[Sugriva asks the army to move eastward --- description of eastern direction.]

atha rājā samṛddhārthassugrīvaḥ plavagēśvaraḥ.

uvāca naraśārdūlaṅ rāmaṅ parabalārdanam৷৷4.40.1৷৷


plavagēśvaraḥ lord of monkeys, rājā king, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, samṛddhārthaḥ supported by massive army, atha then, naraśārdūlam tiger among men, parabalārdanam who could crush enemy army, rāmam to Rama, uvāca said.

Sugriva, lord of monkeys, who was supported by a massive army informed Rama, the tiger among men and a crusher of the enemy army;
āgatā viniviṣṭāśca balinaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ.

vānarā vāraṇēndrabhā: yē madviṣayavāsinaḥ৷৷4.40.2৷৷


yē those, madviṣayavāsinaḥ residing in my kingdom, balinaḥ strong, kāmarūpiṇa: who can assume any form at will, vāraṇēndrabhā: huge like elephants, vānarēndrāḥ vanara heroes, āgatāḥ have come, viniviṣṭāśca have settled down here.

'The vanaras living in my kingdom have come and have settled down. They are strong and huge like elephants and they can assume any form at will.
ta imē bahuvikrāntairharibhirbhīmavikramaiḥ.

āgatā vānarā ghōrā daityadānavasannibhāḥ৷৷4.40.3৷৷


ghōrāḥ dreadful, daityadānavasannibhāḥ resemble daityas and demons in form, tē those, imē vānarāḥ vanaras, bahuvikrāntaiḥ very powerful, haribhiḥ monkeys, bhīmavikramaiḥ of frightening valour, āgatāḥ have arrived.

'Dreadful monkeys, powerful monkeys of fierce valour who resemble demons in form, have arrived.
khyātakarmāpadānāśca balavantō jitaklamāḥ.

parākramēṣu vikhyātā vyavasāyēṣu cōttamāḥ৷৷4.40.4৷৷

pṛthivyambucarā rāma! nānānaganivāsinaḥ.

kōṭyagraśa imē prāptā vānarāstava kiṅkarāḥ৷৷4.40.5৷৷


rāma O Rama, khyātakarmāpadānāśca earned fame for their valiant deeds in the past, balavantaḥ powerful ones, jitaklamāḥ indefatigable, parākramēṣu in might, vikhyātāḥ famous, vyavasāyēṣu in making efforts, uttamāḥ best, pṛthivyambucarāḥ who can move on earth as well as water, nānānaganivāsinaḥ living on several mountains, imē they, vānarāḥ vanaras, kōṭyagraśa: crores of them, tava your, kiṅkarāḥ vanaras, prāptāḥ have come.

Powerful vanaras who have earned fame for their valiant deeds in the past, those who are indefatigable and well-known for their valour having gained pre-eminence through their efforts and living on several mountains, those who can move on the earth as well as water, crores of them have arrived.
nidēśavartinassarvē sarvē guruhitē ratāḥ.

abhiprētamanuṣṭhātuṅ tava śakṣyantyarindama৷৷4.40.6৷৷


arindama O subduer of foes, sarvē all, nidēśavartinaḥ follow your orders, sarvē all, guruhitē in the well-being of the elders, ratāḥ engaged, tava your, abhiprētam your wish, anuṣṭhātum to fulfil, śakṣyanti are capable.

'O Rama,the subduer of foes! all of them will follow your command.They are engaged in seeking the well-being of elders and can fulfil your wish.
ta imē bahusāhasrairanīkai bhīmavikramaiḥ.

āgatā vānarā ghōrā daityadānavasannibhā:৷৷4.40.7৷৷


ta imē these, ghōrā dreadful, daityadānavasannibhā: resembling daityas and danavas, bahusāhasrai in many thousands, anīkaiḥ with forces, bhīmavikramaiḥ with fierce fighters,
āgatāḥ have arrived.

'Dreadful monkeys who resemble demons have arrived along with thousands of fierce fighters.
yanmanyasē naravyāghra prāptakālaṅ taducyatām.

tatsainyaṅ tvadvaśē yuktamājñāpayitumarhasi৷৷4.40.8৷৷


naravyāghra O tiger among men, yat such that, prāptakālam proper time, manyasē if you think, tat that, ucyatām may be made known, tvadvaśē at your command, yuktam proper, tatsainyam this army, ājñāpayitum you may order, arhasi you may.

'O tiger among men! announce the proper time for action. This army is at your command. Command them.
kāmamēṣāmidaṅ kāryaṅ viditaṅ mama tattvataḥ.

tathāpi tu yathātattvamājñāpayitumarhasi৷৷4.40.9৷৷


idam this, kāryam task, mama to me, tattvataḥ in principle, ēvam that way, viditaṅ kāmam is known to me, tathāpi even then, yathātattvam properly, ājñāpayitum to order, arhasi you may.

iti bruvāṇaṅ sugrīvaṅ rāmō daśarathātmajaḥ.

bāhubhyāṅ sampariṣvajya idaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷4.40.10৷৷


daśarathātmajaḥ Dasaratha's son, rāmaḥ Rama, iti thus, bruvāṇam while he spoke, sugrīvam Sugriva, bāhubhyām both shoulders, sampariṣvajya hugged, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt said.

