[Sugriva narrates to Rama the reasons for his hostility with Vali and banishment from the kingdom.]

tataḥ krōdhasamāviṣṭaṅ samrabdhaṅ tamupāgatam.

ahaṅ prasādayāñcakrē bhrātaraṅ priyakāmyayā4.10.1


tataḥ then, aham I, krōdhasamāviṣṭam overpowered with anger, samrabdham agitated, upāgatam arrived, taṅ bhrātaram brother, priyakāmyayā to pacify, prasādayāñcakrē I appeased.

'I sought to appease my brother who arrived in an agitated state overpowered with anger.
diṣṭyāsi kuśalī prāptō nihataśca tvayā ripuḥ.

anāthasya hi mē nāthastvamēkō.nāthanandanaḥ4.10.2৷৷


anāthanandana compassionate to orphans, diṣṭyā providence, tvayā by you, ripuḥ enemy, nihataḥ is killed, kuśalī safely, prāptaḥ asi have returned, anāthasya to the orphan, mē me, tvam you, ēkaḥ alone, nāthaḥ are the saviour.

'By providence you have come back safe and the enemy has been killed. You are the only protector to an orphan which I am.
idaṅ bahuśalākaṅ tē pūrṇacandramivōditam.

chatraṅ savālavyajanaṅ pratīcchasva mayā dhṛtam4.10.3৷৷


tē to you, mayā by me, dhṛtam held, bahuśalākam having many ribs, uditam risen above, pūrṇacandramiva like the full Moon, savālavyajanam Yak tail-fans, idam this, chatram parasol, pratīcchasva pray accept.

'Here is the many-ribbed parasol shining like the full Moon above the horizon and the yak's tail-fan held by me.Pray accept it.
ārtaścātha biladvāri sthitassaṅvatsaraṅ nṛpa.

dṛṣṭvā.haṅ śōṇitaṅ dvāri bilāccāpi samutthitam4.10.4৷৷

śōkasaṅvignahṛdayō bhṛśaṅ vyākulitēndriyaḥ.

apidhāya biladvāraṅ śailaśṛṅgēṇa tattathā4.10.5৷৷

tasmāddēśādapākramya kiṣkindhāṅ prāviśaṅ punaḥ.


nṛpa O king!, ārtaḥ distressed, saṅvatsaram one year, biladvāri at the entrance of the cave, sthitaḥ waited, atha and then, bilāt from the cave, samutthitam flowing out, śōṇitam blood, dvāri at the entrance, dṛṣṭvā ca and seeing, śōkasaṅvignahrudayaḥ with a sunken heart, bhṛśam greatly, vyākulitēndriyaḥ senses fused, tadā then, tat that, biladvāram entrance of the cave, śailaśṛṅgēṇa with a rock, apidhāya closed, tasmāt from that place, dēśāt kingdom, apakramya retreated, punaḥ again, kiṣkindhām to Kishkinda, prāviśam entered.

'O king! I waited at the entrance of the cave for a year. As you did not come out, I felt distressed and my heart sank in great sorrow seeing blood flowing out of the cave. With my senses fused I returned to Kishkinda, closing the entrance with a rock(lest the demon should come out).
viṣādātviha māṅ dṛṣṭvā paurairmantribhirēva ca4.10.6৷৷

abhiṣiktō na kāmēna tanmētvaṅ kṣantumarhasi.


viṣādāt due to grief, iha here, mām me, dṛṣṭvā seeing, pauraiḥ by the people, mantribhirēva ca and by the ministers also, abhiṣiktaḥ consecrated, kāmēna by desire, na not, tvam you, mē my, tat that, kṣantum to excuse, arhasi ought to.

