[Rama explains to Vali the righteous duties of kings --- justifies his action in killing him --- Vali pleads with Rama to protect Angada]

ityuktaḥ praśritaṅ vākyaṅ dharmārthasahitaṅ hitam.

paruṣaṅ vālinā rāmō nihatēna vicētasā4.18.1৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, nihatēna struck, vicētasā confused in mind, vālinā Vali, dharmārthasahitam righteous, hitam well-meaning, praśritam courteous, paruṣam harsh, vākyam words, iti these, uktaḥ said.

To these harsh words though seemingly well-meaning, courteous and righteous, Vali who had been mortally wounded and confused in mind, Rama replied:
taṅ niṣprabhamivādityaṅ muktatōyamivāmbudam.

uktavākyaṅ hariśrēṣṭhamupaśāntamivānalam4.18.2৷৷

dharmārthaguṇasampannaṅ harīśvaramanuttamam.

adhikṣiptastadā rāmaḥ paścādvālinamabravīt4.18.3৷৷


tadā then, adhikṣiptaḥ having been criticised, rāmaḥ Rama, niṣprabham lost his glow, ādityam Sun, iva like, muktatōyam rain-drained, ambudamiva like the cloud, upaśāntam extinguished, analam iva like the fire, hariśrēṣṭham best of monkeys, harīśvaram king of monkeys, anuttamam excellent, dharmārthaguṇasampannam righteous, uktavākyam spoke out, vālinam to Vali, paścāt later, abravīt said.

To righteous Vali,the best of the monkeys, the lord of the monkeys, who looked like the Sun shorn of his brilliance or a rain-drained cloud or a fire that had been extinguished. Rama, under the scanner, said in reply:
dharmamarthaṅ ca kāmaṅ ca samayaṅ cāpi laukikam.

avijñāya kathaṅ bālyānmāmihādya vigarhasē4.18.4৷৷


dharmam righteousness, arthaṅ ca and wealth, kāmaṅ ca pleasure also, laukikam worldliness, samayaṅ ca at this time, avijñāya not knowing, iha here, adya today, bālyāt from ignorance, mām to me, katham how , vigarhasē blame.

'Without correct knowledge of dharma, artha, kama and worldly ways, how do you reproach me bitterly now in total ignorance?
apṛṣṭvā buddhisampannānvṛddhānācāryasammatān.

saumya! vānaracāpalyātkiṅ māvaktumihēcchasi4.18.5৷৷


buddhisampannān endowed with intelligence, ācāryasammatān which carries the approval of teachers, vṛddhān elderly, apṛṣṭvā without consulting, tvam you,saumya gentle one, mām me, vānaracāpalyāt from frivolousness of a monkey, iha here, vaktum for talking this way, icchasi you wish.

'O gentle Vali! why do you speak with monkeyish frivolousness, without consulting the elders and teachers endowed with intelligence?
ikṣvākūṇāmiyaṅ bhūmissaśailavanakānanā.

mṛgapakṣimanuṣyāṇāṅ nigrahapragrahāvapi4.18.6৷৷


saśailavanakānanā including mountains, groves and forests, iyam this, bhūmiḥ earth, mṛgapakṣimanuṣyāṇām of animals, birds and humans, nigrahapragrahāvapi punishing and rewarding also, ikṣvākūṇām bequeathed to Ikshvaku race.

'This earth including mountains, groves and forests, animals, birds and humans belongs to the Ikshvaku kings.The right of purnishment and reward also vests with them.
tāṅ pālayati dharmātmā bharatassatyavāgṛjuḥ.

dharmakāmārthatattvajñō nigrahānugrahē rataḥ4.18.7৷৷


dharmātmā righteous, satyavāk truthful , ṛjuḥ upright one, dharmakāmārthattvajñaḥ knower of dharma, kama and artha, nigrahānugrahē in punishment and reward, rataḥ rests, bharataḥ Bharata, tām that earth, pālayati rules

'Bharata, righteous, truthful, upright, knower of dharma, artha and kama and dispenser of punishment and rewards, rules this earth.
nayaśca vinayaścōbhau yasminsatyaṅ ca susthitam.

vikramaśca yathā dṛṣṭassa rājā dēśakālavit4.18.8৷৷


yasmin in whom, nayaśca justice, vinayaśca discipline, ubhau both, satyaṅ ca and truth, susthitam firmly established, vikramaśca and courage, yathā so, dṛṣṭaḥ seen, saḥ he, dēśakālavit time and place for action, rājā king.

'Bharata in whom justice and discipline, truth and courage along with the knowledge of time and place for action are firmly rooted is king (of this earth).
tasya dharmakṛtādēśā vayamanyē ca pārthivāḥ.

carāmō vasudhāṅ kṛtsnāṅ dharmasantānamicchavaḥ4.18.9৷৷


tasya his, dharmakṛtādēśāḥ receiving instructions according to dharma, vayam we, anyē others, pārthivāśca and kings, dharmasantānam for the progress of dharma, icchavaḥ desiring, kṛtsnām this whole, vasudhām land, carāmaḥ we are going about.

