[Sugriva expatiates about the prowess of Vali --- narrates Dundubhi's challenge --- sage Matanga's curse on Vali --- Rama demonstrates his strength.]

rāmasya vacanaṅ śrutvā harṣapauruṣavardhanam.

sugrīvaḥ pūjayāñcakrē rāghavaṅ praśaśaṅsa ca4.11.1৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmasya Rama's, harṣapauruṣavardhanam joy and manliness increased, vacanam words, śrutvā heard, rāghavam to Rama, pūjayāñcakrē offered prayers, praśaśaṅsa ca and praised.

The words of Rama boosted Sugriva's joy and manliness. He offered him prayers and praise:
asaṅśayaṅ prajvalitaistīkṣṇairmarmātigaiśśaraiḥ.

tvaṅ dahēḥ kupitō lōkānyugānta iva bhāskaraḥ4.11.2৷৷


prajvalitaiḥ by blazing, tīkṣṇaiḥ by the sharp, marmātigaiḥ go through vital parts, śaraiḥ with arrows, kupitaḥ outraged one, tvam you, yugāntē at the end of the Yuga, bhāskaraḥ iva like the Sun, lōkān worlds, dahēḥ you many burn, asaṅśayam no doubt.

'There is no doubt that your sharp, blazing arrows will pierce through the vital parts of the body once you are angry, just as the Sun-god burns all worlds at the end of the Yuga.
vālinaḥ pauruṣaṅ yattadyacca vīryaṅ dhṛtiśca yā.

tanmamaikamanāśśrutvā vidhatsva yadanantaram4.11.3৷৷


vālinaḥ Vali's, yat such, pauruṣam manliness, tat that, yat vīryam such valour, tat that, yā dhṛtiśca courage, mama my, ēkamanāḥ concentrate, śrutvā on hearing, yat which, anantaram after that, vidhatsva do what is to be done.

samudrātpaścimātpūrvaṅ dakṣiṇādapi cōttaram.

krāmatyanuditē sūryē vālī vyapagataklamaḥ4.11.4৷৷


vālī Vali, vyapagataklamaḥ without getting tired, sūryē when the Sun, anuditē has not yet risen, paścimāt from the west, samudrāt from the ocean, pūrvam east, dakṣiṇāt from the south, uttaram north, krāmati crosses over.

'In the early hours before Sunrise Vali crosses over the oceans from the west to the east and moving from south to north (performing sandhya) without getting fatigued.
agrāṇyāruhya śailānāṅ śikharāṇi mahāntyapi.

ūrdhvamutkṣipya tarasā pratigṛhṇāti vīryavān4.11.5৷৷


vīryavān valiant , śailānām of the mountains, āgrāṇi tops, āruhya ascending, mahānti huge, śikharāṇi peaks, tarasā speedily, ūrdhvam upward, utkṣipya climbing, pratigṛhṇāti catches.

'Climbing up speedily, valiant Vali would catch the huge mountain peaks.
bahavassāravantaśca vanēṣu vividhā drumāḥ.

vālinā tarasā bhagnā balaṅ prathayatā.tmanaḥ4.11.6৷৷


ātmanaḥ his, balam strength, prathayatā exihibiting, vālinā by Vali, vanēṣu in the forests, sāravantaḥ sturdy, vividhāḥ several, bahavaḥ many, drumāḥ trees, tarasā with vigour, bhagnāḥ break

'Vali would break several sturdy trees in the forest with his vigour and speed, exhibiting his strength.
mahiṣō dundubhirnāma kailāsaśikharaprabhaḥ.

balaṅ nāgasahasrasya dhārayāmāsa vīryavān4.11.7৷৷


kailāsaśikharaprabhaḥ shining like the peak of mount Kailas, vīryavān valiant one, mahiṣaḥ mighty- buffalo, dundubhiḥ nāma by name Dundubhi, nāgasahasrasya of a thousand elephants, balam strength, dhārayāmāsa possessed.

'Massive like the shining peak of mount Kailas and valiant like the mighty-buffalo in form, Dundubhi possessed the strength of a thousand elephants.
vīryōtsēkēna duṣṭātmā varadānācca mōhitaḥ.

jagāma sumahākāya ssamudraṅ saritāṅ patim৷৷4.11.8৷৷


vīryōtsēkēna proud of valour, varadānāt by virtue of boons, mōhitaḥ deluded, duṣṭātmā wicked-self, mahākāyaḥ of huge body, saḥ he (Dundubhi), saritāṅ patim lord of rivers, samudram to ocean, jagāma went.

'Wicked Dundubhi of huge body was proud of his valour and deluded by virtue of the boons, went to the ocean, the lord of rivers.
ūrmimantamabhikramya sāgaraṅ ratnasañcayam.

mahyaṅ yuddhaṅ prayacchēti tamuvāca mahārṇavam4.11.9৷৷


ūrmimantam with waves, ratnasañcayam a hoarder of gems, sāgaram ocean, abhikramya after reaching, mahyaṅ to me, yuddham war, prayaccha give, iti thus, tam him, mahārṇavam mighty ocean, uvāca said.

'Reaching the mighty ocean, he implored the sea with (high) waves and hoards of gems for a fight.
tatassamudrō dharmātmā samutthāya mahābalaḥ.

abravīdvacanaṅ rājannasuraṅ kālacōditam4.11.10৷৷


rājan O king!, tataḥ then, dharmātmā righteous self, mahābalaḥ powerful samudraḥ ocean, samutthāya rising, kālacōditam driven to death by fate, asuram demon, vacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

'O king, then the powerful and righteous king of the ocean came out and spoke to the demon (Dundubhi) who was driven to death by fate.'
samarthō nāsmi tē dātuṅ yuddhaṅ yuddhaviśārada!.

śrūyatāṅ cābhidhāsyāmi yastē yuddhaṅ pradāsyati4.11.11৷৷


yuddhaviśārada O warrior proficient in war, tē to you, yuddham war, dātum to offer (challenge), samarthaḥ not capable, nāsmi I am not, yaḥ he who, tē to you, yuddham war, pradāsyati will give, abhidhāsyāmi I can name him, śrūyatām listen.

'You are proficient in warfare. I am not competent enough to challenge you to a duel. But I will name the one who can.
śailarājō mahāraṇyē tapasviśaraṇaṅ param.

