[Rama shares with Sita his delight of the beautiful nature around Chitrakuta mountain.]

दीर्घकालोषित स्तस्मिन्गिरौ गिरिवनप्रियः।

वैदेह्याः प्रियमाकाङ्क्षन्स्वं च चित्तं विलोभयन्।।2.94.1।।

अथ दाशरथिश्चित्रं चित्रकूटमदर्शयत्।

भार्याममरसङ्काश श्शचीमिव पुरन्दरः।।2.94.2।।


अथ thereafter, अमरसङ्काशः one who resembles the gods, गिरिवनप्रियः one fond of mountains and forests, तस्मिन् in that, गिरौ on the mountain, दीर्घकालोषितः who had been living for a long time, दाशरथिः Rama, वैदेह्याः Sita's, प्रियम् pleasure, आकाङ्क्षन् desiring, स्वम्
own, चित्तम् mind, विलोभयन् to please, चित्रम् wonderful, चित्रकूटम् Chitrakuta mountain, भार्याम् to his consort, पुरन्दरः Indra (breaker of fortresses), शचीमिव like Sachi, अदर्शयत् showed.

Rama, resembling the gods, who had been living there for long developed a liking for the mountains and forests. With a desire to please Sita and his own mind, he showed her the wonderful Chitrakuta mountain as Indra did to his wife Sachi.
दीर्घकालोषित स्तस्मिन्गिरौ गिरिवनप्रियः।

न राज्याद्भ्रंशनं भद्रे न सुहृद्भिर्विनाभवः।

मनो मे बाधते दृष्ट्वा रमणीयमिमं गिरिम्।।2.94.3।।


हे भद्रे O gentle one, इमम् this, रमणीयम् lovely, गिरिम् mountain, दृष्ट्वा beholding, राज्यात् from the kingdom, भ्रंशनम् expulsion, मे मनः my mind, न बाधते does not pain, सुहृद्भिर्विनाभवः separation from friends, न does not pain.

O gentle one, when I behold this lovely mountain, neither the expulsion from the kingdom nor being away from friends pains my mind.
पश्येममचलं भद्रे नानाद्विजगणायुतम्।

शिखरैः खमिवोद्विद्धैर्धातुमद्भिर्विभूषितम्।।2.94.4।।


भद्रे O auspicious one, नानाद्विजगणायुतम् abounding in flocks of birds of every kind, खम् the sky, उद्विद्धैरिव as if piercing, धातुमद्भि: with minerals, शिखरैः peaks, विभूषितम् adorned, इमम् this, अचलम् mountain, पश्य you may see.

O auspicious one, you may behold this mountin abounding in flocks of birds of every kind and its peaks adorned wtih minerals and as if piercing the sky.
केचिद्रजतसङ्काशाः केचित्क्षतजसंनिभाः।

पीतमाञ्जिष्टवर्णाश्च केचिन्मणिवरप्रभाः।।2.94.5।।

पुष्यार्ककेतकाभाश्च केचिज्ज्योतीरसप्रभाः।

विराजन्तेऽचलेन्द्रस्य देशा धातुविभूषिताः।।2.94.6।।


धातुविभूषिताः adorned with minerals, अचलेन्द्रस्य of this lord of the mountains, केचित् some, देशाः regions, रजतसङ्काशाः similar to (the radiance of) silver, केचित् some regions, क्षतजसंनिभाः are having bloodred colour, पीतमाञ्जिष्टवर्णाश्च (some) colour of maddercrimson, केचित् some, मणिवरप्रभाः sparkle like the best of gems, पुष्यार्ककेतकाभाश्च shining like topaz, or crystal or a flower of ketaka plant, केचित् some, ज्योतीरसप्रभाः shimmering like stars or quicksilver, विराजन्ते shining.

This mountain with its peaks is adorned with various minerals. Some of the regions have the radiance of silver and bronze, some look bloodred or maddercrimson, some sparkle like the rarest of gems while others shine like topaz or crystal or a flower of ketaka plant or shimmer like stars and quicksilver.
नानामृगगणद्वीपितरर्क्ष्वृक्षगणैर्वुतः।

अदुष्टैर्भात्ययं शैलो बहुपक्षिसमायुतः।।2.94.7।।


अयं शैलः this mountain, अदुष्टैः without being cruel, नानामृगगणद्वीपितरर्क्ष्वृक्षगणैः with herds of several kinds of animals like tigers, panthers and bears, वृतः surrounded by, बहुपक्षिसमायुतः united with flocks of birds, भाति is shining.