'Following his command, in confirmity with dharma we and the other kings also move all over the entire world desirous of promoting dharma.
tasminnṛpatiśārdūlē bharatē dharmavatsalē.

pālayatyakhilāṅ bhūmiṅ kaścarēddharmanigraham4.18.10৷৷


nṛpatiśārdūlē when the tiger among kings, dharmavatsalē lover of dharma, tasmin in him, bharatē when Bharata, akhilām entire, bhūmim earth, pālayati while he is ruling, kaḥ who, dharmanigraham can stray from dharma, carēt and go?

'Who can stray from the path of dharma when the whole world is ruled by Bharata, a tiger among kings, and a lover of dharma?
tē vayaṅ dharmavibhraṣṭaṅ svadharmē paramē sthitāḥ.

bharatājñāṅ puraskṛtya nigṛhṇīmō yathāvidhi4.18.11৷৷


paramē supreme, svadharmē in one's own duty, sthitāḥ established, tē vayam all of us by him, bharatājñām command of Bharata, puraskṛtya regarding, yathāvidhi our duty, dharmavibhraṣṭam one who strays from the path of dharma, nigṛhṇīmō will punish.

'By the command of Bharata ,all of us are devoted to our duty of upholding dharma and virtue and duly punish those who deviate from the path of dharma.
tvaṅ tu saṅkliṣṭadharmā ca karmaṇā ca vigarhitaḥ.

kāmatantrapradhānaśca na sthitō rājavartmani4.18.12৷৷


tvaṅ tu you too, saṅkliṣṭadharmā ca are violating dharma, karmaṇā by your actions, vigarhitaḥ despised, kāmatantrapradhānaśca seeking pleasures as primary, rājavartmani on the right path of kings, na sthitaḥ did not stay.

'You have violated dharma. You stand condemned for your actions. Passion is your priority. You have strayed from the right path of kings.
jyēṣṭhō bhrātā pitā caiva yaśca vidyāṅ prayacchati.

trayastē pitarō jñēyā dharmyē ca pathi vartinaḥ4.18.13৷৷


dharmyē in a righteous, pathi path, vartinaḥ those who conduct, jyēṣṭhō bhrātā elder brother, pitā caiva even father, yaśca his, vidyām knowledge, prayacchati gives, tē trayaḥ all the three, pitaraḥ are
fathers, jñēyāḥ should be known.

yavīyānātmanaḥ putraśaśiṣyaścāpi guṇōditaḥ.

putravattē trayaścintyā dharmaścēdatrakāraṇam4.18.14৷৷


yavīyān younger brother, putraḥ son, guṇōditaḥ virtuous, śiṣyaśca a pupil, tē trayaḥ these three, ātmanaḥ one's own, putravat like son, cintyāḥ should be treated, atra there, dharmaḥ dharma (morality), kāraṇam judged.

sūkṣmaḥ paramadurajēyassatāṅ dharmaḥ plavaṅgama!.

hṛdisthassarvabhūtānāmātmā vēda śubhāśubham4.18.15৷৷


plavaṅgama O monkey, satām for the pious ones, dharmaḥ dharma, sūkṣmaḥ is subtle, paramadurajēyaḥ extremely difficult to understand, sarvabhūtānām for all beings, hṛdisthaḥ in the heart, ātmā self, śubhāśubham good and bad, vēda knows.

'O monkey! dharma is very subtle. It is extremely difficult to understand. Installed in the hearts of all living beings the self knows good and evil (soul is the witness of good and evil).
capalaścapalaissārdhaṅ vānarairakṛtātmabhiḥ.

jātyandha iva jātyandhairmantrayan prēkṣasē nu kim4.18.16৷৷


capalaḥ frivolous one, akṛtātmabhiḥ by the petty-minded, capalaiḥ by the fickle ones, vānaraiḥ sārdham with the monkeys, jātyandhaiḥ iva as if blind by birth, mantrayan while counselling, prēkṣasē nu kim (why do you look at these issues) for what?

'You are fickle by nature. Your consultants are frivolous, petty-minded monkeys. It is like one born blind suppporting another blind by birth. What do you know (about dharma)?
ahaṅ tu vyaktatāmasya vacanasya bravīmi tē.

na hi māṅ kēvalaṅ rōṣāttvaṅ vigarhitumarhasi4.18.17৷৷


aham I, asya his, vacanasya of words, vyaktatām clarify, tē to you, bravīmi I will explain, tvam you, kēvalam only, rōṣāt with anger, mām me, vigarhitum blame, nārhasi hi not proper.

'I shall explain to you clearly (the reason for striking you down). It is not proper for you to despise me with mere anger and malice.
tadētatkāraṇaṅ paśya yadarthaṅ tvaṅ mayā hataḥ.

bhrāturvartasi bhāryāyāṅ tyaktvā dharmaṅ sanātanam4.18.18৷৷


tvam you, yadartham reason, mayā by me, hataḥ struck, tat ētat all about that, kāraṇam reason, paśya see, sanātanam having abandoned, dharmam law tyaktvā casting, bhrātuḥ brother's, bhāryāyām with wife, vartasi live.