śaṅkaraśvaśurō nāmnā himavāniti viśrutaḥ4.11.12৷৷

guhāprasravaṇōpētō bahukandaranirdaraḥ.

sa samarthastava prītimatulāṅ kartumāhavē4.11.13৷৷


param supreme, tapasviśaraṇam abode of ascetics, śaṅkaraśvaśuraḥ father-in-law of lord Siva, himavāniti Himavan, nāmnā by name, viśrutaḥ well-known, mahāprasravaṇōpētaḥ great waterfalls, bahukandaranirdaraḥ many caves and caverns, śailarājaḥ king of mountains, mahāraṇyē in the great forest, saḥ he, samarthaḥ is competent, tava to you, atulām incomparable, prītim love, kartum to do, āhavē in the war.

'Himavan, the supreme abode of ascetics is the father-in-law of Lord Siva. He is well-known as king of mountains, who has, waterfalls, caves, caverns and great
forests.He is competent to match your incomparable love for war.
taṅ bhīta iti vijñāya samudramasurōttamaḥ.

himavadvanamāgacchaccharaścāpādiva cyutaḥ4.11.14৷৷

tatastasya girēśśvētā gajēndravipralāśśilāḥ.

cikṣēpa bahudhā bhūmau dundubhirvinanāda ca4.11.15৷৷


asurōttamaḥ best of demons, dundubhiḥ Dundubhi, tam him, samudram ocean, bhītaḥ frightened, iti thus, vijñāya knowing, cāpāt from the bow, cyutaḥ released, śara iva arrow-like, himavadvanam forest of Himavan, āgamya reached, tataḥ then, tasya girēḥ of that mountain, śvētāḥ white, gajēndra (like) elephants, vipralā huge, śilāḥ rocks, bahudhā several, bhūmau on the earth, cikṣēpa threw, vinanāda roared, ca also.

'Dundubhi, the most powerful of demons, aware that the ocean is frightened of him went swiftly to Himavan like an arrow released from a bow. He raised many huge white cliffs of the size of great elephants to the ground and roared.
tataśśvētāmbudākāraḥ saumyaḥ prītikarākṛtiḥ.

himavānabravīdvākyaṅ svē ēva śikharē sthitaḥ4.11.16৷৷


tataḥ then, śvētāmbudākāraḥ in a white cloud-like form, saumyaḥ a gentle one, prītikarākṛtiḥ one who has a pleasing appearance, himavān Himavan, svē on his own, śikharē ēva on the peak, sthitaḥ he stood, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

'Then the gentle Himavan of pleasing appearance stood in the form of a white cloud on the peak and spoke:
klēṣṭumarhasi māṅ na tvaṅ dundubhē dharmavatsala!.

raṇakarmasvakuśalastapasviśaraṇaṅ hyaham4.11.17৷৷


dharmavatsala! devoted to dharma, dundubhē Dundubhi, tvam you, mām me, klēṣṭum to trouble, nārhasi it is not proper, tapasviśaraṇam the resort of ascetics, aham I am, raṇakarmasu to wage war, akuśalaḥ hi not adept

'Dundubhi, it is not proper for you to trouble me, for I am devoted to righteousness. I am the resort of ascetics and not adept in warfare'.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā girirājasya dhīmataḥ.

uvāca dundubhirvākyaṅ krōdhātsaṅraktalōcanaḥ4.11.18৷৷


dundubhiḥ Dundubhi, dhīmataḥ of the wise one, tasya girirājasya of that king of mountains, tat that, vacanam word, śrutvā after hearing, krōdhāt angrily, saṅraktalōcanaḥ with eyes turned red, vākyam these words, uvāca said.

yadi yuddhē.samarthastvaṅ madbhayādvā nirudyamaḥ.

samācakṣva pradadyānmē yō.dya yuddhaṅ yuyutsataḥ4.11.19৷৷


tvam you, yuddhē in a duel, asamarthaḥ yadi if in capable, vā or else, madbhayāt due to fear of me, nirudyamaḥ unwilling, yaḥ whosoever, yuyutsataḥ wants to fight, mē with me, yuddham duel, pradadyāt give me a challenge, samācakṣva tell me.

'If you are unable or unwilling to fight me out of fear, tell me who wants to challenge me to a duel.
himavānabravīdvākyaṅ śrutvā vākyaviśāradaḥ.

anuktapūrvaṅ dharmātmā krōdhāttamasurōttamam4.11.20৷৷


vākyaviśāradaḥ skilful in conversation, dharmātmā righteous, himavān Himavan, śrutvā on hearing, tam him, asurōttamam best of demon, krōdhāt in anger, anuktapūrvam had not spoken earlier,
vākyam such words, abravīt spoke.

'On hearing such words, which no one had spoken earlier, righteous Himavan, skilful in conversation, flew into a rage and said to Dundubhi,the best of demons:
vālī nāma mahāprājñaśśakratulya parākramaḥ.

adhyāstē vānaraśśrīmān kiṣkindhāmatulaprabhām4.11.21৷৷


mahāprājñaḥ wise one, śakraputraḥ son of Indra, pratāpavān powerful, śrīmān prosperous one, vālī nāma Vali by name, vānaraḥ monkey, atulaprabhām of incomparable glory, kiṣkindhām Kishkindha, adhyāstē residing.

'Vali, son of Indra, is a wise, powerful and prosperous monkey. He resides at Kishkinda, a city of incomparable glory.
sa samarthō mahāprājñastava yuddhaviśāradaḥ.

dvandvayuddhaṅ mahaddātuṅ namucēriva vāsavaḥ4.11.22৷৷


mahāprājñaḥ wise, yuddhaviśāradaḥ expert in warfare, saḥ he, vāsavaḥ Indra, namucēriva like Namuchi, tava to you, mahat great, dvandvayuddham duel, dātum to give (challenge), samarthaḥ competent.

'Vali is profoundly wise, an expert in warfare. He is capable of challenging you to a duel like Indra to Namuchi.
taṅ śīghramabhigaccha tvaṅ yadi yuddhamihēcchasi.

sa hi durdharṣaṇō nityaṅ śūrassamarakarmaṇi4.11.23৷৷


iha now, yuddham fight, icchasi yadi if you want to fight, tvam you, śīghram quickly, tam him, abhigaccha go now, śūraḥ heroic, saḥ he, nityam ever, samarakarmaṇi in warfare, durdharṣaṇaḥ hi difficult to combat.

'If you wish to fight, go to him quickly.He is ever heroic and difficult to combat.
śrutvā himavatō vākyaṅ kōdhāviṣṭassa dundubhiḥ.

jagāma tāṅ purīṅ tasya kiṣkindhāṅ vālinastadā4.11.24৷৷


tadā then, saḥ dundubhiḥ that Dundubhi, himavataḥ Himavan's, vākyam words, śrutvā on hearing, kōpāviṣṭaḥ seized with anger, tasya his vālinaḥ Vali's, purīm city, kiṣkindhām Kishkinda, jagāma went.