This mount Chitrakuta is swarmed by flocks of birds and herds of several kinds of animals like tigers, panthers and bears of every kind giving up their cruel nature.
आम्रजम्ब्वसनैर्लोध्रैः प्रियालैः पनसैर्धवैः।

अङ्कोलैर्भव्यतिनिशैर्बिल्वतिन्दुक वेणुभिः।।2.94.8।।

काश्मर्यरिष्टवरुणैर्मधूकैस्तिलकैस्तथा।

बदर्यामलकैर्नीपैर्वेत्रधन्वनबीजकैः।।2.94.9।।

पुष्पवद्भिः फलोपेतैश्छायावद्भिर्मनोरमैः।

एवमादिभिराकीर्णः श्रियं पुष्यत्ययं गिरिः।।2.94.10।।


अयं गिरिः this mountain, पुष्पवद्भिः covered with flowers, फलोपेतैः laden with fruits, छायावद्भिः shady, मनोरमैः enchanting, आम्रजम्ब्वसनैः mango, roseapples, asana trees, लोध्रैः lodhra trees, प्रियालैः priyala trees, पनसैः jackfruit trees, धवैः dhava trees, अङ्कोलैः ankola trees, भव्यतिनिशैः lovely tinisa trees, बिल्वतिन्दुकवेणुभिः bilva trees, tinduka and bamboo, काश्मर्यारिष्टवरुणैः kashmaya, arishta and varuna तथा similarly,मधूकैः madhuka trees, तिलकैः tilaka trees, बदर्यामलकै: badari and myrobalan trees, नीपैः kodamva trees, वेत्रधन्वनबीजकैः cane, danvas, and promegranates, एवमादिभि: with these kinds of trees, आकीर्णः spread over, श्रियम् splendour, पुष्यति enhancing.

This mountain is spread over with various kinds of flowering trees and trees laden with fruits, shady and enchanting, mango, roseapples, asanas, lodhras, priyalas, jackfruit trees, dhavas, ankolas, lovely tinisas, bilva trees, tinduka and bamboo, kashmaya, arishta and varuna, madhukas, tilaka trees, badari and myrobalan trees, nipa trees, cane, danvas, and promegranate trees, the mountain looks splendid.
शैलप्रस्थेषु रम्येषु पश्येमान् रोमहर्षणान्।

किन्नरान् द्वन्द्वशो भद्रे रममाणान्मनस्विनः।।2.94.11।।


भद्रे O auspicious one, रम्येषु in the beautiful, शैलप्रस्थेषु on the plateau, द्वन्द्वशः in pair, रममाणान् sporting, रोमहर्षणान् thrilling, मनस्विनः highspirited, इमान् these, किन्नरान् kinneras, पश्य behold.

O auspiciouslooking one, behold these highspirited kinneras in pairs who are sporting on the picturesque hill plateaus causing thrills.
शाखावसक्तान् खड्गांश्च प्रवराण्यम्बराणि च।

पश्य विद्याधरस्त्रीणां क्रीडोद्धेशान्मनोरमान्।।2.94.12।।


विद्याधरस्त्रीणाम् by Vidyadhara women, शाखावसक्तान् hanging from the branches, खड्गांश्च swords, प्रवराणि best, अम्बराणि च garments, मनोरमान् captivating, क्रीडोद्धेशान् sporting retreats, पश्य behold.

Behold the captivating sporting retreats of Vidyadharis, with their swords and best garments hung on the branches of the trees.
जलप्रपातैरुद्भेदैर्निष्यन्दैश्च क्वचित्क्वचित्।

स्रवद्भिर्भात्ययं शैल स्स्रवन्मद इव द्विपः।।2.94.13।।


अयम् this, शैलः mountain, क्वचित् क्वचित् here and there, स्रवद्भिः by the flowing, जलप्रपातैः waterfalls, उद्भेदैः sprouting from the earth, निष्यन्दैश्च fountains, स्रवन्मदः emitting the ichor, द्विपः इव like the elephant, भाति shining.