'Now know the reason why I struck you down. Having abandoned the eternal law, you are living with your younger brother's wife.
asya tvaṅ dharamāṇasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ.

rumāyāṅ vartasē kāmātsnuṣāyāṅ pāpakarmakṛt4.18.19৷৷


mahātmanaḥ great self, asya of this, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, dharamāṇasya when he is alive, pāpakarmakṛt a sinner, kāmāt due to lust, snuṣāyām in your daughter-in-law, rumāyām with Ruma, vartasē live.

'You are a sinner, since you live with Ruma, who is your virtual daughter-in-law, when the great self Sugriva is alive. (A younger brother is like a son and his wife, a
daughter-in-law).
tadvyatītasya tē dharmātkāmavṛttasya vānara!.

bhrātṛbhāryāvamarśē.smindaṇḍō.yaṅ pratipāditaḥ4.18.20৷৷


vānara monkey, tat thus, dharmāt from morality, vyatītasya trespassing, kāmavṛttasya for sensual pleasure, tē to you, asmin bhrātṛbhāryāvamarśē sinning against brother's wife, ayam this, daṇḍaḥ punishment, pratipāditaḥ was justified.

'O monkey! since you have violated morality by sinning against your brother's wife this punishment is justified.
na hi dharmaviruddhasya lōkavṛttādapēyuṣaḥ.

daṇḍādanyatra paśyāmi nigrahaṅ hariyūthapa4.18.21.


hariyūthapa O lord of monkeys!, dharmaviruddhasya for one who acts against dharma, lōkavṛttāt from the accepted practice of the world, apēyuṣaḥ for one who swerved, daṇḍāt from punishing, anyatra other than this, nigraham preventing, na paśyāmi hi I have not seen.

'O lord of monkeys! I do not see any other way of controlling a person excepting punishing the one who has acted against dharma and swerved from the accepted code of conduct.
na hi tē marṣayē pāpaṅ kṣatriyō.haṅ kulōdbhavaḥ.

aurasīṅ bhaginīṅ vāpi bhāryāṅ vāpyanujasya yaḥ4.18.22৷৷

pracarēta naraḥ kāmāttasya daṇḍō vadhaḥ smṛtaḥ.


kulōdbhava: born in a good family, kṣatriyaḥ kshatriya, aham I am, tē your, pāpam sin, na marṣayē I will not pardon, yaḥ naraḥ whoever, aurasīm his own daughter, bhaginīṅ vāpi even sister also, anujasya brother's, bhāryāṅ vāpi wife also, kāmāt out of lust, pracarēta meets, tasya his, daṇḍaḥ punishment, vadhaḥ killing, smṛtaḥ ordained in scriptures.

'I am a kshatriya born of a good family. I will not pardon you for your sin. Whosoever transgresses dharma against his own daughter, sister or brother's wife out of lust should be killed according to smriti.
bharatastu mahīpālō vayaṅ tvādēśavartinaḥ4.18.23৷৷

tvaṅ tu dharmādatikrāntaḥ kathaṅ śakyaṅ upēkṣitum.


bharataḥ tu Bharata too, mahīpālaḥ king, vayaṅ tu we too, ādēśavartinaḥ follow his order, tvaṅ tu you too, dharmāt from dharma, atikrāntaḥ stayed, upēkṣitum to overlook, katham how, śakyam possible?

'Bharata is a king and we follow his command. How can you, who have strayed from dharma, go unpunished?
gurūrdharmavyatikrāntaṅ prājñō dharmēṇa pālayan4.18.24৷৷

bharataḥ kāmavṛttānāṅ nigrahē paryavasthitaḥ.


prājña: wise man, guruḥ a respectable man, dharmavyatikrāntam one who has trespassed dharma, dharmēṇa by dharma, pālayan while ruling, bharataḥ Bharata, kāmavṛttānām addicted to sensual pleasures, nigrahē to punish, paryavasthitaḥ is determined.

'Wise Bharata being a respectable king rules by dharma. By the command of Bharata, we are bent upon punishing those who have strayed from dharma by being addicted to sensual pleasures.
vayaṅ tu bharatādēśa vidhiṅ kṛtvā harīśvara!.

tvadvidhānbhinnamaryādānniyantuparyavasthitāḥ4.18.25৷৷


harīśvara! lord of monkeys, vayaṅ tu we too, bharatādēśam by Bharata's command, vidhim following his command, kṛtvā do, bhinnamaryādān deviated from the bounds of dharma, tvadvidhān this way, niyantum to punish, paryavasthitāḥ determined.