On hearing him, Rama, Dasaratha's son, hugged Sugriva with his arms and said:
jñāyatāṅ mama vaidēhī yadi jīvati vā na vā.

sa ca dēśō mahāprājña! yasminvasati rāvaṇaḥ৷৷4.40.11৷৷


mahāprājña! O very wise one, mama my, vaidēhī Vaidehi, jīvati vā alive or, na vā not or, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, yasmin in whichever, vasati resides, saḥ he, dēśaḥ in a place, ca and, jñāyatām it may be found out.

'O wise warrior! I wish to know whether Vaidehi is alive or not. Let the kingdom of Ravana be found out.
adhigamya tu vaidēhīṅ nilayaṅ rāvaṇasya ca.

prāptakālaṅ vidhāsyāmi tasminkālē saha tvayā৷৷4.40.12৷৷


vaidēhīm Vaidehi,rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nilayaṅ home, ca and, adhigamya going there, tasminkālē at that time, tvayāsaha in conjunction with you, prāptakālam at the right time, vidhāsyāmi I will take action.

'On locating Vaidehi in the kingdom of Ravana I shall take up proper course of action in conjunction with you.
nāhamasmin prabhuḥ kāryē vānarēśa! na lakṣmaṇaḥ.

tvamasya hētuḥ kāryasya prabhuśca plavagēśvara!৷৷4.40.13৷৷


plavagēśvara! O lord of monkeys, vānarēśa king of vanaras, aham I, asmin in this, kāryē in the task, prabhuḥ commanders, na not, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, na not, tvam you, asya of this, kāryasya of the task, hētuḥ means, prabhuśca lord.

'O lord of monkeys! neither I nor my brother Lakshmana should command the monkeys. You are the right person to do it.
tvamēvā.jñāpaya vibhō! mama kāryaviniścayam.

tvaṅ hi jānāsi yatkāryaṅ mama vīra! na saṅśayaḥ৷৷4.40.14৷৷


vibhō! O king, mama to me, kāryaviniścayam understood the task to be performed, tvamēva you only, ājñāpaya you order, vīra hero, mama my, yat kāryam that task, tvam you, jānāsi hi you are aware, saṅśayaḥ doubt na no.

'O king! you have understood the task to be performed and, therefore, issue orders without the least hesitation.
suhṛdvitīyō vikrāntaḥ prājñaḥ kālaviśēṣavit.

bhavānasmadhditē yukta ssukṛtārthō.rthavittamaḥ৷৷4.40.15৷৷


bhavān yourself, suhṛt friend, dvitīyō second friend, vikrāntaḥ valiant, prājñaḥ wise, kālaviśēṣavit knower of timely action, asmadhditē in our well-being, yuktaḥ capable, sukṛtārthaḥ strategic planner, arthavittamaḥ knower of present purpose.

'You are my second friend (Lakshmana being the first). You are valiant as well as wise. You are aware of timely action. You are interested in my well-being. You are capable. You know my purpose. You are a startegic planner'. (The present purpose is to plan the course of action. That is artha. Sugriva knows this artha very well).
ēvamuktastu sugrīvō vinataṅ nāma yūthapam.

abravīdrāmasānnidhyē lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ৷৷4.40.16৷৷

śailābhaṅ mēghanirghōṣamūrjitaṅ plavagēśvaraḥ.


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having been asked, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmasānnidhyē in the presence of Rama, dhīmataḥ learned, lakṣmaṇasya ca Lakshmana's, yūthapam a troop leader, śailābham lofty like a mountain, mēghanirghōṣam who roared like a thunderous cloud, ūrjitam well-built body, vinataṅ nāma called Vinata, plavagēśvaram lord of monkeys, abravīt said.

'In response to Rama's desire, Sugriva beckoned a troop-leader called Vinata who was well-built and lofty like a mountain. And thundering like a cloud, said to him in the presence of Rama and wise Lakshmana:
sōmasūryātmajai ssārdhaṅ vānarairvānarōttama৷৷4.40.17৷৷

dēśakālanayairyuktaḥ kāryā kāryaviniścayē.

vṛtaśśatasahaśrēṇa vānarāṇāṅ tarasvinām৷৷4.40.18৷৷

adhigaccha diśaṅ pūrvāṅ saśailavanakānanām.


vānarōttama O foremost of vanaras, dēśakālanayaiḥ with political wisdom in accordance with time and place, yuktaḥ endowed with, kāryaviniścayē in taking right decision, sōmasūryātmajai along with sons of Sun and Moon, vānaraiḥ sārdham followed by the vanaras, tarasvinām of swift ones, vānarāṇām of vanaras, śatasahasrēṇa with one hundred thousand, vṛtaḥ surrounded, saśailavanakānanām with mountains, gardens and forests, adhigaccha march forward, pūrvām to the eastern, diśaṅ direction.