Behold a waterfall here and a fountain there gushing from the earth and in other places, the mountain looks like an elephant rutting ichor.
गुहासमीरणो गन्धान्नानापुष्पभवान्वहन्।

घ्राणतर्पणमभ्येत्य कं नरं न प्रहर्षयेत्।।2.94.14।।


नानापुष्पभवान् produced from many flowers, गन्धान् fragrance, वहन् carrying, गुहासमीरणः breeze from the caves, घ्राणतर्पणम् satisfying the sense of smell, अभ्येत्य going towards, कं नरम् which man, न प्रहर्षयेत् would not delight?

The breeze from the caves carrying the fragrance of many flowers is satisfying the sense of smell. Who will not find it delightful?
यदीह शरदोऽनेकास्त्वया सार्धमनिन्दिते।

लक्ष्मणेन च वत्स्यामि न मां शोकः प्रधक्ष्यति।।2.94.15।।


अनिन्दिते O flawless one, त्वया with you, लक्ष्मणेन च सार्धम् and in the company Lakshmana, इह here, अनेकाः many, शरदः autumns, वत्स्यामि यदि if I am to live, माम् me, शोकः grief, न प्रधक्ष्यति will not consume.

O flawless one, if I am to live here for many years to come with you and Lakshmana,
no grief will consume me.
बहुपुष्पफले रम्ये नानाद्विजगणायुते।

विचित्रशिखरे ह्यस्मिन्रतवानस्मि भामिनि।।2.94.16।।


भामिनि O lovely Sita, बहुपुष्पफले laden with abundance of flowers and fruits, नानाद्विजगणायुते flocked by different kinds of birds, विचित्रशिखरे on enchanting mountain peaks, रम्ये delightful, अस्मिन् on this mountain, रतवान् अस्मि हि I am fond of.

O lovely Sita, I am enamoured of this delightful mountain with its enchanting peaks laden with abundance of flowers and fruits and flocked by different kinds of birds.
अनेन वनवासेन मया प्राप्तं फलद्वयम्।

पितुश्चानृणता धर्मे भरतस्य प्रियं तथा।।2.94.17।।


अनेन by this, वनवासेन staying in the forest, धर्मे with regard to righteousness, पितुः to father, अनृणता discharge of debt, तथा also, भरतस्य Bharata's, प्रियम् pleasure, फलद्वयम्
twofold benefit, मया by me, प्राप्तम् have been obtained.

By living in the forest I have achieved a twofold benefitdischarge of debt of my father with regard to righteousness and causing happiness to Bharata.
वैदेहि रमसे कच्चिच्चित्रकूटे मया सह।

पश्यन्ती विविधान्भावान्मनोवाक्कायसम्मतान्।।2.94.18।।


हे वैदेहि O Sita, मनोवाक्कायसम्मतान् gratifying to body, speech and mind, विविधान् various, भावान् objects, पश्यन्ती observing, चित्रकूटे on Chitrakuta, मया सह along with me, रमसे कच्चित् are you enjoying?

O Sita, are you enjoying by being with me here on this Chitrakuta and observing various objects gratifying to the body, mind and speech?
इदमेवामृतं प्राहू राज्ञि राजर्षयः परे।

वनवासं भवार्थाय प्रेत्य मे प्रपितामहाः।।2.94.19।।


मे my, प्रपितामहाः greatgrandfathers, परे ancestors, राजर्षयः royal sages, प्रेत्य after death, भवार्थाय for best existence, इदम् this, वनवासमेव living in the forest, राज्ञि for the king, अमृतम् like nectar, प्राहुः said.

My greatgrandfathers and ancient royal sages used to say that living in the forest is like enjoying nectar for a king for the best existence after death.
शिला श्शैलस्य शोभन्ते विशाला श्शतशोऽभितः।

बहुला बहुलैर्वर्णैर्नीलपीतसितारुणैः।।2.94.20।।


बहुलैः several, नीलपीतसितारुणैः blueblack, yellow, white and red, वर्णैः colours, बहुलाः many, विशालाः massive, शैलस्य mountain's, शिलाः rocks, शतशः in hundreds, अभितः on all sides, शोभन्ते are looking splendid.

Several hundreds of massive rocks of the mountain look splendid all around, in blueblack, yellow, white and red colours.
निशिभान्त्यचलेन्द्रस्य हुताशनशिखा इव।

ओषध्यः स्वप्रभालक्ष्म्या भ्राजमाना स्सहस्रशः।।2.94.21।।


स्वप्रभालक्ष्म्या with the splendour of their own lustre, भ्राजमानाः illuminating, सहस्रशः in thousands, अचलेन्द्रस्य of this lord of the hills (Chitrakuta's), ओषध्यः herbs, निशि in the night, हुताशनशिखा इव like flames of fire, भान्ति shine.

