[Vali repents --- asks Sugriva to take care of Angada and Tara --- hands over his golden necklace to Sugriva --- exhorts Angada.]

vīkṣamāṇastu mandāsussarvatō mandamucchvasan.

ādāvēva tu sugrīvaṅ dadarśatvātmajāgrataḥ4.22.1৷৷


mandāsuḥ slowly, mandaṅ feebly, ucchvasan sighing, sarvataḥ all over, vīkṣamāṇaḥ tu gazing all round, ādāvēva at first instance, agrataḥ front, ātmajaḥ his own son, sugrīvam Sugriva, dadarśa saw.

Vali, gazing all around, breathing slowly and sighing feably beheld Sugriva at first instance, Sugriva who was standing in front of his own son.
taṅ prāptavijayaṅ vālī sugrīvaṅ plavagēśvaraḥ.

ābhāṣya vyaktayā vācā sasnēhamidamabravīt4.22.2৷৷


plavagēśvaraḥ lord of monkeys, vālī Vali, prāptavijayam had won a victory, taṅ sugrīvam to that Sugriva, ābhāṣya spoke, vyaktayā addressing, vācā words, sasnēham with love, idam this, abravīt said.

Vali, the lord of monkeys, lovingly said to Sugriva, who had won a victory:
sugrīva! dōṣēṇa na māṅ gantumarhasi kilbiṣāt.

kṛṣyamāṇaṅ bhaviṣyēṇa buddhimōhēna māṅ balāt4.22.3৷৷


sugrīva! O Sugriva, mām me, dōṣēṇa by mistake, gantum exiling, na arhasi ought not to, kilbiṣāt due to mistake, bhaviṣyēṇa in future, buddhimōhēna by deluded, balāt by force mām me, kṛṣyamāṇam bound

'O Sugriva! you ought not to accuse me of exiling you, and wresting your wife. My
mind was deluded by the force of fate that controls one's future.
yugapadvihitaṅ tāta! na manyē sukhamāvayōḥ.

sauhārda bhrātṛyuktaṅ hi tadidaṅ tāta! nānyathā4.22.4৷৷


tāta! O dear!, āvayōḥ for both of us, sukham happiness, yugapat at the same time, na manyē I also do not believe, bhrātṛyuktam not right for brothers, tat so, idam this, sauhārdam friendship between us, na anyathā not otherwise, jātam is created.

'O dear! I believe that both of us are not destined to enjoy the love and happiness that come together to brothers.
pratipadya tvamadyaiva rājyamēṣāṅ vanaukasām.

māmapyadyaiva gacchantaṅ viddhi vaivasvatakṣayam4.22.5৷৷


tvam you, adyaiva just now, ēṣām of these, vanaukasām forest dwellers, rājyam kingdom, pratipadya accept, māmapi me also, adyaiva now, vaivasvatakṣayam the abode of Vivasvan, lord of the death, gacchantam going, viddhi know.

jīvitaṅ ca hi rājyaṅ ca śriyaṅ ca vipulāmimām.

prajahāmyēṣa vai tūrṇaṅ mahaccāgarhitaṅ yaśaḥ4.22.6৷৷


ēṣaḥ aham thus I, jīvitaṅ ca life also, rājyaṅ ca even kingdom, imām this, vipulām vast, śriyaṅ ca and prosperity, agarhitam untarnished, yaśaḥ ca and fame, tūrṇam soon, ēṣaḥ here I am, prajahāmi leaving.

'I am leaving this world soon, along with this vast kingdom, prosperity and untarnished fame.
asyāṅ tvahamavasthāyāṅ vīra! vakṣyāmi yadvacaḥ.

yadyapyasukaraṅ rājankartumēva tadarhasi4.22.7


vīra O warrior, rājan O king, asyāṅ avasthāyām at this stage, aham I, yat those, vacaḥ words, vakṣyāmi speaking, asukaraṅ not easy to do, yadyapi even though, kartumēva only to carry out, tvam you, arhasi ought to.

'O warrior king! you should do whatever I request you at this hour even though it may not be easy.
sukhārhaṅ sukhasaṅvṛddhaṅ bālamēnamabāliśam.

bāṣpapūrṇamukhaṅ paśya bhūmau patitamaṅgadam4.22.8৷৷


sukhārham who deserves happiness, sukhasaṅvṛddham raised with comfort, bālam young boy, abāliśam youthful, bāṣpapūrṇamukham tearful face, bhūmau on the ground, patitam fallen down, aṅgadam Angada, paśya see.

'Look at this young Angada fallen on the ground, face flooded with tears. Raised with comfort, he deserves to be kept happy.
mama prāṇaiḥ priyataraṅ putraṅ putramivaurasam.

mayā hīnamahīnārthaṅ parvataḥ paripālaya4.22.9৷৷


mama my, prāṇaiḥ more than life, priyataram dearer to me, mayā by me, hīnam separated, putram son, aurasaṅ putraṅ iva like your own son, sarvataḥ in all respects, ahīnārtham without being deprived of anything, paripālaya take care of him.