'O foremost of the vanaras! march forward with the sons of Moon and Sun, followed by one lakh swift monkeys towards the eastern direction full of mountains, gardens, and forests. Endowed with political wisdom, you are capable of taking right decision in accordance with time and place.
tatra sītāṅ ca vaidēhīṅ nilayaṅ rāvaṇasya ca৷৷4.40.19৷৷

mārgadhvaṅ giriśṛṅgēṣu vanēṣu ca nadīṣu ca.


tatra there, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, sītāṅ ca Sita also, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nilayaṅ ca in the abode, giriśṛṅgēṣu on the mountain peaks, vanēṣu ca and in the forests, nadīṣu ca and river banks, mārgadhvam you may search for.

'Search for Sita in the abode of Ravana, on mountain peaks and river banks and in forests.
nadīṅ bhāgīrathīṅ ramyāṅ sarayūṅ kauśikīṅ tathā৷৷4.40.20৷৷

kālindīṅ yamunāṅ ramyāṅ yāmunaṅ ca mahāgirim.

sarasvatīṅ ca sindhuṅ ca śōṇaṅ maṇinibhōdakam৷৷4.40.21৷৷

mahīṅ kālamahīṅ caiva śailakānanaśōbhitām.

brahmamālānvidēhāṅśca mālavānkālikōsalān৷৷4.40.22৷৷

māgadhāṅśca mahāgrāmānpuṇḍrāṅnvaṅgāṅ stathaiva ca.

pattanaṅ kōśakārāṇāṅ bhūmiṅ ca rajatākarām৷৷4.40.23৷৷


bhāgīrathīṅ nadīm river Bhagirathi, ramyām beautiful, sarayūm Sarayu, tathā so also, kauśikīm Kausiki, kālindī Kalindi, ramyām picturesque, yamunām Yamuna, yāmunam found near Yamuna, mahāgiriṅ ca great mountain, sarasvatīṅ ca and Saraswati, sindhuṅ ca and Sindhu, maṇinibhōdakam with crystal-clear water, śōṇam Sona, mahīm Mahim, śailakānanaśōbhitām picturesque with mountains and forests, kālamahīṅ caiva and at Kalamahi, brahmamālān Brahmamala, vidēhāṅśca and Videha, mālavān Malava, kāśikōsalān Kasi and Kosala, māgadhān belonging to Maghada, mahāgrāmān ca and great villages, puṇḍrān and Pundra, tathaiva ca in the same order, āṅgān Anga, kōśakārāṇām country of silkworms, bhūmim kingdom, rajatākarām silver caves, bhūmiṅ ca and the land, mārgadhvam you may search for.

'Look for Sita in the beautiful places on rivers Bhagirathi, Sarayu, Kausiki and Kalindi, on the great mountains adjacent to river Yamuna, banks of rivers Saraswati, Sindhu, Sona with crystal-clear waters, the country of Mahim and Kalamahi adorned with mountains and forests. Proceed to Brahmamala, Videha, Malava, Kasi, Kosala and Maghada with great villages, the country of Pundram, Vanga, the country famous for silk worms and the land with silver caves. (It is the eastern direction of river Saravati between Himavat and Vindhya and not east of Kiskinda)
sarvamētadvicētavyaṅ mṛgayadbhistatastataḥ.

rāmasya dayitāṅ bhāryāṅ sītāṅ daśarathasnuṣām৷৷4.40.24৷৷


rāmasya Rama's, dayitām dear, bhāryām wife, daśarathasnuṣām daughter-in-law of Dasaratha, sītām Sita, tatastataḥ in all places, mṛgayadbhi: by searching, tat sarvam all over, vicētavyam search should be made.

'Search all over the place looking carefully here and there for Sita the beloved consort of Rama, daughter-in-law of Dasaratha.
samudramavagāḍhāṅśca parvatānpattanāni ca.

mandarasya ca yē kōṭiṅ saṅśritāḥ kēcidāyatām৷৷4.40.25৷৷

karṇaprāvaraṇāścaiva tathā cāpyōṣṭhakarṇakāḥ.

ghōralōhamukhāścaiva javanāścaikapādakāḥ৷৷4.40.26৷৷

akṣayā balavantaśca puruṣāḥ puruṣādakāḥ.

kirātāḥ karṇa cūḍāśca hēmāṅgā: priyadarśanāḥ৷৷4.40.27৷৷

āmamīnāśanāstatra kirātā dvīpavāsinaḥ.

antarjalacarā ghōrā naravyāghrā iti śṛtāḥ৷৷4.40.28৷৷

ētēṣāmāśrayāssarvē vicēyāḥ kāvanaukasaḥ.

giribhiryē ca gamyantē plavanēna plavēna ca৷৷4.40.29৷৷


kānanaukasaḥ inhabitants of the forests, samudram the oceans, avagāḍhān deep pits, parvatāni on the mountains,pattanāni ca and towns, mandarasya on Mandara mountain, āyatām living, kōṭim broad peaks, saṅśritāḥ taken shelter, kēcit some, karṇaprāvaraṇāścaiva who cover their ears, ōṣṭhakarṇakāḥ who have ears on lips, ghōralōhamukhāścaiva who have iron faces, javanāḥ of great speed, ēkapādakāḥ with one foot, akṣayāḥ who cannot be destroyed, balavantaśca powerful people, puruṣāḥ men, puruṣādakāḥ cannibals, kirātāḥ Kiratas, ākarṇa cūḍāḥ with hair reaching their ears, priyadarśanāḥ of pleasing appearance, hēmāṅgāḥ of golden-colour limbs, āmamīnāśanāḥ eating uncooked fish, dvīpavāsinaḥ residents of island, kirātāḥ Kiratas, iti thus, śṛtāḥ it is
heard, antarjalacarāḥ moving under water, ghōrāḥ fierce ones, naravyāghrāḥ tiger among men, ētēṣām of them, sarvē all, āśrayāḥ shelters, vicēyāḥ should be searched, yē those, giribhiḥ by moutains, plavanēna leaping animals, plavanēna ca and jumping, gamyantē should go and search.