Herbs in thousands on this king of the hills shine in the night with the splendour of their own lustre, like flames of fire.
केचित् क्षयनिभा देशाः केचिदुद्यानसन्निभाः।

केचिदेकशिला भान्ति पर्वतस्यास्य भामिनि।।2.94.22।।


भामिनि O lovely Sita, अस्य this, पर्वतस्य mountain's, केचित् some, देशाः regions, क्षयनिभाः like dwellings, केचित् some, उद्यानसन्निभाः like flower gardens, केचित् some, एकशिलाः in the form of a single rock, भान्ति are shining.

O lovely Sita Some regions of the mountain look like dwellingplaces, some others are like flowergardens and some are shining like a single rock.
भित्त्वेव वसुधां भाति चित्रकूटस्समुत्थितः।

चित्रकूटस्य कूटोऽसौ दृश्यते सर्वत श्शुभः।।2.94.23।।


चित्रकूटः Chitrakuta mountain, वसुधाम् this earth, भित्त्वा splitting open, समुत्थितः इव as if rising from, भाति shining, चित्रकूटस्य Chitrakuta's, असौ this, कूटः peak, सर्वतः on every side, शुभः gracious, दृश्यते is seen.

This Chitrakuta mountain stands erect as if it has arisen by splitting open the earth and its peak looks graceful from every side.
कुष्ठस्थगरपुन्नाग भूर्जपत्रोत्तरच्छदान्।

कामिनां स्वास्तरान्पश्य कुशेशयदलायुतान्।।2.94.24।।


कुष्ठस्थगरपुन्नाग भूर्जपत्रोत्तरच्छदान् covered with leaves of kustha, sthagara, punnaga and bhurja, कुशेशयदलायुतान् covered with lotus petals, कामिनाम् lovers, स्वास्तरान् excellent couches, पश्य behold.

Behold those excellent couches of lovers spread with leaves of kustha, sthagara, punnaga and bhurja and covered with lotus petals.
मृदिताश्चापविद्धाश्च दृश्यन्ते कमलस्रजः।

कामिभिर्वनिते पश्य फलानि विविधानि च।।2.94.25।।


वनिते O lady, कामिभिः by lovers, मृदिताश्च crushed, अपविद्धाश्च cast aside, कमलस्रजः lotus garlands, विविधानि many, फलानि च fruits, दृश्यन्ते can be seen, पश्य behold.

O Lady, behold those lotus garlands crushed and cast aside by lovers and also many fruits (tasted by them and) lying there.
वस्वौकसारां नलिनीमत्येतीवोत्तरान्कुरून्।

पर्वतश्चित्रकूटोऽसौ बहुमूलफलोदकः।।2.94.26।।


बहुमूलफलोदकः with abundance of roots, fruits and water, असौ this, चित्रकूट: पर्वत: Chitrakuta mountain, वस्वौकसाराम् Vasvaukasara, the capital city of Kubera, नलिनीम् Nalini, the celestial lake of Kubera, उत्तरान् कुरून् the land of Uttarakuru, अत्येतीव surpasses.

This Chitrakuta mountain, with abundance of roots, fruits and water surpasses in beauty Vasvaukasara, the capital city of Kubera or Nalini, his celestial garden or the land of Uttarakuru.
इमं तु कालं वनिते विजह्रिवांस्त्वया च सीते सह लक्ष्मणेन च।

रतिं प्रपत्स्ये कुलधर्मवर्धनीं सतां पथि स्वैर्नियमैः परैः स्थितः।।2.94.27।।


वनिते सीते O my beloved Sita, इमं कालम् this time, त्वया च with you, लक्ष्मणेन सह and also with Lakshmana, विजह्रिवान् wandering about, स्वैः by my own, परैः utmost, नियमैः restraint, सताम् virtuous men's, पथि path, स्थितः following, कुलधर्मवर्धनीम् as enhancing the righteousness of my race, रतिम् felicity, प्रपत्स्ये I shall obtain.

O my beloved Sita, by spending time with you and Lakshmana following the path of the virtuous with utmost restraint and by enhancing the righteousness of my race, I shall obtain great felicity.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे चतुर्नवतितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the ninetyfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