'Having heard Himavan, Dundubhi, seized with anger, went to Kishkindha, the city of Vali.
dhārayanmāhiṣaṅ rūpaṅ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgō bhayāvahaḥ.

prāvṛṣīva mahāmēghastōyapūrṇō nabhassthalē4.11.25৷৷

tatastu dvāramāgamya kiṣkindhāyā mahābalaḥ.

nanarda kampayanbhūmiṅ dundubhirdundubhiryathā4.11.26৷৷


mahābalaḥ mighty, dundubhiḥ Dundubhi, māhiṣam buffalo, rūpam form, dhārayan assuming, tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaḥ pointed horns, bhayāvahaḥ frightening, prāvṛṣi in rainy season, nabhastalē in the sky, tōyapūrṇaḥ laden with water, mahāmēgha iva like a huge cloud, kiṣkindhāyāḥ Kishkinda's, dvāram entrance, āgamya reached, bhūmim earth, kampayan shaking, dundubhiryathā like Dundubhi a war-drum, nanarda roared.

'Mighty Dundubhi assuming the form of a frightening buffalo with pointed horns looking like a huge, dark rain-cloud in the sky in monsoon marched to the entrance of Kishkinda and roared like a war-drum as if shaking the earth.
samīpasthāndrumānbhañjanvasudhāṅ dārayankhuraiḥ.

viṣāṇēnōllikhan darpāttaddvāraṅ dviradō yathā4.11.27৷৷


samīpasthān nearby, drumān trees, bhañjan felling, vasudhām earth, khuraiḥ with hoofs, dārayan breaking, darpāt arrogantly, viṣāṇēna by the horn, tadvāram that entrance, dviradō yathā like an
elephant, ullikhan digging.

'Dundubhi felled the trees nearby, rent the earth with its hoofs, scratched the entrance gate of the city as an elephant would do with its horns in arrogance.
antaḥpuragatō vālī śrutvā śabdamamarṣaṇaḥ.

niṣpapāta saha strībhistārābhiriva candramāḥ4.11.28৷৷


antaḥpuragataḥ in the harem, vālī Vali, śabdam sound, śrutvā hearing, amarṣaṇaḥ intolereable, tārābhiḥ stars also, candramāḥ Moon, strībhiḥ with women, niṣpapāta jumped out.

'Unable to tolerate the sound, Vali jumped out of the harem along with the women like the Moon with stars.
mitaṅ vyaktākṣarapadaṅ tamuvācātha dundubhim.

harīṇāmīśvarō vālī sarvēṣāṅ vanacāriṇām4.11.29৷৷


vanacāriṇām forest-rangers, sarvēṣām for all, harīṇām of monkeys, īśvaraḥ king, (saḥ vālī that Vali), dundubhim to Dundubhi, vyaktākṣarapadam a brief statement, mitam in limited words, uvāca said.

'Vali, king of the monkeys who roam the forest, saw Dundubhi and addressed, but briefly:
kimarthaṅ nagaradvāramidaṅ rudhdvā vinardasi.

dundubhē viditō mē.si rakṣaprāṇānmahābala!4.11.30৷৷


dundubhē O Dundubhi!, idam this, nagaradvāram entrance of the city, rudhdvā blocking, kimartham for what reason, vinardasi are you roaring, mē to me, viditaḥ known, asi you are,mahābala O powerful one!, prāṇān life, rakṣa you may protect.

'O Dundubhi! why are you roaring, blocking the entrance of the city? I know you are
powerful. Go and save your life.'
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā vānarēndrasya dhīmataḥ.

uvāca dundubhirvākyaṅ rōṣātsaṅraktalōcanaḥ4.11.31৷৷


dhīmataḥ wise, tasya his, vānarēndrasya of the king of monkeys, tat that, vacanam words, śrutvā hearing, dundubhiḥ Dundubhi, rōṣāt angrily, saṅraktalōcanaḥ eyes turned red, vākyam words, uvāca said

'Dundubhi whose eyes turned red in anger when he heard the words of Vali ,the wise king of the monkeys, said:
na tvaṅ strīsannidhau vīra! vacanaṅ vaktumarhasi.

mama yuddhaṅ prayacchādya tatō jñāsyāmi tē balam4.11.32৷৷


vīra hero, tvam you, strīsannidhau in the presence of women, vacanam words, vaktum to speak, nārhasi not proper for you, adya to day, mama to me, yuddham war, prayaccha you may give, tataḥ then, tē your, balam strength, jñāsyāmi I will let you know.

'O hero! speaking such words in the presence of women is not proper. Come to me for a combat and I will let you know your strength.
athavā dhārayiṣyāmi krōdhamadya niśāmimām.

gṛhyatāmudayassvairaṅ kāmabhōgēṣu vānara4.11.33৷৷


vānara O monkey!, athavā or else, adya now, imām this, niśām night, krōdham anger, dhārayiṣyāmi I will control, svairam freedom, kāmabhōgēṣu for your sensual pleasures, udayaḥ morning, gṛhyatām I will give you time.

'O monkey! I will restrain my anger tonight and give you time for your indulgence in sensual pleasures till morning.
dīyatāṅ sampradānaṅ ca pariṣvajya ca vānarān.

sarvaśākhāmṛgēndra stvaṅ saṅsādaya suhṛjjanān4.11.34৷৷


vānarān of monkeys, pariṣvajya embracing, sampradānam a gift, dīyatām may give, sarvaśākhāmṛgēndraḥ king of all monkeys, tvam you, suhṛjjanam with dear friends, saṅsādaya spend

'O king of monkeys, hug them and give them any gift you want. Spend the night with your dear ones.
sudṛṣṭāṅ kuru kiṣkindhāṅ kuruṣvātmasamaṅ purē.

krīḍasva ca saha strībhirahaṅ tē darpanāśanaḥ4.11.35৷৷


kiṣkindhām Kishkindha, sudṛṣṭām give a good look, purē the city, ātmasamam some one equal to you, kuruṣva assign kingship, strībhiḥ with women, saha along with, krīḍasva ca and sport, aham am, tē to you, darpanāśanaḥ a destroyer of arrogance.

