[Sugriva promises to kill Ravana and bring Sita back --- he consoles Rama --- Rama promises to kill Vali.]

ēvamuktastu sugrīvō rāmēṇārtēna vānaraḥ.

abravītprāñjalirvākyaṅ sabāṣpaṅ bāṣpagadgadaḥ৷৷4.7.1৷৷


ārtēna by the distressed, rāmēṇa by Rama, ēvam that way, uktaḥ spoke, vānaraḥ monkey, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, bāṣpagadgadaḥ voice choked, sabāṣpam with sears, vākyam words, abravīt said

On hearing the words of Rama in deep distress, the monkey replied to him with folded hands, his throat choked with tears:
na jānē nilayaṅ tasya sarvathā pāparakṣasaḥ.

sāmarthyaṅ vikramaṅ vāpi dauṣkulēyasya vā kulam4.7.2৷৷


dauṣkulēyasya born in despicable clan, tasya his, pāparakṣasaḥ of the sinful demon, nilayam residence, sāmarthyam capacity, vikramaṅ vāpi or his valour, kulaṅ vā or even the clan, sarvathā all that, na jānē not known to me

'I do not have any knowledge of this sinful demon's dwelling , his capability, his valour or his clan or his despicable lineage.
satyaṅ tē pratijānāmi tyaja śōkamarindama!.

kariṣyāmi tathā yatnaṅ yathā prāpsyasi maithilīm4.7.3৷৷


arindama! O subduer of enemies, satyam truth, pratijānāmi I promise you, śōkam sorrow, tyaja give up, maithilīm Maithili, yathā as, prāpsyasi will obtain, tathā that way, yatnam effort, kariṣyāmi I will make

'O subduer of enemies, give up sorrow. I promise I will make necessary effort so that you will obtain the princess from Mithila.
rāvaṇaṅ sagaṇaṅ hatvā paritōṣyātmapauruṣam.

tathā.smi kartā na cirādyathā prītō bhaviṣyasi4.7.4৷৷


sagaṇam including clan, rāvaṇam Ravana, hatvā after killing, ātmapauruṣam my prowess, paritōṣya satisfy, yathā as, prītaḥ pleased, bhaviṣyasi you will be, tathā that way, na cirāt very soon, kartāsmi I will do

'With all my capability I will kill Ravana and his clan. Thus I will be able to satisfy you soon with my efforts.
alaṅ vaiklabyamālambya dhairyamātmagataṅ smara.

tvadvidhānāṅ na sadṛśamīdṛśaṅ buddhilāghavam৷৷4.7.5৷৷


vaiklabyam despair, ālambya resorting to, alam it is enough, ātmagatam your natural disposition, dhairyam patience, smara pick up, tvadvidhānām for men like you, īdṛśam such, buddhilāghavam frivolous thought, na sadṛśam is not worthy

'Give up despair. It is enough. Be patient. Maintain your natural disposition.It is unworthy of men like you to entertain such frivolus thoughts?
mayā.pi vyasanaṅ prāptaṅ bhāryāvirahajaṅ mahat.

nāhamēvaṅ hi śōcāmi na ca dhairyaṅ parityajē4.7.6৷৷


mayāpi I am also, bhāryāvirahajam due to separation from my wife, mahat great, vyasanam sorrow, prāptam shared, aham I am, ēvam in that way, na not śōcāmi I am not brooding, dhairyaṅ ca patience also, na parityajē not given up

'Separated from my wife, I, too, am afflicted with deep grief. But I do not brood, I do
not lose patience.
nāhaṅ tāmanuśōcāmi prākṛtō vānarō.pi san.

mahātmā ca vinītaśca kiṅ punardhṛtimānbhavān4.7.7৷৷


aham I am, prākṛtaḥ ordinary, vānarō.pi san although a monkey, tām her (wife), na anuśōcāmi I do not brood, mahātmā ca you are high-souled, vinītaśca humble, dhṛtimān endowed with patience, bhavān you, kiṅ punaḥ why (grieve) again.

'I am an ordinary monkey born. Even then, I do not brood over my wife. You are high-souled, humble and patient. Why do you grieve?
bāṣpamāpatitaṅ dhairyānnigrahītuṅ tvamarhasi.

maryādāṅ sattvayuktānāṅ dhṛtiṅ nōtsraṣṭumarhasi4.7.8৷৷


tvam you, āpatitam streaming down, bāṣpam tears, dhairyāt with patience, nigrahītum to restrain, arhasi you ought to, sattvayuktānām men endowed with equilibrium, maryādām mark, dhṛtim steadfastness, utsraṣṭum to deviate from, nārhasi ought not

'Restrain the flow of your tears. Be patient. Men (like you) endowed with equilibrium and dignity and patience ought not to leave their composure.
vyasanē vā.rthakṛcchrē vā bhayē vā jīvitāntakē.