'There are people who have taken shelter in the deep pits in the midst of the sea, in deep valleys, mountains, cities and broad peaks of Mandara mountain and forests.All those regions should be thoroughly searched. There are innumerable inhabitants,such as strong cannibals, some who cover their ears, some who have ears extended up to the lips, some with dreadful metallic faces, some swift-moving, one-footed indestructible beings. There are Kirata tribes of golden complexion and handsome looks whose tuft of hair is set to the sides so that it touches their ears. These Kiratas are Island-dwellers and they eat uncooked fish.They move in waters and are fierce, known as tiger-like men (Naravyagras because half of their body is human and other half is tiger in form). All the shelters of these forest-dwellers should be searched well.Those who can be sent by crossing mountains, those who can leap (in air) and those who can swim through waters may be also dispatched.
ratnavantaṅ yavadvīpaṅ saptarājyōpaśōbhitam.

suvarṇarūpyakaṅ caiva suvarṇākaramaṇḍitam৷৷4.40.30৷৷

yavadvīpamatikramya śiśirō nāma parvataḥ.

divaṅ spṛśati śṛṅgēṇa dēvadānavasēvitaḥ৷৷4.40.31৷৷

ētēṣāṅ giridurgēṣu prapātēṣu vanēṣu ca.

mārgadhvaṅ sahitāssarvē rāmapatnīṅ yaśasvinīm৷৷4.40.32৷৷


saptarājyōpaśōbhitam prosperous and divided into seven kingdoms, yavadvīpam island of Java, suvarṇākaramaṇḍitam glittering with gold mines, suvarṇarūpyakaṅ caiva island of gold and silver, ratnavantam rich in gems, yavadvīpam island of Java, atikramya going beyond, śiśirōnāma Sisira by name, dēvadānavasēvitaḥ frequented by gods and demons, parvataḥ mountains, śṛṅgēṇa with a peak, divam sky, spṛśati touching, sarvē all, sahitāḥ together, ētēṣām of those, giridurgēṣu inaccesible mountains, prapātēṣu at water falls, vanēṣu ca and in forests, yaśasvinīm famed, rāmapantīm Rama's wife, mārgadhvam search for.

'Go beyond Java island filled with precious gems. It has seven kingdoms. It is adorned with gold and silver mines in abundance. There is a mountain Sisira (abode of Garuda) beyond Java Island. It touches the sky with its lofty cliffs. Gods and demons visit this mountain. You may look for illustrious Rama's consort in these inaccessible mountains, waterfalls and forests.
tatō raktajalaṅ śōṇamagādhaṅ śīghragāminam.

gatvā pāraṅ samudrasya siddhacāraṇasēvitam৷৷4.40.33৷৷

tasya tīrthēṣu ramyēṣu vicitrēṣu vanēṣu ca.

rāvaṇa ssaha vaidēhyā mārgitavyastatastataḥ৷৷4.40.34৷৷


tataḥ then, raktajalam having red coloured water, śīghragāminam fast-flowing, śōṇamagādham deep river Sona, (prāpya after reaching there), samudrasya ocean's, siddhacāraṇasēvitam inhabited by Siddhas and Charanas, pāram to the opposite side, gatvā on going, tasya its, ramyēṣu in delightful, tīrthēṣu in rivers, vacitrēṣu wonderful, vanēṣu ca and forests, tatastataḥ here and there, vaidēhyā along with Vaidehi, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, mārgitavyaḥ should be sought for.

'Therefrom reach out to the swift-flowing river Sona which has red-coloured waters. Then crossing the sea which is the abode of Siddhas and Charanas search the different rivers reaching the sea, and the picturesque and wonderful forests to trace the abode of Ravana who has stolen Sita.
tata ssamudradvīpāṅśca subhīmāndraṣṭumarhatha.

ūrmimantaṅ samudraṅ ca krōśantamanilōddhatam৷৷4.40.35৷৷


tataḥ then, subhīmān fierce, samudradvīpāṅśca islands of the ocean, samudraṅ ca and the ocean, anilōddhatam swept by wind, krōśantam roaring, ūrmimantam stirred up by waves, draṣṭum to see, arhatha it is proper for you.

'Then you may continue your search in the frightening islands of the sea as well as the sea which roars when stirred up by the wind.
tatrāsurā mahākāyāśchāyāṅ gṛhṇanti nityaśaḥ.

brahmaṇā samanujñātā dīrghakālaṅ bubhukṣitāḥ৷৷4.40.36৷৷


tatra there, dīrghakālam for a long time, bubhukṣitāḥ very hungry people, mahākāyāḥ those of huge body, asurāḥ demons, brahmaṇā by Brahma, samanujñātāḥ have been permitted, nityam ever, chāyām shadow, gṛhṇanti will be catching.