'O Vali! we have to follow Bharata's command and are bent upon punishing those wicked people who deviate from the bounds of dharma.
sugrīvēṇa ca mē sakhyaṅ lakṣmaṇēna yathā tathā.

dārarājyanimittaṅ ca niḥśrēyasi rata ssa mē4.18.26৷৷

pratijñā ca mayā dattā tadā vānarasannidhau.

pratijñā ca kathaṅ śakyā madvidhēnānavēkṣitum4.18.27৷৷


lakṣmaṇēna with Lakshmana, yathā as such, sakhyaṅ friendship, sugrīvēṇa with Sugriva, dārarājyanimittaṅ for the sake of wife and kingdom, niḥśrēyasi welfare, rata: engaged, ca and, tathā so, mē mine, tadā then, mayā by me, vānarasannidhau in the presence of monkeys, pratijñā ca a pledge, dattā made, madvidhēna a person like me, pratijñā promise, anavēkṣitum to disregard, katham how, śakyā possible?

'My friendship with Sugriva is as strong as that with Lakshmana. Its motive is the recovery of his wife and sovereignty. I have promised this to him in the presence of monkeys. How can a pledge remain unhonoured by a person like me? How is it possible?
tadēbhiḥ kāraṇaissarvairmahadbhirdharmasaṅhitaiḥ4.18.28৷৷

śāsanaṅ tapa yadyuktaṅ tadbhavānanumanyatām.


tat that, dharmasaṅhitaiḥ in consonance with dharma, sarvaiḥ all, mahadbhiḥ many big, ēbhiḥ by these, kāraṇaiḥ for these reasons, tava your, yat which, śāsanam is accorded, yuktam is proper, tat that, bhavān you, anumanyatām to be accepted

'Knowing all these reasons(many violations of dharma), it is proper for you as a king to approve of the punishment accorded to you in consonance with dharma.
sarvathā dharma ityēva draṣṭavyastava nigrahaḥ4.18.29৷৷

vayasyasyōpakartavyaṅ dharmamēvānupaśyataḥ.


tava your, nigrahaḥ overthrowing, sarvathā in all respects, dharmaḥ ityēva thus justifiable,draṣṭavyaḥ it should be viewed, dharmam dharma, anupaśyata: who follows, vayasyasya a friend's, upakartavyam ēva should be rendered.

'Punishment given to you should be viewed as a right course of action in all respects. This is the duty of a trustworthy friend who follows dharma.
śakyaṅ tvayā.pi tatkāryaṅ dharmamēvānupaśyatā4.18.30৷৷

śrūyatē manunā gītau ślōkau cāritravatsalau.

gṛhītau dharmakuśalaistattathā caritaṅ harē!4.18.31৷৷


dharmamēva dharma alone, anupaśyatā considering, tyayā.pi by you also, tat that, kāryam action, śakyam possible, manunā by Manu, cāritravatsalau those that hold good traditions dear, ślōkau two verses, gītau have been said, śrūyatē listen, dharmakuśalaiḥ by those well-versed in dharma, gṛhītau have been followed, mayā me, tat that, tathā similar, caritam followed.

'You should also have acted in that manner considering dharma. Now listen to what Manu said, in two verses that hold good traditions dear which are accepted by men well-versed in dharma. O monkey! the action taken by me is in conformity with this.
rājabhirdhṛtadaṇḍāstu kṛtvā pāpāni mānavāḥ.

nirmalāssvargamāyānti santassukṛtinō yathā4.18.32৷৷


mānavāḥ human beings, pāpāni sins, kṛtvā having done, rājabhiḥ by kings, dhṛtadaṇḍāḥ those punished, nirmalāḥ purified, sukṛtinaḥ like those men performing good deeds, santaḥ yathā like pious men, svargam heaven, āyānti will attain.

'Men who have perpetrated sins should be subjected to punishment by kings so that they become stainless and attain heaven like pious men who have performed good deeds.
śāsanādvā.pimōkṣādvā stēnaḥ stēyādvimucyatē.

rājātvaśāsanpāpasya tadavāpnōti kilbiṣam4.18.33৷৷


stēnaḥ a thief, śāsanādvā either with punishment, api or, mōkṣādvā relieved, pāpāt from that sin, vimucyatē gets absolved, aśāsan without punishing, rājā tu king also, pāpasya of a sinner, tat that, kilbiṣam sin, āpnōti himself gets afflicted.

āryēṇa mama māndhātrā vyasanaṅ ghōramīpsitam.

śramaṇēna kṛtē pāpē yathā pāpaṅ kṛtaṅ tvayā4.18.34৷৷


mama me, āryēṇa by noble, māndhātrā by Mandhata, tvayā by you, yathā like that, pāpam sin, kṛtam was perpetrated, śramaṇēna by Sramana, pāpē sin, kṛtē done, īpsitam inflicted, ghōram terrible, vyasanam punishment.