'Have a good look a Kishkinda. Assign some one like you kingship. Sport freely with women and come, I shall destroy your arrogance.
yō hi mattaṅ pramattaṅ vā suptaṅ vā rahitaṅ bhṛśam.

hanyātsa bhrūṇahā lōkē tvadvidhaṅ madamōhitam4.11.36৷৷


yaḥ whoever, mattam drunk, pramattaṅ vā or heedless, suptaṅ vā or sleeping, rahitam or without weapons, bhṛśam greatly, madamōhitam stupified by lust, hanyāt if killed, saḥ he, lōkē in the world, bhrūṇahā hi is a killer of foetus in the womb.

'Whoever kills a person, who is drunk or is heedless or is asleep or without weapons or stupified by lust in this world, is equal to a killer of a foetus in the womb.'
sa prahasyābravīnmandaṅ krōdhāttamasurōttamam.

visṛjya tāḥ striyassarvāstārāprabhṛtikāstadā4.11.37৷৷


tadā then, saḥ he, prahasya laughing, tārāprabhṛtikāḥ Tara and others, tāḥ those, sarvāḥ all, striyaḥ women, visṛjya having sent away, mandam slowly, tam him, asurōttamam best of demons, krōdhāt angrily, abravīt said.

'Then, Vali sent away Tara and all other women slowly and replied angrily to the foolish demon with a mischievous smile:
mattō.yamiti mā maṅsthā yadyabhītō.si saṅyugē.

madō.yaṅ samprahārē.sminvīrapānaṅ samarthyatām4.11.38৷৷


ayam this, mattaḥ a drunken person, iti thus, mā maṅsthāḥ do not think, saṅyugē in the combat, abhītaḥ not afraid, asi yadi if you are, ayam this, madaḥ drunkeness, asmin samprahārē in striking you, vīrapānam warrior's drink (sharpening a warrior's skill), samarthyatām consider.

'Do not consider me drunken. This drink will serve as a warrior's drink in the combat. Be ready, if you are not afraid of a combat.'
tamēvamuktvā saṅkṛddhō mālāmutkṣipya kāñcanīm.

pitrā dattāṅ mahēndrēṇa yuddhāya vyavatiṣṭhata4.11.39৷৷


tam him, ēvam that way, uktvā having spoken, saṅkṛddhaḥ angry, pitrā by his father, mahēndrēṇa by Indra, dattām gifted, kāñcanīm golden, mālām garland, utkṣipya removed, yuddhāya for the combat, vyavatiṣṭhata stood ready

'Having addressed thus in a rage, Vali removed the golden garland gifted by Indra, his father, and stood ready for the combat.
viṣāṇayōrgṛhītvā taṅ dundubhiṅ girisannibham.

āvidhyata tadā vālī vinadankapikuñjaraḥ4.11.40৷৷


tadā then, kapikuñjaraḥ elephant-like monkey, vālī Vali, girisannibham resembling a mountain, tam him, dundubhim Dundubhi, viṣāṇayōḥ by horns, gṛhītvā held, vinadan roaring loudly, āvidhyata struck down.

'Vali, the elephant-like monkey then held the mountain-like Dundubhi by the horns and struck him down, roaring loudly.
vālī vyāpātayāñcakrē nanarda ca mahāsvanam.

śrōtrābhyāmatha raktaṅ tu tasya susrāva pātyataḥ4.11.41৷৷


vālī Vali, vyāpādayāñcakrē whirled round, mahāsvanam great sound, nanarda ca roared, atha then, pātyataḥ down, tasya his, śrōtrābhyām from the ears, raktam blood, susrāva flowed.

'Vali whirled him round and round and threw him down-roaring. Blood flowed from Dundubhi's ears.
tayōstu krōdhasaṅrambhātparasparajayaiṣiṇōḥ.

yuddhaṅ samabhavadghōraṅ dundubhērvānarasyaca4.11.42৷৷


krōdhasaṅrambhāt highly agitated in anger, parasparajayaiṣiṇōḥ of both trying to win over the other, tayōḥ of both, dundubhēḥ for Dundubhi, vānarasya ca and of the monkey, ghōram terrific, yuddham combat, samabhavat took place.

'Each one of them was highly agitated and angry trying to win over the other. A terrific fight took place between Dundubhi and Vali.
ayuddhyata tadā vālī śakratulyaparākramaḥ.

muṣṭibhirjānubhiścaiva śilābhiḥ pādapaistathā4.11.43৷৷


tadā then, śakratulyaparākramaḥ equal to Indra in prowess, vālī Vali, muṣṭibhiḥ with fists, jānubhiḥ with knees, ca ēva also, śilābhiḥ with rocks, tathā so also, pādapaiḥ with trees, ayudhyata fought.

'Then Vali who was equal to Indra in prowess fought, hitting him with fists, knees, rocks and trees.
parasparaṅ ghnatō statra vānarāsurayōstadā.

āsīdasurō yuddhē śakrasūnurvyavardhata4.11.44৷৷


tadā then, tatra there, vānarāsurayōḥ of monkey and demon, parasparam one to one, ghnatōḥ pouncing on the other, yuddhē in fight, asuraḥ demon, hīnaḥ reduced, āsīda become, śakrasūnuḥ son of Indra, vyavardhata grew (in strength and spirit).

'Then as the monkey and demon fought pouncing on each other, the prowess of Dundubhi got diminished and that of Vali, the son of Indra, increased.
vyāpāravīryadhairyaiśca parikṣīṇaṅ parākramaiḥ.

taṅ tu dundubhimudyamya dharaṇyāmabhyapātayat৷৷4.11.45৷৷

yuddhē prāṇaharē tasminniṣpiṣṭō dundubhistadā.

papāta ca mahākāyaḥ kṣitau pañcatvamāgataḥ4.11.46৷৷


vyāpāravīryadhairyai in effort, strength and courage, parākramaiḥ in prowess as well, parikṣīṇaṅ deterioration, tam Vali, dundubhim Dundubhi, udyamya having lifted, dharaṇyām on the ground, abhyapātayat hit down, tadā then, prāṇaharē in the deadly, tasmin in that, yuddhē fight, dundubhiḥ Dundubhi, niṣpiṣṭa: crushed, pātayataḥ thrown down, tasya his, mahākāyaḥ of huge body, pañcatvam resolved into the five elements (dead), āgataḥ go, kṣitau on the ground, papāta fell down.