'Here I was consecrated by the people and ministers who saw me immersed in grief. It was not my desire to be coronated. Therefore, I may be forgiven.
tvamēva rājā mānārhassadā cāhaṅ yathā puram4.10.7৷৷

rājabhāvaniyōgō.yaṅ mama tvadvirahātkṛtaḥ.

sāmātyapauranagaraṅ sthitaṅ nihatakaṇṭakam4.10.8৷৷


mānārhaḥ worthy of reverence, rājā the king, tvamēva you alone are, ahaṅ ca I also, purā yathā like in earlier times, mama to me, ayam this, rājabhāvē held the state, niyōgaḥ an assignment, tvadvirahāt due to your absence, kṛtaḥ held, sāmātyapauranagaram with ministers, citizens and towns, nihatakaṇṭakam with the enemies destroyed, sthitam is stable.

'You alone are the king and worthy of reverence.I will be the same old brother carrying out my work as earlier. I held the responsibility of the state in your absence forced by the citizens and ministers. The kingdom has been kept stable with the enemies destroyed.
nyāsabhūtamidaṅ rājyaṅ tava niryātayāmyaham.

mā ca rōṣaṅ kṛthāssaumya mayi śatrunibarhaṇa4.10.9৷৷


nyāsabhūtam was in trust, idaṅ rājyam this kingdom, aham I am, tava to you, niryātayāmi I am returning, śatrunibarhaṇa a slayer of enemies!, saumya good-natured, mama at me, rōṣam anger, mā kṛthāḥ to give up

'I am handing over this kingdom which was in trust. O slayer of enemies, O good- natured one, give up your anger against me.
yācē tvāṅ śirasā rājanmayā baddhō.yamañjaliḥ.

balādasmin samāgamya mantribhiḥ puravāsibhiḥ4.10.10৷৷

rājabhāvē niyuktō.haṅ śūnyadēśajigīṣayā.


rājan O king!, śirasā head bent, tvām you, yācē I beg you, mayā by myself, ayam this, añjaliḥ folded palms, baddhaḥ bound, mantribhiḥ by ministers, puravāsibhiḥ by citizens, samāgamya having
assembled, aham I, śūnyadēśajigīṣayā kingdom without a king can be conquered, asmin in this, rājabhāvē as king, balāt with pressure, niyuktaḥ assigned.

'O king! I bow my head and beg you with folded hands. The ministers and citizens assembled and forced me to take charge, as the kingdom without a ruler was vulnerable to attack.'
snigdhamēvaṅ bruvāṇaṅ māṅ sa tu nirbhartsya vānaraḥ4.10.11৷৷

dhiktvāmiti ca mā muktvā bahu tattaduvāca ha.


saḥ vānaraḥ that monkey, ēvam thus, snigdham affectionately, bruvāṇam speaking, mām me, nirbhartsya having abused, tvām you are, dhik reproached, iti ca this way, uktvā after saying, tattat in various ways, bahu many (words), uvāca ha spoke

'Even tnough I spoke to him with affection, Vali abused me in many words, saying, 'Fie on you'.
prakṛtīśca samānīya muntriṇaścaiva sammatān4.10.12৷৷

māmāha suhṛdāṅ madhyē vākyaṅ paramagarhitam.


prakṛtīścaiva ordinary people, sammatān whom he liked, mantriṇa ścaiva and ministers, samānīya having invited, suhṛdām of friends, madhyē in the midst, mām me, paramagarhitam contemptuous, vākyam words, āha he spoke

'Having invited ordinary people and favourite ministers he condemned me in the presence of friends.
viditaṅ vō yathā rātrau māyāvī sa mahāsuraḥ4.10.13৷৷

māṅ samāhvayata krūrō yuddhākāṅkṣī sudurmatiḥ.


sudurmatiḥ wicked-minded one, mahāsuraḥ great demon, māyāvī Mayavi, kruddhaḥ angry one, yuddhākāṅkṣī wishing to tight, yathā as, rātrau In that night, mām me, samāhvayata challenged, vaḥ to
you, viditaṅ is known.