'In the past a similar sin was perpetrated by Sramana, a revered soul (mendicant) and Mandhata, a noble king of my race inflicted terrible punishment on him.
anyairapi kṛtaṅ pāpaṅ pramattairvasudhādhipaiḥ.

prāyaścittaṅ ca kurvanti tēna tacchāmyatē rajaḥ4.18.35৷৷


anyairapi by others also, kṛtam committed, pāpam vicious deeds, pramattaiḥ by those not watchful, vasudhādhipaiḥ by the kings of the earth, prāyaścittam atonement, kurvanti was done, tēna by that, tat that, rajaḥ taint, śāmyatē is removed.

'Vicious deeds have been committed by others when the kings were not watchful. Kings punish such sinners when they are vigilant. Otherwise they have to atone for their negligence.
tadalaṅ paritāpēna dharmataḥ parikalpitaḥ.

vadhō vānaraśārdūla na vayaṅ svavaśē sthitā:৷৷4.18.36৷৷


vānaraśārdūla O tiger among Monkeys, tat therefore, paritāpēna alam do not regret, vadhaḥ striking, dharmataḥ righteously, parikalpitaḥ committed, vayam we are, svavaśē under our control, na sthitāḥ are not.

'O tiger among monkeys! do not regret. Your death has the sanction of dharma. We are under the control of sastras. We are committed to them. We do not have the freedom to act independently.
śṛṇu cāpyaparaṅ bhūyaḥ kāraṇaṅ haripuṅgava.

yacchrutvā hētumadvīra! na manyuṅ kartumarhasi4.18.37৷৷


vīra O hero, haripuṅgava O best of monkeys, bhūyaḥ once again, aparam another, kāraṇam reason, śṛṇu listen, yat that, hētuma reason, śrutvā on hearing, manyum anger, kartum to entertain, nārhasi it is not proper.

'O hero! O best of monkeys! listen to me. I will give you one more reason. On hearing it, I hope you would not be angry with me.
na mē tatra manastāpō na manyurharipuṅgava!.

vāgurābhiśca pāśaiśca kūṭaiśca vividhairnarāḥ4.18.38৷৷

praticchannāśca dṛśyāśca gṛhṇanti subahūnmṛgān.


haripuṅgava O best of monkeys, tatra here, mē to me, manastāpaḥ mental agony, manyuḥ regret, na not, narāḥ people, vāgurābhiśca with mesh-net, pāśaiśca with ropes, vividhaiḥ different, kūṭaiśca with tricks, praticchannāśca hiding, dṛśyāśca out in the open, subahūn many, mṛgān animals, gṛhṇanti catch.

'O best of monkeys! I have no mental agony nor do I regret in this case. Hidden from
view or out in the open, people catch animals by means of snares or ropes or through other tricks.
pradhāvitānvā vitrastānvisrabdhāṅścāpi niṣṭhitān4.18.39৷৷

pramattānapramattānvā narā māṅsārthinō bhṛśam.

vidhyanti vimukhāṅścāpi na ca dōṣō.tra vidyatē4.18.40৷৷


māṅsārthinaḥ seeking flesh for food, narāḥ men, pradhāvitān vā or running ones, vitrastān alarmed ones, visrabdhān unalarmed, niṣṭhitān stable ones, pramattān those that are not alert, apramattānvā even alert ones also, vimukhāṅśca those which turn away, vidhyanti kill, atra here, dōṣaḥ blemish, na vidyatē not known.

'People seeking animal flesh for food kill animals alarmed or unalarmed, animals that run away or animals that stand still. They kill animals whether they are alert or not and no blemish is attached.
yānti rājarṣayaścātra mṛgayāṅ dharmakōvidāḥ.

tasmāttvaṅ nihatō yuddhē mayā bāṇēna vānara!4.18.41৷৷

ayudhyanpratiyudhyanvā yasmācchākhāmṛgō hyasi.


atra here, dharmakōvidāḥ those well-versed in dharma, rājarṣayaḥ royal saints, mṛgayām hunting, yānti go for, vānara monkey, tvam you, ayudhyan while not fighting, pratiyudhyan vā or while fighting back, yasmāt since, śākhāmṛgaḥ monkey, asi you are, tasmāt therefore, mayā myself, yuddhē in battle, bāṇēna by an arrow, nihataḥ struck down.

'O monkey! even royal saints well-versed in dharma go for hunting. I struck you down with an arrow whether you were fighting with Sugriva or not, since you are a monkey. (You can be hit whether you are fighting face to face or not).
durlabhasya ca dharmasya jīvitasya śubhasya ca4.18.42৷৷

rājānō vānaraśrēṣṭha! pradātārō na saṅśayaḥ.


vānaraśrēṣṭha! O best among monkeys rājānaḥ kings, durlabhasya difficult, dharmasya righteousness, śubhasya auspicious, jīvitasya life, pradātāraḥ donors, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na not.

'O best of monkeys! kings are donors of dharma, life and auspiciousness to people which is difficult to acquire. There is no doubt about it.
tānna hiṅsyānna cākrōśēnnākṣipēnnāpriyaṅ vadēt4.18.43৷৷

dēvā mānuṣarūpēṇa carantyētē mahītalē.


tān them, na hiṅsyāt insult, na cākrōśēt not to be shouted, na ākṣipēt not to be disregarded, apriyam unpleasant, na vadēt not speak, ētē they, dēvāḥ gods, mānuṣarūpēṇa in the form of human beings, mahītalē on this earth, caranti move about.