In the fight, Dundubhi fell down, with his strength, courage and prowess dwindled. Vali lifted his huge body and dashed it down on the ground. The body of Dundubhi dissolved into the five elements.
taṅ tōlayitvā bāhubhyāṅ gatasattvamacētanam.

cikṣēpa balavānvālī vēgēnaikēna yōjanam4.11.47৷৷


balavān powerful, vālī Vali, gatasattvam life drained, acētanam lost consciousness, tam him, bāhubhyām with both shoulders, tōlayitvā after lifting, ēkēna in one piece, vēgēna with speed, yōjanam distance of a yojana (eight miles), cikṣēpa hurled.

'Mighty Vali lifted on both shoulders the insensate body drained of life and hurled it speedily to a distance of a yojana.
tasya vēgapraviddhasya vaktrātkṣatajabindavaḥ.

prapēturmārutōtkṣiptā mataṅgapyāśramaṅ prati4.11.48৷৷


vēgapraviddhasya flung, tasya his, vaktrāt from the mouth, kṣatajabindavaḥ drops of blood, mārutōtkṣiptāḥ scattered by the wind, mataṅgasya Matanga's, āśramaṅ prati at the hermitage of, prapētuḥ fell.

'Scattered by the wind, drops of blood fell at the hermitage of Matanga from the mouth of the deadbody flung.
tāndṛṣṭvā patitāṅstasya muniśśōṇitavipruṣaḥ.

kruddhastatra mahābhāgaścintayāmāsa kōnvayam4.11.49৷৷


mahābhāgaḥ venerable one, muniḥ sage, tatra there, patitān fallen, śōṇitavipruṣaḥ drops of blood, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, tasya his, kruddhaḥ became angry, ayam this, kō nu who can he be, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

'The venerable sage became furious to see drops of blood fallen there. He started thinking who could he be?
yēnāhaṅ sahasā spṛṣṭaśśōṇitēna durātmanā.

kō.yaṅ durātmā durbhudghirakṛtātmā ca bāliśaḥ4.11.50৷৷


durātmanā wicked self, yēna by whom, aham I, sahasā instantly, śōṇitēna with blood, spṛṣṭaḥ
touched, durātmā a villain, durbhuddhi: evil-minded, ayam he, bāliśaḥ a petty man, kaḥ who?

'Who is that petty, wicked, evil- minded one who caused the drops of blood to touch (fall on) me suddenly?
ityuktvā.tha viniṣkramya dadarśa munisattamaḥ.

mahiṣaṅ parvatākāraṅ gatāsuṅ patitaṅ bhuvi4.11.51৷৷


saḥ he, munisattamaḥ venerable sage, iti thus, uktvā having said, viniṣkramya having come out, gatāsum a dead one, bhuvi on the floor, patitam fallen, parvatākāram with a mountaneous form, mahiṣam buffalo, dadṛśē saw.

'The venerable sage came out of the hermitage and saw a mountaneous buffalo fallen dead on the floor.
sa tu vijñāya tapasā vānarēṇa kṛtaṅ hi tat.

utsasarja mahāśāpaṅ kṣēptāraṅ vālinaṅ prati4.11.52৷৷


saḥ he, tat that, vānarēṇa by the monkey, kṛtam done, tapasā by ascetic vision, vijñāya having known, kṣēptāram who hurled, vālinaṅ prati at that Vali, mahāśāpam great curse, utsasarja pronounced.

'Having known through his ascetic vision that it was the act of a monkey, he pronounced a curse on Vali who had hurled (the body):
iha tēnāpravēṣṭavyaṅ praviṣṭasya vadhō bhavēt.

vanaṅ matsaṅśrayaṅ yēna dūṣitaṅ rudhirasravaiḥ4.11.53৷৷


matsaṅśrayam under my protection, vanam forest, yēna by whom, rudhirasravaiḥ with drops of blood, dūṣitam is violated, tēna by him, iha here, na pravēṣṭavyam should not enter, praviṣṭasya of him who enters, vadhaḥ death, bhavēt will take place.

'Whoever has desecrated this forest, protected by me, with drops of blood is forbidden to enter this place. Once he does it, he will die.
sambhagnāḥ pādapāścaimēkṣipatēhāsurīṅ tanum.

samantādādyōjanaṅ pūrṇamāśramaṅ māmakaṅ yadi4.11.54৷৷

āgamiṣyati durbuddhirvyaktaṅ sa na bhaviṣyati.


āsurīm demon's, tanum body, kṣipatā hurled, imē those, pādapāśca trees also, sambhagnāḥ are broken, samantāt all over, pūrṇam entire, yōjanam yojana, māmakam mine, āśramam hermitage, āgamiṣyati if he comes, durbuddhiḥ wicked one, saḥ he, na bhaviṣyati will not survive.

'Whoever has broken the trees all over this forest and has thrown the demon's body will not survive if he enters within a radius of one yojana of my hermitage.
yē cāpi sacivāḥ stasya saṅśritā māmakaṅ vanam4.11.55৷৷

na ca tairiha vastavyaṅ śrutvā yāntu yathāsukham.


māmakam my, vanam forest, saṅśritāḥ taking refuge, yē (kēcit) indeed, asya sacivāḥ his counsellors, taiḥ ca by them also, iha here, na vastavyam should not stay, śrutvā on hearing, yathāsukham safely, yāntu depart.

'Indeed his counsellors who are here must leave this forest. Let them depart safely.
yadi tē.pī ha tiṣṭhanti śapiṣyē tānapi dhruvam4.11.56৷৷

vanē.sminmāmakē nityaṅ putravatparirakṣitē.

patrāṅkuravināśāya phalamūlābhavāya ca4.11.57৷৷


nityam always, putravat like a son, parirakṣitē protected, māmakē my, asmin vanē in this forest, tē.pi they also, patrāṅkuravināśāya for destroying shoots, phalamūlābhavāya ca and for the loss of fruits and roots etc, tiṣṭhanti yadi if they stay back, tānapi them also, dhruvam certainly, śapiṣyē I
will curse.

'If the monkeys stay back to destroy the leaves and shoots and plunder the fruits and roots of this forest which I have protected just like my son will also certainly invite my curse.
divasaścāsya maryādā yaṅ draṣṭā śvō.smi vānaram.

bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi sa vai śailō bhaviṣyati4.11.58৷৷


asya for him, divasaḥ one day, maryādā time limit, śvaḥ tomorrow, yam whosoever, vānaram monkey, draṣṭāsmi I will see, saḥ he, bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi for many thousands of years, śailaḥ mountain, bhaviṣyati will become.

