥ brought.

On hearing these words, they arose in haste and immediately brought five hundred boats from every direction in accordance with the command of their king (Guha).
anyā ssvastikavijñēyā mahāghaṅṭādharā varāḥ.

śōbhamānāḥ patākābhiryuktavātāssusaṅhatāḥ৷৷2.89.11৷৷


mahāghaṅṭādharāḥ fitted with large bells, varāḥ excellent, patākābhiḥ with flags, śōbhamānāḥ looking magnificent, yuktavātāḥ filled with sails, susaṅhatāḥ built solidly, svastikavijñēyāḥ known as Swastika, anyāḥ also some other boats (brought).

They brought excellent boats known as Swastika, solidly built, they lookd magnificent, filled with large bells, sails and flags.
tata ssvastikavijñēyāṅ pāṇḍukambalasaṅvṛtām.

sanandighōṣāṅ kalyāṇīṅ guhō nāvamupāharat৷৷2.89.12৷৷


tataḥ then, guhaḥ Guha, pāṇḍukambalasaṅvṛtām covered with white canvas, sanandighōṣām generating aptivating sounds, kalyāṇīṅ auspicious, svastikavijñēyām known as Swastika, nāvam boat, upāharat brought.

Then Guha personally brought an auspicious boat known as Swastika covered with white canvas and generating captivating sounds.
tāmārurōha bharataśśatrughnaśca mahābalaḥ.

kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāścānyā rājayōṣitaḥ৷৷2.89.13৷৷

purōhitaśca tatpūrvaṅ guravō brāhmaṇāśca yē.

anantaraṅ rājadārāstadaiva śakaṭāpaṇāḥ৷৷2.89.14৷৷


bharataḥ Bharata, tām ārurōha boarded it, mahābalaḥ of great strength, śatrughnaśca Satrughna also, kausalyā ca Kausalya, sumitrā ca Sumitra, anyāḥ other, yāḥ rājayōṣitaḥ other royal women, tatpūrvam before them, purōhitaśca family priest (Vasistha), guravaḥ preceptors, yē brāhmaṇāśca such brahmins, anantaram thereafter, rājadārāḥ king's wives, tathaiva also, śakaṭāpaṇāḥ wagons and supplies.

The family priest (Vasistha) and other brahmins were the first to board. Next mighty
Bharata and Satrughna, Kausalya, Sumitra, women of the palace including the other wives of the king and wagons and supplies followed.
āvāsamādīpayatāṅ tīrthaṅ cāpyavagāhatām.

bhāṇḍāni cādadānānāṅ ghōṣastridivamaspṛśat৷৷2.89.15৷৷


āvāsam the shelters in that camp, ādīpayatām those who are burning, tīrthaṅ cāpi through the descent of the river, avagāhatām those who are going down, bhāṇḍāni supplies, ādadānānām of transporting, ghōṣaḥ clamour, tridivam the heaven, aspṛśat touched.

The clamour of the people setting fire to the temporary shelters in that camp, descending down the river and transporting the supplies into the boats reached the heaven.
patākinyastu tā nāvassvayaṅ dāśairadhiṣṭhitāḥ.

vahantyō janamārūḍhaṅ tadā sampēturāśugāḥ৷৷2.89.16৷৷


patākinyaḥ (adorned) with flags, dāśaiḥ by the fishermen, svayam themselves, adhiṣṭhitāḥ occupied, tāḥ nāvaḥ those boats, tadā then, ārūḍham boarded, janam men, vahnatyaḥ carrying, āśugāḥ swiftly rowing men, sampētuḥ moved.

Those boats adorned with flags were propelled by the fishermen occupying them. They sailed with men rowing on board fast.
nārīṇāmabhipūrṇā stu kāścit kāścicca vājinām.

kāścidatra vahanti sma yānayugyaṅ mahādhanam৷৷2.89.17৷৷


atra there, kāścit some boats, nārīṇām with women, abhipūrṇāḥ were filled with, kāścit some others, vājinām with horses, kāścit while still others, yānayugyam the draught animals for drawing carriages, mahādhanam great treasures, vahanti sma were transporting.