'One should not insult kings, nor shout at them, nor disregard them nor speak unpleasant words to them. They are gods in human form moving on this earth.
tvaṅ tu dharmamavijñāya kēvalaṅ rōṣamāsthitaḥ4.18.44৷৷

pradūṣayasi māṅ dharmē pitṛpaitāmahē sthitam.


tvaṅ tu you on your part, dharmam dharma, avijñāya not knowing, kēvalam only, rōṣam anger, āsthitaḥ have restored, pitṛpaitāmahē followed by fathers and grandfathers, dharmē in dharma, sthitam devoted, mām me, pradūṣayasi you are reproaching.

'Seized with improper anger, you are reproaching one who is devoted to dharma, without knowing that I follow the code of conduct that has been passed on by my fathers and forefathers.'
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa vālī pravyathitō bhṛśam4.18.45৷৷

na dōṣaṅ rāghavē dadhyau dharmē.dhigataniścayaḥ.


rāmēṇa by Rama, ēvam that way, uktaḥ addressed, vālī Vali, bhṛśam greatly, pravyathitaḥ was pained, dharmē in dharma, adhigataniścayaḥ had arrived at a conclusion, rāghavē at Rama, dōṣam fault, ēvamuktastu having said this way, na dadhyau did not find.

Vali was very much pained to hear Rama. He became free from confusion regarding dharma and no longer found fault with Rama.
pratyuvāca tatō rāmaṅ prāñjalirvānarēśvaraḥ৷৷4.18.46৷৷

yattvamāttha naraśrēṣṭha! tadēvaṅ nātra saṅśayaḥ.


tataḥ then, vānarēśvaraḥ Vali, prāñjaliḥ with folded hands, rāmam to Rama, pratyuvāca replied, naraśrēṣṭha O best among men, tvam you, yat what ever, āttha spoke, tadēvaṅ There is, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no, atra in this matter.

Thereafter Vali offered obeisance with folded palms to Rama, saying, 'O best among men! whatever you have spoken is undoubtedly true.'
prativaktuṅ prakṛṣṭē hi nāpakṛṣṭastu śaknuyāt4.18.47৷৷

yadayuktaṅ mayā pūrvaṅ pramādādvākyamapriyam.

tatrāpi khalu mē dōṣaṅ kartuṅ nārhasi rāghava.


rāghava Rama, prakṛṣṭē a distinguished person, apakṛṣṭaḥ an ordinary person, prativaktum to argue, na śaknuyāt is not possible, mayā by me, pūrvam earlier, pramādāt due to ignorance, yat those, ayuktam in appropriate, apriyam unpleasant, vākyam words, (uktam said), tatrāpi in that, mē my, dōṣam fault, kartum hold, nārhasi you need not be.

tadayuktaṅ mayā pūrvaṅ pramādāduktamapriyam .

tatrāpi khalu mē dōṣaṅ kartuṅ nārhasi rāghava ৷৷ 4.18.48 ৷৷

kāryakāraṇasiddhau ca prasannā buddhiravyayā4.18.49৷৷


tvam you, dṛṣṭārthatattvajñaḥ wise man given to truth and righteousness, prajānām people's, hitē wellbeing, rataśca remain devoted, avyayā knowing, buddhi: sound intellect, kāryakāraṇasiddhau know for certain about cause and effect, prasannā is pleasant.

'You are a wise man given to truth and righteousness.You remain devoted to people's well-being. As you know for certain about cause and effect your intellect is sound and words pleasant.
māmapyagatadharmāṇaṅ vyatikrāntapuraskṛtam.

dharmasaṅhitayā vācā dharmajña! paripālaya4.18.50৷৷


dharmajña knower of dharma, agatadharmāṇaṅ did not follow dharma, avagatam in the past, vyatikrāntapuraskṛtam violated the bounds of dharma in the past, māmapi and me too, dharmasaṅhitayā in a righteous manner, vācā word, paripālaya protect.

'O knower of dharma, I did not follow dharma in the past. I have trangressed the bounds of dharma. Say, you have pardoned me, protect me in a righteous manner.
na tvātmānamahaṅ śōcē na tārāṅ na ca bāndhavān.

yathā putraṅ guṇajyēṣṭhamaṅgadaṅ kanakāṅgadam 4.18.51৷৷


guṇajyēṣṭham all virtues, kanakāṅgadam adorned with golden armlets, putram son, aṅgadam Angada, yathā as, aham I, ātmānam for me, na śōcē I do not grieve, tārām Tara too, na not, bāndhavānapi even kinsmen, na not.