'I give one day's time for the monkeys (to leave). Whomsoever, I see tomorrow will get transformed into a mountain for many thousands of years'
tatastē vānarāśśrutvā giraṅ munisamīritām.

niścakramurvanāttasmāttāndṛṣṭvā vālirabravīt4.11.59৷৷


tataḥ then, tē those, vānarāḥ monkeys, munisamīritām spoken by the sage, giram word, śrutvā after hearing, tasmāt vanāt from that forest, niścakramuḥ went away, tān the, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, vāliḥ Vali, abravīt said.

'The monkeys fled on hearing the words spoken by the sage. Said Vali:
kiṅ bhavantassamastāśca mataṅgavanavāsinaḥ.

matsamīpamanuprāptā api svasti vanaukasām4.11.60৷৷


mataṅgavanavāsinaḥ residents of the groves of Matanga, bhavantaḥ you, samastāḥ all, kim why, matsamīpam to me, anuprāptāḥ came here, vanaukasām for all the monkeys, api svasti hope all are safe.

'Why have you, residents of the groves of Matanga, come to me? Hope all are safe!'
tatastē kāraṇaṅ sarvaṅ tadā śāpaṅ ca vālinaḥ.

śaśaṅsurvānarāssarvē vālinē hēmamālinē4.11.61৷৷


tataḥ then, sarvē all, tē vānarāḥ those monkeys, sarvam everything, kāraṇam reason, tadā then, vālinaḥ of Vali, śāpaṅ ca curse also, hēmamālinē to him wearing golden necklace, vālinē to Vali, śaśaṅsuḥ narrated.

'Then all the monkeys collected together and narrated everything about the curse given to Vali , adorned with a golden chain(on his neck).
ētacchrutvā tadā vālī vacanaṅ vānarēritam.

sa maharṣiṅtadā.sādya yācatē sma kṛtāñjaliḥ4.11.62৷৷


tadā then, saḥ vālī that Vali, vānarēritam spoken by monkeys, ētat all that, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded hands, maharṣim to the sage, (sam) āsādya having approached, yācatē sma begged.

'On hearing the monkeys, Vali went to the sage and begged forgiveness with folded hands.
maharṣistamanādṛtya pravivēśāśramaṅ tadā.

śāpadhāraṇabhītastu vālī vihvalatāṅ gataḥ4.11.63৷৷


maharṣiḥ great sage, tam him, anādṛtya without obliging, āśramaṅ to the hermitage, tadā then, pravivēśa entered, vālī Vali, śāpadhāraṇabhītaḥ with the fear of hearing the curse, vihvalatām agrieved, gataḥ became.

'The sage went into the hermitage without obliging Vali who became apprehensive of the curse of the sage.
tataśśāpabhayādbhīta ṛśyamūkaṅ mahāgirim.

pravēṣṭuṅ nēcchati harirdraṣṭuṅ vāpi narēśvara!4.11.64৷৷


narēśvara! O Lord Rama, tataḥ then onwards, hariḥ monkeys, śāpabhayāt for fear of the curse, bhītaḥ frightened, mahāgirim great mountain, ṛṣyamūkam Rishyamuka, pravēṣṭum to enter, draṣṭuṅ vāpi even to see, nēcchati does not like.

'O Lord Rama! because of the fear of the curse, Vali will not enter the great Rishyamuka mountain nor will he like to see it.
tasyāpravēśaṅ jñātvā.hamidaṅ rāma! mahāvanam.

vicarāmi sahāmātyō viṣādēna vivarjitaḥ4.11.65৷৷


rāma! O Rama!, aham I, tasya his, apravēśam entry prohibited, jñātvā after knowing, viṣādēna apprehension, vivarjitaḥ without, sahāmātyaḥ accompanied by ministers, idam this, mahāvanam great forest, vicarāmi I am roaming about.

'O Rama! aware of the prohibition of Vali from entering the place, I roam about this great forest accompanied by my ministers without any apprehension.
ēṣō.sthinicayastasya dundubhēssamprakāśatē.

vīryōtsēkānnirastasya girikūṭōpamō mahān4.11.66৷৷


vīryōtsēkāt with pride of prowess, nirastasya thrown away, tasya dundubhēḥ Dundubhi's, girikūṭōpamō as the mountain peak, mahān huge, ēṣaḥ this, asthinicayaḥ heap of bones, samprakāśatē is shining

'Hurled with the pride of his(Vali's) prowess is this heap of bones of Dundubhi here, which shines like a huge mountain peak.
imē ca vipulāssālāssapta śākhāvalambinaḥ.

yatraikaṅ ghaṭatē vālī niṣpatrayitumōjasā4.11.67৷৷


śākhāvalambinaḥ branches overlapping one another, imē these, sapta seven, vipulāḥ sturdy, sālāḥ Sala trees, yatra there, ēkam one, vālī Vali, ōjasā his own, niṣpatrayitum to remove its leaves, ghaṭatē he is competent.

'Look at these seven sturdy Sala trees with branches of one overlapping the other. Vali was able to remove all the leaves of one Sala tree with just one arrow.
ētadasyāsamaṅ vīryaṅ mayā rāma! prakīrtitam.

kathaṅ taṅ vālinaṅ hantuṅ samarē śakṣyasē nṛpa!4.11.68৷৷


rāma O Rama!, asya his, asamam unequalled, ētat this, vīryam strength, prakīrtitam is narrated, nṛpa king, samarē in a combat, taṅ vālinam that Vali's, hantum to kill, katham how is it, śakṣyasē it is possible for you?

'O Rama! Vali's strength and fame related by me is unequalled. O king! how is it possible for you to kill him in a combat?'
tathā bruvāṇaṅ sugrīvaṅ prahasan lakṣmaṇō.bravīt.

kasminkarmaṇi nirvṛttē śraddadhyā vālinō vadham4.11.69৷৷


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tathā that way, bruvāṇam while he spoke, sugrīvam to Sugriva, prahasan with a smile, abravīt said, kasmin in which, karmaṇi in action, nivṛttē when carried out, vālinaḥ Vali's, vadham killing, śraddadhyāḥ trust

Smiling, Lakshmana asked Sugriva, 'By what action will you trust?. By the fulfilment of which task (by Rama) will you have faith?'
tamuvācātha sugrīvassapta sālānimānpurā.

ēvamēkaikaśō vālī vivyāthātha sa cāsakṛt. 4.11.70৷৷


atha then, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, tam him, uvāca said, purā earlier, saḥ vālī that Vali, imān these, saptasālān seven sala trees, ēvam in this way, ēkaikaśaḥ one after the other, atha then, asakṛt several times, vivyādha struck.