'Demons of huge bodies catch the shadows of passers-by in that place as they have been hungry for long and have the permission of Brahma to do so.
taṅ kālamēghapratimaṅ mahōraganiṣēvitam.

abhigamya mahānādaṅ tīrthēnaiva mahōdadhim৷৷4.40.37৷৷

tatō raktajalaṅ bhīmaṅ lōhitaṅ nāma sāgaram.

gatvā prēkṣyatha tāṅ caiva bṛhatīṅ kūṭaśālmalīm৷৷4.40.38৷৷


kālamēghapratimam looking like black clouds at the time of dissolution, mahōraganiṣēvitam inhabited by great serpents, mahānādam roaring, mahōdadhim great ocean, raktajalaṅ with red colured water, tīrthēnaiva through the river bank, abhigamya after reaching there, lōhitaṅ nāma called Lohita, sāgaram sea, gatvā going there, bṛhatīm a huge one, tām that one, kūṭaśālmalīm Salmali tree (silk-cotton tree), prēkṣyatha seeing, caiva also.

'Reach out to the great roaring ocean which looks like a black cloud at the time of dissolution, inhabited by great serpents.Go through the bank of the river, and touch the frightening sea named Lohita of red coloured water.You will see a huge silk-cotton tree in that place.
gṛhaṅ ca vainatēyasya nānāratnavibhūṣitam.

tatra kailāsasaṅkāśaṅ vihitaṅ viśvakarmaṇā৷৷4.40.39৷৷


tatra there, nānāratnavibhūṣitam adorned with diffrent kinds of gems, kailāsasaṅkāśam looking
like the Kailasa mountain, viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, vihitam constructed, vainatēyasya Garuda's, gṛham house, ca also.

'You would see there a house of Garuda constructed by Visvakarma. It looks like the Kailasa mountain and is adorned with different kinds of gems.
tatra śailanibhā bhīmā mandēhā nāma rākṣasāḥ.

śailaśṛṅgēṣu lambantē nānārūpā bhayāvahāḥ৷৷4.40.40৷৷


tatra there, śailaśṛṅgēṣu on the mountain cliffs, śailanibhā: huge as mountain, bhīmāḥ frightening, nānārūpāḥ of different forms, bhayāvahāḥ fearsome, mandēhāḥ nāma called Mandehas, rākṣasāḥ demons, lambantē will be hanging down.

'There are frightening demons called Mandehas of different forms, fearsome as huge mountains hanging down the mountain peaks.
tē patanti jalē nityaṅ sūryasyōdayanaṅ prati.

nihatā brahmatējōbhirahanyahani rākṣasāḥ৷৷4.40.41৷৷

abhitaptāśca sūryēṇa lambantē sma punaḥ punaḥ.


tē those, rākṣasāḥ demons, ahanyahani every day, sūryōdayanaṅ prati at the time of Sunrise, nityam always, sūryēṇa by the Sun's heat, abhitaptāḥ scorched, brahmatējōbhiḥ by the power of mantras recited by brahmins, nihatāḥ dead, jalē in water, patanti drop down, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, lambantē sma keep hanging on.

'Those demons keep dropping down in water at the time of Sunrise every day, by the power of Gayatri mantras recited by brahmins scorched by the heat of the Sun. Again and again they keep hanging on to the cliffs.
tataḥ pāṇḍuramēghābhaṅ kṣīrōdaṅ nāma sāgaram৷৷4.40.42৷৷

gatvā drakṣyatha durdharṣā muktāhāramivōrmibhiḥ.


durdharṣāḥ one who is unassailable by the enemies, tataḥ then, gatvā after going, pāṇḍuramēghābham appearing like white clouds, ūrmibhiḥ white waves, muktāhāramiva like pearl chain, kṣīrōdaṅ nāma milky ocean by name, sāgaram ocean, drakṣyatha you will see.

'You who are unassailable by the enemies, will see the milky ocean appearing like clouds, resembling a pearl necklace with its rows of waves.
tasya madhyē mahān śvētō ṛṣabhō nāma parvataḥ৷৷4.40.43৷৷

divyagandhaiḥ kusumitai rājitaiśca nagairvṛtaḥ.

saraśca rājataiḥ padmairjvalitairhēmakēsaraiḥ৷৷4.40.44৷৷

nāmnā sudarśanaṅ nāma rājahaṅsaissamākulam.


tasya madhyē in the middle, divyagandhaiḥ with wonderful fragrances, kusumitaiḥ flowering, rājitaiḥ glowing, nagaiḥ with mountains, vṛtaḥ surrounded, ṛṣabhō nāma called Rishaba, śvētaḥ white, parvataḥ mountain, jvalitaiḥ with glittering, hēmakēsaraiḥ with golden filaments, rājataiḥ with silver, padmaiḥ with lotuses, rājahaṅsaiḥ with royal swans, samākulam surrounded, nāmnā known as, sudarśanaṅ nāma called Sudarsana, saraśca lake.