vimṛśanvai svayā buddhyā dhṛtimānnāvasīdati4.7.9৷৷


vyasanē vā in grief or, arthakṛcchrē vā or even over loss of wealth, jīvitāntakē at the hour of death, bhayē vā or in fear?, dhṛtimān one who is patient, svayā buddhyā by his own wisdom, vimṛśan leaving, nāvasīdati will not despair

'In times of grief or loss of wealth or at the hour of death, one who is patient does not abandon his wisdom, he does not despair.
bāliśastu narō nityaṅ vaiklabyaṅ yō.nuvartatē.

sa majjatyavaśaśśōkē bhārākrāntēva naurjalē4.7.10৷৷


yaḥ naraḥ which man, bāliśaḥ foolish, nityam always, vaiklabyam despair, anuvartatē gives in for, saḥ he, avaśaṅ he loses self-control, bhārākrāntā burdened, nauḥ boat, jalē iva as in the water, śōkē in grief, majjati gets sunk

ēṣō.ñjalirmayā baddhaḥ praṇayāttvāṅ prasādayē.

pauruṣaṅ śraya śōkasya nāntaraṅ dātumarhasi4.7.11৷৷


mayā by me, ēṣaḥ this, añjaliḥ folded palms, baddhaḥ is held, praṇayāt out of friendship, tvām you, prasādayē be pleased, pauruṣam manliness, śraya you may take resort to, śōkasya sorrow's, antaram a chance, dātum to give in, nārhasi you ought not.

'I implore you with folded palms on account of our friendship to show manliness. You should not give in to grief.
yē śōkamanuvartantē na tēṣāṅ vidyatē sukham.

tējaśca kṣīyatē tēṣāṅ na tvaṅ śōcitumarhasi4.7.12৷৷


yē those, śōkam grief, anuvartantē whoever give way, tēṣām for them, sukham pleasure, na vidyatē is not there, tēṣām for them, tējaśca brilliance, kṣīyatē is reduced, tvam you, śōcitum to grieve, nārhasi ought not

'There is no happiness for those who give way to sorrow. Their brilliance is dimmed. Therefore, you ought not grieve.
śōkēnābhiprapannasya jīvitē cāpi saṅśayaḥ.

sa śōkaṅ tyaja rājēndra! dhairyamāśraya kēvalam4.7.13৷৷


śōkēna by grief, abhiprapannasya who is overpowered, jīvitē cāpi even in life, saṅśayaḥ doubt, rājēndra O king, saḥ he, śōkam sorrow, tyaja give up, kēvalam only, dhairyam patience, āśraya seek shelter

'Even the chances of survival are doubtful for a man who is overpowered by sorrow. Give up sorrow and have patience, O king!
hitaṅ vayasyabhāvēna brūmi nōpadiśāmi tē.

vayasyatāṅ pūjayanmē na tvaṅ śōcitumarhasi4.7.14৷৷


vayasyatāṅ friendly concern, pūjayanmē offering you, hitam brūmi I am speaking, tē to you, nōpadiśāmi I do not advise, mē my, vayasyatām friendship, pūjayan honouring, tvam you, śōcitum to grieve, na arhasi you ought not to

'Out of friendly concern I offer my opinion in your interest. I am not competent to advise you. Respecting my friendship, you should never yield to grief.'
madhuraṅ sāntvita stēna sugrīvēṇa sa rāghavaḥ.

mukhamaśrupariklinnaṅ vastrāntēna pramārjayat4.7.15৷৷


tēna sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, madhuram sweet, sāntvitaḥ comforted, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, aśrupariklinnam wet with tears, mukham face, vastrāntēna with the hem of his upper cloth, pramārjayat wiped

Consoled by the sweet words of Sugriva, Rama wiped his face filled with tears by the hem of his upper cloth.
prakṛtisthastu kākutsthassugrīvavacanātprabhuḥ.

sampariṣvajya sugrīvamidaṅ vacanamabravīt4.7.16৷৷


prabhuḥ Lord , kākutsthaḥ Kakutstha, sugrīvavacanāt by the words of Sugriva, prakṛtisthaḥ he became
composed, sugrīvam Sugriva, sampariṣvajya after embracing, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt he spoke

When lord Rama, the scion of the Kakutstha race was comforted by these words of Sugriva, he came to his senses, and clasping him said:
kartavyaṅ yadvayasyēna snigdhēna ca hitēna ca.

anurūpaṅ ca yuktaṅ ca kṛtaṅ sugrīva! tattvayā4.7.17৷৷


sugrīva! O Sugriva!, snigdhēna by a loving, hitēna ca and by a well-wisher, vayasyēna by a friend, yat whatever, kartavyaṅ duty, anurūpaṅ suitable, yuktam proper, tat that, tvayā by you, kṛtam done