Then Sugriva told Lakshmana that earlier Vali had split through these seven Sala trees one after the other, several times.
rāmō.pidārayēdēṣāṅ bāṇēnaikēna ca drumam.

vālinaṅ nihataṅ manyē dṛṣṭvā rāmasya vikramam4.11.71৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, api also, ēṣām these, drumam trees, ēkēna with one, bāṇēna with arrow, dārayēt pierce through(split), rāmasya Rama's, vikramam prowess, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, vālinam Vali, nihatam killing, manyē I think, api also.

'If I see Rama splitting these trees with one arrow, I will believe he can kill Vali with his prowess.
hatasya mahiṣasyāsthi pādēnaikēna lakṣmaṇa!.

udyamyātha prakṣipēccēttarasā dvē dhanuśśatē4.11.72৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, hatasya of the dead, mahiṣasya buffalo's, asthi skeleton, ēkēna by one, pādēna by the foot, udyamya lifted, tarasā with his strength, dvēdhanuḥ śatē a distance of eight hundred hands (distance of two hundred bows), prakṣipēccāpi if he can also hurl.

'O Lakshmana! and if Rama can also lift the dead buffalo's (Dundubhi's) skeleton and hurl it to a distance of two hundred bows with one of his feet.
ēvamuktvā tu sugrīvō rāmaṅ raktāntalōcanam.

dhyātvā muhūrtaṅ kākutsthaṅ punarēva vacō.bravīt4.11.73৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, raktāntalōcanam with reddened eyes, rāmam Rama, ēvam thus, uktvā having
spoken, muhūrtam for a moment after, dhyātvā thinking, kākutstham Rama, punarēva again, vacaḥ these words, abravīt said.

Having said this and thinking for a moment, Sugriva again said to the heroic Rama whose eyes had turned red.
śūraśca śūraghātī ca prakhyātabalapauruṣaḥ.

balavānvānarō vālī saṅyugēṣvaparājitaḥ4.11.74৷৷


śūraśca hero, śūraghātī ca killer of heroes, prakhyātabalapauruṣaḥ well-known for prowess and valour, balavān powerful, vānaraḥ vālī monkey Vali, saṅyugēṣu in combat, aparājitaḥ unconquered.

'Powerful Vali is valiant and has killed brave fighters. He is well-known for his prowess and valour. He has not faced defeat in war.
dṛśyantē cāsya karmāṇi duṣkarāṇi surairapi.

yāni sañcintya bhītō.hamṛśyamūkaṅ samāśritaḥ4.11.75৷৷


surairapi even by gods, duṣkarāṇi difficult, tasya his, karmāṇi tasks, dṛśyantē are seen(all over), yāni all those, sañcintya thinking of, bhītaḥ fear, aham I, ṛṣyamūkam at Rishyamuka, upāśritaḥ I have taken refuge.

'Even gods cannot do what he has done. Thinking of all this and being afraid of him, I have taken refuge at Rishyamuka.
tamajayyamadhṛṣyaṅ ca vānarēndramamarṣaṇam.

vicintayanna muñcāmi ṛśyamūkamahanvimam4.11.76৷৷


tam him, vānarēndram lord of monkeys, ajayyam invincible, adhṛṣyam one who can not be overpowered, amarṣaṇam indignant, vicintayan while thinking over, aham I, ṛṣyamūkam Rishyamuka, na muñcāmi I have not left, iyama this.

'Thinking that this indignant, invincible lord of the monkeys, cannot be overpowered, I have not stepped out of Rishyamuka.
udvignaśśaṅkitaścāpi vicarāmi mahāvanē.

anuraktaiḥ sahāmātyairhanumatpramukhairvaraiḥ4.11.77৷৷


(aham I), udvignaḥ agitated, śaṅkitaḥ frightened, anuraktaiḥ who are devoted to me, varaiḥ excellent, hanumatpramukhaiḥ by Hanuman and others, amātyaiḥ with ministers, saha along with, mahāvanē in this great forest, vicarāmi I am roaming.

upalabdhaṅ ca mē ślāghyaṅ sanmitraṅ mitravatsala.

tvāmahaṅ puruṣavyāghra! himavantamivāśritaḥ4.11.78৷৷


ślāghyam praiseworthy, sanmitram a good friend, mē to me, upalabdham Is obtained, mitravatsala O loyal to friends, puruṣavyāghra tiger among men, aham I am, himavantamiva like the Himalaya, tvām you, āśritaḥ seek your protection.

'I have discovered in you a faithful friend. O tiger among men, O venerable one, you are to me like the Himalayas.
kiṅ tu tasya balajñō.haṅ durbhrāturbalaśālinaḥ.

apratyakṣaṅ tu mē vīryaṅ samarē tava rāghava4.11.79৷৷


kiṅ tu but, aham I, balaśālinaḥ mighty, durbhrātuḥ bad brother's, tasya his, balajñaḥ know his strength, rāghava Rama, samarē in war, tava your, vīryaṅ tu power also, mē I, apratyakṣam not see.

'What to do? I know the strength of my mighty bad brother. But so far I have not seen your power in a battle.
na khalvahaṅ tvāṅ tulayē nāvamanyē na bhīṣayē.

karmabhistasya bhīmaistu kātaryaṅ janitaṅ mama4.11.80৷৷


aham I am, tvām your, na khalu tulayē indeed do not compare, nāvamanyē I do not insult you, na bhīṣayē not to scare , tasya his, bhīmaiḥ by dreadful, karmabhiḥ by his actions, mama in me, kātaryam cowardice, janitam is created.

'The dreadful acts of Vali have made me feel timid. This is not to compare you with him or your strength with his or insult you and scare you.
kāmaṅ rāghava! tē vāṇī pramāṇaṅ dhairyamākṛtiḥ.

sūcayanti paraṅ tējō bhasmacchannamivānalam4.11.81৷৷


rāghava Rama, tē you, vāṇī word, pramāṇam evidence, dhairyam courage, ākṛtiḥ appearance, bhasmacchannam covered with ashes, ānalam iva like fire, param supreme, tējaḥ strength, sūcayanti indicate, kāmam no doubt.

'Rama ! your word and your courage indicate your supreme strength which is like fire covered with ashes.'
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ.

smitapūrvamathō rāmaḥ pratyuvāca hariṅ prabhuḥ4.11.82৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, mahātmanaḥ great soul, tasya sugrīvasya that Sugriva's, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā having heard, atha then, hariṅ prati seeing Sugriva, smitapūrvam smiling gently, pratyuvāca replied.