'In the midst of that ocean stands a majestic white mountain named Rishaba surrounded by trees filled with silver flowers emitting wonderful fragrance.There is also a lake named Sudarsana with glittering silver lotuses having gleaming golden filaments. Royal swans inhabit these surroundings.
vibudhāścāraṇā yakṣāḥ kinnarāścāpsarōgaṇāḥ৷৷4.40.45৷৷

hṛṣṭāssamabhigacchanti nalinīṅ tāṅ riraṅsavaḥ.


vibudhāḥ deities, cāraṇāḥ charanas, yakṣāḥ yakshas, kinnarāśca even kinneras, apsarōgaṇāḥ groups of apasaras, hṛṣṭāḥ joyfully, riraṅsavaḥ those desirous of strolling, tāṅ that, nalinīm lotus pond, samabhigacchanti keep coming.

'The deities, called charanas, yakshas and kinneras, also apsarasas keep coming
there to stoll by that lotus pond.
kṣīrōdaṅ samatikramya tadā drakṣyatha vānarāḥ৷৷4.40.46৷৷

jalōdaṅ sāgaraṅ śīghraṅ sarvabhūtabhayāvaham.


vānarāḥ O monkeys, kṣīrōdam milky ocean, samatikramya going beyond, sarvabhūtabhayāvaham most dreadful to all creatures, jalōdam ocean, sāgaram sea, śīghraṅ swiftly, tadā then, drakṣyatha you will see.

'O monkeys! going beyond the milky ocean you will see the seas most dreadful to all creatures.
tatra tatkōpajaṅ tējaḥ kṛtaṅ hayamukhaṅ mahat৷৷4.40.47৷৷

asyāhustanmahāvēgamōdanaṅ sacarācaram.


tatra there, tatkōpajam born out of his anger, mahat great, hayamukham face of horse, tējaḥ bright, kṛtam is created, sacarācaram both movable and immovable creatures, mahāvēgam very fast, tat that, asya its, ōdanam food, āhuḥ they said.

'Here is born Hayamukha, out of the fast-spreading fire of anger of the ocean. Its movable and immovable creatures constitute his food.
tatra vikrōśatāṅ nādō bhūtānāṅ sāgaraukasām৷৷4.40.48৷৷

śrūyatē ca samarthānāṅ dṛṣṭvā tadbaḍabāmukham.


tatra there, tat that, baḍabāmukham burning face of Vadava, dṛṣṭvā seeing, asamarthānām of the weak, vikrōśatām crying loudly, sāgaraukasām dwelling in the sea, bhūtānām of creatures, nādaḥ sound, śrūyatē is heard.

'You can hear the sounds of helpless oceanic creatures crying loudly on seeing the burning face of Vadava.
svādūdasyōttarē dēśē yōjanāni trayōdaśa৷৷4.40.49৷৷

jātarūpaśilō nāma mahānkanakaparvataḥ.


svādūdasya of the ocean of tasty water, uttarē dēśē the north direction, trayōdaśa thirteen, yōjanāni yojanas, mahān huge, kanakaparvataḥ golden mountain, jātarūpaśilō nāma called Jatarupasila.

'Thirteen yojanas to the north of this ocean of pure waters is a huge golden mountain called Jatarupasila.
tatra candrapratīkāśaṅ pannagaṅ dharaṇīdharam৷৷4.40.50৷৷

padmapatraviśālākṣaṅ tatō drakṣyatha vānarāḥ.

āsīnaṅ parvatasyāgrē sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam৷৷4.40.51৷৷

sahasraśirasaṅ dēvamanantaṅ nīlavāsasam.


vānarāḥ O monkeys, tataḥ then, tatra there, parvatasya mountain's, agrē on the top, āsīnam seated, candrapratīkāśam resembling the Moon in brightness, padmapatraviśālākṣam of large eyes like lotus petals, sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam revered by all beings, sahasraśirasam thousand-headed, nīlavāsasam robed in blue cloth, dēvam worshipped, dharaṇīdharam bearing the load of the earth, anantam Ananta, pannagam serpent, drakṣyatha you will see.

'O monkeys! on top of the mountain you will see Ananta, a thousand-hooded serpent seated, as bright as the Moon, robed in blue, with large eyes like lotus petals bearing the load of the earth, and revered by all beings.
triśirāḥ kāñcanaḥ kētustālastasya mahātmanaḥ৷৷4.40.52৷৷

sthāpitaḥ parvatasyāgrē virājati savēdikaḥ.


mahātmanaḥ high-souled, tasya parvatasya of that mountain, agrē on top, sthāpitaḥ is fixed, kētuḥ flag of Ananta, triśirāḥ triple-crowned, kāñcanaḥ golden, savēdikaḥ with an altar, tālaḥ Tala,
virājati shining.

'High-souled Ananta's flag is a three-headed golden palm tree shining on an altar on top of the mountain.
pūrvasyāṅ diśi nirmāṇaṅ kṛtaṅ tat tridaśēśvaraiḥ৷৷4.40.53৷৷

tataḥ paraṅ hēmamaya śśrīmānudayaparvataḥ.

tasya kōṭirdivaṅ spṛṣṭvā śatayōjanamāyatā৷৷4.40.54৷৷

jātarūpamayī divyā virājati savēdikā.


tat that, nirmāṇam arrangement , pūrvasyāṅ diśi in the eastern quarter, tridaśēśvaraiḥ by the gods, kṛtam done, tataḥ param beyond that, hēmamayaḥ full of gold, śrīmān famous, udayaparvataḥ mountain behind which the sun rises, tasya its, jātarūpamayī golden, divyā divine, savēdikā that altar, śatayōjanam a hundred yojanas, āyatā long, kōṭiḥ the edge, divam sky, spṛṣṭvā touching, virājati shining.