'He is dearer to me than my life. Take care of him like your own son. He is separated from me. Take care of him in all respects, so that he is not deprived of anything.
tvamēvāsya hi dātā ca paritrātā ca sarvaśaḥ.

bhayēṣvabhayadaścaiva yathā.haṅ plavagēśvara!৷৷4.22.10৷৷


plavagēśvara O lord of monkeys!, aham I, yathā as I am, tvamēva you alone, asya his, (pitā father), dātā provider, sarvaśaḥ of everything, paritrātā ca and saviour, bhayēṣu in danger, abhayadaścaiva protector.

'O lord of monkeys! from now on, you alone will be his father, provider of everything, saviour and protector in danger.
ēṣa tārātmaja śrīmāṅstvayā tulyaparākramaḥ.

rakṣasāṅ ca vadhē tēṣāmagratastē bhaviṣyati4.22.11৷৷


śrīmān prosperous, tvayā to you, tulyaparākramaḥ equal in valour, ēṣaḥ this, tārātmajaḥ son of Tara, tēṣām their, rakṣasām demons, vadhē crush, tē to you, agrataḥ on the forefront, bhaviṣyati will remain.

'This prosperous son of Tara, your equal in valour, will remain with you in the forefront to crush demons.
anurūpāṇi karmāṇi vikramya balavānraṇē.

kariṣyatyēṣa tārēyastarasvī taruṇō.ṅgadaḥ4.22.12৷৷


balavān strong, tārēyaḥ of Tara's, tarasvī fast, taruṇaḥ young, ēṣaḥ aṅgadaḥ this Angada, raṇē in war, vikramya strike, anurūpāṇi fitting , karmāṇi deeds, kariṣyati will do.

'This mighty hero Angada, son of Tara, is young and dynamic. He will strike (the enemy) in a fitting manner in war.
suṣēṇaduhitā cēyamarthasūkṣmavimaniścayē.

autpātikē ca vividhē sarvataḥ pariniṣṭhitā4.22.13৷৷


suṣēṇaduhitā daughter of Sushena, iyaṅ ca and she also , arthasūkṣmaviniścayē in disecerning subtle matters, vividhē various, autpātikē ca and in fore-seeing events that come up suddenly, sarvataḥall over, pariniṣṭhitā very efficient( in crisis management),

'Tara, daughter of Sushena, is wise and efficient in discerning subtle matters and in foreseeing unexpected events.
yadēṣā sādhviti brūyātkāryaṅ tanmuktasaṅśayam.

na hi tārāmataṅ kiñcidanyathā parivartatē4.22.14৷৷


ēṣā she, yat whatever, sādhu iti treat it to be right, brūyāt speak, tat that, muktasaṅśayam without any doubt, kāryam work, tārāmatam her opinion, kiñcat even a little, anyathā otherwise, na parivartatē hi does not change.

'Tara's opinion is never wrong. It does not change. Whatever she speaks is right and should be carried out without any doubt.
rāghavasya ca tē kāryaṅ kartavyamaviśaṅkayā.

syādadharmō hyakaraṇē tvāṅ ca hiṅsyādvimānitaḥ4.22.15৷৷


rāghavasya Rama's, kāryaṅ ca work also, tē to you, aviśaṅkayā without hesitation, kartavyam duty, akaraṇē not do, adharmaḥ unrighteousness, syāt hi will be, amānitaḥ disobeyed, tvām you, hiṅsyāt ca will hurt.

'You ought to carry out Rama's work without hesitation. If you do not, it will be unrighteous and harmful.
imāṅ ca mālāmādhatsva divyāṅ sugrīva kāñcanīm.

udārā śrīsthitā hyāsyāṅ samprajahyānmṛtē mayi4.22.16৷৷


sugrīva O Sugriva, divyāṅ divine, kāñcanīm golden, imāṅ mālām this necklace, adhatsva wear now, asyām in it, sthitā present, udārā great, śrīḥ brightness, mayi when me, mṛtē (when) dead,
samprajahyāt hi it will be gone.

'O Sugriva! put on this divine golden necklace. It has great brilliance. Its present lustre may be gone when I am dead.'
ityēvamuktassugrīvō vālinā bhrātṛsauhṛdāt.

harṣaṅ tyaktvā punardīnō grahagrasta ivōḍurāṭ4.22.17৷৷


vālinā by Vali, bhrātṛsauhṛdāt due to brotherly affection, ityēvam thus, uktaḥ spoken, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, harṣam happiness, tyaktvā having given up , punaḥ again, dīnaḥ dull, grahagrastaḥ eclipsed by planet Rahu, uḍurāṭ iva like the Moon.