Some boats were filled with women, some others with horses. while still others
transported draught animals for drawing carriages and the great treasures.
tā ssma gatvā paraṅ tīramavarōpya ca taṅ janam.

nivṛttāḥ kāṇḍacitrāṇi kriyantē dāśabandhubhiḥ৷৷2.89.18৷৷


tāḥ those, paraṅ tīram the other bank, gatvā having reached, taṅ janam the men, avarōpya disembarked, nivṛttāḥ sma returned, dāśabandhubhiḥ the fisherfolk, kāṇḍacitrāṇi lovely formations with their craft, kriyantē sma exhibited.

Having reached the other bank, the men disembarked. While returning, the fisherfolk exhibited their craft of lovely formations.
savaijayantāstu gajā gajārōhapracōditāḥ.

taranta ssma prakāśantē sadhvajā iva parvatāḥ৷৷2.89.19৷৷


savaijayantāḥ embellished with banners, gajārōhapracōditāḥ goaded by their mahouts, gajāḥ the elephants, tarantaḥ while crossing the water, sadhvajāḥ with flags, parvatāḥ iva like mountains, prakāśantē sma were shining.

The elephants, embellished with banners and goaded by their mahouts looked
splendid like mountains with banners while crossing in the water.
nāvastvāruruhuścānyē plavaistēru stathāparē.

anyē kumbhaghaṭaistēruranyētēruśca bāhubhiḥ৷৷2.89.20৷৷


anyē other, nāvaḥ boats, āruruhuśca boarded, aparē others, tathā like that, plavaiḥ on rafts, tēruḥ crossed, anyē others, kumbhaghaṭaiḥ with large pots, tēruḥ crossed, anyē others, bāhubhiḥ with their arms, tēruḥ ca crossed.

Only some of the people were able to board the boats. Some others crossed on rafts and on large pots. Still others swam with their arms.
sā puṇyā dhvajinī gaṅgāṅ dāśaissantāritā svayam.

maitrē muhūrtē prayayau prayāgavanamuttamam৷৷2.89.21৷৷


dāśaiḥ by the fishermen, svayam themselves, gaṅgām the river Ganga, santāritā ferried over, puṇyā auspicious, sā dhvajinī army, maitrē muhūrtē at the auspicious hour of Maitra, uttamam great, prayāgavanam forest of Prayaga, prayayau reached.

The auspicious army, ferried across the river Ganga by the fishermen, reached the great forest of Prayaga at the auspicious hour of Maitra.
āśvāsayitvā ca camūṅ mahātmā nivēśayitvā ca yathōpajōṣam.

draṣṭuṅ bharadvājamṛṣipravarya mṛtvigvṛtassanbharataḥ pratasthē৷৷2.89.22৷৷


mahātmā the noble one, bharataḥ Bharata, camūm the army, āśvāsayitvā having rested, yathōpajōṣam according to their pleasure, nivēśayitvā having encamped, ṛṣipravaryam the distinguished rishi, bharadvājam Bharadwaja, draṣṭum to see, ṛtvigvṛtassan surrounded by his priests, pratasthē set out.

The noble Bharata, got his army encamped according to their pleasure and set out, accompanied by his priests, to see the distinguished sage Bharadwaja.
sa brāhmaṇasyā.śramamabhyupētya mahātmanō dēvapurōhitasya.

dadarśa ramyōṭajavṛkṣaṣaṇḍaṅ mahadvanaṅ vipravarasya ramyam৷৷2.89.23৷৷


saḥ Bharata, dēvapurōhitasya official priest of the gods, mahātmanaḥ of the eminent, brāhmaṇasya brahmin's, āśramam hermitage, abhyupētya having approached, ramyōṭajavṛkṣaṣaṇḍam delightful huts and multitude of trees, vipravarasya of the best brahmins, ramyam charming, mahat vanam great forest, dadarśa saw.

Approaching the hermitage of Bharadwaja, the eminent brahmin and official priest of the gods, Bharata saw the delightful huts and trees of the charming great forest.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē ayōdhyākāṇḍē ēkōnanavatitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the eightyninth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