'The flag of Ananta is fixed by the gods in the eastern direction. Beyond that stands the famous golden mountain behind which the sun rises. Its golden peak with a divine altar spread over a hundred yojanas touches heaven.
sālaistālaistamālaiśca karṇikāraiśca puṣpitaiḥ৷৷4.40.55৷৷

jātarūpamayairdivyai śśōbhatē sūryasannibhaiḥ.


jātarūpamayaiḥ golden form, divyaiḥ divine, sūryasannibhaiḥ resembling the Sun, puṣpitaiḥ flowering, sālaiḥ with salas, tālaiḥ with palmyras, tamālaiśca with tamalas, karṇikāraiśca with karnikaras also, śōbhatē enchanting.

'The place looks beautiful with salas, palmyras, tamalas and karnikara trees in full bloom. These golden, divine flowers shine like the Sun-god.
tatra yōjanavistāramucchritaṅ daśayōjanam৷৷4.40.56৷৷

śṛṅgaṅ saumanasaṅ nāma jātarūpamayaṅ dhruvam.


tatra there, yōjanavistāram spread over a yojana, daśayōjanam ten yojanas, ucchritam tall, jātarūpamayam golden, dhruvam certainly, saumanasaṅ nāma called Saumanasa, śṛṅgam peak.

'There is a huge golden peak called Saumanas of ten yojanas in height spread over a breadth of one yojana.
tatrapūrvaṅ padaṅ kṛtvā purā viṣṇustrivikramē৷৷4.40.57৷৷

dvitīyaṅ śikharē mērōścakāra puruṣōttamaḥ.


puruṣōttamaḥ supreme being, viṣṇuḥ Visnu, purā formerly, trivikramē taking three strides, pūrvam first, tatra there, padam foot, kṛtvā after that, dvitīyam second, mērōḥ Meru's, śikharē on the peak, cakāra placed.

'When the supreme being, Visnu took his three strides as Lord Vamana, he placed his first foot on this peak and the second on the peak of mount Meru.
ttarēṇa parikramya jambūdvīpaṅ divākaraḥ৷৷4.40.58৷৷

dṛśyō bhavati bhūyiṣṭhaṅ śikharaṅ tanmahōcchrayam.


divākaraḥ Sun, jambūdvīpaṅ uttarēṇa north of Jambu island, parikramya circumambulating, mahōcchrayam very tall, tat that, śikharam peak, bhūyiṣṭham greatly, dṛśyaḥ is seen, bhavati will be.

'The Sun circumabulates Jambu island and when he arrives at this lofty cliff of the mountain, it takes the northern direction and becomes visible to the world.
tatra vaikhānasā nāma vālakhilyā maharṣayaḥ৷৷4.40.59৷৷

prakāśamānā dṛśyantē sūryavarṇāstapasvinaḥ.


tatra there, sūryavarṇāḥ those with the lustre of the Sun-god, tapasvīnaḥ great ascetics, vaikhānasā
nāma named Vaikhanasas, vālakhilyāḥ maharṣayaḥ Valakhilya sages, prakāśamānāḥ radiating, dṛśyantē appear.

'Over there the great ascetics Vaikhanasas and Valakhilyas appear like the radiating Sun.
ayaṅ sudarśanō dvīpaḥ purō yasya prakāśatē৷৷4.40.60৷৷

yasmiṅ stējaśca cakṣuśca sarvaprāṇabhṛtāmapi.


yasya its, puraḥ in front of, sarvaprāṇabhṛtāmapi for all beings, cakṣuśca the (ability to see with) eye, prakāśatē shines, tat that, tējaḥ glow, yasmin therefore, ayam this, sudarśanaḥ dvīpaḥ island of Sudarsana.

'The region in front of this mountain is called Sudarsana Island. This island is where the Sun who gives all beings the ability to see rises.
śailasya tasya śṛṅgēṣu kandarēṣu vanēṣu ca৷৷4.40.61৷৷

rāvaṇassaha vaidēhyā mārgitavyastatastataḥ.


tasya śailasya of that mountain, śṛṅgēṣu on the peak, kandarēṣu in the caves, vanēṣu ca in the forests, tatastataḥ here and there, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, vaidēhyāsaha with Vaidehi, mārgitavyaḥ may be looked for.

You should search for Ravana and Vaidehi on the peak of that mountain, in the caves, in the forests here and there.
kāñcanasya ca śailasya sūryasya ca mahātmanaḥ৷৷4.40.62৷৷

āviṣṭā tējasā sandhyā pūrvā raktā prakāśatē.


kāñcanasya of the golden, śailasya mountain's, mahātmanaḥ of the great, sūryasya ca and Sun's, tējasā with brightness, āviṣṭā filled, pūrvā sandhyā early morning twilight, raktā red in colour, prakāśatē will be glowing.