Thus spoken to by Vali with brotherly affection, Sugriva gave up joy (of victory) and appeared dull like the Moon eclipsed by planet Rahu.
tadvālivacanācchāntaḥ kurvanyuktamatandritaḥ.

jagrāha sō.bhyanujñātō mālāṅ tāṅ caiva kāñcanīm4.22.18৷৷


saḥ he, tadvālivacanāt by the words of Vali, śāntaḥ became composed, atandritaḥ without any ill-feeling, yuktam proper, kurvan carrying out, abhyanujñātaḥ with the permission, kāñcanīm golden, tāṅ mālām that necklace, jagrāha received.

On hearing Vali's words, Sugriva became composed with no ill-feeling. Considering it to be proper, he received with his permission the golden necklace.
tāṅ mālāṅ kāñcanīm dattvā dṛṣṭvācaivātmajaṅ sthitam.

saṅsiddhaḥ prētyabhāvāya snēhādaṅgadamabravīt4.22.19৷৷


kāñcanīm golden, tāṅ mālām that necklace, dattvā having given, sthitam him who stood by, ātmajaṅ ca and son, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, prētyabhāvāya with a feeling of preparedness for death, saṅsiddhaḥ ready to depart, snēhāt with affection, aṅgadam to Angada, abravīt said.

Having given the golden necklace to Sugriva,Vali, feeling ready to depart, looked at his son Angada who stood by and spoke affectionately:
dēśakālau bhajasvādya kṣamamāṇaḥ priyāpriyē.

sukhaduḥkha saha: kālē sugrīvavaśagō bhava4.22.20৷৷


adya now, priyāpriyē dear or otherwise, kṣamamāṇaḥ forgiving, dēśakālau regard to time and place, bhajasva serve, kālē in time, sukhaduḥkhasahaḥ enduring pleasure and pain equally, sugrīvavaśagaḥ bhava submit to Sugriva's will.

'Enduring pleasure or pain equally with due regard to time and place favourable to you or otherwise, you should submit to the will of Sugriva.
yathā hi tvaṅ mahābāhō! lālitassatataṅ mayā.

na tathā vartamānaṅ tvāṅ sugrīvō bahumaṅsyatē৷৷4.22.21৷৷


mahābāhō O long-armed one, tvam you, satatam always, mayā by me, yathā as, lālitaḥ affectionately, tathā in that way, vartamānam as in the present, tvām to you, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, na bahumaṅsyatē not bring you up.

'O long-armed one! you have always been affectionately brought up by me. Sugriva may not rear you that way.
mā.syāmitrairgataṅ gacchērmā śatrubhirarindama!.

bharturarthaparō dāntaḥ sugrīvavaśagō bhava4.22.22৷৷


arindama! O conqueror of enemies, asya his, amitraiḥ friends his enemies, gatam in the past , mā gacchēḥ after my exit, śatrubhiḥ with his enemies too, mā do not, bhartuḥ protector's, arthaparaḥ devoted to his interests, dāntaḥ self-restrained, sugrīvavaśagaḥ stand by Sugriva, bhava you.

'O conqueror of foes! do not align with his enemies or with the friends of his enemies. Remain self-restrained and loyal to Sugriva. Be subordinate to his will.
na cātipraṇayaḥ kāryaḥ kartavyō.praṇayaśca tē.

ubhayaṅ hi mahāndōṣa stasmādantaradṛgbhava4.22.23৷৷


atipraṇayaḥ excessively friendly, tē by you, na kāryaḥ should not be, apraṇayaśca lack of love also, na kartavyaḥ not to be, ubhayam both, mahāndōṣam will amount to serious mistake, tasmāt therefore, antaradṛk insightful, bhava be.

'You are not to be excessively friendly or otherise as both are serious mistakes. Therefore, be insightful.'
ityuktvā.tha vivṛttākṣaḥ śarasampīḍitō bhṛśam.

vivṛtairdaśanai rbhīmairbabhūvōtkrāntajīvitaḥ4.22.24৷৷


bhṛśam intensely, śarasampīḍitaḥ formented by the arrow, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, atha then, vivṛttākṣaḥ popping out his eyes, vivṛtaiḥ with opened, bhīmaiḥ with dreadful, daśanaiḥ with teeth, utkrāntajīvitaḥ dead, babhūva remained.

Having spoken this, tormented by the arrow, eyes popping out and his dreadful teeth ejected, Vali remained drained of life.
tatō vicukruśustatra vānarā hariyūthapāḥ.

paridēvayamānāstē sarvē plavagapuṅgavā:4.22.25৷৷


tataḥ then, plavagapuṅgavā: best of the monkeys, sarvē all, tē vānarāḥ the monkeys, hariyūthapāḥ leaders of monkey troops, paridēvayamānāḥ bewailing, tatra there, vicukruśuḥ cried bitterly.