'I neither grieve for myself nor for Tara nor for my kinsmen. But I do for my son Angada adorned with golden armlets. He is embellished with all virtues.
sa mamādarśanāddīnō bālyātprabhṛti lālitaḥ.

taṭāka iva pītāmburupaśōṣaṅ gamiṣyati4.18.52৷৷


bālyāt from childhood, prabhṛti from that time, lālitaḥ loved, saḥ him, mama to me, ādarśadānat by not seeing me, dīnaḥ dejected, pītāmbuḥ after the water is dried up, taṭākaḥ iva like a tank, upaśōṣam left dried, gamiṣyati will become.

'I loved him very much from his childhood. He will grow depressed in my absence. He will become like a pond whose waters have been dried up.
bālaścākṛtabuddhiśca ēkaputraśca mē priyaḥ.

tārēyō rāma! bhavatā rakṣaṇīyō mahābalaḥ4.18.53৷৷


rāma! Rama, bālaśca young boy, ākṛtabuddhiśca innocent, mē my, priyaḥ dear, ēkaputraśca only son, mahābalaḥvery strong, tārēyaḥTara's son, bhavatā by you, rakṣaṇīyaḥ deserves to be protected.

'O Rama! he is my only son through Tara and dear to me. He is young,innocent but strong.He deserves to be protected by you.
sugrīvē cāṅgadē caiva vidhatsva matimuttamām.

tvaṅ hi śāstā ca gōptā ca kāryākāryavidhau sthitaḥ4.18.54৷৷


sugrīvē at Sugriva, āṅgadē caiva and at Angada, uttamām great, matim in mind, vidhatsva you may show, kāryākāryavidhau with regard to what should and should not be done, sthitaḥ sure, tvam you, gōptā ca protector and, śāstā ca also punisher.

'Shower equal affection from your heart on Sugriva and Angada. You are their protector and punisher also. You know what should and should not be done.
yā tē narapatē! vṛttirbharatē lakṣmaṇē ca yā.

sugrīvē cāṅgadē rājaṅstāṅ tvamādhātumihāsi4.18.55৷৷


narapatē O Lord of men, rājan king, bharatē Bharata, tē your, yā vṛtti: such affection, lakṣmaṇē ca and towards Lakshmana, yā whatever, tām same, sugrīvē ca Sugriva and, aṅgadē at
Angada, ādhātum to hold, iha here, arhasi you may do.

'O lord of men! may you have the same kind of affection for Sugriva and Angada as you have for Bharata and Lakshmana.
maddōṣakṛtadōṣāṅ tāṅ yathā tārāṅ tapasvinīm.

sugrīvō nāvamanyēta tathā.vasthātumarhasi4.18.56৷৷


maddōṣakṛtadōṣām suffered due to my offence, tapasvinīm wretch, tāṅ tārām that Tara, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, nāvamanyēta not think ill of her, tathā that, avasthātum to maintain, arhasi hope

'I hope Tara will not be made to suffer because of my offence. Make Sugriva not to run wretched Tara down.
tvayā hyanugṛhītēna rājyaṅ śakyamupāsitum4.18.57৷৷

tvadvaśē vartamānēna tava cittānuvartinā.

śakyaṅ divaṅ cārjayituṅ vasudhāṅ cāpi śāsitum4.18.58৷৷


tvayā by you, anugṛhītēna by a person favoured, tvadvaśē under your control, vartamānēna by one who moves, tava cittānuvartinā acts according to your will, rājyam kingdom, upāsitum to rule, śakyam it is possible, divam heaven, ārjayituṅ ca to attain, vasudhām earth, cāpi also, śakyam posssible.

'It is possible for a person favoured by you to rule the kingdom.It is possible for one who is under your control and acts according to your will to rule the entire world and earn heaven.
tvattō.haṅ vadhamākāṅkṣanvāryamāṇō.pi tārayā.

sugrīvēṇa saha bhrātrā dvandvayuddhamupāgataḥ4.18.59৷৷

ityuktvā sannatō rāmaṅ virarāma harīśvaraḥ.


aham I, tārayā by Tara, vāryamāṇō.pi even though prevented, tvattaḥ from you, vadham death, ākāṅkṣan wishing, bhrātrā with brother, sugrīvēṇa saha along with Sugriva, dvandvayuddham duel, upāgataḥ came, harīśvaraḥ lord of monkeys, vānaraḥ monkey, rāmam to Rama, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, virarāma stopped.

'Even though I was prevented by Tara, I came for a duel with Sugriva since I wished to die in your hands.' Having spoken thus to Rama, Vali fell silent.
sa tamāśvāsayadrāmō vālinaṅ vyaktadarśanam4.18.60৷৷

sāmasampannayā vācā dharmatattvārthayuktayā.


saḥ rāmaḥ Rama, vyaktadarśanam him who saw clearly, taṅ vālinam that Vali, sāmasampannayā for peace and tranquillity, dharmatattvārthayuktayā reflecting truth and righteousness, vācā with words, āśvāsayat he consoled.