'O Sugriva! you have done what a friend should have done in a befitting manner with your sweet words and good wishes.
ēṣa ca prakṛtisthō.hamanunītastvayā sakhē!.

durlabhō hīdṛśō bandhurasminkālē viśēṣataḥ4.7.18৷৷


sakhē O friend, tvayā by you, anunītaḥ counselled by you, ēṣaḥ aham that way I am, prakṛtisthaḥ come back to the senses, īdṛśaḥ such, bandhuḥ friend, durlabhaḥ hi is difficult to find, asmin kālē this time, viśēṣataḥ specially

'O friend! you have guided me back to my senses thus. It is difficult to find a friend like you specially at this time.
kiṅ tu yatnastvayā kāryō maithilyāḥ parimārgaṇē.

rākṣasasya ca raudrasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ4.7.19৷৷


kiṅ tu but, tvayā by you, maithilyāḥ Maithili's, durātmanaḥ of the evil-minded, rākṣasasya demon's, raudrasya of the fierce, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, parimārgaṇē in tracing, yatnaḥ effort, kāryaḥ do

'Indeed, you must make effort to trace the princess from Mithila and the evil-minded,
fierce demon Ravana.
mayā ca yadanuṣṭhēyaṅ visrabdhēna taducyatām.

varṣāsviva ca sukṣētrē sarvaṅ sampadyatē tava4.7.20৷৷


mayā by me, yat that, anuṣṭhēyam to be done, tat that, visrabdhēna without any hesitation, ucyatām it may be, tava your, sarvam everything, varṣāsu in the rainy season, sukṣētrē iva in a fertile land, sampadyatē it will produce good results.

'Now tell me about my duty without any hesitation. I assure you that your desire will be fulfilled, just as seeds sown in a fertile land with timely rains bear fruit.
mayā ca yadidaṅ vākyamabhimānātsamīritam.

tattvayā hariśārdūla! tattvamityupadhāryatām4.7.21৷৷


hariśārdūla! O tiger among monkeys!, mayā by me too, abhimānāt out of injured honour, yat those words, idam these, vākyam words, samīritum have been uttered, tat that, tvayā by you, tattvam iti appropriately, upadhāryatām it may be treated so

'O tiger amongst monkeys! accept my words uttered out of injured honour in their true sense.
anṛtaṅ nōktapūrvaṅ mē na ca vakṣyē kadācana.

ētattē pratijānāmi satyēnaiva ca tē śapāmyahamaṅ৷৷4.7.22৷৷


mē by me, anṛtam lies, na uktapūrvam never said earlier, kadācana at any time, na vakṣyē ca I will not tell also, ētat this, tē to you, pratijānāmi I promise, aham I am, satyēnaiva by truth alone, ca and, tē śapāmi I swear

'I have never uttered a false word earlier nor will I do it in future. This is my promise. I swear by truth alone.'
tataḥ prahṛṣṭassugrīvō vānaraissacivaissaha.

rāghavasya vacaśśrutvā pratijñātaṅ viśēṣataḥ4.7.23৷৷


tataḥ then, sacivaiḥ with his counsellers, vānaraiḥ saha with monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāghavasya Raghava's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, viśēṣataḥ specially, pratijñātam his own promise, prahṛṣṭaḥ felt glad

Sugriva and his counsellors felt glad on hearing Rama's words, particularly the assurance given by him.
ēvamēkāntasampṛktau tatastau naravānarau.

ubhāvanyōnyasadṛśaṅ sukhaṅ duḥkhamabhāṣatām4.7.24৷৷


tataḥ then, ēvam that way, ēkāntasampṛktau meeting in private, tau both, naravānarau a man and a monkey (Rama and Sugriva), ubhau both, anyōnyasadṛśam in a mutually befitting manner, sukhaduḥkham joy and sorrow, abhāṣatām spoke to each other

Man and monkey then met privately and shared the weal and woe of one another.
mahānubhāvasya vacō niśamya

harirnṛpāṇāmṛṣabhasya tasya.

kṛtaṅ sa mēnē harivīramukhya

stadā svakāryaṅ hṛdayēna vidvān4.7.25৷৷


vidvān wise man, saḥ he, harivīramukhyaḥ chief of monkeys, hariḥ monkey, mahānubhāvasya of the magnanimous, tasya his, nṛpāṇām of kings, ruṣabhasya of the bull among men, vacaḥ words, niśamya after listening, tadā then, kāryam task, kṛtam achieved, hṛdayēna at heart, mēnē he thought

Wise Sugriva, chief of monkeys, heard the words of the magnanimous Rama, a bull
among men. He felt glad at heart thinking that his task has been achieved.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē saptamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the seventh sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by the sage Valmiki.