'You know very well how that wicked demon, Mayabi, that night challenged me angrily to a duel.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā nissṛtō.haṅ nṛpālayāt4.10.14৷৷

anuyātaśca māṅ tūrṇamayaṅ bhrātā sudāruṇaḥ.


tasya his, tat that, vacanam words , śrutvā after hearing, aham I, nṛpālayāt from the royal abode, niḥsṛtaḥ I came out, sudāruṇaḥ terrific, ayam this, bhrātā brother, tūrṇam quickly, mām me, anuyātaḥ followed.

'On hearing his words I came out of the royal abode quickly, followed by this wicked brother.
sa tu dṛṣṭvaiva māṅ rātrau sadvitīyaṅ mahābalaḥ4.10.15৷৷

prādravadbhayasantrastō vīkṣyāvāṅ samupāgatau.

anudrutaśca vēgēna pravivēśa mahābilam4.10.16৷৷


mahābalaḥ powerful, saḥ he, rātrau that night, sadvitīyam followed by a second person, mām me, dṛṣṭvā ēva soon after seeing that, prādravat he ran, samupāgatau both advancing towards him, āvām both of us, vīkṣya after seeing, bhayasantrastaḥ shaken with fear, vēgēna speedily, pravivēśa entered, saḥ he, mahābilam huge cave, anudruta was chased.

'The powerful demon that night saw me followed by another advancing towards him and fled out of fear. When we chased him, he entered this huge cave in great speed.
taṅ praviṣṭaṅ viditvā sughōraṅ sumahadbilam.

ayamuktō.tha mē bhrātā mayā tu krūradarśanaḥ4.10.17৷৷


sughōram dreadful, tam him, sumahat great, bilam hole, praviṣṭam entering, viditvā knowing, atha
thereafter, krūradarśanaḥ with cruel looks, ayam this, mama bhrātā my brother, mayā by me, uktaḥ has been told.

'When I saw the dreadful demon entering the great cave, I instructed this cruel brother of mine:
ahatvā nāsti mē śaktiḥ pratigantumitaḥ purīm.

biladvāri pratīkṣa tvaṅ yāvadēnaṅ nihanmyaham4.10.18৷৷


ahatvā without killing him, itaḥ from this place, purīm town, pratigantum to return, mē to me, śaktiḥ energy, nāsti is not, aham I, ēnam him, yāvat till that time, hanmi I kill and return, tvam you, biladvāri at the entrance, pratīkṣa you may wait.

'I cannot return from here without killing him. Wait at the entrance of the cave until I kill him. Look forward to my return.
sthitō.yamiti matvā tu praviṣṭō.haṅ durāsadam.

taṅ ca mē mārgamāṇasya gatassaṅvatsarastadā4.10.19৷৷


ayam this, sthitaḥ iti waiting there, matvā tu thinking like that, aham I, durāsadam formidable, praviṣṭaḥ entered, tadā then, tatra there, tam him, mārgamāṇasya in the process of searching, mē for me, saṅvatsaraḥ gataḥ one year was over.

'Presuming that Sugriva was waiting there, I entered the formidable cave. While I was searching for the demon there, one year passed.
sa tu dṛṣṭō mayā śatruranirvēdādbhayāvahaḥ.

nihataśca mayā tatra sō.surō bandhubhissaha৷৷4.10.20৷৷


bhayāvahaḥ fearful one, saḥ he, śatruḥ enemy, mayā by me, anirvēdāt without any difficulty, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen, bandhubhiḥ saha along with his relatives, tatra there, mayā by me, nihataḥ killed, ca asuraḥ that demon.