Now Vali was able to see clearly. Rama consoled him with words of peace and tranquillity, truth and righteousness.
na santāpastvayā kārya ētadarthaṅ plavaṅgama!4.18.61৷৷

na vayaṅ bhavatā cintyā nāpyātmā harisattama.

vayaṅ bhavadviśēṣēṇa dharmataḥ kṛtaniścayāḥ4.18.62৷৷


plavaṅgama! O monkey, ētadartham on this account, tvayā by you, santāpaḥ worry, na kāryaḥ not to be entertained, harisattama best of the monkeys, bhavatā by you, vayam we, na cintyāḥ not worry, ātmāpi you too, na not, vayam we, bhavadviśēṣēṇa for your sin, dharmataḥ principles of righteousness, kṛtaniścayāḥ came to firm decision.

'O best of monkeys, abandon all your anxiety on this score. Bother not about us or about yourself. Whatever has happened, has happened in consonance with dharma.
daṇḍyē yaḥ pātayēddaṇḍaṅ daṇḍyō yaścāpi daṇḍyatē.

kāryakāraṇasiddhārthā vubhau tau nāvasīdataḥ4.18.63৷৷


yaḥ whoever, daṇḍyē deserves to be punished, daṇḍam punishment, pātayēt inflicts, yaścāpi and whosoever, daṇḍyaḥ sinner, daṇḍyatē punished, kāryakāraṇasiddhārthau with regard to cause and effect, tau they, ubhau both, nāvasīdataḥ do not become despondent.

'The sinner and the punisher, whoever gives punishment and whoever receives it, are both regulated by the law of cause and effect. So do not despair.
tadbhavāndaṇḍasaṅyōgādasmādvigatakalmaṣaḥ.

gatassvāṅ prakṛtiṅ dharmyaṅ dharmadṛṣṭēna vartmanā4.18.64৷৷


tat such, bhavān you asmāt from this, daṇḍasaṅyōgāt due to punishment, vigatakalmaṣaḥ got rid of sin, dharmadṛṣṭēna from the point of righteousness, vartmanā by the path, dharmyām righteous, svām your, prakṛtim natura spiritual nature, gataḥ you regained.

'You have been purged of your sin through punishment from the point of view of righteousness. You have regained your spiritual nature on the path of dharma.
tyaja śōkaṅ ca mōhaṅ ca bhayaṅ ca hṛdayē sthitam.

tvayā vidhānaṅ haryagrya! na śakyamativartitum4.18.65৷৷


haryagrya O best of vanaras, hṛdayē at heart, sthitam left over, śōkaṅ ca sorrow, mōhaṅ ca and delusion, bhayaṅ ca and fear, tyaja abandon, tvayā by your, vidhānam fate, ativartitum trangress, na śakyam not possible.

'O best of monkeys! remove sorrow from your heart, delusion and fear. It is not possible for you to transgress fate.
yathā tvayyaṅgadō nityaṅ vartatē vānarēśvara!.

tathā vartēta sugrīvē mayi cāpi na saṅśayaḥ4.18.66৷৷


vānarēśvara lord of monkeys, aṅgadaḥ Angada, tvayi with you, nityaṅ always, yathā as, vartatē conduct, sugrīvē in Sugriva, mayi cāpi in me too, tathā in the same way, vartēta he may conduct, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

'O lord of monkeys! Angada will remain with Sugriva and with me as he used to live with you. Rest assured.'
sa tasya vākyaṅ madhuraṅ mahātmana-

ssamāhitaṅ dharmapathānuvartinaḥ.

niśamya rāmasya raṇāvamardinō

vacassuyuktaṅ nijagāda vānaraḥ4.18.67৷৷


saḥ vānaraḥ that monkey, mahātmanaḥ of the great, dharmapathānuvartinaḥ of a man following a righteous path, raṇāvamardinaḥ a crusher of enemy in war, tasya rāmasya that Rama's, madhuram sweet, samāhitam well-composed, vākyam words, niśamya after hearing, suyuktam very fitting, vacaḥ words, nijagāda replied.

Having listened to the sweet, well-composed words of great Rama, a crusher of the enemy in war ,follower of righteous path, Vali replied in appropriate manner:
śarābhitaptēna vicētasā mayā

pradūṣitastvaṅ yadajānatā prabhō.

idaṅ mahēndrōpama bhīmavikrama!

prasāditastvaṅ kṣama mē narēśvara!4.18.68৷৷


prabhō O lord, mahēndrōpam like Indra, bhīmavikrama hero of immense valour, narēśvara lord of men, śarābhitaptēna excruciating pain caused by the arrow, vicētasā loss of consciousness, ajānatā without knowing, mayā by me, tvam you, yat since, pradūṣitaḥ blamed very much, mē I, idam thus, kṣamasva forgive, tvam you, prasāditaḥ be pleased.

'Pray, O mighty prince, hero of immense valour, pardon me for the words of blame I unwittingly hurled at you. I said all that in excruciating pain caused by your mighty arrow and in confusion of what is right and what is wrong.'
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē aṣṭādaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the eighteenth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