Then the best of the monkeys and their troop leaders bewailed the death of Vali, crying bitterly.
kiṣkindhā hyadya śūnyā.sītsvargatē vānarādhipē.

udyānāni ca śūnyāni parvatāḥ kānanāni ca4.22.26৷৷

hatē plavagaśārdūlē niṣprabhā vānarāḥ kṛtāḥ.


vānarādhipē when the lord of monkeys, svargatē had gone to heaven, kiṣkindhā Kishkinda, śūnyā hi is desolate, udyānāni ca pleasure gardens, śūnyāni empty, parvatāḥ mountains, kānanāni ca forests also, plavagaśārdūlē tigers among monkeys, hatē is killed, vānarāḥ monkeys, niṣprabhāḥ dull, kṛtāḥ became.

Lord of monkeys having gone to heaven, Kishkinda looked desolate including the pleasure gardens, the mountains and forests. The monkeys also became dull.
yasya vēgēna mahatā kānanāni vanāni ca.

puṣpaughēṇānubadhyantē kariṣyati tadadya kaḥ4.22.27৷৷


yasya whose, mahatā vēgēna at high speed, kānanāni forests, vanāni ca and gardens, puṣpaughēṇa with heavy flow of flowers, anubadhyantē joined now, tat that, adya now, kaḥ who, kariṣyati can do?

(The vanaras wailed aloud saying) 'The forests and gardens looked connected together with the flowers that swayed by his speed .Who can do that now?
yēna dattaṅ mahadyuddhaṅ gandharvasya mahātmanaḥ4.22.28৷৷

gōlabhasya mahābāhōrdaśavarṣāṇi pañca ca.

naiva rātrau na divasē tadyuddhamupaśāmyati4.22.29৷৷


yēna by him, mahātmanaḥ of the great self, mahābāhōḥ of strong shoulders, gōlabhasya of Golabha, gandharvasya of gandharva, daśa ten, pañca five, ca and, varṣāṇi years, mahat great, yuddham war, dattam given, tat yuddham that war, rātrau during night, naiva upaśāmyati not stops, divasē during day, na not.

'Great soul, Vali endowed with stout shoulders joined a duel with a gandharva called Golabha for fifteen years non-stop night and day.
tatastu ṣōḍaśē varṣē gōlabhō vinipātitaḥ.

hatvā taṅ durvinītaṅ tu vālī daṅṣṭrākarālavān4.22.30৷৷

sarvā.bhayaṅkarō.smākaṅ kathamēṣa nipātitaḥ.


tataḥ then, ṣōḍaśē in the sixteenth, varṣē year, gōlabhaḥ Golabha, vinipātitaḥ was thrown down, daṅṣṭrākarālavān of dreadful teeth, vālī Vali, durvinītam the uncontrollable, tam him, hatvā on killing, asmākam to us, sarvā.bhayaṅkaraḥ rendering security, ēṣaḥ such, katham how, nipātitaḥ killed.

'In the sixteenth year Golabha, the uncontrollable enemy was killed by Vali with his dreadful fangs and rendered protection to everybody. How did he get killed?'
hatē tu vīrē plavagādhipē tadā

plavaṅgamāstatra na śarma lēbhirē.

vanēcarāḥ siṅhayutē mahāvanē

yathā hi gāvō nihatē gavāṅ patau4.22.31৷৷


siṅhayutē in a place full of lions, mahāvanē in a huge forest, gavām of cattle, patau the lord, nihatē when killed, vanēcarāḥ wanderers of the forest, gāvaḥ cows, yathā as, tadā then, vīrē when the hero, plavagādhipē chief of monkeys, hatē when killed, tatra there, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, śarma peace of mind, na lēbhirē not get.

Just as the cattle get frightened when the leader of the herd gets killed in a huge forest full of lions, the young monkey became puzzled when the chief of monkeys got killed.
tatastu tārā vyasanārṇavāplutā

mṛtasya bharturvadanaṅ samīkṣya sā.

jagāma bhūmiṅ parirabhya vālinaṅ

mahādrumaṅ chinnamivāśritā latā4.22.32৷৷


tataḥ then, sā tārā that Tara, vyasanārṇavāplutā immersed in the sea of calamity, mṛtasya of the dead, bhartuḥ husband's, vadanam face, samīkṣya seeing, chinnam cut, mahādrumam massive tree, āśritā clinging, latā iva like a creeper clinging, vālinam Vali, parirabhya having embraced him, bhūmim on the ground, jagāma fell.

Then Tara, immersed in a sea of sorrow, looked at the face of her dead husband and sank, embracing Vali, like a creeper clinging to the massive tree when the tree is cut down.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē dvāviṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentysecond sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