Having heard the great Sugriva, Rama replied with a gentle smile:
yadi na pratyayō.smāsu vikramē tava vānara!.

pratyayaṅ samarē ślāghyamahamutpādayāmi tē4.11.83৷৷


vānara! monkey, vikramē in valour, asmāsu in us, tava to you, pratyayaḥ faith, na yadi if not, aham I, samarē in combat, ślāghyam praiseworthy, pratyayam confidence, tē to you, utpādayāmi create.

'If you have no confidence in my strength in fight, O monkey, I will create it in you so much so that you will admire it.'
ēvamuktvā tu sugrīvaṅ sāntvaṅ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ.

rāghavō dundubhēḥ kāyaṅ pādāṅguṣṭhēna līlayā4.11.84৷৷

tōlayitvā mahābāhuścikṣēpa daśayōjanam.

asurasya tanuṅ śuṣkaṅ pādāṅguṣṭhēna vīryavān4.11.85৷৷


lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ Lakshmana's elder brother, mahābāhuḥ long-armed one, vīryavān mighty, rāghavaḥ Rama, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, sugrīvam to Sugriva, sāntvaṅ In a pleasing way, dundubhēḥ Dundubhi's, kāyam body, līlayā easily, pādāṅguṣṭhēna with the toe, tōlayitvā lifting, asurasya demon's, śuṣkām dried, tanum body, daśayōjanam ten yojanas, cikṣēpa flung

Rama,the mighty elder brother of Lakshmana, having said so to Sugriva in a pleasing manner, lifted the dried body of Dundubhi easily with his toe, shook it and flung it with ease to a distance of ten yojanas.
kṣiptaṅ dṛṣṭvā tataḥ kāyaṅ sugrīvaḥ punarabravīt.

lakṣmaṇasyāgratō rāmamidaṅ vacanamarthavat4.11.86৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, kṣiptam the thrown, kāyam body, dṛṣṭvā seeing, tataḥ then, punaḥ again, abravīt said, arthavat meaningful, idam these, vacanam words, abravīt said, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, agrataḥ In the presence.

Having seen Rama flinging the body, Sugriva said to him again in the presence of Lakshmana-meaningfully:
ārdrassamāṅsaḥ pratyagraḥ kṣiptaḥ kāyaḥ purā sakhē!4.11.87৷৷

laghussamprati nirmāṅsa stṛṇabhūtaśca rāghava.

pariśrāntēna mattēna bhrātrā mē vālinā tadā4.11.88৷৷

kṣiptamēvaṅ praharṣēṇa bhavatā raghunandana!.


sakhē friend!, tadā that time, pariśrāntēna by the tired, mattēna by the intoxicated, mē bhrātrā by my brother, vālinā by Vali, purā earlier, ārdraḥ wet, samāṅsaḥ with flesh, pratyagraḥ fresh, kāyaḥ body, kṣiptaḥ flung, raghunandana O delight of the Raghu race!, rāghava Raghava!, samprati now, laghuḥ light, nirmāṅsaḥ without flesh, tṛṇabhūtaśca like a bunch of grass, praharṣēṇa playfully, bhavatā by you, ēvam this, kṣiptam flung.

'O friend, when Vali my brother flung the body, he was tired and intoxicated and the body was fresh with flesh (meaning heavy), but now, O Delight of the Raghu race, it is fleshless and light like a bunch of (dry) grass (for) which you could throw it playfully.
nātra śakyaṅ balaṅ jñātuṅ tava vā tasya vā.dhikam.

ārdraṅ śuṣkamiti hyētatsumahadrāghavāntaram4.11.89৷৷


atra here (in this case), tava your, balam strength, adhikaṅ vā is more or, tasya vā or his, jñātum to know, na śakyam not able, rāghava Rama, ārdram wet, śuṣkamiti dried, ētat this, sumahat great, antaraṅ hi difference.

'I was unable to gauge whether your strength is more than his (Vali's) since there is a great difference between a dry body and a wet one.
sa ēva saṅśayastāta! tava tasya ca yadbalē4.11.90৷৷

sālamēkaṅ tu nirbhidyā bhavēdvyaktirbalābalē.


tāta! O dear, tava your, tasya ca and his, yat such, balē strength, sa ēva that alone, saṅśayaḥ doubt, ēkam one, sālam Sala tree, nirbhidya after splitling through, vyaktiḥ demonstrated, bhavēt will be known, balābalē strength or otherwise.

'O Dear, therefore, I have my doubt about your relative strength. If you can split a sala tree with a single arrow then can your strength or weakness be demonstrated.
kṛtvēdaṅ kārmukaṅ sajyaṅ hastihasta mivātatam4.11.91৷৷

ākarṇapūrṇamāyamya visṛjasva mahāśaram.


ātatam stretched, hastihastamiva like the elephant's trunk, ētat that, kārmukam bow, sajyam strung(tie it with string), kṛtvā after doing, ākarṇapūrṇam drawing it (the string) to the ear, āyamya after stretching, mahāśaram great arrow, visṛjasva release.

'Now string your bow, draw it like the trunk of an elephant up to your ear and release the great arrow.
imaṅ hi sālaṅ sahita stvayā śarō

na saṅśayō.trāsti vidārayiṣyati.

alaṅ vimarśēna mama priyaṅ dhruvaṅ

kuruṣva rājātmaja! śāpitō mayā4.11.92৷৷


rājan king, tvayā your, prahitaḥ good, śaraḥ arrow, imaṅ sālam this sala tree, vidārayiṣyati will pierce through, atra then, saṅśayaḥ doubt, nāsti will not be there, vimarśēna clear, alam enough, dhruvam certainly, mama to me, priyam gladden, kuruṣva do, mayā my, pratiśāpitaḥ not to test you.

'It will be enough and my doubt will be cleared. If you can pierce the sala tree with your arrow it will be my pleasure and not a test of your strength.
yathā hi tējassu varassadā ravi-

ryathā hi śailō himavānmahādriṣu.

yathā catuṣpātsu ca kēsarī vara-

stathā naraṇāmasi vikramē varaḥ4.11.93৷৷


tējassu among the brilliant, raviḥ Sun, yathā as, varaḥ best, mahādriṣu among the great mountains, himavān śailaḥ Himalaya mountain, yathā as, catuṣpātsu among the quadrupeds, kēsarī lion, yathā as, varaḥ best, tathā similarly, narāṇām among men, vikramē in valour, varaḥ best, asi you are.

'Just as the Sun is the best among the brilliant, the Himalayas among the great mountains, the lion among the quadrupeds, so also you are the best among men of valour.'
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ēkādaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the eleventh sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