'I could find that fearful enemy there and killed him along with his relatives without any difficulty.
tasyāsyāttu pravṛttēna rudhiraughēṇa tadbilam.

pūrṇamāsīddurākrāmaṅ stanatastasya bhūtalē4.10.21৷৷


bhūtalē on the ground, stanataḥ was roaring, tasya his, āsyāt from his mouth, pravṛttēna due to emergence, rudhiraughēṇa by the flow of blood, tat bilam that cavern, pūrṇam full, durākrāmam āsīt difficult to stay.

sūdayitvā tu taṅ śatruṅ vikrāntaṅ dundubhēssutam.

niṣkrāmannēva paśyāmi bilasya pihitaṅ mukham4.10.22৷৷


dundubhēḥ Dundubhi's, sutam son, vikrāntam valiant, taṅ śatrum that enemy, sūdayitvā after vanquishing, iha here, niṣkrāmam as I returned, paśyāmi I could find, bilasya cavern, mukham entrance, pihitam was closed.

vikrōśamānasya tu mē sugrīvēti punaḥ punaḥ.

yadā prativacō nāsti tatō.haṅ bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ4.10.23৷৷


sugrīvēti saying O Sugriva! , punaḥ punaḥ again and again, vikrōśamānasya shouting in distress, mē for me, yadā when, prativacaḥ response, nāsti was not heard, tataḥ then, aham I, bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ very sad.

'When there was no response from Sugriva to my repeated call in distress I was very
sad.
pādaprahāraistu mayā bahubhistadvidāritam.

tatō.haṅ tēna niṣkramya yathā puramupāgataḥ4.10.24৷৷


mayā by me, bahubhiḥ by many, pādaprahāraiḥ kicks, vidāritam broken, tataḥ then, aham I, tēna by that, yathā as, niṣkramya after coming out, puraḥ to city, upāgataḥ arrived.

'I kicked the boulder again and again till it yielded. I came out that way and arrived at the city.
atrānēnāsmi saṅruddhō rājyaṅ prārthayatā.tmanaḥ.

sugrīvēṇa nṛśaṅsēna vismṛtya bhrātṛsauhṛdam৷৷4.10.25৷৷


ātmanaḥ my own, rājyam kingdom, prārthayatā by desiring, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, nṛśaṅsēna by the wicked one, anēna by him, bhrātṛsauhṛdam brotherly love, vismṛtya forgetting, aham I, tatra there, asmi I am, saṅrudhdaḥ I was obstructed

'I was obstructed by wicked Sugriva who forgot his brotherly love and was desiring the kingdom, which belongs to me.'
ēvamuktvā tu māṅ tatra vastrēṇaikēna vānaraḥ.

nirvāsayāmāsa tadā vālī vigatasādhvasaḥ4.10.26৷৷


vānaraḥ monkey, vālī Vali, tatra there, mām me, ēvam in that way, uktvā having spoken, vigatasādhvasaḥ unperturbed, tadā then, ēkēna with a single, vastrēṇa cloth, nirvāsayāmāsa banished me.

'When Vali, the monkey, spoke that way I remained unperturbed. He banished me with the only cloth I was wearing.
tēnāhamapaviddhaśca hṛtadāraśca rāghava.

tadbhayāccha mahīkṛtsnā krāntēyaṅ savanārṇavā4.10.27৷৷


rāghava O Rama!, tēna on account of that, apaviddhaḥ attacked, hṛtadāraśca stolen of my wife, aham I am, tadbhayāt by that fear, savanārṇavā the entire forest and oceans, kṛtsnā completely, iyaṅ mahī this earth, krāntā is covered.

'O Rama! my wife has been usurped. There is the fear of his attack. So I am roaming this entire earth, covered with forests and oceans.
ṛṣyamūkaṅ girivaraṅ bhāryāharaṇaduḥkhitaḥ.

praviṣṭō.smi durādharṣaṅ vālinaḥ kāraṇāntarē4.10.28৷৷


bhāryāharaṇaduḥkhitaḥ tormented by the abduction of my wife, kāraṇāntarē for some other reason, vālinaḥ for Vali, durādharṣam inaccessible, girivaram great mountain, ṛṣyamūkam Rishyamuka, praviṣṭaḥ asmi I have come.