'The early morning twilight appears bright red because of the glow of the golden mountain as well as of the great Sun-god.
pūrvamētatkṛtaṅ dvāraṅ pṛthivyā bhuvanasya ca৷৷4.40.63৷৷

sūryasyōdayanaṅ caiva parvā hyēṣā digucyatē.


pūrvam east, ētat this, pṛthivyāḥ earth's, bhuvanasya for the world, dvāram entrance, sūryasya Sun's, udayanaṅ ca rise also, kṛtam was made, ēṣā this, pūrvā dik eastern direction, ucyatē is being called.

'Here is the entrance for the earth as well as for all the worlds and since the Sun also rises from this place it is called the eastern direction.
tasya śailasya pṛṣṭhēṣu nirjharēṣu guhāsu ca৷৷4.40.64৷৷

rāvaṇa ssaha vaidēhyā mārgitavyastatastataḥ.


tasya śailasya this mountain's, pṛṣṭhēṣu on the plain land, nirjharēṣu by the mountain streams, guhāsu ca and in caves, vaidēhyā saha along with Vaidehi, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tatastataḥ all over, mārgitavyaḥ should be searched.

'You may look for Ravana and also for Vaidehi even behind the mountain on the plains and also near the mountain streams and caves all over.
tataḥ paramagamyā syāddikpūrvā tridaśāvṛtā৷৷4.40.65৷৷

rahitā candrasūryābhyāmadṛśyā timirāvṛtā.


tataḥ param beyond that, tridaśāvṛtā guarded by gods, candrasūryābhyām by Moon and Sun, rahitā not present, timira darkness, āvṛtā pervaded by, pūrvādik eastern direction, agamyā syāt not possible to reach, adṛśyā invisible.

'Beyond, there is no Sun or Moon. Darkness pervades. It is neither accessible nor
visible. It is guarded by the gods.
śailēṣu tēṣu sarvēṣu kandarēṣu vanēṣu ca৷৷4.40.66৷৷

yē ca nōktā mayā dēśā vicēyā tēṣu jānakī.


tēṣu among those, śailēṣu on the mountains, sarvēṣu everywhere, kandarēṣu in the caves, vanēṣu ca in the forests, mayā my, yē those, dēśāḥ spots, nōktāḥ not mentioned, tēṣu in those places, jānakī Janaki, vicēyā should be searched.

'You should look for Janaki everywhere -- on the mountains, in the lakes and in the places not indicated by me.
ētāvadvānaraiśśakyaṅ gantuṅ vānarapuṅgavāḥ৷৷4.40.67৷৷

abhāskaramamaryādaṅ na jānīmastataḥ param.


vānarapuṅgavāḥ O chieftains of monkeys, ētāvat till there, vānaraiḥ by monkeys, gantum to go, śakyam is possible, abhāskaram where there is no Sunlight, amaryādaṅ ca devoid of boundaries, tataḥ param beyond that, na jānīmaḥ is not known to us.

'O chieftains! monkeys can go that far. We know not what lies beyond those boundaries where no Sun shines.
adhigamya tu vaidēhīṅ nilayaṅ rāvaṇasya ca৷৷4.40.68৷৷

māsē pūrṇē nivartadhvamudayaṅ prāpya parvatam.


udayaṅ parvatam the mountain behind which the sun rises, prāpya after reaching, vaidēhīm for Vaidehi, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nilayaṅ ca home, adhigamya after reaching, māsē in one month, pūrṇē before completion, nivartadhvam you may return.

'Reaching the mountain behind which the sun rises, look for Vaidehi and the home of Ravana and return by the month's end.
ūrdhvaṅ māsānna vastavyaṅ vasanvadhyō bhavēnmama৷৷4.40.69৷৷

siddhārthāssannivartadhvamadhigamya tu maithilīm.


māsāt ūrdhvam beyond one month, na vastavyam you should not stay away, vasan while one stays, mama to me, vadhyaḥ will be killed, siddhārthāḥ accomplishing the goal, maithilīm Maithili, adhigamya reaching, sannivartadhvam return.

'If you do not report within one month, you will be killed. May you see Maithili and come back after reaching the goal.
mahēndrakāntāṅ vanaṣaṇḍamaṇḍitāṅ

diśaṅ caritvā nipuṇēna vānarāḥ!.

avāpya sītāṅ raghuvaṅśajapriyāṅ

tatō nivṛttāssukhinō bhaviṣyatha৷৷4.40.70৷৷


vānarāḥ O monkeys, mahēndrakāntām Indra's beloved, vanaṣaṇḍamaṇḍitām bestowed with different kinds of forests and groves, diśam quarter, nipuṇēna carefully, caritvā after going about, raghuvaṅśajapriyām Rama's beloved, sītām Sita, avāpya after finding, tataḥ then, nivṛttāḥ returning, sukhinaḥ happy ones, bhaviṣyatha you will be.

'O monkeys! go about the beloved quarter (east) of Indra bestowed with differnt kinds of forests and groves. Look out carefully for Rama's beloved Sita, spot her and return, you will live happily.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṅḍē catvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortieth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