'Tormented by the abduction of my wife by Vali, I came to the great Rishyamuka mountain inaccessible to Vali for some other reason.
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṅ vairānukathanaṅ mahat.

anāgasā mayā prāptaṅ vyasanaṅ paśya rāghava!4.10.29৷৷


rāghava O Rama!, ētat this, mahat long, vairānukathanam an account of the cause of our enmity, sarvam entirely, tē to you, ākhyātam said, anāgasā for no fault, mayā by me, praptam befallen, vyasanam sorrow, paśya see.

'O Rama! I have given you this long, full account of the cause of our enmity. For no fault of mine I am suffering.
vālinastu bhayārtasya sarvalōkabhayaṅkara.

kartumarhasi mē vīra prasādaṅ tasya nigrahāt4.10.30৷৷


sarvalōkabhayaṅkara vīra warrior, who can frighten the entire world, vīra hero, vālinaḥ Vali, bhayārtasya of the frightened, mē for me, prasādam grace, tasya his, nigrahāt by resisting, kartum to do, arhasi you may.

'O great warrior! you are one who can frighten the entire world! Due to the fear of Vali I seek your grace.You may resist Vali and provide me security.'
ēvamuktassa tējasvī dharmajñō dharmasaṅhitam.

vacanaṅ vaktumārēbhē sugrīvaṅ prahasanniva4.10.31৷৷


ēvam that way, uktaḥ spoken, dharmajñaḥ one who knows dharms, tējasvī glorious one, saḥ he, prahasanniva as if joking with him, sugrīvam Sugriva, dharmasaṅhitam consistent with righteousness, vacanam words, vaktum to speak, ārēbhē he started.

Having thus addressed by Sugriva the righteous and glorious Rama with a gentle smile consistent with righteousness, started speaking:
amōghāssūryasaṅkāśā mamaitē niśitā śśarāḥ.

tasminvālini durvṛttē nipatiṣyanti vēgitāḥ4.10.32৷৷


amōghāḥ unfailing, sūryasaṅkāśāḥ (bright) as the Sun, (ruṣā anvitā accompanied by anger), mamaitē released by me, niśitāḥ sharp, mē śarāḥ my arrows, durvṛttē on the evil doer, tasmin vālini on that Vali, patiṣyanti will descend.

'These my sharp, unfailing arrows, bright as the Sun, released by me out of anger will descend on the evil-doer, Vali.
yāvattaṅ nābhipaśyāmi tava bhāryāpahāriṇam.

tāvatsa jīvētpāpātmā vālī cāritradūṣakaḥ4.10.33৷৷


tava your, bhāryāpahāriṇam abducter of your wife, tam him, yāvat until, na not, abhipaśyāmi I do not see, tāvat till that time, pāpātmā sinner, cāritradūṣakaḥ violater of the moral code, saḥ vālī that Vali, jīvēt live.

'That sinful Vali who has abducted your wife and violated the moral code will live only as long I do not see him.
ātmānumānātpaśyāmi magnaṅ tvāṅ śōkasāgarē.

tvāmahaṅ tārayiṣyāmi kāmaṅ prāpsyasi puṣkalam4.10.34৷৷


tvām you, śōkasāgarē in an ocean of sorrow, magnaḥ immersed, ātmānumānāt due to my own sorrow, paśyāmi I see, tvām you, aham I, tārayiṣyāmi I will help you cross over, puṣkalam completely, kāmam desire, prāpsyasi you will fulfil.

'Inferring from my own experience, I see that you are immersed in an ocean of sorrow.I will help you cross over and fulfil your desire.'
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā harṣapauruṣavardhanam.

sugrīvaḥ paramaprītassumahadvākyamabravīt4.10.35৷৷


tasya his, harṣapauruṣavardhanam boosting his joy and vigour, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā after hearing, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, paramaprītaḥ very pleased, sumahat great, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

On hearing his words that boosted his joy and vigour, Sugriva was immensely pleased and said these warm words.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē daśamassargaḥ
Thus ends the tenth sarga of Kishkindhakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
